After reading that flaming lib article in the Post about coal mining I used mine to wipe my ass. (4/20/08) Kudos to Stephanie Drummond going to WBAL-11 from WIYY's "Irresponsible Radio," with Theo and Joe. That show makes the WZBA "The Bay" morning show sound good... (4/20/08) RE:THE FOOL who thinks GREASE is pathetic.. If you don't get it or can't understand it then turn the dial you douchebag. It's not rocket science it's radio for crying outloud!!! You're probably the same clown who took the time to call the show @ the 11 o'clock hour and ask GREASE what the point of the show was. If you were listening you obviously heard him say that there is NO POINT. The point is to ENJOY what you're hearing. Have a laugh while your doing whatever it is you do while listening to the radio. It's pretty simple DUMBASS!!!!!!!!!!!! (4/20/08) My apologies to WTOP. There was in fact a school with its roof torn off in the Hyattsville area of PG County. However in the first five minutes of their storm coverage after 6PM they only reported on the school with the shingles blown off in southern Md. (4/20/08) re: "Any chance O'Meara will be truthful when talking about his shows' ratings now? The airwaves are just a wee bit nicer now without the drama queen on the air.-Dave" Why don't you tell us Dave (not Hughes) if you know so much? Because I bet you don't. Tim (4/20/08) I can't believe no one else has sent this in, so better late than never. I checked out Chris Core's show on XM Potus on Friday in response to his huge ad on DCRTV and heard one of his guests say something incredibly anti-Semitic. I nearly drove off the road! In fact, after I heard it I did drive off the road and park and wrote it down. The guest -- some trucking company guy -- was talking about how to lower oil prices and said, "go after the Jews on Wall Street." And Core just let him go on and on and then said something like well let's not use that kind of language, then continued on with the interview for a few more minutes like nothing ever happened. I will be shocked if he's still on the air on Monday. He shouldn't be. Phil in Fairfax (4/20/08) Dave's response: I asked Chris about it and he sent the following response..... The guy did say it....although it took me a second and I had to double check with the producer to make sure I heard it right. The guy owns a trucking company in Pennsylvania and was ticked about the price of fuel. After my producer assured me she heard it to, when he finished his sentence I scolded him and said "I find no reason to bring up anybody's race, religion or ethnic background into this discussion, so unless we can make a deal right now that that will not happen again, I am going to have to end this conversation." He told me that was a deal... and behaved himself from that point forward. I am not even sure he was aware he had said it. Its the first time EVER I have had somebody make an anti-Semitic slur on the my show.. It was live radio without a delay button, so there was not much I could do about it except say what I said on air. It just shows that there are still in 2008 some deeply held prejudices in America, unfortunately. Either sensational or irresponsible reporting by WTOP. After their break for the 6:00 network news the tease included, "power failures and the roof of a school blown off". When they came back for the reading of the news we found out that "twenty shingles were blown off the roof" of Thomas Stone High School. That is plain sloppy reporting. (4/20/08) As a life-long resident of Northern Virginia who has been here since Howard started on DC/101, I found myself disappointed that before GeroniMO finally left the airwaves, he didn't tell both of his listeners the REAL reason the D&M show went to afternoons from the morning drive. Pity. Any chance O'Meara will be truthful when talking about his shows' ratings now? The airwaves are just a wee bit nicer now without the drama queen on the air.-Dave (4/20/08) Rev. Dr. Edward Bauman was a real professional. He was not a miracle worker . He was just a hard worker. He really enjoyed sharing his knowledge with other people. Unlike modern religous broadcaters, he had no interest in hate mongering. I'm sure he would be flattered to know how many heathens, jews, muslims and democrats watched his program. I looked forward as many did to watching his his program every Sunday. I would watch reruns today if they aired them somewhere. Maybe someone from the Church of the Foundry could find those tapes are try to get them on You Tube. (4/20/08) Dave, the Washington City Paper broke the story earlier today. This was the last episode of the Snack and Soda Show on WJFK. The reason given was lack of sponsorship. www.washingtoncitypaper.com (4/20/08) Dave's response: Is there anyone who still listens to JFK-FM on the weekends? It's pretty much "whore out" stuff and reruns..... Mrs. Gene Scott, Melissa, has a show seen in these parts on channel 50 around 1 am . She had been showing an hour of her late husband Dr. Gene followed by her preaching the next hour but that was cutback to just an hour of Melissa. To use a Don Geronimo phrase, Melissa just ain't thick enough. She does have a great head of hair. Meanwhile, Ernest Angley still ticking and can be seen on channel 20 Sundees late mornings. Pia the Steve Dahl fan did O'Meara give you one of them $30 bar b que grills that the sponsor provided for the Wellcome back to toothless fairfax event? Lots of WJFK minions in that crowd. And none of them thought about getting O'Meara a chair! (4/20/08) Dave's response: I'm told Mike has to stand or he loses circulation to his feet. Does Mike get $50 each time he mentions "Weber" grills on 106.7? Here's a copy of the e-mail that I sent. This could very well be a fun and worthwhile promotion for everyone. GE..... To: dave@dc101.com; heather@dc101.com..... Subject: Greaseman For President..... The photo of my classic bumpersticker has been posted in the Mailbag section of www.dcrtv.com . This could become a HUGE promotion for DC101 if executed the right way. Will you hear a bunch of crap from Elliott et al? Sure...so manufacture stickers for them as well and hold your own "presidential election" amongst the listeners based on stickers sold. Sell them for like $2 a piece with proceeds going to the specific jock's favorite charity. Have all of the "candidate's" stickers available for sale at any live broadcast and also online....everybody wins with this promotion! I can promise you that I won't let this idea go away quietly...it's too good for everyone who would like to be involved. Gary Edsall (4/20/08) Dave's response: I'm hearing that DC101 brought the Greaseman for Saturday mornings as "insurance" in case Elliot leaves the weekday morning shift..... How about an update on former Dc101'r Doniele Flynn ? (4/20/08) Dave's response: She's being held prisoner in Count Gore De Vol's dungeon..... “Other than me being foolish enough to tune in, is there anything more pathetic than listening to a 58 year-old washed-up "shock" jock talking about getting blown through a mail-box glory hole?" -- I think you should be honored that the Grease talked about you on the air. Ngah ngah ngah ngah!! Biff from Burke (4/20/08) To the DCRTV Mailbag contributor who met the local minister/broadcaster with the educational TV show, I believe you are remembering the Rev. Dr. Edward Bauman, former pastor of Foundry Methodist Church in DC. His programs aired weekly on Channel-7 and/or WMAL-AM 630 from 1958 until sometime in the 1990s. The TV program, originating from DC, was also seen on stations in over 40 cities at one time or another. (4/20/08) Here's a blast from the past (circa 1984). I dug up one of these out of storage and slapped it on my car today. Let's get DC101 to do a re-print of these and make Greaseman a write-in candidate! G.E. (4/20/08)Pretty sure I saw ex- Channel 7'er now CNN'er Carol Costello flashing guys for quarters in Central Park too. Thanks.... BB in MD (4/20/08) Too funny - On the home page of washingtoncitypaper.com there is a blog about you (DCRTV Dave), and right below of Peter Rosenberg. Too funny about you calling them out. hahahaha Anyway, with the evil Don Geronimo gone, maybe Peter could be friendly with the Mike O'Meara show? Just kidding, of course...lol. Here is the mention of Rosenberg: www.washingtoncitypaper.com. (4/20/08) Dave's response: Nothing against Phil Wood, who is a darn good sports talker, but to consider his show the very best of what's on DC radio? Kind of suspect, to me. Perhaps CP's Dave McKenna and Mr. Wood are hanging around a bit too much together? Hmmm. Here's what it says about moi at www.washingtoncitypaper.com: Sure, there’s no such thing as bad press in the era of the hit-counter. But damn if it don’t hurt to be mocked on a site as grand as DCRTV. “DC City Paper is out with its annual ‘best of’ issue. And it confirms that the weekly rag is pretty cluelessly brain dead about local TV and radio,” writes the heroic DCRTV Dave. Ouchie. DCRTV-D goes on to rail against our failure to cite local personalities such as “Elliot, Geronimo, the Junks, Cerphe, Russ Parr, Chris Core” etc… No defense here, DCRTV-D, though we have weighed in on your idol and sponsor Chris Core recently. Hope we don’t disappoint you so much next time around, DCRTV-D. And thanks for the hits. Dave's response: Even though Chris Core is a sponsor here on DCRTV, I have frequently criticized him. Particularly his personal testimonial ads on WMAL and his obvious "lefty in righty rags" persona on the radio. Chris did do something very courageous last year - he did a show on how the pharmaceutical industry, a big advertiser on his old station, is marketing unnecessary and expensive prescription drugs directly to consumers and driving up our health care costs. For that show, alone, Chris should have gotten CP's "best of" nod. Oh, I really like the "DCRTV-D" label..... Gotta join in the early praise for the Mike O’Meara show. I’m stunned at how LOOSE they all sound, but maybe I shouldn’t be. It’s not like they all got introduced last week. Much as I’m a fan of Donnie G., he’s been a man in pain since his personal tragedy, and it did show on the radio. Is anybody left on that show as funny as Donnie G at his best? Of course not. But there’s plenty of wit and talent in that group to make a good solid radio show, particularly now that a guy they ALL cared about is off taking care of himself. Everybody looking forward to “Donnie’s 70s Show” with Uncle Mel in a year or so? Sincerely, TMU. (4/20/08) “Other than me being foolish enough to tune in, is there anything more pathetic than listening to a 58 year-old washed-up "shock" jock talking about getting blown through a mail-box glory hole? No more Greaseman, please! It's pathetic for all involved.” Please speak for yourself, Sir (or Madame). If it is “pathetic” to you, I respect your right to express yourself but please don’t assume the Greaseman’s antics are pathetic to all simply because of such a stifling point of view. If my eyes had not been opened wide by many years of public service, had I not seen just how pathetic and sad human behavior and living conditions can get than perhaps I might have a narrower, more critical view of things, of humor in general. Instead, I prefer to laugh, love and lighten up. And, since when does an entertainer stop or adjust his or her material to the natural process of age? Seems to me they go on with the show until they either run out of energy or croak. The Greaseman show is witty, wacky and profoundly unique. I get it. It makes me laugh. If someone else does not like it, I respect that. They can tune out or maybe get behind a mike and try coming up with something profoundly unique of their own. Richard in Cambridge (4/20/08) "...That ain't cussin', that's definition!" www.youtube.com (4/20/08) I received the nicest promotional item in the Post today... a single sheet of Brawny paper towel (that's right; ONE SHEET) wrapped in a transparent plastic package. No doubt, they want to me to try and buy Brawny paper towels. So let's see ... one sheet of paper, excessive plastic packaging, all multiplied by the number of subscriber households; the gasoline it took for the Brawny to arrive at the Post's assembly facility, the gasoline it took to deliver my paper ... HAPPY EARTH DAY, EVERYBODY! (4/20/08) Dave's response: I got that too, and used it to wipe up some spilled vodka. Came in really handy..... "If CNN didn't make their employees do the jobs of three people, reporters like this guy wouldn't be in Central Park at 3:30 in the morning with Meth in his pocket" So was he doing a story on Meth or the joy of tying a rope between one's neck and genitals? The only thing that could have made this story better would have been if Larry King were somehow involved. (4/20/08) I went to Mike's picnic at WJFK and had a fun time. At the end of the night there was about 50 people there. I've also been to a Steve Dahl remote where the listeners were served a buffet including FREE lobster offered by a sponsor. We also got an authentic Dahl goody bag which had a Steve Dahl Back to the Beach t-shirt, a Dahl/station Frisbee and other stuff that I can't remember. We also had the chance to win prizes. I flew in to Chicago just for the live remote and I had a great time. Steve does a good job of making the listeners feel welcome. He makes himself accessible during commercial breaks and after the show. I hope WJFK keeps having picnics, but they need to step up to the plate and make people WANT to be there. A free tank of gas would be a great giveaway!--Pia the Steve Dahl fan (4/20/08) Don Geronimo enjoying his retirement flickr.com (4/20/08) Has Pamela Brown been replaced weekend mornings on Newschannel 8? Hadn't watched in a couple of weeks and new anchor seemed permanent. No mention of filling in. Ain't it just a bit curious that I'm Bram Weinstein leaves Redskin Radio and the Redskin Lunch show gets canned. Bring in Sam Huff to work with Larry. With the draft coming up seems like there's no lack of filler for the show. Pretty boy Larry Michael did say that the show would continue on tv only, on Comcast. Went by the O'Meara WJFK bar b que on Friday for about 30 minutes. Roughly 10 people showed up who weren't associated with WJFK. I had sense of ship has sailed to the event. The honchos at WJFK need to give O'Meara some breathing room and not shove so many commercials down the misteners throats. Albeit, surprising that they're able to sell so much commercial time on the O'Meara show. Passed by O'Meara's bar Saturday night after going to the antique car show out by the Manassas airport. Not so many cars yet but i guess it is early in the spring. Oh yeah, O'Meara's I'd say a smattering of imbibers. Had imbibed meself back in January and the place was packed but that was before hours cut back. Caught that Red Eye show on Faux News channel very very very late night Friday. They had a bit with many time Stern guest and porn star Savannah Samson reading the news. Porn stars are conservatives? Speaking of former Stern guests there a new local news anchor who reminds me of one. Seems like it was a contest in which a recently graduated high school kid wins date with a porn star named for city in Texas. Dern, I forgot about the Joe Ardinger show again. (4/20/08) "______Remember Dr. Gene Scott on Channel 20? _____" Who could forget him ? He would sit in his rocking chair, play the saxaphone, and sell satellite dishes. I never could figure out what he was trying to say, but I enjoyed the show. No hate mongering either. WDCA seemed to attract those shows. I once met a local minister who had a Sunday morning show on Channel 5. No service or church. It was all education. I met him once at a concert. I told him that I didn't agree with everything he said, but as a broadcaster I respected him very much. He said that meant a lot to him. I think it was the Church of the Foundry in DC. (4/20/08) /\ April 20 Messages /\ ![]() \/ April 19 Messages \/ I have really enjoyed reading the messages about the local media and local hate mongering by Christian groups. While I don't agree with all of them, I agree with the main point that when major market stations like WTOP, WAVA, and even WJZW air more commercials from Christian groups, evangelism seems to go up. I don't even answer the door any more because of all of the Christians who want to convert me. I miss the good old days of door to door salesmen. According to the door banging zealots, Judaism will send you to straight to hell. Never mind the fact that the US constitution gives me right to be a Jew. Today's Christian clearly puts the bible above the constitution. When Jerry Falwell was alive, he actually encouraged his law students to change our government by taking jobs where they had power. Many of them did, and one of them rounded up the names of heathen US attorneys so they could be fired. I remember seeing Falwell's rants on WDCA. What ever happened to love thy neighbor? But we didn't know that the Redskins Lunch show is going on "hiatus". The hour will be filled by Colin Cowherd's third hour which should have been on all along. This next part is just a hunch but I wonder if CSN's plus channel can co-exist at the same time as MASN2, since they both go to the same channel location on most cable systems. That would, in some sense, explain why CSN+ isn't an option for Monday, even with there being no need for MASN2 on that day. Steve in Lanham (4/19/08) Dave's response: At least on Comcast systems, somewhere at Comcast Central they send out a feed of C-SPAN2 occasionally interrupted with MASN games, as MASN2. RE: [ " 5 P.M. news on Baltimore's WMAR-TV2, X-MD, Gov Ehrlich was offered HUD Secretary job, but according to him he turned down " ]........ Gee, that's a no-brainer, any idiot would know a gig at WBAL radio is a safer bet! Who the hell wants to destroy the rest of their political career by being associated with W for the rest of their lives and worse yet, a LAME DUCK W??? DUH! Plus Ehrlich has approval ratings more the TWICE that of current Maryland Gov. O'Malley! But, you won't see that in print in The Sun, they're still embarrassed and eating crow about all their disastrous endorsements over the years and that comment that former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele offers nothing to the ticket but the color of his skin! I'm still to this day shocked that THAT editorial comment did not make national news! Could you imagine the outrage if The Post or The Sun made such a comment about Barack Obama or really ANY national black figure?!? Oh my god! The political storm would be hurricane force! By the way, does anyone know if there is any truth to the rumor that O'Malley is gay? ... And lets face it, the guy is just WAY too boyishly cute and impudent to be str8! You'll probably hear about this eventually when the political correctness police at The Sun and The Post finally run out of people to buy their dribble filled rags and phony anti-citizen endorsements that continually drive readers away to not only the internet and TV, but not EVEN their WEBSITES, no matter how hard they try. The internet age people are smarter, even the dumb ones and they just have too many ways to find out The Sun or The Post is wrong on this or that or outright lieing to them. It's gonna be a tough era for all of the BIG newspapers in the future. Only the ones that stay local and have strong local based websites will survive. The Sun and The Post ultimately will have to change or die. You would think the Sun or The Post would jump on this story that the former guv of Maryland has 2 times the approval rating of the current one, but DUH! They just don't get it or their agenda is wrong for the state. Take your pick. It doesn't really matter, the subscriptions continue to drop and the internet advertising dollars are not keeping pace. That means people are find their news ELSEWHERE and no longer trust CBS or The Post or The NY Times or The Sun. Is there really any other possiblity since all of these publications are losing money while other news sources are reaping in huge profits? DUH! (4/19/08) Yes, I was a huge fan of the "Don and Mike" show. But you know what..I'm an even bigger fan of the "Mike O'Meara" show. Why, you may ask? Mike's on-air interviews allow for listeners to call in and propose questions to the guest. For instance, the "argument" session with Tony Perkins had me in tears...I was laughing so hard and waiting for the next caller to pick their victim. Mike has allowed every guest, so far, to take questions/comments from the listeners, making the "Mike O'Meara" show not just about Mike, but his audience as well...it's about time someone included the listener in the guest segments. And thank God that Buzz has a major vocal presence on the show. Regardless of the fact that it's a talk show, the hourly Buzzcasts are very welcome and refreshing...it's nice to know what's happening in the world as it happens, not just condensed into a haphazard newscast starting at 6pm. Robbay, don't feel like I'm leaving you out. It's good that you have more presence as well. And who can't wait for Beth Ann "Hooters" McBride to get thrown into the mix? However, the best part is the interaction with the other WJFK personalities. How cool is it that members of "Big O & Dukes" and the "Junkies" do cross-promotion and appearances on the show and vice-versa? Has true, honest to God, old-school style radio returned to DC? I hope so. Viva the "Mike O'Meara Show" and the turnaround of cross-promotion of the WJFK shows. Sorry to Don Geronimo...I loved D&M and wish you the best of luck in whatever avenue you decide to persue, but your ego stopped you from doing the best of what the listeners truly want...being involved in a positive way. We may only reach 3/5ths of the DMA (3.5 million viewers) and we may air the unconventional, but to many many old-school analog viewers, 2nd tv's without cable/dbs, and new dtv set owners, we are a beacon of light in a dark sea of same-old-stuff programming. With millions of people worldwide reporting alien abduction experiences, unexplained craft, paranormal experiences, rebellion against the established doctornal faiths, the lack of new science reporting, and the hunger for ways to exercise their human potential, it is envitable that channel 49 would get noticed. Stay tuned for a whole new way of watching TV! Mike Gravino, Station Manager and Network GM (4/18/08) The following got forwarded to us. It's from the latest newsletter from former DC radioer Paul Harris, who now lives in St. Louis..... Earthquake! Just before 4:40am, I was awakened by a noise. The closet door was banging against its frame, and the handles on the dresser were clinking against the wood. In my sleepy condition, I didn't know what was going on, but surmised that some heavy truck was rolling by, or the wind was blowing so hard outside that it was shaking the house. I glanced out the window into the darkness and couldn't see a truck, but noticed that the trees weren't moving at all. What the hell? After a few seconds, everything returned to normal, and I fell back asleep. When I awoke for the day hours later, I learned that I had lived through an earthquake. The 5.2 temblor was centered in Belmont, Illinois, some 130 miles east of us, so we didn't take the brunt of it, but it's the first time I've felt my home shimmying on its foundation. We got a replay around 10:20am when an aftershock hit and I felt more of the same. Interestingly, my daughter's guinea pig didn't make a sound either time. You always hear how animals are so much more attuned to nature than we are, how they feel the beginnings of a natural disturbance like a quake before humans do. Maybe that's true of animals with four feet on the ground or the floor, but this one, in its cage atop a bookcase in my daughter's bedroom, didn't make a sound. Neither did my daughter, who was furious when she got up for school and learned she had slept through the quake. Most of the news media slept through it, too, so they're now playing catch-up. With no major damage to report, they have reporters doing live shots from university geology departments (with that very exciting video of a seismograph with the pen scratch from the shock wave that happened hours ago) or from buildings here and there that lost a couple of bricks or developed a slight crack in one wall. Fox 2 and NewsChannel 5 are both showing a loop from a few seconds of convenience store surveillance video that shows the place shaking a little bit and one bottle of Diet Coke toppling over. News 4 has a live shot from under the elevated Highway 40 section that most resembles the Bay Area highway that collapsed in their huge quake nearly two decades ago -- but there's no damage. They all have the usual cavalcade of earthquake experts and insurance professionals getting their few minutes of camera time, but every one of those outlets wishes they had footage like this (in Sensurround!): youtube.com... Unfortunately, even in the YouTube era, the only other contemporaneous footage is from a TV station in Evansville, Indiana, that was on the air at the time of the tremor: youtube.com ...Paul Harris (4/18/08) So it’s the end of the first week of the Mike O’Meara Show, and I have to say, one week ago tonight I was very saddened at the loss of my radio idol, Don Geronimo. But I must admit, the Mike O’Meara Show sounds more like Don and Mike than Don and Mike have in many, MANY years. At least the Don and Mike I grew up on and used to idolize as a teenager in the mid 90’s. Think about it—listen to today’s last few breaks up against a show from ’94 or ’95. Outside interaction, optimism instead of cynicism, more active guests, more Buzz newscasts and relevant comment. I’m sure Robb reads this (and when he does), I would take a guess and say that Robb will have a lot to do with making this show more like what it used to be. (And IF Robb really does read this, he should keep in touch with a brother from Errrrrford and answer the DC Country Station’s PM Drive Guy’s phone calls.) I will forever miss Geronimo, but if this keeps up—I will likely be tuning in much more than I have in recent years, even from afar. CSN will have post games for both teams on a special sportsnite starting at 3pm-7pm. Meanwhile the Orioles host the Yankees on MASN-HD all three games with Saturday and Sunday also on WJZ .. So three local teams will be in HD this weekend while the Nationals will play the Marlins in the non HD game. Remember all MASN - HD games can be seen on Comcast Ch. 226 MOJO... www.examiner.com... (4/18/08) Comcast doesn't exclusively carry ESPN, Versus, and the Golf Channel on its sports tier. All of those channels are on basic cable as well as digital packages. Hence the crux of the complaint by the NFL. (4/18/08) Dave's response: Comcast carries ESPN, Versus, and the Golf Channel on expanded basic, not basic. And on its HD digital package. But not as part of its digital sports package, where it carries NFL Net..... I heard Rush say today on WMAL that he's doing his annual fundraiser for cancer research, and that he's pledging $400,000 of his own money. He's hoping to raise about $15 million during the show, I thought I heard him say. What a hate monger. RE: [ " Some Anne Arundelers or Columbiaites who work in the DC area may listen to 106.7 while at work or commuting to and from " ]..... You cannot receive WJFK 106.7 in Columbia or most of Anne Arundel County to my knowledge. I start losing it just outside the Capital Beltway heading towards Baltimore. And when I travel to OC, WJFK is only listenable without static atop the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. And its very possible some of those people have jumped. :-) (4/18/08) WRNR webpage now featuring promo of Ms. Danner....This is unbelievable !
Carl,
Pasadena Md (4/18/08)I'm sorry, WWTD is DC City Paper's 'best local TV channel'? I can only assume the paper's staff must have taken the gateway from pot to crack. I'd never even heard pf WWTD, nor the network it's tied to, WUFO-TV (I swear I'm not making any of this up). According to the WUFO website, the network shows nothing but programs about UFOs, the occult and government conspiracies with the occasional sci-fi movie thrown in for yuks. Kind of a UHF Weekly World News. By the way, according to the Urban Dictionary, WWTD actually stands for What Would Tyra Do -- as in the very credible Tyra Banks. Good day. (4/18/08) Dave's response: I mean, how can you do a "best of" DC radio and not mention Elliot, Geronimo, the Junks, Cerphe, Russ Parr, Chris Core, WTOP, Joe Madison, Fred Grandy, and Donnie Simpson. Sheesh..... ("We'll see how much Comcast SportsNet truly values the Washington Capitals this Monday if/when a Capitals game six telecast collides with a Wizards game two.") One game would be on Comcast SportsNet, the other would be on Comcast SportsNet Plus. This has happened many times throughout the season. (4/18/08)

Carl, Pasadena, Md (4/18/08) Did you notice that the Pope timed his visit with the first week of Don's absence from the D&M show? He was able to sneak in and out of DC, and no one noticed. Let's have a nationwide TV reality search for the new CBS anchor - - kinda like American Idol, or Hell's Kitchen. The contestants could be sent to Iraq, host a presidential debate, or appear on the view. There should also be a swimsuit competition for no apparent reason, and they should be asked a really stupid question for the judges and the home audience to rank. I have to agree that Evening News on all networks has become irrelevant. CBS should really be the first network to try something new. Something new like Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos hosting a "National Inquirerer" debate. They really sucked. I used to like Charlie. Pressure to lower the debate to the, "...is Ashley Simpson pregnant" level proves that Network News has died. (along with the news demo) On a happier topic, after paying for a good e-mail address for many years, I find that Google's G-mail is free, faster, and easier to use. Try it, it's great. My new address is edgraham1@gmail.com. Ed Graham (4/18/08) Speaking of NPR voices, I was in San Francisco recently, and it sounds to me like Brian Naylor is the voice on all the announcements on the Muni buses there, as in "When exiting, please use the rear door!" Anyone know if that's true?-- Carl in Olney (4/18/08) With Vikkie Burns heading to NBC in New York, it was amazing to see the talent she cut over the paste year at the dinner the other night. Great to see Arch, but did you get a load of PEPCO talking heads Debi Jarvis and Clay Anderson? Are they has-beens already? DCRTV needs to do a "where are they now" summary. NBC4 before & after. (4/18/08) What's to train? For example. The NPR "voice" that reads the commercials is actually the same robot that does the NOAA radio broadcasts from the National Weather Service. They just dial in "Inskeep" or "Montagne" and type in the script. Out comes the voice. Oh, and doncha know, the reason they had to get rid of Bawb Edwards is that he mumbled too much and the computer couldn't synthesize it. (4/18/08) Has FOX5 totally done away with their "sports segment" on their news broadcasts? I know that Dave Feldman, Diane Roberts and Lou Holder (the last two who have since left) all used to report the sports during the evening and night broadcasts, but I can't remember the last time I saw a sports report being done by a sports anchor. It seems like Dave Feldman only does remote reports these days. And those are so far and inbetween. So what's up?..I am glad though that FOX5 has stopped bringing the kids on to do the weather on Fridays. When Tom Sater left and Tony Perkins started doing it, it just seemed really awkward for him and the segment just fell flat. (4/18/08) Dave, your opinion. Why do you think local TV and radio news is so superficial? - WJ (4/18/08) Dave's response: It's not just local TV news, all TV news is superficial. I think it has something to do with the 200+ channels now available on cable TV. If TV news can't "catch you" with something sexy, scary, and/or lurid, you'll be clicking elsewhere real quick..... I'm obviously missing something because I can't understand why FOX5 is making such a big deal about the earthquake that occured in the midwest this morning. (4/18/08) Dave's response: It's "Shake And Bake" news - if it shakes, they bake it into the newscast..... To the person who posted that it doesn't matter who will take over the anchor chair once Katie says goodbye because chances are CBS will always remain third in the ratings. It doesn't matter who is in the anchor chair at ANY of the traditional networks. Traditional media increasingly are becoming an anachronism. In a 24-7 news cycle which requires constant updating of information through venues like the Internet, a nightly news anchor is marginally relevant - and hardly worth the $$ being devoted to the position. Those resources, from a business point of view, would be much better spent in training people to use new technology. The media companies which will survive in the next 10-15 years will be those which adapt to deliver news, information and entertainment through new media. (4/18/08) Wow a week already of no donnie G. forever. The tears on my pillow bespeak the pains in me heart! Richard Harrington and Marc Fisher leaving WaPo, a paper I find in decline just got worse. I notice than that the other dj's on True Oldies 105.9 don't play the '60's oldies as when Michael Scott Shannon is dj'ing. 105.9 sounds just like WBIG when it ain't Shannon hosting affairs. Like The Globe sounds like Mix 107.3 for the most part. yawnie So who came up with this stuff for the O'Meara show? It's the friendly O'Meara show without agenda which he keeps saying . yawnie Can't Captain Ahab call in with a bit once in awhile, please? (4/18/08) Who does WMAL think they're kidding? Austin Hill's a fair fill in host but PLEASE don't try to make us think you're local. I was one of the 6 people listening to him tonight when he said "I was in a sports bar just outside the District"...like 2000+ miles outside the District. I listened to him when I was in Phoenix and he did a show with G. Gordon Liddy's kid. Phoenix isn't "just outside the District". End of rant (4/18/08) Priceless. Michael Tunison got fired for being a douche at a video store (the defunct Purple Potamus Video) and now gets fired from the Post. What a fruitcake. Nice one, Tunafish! (4/18/08) Dave, have you ever noticed the programming on broadcast channel 49? It's all UFOs, science fiction, and flimflam all the time. Capitals Hockey on WJFK and Jerry Klein on WMAL are the reasons why I turn the radio off for a few hours and pick up the paper and I read the latest garbage... and the killings and... it's no wonder that I have not become... a recluse. I cannot live in that world anymore, and the reason I think I gave you earlier is that my old world view... my paradigm... collapsed around my knees twenty years ago. Now, if weeks of listening to Jim Rome turned me into a cynical recluse, what will Capitals Hockey on WJFK do to the masses of people out there... that are going about their tiddly-ass little business... their little lives... going bowling... going to NASCAR races... drinking their beer... chomping their chips... and thinking that this is, "this is a good life" when you and I know that's not so. It's too late to order a roomful of Easter lilies for a certain AM radio "pet liberal" but I'm going to be sure to place my poinsettia orders early to avoid the rush. Ahh, the trauma of the poinsettia... the potted plant outside every door in your apartment building. When that... when that happens to you, it makes such an imprint on you, that you don't need to be hypnotically regressed to remember. I mean, it's there. It's like a scar - it's there. Caller X (4/18/08) Dave's response: We have reported about Channel 49's "other worldly" programming, but I don't watch it much since its signal ain't very strong here in Wild West Fairfax and it ain't on the cable..... Reading the comments on here and other sites as the whom could/should be taking over the anchor chair at CBS News once Katie says goodbye, to me it doesn't matter because chances are CBS will always remain third in the ratings unless CBS does something totally different. If CBS were smart they should team up with MTV and do an Entertainment Tonight/TMZ stye newscast with current non-entertainment news mixed in such as the upcoming Presidental election, kinda like what MTV did ( or they may still do but I haven't watched MTV in awhile). Why? To attract those viewers under 35 and having a 60 year old anchor wont be able to do that. Heck TV programming in other areas is doing that ( look at TV Land? Spike TV? TBS? ) all of them would rather reach that 25 year old viewer than say one who is 45. Even many local TV stations are going down thatroad as well. For example I can think of three local TV stations in Virginia who will no longer cover funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq UNLESS Shriley Phelps shows up to do her thing at those funerals. Why? Well the younger adults they want to see Shriley even if they don't agree with her. If a news director had the choice of airing a story about a woman running in a marathon to raise money for her sick child or a woman who won tickets to this year Indianapolis 500 race only to tear up her tickets because the city of Indianapolis now allows businesses to offer same-sex domestic partnership benefits, which story would get more young adults interested in watching? The Indy 500 ticket story !!! Young adults will go like "OMG", rush to My Space, You Tube or whatever and type in their comments and perhaps mention where they heard that and of course that will make any TV News director happy. And besides we live in a time when sadly more people care about who won American Idol or Britney Spears' health than they do gas prices, the economy or even their own lives. If CBS would team up with MTV or even on their own getting some 20 something year old anchor doing the news from Las Vegas rather than Washington or New York ( Vegas is the top city right now for those under 40 it seems ) , they might top ABC or NBC in the evening news race. Gotta reach those viewers under 35 to survive nowadays. (4/18/08) If the caps do reach a game 6, CSN should broadcast the caps game and put the wizards on NEWSCHANNEL 8. This Caps team has caught the region's attention in a big way, it has almost become trendy to become a Caps fan. Putting aside the increase in local media coverage and the ratings, there is anecdotal evidence. I've gone into bars recently where I usually have to ask them to put the Caps on one of the tvs and been surprised to see multiple tvs with the game on and people three or four deep at the bar watching. Whatever happens this season, the youth of the team ensures that that the team will just continue to get better. As a result, the casual sports fans and the mainstream local media in the area will continue to pay attention. I was particularly surprised at the relatively big Baltimore ratings and I expect the Caps are thrilled because they have been making a special effort to market the team to Baltimore fans. It's all good because Leonsis is by far the best sports team owner in town and deserves the success. Williams was also right about COMCAST SportsNet. They have terrific Caps coverage. It was the ratings for November 13th, 2005!! I knew something was wrong when I seen "E-Ring" and "Joey" on there. I know the Post messes the radio listings up, but this is sad. Rock on, Tybois Uphold (4/17/08) Dave's response: We did do a blurb yesterday, and the Post did run a correction today. So, how does something like that happen in the first place? Sheesh..... Katie Couric. Such a shame. But what worked well on "Today," doesn't work at all on "The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite." Corporate management at CBS went after a known-quantity celebrity instead of somebody the public trusts to deliver The News. I imagine the execs believed the industry and audience has moved beyond the idea that the evening news should deliver what it has always delivered: a snapshot of the day's events as seen through that network's special lens. The idea is that CNN is on air all the time delivering the news in realtime. So who needs a recap at 6:30 or 7:00 p.m.? Well, many of us do. And we sure don't want up close and personal interviews or coffee klatch chat at that hour. Bob Schieffer did an excellent job and would make an excellent replacement for Couric if he were 20 or 30 years younger. What this proves is that throwing money at a problem does not necessarily produce the best solution. (4/17/08) My favorite memory of Jerry Klein is from a couple Christmases ago, when he, being parsimonious, with show prep, decided to spend his entire Sunday evening show on a rant about how someone in his apartment building left a poinsettia outside each apartment's door. Jerry's reasoning was that the poinsettia was a deeply Christian symbol in Mexico so this unknown person was shoving their religion down his throat. Opie and Anthony could take a few lessons in cringe radio from that ill-considered hate-fest. Caller X (4/17/08) I'm guessing that Katie's days at CBS are numbered. I would have to say that she did quite well when she was over at NBC's Today Show for 15 years, and had a lot of loyal viewers there. Since her move to CBS in 2006, it turns out that she wasn't able to pull CBS' Evening News out of 3rd place. I don't know about the rest of you. I believe Les Moonves and Sean McManus are partly (or mostly) to blame for CBS' mess... as they'd perfer to blame Dan Rather, and Katie Couric for the news division's poor morale, and bad news programs. Scapegoating them for everything that went completely awry. Should Katie leave CBS in early 2009... I'm predicting she may be eyeing CNN. At the same time, it's rumored that the cable network may be wooing her. We're looking at a long list of possible replacement anchors for CBS' Evening News. Below are several names I can think of. Female anchors... Diane Sawyer and Paula Zahn. It's reported that Sawyer's contract with ABC is up in 2009. As for CBS being interested in luring her away from ABC, and/or the Good Morning America co-anchor jumping ship... it's anybody's guess. Not exactly sure if Paula Zahn would be interested in returing to her CBS roots, after leaving CNN in 2007... before her move to CNN in 1997, she wasn't able to pull CBS This Morning out of 3rd place. Male anchors... Anderson Cooper, Bryant Gumbel, Scott Pelley, and Harry Smith. I'm not qute sure if Cooper would be intereted in leaving CNN. Both Gumbel and Smith weren't able to pull CBS Early Show out of 3rd place. Pelley seems like he might be an interesting pick... it's rumored that CBS isn't interested in an in-house replacement. Just my thoughts. (4/17/08) re: "Yeah, you are right DA ...I had forgotten Don had worked out a special accent and impersonation of each Pope, and never factored that his bad Guido Sarducci wouldn't cover the Ratzman." Idaho's Oldies Station." Impact Radio general manager Randy Hyatt commented, "Last year, we brought the oldies format back to Boise on 100.7 and saw solid growth in the fall book. However, we felt the 'True Oldies Channel' and the terrific product that Scott Shannon and his team at ABC Radio Networks deliver, will brand us better in this highly competitive market." KQLZ will continue to feature the local “Big Jack & Bryan” morning show as well as a local afternoon show. "Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel" will air in all other dayparts and weekends. " So-the question to ask here-does any station that air this syndicated programming show strong numbers? To me, if I were the PD of KQLZ and we were stong--I would not go to a network!!!! (4/16/08) This is a good time -- now that Steve Doocey's son has asked a too-clever-by-half question of a Presidential candidate -- to reminisce about the fact that the person who asked then-candidate Bill Clinton whether he wore boxers or briefs was the daughter of NBC Dateline reporter Lea Thompson, a student at, I believe, Winston Churchill HS at the time. Don's impression was of JP2, not of Pope Ratzenberger - Mike has had those duties covered.//// Yeah, you are right DA. Don wouldn't have pulled out his weak Don Novello impression with the new Pope in town, but would simply let Mike handle all the duties. I do so clearly remember the finely tuned and heavily accented English with the Polish overtones of JP2 which he had so cleverly worked on and perfected over the years. My bad, I had forgotten Don had worked out a special accent and impersonation of each Pope, and never factored that his bad Guido Sarducci wouldn't cover the Ratzman. (4/16/08) While it is just the first week and I will certainly continue to listen to Mike's new show, if it wasn't clear before, it certainly is now. Don was the anchor, driver, and leader of the show. It wasn't a gimmick when the beginning of the show would open with, "I'm your leader, Donald P. Geronimo." So far, Mike's show has been solid. But I am tainted from 10 years of listening to the best radio show and everything else is a step down. Tim, Gaithersburg (4/16/08) re: "What a crime ! But really, there have to be better photos of Katie. Like perhaps this one www.magneticmediafed.com. (4/16/08) Dave's response: I like Katie. Always have. What I don't like is how the media "blanket covers" her like a entertainment celebrity. The "shower door" pic is my (too?) subliminal way of being critical of that silly "soap opera" treatment. Oh, nevermind..... Ed Rodriguez it's finally out, you've had this thing for Ed Graham for over 20 years! I happened to watch “Hardball” last night. Aside from Peter Doocy’s ridiculous question of Senator McCain, I was most shocked by Chris Matthews’ manipulation of the Senator’s time. The premise of these “College Tour” specials is to give the students in attendance the opportunity to question the Presidential candidates. So how many questions were the audience members allowed? Four. The remainder of the hour-long program was consumed with Matthews’ self-important blatherings. Good grief. (4/16/08) Hey, everyone - Even with the Pope in town, Georgetown has flow. First off, why the continued focus on priests and abuse, when we let female teachers abuse children and violate their probation without consequence? Nice double standard. Second, WAVA is a commercial Christian, aka Protestant, station. The McLean Bible Church is run by a rabbi (I think that makes him Jewish) who converted to Christianity, and he runs a very ecumenical church where everyone is welcome regardless of creed. I am not sure what hate speech you have ever heard in Pastor Solomon's little 'not a sermon, just a thought' audio. On the other hand, I dont recall ever hearing any content on either WAVA or WTOP from any Vatican office. Neither station has any influence from the Roman, or any of the other six Catholic churchs. Christian and Catholic are not same thing, but nice try. Take your hatred somewhere else, such as the Baptist or Methodist conferences. Your rant confirms what many Catholics already know and why, in the face of such unjustified and redirected hatred, it is important for the Pope to visit and show why he fears not walking among those who would persecute his flock. As for the parking situation and the Coptic priest...are you referring to the Russian Orthodox church off Shepard and 16th in NW DC? You know, where there is almost no parking, and neighbors park in the church driveway and the good pastor frets that he is powerless to stop it. (4/16/08) BET's Johnson is proof that education and ignorance can coexist in a free society. Words more or less to that extent, in referring to someone else, were once uttered by William F. Buckley. The point is, this same jackass who thinks Obama is winning on race alone (ie, he is getting the black vote but let us ignore his white supporters) had also declined to engage in the efforts of other broadcasters who sought to reduce profanity and misogynist concepts in rap music. IIRC his comment at the time was that such was part of the black culture and to change it was another example of white interference in the black community. The guy is a rich nutcase. He should be ignored, but the media loves a bore. (4/16/08) Thanks, Ed - - but being a "little prettier" than Bicknell is like smelling a little better than durian. (the fruit, not the really good morning guy) Ed Graham (4/16/08) "Now that the local talk hosts and their listeners (especially the asshole who replaced CC) have become bored with attacking Moslems and Hispanics, they've turned to the Jews"... Gee Dave, does this person have a mind problem too? (Dave's response: I'm going to leave it up as a telling example of "Don't Let This Happen To Your Mind.") (4/16/08) Dave's response: If a post is personally hurtful or untrue, I will usually pull it if requested to do so. But if one's just plain stupid, I'll leave it up as an example of what people are really thinking..... Without Don Geronimo it's over. O'meara is a great talent, but without Geronimo the chemistry will never be the same. Nothing against O'meara, but without Geronimo, it just isn't the same. Don't tell me to wait a couple of months for the show to start working. You either have it or you do not. And stop bashing Geronimo. He is and was the D&M show. You're going to hate on him because of his personality? Get a life -- he is an entertainer and he entertained your ass for decades. And by the way, moving a couple of producers in front of the microphone to help O'meara and having more news stories is like riding with traffic & weather on the 8's on WTOP while grabbing your crotch..it's so edgy and provocative. As written in the Wash Post, (not the best transition), but the quote speaks for itself --"Must be the traffic. Or the weather. Or the traffic and weather together. Whatever the reason, at the moment, all-news WTOP is the Washington area's hottest radio station," Paul Farhi said. Time to go back to Howard. In Stern I trust and can't go wrong. I'll pay 13 cents a day for quality entertainment programming. Love ya & will miss ya, Don & Mike, R.I.P. 2008 (4/16/08) Has anyone noticed that WMAL more and more is becoming "Bigot Radio?" Now that the local talk hosts and their listeners (especially the asshole who replaced CC) have become bored with attacking Moslems and Hispanics, they've turned to the Jews. This morning, while the subject was attacking the Montgomery County "liberals" who oppose religion because the County changed its mind about "honoring" the Pope's visit by electronic greeting on the RideOn buses, a caller said he found out that Montgomery County had the largest Jewish population in the area so he "knew" the problem. Of course, the asshole didn't disagree or even challenge him. So the question is who is next? Blacks? Asians? Protestants? Hindus? Buddhists? (4/16/08) Enjoyed the conversation with Beth Ann on the O'Meara show yesterday afternoon. But lemme ask you something. O'Meara didn't know that Beth Ann was from the Triad area of N.C.? Or that she was going through rough times after losing her radio gig?. Shirley, Mr. Mike is not so self involved that he doesn't pay attention to the lives of co-workers, past and present? As I don(get it) my radio consultant hat I'd have Buzzito do less news and have him reveal more of his personality and views on life on the O'Meara show, I think Donnie G. was alluding to that last Fridee.. Buzzie is a witty guy. They also need to work out a way for O'Meara to do his voices in a less awkward way. Me I go for Buzzie over Robbay to play the semi straight man to O'Meara bits. Maybe Beth Ann, being a real estate sales person, could handle the sale of the old guy on the show. Oooops, one problem, WLXE AM 1600 is only a 1000 watt non-directional station daytime and only 500 watts nighttime directional. Why on earth would the FCC let them operate at a HIGHER power while on Special Temporary Authority??? I knew the FCC had lost their minds regarding all of these ridiculous STA approvals and extensions, but is it really THAT BAD? In a related story, the owner of the AM 1600 in Dover Delaware got approval to operate MORE stations even though AM 1600 has not had transmitting facilities at all or up to spec for almost TEN YEARS (i.e. recklass misuse of the public's airwaves)! If you think the FAA is asleep at the switch with Southwest airplanes, guess what? THE FCC IS JUST AS BAD! The only reason it's not a story is because the industry does not bite the hand that feeds it and the general thinking is that nobody is in danger of getting hurt. It's only the public's airwaves they're F'ing up right? No big deal. Who frikkin cares? [that's sarcasm] (4/15/08) wjfk is a joke, they couldn't fix this internet problem last week before mike's show would start, i have to listen from the sacamento station. Great job guys, and is mike's show coming back to baltimore? (4/15/08) WLXE has been running on a Special Temporary Authority of 1250 watts non-directional at night due to "severe damage" to the nighttime array caused by "construction equipment" in January, 2007. In the request for an extension of the STA, the owners cited "protracted negotiations with the land owner" for the delay in restoring the nighttime array. I guess Multicultural finally worked things out and is working to replace whatever was damaged. Regards, Dave Loudin (4/15/08) Yes, the WJFK stream is down. While I was in my car today Chad DukeS said that CBS was going to do some work on the stream today and they knew about it. My only question is: why would they work on the stream when THAT is the time everyone is listening in their offices? I doubt they have a HUGE audience for the station at night. I just don't GET it! (4/15/08) Some of you are so pathetic. You are actually telling Mike O'Meara how to run his show. Seems to me he has been doing this for years, he makes the big money. he is the talent. HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. Stop being a sideline coach from your sofa. Mike will be fine. the cheapo's over at wjfk would not take a risk unless Risk Management has approved it. Finally Don was not suppose to retire this early, hence why they had no real time to get the shows bugs ironed out. You go Mike!!!!!! Patricia Lenahan (4/15/08) After several days of bandwidth problems crippling online listening, the mighty WJFK-FM web site....isn't working at all. Some "superstation." By the way, I have to laugh each time a self-appointed expert declares that what D&M, one of the region's most popular radio programs for nearly a quarter of a century, REALLY needed was to lose the star and workhorse of the show. Kind of along the lines of "It's a nice enough song, but could we get Sinatra to stop singing it?" Shaddup already. Dave in Sterling (4/15/08) Dave's response: I hear that JFK's had some server problems with the stream. It should be back up and running soon, I'm told..... As far as I know, Chris and Kathleen still live in Chevy Chase, MD, not Alexandria, VA. There are at least four women with the same name in Alexandria, VA. I personally know one who is heavily associated with an alumnae organization of an Ivy League women's college. When making phone calls for her alumnae job, most people she talks with for the first time get very confused. (4/15/08) After turning away from the D&M show about 5 years ago due to its staleness, I heard Mike on with the Junkies on Monday morning and I tuned in to his first solo show. It sounded as if he, Rob, and Buzz had an albatross lifted from their collective shoulders. No more dopey sound effect to “announce” each phone call. No more apologizing for being a hockey fan. (And a nice interview with Craig Laughlin.) No more treating every caller like he/she is a total dimwit. No more acting as if the rest of the WJFK on-air staff didn’t exist. No more constant interrupting of Buzz’s news for painfully forced humor. And, at least during the time I listened, not one imitation of Larry King. I won’t jump to conclusions based on one show, but I was pleasantly surprised by the first show. Having Beth Ann come on next week will add to the enthusiasm, I’m sure. The D&M show needed a kick in the ass and apparently Don’s departure was the foot. (Apologies to Dean Wormer for abusing his original quote.) (4/15/08) RE: "...Buzz finally got to do his newscast without Mr. Me-me-me Geronimo butting in all the time. Once in a while it was funny but he would literally ignore Buzz and continue to harp on some inane subject." Why would he want to be rude to a waitress, especially in front of bureau chief and boss, Tim Russert? No class and probably no ratings on MSNBC. He deserves to go to CBS! (4/15/08) I agree with a previous writer....the last hour of the Mike O'Meara Show was great! Buzz finally got to do his newscast without Mr. Me-me-me Geronimo butting in all the time. Once in a while it was funny but he would literally ignore Buzz and continue to harp on some inane subject. It often made me turn to another station and not go back. Mike handled it well and used his voice impersonations to great effect. There are still some bugs to work out but it looks like a winner. I hope the station will let Mike do a few shows from his restaurant in Manassas. (4/15/08) The Mike O'Meara show will fly, but the final element's not in place yet -- Beth McBride. Yes, her Rolodex full of D-list celebs was a hindrance, but NOW she's got a new role -- the Nice Mom, keeping her family of miscreants on the righteous path when they get naughty, as they will. (4/15/08) Yes in all fairness, it will take a couple of months for the show to come together. However if I was a betting man, this will likely turn out to be a bust. O’Meara doesn’t impress me as someone with a lot of drive or energy. I’m no big fan of Don’s but you have to admit, he put his heart & soul into the show during its prime. I’d be surprised if O’Meara has the resolve to make a long term go of it. (4/15/08) I agree that the "new" lineup at WHFS is competition for the lineups at WCBM and WBAL. It's already better than CBM's as of day one. The problem is that I didn't think they were supposed to be competition for those tired old stations. They were supposed to be something new and fresh. Recycling Brian Wilson-who I'm pretty sure is a bit older than Mike O'Meara, BTW-a DJ who I'm pretty sure has already been employed at both those other old guy radio stations is really the way to grab that 25 year old audience...NOT. The Norris show is fine, but the addition of Wilson makes WHFS just another cranky old guy station. Unfortunately, a portion of that audience still can't find the FM dial. WBAL's new lineup is actually more interesting than WHFS with Wilson in the middle. Bring back O'Meara or develop something fresh of your own, 'HFS! Howie (4/15/08) Dave, You have to admit the last hour of Mikes show was great during Buzz’s news When the door opens with one of Mike’s impressions the real quick one liners. (4/15/08) Well, it appears that someone had a Diane Roberts sighting, but what about Allison Oakley?..I sure hope she hasn't left as well..Maybe she's just on vacation. Sure hope so. (4/15/08) hey Dave---as you yourself said "it was just the first show" so of course it will need time to develop. It is funny how some in the "bag are already bailing on MIke...but what would you have Mike do ? or Buzz or Robb or even Beth Ann? THEY want to continue working...so why should their fates be tied to the whims and fancies of of the dark lord Don.?? in fact...let's geek this thing up even further and continue with the Lord of the Rings analogy. Don was like a great dark presence (the eye of Sauron) fuming and agitating and scheming and angry and wanting something so bad --but unable to get it So, once that oppressive feel of the Don and MIke show was lifted...OF COURSE there would be some immediate good feelings...the sun has broken through ! the show comes back to Fairfax--MIke goes out celebrating with some of the Junkies and (dare we think it) even talks and interacts with some of the other JFK staffers and shows. Let us always remember the great dark lord Don....but it is a new time ..come on baggers (and Dave) understand that it will never be Don and Mike again...long live the heir to the kingdom MIKE......sorry for the geekiness --but it did seem much "lighter" on Monday . Be patient and be fair.... (4/15/08) The Mike O'Meara show certainly will be a "kinder and gentler" version, even if it does contain elements of the old Don & Mike show. It has been interesting to note that 5 seconds after Don's retirement they are personally plugging the "new" show on the other WJFK shows, and without a murmur moved back to the studio in Fairfax, which is closer to where they all live. Makes one wonder about the original impetus to broadcast from Rockville and what or who caused the strained silence with other WJFK talent ? I think we know the answer. Will the remaining actors from the old show, who have essentially been second bananas provide enough pace and verve to keep the show from slowing down to snail's pace is anyone's guess. Anyone remember the TV show Aftermash ? At least the guests and callers will have a little more time to state their case, without continuous interruption from the former head dick in charge. That might be refreshing. //// Even those who love to hate were probably looking for a Kleenex during Geronimo's teary farewell. While it seemed odd that a guy with no previous inclination to do so, invoked God's name so many times during his explanation and mea culpa as to why he couldn't trudge on. I was pleased that he thanked the listeners profusely, while none of us would wish a tragedy such as he has suffered on anyone, continuous good ratings and his fat paycheck have allowed him to check out and "retire" early. As he stated, we all have to deal with death at some point or another, but thankfully we don't have to go back on a stage and be a dancing monkey for millions, err..thousands. That's a tough gig, especially when your wife was an integral part of the show. I wrote in this very forum, before he was slated to come back after his wife's death, that he should take a year off. He acknowledged as much in his farewell, stating that his early return was a mistake. In my book, Geronimo: great disc jockey, great on-air chemistry with Mike and the others, but sadly became a bitter and angry man, starting with their failure to become a big-time national radio show and exacerbated by his wife's death. They still provided some laughs, but again, as alluded to in Geronimo's farewell, he for one was going through the motions. It will be interesting to see how the new Mike show evolves, now that Geronimo is not grand deciderer of topicality and has relinquished stranglehold on direction. ///// So, I too thank Don & Mike for providing some entertainment through the years and during some low moments, proving that even those who love to hate can have a kinder side. And let's give Mike and his gang a little time to find their sea legs, lest you forget when Don & Mike first came to WJFK they spent hour after hour, day after day playing and discussing their old drop-ins from the WAVA days, which passed for supposed entertaininment. (4/15/08) Re: "Eddie Gallaher worked at Baltimore's WITH Radio AM 1230 with his Sundial program (middays) a very small portion of the early 50's before leaving for the Washington airwaves." I see you still have some brain cells left, Jack. In fact, back in the day, we listened to DJs all over the country and heard some really great stuff. You could actually pull in AM stations from NY, Chicago, Buffalo, even Fort Wayne. Eddie Gallaher was one of those that really made an impression. His presentation was like warm Jell-O. There really was a difference in talent then. (No, I'm not living in the past.) Naturally there were also DJs that sucked. When I went to work at WCAO, I was 20. The youngest ever for that station. They played Top-40, had a 40% share of the market, and the next youngest DJ was 35. I felt like Taylor Swift at the CMAs - - but not as pretty. My wife always thought that Jack Edwards was the best DJ in Baltimore. We had many discussions about that. Ed Graham (4/15/08) Leave it to channel 5 to sink to a new low in broadcast journalism. In their coverage of the preparations for the Pope's arrival they chose to interview an obvious lunatic who claimed that, while in first, second, and third grade, she was taken out of class four times a week by a mysterious priest and sexually molested. Of all people to interview they chose this one. (4/15/08) re: "The Mike O'Meara debut ... Here's how it should have gone ... They should have had Bob Barker or Tony Soprano or anyone on the line with Buzz or Rob, perhaps compaining about this lummox Mike O'Meara getting his own show ... Rob recaps some weekend story that involves Cary (always hilarious) or his kids or anything else ..."Buzz Makes The Call", whereby Buzz uses his sexy voice to do phone favors for callers. Okay, now that's a great first hour. I'm listening. I'm laughing..." You'd be the only one, Idea Guy - those are all hideous suggestions that smack of "D&M Lite." Mike made it very clear at the top of the show that this was HIS car; Don's influence was still felt, but it didn't overpower the show. Based purely on what I heard yesterday, I'm going to be "listening and laughing" already, without being reminded that there use to be someone else there. (4/15/08) Much like Don couldn't go on with the show because it reminded him too much of Freda, I find that I can't go on listening to the "Mike O'Meara" show because it reminds me too much of the Don & Mike Show without Don. Sorry Mike, but I'm out. Anyone want to go to the Garfunkel concert? or how about Oates! Maybe we could go to one of those old Stan Laurel or Bud Abbott movies. And I hear Sigfried still has a great tiger show in Vegas! The point is, some guys worked better as a team and Don and Mike were a classic example of two guys who worked well together, but I can't bear to listen to them alone...it's just not right. Goodbye Don, good luck and I hope you find the peace and happiness in life you are looking for. Greg in Timonium (4/15/08) Ha ha ha... Not only are you no Siskel & Ebert, man... your mama forgot to sit on your egg long enough to develop a brain or respect! That Lee Shepard is a warm interviewer who knows how to ask a question and get outta da way. I am so jealous of Bob Duckman for getting to do that interview. It was warm and wonderful! But, it's not a Cheap Channel liner card so you do not unnerstand it, son. The only thing that would make it better is if it was that Shannon Bream with Lee Shepard. 'Cause she got SUCH a beautiful face... AND she gots a Big Bottom! Mmmm... wonderful! Your Mangrove Mama's Mangrove Papa (4/15/08) I'm no Siskel & Ebert, but here's a review of that Duckman interview. It would have been great if they could edit out Lee Shephard. Bob's got all this energy, and Shephard with each question drags it down to the ground. Average = half slow. Langdon, off on the left there, seems uninvolved. The 29 minutes could make a great 14 minute interview. (4/15/08) Thanks for the info on Dave Fox. Got all positives on the new Mike O'Meara show on this first day. People remarked how they really like the "human Rob" and the more Buzz. Mike sounded great as always....Steve from KCJJ in Iowa City (4/15/08) The Mike O'Meara debut was stilted, boring and just lame. For a show that was in the planning for months, it is shocking how little thought went into the first show. When Mike announces that Buzz has learned some things about what the show was going to be about just today, that's a very bad sign. Here's how it should have gone. Cold Open (a la Saturday Night live)... Basically, we're in a sketch before we even introduce the show... Mike's strength is his voices. They should have had Bob Barker or Tony Soprano or anyone on the line with Buzz or Rob, perhaps compaining about this lummox Mike O'Meara getting his own show. Then let Mike riff. He is SO MUCH better at being funny in someone else's skin. (By the way, I'd do variations of the cold open every day, using all of Mike's voices... they could even do fake commercials, anything to sound different when the show kicks off. Nobody on radio is doing anything like that.) Then after a quick intro... we're off with a Rob bit... What is Rob's strength?... he's a pretty good storyteller and he's got a good deal of bile. "Rob's Bitter Weekend Moment" would have been perfect... Rob recaps some weekend story that involves Cary (always hilarious) or his kids or anything else. We then follow up with a Buzz moment... Now Buzz is a news guy, but deciding to do THREE Buzz reports in the space of single show is just downright lazy. My suggestion: Expanding "Buzz Makes The Call", whereby Buzz uses his sexy voice to do phone favors for callers. Okay, now that's a great first hour. I'm listening. I'm laughing. (4/15/08) /\ April 15 Messages /\ ![]() \/ April 14 Messages \/ Okay, I've had it. According to you guys, Tony Kornheiser (who is a very good writer) is the funniest quipster since Groucho, since you constantly manage to throw in some feeble line or two that he utters on his show. How come when I watch him on the NFL telecasts, he sits there like a fish out of water with nothing to say? Okay, I don't get it. If there is anyone who is reading this, please tell me why WHFS and WJFK keep firing and hiring the same people over and over again? Do you know how many talented folks are out here who are never given the chance to really put on an entertaining, compelling show instead of the same old boring political issues-driven drelb? All day long we hear the same exact program, albeit with a different host every few hours. Same thing with sports. Same show all day, rotating hosts. There's nothing creative, nothing innovative. Please tell me how all of these broadcasters are "talent". Limbaugh talks to himself all day long and white boys love it. At least produce a satire once in a while, ditto-nerd! Okay, here's the deal. I swear I'm not making this up. I've had my own show, I've had radio experience. I write, I produce, I can interview anyone about anything and make it entertaining. I would go on the air FOR FREE for six months. I don't care what station, what time. I will guarantee you that I will beat any show opposite mine in ratings when those six months are up. Why? Because on each given day, you will not know what will happen next. You will want to tune in every day. Okay, enough with shows that are unlistenable. Junkies, Big O, Dukes, Imus, Mickey, Amelia, Mark, Peanuts, Cubby, Juanita....all of you. You're all a bunch of noise. Sorry, folks. I had to do this when I saw that Brian Wilson was returning for the upteenth time. I can't take it anymore. Greaseman on Saturdays. Same old stuff, over and over and over. PD Cruze is quoted as saying, "It's been suggested that I'm out of my mind, and it may be true. But in a day when our industry is facing more and more competition, we're flying in the face of 'normal' radio procedures and building a stable of talented 'personality' shows on DC101. Having Greaseman on Saturday morning gives us yet another piece of audio entertainment content that you can't get anywhere else but DC101." Hey Cruze, have some chutzpah. Put me on. I know radio, I know what to do in order to have a successful program. If you waant to build a stable and really become the tops in this market, put me on 3 in the morning. I don't care. I know I'll be the most entertaining show you'll have---GUARANTEED! P.S. When does Arthur Godfrey and Garry Moore begin their HFS morning show? (4/14/08) Steve Soboroff of Iowa City- the Dave Fox that was in DC in the 80's is a different guy. Rodriguez, Key West FL and original staffer (7PM-Midnight) at KRNA Iowa City in 1974 (4/14/08) Thank you so much for the link to the Bob Duckman interview. I have known Bob since the late 60's but seldom run into him anymore. Bob is one of the kindest brightest souls I have known. Listening to him on the air is like listening to your favorite melody. Regards Biff (4/14/08) The difference between WJFK & WHFS is the copetition. WHFS NEEDS Baltimore talkers not shock jocks if they're gonna take any sort of run at WCBM & WBAL in the ratings. I think had CBS-Baltimore had a brain and kept Rouse & brought back his company for 105.7 mornings, Ed Norris in the afternoon, Orioles baseball, and throw in some WJZ news updates and the traffic every 10 to 15 minutes and I think WHFS would be a bit better in ratings and could even take a decent chomp out of WBAL & WCBM. That's a huge difference compared to WJFK who has no stable competition in DC. Quality is everything and WCBM & WBAL seem to have it. WMAL is going nowhere, 3WT has not been around long enough to make any impact and even then they need to get their lineup and presentation right. Ed Norris deserves ever part of the 3 to 7 slot on HFS more so than Mike. Being 25 y/o everytime I've listened to Norris I have found the show to have good content, mean while D&M were busy being stupid. Don's berating of callers, to segments of what in your refridgerator makes farting sounds. The crap on their Valentines Day show was great... Not! Those guys are like 55 years old going through puberty all over again. That's so cool!!! Again not! For me there's nothing entertaining about that. It's all just my opinion and I may be the only one who thinks those things about D&M. I prefer stuff that actually funny, interesting or has good content. Don & Mike never at least for me could carry one of those things in any of the 5 minutes I tried to give their show. Personally I'm glad Ed Norris is on in the afternoons on WHFS, he has a good show and that's where he belongs. Now WHFS just needs to rid of the morning has-beens. You rid of the wrong morning show CBS Baltimore! (4/14/08) Two hours into the Mike O'Meara Show, and I'm liking what I'm hearing. The show opening was a lil dry, Don had a special way of setting the table for the day. I think they will feel there way through this. We have a Robb who's being a normal person, and much more Buzz. I like the interaction between the Junks and O & Dukes. I like the greater amount of guests, broader range of topics, more in depth interaction with Robb, cross promotion, and overall less elitism that we had with Don. Farewell Don! My best of luck too you. You are one of my favorite entertainers of all time. Having Beth-Ann will be a huge addition as well. Sacramento Fan (4/14/08) Re: "what a joke taking mike off the air for some piece of crap brian wilson, who???" If you don't live in Baltimore anymore, who cares?. They're taking Mike off the air to put Ed Norris on in the afternoon, not Brian Wilson. They would have moved Norris regardless of who they hired for the other shift. (4/14/08) Unless I missed it when scanning the mailbag today, I don't think anyone mentioned that when 105.7 reran Don's farewell on Saturday, they hacked apart the section where he criticized station management for not running Mike's new show and for its new "traffic every 15 minutes" format. It sounded like a CD skipping. (4/14/08) Does WJFK not grasp that internet streaming is the future of ad revenues? This is a critical day to have sufficient bandwidth for internet streamers, especially with WHFS dropping the show. Of course, as always, WJFK isn't up to the task. You'd think they'd especially want to placate the portion of their audience who have (possibly high-paying) office jobs. Where oh where should I spend my disposable income. Get a clue WJFK. (4/14/08) DCRTV, I just got word that J.Anthony Brown walked off the Tom Joyner Morning Show this morning. Clear Channel didn’t even exist in Washington until 2000, which is when Bennett became the Market Manager. He was fired by the Rales brothers who owned 570 AM and Oldies 100 because they couldn’t make money. He was hired by Evergreen to run WGAY, and he ran that station so far into the ground that changed formats after 25 years. He was sent to New York to launch a new FM music station that lost millions in the first 6 months. When he came back to Washington he was assigned to the smallest station in the chain at WTEM AM. After a couple of average years, he was assigned the new Jammin Oldies station shortly after it had been successfully launched. Somehow, someway, he was promoted to the Market Manager Position in 2000, and revenue shares declined each year thereafter. In 2006 he hooked up with Snyder to start Red Zebra with three pea shooters, and was fired again after a year of losing millions. Today he has a consulting firm which has one client, and that is a golf course. Hello Tom Heath! Did you ask any hard questions? (4/14/08) I'm sorry, what was "ground-breaking" about Bryant Gumbel's approach on the NFL Network? Saying, "It appears he has the first down" EVERY TIME a guy ran WELL past the first down marker? Getting names wrong ALL THE TIME? Gumbel was unspeakably tiresome in the booth, and it's for the best that he left. Sincerely, TMU (4/14/08) Eddie Gallaher hosted mornings in Washington from 1947-2000. (4/14/08) Is it just me, or does Brian Wilson sound a little bit like the bastard love child of Mr. Magoo and Don Imus? (4/14/08) (regarding the designation "NEW") from the Federal Trade Commission website: When can a company advertise a product as "new"? The answer depends on how the ad uses the word "new." For example, under the rules governing the identification of textiles, fabric cannot be advertised as "new" if it has been reclaimed or respun. The rules governing advertising claims for tires prohibit the use of the word "new" to describe retreads. However, when no specific regulation applies, each case must be considered within the context of the ad. At least one FTC advisory opinion has suggested a six-month limit on the use of the word when advertising the introduction of a "new" product not previously on the market. See the "New Claims" section, at www.ftc.gov (4/14/08) Joyce remembers Herson's On the Pike. DC oldtimers will remember when Herson's 8th & O was the place to go (unless you went to "Mister are-uh" as in the letter "are-uh"). Next to a new car, a Chernerized car is best. (4/14/08) I enjoyed the final Don and Mike show and my best to Mr. Sorce. From listening to the farewell show, I think he does get back in the business but in a different role. He's too talented to just walk off in the sunset. If he's gone for good, I hope he enjoys life and his time off. Thanks to him and Mike O'Meara for a funny show over the years and best wishes to Mike in his new show. One question: Can someone out there list the longest running DC radio shows? Harden and Weaver were around a long time and Don and Mike were 22 years. Are there more long tenured shows out there I'm missing? (4/14/08) ".........But in most cases, the decline in station revenues can be directly attributed to declining sales - not declining ratings........" If that is the case, why bother with program directors in the first place? Just use satellite programming, and threaten your sales people with pay cuts. It appears that WJZW is 90% automated already. What exactly is there for a PD to do? (4/14/08) Dave, After being one of the most successful hosts in TV history both in sports and news at NBC and HBO. Bryant could not make fans warm up to a new style of covering football. What started off as a ground breaking, a 21st century style of broadcasting where Gumbel was to engage partner Cris Collinsworth in a conversation about football. What was exactly the executives at NFL Network wanted it turned out that the fans hated it. NFL fans want traditional play by play and color do not confuse them with innovative broadcasting they simply can't handle it. So Friday Gumbel had enough and left the NFL Network. He will continue at HBO and also do other projects at NBC but his days at the NFL Network are over. www.examiner.com... Has the dysfuctional JFK "family" become functional? (4/14/08) 2 Random thoughts - 1. The Globe isn't new anymore. 2. Mike Moss has never been funny on WTOP. (4/14/08) Dave's response: I've always thought that the FCC should fine stations who continue to call themselves "new" more than six months after they have a new format. The Globe launched in February 2007. It was no longer "new" last August..... Citadel is only taking Clear Channel's lead. CC apparently cut commissions a few weeks ago... Posters make a good point, about hard-working sales people bringing in 100% of the revenue. But in most cases, the decline in station revenues can be directly attributed to declining sales - not declining ratings. In this climate, if the careers of programming people can be ended, the sales people can and should be asked to work a bit harder to bring in new business. A lower take-home rate is about a good an incentive as any. (4/14/08) Dianne Roberts sighting. Saw her one night last week on channel 32 Howard University TV co-hosting that night's fundraising efforts. I don't like to encourage women sports casters but I thought she was alright. Speaking of sportscasters ain't Hakim a politically correct hiring, like the WaPo does all the time now, seems okay to me considering his experience level. I can still remember the spots during the program -- Herson's On the Pike, etc. Hope all is going well for you in the Keys. Blessings always. Joyce Conroy (WHFC) (4/14/08) So do I have this right? Citadel cans something like 100 employees nationwide, including Chris Core who must have been well paid but also must have be getting some ratings and generating revenue, to save money and now they are cutting the commissions of the people who actually bring in the money - the sales people – to save more money. Do they think that this will motivate the sales people to sell more so that they can keep their previous incomes? The Citadel bean counters may think so, but when the experienced sales people leave and are replaced with rookies the only thing that is likely is that revenue is going to go down more. This sure looks like a circular firing squad to me! (4/14/08) I was out of town this week and did not get to hear Don's goodbye until Sat morning. It took all I had not to cry. I have to say that if you really listened to the show this past year you could tell he really was conflicted about staying or going. Thanks for the laughs Don and good luck in whatever you do after this, I know you'll give it your best. WB Centreville, VA (4/14/08) "-----DCRTV hears that budget-cutting Citadel is cutting the commissions for its ad sales staff at"....... "oldies WJZW. And the troops are not happy.------." Forgive me for asking a dumb question. Sales people work very hard full time. They actually bring in revenue. How much revenue does the part time program director bring in? What kind of hours does he put in? How does he justify the horrible way the station sounds? Why doesn't management cut his salary first, then cut the sales people? It seems like the people who do the least work, get the most money.I hope all of the sales people leave and let the PD do some selling.
