"WSWs? BBWs? Whats that got to do with local media? And secondly, but perhaps more important... gloryholes...? Donnie" I totally agree, Donnie. And your post has to do with local media in what way? - ZombieOriginal (12/28/10)

WSWs? BBWs? Whats that got to do with local media? And secondly, but perhaps more important, what's it matter either way? Sounds like the kind of guy who hits the gloryholes anyway. Wait...did they ever find a suspect in the arson of The Block? Donnie (12/28/10)

Dear WMAL Management, As an avid WMAL listener. I am keenly aware there is THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS going on, and I have enjoyed following THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS on WMAL over the past 10 years. Hannity, Chris, Rush, Mark, and Fred have all reported that there is A WAR ON CHRISTMAS, and Tom Marr subbing for Marky said last week “around here we say Merry Christmas.” Tammy Bruce was subbing for Hannity and had a long diatribe about how we need to fight to keep Christmas from being completely erased. Hannity said to annoy those who avoid saying “Merry Christmas,” by saying to them “Merry Christmas” twice. So, as a great American, I boycott all the stores that don’t say “Merry Christmas” in their adds (I am looking at you, Lord & Taylor) and I write nasty emails to city administrators that block Santa Claus from parades. Thank you Sean for reporting on this growing problem. As a Christian, I don’t like people trying to dismiss Christmas during Christmastime, and I turn to WMAL to keep me informed on THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS. This afternoon, I am cleaning out my inbox and I came across an email from WMAL sent last Wednesday. As a Great American, I opened it. The subject line is “Seasons Greetings from WMAL,” and the body of the email reads “wishing you and yours a happy holiday season.” There is NO MENTION OF CHRISTMAS in an email I received from WMAL! Has the WAR ON CHRISTMAS people hijacked WMAL”S email list of great Americans and used it to spread hate towards Christians around the DC area? Did someone at WMAL not get the message that there is A WAR ON CHRISTMAS? What is next; WMAL sending out an email praising Sharia Law, or WMAL sending out an email telling us all the good things Obama has done? (12/28/10)

Dave, did you see Tom Shales' discussion on the P05t site today? He's positively suicidal. "And I'm late again - because of computer crap and also the staggering ineptitude of AOL." AOL? Time for Tom to go live on a fahm. "Craig Ferguson makes me sick. ... Ever see Ferguson's imitation of Larry King? He does King as a babbling, drooling, senile imbecile." And your point is? "It would have been SO easy to populate Mayberry [with some black people in the first half of the 1960s]." Of course, Tom, it would have been SO easy. We'll just get in the Delorean and go back and get that done. SO easy. "Decided to take a trip into the city about 3AM stayed, till about 430AM made my way through the normal loops and saw four SW's total, two of them mimes. All new faces to me but not fit for my collection. 2 BSW (the mimes) that were a little thick for my taste, and 2 WSW one really old and BBW and the other old and thin but looked like she had been rode hard and put away wet too many times. Oh well, worth a try. I really miss the days of 25-30 at a time to choose from." No, wait, Tom Shales didn't write that last one. Even though the ratings aren't important this time of year, the substitute hosts on WMAL are much more listenable for those who don't like the regular hosts, so maybe some of those will get suckered in. I'm listening to the Hannity show for the first time in a couple years because Hannity's not on it. "Let freedom ring, let the white girl sing." - Zombie-WarmingTrend (12/28/10)

The amount of OOBBEE posts today are very reminiscent of Paul Bicknell and his constant spamming of the mailbag. As Dave would say..."Hmmmmmmm". (12/28/10)

I know some people know about 880 and 1010 in NYC. I pointed it out because I believe their ratings and revenue is separated, thus, the comparison to TOP is not fair. TOP has no real competition in this market. OOBBEE (12/28/10)

Dave--check this out. A listener alerted us to it. Nice to (WTMD) in the Post! www.washingtonpost.com (12/28/10)

I always thought it was Sunny & Sheer, what in the hell do I know, huh? (12/28/10)

[RE:WCBS (880) has a sister station in NYC; 1010 WINS. They used to have separate websites. Now, with FAN, there is one site. OOBBEE] And this is news???? (12/28/10)

I am listening to the “Donovan McNabb Show” on the Sports Chix right now. Why hasn’t JFK started up the “Rex Grossman Show” to compete? LOL OOBBEE (12/28/10)

God does Mark Belling SUCK as a fill in for Rush...second only to Mark Steyn. At least have Mark Davis fill in. (12/28/10)

OK, so over the years I’ve managed to whittle down my favorites list on Dishnet to maybe 25 or 30 channels. I can pull up the guide and only have to quickly scroll through my “go to” list, and the odds are really good that I’m not missing anything I’d want to view, because there’s never anything on the other channels that I’ve ever watched. One of my guilty pleasures on occasion is the medical technology based shows on Discovery Health (DHLTH). So, with all the dreck and drivel on the other hundreds of channels, what has possessed them to turn DHLTH into the House-Frau Clown channel? I will admit that I’m someone that has believed for a long time that any Oprah is too much Oprah, so I do have a predisposed bias, but as the boys say on Monday night, come on, man! OWN. Oh, What a Nightmare. And, my apologies for being late to the party, but I was amused by the posts a few days ago addressing Howard’s new contract. You suits have been predicting Stern’s demise for as long as he’s been on the air—which is now pushing 30 years. Really? “Irrelevant”, “shtick is getting old”? He has never been more relevant, enjoys very public support by current TV and movie entertainers, and his recent interviews with the likes of Billy Joel, Sly, Ozzie, Robert Duvall, David Arquette, and Denise Richards (just to name a few that pop into my head) have been brilliant. The show has always been and continues to be the best 4-5 hours of radio every day that it’s on, and the millions of folks that have moved to pay for programming (at a premium over the regular subscription, mind you) are evidence of that. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and it’s certainly your prerogative to decline to listen, but you’re missing great stretches of riveting and often hilarious conversation, punctuated by brief but oogie and uncomfortable episodes of nekid chicks and the Sybian. Beats listening to oldies and traffic and weather together on the eights. John (12/28/10)

RE: "Dave" McElway, it was supposed to be "Doug" McElway (12/28/10)

(PULLQUOTE) Wind she(a)r: A moron's favorite tool! Whenever you can't find something legitamate to comment on you always fall back on someone's spelling. That said whether it's "windshear" or "windsheer" you knew exactly what I was talking about! (END PULL) Hang on there, Saint Fridolin... First off, I'm not the same guy you've been tweaking in recent posts; just a participant in the mailbag who knows that, if you were in the same room with these people, you wouldn't be as brazen in your rants; you would have your ass handed to you, finely ground up in a Folger's can. Second, damned right I'm going after spelling; in any form of communication, first impressions set the tone for future encounters. When you come out of the chute either with incorrect terminology or blatant misspelling, you are pegged as an ignoramus, like it or not (look at the practitioners of "Leet," for example). Sure I knew what you mean -- I also know what they mean on Channel 4 when a blatant typo ends up in a graphic in a newscast, but it screams "idiot" when it happens. And confusing a nerd toy with a scientific phenomenon puts you ten links lower on the brain-chain than the meteorologists you are chewing out. (12/28/10)

Reality check: WTOP is THE most successful all-news radio station in the United States as measured by both ratings and revenue. Why on earth are you people trying to "fix" it? Good grief... how about some better music or talks stations? (12/28/10)

Dave, regarding Fred Grandy; what you should have said is “According to those in the know, soon, Fred will no longer be with us” . (12/28/10)

Who's Dave McElway? (12/28/10)

RE: Wind she(a)r: A moron's favorite tool! Whenever you can't find something legitamate to comment on you always fall back on someone's spelling. That said whether it's "windshear" or "windsheer" you knew exactly what I was talking about! Like I said before you can't just sit in your "arm chair media boss" chair and THINK you know all about weather forecasting. I still haven't seen any forecast made by you (the so called expert) at all. Like I said before big mouths have small brains. (12/28/10)

"The counties are Montgomery, Fairfax, Prince George's, Charles, Anne Arundel, Howard. The Winter Weather Advisory was for Prince George's and Anne Arundel in Maryland." What up, yo? No love for Loudoun County? - Zombie-BreathAlyzer (12/28/10)

More proof David Zurawik, like many Baltimore Sun writers, just phones it in from their bathtubs. If Zurawik had bothered to contact Discovery Communications or investigated the material for his story well, he'd have discovered very simply that OPRAH is contractually obligated to her affiliates nationwide until next September. She cannot contractually do a daily talk show on OWN until at least then, not to mention she doesn't want to piss off her affiliates because her production company is peddling replacement shows that will probably take the place of OPRAH in many markets. But, once again, Zurawik shows what A COMPLETE IDIOT he is. Even a blind squirrel could have found that nut! It was on Baltimore Media Blog and now it's here on DCRTV. The Sun & Zurawik are so f'ing clueless it's not funny! (12/28/10)

"I would gladly change to a news station that didn't have 20 part investigative pieces, each part lasting 15 seconds, repeated ad nauseum." Please try WBAL 1090 kHZ AM, John, in the mornings. Their weather person is their Lisa Baden, but the rest of the program is solid. (12/27/10)

Hey dumb stupid Citadel: Grandy leaves, bring back ANDY PARKS! Of course, Andy may not want to go back to a once-great place. Oh well, listeners' loss. (12/27/10)

Re: WTOP I am happy for their ratings and revenue, but my point is they could do it with a more refined strategy and concept. And without significant competition on the commercial radio dial, it would probably turn out fine. I think WTOP needs to think less like a cheesy car dealership and more like Apple or Starbucks with regard to product and marketing psychology.....But WTOP is not alone, Panera Bread is pushing a Panera "rewards" Card that is actually a transparent attempt to up sell customers to a higher average check total. Now one might ask why Panera is intent on manipulating their "P1" customers like this, considering the loss of brand loyalty from these customers who realize it is a con. Instead of annoying their best customers, Panera should find a way to bring new customers into the store, or to further enhance P1 belief that Panera food is top quality (for that segment of the market). (12/27/10)

Will Mrs. Fred campaign in Iowa with her expertise in Sharia law in the US? What has JD Heyworth told Fred about going from conservative talk show host back into politics? Will Fred bring in Christine O'Donnell to help his campaign? Will Chris Plante be his strategy manager? Will Fred ask Joe Miller for help? Sharia Law, War on Christmas, Illegal aliens, bloated Federal workforce, government option (as opposed to "public option"),. These are all questions that need to ba asked. (12/27/10)

FOX5 just showed Dave McElway giving a report from Ocean City and I was wondering just how long before he gets pissed about something or somebody and gets the boot from or leaves FOX news. (12/27/10)

Talk about two know-nothings. Lavar Arrington was describing his trip to Iraq (sponsored by Tostitos) where he entertained the troops. So he tells Bill Rowland (paraphrasing) "it was weird that everyone was from Alabama and in another place almost everyone was from Wisconsin". Bill - "yeah they enlist and are sent to one base for training so they all come from the same base. . Hello Lavar? Did no one tell you that you were amongst National Guard units that were on active duty and that they tend to be from the same county or state? (12/27/10)

This was in the mailbag: " ' WCBS is much better than any other news station, and if someone could recreate it in DC, WTOP would go the way of all-news WAVA.' Think so, Carl? WCBS would kill for WTOP's ratings or revenue." The two are not related. There is a well known law of radio, "You don't have to be good, just better than anyone else in the market." It is possible that, if a broadcaster programmed a good signal with a DC version of WCBS, they would take a significant portion of the WTOP audience and revenue. I would gladly change to a news station that didn't have 20 part investigative pieces, each part lasting 15 seconds, repeated ad nauseum. John (12/27/10)

At 4pm Monday, hearing Michael Jackson's "Beat It" on 97.1 FM. Guess WASH-FM has stoppered the reindeer tinkle for another year... (12/27/10)

"I think it is shallow approach that is not respectful of the audience, and themselves." Station management is laughing at you, right now. In fact, the sales dept. is probably making a laminated poster board, showing your slogan as an overlay on their ratings and revenue. Well nameless poster I believe you. I also believe that those mentioned are smugly clueless of how people close to them despise them. And I wouldn't be a bit shocked to learn they are the blind recipients of "bad luck" given a little "push" by people who have to deal with thier arrogant asses. Karma works in funny ways and by funny I mean gut splitting, fall out of your chair laughter by those who can get away with it or maybe just a smirk or grin and a look right into the eye of the jackass. Ever see the movie "Waiting"? or better yet "Fight Club". So they can treat us listeners with contempt as they live thier nice lives but they should remember....we make thier food,we fix thier cars,we build thier homes, clean thier clothes, cut thier hair, mow thier lawn....grin....Donnie Durden (12/27/10)

"my wife, daughter and daughter's boyfriend all piled into a car and headed south ... and are now snowed in at a cheap drafty hotel somewhere between Williamsburg and Norfolk." Hmmm, nah, too easy. "you so called [so called by whom, Sir? You?] armchair media bosses think you could do a better job of forecasting the weather." Sir, have you been reading? Not a better job of forecasting, a better job of NOT forecasting. "PROVE IT! You beer guzzling losers" I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. "wouldn't know a wind sheer [sic] from a simple thunderstorm. Now you want to put your money where your big mouth is???" What money? We're beer guzzling losers, remember? "With all of your knowledge why don't you predict how this east coast storm is gonna play out!" The snow will melt. You can take that to the bank. "I want to know when it's gonna end and which town is gonna get the brunt of it." So do the weatherman. "Better yet tell me when a warming trend is gonna hit the area." That one's easy. January. It happens every year. "In all reality [Whoa there, don't step out of your wheelhouse, hoss!] I"m [sic] not gonna hold my breath. Big mouths have little brains!" You said it, sister! - Zombie-O-Meter (12/27/10)

An "urgent" memo from NPR today: "One of the three flagpoles attached to the front of the building has broken loose in the wind. It is currently swinging widely into the south side of the building and has cracked through the first pane of glass on the third floor. Building services has been alerted, but this is obviously an extremely dangerous situation. The staff on the south side of the building on the 3rd and 4th floors have been moved to safer areas. The front entrance to the building has been closed because of broken glass. I'll keep you posted on further developments. In the meantime, enter through the garage and please use extreme caution moving in and out of the building." (12/27/10)

[Source: Grandy To Leave MAL By May - 12/27 - Earlier this month, DCRTV told you that Fred Grandy (right), morning man at Citadel news talker WMAL (630 AM), is "at odds with management over creative concepts and style."] What differences could he possibly have with station management? Does he want the show to go in the direction of the fool who comes after him, Chris Plante - which means farther to the edge of insanity and paranoia, or is the opposite, in that he wants the show to be more balanced (interesting?) by having different points of views discussed? I doubt there are really differences in "creativity," but rather he is tired of getting up so early in the morning for what I am sure is a modest pay check. (12/27/10)

Re: your story of several days ago: Comcast To Merge CSN & Local NBC TV Sports? There may be something to that. I just saw some banner ads from NBC4 that are heavily promoting the main news team of Vance, Gentzler and Kammerer. Conspicuously missing from the ads? A sports person … any sports person. We get just those three. Things that make ya go hmmmmm …. By the way, the ads were on the NYTimes.com site. Talk about localization … (12/27/10)

Dave's response: I'm pretty sure that you're going to see a full-scale merger of NBC Sports and Comcast SportsNet after the merger of Comcast and NBC goes through early next year. By the end of 2011, we may just see Comcast SportsNet Mid Atantic becoming NBC Sports Washington.....

"I think it is shallow approach that is not respectful of the audience, and themselves." Station management is laughing at you, right now. In fact, the sales dept. is probably making a laminated poster board, showing your slogan as an overlay on their ratings and revenue. (12/27/10)

The accuracy of the snow forecasts isn't the problem. Big deal. The problem is the hype machine, the carny presentations that makes the forecasts sound more definite than they actually are. It's an obvious tactic just to generate ratings or pageviews. My personal complaint is that the carny approach doesn't go far enough. I would like to see Bob Ryan or Doug Kammerer in a set that looks like a cabin that's been snowbound for weeks, talking about subsisting on deer jerky until the spring thaw. (12/27/10)

Re: "'Capital Weather Gang blog, washingtonpost.com... You will find that the impact on DC of today's storm was nearly impossible to predict.' Then that's what they should say; that they don't know." CWG said they didn't know over and over again. Read the blog. (12/27/10)

Speaking of the wind blowing the WPost down the street: this morning was the first day of our new deliverers and I found our half of the street's papers lying in a line in the drainage area on our street all blown off the driveways by the wind. So the previous poster was not exaggerating. And as long as I'm here, I also say WCBS is much better than any other news station, and if someone could recreate it in DC, WTOP would go the way of all-news WAVA -- which itself was better than WTOP back in the old days, just didn't have enough financial backing or a 24-hour AM frequency to keep it going. Anyway, WCBS is better partly because it does NOT have quizzes on the weekend, played back phone-in comments about meaningless things, frequent reports on nothing, and unbelievably short summaries of major events in other parts of the country and the world. Though to give it some slack, the New York area has a heck of a lot more crazy stories, and just saying them without laughing or crying in shock takes a lot of will power. And on WTOP Dave McConnell is the best; I wish he'd get more time in his reports. My final thought is that, this morning -- with just a single substitute anchor who just gave lots of news with a lot of detail and with no "filler" crap -- was the best WTOP has sounded in a long time. -- Carl in Olney (12/27/10)

Hahaha .... Hey Captain Cumulus, it's wind SHEAR. "Wind Sheer" was a character from the Transformers toy line. What was that comment again about big mouths? (12/27/10)

Who is that Paul Raphel guy on channel 5?..I'm seening him more and more doing those human interest, sometimes silly, fluff segments that Holly Morris does...So is she on vacation, has he replaced her or do they now have two people doing those types of stories?..But then again, I can't see them having two people doing that stuff. (12/27/10)

Talk about pitiful.. That's today's Post "section" on the local business 200. Instead of the inviting multi-page insert of past years(with blurbs and discussions of the businesses), we are today blessed with a single page instead. Of course we are nudged to either buy the Capitol Business section or go online for more info. The Post delivered edition is getting so flimsy I expected the wind to blow it down the street today..and I have seen this happen!.Regards Biff (12/27/10)

Dave's response: The loss of Howard Kurtz makes the Post's Style section completely useless to me. What now? Soon, more of Lisa de Moraes's endless shit about the next season of "AI." Talk about torture! I tell you, I getting damn close to pulling the plug on the print edition of the WaPo. 2011 might be the year I join the increasing masses and sever my subscription ties with the sinking rag. Sad.....

does any one know anything about or what happened to Matt Ackland on Fox 5? His bio is gone. His FB stated "worked at". His doing or theirs? or??? (12/27/10)

Dave's response: I saw Matt doing a weather-related report on Fox5 yesterday.....

A big lump of coal to channel 9 for dropping the WASH christmas music from it's weather radar sub channel just one day after christmas. I was just this close to blowing my brains out if I heard that Paul McCartney christmas song one more time. Prey tell with the platoon size weather team they got over at channel 7 is that Bob Ryan I saw filling in on a Sunday night. Or did he come by the station to pick up his golden snow shovel and thought what the hell while I'm here. And Pamela Brown was pulling the old Mary Tyler Moore thing by working christmas night on channel 7 wearing eye glasses to boot. Wonder if Lou Grant and Murray stopped by to wish her a Ho! Ho! Ho! And oh by gosh by golly Craig "I really should be a sportscaster" Melvin and Lindsay Czarniak look so cute hosting the NonStop Washington Holiday special on WRC sub channel 4.2. What was that look. Another lump of coal to WETA tv for showing a tired old public domain movie like Topkapi on christmas night instead of some holiday themed fair like say Scrooge or Scrooged or something chrismussie. WETA tv program scheduling is truly baffling too me. What a chimp throwing feces at a board and that decides whats on. And dear Fox Sports Radio about Stephen A. Smith ha-ha and you should have moved the bombastic JT The Brick too mornings and let Ben Maller and the lovely Miranda with the pink headphones handle the overnights 5 days a week. I dig the gang from Moonshine Mark, Doc Mike, the legally blind guy Brett etc etc. (12/27/10)

I'm looking for audio of the Angus Burger comercial from McDonalds. Its a guy playing guitar, and one of the lines is something like, "I wish I were an octopus." It used to be played during Ravens' games. YouTube has a poor imitation. Any help would be appreciated. ChrisPaulus@gmail.com... Thanks. (12/27/10)

I was preparing a trip to the Outer Banks for this week until I heard about the storm coming our way. I pulled all my weather info from accuweather.com and wunderground.com after hearing the reports on WTOP and channels 4 and 7, then made my decision not to travel until all was well. Snowfall in the DC area has been minimal, but about 9 inches fell near Norfolk, closing Rt 644 to 64. Ignoring my decision and advice to stay put, my wife, daughter and daughter's boyfriend all piled into a car and headed south -- "We can handle a little snow, you pu**y" -- and are now snowed in at a cheap drafty hotel somewhere between Williamsburg and Norfolk. I'm home where its warm and comfortable. Sure, the snow forecasting on local media is overdramaticized with a lot of "oooh, scary!" going on, but all we have to do is listen with an objective ear, filter the hyperbole, get confirmation from a second source if necessary and get on with our lives. (12/27/10)

The way the weather is spread out over the entire newscast is ridiculous. Breaking it up into sensational little blurbs just before commercials then acting as if they didn't claim it was "coming right up after this" drives me nuts. I gave up trying to get any decent information on the weather by watching the news. Weatherbug does a much better job of informing me and it doesn't lead me on for 27 minutes. And the Weather Channel...now thats a sick joke gone horribly wrong. Donnie (12/27/10)

Sooooooooooooo, you so called armchair media bosses think you could do a better job of forecasting the weather. PROVE IT! You beer guzzling losers wouldn't know a wind sheer from a simple thunderstorm. Now you want to put your money where your big mouth is??? With all of your knowledge why don't you predict how this east coast storm is gonna play out! I want to know when it's gonna end and which town is gonna get the brunt of it. Wow, everyone seems to want to get the last word on snow predictions. Probably indicative of deep-seated psychological issues, if a recent analysis can be believed. "Capital Weather Gang blog, washingtonpost.com... You will find that the impact on DC of today's storm was nearly impossible to predict." Then that's what they should say; that they don't know. "It is easy to be anonymous and make fun of others." A point I've made many times. "Some of these are probably the same ones who poke fun at KHZtv, Don and Mike, and others on this forum." I guess we'll never know, but I remember D&M delivering the annual mocking of Bob Ryan as "a conjurer" and backing it up with tape. Not to mention the Bread-O-Meter. Not to mention "Wilma" Thomas. Not to mention the one guy I saw who got it right (1 to 3 inches) and wanted everyone off the roads before the snow even started falling. - Zombie Wilma (12/27/10)

Will someone please help the weekend meteorologist on channel 9 learn the names of the counties here? Stop saying dc metro or dc area. The counties are Montgomery, Fairfax, Prince George's, Charles, Anne Arundel, Howard. The Winter Weather Advisory was for Prince George's and Anne Arundel in Maryland. (12/27/10)

Looks like channel 4 gave a number of regular on-air staff off for the holidays since Lyndsay Czarniak was doing the morning news last week and this morning, John Schiffren was doing the "Sports in a Minute" segment..I would've thought that at least one of the sports people would be doing holiday duty. But guess not..But then again, considering Schiffren was just reading the teleprompter, they really could've had anyone doing that segment this morning. (12/26/10)

"ATTENTION you so called critics of TV/radio weathercasters: Do you arm chair media bosses think you could do better? Huh?".... Yes I could. Weather reports are the biggest time waster/filler in a news broadcast. I could come on and do the weather in 30 seconds. I'd come on, say "Folks we're going to get some snow, but to be honest with you we don't know how much. It's also going to depend where you are. Arlington will have different amounts than Frederick. When we know more, we'll pass it on to you." When I watch the weather I want it simple: how cold/hot will it be, do I need umbrella/boots. and if you don't know, be an adult and just admit "I don't know". I don't need to see video of floods in Alabama or fancy graphics of what the jet stream is doing. Just give me basic info and kick it to the sports guy to tell me how bad the Skins are sucking (12/26/10)

“Paul”, writes: “Is everyone at NBC4 drunk today? The picture has been shifting sizes all day long?” Paul, what you’re seeing is the absence of network quality control of spots submitted for air during an on-going economic depression. (It’s still a Depression in terms of time sold and time actually paid for…) No doubt, you’re watching a program which is primarily in 16:9 while the spots or even some segments of the program itself are in 4:3. Unless you’re watching the news (There are remotes still being shot at 4:3…) it’s the network being too cheap to just say “no” to spots shot at 4:3 when everything else is 16:9. So, for once “Comcast 48” (as I call ‘em because Comcast is already calling the shots and the RF signal is at channel 48.) is not at fault. –Unsigned Corporate Suit (12/26/10)

Re: WTOP- I knew my WCBS comparison would result in a billing and ratings response. Consider this- give WTOP a WINS, then remove DC market government political action spot revenue and see what happens to WTOP ratings and revenue. My point is WTOP takes the low road, when it may not be necessary. I don't think a radio station has to "manufacture" an event to make an emotional bond with the audience. Give the world time, the event will come and the station can rise to the occasion. WTOP's strategy may be effective in the present market situation, but I think it is shallow approach that is not respectful of the audience, and themselves. (12/26/10)

TTENTION you so called critics of TV/radio weathercasters: Do you arm chair media bosses think you could do better? Huh? You want to impress us all with your prediction ablilities? Why not show us how it's done by buying a Powerball ticket so we can see if your "predictions" have paid off. Untill than, shut the hell up and let those people do their jobs in peace! (12/26/10) I so agree with this post. The people who think they can do better than the weathercasters are clueless. It is easy to be anonymous and make fun of others. Some of these are probably the same ones who poke fun at KHZtv, Don and Mike, and others on this forum. My point is that predictions are bullshit. News media needs to settle the hell down. Just report facts and stop making a big fucking deal about what *could* happen. Weather forecasters are just clown entertainers 95% of the time who fill space. Re: Do you arm chair media bosses think you could do better? Huh? You want to impress us all with your prediction ablilities? (12/26/10)

"the ... anchorwoman quipped, 'If you don't have to go anywhere today, don't.' In context, we all get it; but stopping and thinking about that line in a *literal* sense, she's actually saying, "Go out." American English is so much fun..." While your interpretation puzzles me, in the spirit of fellowship I will announce preemptively that you are 100% RIGHT! While we're complaining about snow coverage, how about the local reporter who urged everyone to stay off the street because we were going to get 1 to 3 inches of snow (his words), and normal folk driving before the snow started to fall would interfere with the salt and sand trucks. - ZombieWoof (12/26/10)

Ummm...Just curious why WTOP should emulate WCBS in New York? WTOP garners better than twice the share of audience (WCBS around 4.2, WTOP around 10) and outbills WCBS even though New York is America's number one market! If it ain't broken.... etc.... (12/26/10)

Is everyone at NBC4 drunk today? The picture has been shifting sizes all day long? Paul (12/26/10)

Those who want to whine about this snow "event" should first read the past several days of the Capital Weather Gang blog, washingtonpost.com... You will find that the impact on DC of today's storm was nearly impossible to predict. (12/26/10)

Dave's response: Yeah, but the Washington Post's Crapital Weather Gang was hyping a "white Christmas" in the DC metro more than a week ago. If you live by the "media hype sword," there there's no sympathies from me when when they die by it, too. WaPo.com got the extra pageviews. Fuck it if the CWG was wrong.....

ATTENTION you so called critics of TV/radio weathercasters: Do you arm chair media bosses think you could do better? Huh? You want to impress us all with your prediction ablilities? Why not show us how it's done by buying a Powerball ticket so we can see if your "predictions" have paid off. Untill than, shut the hell up and let those people do their jobs in peace! (12/26/10)

AMEN to the rant about weather guys. Bob Ryan is the worst. Couple of years ago he predicted rain, snow showers,1-5inches,and 5-10inches.He covered every scenario then bragged he was the only D.C. weatherman that got it right. (12/26/10)

Last night as I was flipping channels to see what they forecasted for this winter storm that is just brushing us, I noticed Channel 9 is the only DC station whose chief meteorologist came it to work on Christmas Day. Doug Hill/Bob Ryan, Sue Palka & Doug Crammer did not come (or least not on the air). However, I hear Doug Hill may have come in this morning. It wouldn't surprise me if Channel 9 airs a commercial bragging about this. (12/26/10)

New liner- WTOP Radio... Be afraid... be very afraid For a reality check, try hearing WCBS. They get the job done in NYC with much less drama, bias and manipulation. (12/26/10)

Ok...Here we go for my annual rant. To save money, why don't news stations just get rid of weather people?? Gwen Tolbart, at 8:50am, still has no clue how much snow we could get in the DC Metro area. Fine. Weather forecasters suck when it comes to forecasting weather. Their accuracy is awful. Just have a regular ole reporter report WHEN snow happens and drop this stupid game of predicting...All these weather people play a stupid game anyway...They make a big generalization before the snow event ("We COULD see a big snow event in Washington, DC") then if it happens they start claiming bragging rights ("I predicted 10 inches when I said 4 - 12 inches in the DC area") Then, of course, the news stations run their stupid promos bragging how they got the "Christmas Storm of 2010" right. Yes...People who exclusively do weather on TV are useless hacks. Oh, and let's not forget how the news goes into hyper mode and has to wrap the snowstorm, snowflake falling graphics around everything we watch on that station (Fox is way guilty in this.) (12/26/10)

Dave's response: I just love it when a TV or radio person says something like - "We could get 1 to 5-plus inches." Huh? Translation - "I just don't know." At least that would be more honest. Man, I do get tired of all the media snow hype. And it's not even January or February yet. Just shut the fuck up. If it snows it snows, if it doesn't it doesn't. Sheeeeesh.....

Interesting turn of a phrase on the Sunday "Today" show: coming out of a weather break, the Sunday anchorwoman quipped, "If you don't have to go anywhere today, don't." In context, we all get it; but stopping and thinking about that line in a *literal* sense, she's actually saying, "Go out." American English is so much fun... (12/26/10)

"Reason I ask recently a good friend of mine recently had an interview with a station in Indianapolis only to be turned down even though he had 30 years of experience for the job ONLY because he did not smoke cigarettes since as the PD had said in the rejection letter to him had said '..the cigarette to a radio announcer is just an important as the mic is...we need someone who does smoke cigarettes and since you don't smoke we can't hire you...' " And they wonder why I keep coming back. What's the station's call? What's the PD's name? What's the rationale for putting a "why" in a rejection letter? Is it April 1 already? - ZW (12/26/10)

Any update to DirecTV pulling the plug on WBAL 11? Jeff n E'burg (12/25/10)

How many of those who currently is in radio and TV in DC/Baltimore smoke cigarettes? Reason I ask recently a good friend of mine recently had an interview with a station in Indianapolis only to be turned down even though he had 30 years of experience for the job ONLY because he did not smoke cigarettes since as the PD had said in the rejection letter to him had said "..the cigarette to a radio announcer is just an important as the mic is...we need someone who does smoke cigarettes and since you don't smoke we can't hire you..." I kinda wonder if that program director does have a point since in the past I have seen many of old photos of former radio announcers including the late great George Michael and ALL of them seemed to have that handy pack of smokes within sight such as that pack of L&M in the case of George Michael at Philly's WFIL for example. Stereotype perhaps? (12/25/10)

Listening to the weather on our "storm watch" station WTOP is a real trip. The WJLA meteorologist says 1-3 inches of snow tomorrow. 2 minutes later the anchor is saying 5 inches or more. Does the anchor not listen to the WJLA forecast? Another example..The WJLA guy will say temps in the 20's tonight. After his forecast, the news anchor will "summarize" by saying it will be near 30 tonight. This goes on all the time on WTOP. Why does the anchor need to summarize the weather when we just heard it from WJLA and we're going to hear it again in 8 minutes? Of course now I'm waiting for the obligatory story about what supplies to keep in your trunk, etc. This is bullshit, but because it's Xmas I won't say it. Regards Biff (12/25/10)

For those in the Best/Worst section of DCRTV who complain about The Big Tigger Morning Show on WPGC do you realize that morning drive talent especially LOCAL BIG name talent is HARD to find in today`s radio world. That is why you have sooooooooooooooooooooo much syndication regardless of format. Big Tigger is fine in morning drive the play list has to be the key. Donnie Simpson is gone he probably should be at an Urban Adult station anyway not a hip-hoper he`s around 55 years old. WPGC has started to return to its Urban/CHR format a good move let`s see where it goes. Most of today`s commercial radio is cookie cutter that`s the nature of the beast most of the radio station`s in the US are owned by 3 BIG companies. Again the 1996 Tel Comm act help kill good commercial local radio the days of companies owning between 12 to 20 station`s are long gone. WPGC still made money in 2009 we will see what the 2010 numbers look like but PGC going all pop would be something that iam not looking forward to. (12/25/10)

WBAL Plus 11-2 and Comcast 208 has been running the Yule Log until 3:00 PM today. Merry Christmas, Dave. Ron in Annapolis. (12/25/10)

Merry Christmas Jessica! I Love You!! (12/25/10)

So will the new WTOP traffic reporters now doing "Santa Updates" actually be telling us the truth about the traffic or will they be lying to us about THAT, too? Will they be doing Easter Bunny updates in the spring? (12/25/10)

I clicked onto the WHFC-FM stream, expecting to find those classic old time radio Christmas shows that aired last year. Instead, I found just typical Christmas music (which you can find just about anywhere online or on the radio). This translates to a big "Bah Humbug!". What a disappointment! Does anyone know who else might be offering the old time radio Christmas broadcasts online? (12/25/10)

6 AM Christmas Day...and I cant find a "Burning Yule Log" on any of the DC broadcast channels. Shame. Happy Holidays to All. Chip, Crofton, MD. (12/25/10)

Dave's response: Channel 50 is running its usual yule log in the evening this year, from 5 PM to 7 PM. Cable channel GMC is running a yule log during Christmas morning, but that's all I could find.....

Thanks to the person who wrote that there was mail delivery today in spite of what the Washington Post said. I was also someone who believed the Post, and didn't bother to check my mail. I just did, and sure enough, it had been delivered. What is the Post's problem these days? Also, I agree that the self-promoting, contrived ads for Channel 4 and Channel 5 are equally bad. Merry Christmas everybody! -- Bobbie (12/24/10)

There's some guy on channel 5 in the morning named Paul Raphel who's been doing movie reviews and lately some of those same fluff segments that Holly Morris does (wonder if he's going to replace her). And after seeing this guy, I must say that FOX5 has to be in the lead in being "gay friendly" in their hiring practices. Not that there's anything wrong with it..They have Robbie Chavez and others that I think may also be gay, but haven't admitted it. (12/24/10)

Have some fun Dave...Poll...Junks vs. K&R...I pick K&R...not because the Junkies are bad...but I want fresh blood and change... (12/24/10)

Friday's print Washington Post had a schedule of "Christmas Eve closings" on page B6. And it stated that there would be: "No mail delivery except Express Mail." Well, later Friday afternoon I was hanging out with friends at my neighborhood Starbucks and someone said they'd hoped they'd get a Christmas surprise in today's mail. When I told her that this morning's Post said there'd be no mail delivery today, everybody around the table laughed. And they laughed at me for believing what I read in the Post. Yes, indeed, the Post, was indeed wrong about something on Friday - yet again. There was mail delivery on Christmas Eve. The Post has become a laughing stock among many DC area residents. That indicates to me that this once great newspaper, which is losing subscribers quarter after quarter, is in some mighty serious credibility trouble as 2011 approaches. And that's the worst kind of trouble a newspaper can have. (12/24/10)

Re: the comment about the recent self praising of the anchors on those t.v. ads, they are no worse than channel 5's ad with Shawn Yancey, Lara Evans and Brian Bolter going on and on about how they relate to their audiences, how they have the best reporters in town, how awesome they all are, YADA YADA. I just saw one of those channel 5 ads with Lara and Shawn and I had to just shake my head and was wondering how they can even read that crap off the teleprompter and expect someone to actually believe them.. Re:Bargain City in Hybla Valley. That store existed into the late 60s when it became the Atlantic Thrift Center. That store lasted until the 80s I think. It’s location is now occupied by the Home Depot in the Mt. Vernon Plaza shopping center at Richmond Highway and Fordson Rd. The original McDonalds location also still exists and its still a McDonalds today! Tom in DC (12/24/10)

"Dave's response: It just seems to me that the same people who complain the loudest about the trashy quality of posts in this here Mailbag are the same people who post much of the trash. Hmmm....." Then not-Dave: "To have a posting handle and to have each post identified is very important, because it's all about 'Look At Me!' & 'See How Clever I Am.' " Not nearly as important as proper spelling and punctuation in my book. Of course having a handle could mean someone's not hiding behind a cloak of anonymity, playing the "keyboard commando" as it were. Merry Christmas to Jim Fairfax, TMU, Sylvie, PLB, Joe from Essex, Rusty Gibson, AHHHHH, Ryan, Unsigned Corporate Suit, Jim, Bobbie, Ryan, Gentle Soul, OOBBEE, LOL, P2, ZombieSpoof (and all variants thereof), HGK, Uncle Frank in Arlington, Haymarket Joe, EJM, Donnie, Greg in Perry Hall, Bob A. in Pikesville, Brad in B'more, "Beef Curtains" and others with handles, except for one. - Zombie Borf (12/24/10)

(regarding a previous post) "If you would prefer, I could write endless posts /// You do. Zombie Woof". That alone would have summed up perfectly, the whole situation with the guy, but the rest of your post went on to nail the dynamic at play here! You stated it all so clearly - now the only mystery is why his nonsense is allowed to continue to stink up the Mailbag. As many others have pointed out before, ZW adds nothing worthwhile to this forum, but instead he distracts and detracts. By the way, months ago I suggested that ZW was ThePenis, but he denied it. I'm glad to see that someone else also noticed the similarity. (12/24/10)

I agree with the earlier post about Channel 4's morning news team sitting around a table discussing how wonderful they are...it's totallly false and contrived. So is the commercial with the Channel 4 evening news team...Jim, Doreen, and Doug. They talk about what a difference they make in people's lives...seriously! These are the worst "promotion" commercials I think I've ever seen. I watch both the morning and evening news on Channel 4, and most of the anchors/reporters do a good job, but those people don't need to tell anyone how special they are. I think they need a new ad agency. -- Bobbie (12/24/10)

"'...If you would prefer' ...vitriol... erstwhile... those less fortunate, like Zombie Woof" Wow, that was looong. Must feel good to get that off your chest. Of course you don't need me to tell you that "erstwhile" means former, so makes no sense in this context. You have a blessed Christmas, and kiss your good lady for me. - ZombieWoof (12/24/10)

That posting about the Korvettes store prompts me to ask this question. Back in 1960 there was a discount store known as "Bargain City" that was located halfway between DC and Fort Belvoir. I believe it was on Highway one. From what I remembered the way the store was laid out I consider it the forerunner to the now Wal-mart Supercenters. My mother used to take us there all the time. The first radio that I ever owned came from that store. Does anyone out there know when that store closed it's doors? We went back to that area in August of '69 and I don't remember seeing it off Highway one. Even the walk up Mickey D's that was just up the road from Mount Vernon was already gone. Does anyone's memory stretch back that far? (12/24/10)

Just saw the commercial on Channel 4 where tom kierien, Jerry Edwards, Ang Yang, and Joe Krebs are sitting eating dinner in restaurant discussing the news. Yeah, right. I'm sure they all go out to lunch after the 11:00 am news and do a post-mortem everyday. I am quickly losing what little respect I have for channel 4. What were they thinking??!! (12/24/10)

"...If you would prefer, I could write endless posts...../// You do. Zombie Woof, aka ThePenisMightier, has been trolling this site for a long time. As we settle in with family and friends for Xmas, we must feel for those less fortunate. Yes, we do get saddled with the odd irascible family member, but think of this poor sod. Surely, he doesn't have a significant other, but probably does have some family somewhere that have to put up with him on some level. We all know an individual who can't let go, has to always get the last word, and has to retort and rebuke every comment which runs contrary to his way of thinking. Such people are as unpleasant in real life as they are on the Internet. While most might scroll the through the Mailbag and decide if they have time to engage in discourse, he can't help himself. To have a posting handle and to have each post identified is very important, because it's all about "Look At Me!" & "See How Clever I Am." At the same time, the sheer volume and vitriol in his posts, says more about this individual than anything else. He is hoping and praying for conflict; agreement or compromise is never part the equation. Each issue he sinks his fangs into gets arbitrated to the nth degree, causing those with better things to do and those who can make an enlightened self-assessment that getting the last word with some angry no-name on the Internet is not all that important, to move on. Thus, in his mind, he has become the winner. But, anyone who knows anything about psychology, knows that this construct is exactly backward. A counselor would have a field day, there is a lot going on that needs examination. /// Finally, it is shame the format of the Mailbag is so archaic, it does force every topic into one big pot, which really makes a cogent discussion pretty hard, unless one want's to scroll back and examine each contribution, at least in part. The format gives power to the erstwhile trolls, who know they have a captive audience. An upgrade to a real message board, would probably add traffic and contributions, to include money. The effort to go back and find the origins of a discussion and it's mutations is a ponderous process, and again, it allows those who are obsessive and have tons of time to monopolize topics. It discourages interesting commentary and contributions from those who don't have the time to scroll back through tons of unrelated postings to get the gist of where a current discussion stands. When I hit the Send button, I know I am not coming back here for a couple of days, and I won't spend a moment of time going back to check my own post, but I will think about and pray for lonely souls and enlightenment those less fortunate, like Zombie Woof (12/24/10)

Today's item about the year-late correction of George Michael's obituary has to be, hands-down, the worst thing the Post has ever done. Even for the WaPo, that's a bad one. (12/24/10)

What, are you kidding? Melser sucks in all positions they've put him in, and I've seen reporter, anchor, weather, so far. He can't ad-lib, he flubs his own script, probably because he can't write. Christmas in Sacramento: 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Sacramento. Not a creature was stirring, not even sad Don Geronimo. The stockings were hung by the chimney with new wife big finger care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there to give back his career; Bart and his gal pal nestled all snug in their guestroom bed, While visions of new fucked up Christmas traditions danced in their heads; And brother Jim in his 'kerchief, and DCRTV's Dave Hughes in his cammies,Had just settled down for a long drunk nap,When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, Mike Sorce sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.Away to the window he flew like a flash,Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen fake SacTown snow. Gave the lustre of mid-day to his rented laser light show, When, what to his wondering eyes should appear, But a East Coast sleigh, with people he burned in the past,With an Irish dj, so lively and quick, Sorce knew in a moment it must be St.Mike O'Mearanick More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,And he whistled, and shouted oh hell no, and called them by name; "Now, Rob! now, Buzz! now, Mason and Ardinger! On, McBride! on Murphy! on Freda! To the top of the porch! to the top of the mistaken stucco Granite Bay wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,With the sleigh full of bad blood, and St. O'Mearanick too. And then, in a twinkling, Geronimo heard from the roof. FUCK YOU ASSHOLE & TO YOU DAVE HUGHES AND DCRTV "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night." AHHHHH (12/24/10)

BREAKING NEWS..A Comcastsportsnet producer was just injured by a flying errant hockey puck in the Pens-Caps game. Hope she's OK. (12/23/10)

To the person wondering about Lowell Melser on WBAL-TV he got his meteorology degree this past year and he is now a certified meteorologist. I think they are using him for the noon newscast simply because of the holiday season with Tom Tasselmyer off, Tony Pann is doing the 5, 6, and 11 PM newscasts, Sandra Shaw doing 11 News Today and John Collins probably doing the weekend weather. I’m not sure if he will be a permanent weathercaster but he certainly added a valuable skill to his resume. He’s still been doing regular news reports on the street for the evening newscasts. I think Lowell will be brought in off the streets when it’s a major weather story and when they want to do Double Team weather or if say during a blizzard they want another weatherman on the street. Once again its proving why WBAL-TV is the newsleader in my mind. Merry Christmas All! - Ryan (12/23/10)

You know, as much as everyone bitches, moans, whines, and puts their opinions forth on the DCRTV mailbag –not to mention often reading on the news page about what’s happening at work before “that e-mail” comes out- the least anybody can do (especially the prolific posters) this Christmas is fork out $39.00 to keep it going, And, you also get to see some cool stuff on DCRTV+ in the process. After all, as any Soldier, Sailor, Airman. Marine, or Coast Guardsman will tell you, “free” is the most expensive word in the English language. Thus, that $39.00 is a helluva bargain to keep DCRTV going. Merry Christmas! –Unsigned Corporate Suit (12/23/10)

The FCC’s lame approval of the Comcast/NBC deal proves that we the people have the best government money can rent, if not buy. Pity is, fewer and fewer and fewer of the people can afford it. Unless the Justice Department disapproves (extremely unlikely) expect to see the NBC and Universal names to gradually disappear (to be replaced with “Comcast”) and locally the WRC sports department will be dissolved and replaced by CSN. This is a sad day for broadcasting… Unsigned Corporate Suit (12/23/10)

Dave's response: The FCC has made countless blunders over the years, including AM stereo, digital "HD Radio," and, most recently, digital TV, which pretty much ended "free" over-the-air TV for many viewers. I just hope that companies like Gannett (which owns WUSA) and Allbritton (which owns WJLA and NC8) and Fox (which owns WTTG and WDCA) like having most of their local distribution being handled by a company (Comcast-NBC) that's directly connected to a major rival TVer (WRC). Let's hope that the bigger and more powerful Comcast "plays nice".....

Something glaring stood out in my mind looking at Jim Williams' NFL TV ratings in different markets. No, not that Baltimore had significantly higher ratings than DC (obviously 1 team is much better than the other so that's a no brainer) nor the fact that the Steelers/Jets were #1 in "The Burgh." That's always expected, what else is there to do up there? LOL No, what surprised me most is that the JETS/STEELERS ratings for New York did NOT MAKE THE LIST AT ALL! Error or were the TV ratings in NYC for that game really that bad? Weird. Also interesting that 4 of the smallest NFL TV markets ended up the TOP 4 in TV ratings in their home markets... Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Baltimore, in that order. Although Jim Williams has the Ravens/Saints game as 12/13/10 instead of 12/19/10, so I'm a little bit suspicious of these numbers because I was there on the 19th! (12/23/10)

Tony K. was interviewing John "Junior" Feinstein in Feinstein's regular time slot today, when Feinstein ALMOST said that he would have called the show on Monday, but he can't . . . and TK immediately interrupted with, "Don't talk about that." I guess we have our confirmation that the show's not live. Sincerely, TMU. (12/23/10)

A couple of things on the Junkies reference in the HBO show. First, they made is seem as if McPhee was responding to the Junks directly when he said that the critics don't know anything since they never played in the NHL. I suspect it was more of a splicing job and McPhee was talking generally about the critics. Second, McPHee was wrong. One doesn't have to have played in the NHL to be knowledgeable about the sport. Third, I just heard the God awful "Kevin and Rock" show on WJFK bashing hockey (I was expecting to hear the Junkies). The nitwit named Rock even made a comment about how they were going to lose their listeners by talking hockey even though the Caps are the number two team in town right now by attendance figures, ratings, etc. He's a fool. But ESPN 980 is making a good faith effort to increase Caps coverage and should be commended. (12/23/10)

Not many of y'all are familiar with - much less concerned about - the Washington Ear radio reading service for vision-impaired folks. The Silver Spring organization reads magazines and newspapers over dial-in lines and radio subcarriers for people who cannot. Their funding is in trouble and the service is in danger of being eliminated and replaced by those lousy computer-generated voices. I have no stake in the service myself, either as a listener or volunteer, but it'd be unfortunate indeed if yet another branch of local radio service in this burg were to go away. Details on the possible loss of the service can be read at www.washear.org... Just sign me "31-year career broadcaster". (12/23/10)

Keep up the great work! You play such an important role in keeping the "suits" honest in this town! Knowing DCRTV is available for staff/friends to post what is real, makes them think twice about doing something really nasty! But then they go and do it anyway... (12/23/10)

In Dana Milbank's column in today's Washington Post, he refers a couple of times to President Obama's Tuesday news conference, which was held on Wednesday. The caption on the photo accompanying the column refers to Wednesday's news conference. -- Bobbie (12/23/10)

As a Caps fan, it was great to see The Sports Junkies get embarrassed on HBO last night. The Sports Junkies were dismissed by the team as not knowing anything about the sport of hockey. The only part of their show that HBO didn't get is where they talk about "not being big fans" of hockey, being casual observers of hockey, or how they won't go to any games because they don't get free tickets. On a regular basis, they talk about how they would rather watch any other sport on TV over hockey, except for Cakes. He has a real interest in the sport, just not any knowledge. The other three know nothing, and admit to it. However, they are so dumb that they will think that they were awesome being on TV last night. As a side note, I don't understand the Capitals. They continue to put their players on with The Sports Junkies and other shows at WJFK even though the hosts clearly have no knowledge of the sport, don't watch the sport, and don't care about the sport. As the matter of fact, the only reason either station has talked about the sport over the last weeks at all is to debate whether or not Boudreau should be fired, or in the case of the Lavar Arrington and Chad Dukes who can only talk Redskins, will Boudreau be fired before Shanahan? At least 980 went out and hired two guys from the Caps to be on the air to be able to discuss the team. It's sad when the most knowledgeable hockey person in town, about the Caps and the sport, is Elliot and he's not even talking sports. I'm not a huge fan of his show, but I am a huge Caps fan and I know that when he interviews players, they are going to have real conversations. I'll flip his show on he's talking about watching a west coast feed game at 11:00 at night that was so good he couldn't turn it off. Listen to him interview a player, then listen to any of the others on The Fan or 980. There is no comparison. Last night made it clear, the Caps and the sport of hockey get no knowledgeable coverage here in Washington, DC and we have two sports stations. Actually, we have two Redskins stations who will, on occassion, mention something else and then relate it back to football. (12/23/10)

(regarding a previous post) "Ok, can we be granted a Christmas wish--and drop all of the back and forth about KHZtv.com". I agree. This board is overrun with that, and the countless insipid posts by Zombie Woof. If such a change can't be done in the form of a Christmas wish, maybe it could happen in the form of a New Years resolution. Either way, it will help clean up the mess the Mailbag has become. If you took a vote, I think you'd find that a healthy majority here could very well do without all this nonsense. Personally, I'm about ready to learn to just do without my daily visits to DCRTV, I'm so sick of it. While I'm interested in news about the DC Radio/TV scene, the value of the board has been diminished because of having to navigate through all the horseshit posts in order to get to the stuff that's actually worth reading. Since my last post was apparently to long for someone's attention span, I will keep this short. I do know that there is a primary and a secondary anonymous poster. By the way, "assholeishness?" Do you go down on your mom with that mouth? To clarify: "When I checked out the silly little site that started this "debate" on the Alexa tracking site, it confirmed the original post: No traffic for the past three months" is wrong because the Alexa website is not a hit counter. It most certainly does not report "no traffic for the past three months" for KHZTV. If you argue that it does you could equally well argue that it reports "no traffic for the past three months" for DCRTV. Alexa is a ranking site, not a hit tracking site and since you seem slow I'll repeat that it only reports based on hits from users who have downloaded the Alexa spyware toolbar. - ZW (12/23/10)

Funny moment on WASH-FM. The "Christmas in Washington" song came on about 11:00am but apparently it was the customed version for WMZQ. So throughout the song it kept saying WMZQ...the announcer came on and said apparently that was the wrong version. It made me laugh!!! (12/22/10)

ZombieWolf, if you could tone down your assholeishness for two seconds and actually read posts before responding to them, you'd see that (A) I wasn't the original poster, (B) I never claimed Alexa was anything other than what it is, (C) there are plenty of web traffic tools out there, and pretending that there aren't -- and that they won't give virtually identical results -- is (typically) stupid of you, and (D) my lack of a tag at the end of my post is no more anonymous than the series of childish nicknames you've given yourself. Sign your actual name, if you think that's of any value to anyone. But, trust me, nobody cares who you are. (12/22/10)

FRED FOY: 1921-2010. One of the great voices of radio and television is silent, tonight, at least here on Earth. Fred Foy, the voice of "The Lone Ranger" intro on radio and television, the announcer on ABC Television's "Dick Cavett Show" and longtime ABC national TV voice, died today at 89 years of age. Please click on the following link to hear the “Lone Ranger” intro, recorded in the 1980s at Flight Three Studios in Baltimore. It was engineered by Jay Harrison and post-produced by Kris Earl Phillips. The "William Tell Overture" was written by Gioachino Rossini: www.davidtate.net. I was standing next to Fred when he recorded this, in only one take, completely from memory. I’ll never forget watching him do this amazing piece of audio theatre. Tonight, I am happy to report to you that Fred Foy has just been promoted to Chief Announcer in the biggest market in the Universe. We already miss him down here, though. Earlier post, "About WMAL. I'm so glad I don't live near that transmitter site." Yeah, you're so right! All WFED does is bleed into nearby cheap telephones.. the ones on bloster-packs at Wal-Mart. Those living near the WMAL site probably have to cope with mysterious toilet flushes. Especially weekdays between 5 AM and 12 Noon. Ahhh.... The wonders of "The Dolly Parton Effect"! When I checked out the silly little site that started this "debate" on the Alexa tracking site, it confirmed the original post: No traffic for the past three months." Yes, now that you mention it, I've heard of computers. "Alexa ranks sites based on tracking information of users of its Alexa Toolbar for Internet Explorer and from integrated sidebars in Firefox and Chrome. Hence the page is _only ranked between users who have these sidebars installed_ and may be biased if specific audience is reluctant to do this (Windows Defender has classified the sidebar as malware while it assigns it to trojans where it does not belong). Also, the rank is based on three month data and takes a long time to reflect changes in content that may happen after the domain has been sold. Finally low ranks cannot be accurate not just because of the lack of data but also because of statistic laws related to the long tail distribution. " Let's repeat, shall we? "Hence the page is _only ranked between users who have these sidebars installed_" Hence the inaccurate results. The Alexa traffic site doesn't display a count of hits even for dcrtv.com - ZombieWoof (12/22/10)

I agree with the poster about the "whining" on WNST. It seems like it never stops. That is one reason why I stopped listening to them. After Bob Haney and Rex Bachmann left the station, that was even more reason not to bother listening to WNST. Although i live in New Mexico now, I am still a big Baltimore sports fan and often listen to Fox 1370 or 105.7 the fan. Glad to hear that Mike Popovec is getting some work these days, I enjoy listening to him do sports. Burt in Rio Rancho, NM (12/22/10)

Ok, can we be granted a Christmas wish--and drop all of the back and forth about KHZtv.com. Negative or positive, none of the posts are constructive and accomplish anything. Instead, they display how desperate some people are, and more importantly how vindictive our industry is. KHZ and the staff there should be commended for doing something "outside the box." But, then they should buy ad time like the rest of us do to promote it. I do not know of any PD that spends all day posting on DCRTV like some others do, but then again, I've never seen such a rabid amount of posts from those attacking that site. Both sides of the posts have flaws and both need to grow up. In the spirit of Mr. Griswold, Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, kiss my ass. Kiss his ass. Question Dave Hughes... Why do you delete so many stations from the Baltimore radio ratings list? Do you think us Baltimoreans who listen to Washington stations will be offended or something or just for brevity? Well guess what, us Baltimoreans are smarter than the average bear, maybe we really do wanna know! LOL (12/22/10)

Dave's response: Sometimes for brevity's sake in some of the weekly numbers, I'll list only the Baltimore market stations in the Baltimore radio ratings. If people say they want all the DC stations listed in the Baltimore radio ratings each week, I can include them. I always include all stations, including all the DC area radioers and a Wilmington station or two, in the Baltimore monthly radio ratings.....

By now, most of us have seen the news video of the Broadway "Spiderman" actor falling 30 feet after a harness failure. I'm a little bugged by something: cameras are "strictly prohibited" in almost all live performances anywhere. Can the camera operator - and by logical extension, any and all media outlets that aired the footage - be hit with a copyright violation? For one thing, I don't believe the "greater good" was served by putting the footage on the air; in fact I consider it gratuitous and titillating more than newsworthy. For another, sure the lucky "amateur video shooter" was in the right place at the right time, but why the hell was he running a video camera in a Broadway theater in the first place? Find the guy, arrest his ass, and have the owners of the Spiderman intellectual property sue him for whatever $$ he may have earned by selling his footage to a news clearinghouse --- unless he was stupid enough to put his video up on the web and not try to sell it. Ms. Gonzalez currently resides in Northwest D.C. with her husband and son. (12/22/10)

OOBEEE - You have some valid points, but only if WJFK was still just "Guy Talk". However its Sports Talk now and people like to hear live programming when it comes to Sports. You can chop up entertainment clips and replay them a million times I agree, but not on a Sports Talk Format. This is why both 980 and WJFK use National programming when no local On Air Talent is live. I would think thats something to think about. I also agree it was completely disrespectful to K&R to take a great "get" that went national and chop it up to appear completely asinine as if the station could care less of the relationship their talent has or had with Albert Haynesworth. Would this action risk others maintaining such a relationship? As for the comment on having a following I think you may underestimate the following these two have. with 12K Twitter followers they have more followers than just about everyone else on the station. While Chris Kinard has alot to consider he has put these two on for live programming and who else could step in for the Junkies with as much energy and entertainment on the station than the aforementioned Kevin and Rock? - P1/2 (12/22/10)

Happy Holidays Dave: For the past month, I've been listening to sportstalk radio over the internet and it's never sounded better. I spent the past two days listening to "local" sportstalk radio and I'm convinced, we've reached an all-time low. Several radio industry friends of mine have told me Snyder's ready to get out of the broadcasting business and it's quite obvious that the 980 people don't care what goes over the air. If the directive was to smear McNabb, it's working. However, doing this by people who don't have any credibility, that's a totally different subject. We all know how bad the talent is, let's just switch over to JFK and wait to see who offers Snyder the most money and hopefully, another new sportstalk station will appear on the FM band! (12/22/10)

Here's a link to watch a C-SPAN simulcast of The Larry King Show on Mutual Radio, which aired 27 years ago, on December 22, 1983. It seems like I ignited a storm here. I am not that much against the K&R as for the Junks. It is still a major market. Did the early Junks do am when Stern vacationed? Did the early BO&D replace D&M went on vacation? No. They were not ready and did not have a following yet. Re-runs, when properly selected from a GOOD format were like an old friend stopping by. In fact, I think CK screwed K&R by taking their big coup, the Fat Albert interview #2, and chopping it up to make really disparaging commercials about FA. Were K&R ever going to interview FA again? I agree with the guy who said stagger the Junks. Why not now like in the past? Something is up. Games are being played. I agree with the other writer who said they have phoned it in lately but the format is like noose around their necks. I know Fad preps like a M-Fer and TRYS to get Lavar to sound like he prepped but the format kills his talent. (Do you know how many drinking games you can play with Lavar? The “I mean” or” I don’t know”, “That is a good question”etc) Robots could be programmed to do this format. Skins, Controversy, We love the Caps the Better than the other station, Wizards and John Wall, Gilbert, and more Skins…. Call in about the last cliché we just discussed. Angry callers, controversial host opinions that, at times, are so contrived. Please. And, this all points to the Junks going Podcast! Then, they would have to work. Ask Mike. If I could sell my company right now and buy 1500 AM, I would. I would bank roll it to start and let each show start to pay a royalty to me after one year. The rest is theirs. Turn each show into a store at a radio strip mall. Capitalism baby! Newbie’s like K&R, See you at night. Earn it there and we will see. Oh, and to the Mr. Tony guy with regard to ratings. He brings it in. If he did not, he would end up in my radio strip mall next to bagel city. Did I see someone suggest that Kevin and Rock have over 10K Facebook Friends and Fans as well as almost 13K Twitter followers are all dumb black and white people who are poor? Or is it that some here are used to the status quo? For one person to say they listened to 20 minutes of any show and determined it was lame gives you no credibility. For others it's known you come here to hate on anything possible and you serve only as a virtual PD that has no power. It's a good thing you don't represent the mass audience that has grown with these two gentlemen since their time on the air began at CBS. (12/21/10)

Re: K&R vs Junkies. How did this conversation turn into Junkies vs. K&R. I know these guys both and for those who are misinformed about them being lapdogs for CK, thats an absurd statement. As for them auditioning for the Junkies job or taking a fraction of their pay to slide into that spot, they have openly said on the air. They are just trying to make their way. They both have jobs and I doubt highly they will quit those jobs to accept chump change just to be on the radio. I think this message board is very very funny with all the misinformation and assumptions. I also picked up the code words for Urban and Smart Audience, when plenty of folks have called in who were obviously white. I guess it was sarcasm when the gentlemen stated black people dont listen to sports talk. If not sarcasm it must be pure ignorance. Many of you cant accept change and it shows. For the individual who said they tie life into sports and mix it up, you certainly have not listened to Kevin and Rock and they are liked by many Black and White.- Gentle Soul (12/21/10)

After listening to the back and forth, I just have to chime in with all the K&R vs the Junkies talk. First off, the Junks were staggering their vacation one Junkie at a time to keep the show fresh. I guess no one wanted to work the last weeks of December. OR maybe it's a test run in the morning for K&R??? Second, being a long time Junkies listener, I think they're not putting in the work and show prep that they need to do. They brag about showing up right before the show starts and I'm sure they roll out of there once 10:00 comes around. They've made a career of slacking off, and its painfully obvious in comparison to Colin Cowherd, Czabe or (puke in my mouth) Mike and Mike. From the (lack of) guests they get to the stupid show fillers they do such as "name that hurting" or any other thing they do on "game show wednesday", I think they are just coasting along. K&R are fresh, they utilize twitter much better than any of the Junks do to land guests on a regular basis. They got the biggest fish in the Washington sports landscape this fall by getting that Haynesworth interview about a month ago. And as for Korny coming in at #17, I'm sure that's not what Snyder was thinking when he signed him on for who knows how much ca$h. If you compare the numbers of what The Herd's show on 570 gets which goes up against Korny in the same time slot, I'm sure there's a marginal difference between the two. And that includes the now routine screw-up from the board-op who fails to turn off the alternate feed for the 1st half hour on a routine basis! (12/21/10)

I accidentally came across Cruisin’ 1968 online, which featured WCAO’s Johnny Dark. Johnny sounded absolutely great as always, but that it was a re-creation was evident since several of the jingles weren’t on the station until 1971. Finding it was a really nice surprise. Roddy Freeman (12/21/10)

Re: Should Chris Kinard allow other stations to kill his ratings by running old Junkies segments which have no relevance currently? You clearly are not a radio person…. And you are???? (Is this CK or Blue Shorts?) Talk radio is personality driven. And, in most cases, locally driven. If you just want sports news, you have two other stations covering the same stuff. You also have smart phones and ESPN.com. I want my Junks in the am. Best of Junks beats K&R when it comes to entertaining me on my way to work. Why doesn’t JFK cover Gilbert being traded on the weekend? Important sports news only happens during the week? I don’t want sports news and the same topics on three stations every F-ing day. I want entertaining sports talk with real life splashed in. Like the Old Junks. Like Mr. Tony. Like the Sports Reporters. Not a college radio show like K&R. Don and Mike always ran best of. How were their ratings? Timely sports news? Are you kidding me? I guarantee Czab gets a boost from this stunt. M&M on 980 usually suck except for the fact they get heavy hitters on as guests. Pulling Junks Best Of for K&R is plain stupid or a lead up to the end of the current Junks contract. In fact, it might be a check to see if CBS can get 60-70% of the audience for 10% of the salary. The F-ing format destroys natural radio talent like the Junks and Dukes. Listen to BO&D’s podcast this week and compare it to his Lavar show. You tell me who you would rather listen to while you are stuck on the Beltway. Can K&R pack a casino in AC in this economy? CK is a suit attached to strings that head up I95 to NY. Period. I'm not a radio person, but I do know that ratings this time of year don't count. Why don't you know that? Sounds like a tryout to me. If CK1 is the Lisa Lampanelli of radio (btw that's a code word) maybe he's taking a no lose opportunity to broaden the station's audience, because everyone knows black people don't listen to the Sports Junkies, right? Dear Santa....My name is Paul...But my friends call me Davy....Oh who am I kidding....I have no friends....All I want for Christmas is a new baby name book (It makes for a great tool when I'm spamming the DCRTV mailbag with fake names), just one business venture that doesn't fail (KHSomethingSomethingSomething.org just isn't taking off), and an abacus (seeing as I originally said we had seven staff members, but just listed ten). I know I've been a naughty boy for....oh let's say 55 years...but if you bring me these things, I promise to be a good boy stop acting like a real radio guy. Yours in Christ, Lil' Pauly B. (12/21/10)

Both of the publicly-accessible web traffic tools I used show khztv.com receiving no hits during the past three months. None. That could mean as many as a few hundred hits total during that period...or it could mean, literally, no hits. Call that gainful employment if you want, but back here on planet earth that's a failed vanity project. Karma's a wonderful thing, ain't it? (12/21/10)

I was the original poster who commented on Kevin and Rock filling in for the Junkies. I was not trying to suggest that they were the best radio show in the history of mankind - just that they seemed to be a better option than some of the other offerings on that station. I've listened to the Junks for years and still love what they do. I agree the ideal lineup for the station is Junks, The Mike O'Meara show, and Big O and Dukes - you pick the rotation. I download both of the latter's podcasts daily/weekly. But since that format doesn't seem to be coming back or resurrecting itself anywhere else on terrestrial radio, I was just trying to point out that of the options they have, K&R are a lot better than Mike Wise or Lavar Arrington. Mike Wise just doesn't have the timing (or maybe the intellect) to handle the fast-paced world of talk radio - sports or any other kind. His delivery is stiff, his jokes fall flat, his canned bits always flop and his ideas are unoriginal. In trying to portray his "nice guy" image, he routinely reins in material on his show that could actually be compelling or entertaining. Lavar is the typical post-career athlete - trying to get by on his name, uttering one incoherent cliche after another. Hearing an ex-athlete talking about how much harder he played than most of today's crop, all while mixing metaphors and butchering the English language just doesn't do it for me. As it is now, as soon as the Junkies are done, I switch to Tony's show, stay through Sheehan and Loverro (unless Sheehan gets too Redskins, X's and O's geeky), download TMOS, and listen to it and Czaban on the way home. The ratings make it look like everyone else does, too. If WJFK wants to retain some of the Junkies audience, they need to mix it up a little! (12/21/10)

Hey Dave: Thought this might be worth a mention: Wasn’t it about a year ago that Stephen A. Smith replaced DC local Steve Czaben on Fox Sports Radio in the mornings? I seem to remember Czabe wasn’t too happy about the change at the time… Anyway, keep up the good work and happy holidays! (12/21/10)

RE: "I was surprised to hear that The Junkies did not air “best of” segments during their vacation" I see no sense or common sense in this statement. In sports you have something happening every single day. The Kevin and Rock show are "filling in" for the Junkies should something happen and they are able to report on it during morning drive. As Kevin and Rock said on their twitter; those appear to be a lot of "code words" in your statement. Also for them to be so bad you seem to have quite an assessment of them. - P2 (12/21/10)

I've seen WRC-TV sports anchor/reporter Lindsay Czarniak anchoring local newscasts during the Today show on Monday and Tuesday. Could she be prepping to swap jobs with WRC's news reporter and weekend news anchor Craig Melvin? (12/21/10)

I saw WBAL-TV news reporter Lowell Melser doing the noon weathercast on Tuesday. Emergency fill in? Seems odd considering it could be argued channel 11's weather department is overstaffed. (12/21/10)

Three more hours of awkward radio with Autism Hill on AM 630 The Boner. Toward the end a caller finally got his "erection" in (in the sense of saying the word). I was surprised to hear that The Junkies did not air “best of” segments during their vacation. For several years now, they have always aired “best of” during their vacations. Their morning replacements are Junkies’ imitators and lap dogs for 106.7 The Fan, program director, Chris Kinnard. The Junkies and Kinnard rose to success together and now he basically undermines them. The Junkies are probably very nervous that their replacements will do well and critically hurt their leverage in negotiating a new contract with The Fan. CBS may just say to them, we have your replacements here at the station and you Junkies are costing this station a lot of money. The k&r replacement show is a better fit for an urban station or another market. They mostly appeal to a younger, urban listener so maybe they can land somewhere else. The Fan is really going downhill with the sports format. I would be shocked if they are retaining their blue-chip advertisers given that the listeners do not seem very sophisticated or educated. If you want to hear good, intelligent, talk radio again, listen to: The Big O and Dukes podcasts, The Mike O'Meara Show podcast, and satellite radio. Thank you. (12/21/10)

Are you kidding me? Kevin and Rock sound like BDK doing sports. I was right over to Czab. What is CK thinking? Is this posturing for negotiations with Junks or a preview of what will happen if they move to afternoons? Best of Junks is much better than K&D! Last week’s shows would be great repeats. The Junks were free lancing. It was great. Good to see MOS back yesterday too. And, damm, the Big O and Kukes podcast this week rocked. OOBBEE (12/21/10)

A DCRTVer posted..."I live about one mile east University Blvd West, Arcola Ave from WFED-AM 1500's towers and I'm noticing a sharp increase of bleed through on my landline telephone service.” ------- I used to have a home recording studio in my former home near Connecticut Ave and Viers Mill Road. WTOP used to always bleed through my equipment (no matter how much filtering and phase canceling circuitry I tried to install inline). Example: one October night in 1989, I was overdubbing a guitar solo for a friend's LP he was recording at my place when I suddenly heard WTOP spilling into my 7506s with the words "And there's damage all over the Fisherman's Wharf, Oakland and downtown Santa Cruz!" That's how I found out about the Loma Prieta earthquake! (12/21/10)

Re: "The other day he did a segment rant about moving on and that he has moved on and is no longer part of the Don and Mike show. I understand, respect this and even believe it must be frustrating for him since he probably has a strong D&M following listening online." And this is a bed Doni G made for himself. He could have taken a number of gigs (wasn't he up for a job in Detroit?), but chose the very same time slot at one of the D&M show's strongest affiliates, doing a very similar type of show. He hasn't really "moved on", he's just "moved over". Thus, he's gonna be stuck with this as long as he's doing middays on KHTK. (12/21/10)

You guys must be kidding. Kevin and Rock is the worst friggin' radio show I've ever heard on a DC sports station. Even worse than Thompson. It sounds like a couple of high school kids doing their show over the school loudspeaker. Unprofessional, sophomoric and seemingly aimed for a low IQ audience. WJFK could do much better. (12/21/10)

I love the Tony Kornheiser Show, however I can not stand David Aldridge on it. He adds nothing to the show, he just laughs like an idiot about everything. When he talks about any issue it is always racially biased. I can not understand why Tony has him on the show. (12/21/10)

I was listening to WJFK and their fill-in show for the Junkies and I was struck by how much better they were than the Mike Wise show. Funny, quick-witted, entertaining, real chemistry - all the things Mike Wise doesn't seem to be. How about this for a revitalized lineup WJFK? Mornings - Junkies, Midday - Kevin and Rock, Afternoons - Chad Dukes and Holden Kushner, evenings Bill Rohland. Jettison Wise and LaVar, who just don't seem to have "it" on the radio, and make the most of the talent you have. (12/21/10)

Dave's response: I like Kevin and Rock. Mike Wise is an excellent writer. But his radio skills still aren't quite "there" yet. Very much like Tony K, another excellent writer who still (!) can't carry a radio show without three or four talented radio people around him to "prop him up".....

Just looking at the latest PPM numbers and the battle between the two sports stations. Adults 25-54: AM Drive: The Fan 12th, ESPN 980 17th... Midday: The Fan 20th, ESPN 980 17th... PM Drvie: The Fan 19th, ESPN 980 12th... I was able to see Men 25-54 for AM Drive only. ESPN 980 is in 7th place, The Fan is in 9th place. It doesn't really look like either one is doing well. I was saddened to hear of the death of ABC Radio News Anchor Clarissa Douglas. I never knew her personally, but heard her over the years on ABC and CBS stations. Some people just stand out among the many on radio and television. Clarissa was certainly one of them. Her professionalism, style and presentation made her, without a doubt, just a little different than the others. The magic of radio will sometimes do that with certain people. It can make some larger than life. I know news people should never think of themselves as stars, but this one, Clarrisa, was one because she was exceptional at what she did. Radio has lost one of the special ones. (12/21/10)

So tonight I decided to brave a trip to TBD.com to check out their weather page. They have their big mug shots of Doug Hill and Bob Ryan at the top of the page, but the written forecast started off as follows: "ABC 7 Forecast...The cold continues and you may not have to dream about a white Christmas!...ABC 7 Meteorologist Alan Auglis..." A quick Google searched reveals that Alan Auglis is (or was) a meteorologist at WTMD in Salisbury. Did WJLA/TBD hire ANOTHER weather person? Or maybe he just contributes for the TBD website? Between the faces that appear on WJLA and TBD/Newschannel 8, plus the folks you hear on WTOP, they've already got a ton of weather people at that network. Just curious... (12/21/10)

Hey Burt in Del Rio....you hit the nail on the head! Following my post of the Larry King song, there was an erroneous post in regard to my tenure at NPR, which lasted from a few weeks after their founding and continued just over five years, including time as a freelancer after I left the staff position of reporter/producer. I was not working at NPR during the May Day Demonstrations of 1971, so I could not have been arrested covering those demos. In later years, I was threatened with arrest, and detained briefly, in Moscow and Cuba. I was in Moscow as the first NPR reporter to cover a major summit meeting and in Cuba while working for my own news service, Capital Broadcast News, a service for network affiliated local television stations across the nation. The guy who did outstanding and rather biased (both at the same time) in the streets of DC during the arrest of more than 13,000 people was Jeff Kamen, who uttered the famous line, "It's a crime to have long hair in Washington today", because people were being swept up off the streets and taken to RFK stadium (just like the military juntas). That was the very first day of live programming for NPR and All Things Considered, so that line and others made it into the Newseum and history books, even though many thousands of hours of programming followed. I covered the space program and general assignments at NPR, but it was a brief part of my career, which continues. I only mentioned NPR because most people, now all these years later, know what it is. Thanks! Doug Terry (12/20/10)

Some of the comments on here making fun of KHZTV and laughing about "gainful employment" are a laugh for sure. Maybe some of the people making these comments need to look for gainful employment on their own. Regarding outsourcing customer support it happens a LOT. Most companies these days do it. Having spent more than my share of time on hold with different customer service or tech support reps, I'll take the Philippines agents over India any day. Whenever I am on with someone from India (yes Sprint customer service & Verizon DSL support I mean you) invariably the conversation goes twice as long with me having to say "I'm sorry what did you say?" and me needing a stiff drink afterward. This would have worked out a lot better 15 to 20 years ago when the dial wasn't so cluttered, or even better 30 years ago when the FCC downgraded sub-100 watt "Class D" stations to the lowest caste of radio. On the bright side, the marketplace has decided that failed HD technology is eventually going away. [The FCC is a joke.....] No kidding! Two words: "Net Neutrality." When I heard Austin Hill was "subbing" for Chris Plant today, I thought "great!" because he's usually a welcome relief from Plant's muslim bashing. And voice. Well, I was wrong. It was one idiot after another with the occasional gay guy thrown in. The first idiot caller thought Congress doesn't have constitutional authority "To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces" then a fellow named Preston called in (remember the episode of MASH when Harry Morgan asked a black soldier to "Give us a number! You know, a number!" Well, I wanted to ask Preston to give us a number. His intellect made me question Truman's judgement for just a second.) Preston predicted violence when gays were allowed to serve openly in the military. His phrase was "cold-cocked." Some yenta who considered herself a veteran because she was married to a guy in the army just should not be allowed to speak, ever. The occasional gay military member would call in, and Hill would make a point of saying "You'll notice I haven't asked you about your homo...[pause].. your sexuality" but he would harangue them if they used the terms "homophobic" or "bigoted." He asked the straight people if they had ever served with gays in the military, and the answer was invariably "Of course" but he never asked the obvious followup question: "So you've showered with homosexuals, right?" Throughout the show Hill's main concern was that showering with homosexuals might cause "something awkward" to happen. He danced around it, but his big fear was that either the gay guy or the straight guy would pop a boner. What a bigoted homophobe. Fortunately one of the main sponsor's of this morning's show was the Kennedy Center's new production of South Pacific. That's right, people. Show tunes! Dave, the Mailbag has been flooded lately by a lot of know-nothing know-it-alls displaying their lack of knowledge about ratings and revenues. Sounds to me like they all listen to under-achieving djs rationalizing their lack of numbers. The fact is, not every station is going for the same demos or the same revenue streams. The fact that this has to be pointed out to people who claim to work in the industry is stunning. If you really think anyone at WPGC or WMZQ is trying to figure out how to tap into the core audience at WTOP or WAVA (or vice versa), you really don't understand this business at all. And the oft-repeated silliness about a single "prime" demo can be shelved now, please. Getting 20-year-old white men to listen to your station isn't the only way to make money. (12/20/10)

Regarding the post "in what universe do ratings not equal money". Ever worked in CHR? That format is the one where excessive expense to generate ratings almost without question will not translate to advert. dollars. What you spend in that format, you rarely gain back. There are a limited number of quantity demo over quality demo advertisers who will spend money with you, and then only with high ratings, but the cost to get the ratings is almost always higher than the return. Granted, PPM may shift that, but not yet. OTOH, where a format attracts a quality demo, there are many very successful stations that generate significant profit with 'low' ratings. WGMS was one for many years when it was a commercial station. For some time that WPGC has the highest ratings, its was WGMS and WASH that had the highest revenue. You have to remember that many of your advertisers are not your listeners, and those who listen are clueless about advertising. You often are selling your ratings to ad execs who live in another market, and listen to something else, or not at all. It is a mistake made by many sales-oriented GMs to assume that high ratings will get high revenue. What works much better is to go for the highest practical ratings, which can be achieved at lower cost, and thus afford you some latitude in your advertising rates. But when your remote costs $5,000 to produce (techs, technology, t-shirts, vehicles etc all add up), and you can only charge $2,500 for it, it doesnt matter how much cume you had for that 4 hours at the bar or car dealer. That is why CHR doesnt last. High cume, possibly high TSL, high 12+ ratings, mediocre median age ratings, not going to get the revenue from a buyer in NY or LA because the demo driving those high ratings is cash poor and doesnt have the discretionary income to buy products to support those ratings. This is also why some daytime only AMs do quite well with informational formats. (12/20/10)

A post from "...Doug Terry, a former reporter for NPR...." Doug's claim to fame as an NPR reporter was going out on the streets of DC to cover the May, 1971 anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. The DC police arrested him for his trouble. Moral of the story: If you are of the same age and hair length as the demonstrators, don't expect preferential treatment. What fun watching Channel 4's 11 p.m. newscast on Saturday. The picture was randomly changing from full screen to letterbox to box-box (what is the proper term for bars all around?). Don't know whether to blame WRC or Comcast. The visual effects did not improve Craig Melvin's performance as an anchor. (12/19/10)

Surfing the radio dial Saturday afternoon when I stopped on WJFK and the kevin and rock show. At apporximately 4:35 pm they took a call from woman named Moiya(sp?). Moiya described herself as a Houston transplant and had long harbored a hatred for the Cowboys. But she said with the treatment of Donovan Mcnabb she was rooting for a Dallas victory over the Redskins. "rock" responded by saying she should have her clitoris cut off for making such a statement. Don't think I ever heard Stern, Don and Mike and even the moronic sport junkies say such a thing. I'm sure brown noser CK and Big Daddy Dan Mason should be very proud. (12/19/10)

Great to see the DCRTV flashback featuring NBC's Russ Ward. He covered the White House for many years way back when. Today, he's retired and living the good life in the Annapolis area where he is an avid sailor. A wonderful man! Love DCRTV plus. (12/19/10)

Wow. Mel. The gift that keeps on giving. Of ten companies in danger of bankruptcy, two are poster children of the Karmazian fungus. CBS and Sirius. One guy is responsible for 20% of that list. It is fair to include CBS as a product of Mel, because that is where all the debt was brought in, and all the jestison of valuable property was ordered. For Sirius, it's funny how they singled out re-sign of Stern as a problem. Do-oh!! How this clown, Mel remains a darling of Wall Street and broadcasting is beyond me. How he alone finds value in Stern, which nobody in real radio wanted, remains a mystery to many. It really is time for the SEC to investigate, but they couldn't handle Maddoff so probably Mel gets off too. Stern, you are irrelavant. Only you and Mel don't realize it. (12/19/10)

As for the 10 firms that article lists that could go bankrupt, here are my thoughts: Sirius-XM is long overdue, very high overhead (no pun intended) and no serious (Again, no pun…) revenue streams. Re-signing Howard Stern tells me that they are following an orbital version of the WMAL business plan. Howard may be dirty, but he’s getting old. And, so is his schtick. Bob Hope had the creativity and flexibility to remain relevant into his 90’s. Howard is starting to show his age. Being dirty by itself is not enough… Borders is a very good candidate considering their efforts to buy rival Barnes & Noble. Such a buy would kill the better (B & N) of the two (always the goal of a takeover by a competitor of lesser quality.) But, this reminds me of the Studebaker-Packard merger of the 1950’s in which both firms eventually died after the greater of the two was cheapened (and euthanised (liquidated)… CBS, I’d say is highly unlikely. While their management and executive teams can be clueless about the real world, they are also alert enough to pull the plug before things get nasty. There was another firm in that article which bears watching: Cablevision… If they sink, I’d watch for Time Warner Cable (separate from Time Warner) to go for it. However, if the Comcast/NBCU deal either falls through or isn’t approved before Cablevision sinks, I’d expect Comcast to immediately kill the NBC deal and make a very serious play for Cablevision. Why? Comcast is a Cable TV company, first and foremost. In spite of their name, Comcast has never been a “broadcaster” per se, and had to be dragged kicking and screaming by industry peers (followed by competition) into providing telephone and even high-speed internet, products which are very profitable, but as communications services, are anathema to Comcast’s corporate DNA. Cablevision would make a nice fit for either Comcast or TWC. This is also of local relevance as TWC has a major corporate presence right near DCRTV’s interplanetary HQ –Unsigned Corporate Suit (12/19/10)

Are the rumors true that, in purchasing WAMD for $1, Bill Parris asked he could pay that in installments? (12/19/10)

I was flipping through the channels overnight and wound up on 7's Weather Now. How long has Doug Hill been gone from WJLA? His face is still on the top and an ad with him being touted as Washington's most trusted weather source is still cycling through on the left of the screen. Hilarious and questionable. Screen cap below: Is anybody paying attention over there?! Chase, Luray (12/19/10)

The conspiracy theorist in me is worried about the MOS podcast missing two days after Rob-bay told a very graphic story about his kids getting sick on the same show that they discussed Buzz’s near death pneumonia ….. Now, if anyone can ad lib a story like that it’s Rob-bay. He can also spin a real yarn too. They made such a big deal about Rob-bay’s possible germs as well as Buzz’s brush with death and his “strong wife”. I can think of several possible theories as to why one or both were staged…if they were? D&M and MOS have pulled these things before; and for various purposes. Anyone else feel this way? "that sucking sound in the corner of a dark lonely room. -- Uncle Frank in Arlington" Uncle Frank? Is that you? - ZW (12/18/10)

So, I thought I'd give 106.7 The Fan a listen. 2 minutes into K&R, one of the douchebags is relating a story about calling a teacher a fag... using the word... followed by the throwaway line "well, he was one", and the obligatory guffaws from the other douchebag... at any rate, this is the reason that 1) I will never again turn that station on, 2) the sophomoric cesspool that is local DC radio has lost me, and 3) as long as attitudes like this are re-enforced over and over, American society will continue to recede into that sucking sound in the corner of a dark lonely room. -- Uncle Frank in Arlington (12/18/10)

Looks like you've gone from bad to worse on the correction of your correction. You've corrected one error in the original ("Nowhere in the correction is the article's author, Walter Pincus, mentioned") but forgotten to take care of the repeat of it ("The article didn't make the errors, Pinkus did."). Dumb enough. But what's with correcting your copy without any acknowledgement that the original item was wrong in the first place? Aren't you supposed to do that? And wouldn't holier-than-thou media critics like you zing any local media outlet that tried the same kind of sneaky "journalism"? (12/18/10)

Dave's response: Is that you, Paul Farli, er Farhi. Ha ha ha.....

Dave, During the past week, I've heard WPGC start playing a handful of current songs that, while they fall into the "rhythmic" or "dance" category of music, are more in line with what I hear on Hot99.5...songs that Urban-leaning 'PGC would've never touched a year - or even a few months - ago. Have you heard any more about that suspected tweaking of 'PGC to challenge Hot99.5 you mentioned during the Spring when Donnie Simpson left the station? I wonder if this is the "subtle" beginning of it. Everything else sounds the same on the air in terms of the on-air talent and voice-over work. Then again, I suppose they'd hardly tell their listeners in advance that they're planning on moving the station in a more CHR-oriented direction. Have you heard anything from any connections you may have at CBS DC? Thanks, Jason (12/18/10)

Dave's response: I haven't heard anything about a format tweak at PGC, but it would make sense in light of the station's anemic ratings of late.....

"Dave's response: We've been told that Kornheiser's show is taped at 8 AM and runs at 10 AM (technically a rerun)" So, Dave, that means a brand new Tonight Show is technically a rerun? WRC's coverage of the Ironman Triathlon is technically a rerun? Is RobbRadio on KCJJ in Iowa a rerun? Is the MikeOmearShow on KCJJ and some station in Vermont (shouldn't there be an affiliates section on the MOS website?) a rerun? I'm as ready to mock Kornheiser as anyone (lose the combover, TK), but his taped live for broadcast on CBS radio is not a rerun. - ZW (12/18/10)

Dave's response: You're right. Since Korny's show is technically the "first run" of a recorded program, it isn't a re-run. But it ain't live.....

Gilbert Arenas just traded: Guess which website out of these three has it (TEM, TOP, JFK) has it first? Once again, TOP's webmaster beats the sports guys. OOBBEE (12/18/10)

Last night, I heard an hour of excellent, well researched, and insightful coverage of the McNabb benching on local radio with Broadus and Moseley. In fact, I get a lot of great coverage from this local station. Unfortunately for DC Radio, I was listening to Galloway & Co on KESN, the ESPN affiliate in Dallas. It's sad that we have two sports stations in this town, and I have to go to the Interwebs to get "Fair and Biased" coverage of my local teams. Oh, they talk Stars hockey there, too. -- Uncle Frank in Arlington (12/18/10)

Nobody tunes into an AM station to hear music. Hell, FM music stations are struggling with getting a return audience. The future of AM is news, talk, and public information. If people are going to sell stations for $1, sell them to owners who will actually put programming on that station and not aim to return to the days of yester-year. A better fit for WAMD is to run a feed from WFED or some other source for federal and government news. Parris and Bicknell may have done well in the past, but they don't have one clue about the future. If the KHZ Network is serious about making money, I suggest renting out station space for ham radio clubs from Annapolis and the Eastern Shore. Parris' station isnt a business, its a reminder of bad radio that destroyed this once great industry. Successful radio stations have more than one advertiser.- Signed, your favorite, no name (12/18/10)

Looks like Rosenberg was mistakenly identified in another Hot 97 controversy. Apparently, people wanted his head because they thought he made an insensitive comment about Hatians having HIV. However, to take heat off Rosenberg, his co-host offered this apology... (12/18/10)

"Walter Pinkus"? Um, Dave, if I'm not mistaken (and you are), I think you mean Walter Pincus, who's been at the Post for about 700 years. You might want to run a correction to your post. Or did your post make the error, not you? Doctor, heal thyself... (12/18/10)

Dave's response: Hey don't blame me! The Front Page newsblurb apologizes for the error. Ha ha ha.....

The post on the Post has an error in it -- it's Pincus, not Pinkus. And how do we know with certainty it was Pincus who made the error? Likely, he did. But perhaps 3-4 or more editors handled the story before it was finished. I believe the Post's policy is: The Post made an error, collectively. (12/18/10)

(regarding Dave's response) "We've been told that Kornheiser's show is taped at 8 AM and runs at 10 AM (technically a rerun), so it couldn't get the breaking Grossman-replacing-McNabb news that Wise on WJFK was running. Well, I guess it's time for an eye exam. I read that "Greaseman". (12/18/10)

Dave's response: The Greaseman might just be a good fit on Dan Snyder's radio team.....

Was flipping around the DirectTV dial last night (12/17), decided to check out MASN to see what was on, and discovered it was airing "Orioles Classics." However, I was unable to watch it, had I so desired, because DirectTV informed me the signal had been blocked. (I later checked the channel and it was carrying programs I could see.) Why did this happen, especially for a replay game? I've never before had MASN blocked by DirectTV. -- Vincent in Lynchburg (12/18/10)

[RE today's Rant on the WaPo:] I take no pleasure in saying it is a newspaper in collapse. [RE today's Rant on the WaPo:] the website is a freaking mess; you click on a link and it takes you to the front page of another section, not the story; then you get to that page and the story is either listed under a different title, or isn't there at all (12/18/10)

Greetings! Here is a link to a song about good ol'Larry sung by local musician Pat O'Neill and written by myself, Doug Terry, a former reporter for NPR and many television stations around the country. WHY WAS THE KORNHEISER RADIO SHOW ONLY ONE HOUR FRIDAY? DIDN'T THAT STATION FEEL HE COULD TALK ABOUT MCNA? AND WHY WAS KORNHEISER ASKING AUTO DEALERS ABOUT A DEAL ON A RENTAL VAN SO HE CAN DRIVE TO HILTON HEAD FOR GOLF OVER THE XMAS BREAK. HE MUSY BE MAKING OVER A MILLION DOLLARS, LET HIM GO TO HERTZ. WHAT A JOKE. KEEP IT UP. (12/18/10)

Dave's response: We've been told that Kornheiser's show is taped at 8 AM and runs at 10 AM (technically a rerun), so it couldn't get the breaking Grossman-replacing-McNabb news that Wise on WJFK was running. So, the powers that be at WTEM probably decided to yank the second hour of Korny for something live to report the breaking news. That's my guess. Oh, as for McNabb's downfall - he came here and the first thing he did was take ad money from evil Capital One. And one of those horrible red pushpins skewered his career.....

re: McNabb-WJFK...Kelli Johnson texted the news to Lurch Papa/Jason Bishop this morning just as their show ended. It was the end of the Junkies Christmas drunk show and for some reason, Lurch wanted to stay over late. Typically, he tries to bail out early. Maybe it was the drank but he stayed for the beginning of Wise's show and Lurch told Wise about the text. That's when Wise went about confirming the news. (12/17/10)

I'm OK with the idea that Harris & Company were able to do their show from the backseat of his whip, but did they have control over their RF plant?" This is true (3 hours or 3 minutes I believe depending on the circumstances). However many stations operate unattended with an ATS, dial-up and/or IP connected remote controls these days instead of the traditional systems of the past. So, if you have a cell phone in your pocket you probably have control of your transmitter. - Don (12/17/10)

From Fishbowl’s favorite sports junkie: While ex-Postie Tony Kornheiser was yakking about the weekend’s movies with WaPo film critic Ann Hornaday and hyping James Carville‘s upcoming “football picks” this morning, Post Sports columnist Mike Wise (the flyin’ Hawaiian) was breaking real news over on WJFK-FM… Wise apparently confirmed that the Redskins’ Rex Grossman would get the start Sunday vs. the Cowboys, instead of Donovan McNabb, the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Ironically, ESPN floated the Grossman story a couple of days ago but Wise won the day with confirmation. (12/17/10)

Hi Rita, AM radio intrusion into telephone circuits is fairly common but easily fixable. If you live close to the towers, the problem will be worse, obviously. Most of the time the problem can be traced to the phone company wiring. Any loose connection can start to look like a resistor and capacitor which will demodulate the radio signal. Very frequently, the problem can be traced to lightening arrestors in the phone line. After they do their job, they tend to break down and need to be replaced. Some wired and cordless phones have bad rf suppression. Any way you look at it, WFED is not the cause. Verizon is the solution. John (12/17/10)

I live about one mile east University Blvd West, Arcola Ave from WFED-AM 1500's towers and I'm noticing a sharp increase of bleed through on my landline telephone service. What kind of power and signal issues are going on? Is 1500 jiggering around with its directional signal? It seems that this bleed through flared up 2 weeks ago--I was hoping that it was an anomaly and would go-away...but, now, I'm getting somewhat annoyed. Dave, I usually respect your writing. But your story at pressbox online on Jay Cottrell is terrible. I worked with that guy at WOLB. He is a complete tool and liar. Just saw Fox 5 reporter Wisdom Martin on the air driving around on the beltway. It was pretty obvious not only was he not exercising his namesake in the situation but also it was obvious he was having a hard time focusing on driving. Not only is he risking his safety but the safety of the drivers around him. It looked like there was a bright light in the car illuminating him which if it is like any of the cameras if seen reporters use when I've watched them in person, is pretty darn bright and could distract the other drivers around him. Why aren't the cops pulling this idiot reports over and ticketing them for reckless driving??!!! Shame on the news organizations for sending their reports to file these idiotic type of stories. I don't think Bill Parris fully owns WKHZ 1590 Ocean City anymore. He partially sold it. And he probably won't own WYRE 810 soon either because both stations are under STA extensions, one of which has run out, so what did Parris do? He reorganized the ownership group for WKHZ to bring in the AM radio SIGNAL WAREHOUSING gurus from Delaware, WAMS 1600, ya know the guy who sold the station to his fucking WIFE just to get another Special Temporary Authority extension and therefor not have to build a new transmitter site, uh, for like over a decade now?! So now Parris gets WAMD for $1, the FCC gave the Delaware people he's in bed with at LEAST TWO FM translators and I think they're operating under STA too. Pretty soon there will be like a dozen stations all operating under Special Temporary Authority all worth $1 thanks to FCC stupidity. What should the FCC do? Very simple. Build a transmitting site that is NOT TEMPORARY and up to licensed specs or TURN IN YOUR FUCKING FCC LICENSE AND GET THE FUCK OFF THE AIR YOU LOSERS! Sorry for the language, but this FCC BS is just insane. So much for hope and change, back to the same old same old. None of these people should be technically approved to own a radio station by a strict interpretation of FCC rules. They've ALL VIOLATED their licenses! (12/16/10)

Previous post: Sounds like Bill Parris has found a niche. He could set up a network of 300watt $1.00 stations with one live full time airstaff and sell a few ads. With debt levels like that it shouldn't be too hard to make a buck. I'd take a deal like that. Tom R./Fairfax. Tom, from those who know you...You couldn't cut it. CR:0) (12/16/10)

A radio station for a dollar?!? I missed my chance. And local too. Waaaahhh. Donnie (12/16/10)

Dave's response: I was in a dollar store and saw a certificate of ownership for WMAL for a big fat buck - "intellectual property" only. The north Bethesda transmitter site and the leaky Jenifer Street studio not included.....

A fulltime, although lower power, AM for a $1. Sounds like Bill Parris has found a niche. He could set up a network of 300watt $1.00 stations with one live full time airstaff and sell a few ads. With debt levels like that it shouldn't be too hard to make a buck. I'd take a deal like that. Tom R./Fairfax. (12/16/10)

[Dave's response: If Dan Mason and Sam Rogers were smart, they'd take CBS's 94.7 and flip it to all news (with Lisa Baden) and go head-to-head with WTOP. Fuck trying to wrestle chick ad dollars from 97.1 and 107.3 and go after the big kahuna - WTOP. Even if they could get one-sixth of WTOP's ad revenue, it would be worth it.....] Dave, you think Dan Mason would want to lose the single biggest affiliate of the CBS Radio Network that is not an o and o? No way. Not gonna happen, at least with CBS. (12/16/10)

Glimpses of the Old Junks this week….Yesterday, they covered the FLA shooting like the old days. Then, their Hollywood Bellhop called in followed by “Name that Fatty” where Lurch said one contestant’s fantasy was to “Do the Celtics”. I almost spit out my coffee. On top of that, Cowboy Todd called in. It was great. Today, ER’s mom was hilarious. Are the suits and CK letting up or the boys working on getting the fan base back come hell or high water? Anybody know? OOBBEE (12/16/10)

Sigh ... flutter ... flutter. Sarah Caldwell, anchoring on WBAL television this morning. Wow. Note to management: PLEASE make it a New Year's Resolution to put her in the chair full time. Smart, good-looking, funny, knows how to deliver a line AND how to ad lib ! Warm, human, natural, etc. etc., etc. (12/16/10)

Still "remembering" SVRTV headlines? Nah, you are just making them up." Or perhaps looked at archived copies of the pages, by typing web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.svrtv.net into the browser. "Perhaps because you are just a lowly clown of a liar who likes to make shit up." No, there's no one like that here. Anyway, I have no Michael Vick in this fight. I'm unclear on what a Wikipedia page has to do with this, and what "bet they will be nice to know that" means. Clarification? - ZombieWoof (12/16/10)

I have to jump in and comment about the post that says WLIF “heads are going to roll because they are not #1 during Christmas.” Please get to know the system. The ratings that came out on Tuesday are for the week ending Wed, 11/24. WLIF didn’t start Christmas music 24/7 until 3pm on 11/24. So LIF had about 9 hours of Christmas music in the last trend. You won’t see any Christmas numbers until the next trend. (12/16/10)

Wow. Still stuck in 2007, eh? That's when I shut the site down. Ya know that was 3 years ago, right? Obsessed with "Westboro Baptist Church" so much it was plastered all over a Wikipedia article about WFQX (then it was "WAZT supports Westboro Baptist Church"...bet they will be nice to know that). Still "remembering" SVRTV headlines? Nah, you are just making them up. I never had seperate pages for my posts, they were all on the same page, just like DCRTV. So, yeah, making shit up. But what amuses me the most, you don't say who you are. I come straight out and sign my posts. Perhaps because you are just a lowly clown of a liar who likes to make shit up. Perhaps you should get your facts straight and come back and try again. Or just don't. - Tybois Uphold (12/15/10)

Al Peterson's "NTS Media Online" (not the local Al Peterson at Radio America) is calling Facebook inventor Mark Zuckerberg "the man who changed the media world forever". Is this an accurate assessment, in fact or opinion? Looking objectively, he launched an impressive and well-populated web social platform, and to that end he deserves the Person of the Year honor from Timemagazine. But is this development truly seismic enough to say it changed *everything*? The "media world" is pretty big, and I don't see throngs of people tearing down broadcast towers and dismantling printing presses just yet. IMO, saying the media world has been changed forever is open to debate. Who's in? (12/15/10)

"... Tybois maybe you haven't been paying attention when radio execs post on here..." Ah you pretty much hit the nail right there as to why Winchester and Martinsburg no longer have their own version of DCRTV. Ya see, Tybois Uphold was the webmaster for SVRTV. At first SVRTV was a very good site but it wasn't very long that it had became obvious that Tybois really did NOT know the market all that well. Where to start..hmmmm "...I don't know why WICL Cool 95.9 doesn't have the same ratings as what WARX Olides 106.9 had?.." ( Hmmmm Tybois could it be power? WICL has only 3000 while 106.9 has 50,000 ). "..The Bob & Tom Show on 104.9/105.5 is the most listened to morning show in Winchester.." ( OK..but what about WINC-FM's Barry Lee and Q102's Chris & Rosie...do they know? ). Reading his previous posts it seems Tybois is upset that WHAG doesn't do more for Winchester. Hellllooooo Tybois you got WHSV's TV3 Winchester for that and WHSV recently put up a translator in Front Royal so viewers without cable can watch Lauryn Ricketts and her weather forcasts so the "..TV3 Winchester is a Comcast cable only channel" no longer flies yet he won't correct himself. Then there was these gems..."..WEPM is only 500 watts", "...WFQX's Elwood King is the new PD for 95.3 The River..", "WTRM 91.3 supports the Westboro Baptist Church..", "...WSIG is to go LIVE 24/7.." all of this was totally untrue, yet it appeared on SVRTV anyway and oh when he would put stories on the site that were true, click on it and one would get some stupid cartoon with the words "..just kidding folks".Go figure !! I am sure Tybois Uphold is a very nice person but creditability? Sorry..ah no. (12/15/10)

Today marks the launch of a new nationwide Digital TV network, called "Me-TV". The new channel is a service of Weigel Broadcasting (owner of "This TV" with MGM). Me-TV shows classic programs from the libraries of Twentieth Century Fox and CBS Television Distribution. Besides sister network "This", their competitors are Retro Television Network and Tribune's "Antenna TV" (Antenna TV will launch on one of DC 50's subchannels). Wonder if any of the DC/Baltimore stations will add Me-TV to their digital signal? Here's a press release: metvnetwork.com (12/15/10)

Dave's response: Channel 50's adding Antenna TV at the beginning of 2011. I'm not aware of any local stations adding Me-TV.....

"Dave's response [regarding Robin Givhan's departure]: DCRTV broke the news yesterday afternoon. Today, we reported that she'll be going to the Daily Beast which is merging with Newsweek....." As of 3 pm Dec. 15 there is nothing on the Post's website about this. This time it actually is a scoop. Don't let'em tell you I never say anything nice, Dave. - ZW (12/15/10)

Do you really think WBAL asked investigators to confirm a newspaper report about the cause of the fire? More likely, the television journalists independently learned the cause from their sources. No credit to anyone else needed, unless of course your posting person has reason to think WBAL initially used the story without attribution. (12/15/10)

I've heard several interviews now with ESPN 980 hosts and Capitals Insiders Mike Vogel and Alan May. Those follow the station's announcement that they recognize that they have a credibility problem with Caps fans and are going about addressing that. I must say, I'm impressed so far. Both Vogel and May are very knowledgeable about the team and good on the radio. But, as important, the various 980 hosts seem to have done some research and are asking good questions. Yesterday, Doc Walker asked Alan May what seemed to be a coded question about the rumors that Alex Ovechkin and several other Caps do, perhaps, a bit too much partying during the season (and the playoffs), which is something that has been I have yet to really hear covered. May's response was a combined discussion of how much a celebrity Ovechkin is, but also how he needs to take care of his body to assure peak performance. Again, everything was very politically correct, but at least they touched on the issue. I haven't seen the Post or the hockey bloggers do that. I also heard Czaban and Pollin interview Mike Vogel yesterday and they asked serious questions without the condescension that pervaded any discussion of the Caps by either of those two for years and years. Putting aside the narrower issue of Caps coverage, ESPN 980 seems to have decided that they want to be more than a Redskins station and want to change their reputation of giving short shrift to the other local teams. We'll see how WJFK responds. But I find ESPN 980's new approach a positive for local sports fans........... (12/15/10)

Hey Dave, The Baltimore Sun's David Zurawik is reporting that FOX45 will expand their morning news to 10am starting on January 24th. The 9am hour will be called "Fox45 Good Day Baltimore". More at baltimoresun.com. -Greg in Perry Hall (12/15/10)

Dave's response: Got the story up on DCRTV's Front Page.....

At 10:32 a.m. this morning, the Baltimore Sun moved "Breaking News" that the "Fire on The Block was Intentionally Set, Source Says." At 11:32 a.m. (curiously one exact hour later), WBAL TV's "Breaking News" announced that "Sources have told 11 News" that the fire was intentional. Of course, the honorable thing for 'BAL to say would have been that "Sources have confirmed a Baltimore Sun report....". Bob A. in Pikesville, MD. (12/15/10)

Yes, no more Lisa Baden is a step in the right direction for WTOP in the morning. Unload Mike Moss and you've got an old listener back. Not only is Moss unbelievably cheezy on-air but as a lowly temp-slave, I had the pleasure of him sanctimoniously lecturing me about the evils of Howard Stern, my "lunch" break respite of choice on the overnight shift at old AP Radio. What an asshat. (12/15/10)

Checked again at 10 for the news and it was still frozen. Finally back around 10:05-10:10. Some Fox engineer had a very bad night... (12/15/10)

Dave's response: It seems to me that Channel 5 has more technical problems than the other DC TV stations, whether it's at the local end or with the Fox network. Last year, the station couldn't air a Redskins game without some major glitch. This season, the technical football coverage seems better, although the team still sucks. Of course, no DC TVer can match Sinclair's 45 and 54 for the sheer amount of technical screw-ups up there in Baltimore. Ha ha ha.....

Name a local TV meteorologist who actually does a LIVE WEBCAM CHAT DAILY. Nope, none of the most popular ones in DC or Baltimore that you would immediately guess. Does that dude at Duh Fan 106.7 ,I think her name is Chris Kinard, know anything about sports? Does he get orders from New York regarding what topics of the day are to be discussed? So these numbnuts Kevin y Rock be blowing themselves up because they had that interview with Haynesworth that resulted in him getting canned from the Dreadskins. Yes indeedee do Duh Rock is Alberts friend . A real friend might have told Phat Albert, dude you might be right but be a man and just keep your mouth shut and leave town after the season. That coach dude has the raisin eyes uh-oh has lil' danny done it agin? Do Duh Edge 105.9 and BIG 100 get there playlists from the same sorce? Sounds pretty much the same 'cept duh Edge plays all that Blac Sabbath stuff. Gimme them Ohio Express. Looks like that channel 4 Non Stop Washington channel is running out of material seem to be running the same thing over and over again. And a heavy reliance on stuff produced by NBC New York channel. Wonder if the Chicago and Los Angeles stations have some stuff to contribute. Have no idea if there's a Non Stop Chicago or Los Angeles though. Has the budget for the ESPN 980 Sports Reporters show been cut they seem to go far less to outside guests from 5-7pm than in the past. And whats this carp with ESPN 980 carrying the Maryland Women's Basketball games. Does this provide nappy poo time for the station engineer? (12/15/10)

Tydboi maybe you haven't been paying attention when radio execs post on here. It has been said, and said and said again, that ratings mean precisely dick to broadcasters. The real driving force is the sponsors and what they PERCIEVE as a station worthy of thier advertising dollars. It doesn't matter if 7 people listen to the station so long as the checks roll in on time. They'll even skew the numbers to justify flipping a format if a truly popular station doesn't attract the right amount of suckers. As for the "few" people who liked WHFS I don't recall reading about protests when WARW or WTGB flipped or any other station in the area for that matter. 80s HFS only sucked for the 70s listeners, the 90s sucked for (some of) the 80s listeners and so on......Donnie (12/15/10)

Just curious if anyone else noticed the 'audio quality' during Channel 4's local news casts. Apparently, per Rob Gibson Manager of Technical Operations, "...in order to help normalize our audio levels coming from our control room we have introduced some audio compression." I'm not a fan of the quality of audio compression they are using. Its to 'plosive' and makes Jim Vance sound like he's really got balls! I'd be curious if you or others noticed it. Keep up the good work/postings! Eric (12/15/10)

WTTG Fox 5 was off the air for around 45 minutes tonight, until just a few minutes into their 10 pm newscast. No signal, okay, must have been wind or cold, but no info on their website or Twitter account. Way to use social media Fox5 (actually they can be pretty innovative--but the only indication on the web of their downtime was a tweet by another viewer automatically fed into their page. Nothing at the top of the newscast either.) Chris/Manassas (12/15/10)

What's up with Channel 5? I just checked both television connected to Dish Network and my over the air TV and Channel 5 is out of service (or whatever the correct term is). I wanted to watch the 10PM News. So I don't know how long the station has been out. (12/15/10)

OTA WTTG-DT (Ch.5) looks like it's gone off the air , sometime during or just before GLEE. (12/15/10)

If 94.7 FRESH wants to really take on WASH and Mix they MUST HAVE a morning show. Now having Tommy McFly in the afternoons and then adding Kristie McIntyre into the lineup was good. But for the mornings they need to have someone like Mark Kaye - who was real popular here in DC when he was on Hot995. This might sound crazy but they could try and steal Sarah from 99.5 and give her own morning show. Good morning show and good lineup will put Freshfm up there with 97.1, 99.5 and 107.3. What do you think Dave? (12/15/10)

Dave's response: I think I said that when Fresh launched in the spring of 2009 - that former Hot 99.5 morning man Mark Kaye would be perfect for 94.7's mornings.....

"ZW - If you think those two morons on the Midnight Truckers shows aren't both stupid and bullies, then you don't know jack about bullying or current events." You talk like someone who lives in fear, someone who can't cope. I'm pretty up to speed on current events, as the recent discussion of Obamacare as a tax showed. Yes, a Virginia District Court disagreed, but another one didn't, and the Justice Department agrees with me (of course I don't agree with the Justice Dept., I just have a correct view of the administration's current position). Until it suits Eric "Racist" Holder to flip-flop. "As for bullying, one can practically hear them foaming into their mikes when a caller questions their positions on some topic." Are we listening to the same show? They engage their callers and treat them like adults. That's not bullying. "Almost as bad as the hosts are the commercials. In fact, the show is one long truck parts commercial interrupted by several minuets per hour of "'Talk Radio.'" That's a little bit of hyperbole right there, that is. There's plenty of real talk radio in those two hours. The worst commercial has to be the old guy who talks about this time he was so glad he had such and such brand of oil in his truck because once he had to idle for a couple hours. "As for Coast-to-Coast, don't get me wrong, it is the best show on Wmal. The host(s) don't take themselves too seriously, and after almost 20 hours of Wmal Obama bashing, listening to some nut case tell how he was abducted by aliens is quiet refreshing." Did Don have a falling out with the old D&M Team? I have been listening to and enjoying the Internet broadcast of Don Geronimo's show from the Big Sac. Today however I found myself a little curious about his relationship with his old team. The other day he did a segment rant about moving on and that he has moved on and is no longer part of the Don and Mike show. I understand, respect this and even believe it must be frustrating for him since he probably has a strong D&M following listening online. Today however, I questioned Don's response when a caller asked him about Buzz Burbank. Mike O'Meara's Podcast has been indicating that Buzz was extremely sick. I believe the caller was questioning the heath of Buzz and not busting balls. Don quickly dismissed the caller, played crickets and made a few comments. I would like to believe that if Don knew of the severity of Buzz's illness, he would have briefly mentioned it and wished him well. Either he did not know about Buzz which makes me question the relationship with the old D&M Team or he does but his response makes me ask the same question. I enjoy him now and on the D&M Show. Listening for years gives me the false sense of being part it and it bothers me if they are not as close as perceived on the show. TMOS mentioned Don's fall and wished him well. (12/14/10)

The funny thing about Wkileaks and Cablegate is that anyone stateside who has supported the foreign service knows two things: A) Foreign Service folks only care about what happens to them, while in the country they are posted to. Almost no one in the F/S sees their activities as an extension of US Foriegn Policy. We conduct our FP more through the Marines than we do through embassies. B) Most F/S spend as little time as possible stateside. They do not live here, they see being stateside as more of a harship than being in-country. The F/S crowd loudly disdain much of the culture in the CONUS and have no regard at all for how their activities in-country will impact the citizens who pay their tax-exempt and differentially compensated arse. The impact of these cables will be negligible to US interaction on the world stage. It may however greatly upset, at their posts, who gets invited to what in the future and who gets absolved of whatever naughtiness in the future. Many of the cables are personal and should never have been conducted in the manner they were in the first place. The F/S crowd got what their arrogance wrought. The Obama admin is taking a page from the Bush admin, using Foreign affairs to distract from where the focus should be, at home. What a Noble job Obama and the Clintons are doing. (12/14/10)

Re: " I was listening to Al Galdi's show on 'TEM this morning and what the guy said was "the Skins haven't been good since 1993..." Daniel Snyder took over in 1999. Why and how is that incorrect?" It is incorrect because you have misquoted what was said. Galdi said, more than once, that the Redskins weren't any good "the last DECADE that Jack Kent Cooke owned the team." The word was DECADE, which in most of the world means 10 years, not six. Nice try. In any case, anybody who thinks Daniel Snyder has kept up the quality at Redskin Park, let alone improved it, shouldn't be employed by a sportstalk station. There's talk, and then there's propaganda. (12/14/10)

I try to keep my posts sensible and relevant here at the Mailbag but I do admit sometimes my comments are fueled by too much coffee combined with medications. I attempt to be amusing and (usually) mean no harm or offense to most posters. I apologize if I truly hurt the feelings of people who aren't ridiculously overpaid or haven't helped ruin modern radio.Thank You Dave for your patience and for providing a great site where us loudmouths, and others, can express our opinions. Donnie aka tee hee (12/14/10)

You talking to me? OOBBEE (12/14/10)

The sports guys are already WTOP employees as of the first week of this month. We start doing the traffic Feb 1, but our traffic reporters are already here training and planning. (12/14/10)

Snippet:Hey Noobiekanoobie is your other name Chloe? LOL sorry I couldn't resist. I don't think ZoofieWomb likes being called out tee hee.-Hello "tee-hee". Our "little town crier Zombie Womb is feelin the "Zappa" itch. He/She/It don't like bein "outed". Noobiekanoobie and Chloe...Tee-hee! Layter.. (12/14/10)

Dave's response: It just seems to me that the same people who complain the loudest about the trashy quality of posts in this here Mailbag are the same people who post much of the trash. Hmmm.....

(While Dave Johnson is the king of local sports radio, having contractors doing the rest of your sports reeks of cheapness which ill suits both Bonneville and WTOP.) Unsigned Corporate Suit, try to keep up. All WTOP sports employees are WTOP employees. DCRTV reported that some time ago. (12/14/10)

Dave's response: Most WTOP sports reporters are currently employees of Metro Networks. However, come late January, after WTOP and Metro divorce, all WTOP sports reporters will be employees of WTOP. Not so with Metro's traffic reporters, like Lisa Baden. They'll remain employees of Metro, with "new" WTOP-employed traffic voices being heard on WTOP.....

Rather substantial decline predicted for "traditional radio" listening. Is it any wonder with how awful most music stations are these days??? From All Access: "FORRESTER RESEARCH's annual report on U.S. consumers' use of online media showed that for the first time in the company's research, the average consumer spends as much time online as with TV offline, and traditional, offline radio use declining 15% over the past five years as online media consumption continues to grow (121% over the five year period; TV use grew 5%, while newspapers and magazines showed steep declines)." (12/14/10)

Dear Dave: One of the posts yesterday for the "Best/Worst" was about the use of "Breaking News" when the story was anything but. Let me add an example. Last night just before 6:00 I'm getting the dinner table ready for the arrival of my wife and kids and had WTOP on in the background. Suddenly, I heard their breaking news sounder. I'm immediately started to anticipate news about Richard Holbrooke or a development about the tax compromise bill or even some significant development regarding the windy weather on traffic and/or the local power grid. What was the breaking news? That Brett Favre's consecutive games streak would be coming to an end. WTOP, you have got to be kidding. Who in the heck cares? Great site Dave! Sincerely, Joe Kasell (12/14/10)

ESPN 980 could not air the Baltimore-Houston game last night. The Westwood One feed that 980 would have carried was blacked out locally in favor of the Ravens' own broadcast on WFED. Everett W. (12/14/10)

Isn't Mr. Lucie's wife a reporter on channel 9? The one with the Betty Boop like voice. I see ESPN 980 did not run the radio broadcast of the MNF game this week. they'd been running it all season till now. Whats the purpose of the extra half hour of news on channel 7 on Saturday and Sunday nights. I think its called Saturday Extra and Sunday Weekly or something like that. Seems like its pretty much a repeat of the 11 pm news. Has any local sports reporter raised the question about McNabb's health? Is something wrong with his arm and thus all the poor throws. (12/14/10)

Wonder What AC 360 Will give out to the audience as "Favorites?" IPads, Wii's, Cruises? Probably not. Just, the entire DVD Collection of Larry King Interviews, plus some of him on the radio. (12/14/10)

Does anyone else remember Anderson doing overnights at ABC and playing tunes on his squeezebox in the middle of the night? (12/14/10)

I'm waiting for David Zurawik to write a column calling for a review of all of the stories David Nitkin has been involved in to determine whether any of those favored the democrats he now works for. So the Sun (on behalf of Nitkin) sues Ehrlich. Ehrlich wins. Gee. Wonder how much fairness Ehrlich got from the Sun after that? Thank you Dave Hughes for making the Sun, and Zurawik, what they so rightly deserve to be -- irrelevant. The Sun has finally set. But give credit to Nitkin for something. He lives in Howard County. I'm sure that must have pissed off his bosses who look down their noses at people who have the audacity to live outside the borders of the shell that Baltimore has become. (12/14/10)

Thank God WMAL’s Fred Grandy never heard about where you can end up if you crash and burn in radio, movies, and TV… -Unsigned Corporate Suit (12/13/10)

Interesting... I don't recall ever being Rickrolled in *text* form before. Not as funny now as it was before Rick Astley rolled himself during the 2009 Thanksgiving Day parade. (12/13/10)

I have to agree with the earlier poster who would like to see Coast to Coast back on WMAL until 5:00 A.M. Even though there is a lot of way out stuff it gives me a break from all the political stuff and bad news on the news station. (12/13/10)

Dave's response: Amen.....

Dave - It's so unlike one person to hear something and post it, incorrectly, in the mailbag. It's even more unlikely to have a 2nd not hear something and offer an opinion on it. Such is the game of telephone game the uninformed play. I was listening to Al Galdi's show on 'TEM this morning and what the guy said was "the Skins haven't been good since 1993..." Daniel Snyder took over in 1999. Why and how is that incorrect? How did that slander JKC? 3 playoff berths, pair of 10 win seasons - disappointing to say the least. Sounds like a fair assessment to me. (12/13/10)

Do you know what happened to Lou Holder being on the John Riggins Show? He hasn't been seen on the show for awhile now. He's now one of the recurring guest hosts on the Tony Kornheiser Show, which I'm sure prohibits him from being on a show on a different station. Was he fired or he quit? He didn't seem comfortable on the show, but I'm wondering if he had problems with either Tod Castleberry or Riggo. (12/13/10)

Hey Noobiekanoobie is your other name Chloe? LOL sorry I couldn't resist. I don't think ZoofieWomb likes being called out tee hee. (12/13/10)

"[T]he Midnight Tuck Show ... is wretched and its two hosts are extreme right wing nut cases who think they know something about politics, economics, and government and bully callers who dare to disagree with them. They don't know jack-shit! As a conservative Republican I consider them an embarrassment "to the cause. Why does Wmal even air this show from 3am to 5am? They use to broadcast Cost-to-Coast "live" from 1 am until 5 am. While that show is just dumb (unless you believe in UFO's), at least it is entertaining." I would respectfully disagree with you. Taking the second first, the majority of Coast to Coast episodes do not deal with UFOs. As to the Midnight Trucking Radio Show, I find that the hosts do indeed know what they're talking about and invariably treat their callers with respect, although they are not afraid to disagree with the callers and explain in a calm, logical manner, why they disagree. If you consider the trademark phrase "Tell me where I'm wrong" to be bullying, I would suggest you have never been bullied. What are you, "a conservative Republican" doing listening to these overnight shows anyway? Tell me where I'm wrong. - ZW (12/13/10)

People in the radio industry might never give up a nanosecond of thought to Wikileaks but they would definitely be interested in this 1998 cable: www.ding.net... This one tells no lies. Merry Xmas! (12/13/10)

I guess “Woffie” don’t wanna rassle- noobiekanoobie. TA-TA! (12/13/10)

Today, Anderson takes his audience shopping at Macy's! (12/13/10)

Today, Anderson talks to Crossdressing Serial Killers. (12/13/10)

Anderson's Favorite Things, anyone? (12/13/10)

After the comments this morning about the late Jack Kent Cooke, I think there should be a boycott of Red Zebra broadcasting. I know this means dropping the listening of Tony K and Redskins Radio(which I listen to online for the games on a weekly basis....sure beats FOX and the other networks for that I am damn certain) but it's long overdue. Anyone with common sense would know that we went to the playoffs 4 times and won the super bowl twice with Cooke as a owner in his last decade as a owner. This deal with revisionist history is nothing short of poor taste and acting like a five year old screaming it was a adult who did it! Synder and his minions need to GROW UP and wake the hell up. Dan (12/13/10)

Whether the Midnight Tuck Show is sponsored by auto parts or truck parts companies, the show is wretched and its two hosts are extreme right wing nut cases who think they know something about politics, economics, and government and bully callers who dare to disagree with them. They don't know jack-shit! As a conservative Republican I consider them an embarrassment "to the cause. Why does Wmal even air this show from 3am to 5am? The latest piece of Daniel Snyder-apologist propaganda being spewed by 94.3FM: The Redskins troubles didn't start with Snyder, "the Redskins really weren't very good the last 10 years that Jack Kent Cooke owned the team." This lie, repeated several times during the 9am hour today, completely ignores reality: during the last 10 seasons of Cooke's life (1987-96) the Redskins went to the playoffs four times and won two Superbowls. I know the clowns at WTEM (or whatever it's called) have to kiss Snyder's ass to stay on the air, but you'd think they'd at least try to be credible while doing it. (12/13/10)

A belated Happy Birthday wish goes out to my buddy and longtime Baltimore area radio veteran and "Mailbagger." The lovely "Sister" Joyce Conroy. Even though your B-Day was yesterday, I hope it was a festive one Hon. Much love, Rusty Gibson (12/13/10)

On this week's CBS News 60 Minutes broadcast, Lesley Stahl interviewed incoming Speaker of the House John Boehner, and traveled to his hometown in Ohio, met the whole Boehner clan, and even shared a few heartfelt moments with the congressman. [Notable Quotable - 12/13 - "If you crash and burn at a variety of careers, there's always radio."
