1. According to a website Krystal Koons is the finance manager. 2. It was great hearing Craig Heist back on TOP for the sports report yesterday. (1/29/08)

So does the new Hearst deal mean that the Ravens programming on MASN is done for? And speaking of MASN, what's the word on the Nats and O's in HD for 2008? From what I've heard, it's not likely to happen anytime soon. -jason (1/28/08)

Since WBAL TV is the home of the ravens pre-season games i wonder when the ravens is featured on Monday nite with WBAL or WJZ simulcast them? (1/28/08)

Krystal or Tammy? Nails on a chalkboard or ear piercing dog whistle? Hmmm... I'll vote if the loser will hire a spokeswoman that doesn't frighten the sh*t out of me! OMG! Presidents Day is coming! Double the ad spots! (1/28/08)

Found a link on my friend Skip's 98wrc.com website that gives you a good idea what Greaseman is up to. Click on Looking for a house under the Updates header. so (1/28/08)

“…you can bet that CBS makes a fast and hard play for WTOP FM. They have wanted it forever, now is their chance.” In case you haven’t noticed, CBS isn’t exactly in Buying Mode right now. More likely Bonneville would buy certain CBS assets than CBS would buy WTOP. (1/28/08)

The Baltimore Sun is also reporting the new extended Radio deal with the Ravens and WBAL TV the new home of Ravens pre season games. www.baltimoresun.com... John T. Henneman (1/28/08)

Any news regarding greaseman lately. I see that he still does his little videos on his own website and in a few videos he says "stay out of it mr. goldman, it doesn't concern you." Who is this Mr. Goldman he is referring to? I assume someone keeping him off the airwaves? I thought if anyone would know you would. Thanks for your time and you have a great website.(1/28/08)

Dave's response: I haven't heard anything from Grease. My guess is that he's burned out from the radio biz. And if he's got the dough to go sailing and enjoy the stuff he likes, more power to him. Maybe he and Don Geronimo could do the radio version of "The Bucket List" later this year.....

I felt particularly well informed this afternoon having received WBAL’s “Breaking News” email announcing that “TV-11 Becomes Home of Ravens Preseason Games WBAL-TV will broadcast all four Ravens preseason games.” I guess one man’s breaking news is another man’s spam. Bob in Pikesville (1/28/08)

Ahhh, isn't retired life great? Saw retired Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs this morning relaxing at the Dennys in sunny Daytona Beach the day after the ROLEX race. He looked at my plate and said, "Boy, I can't eat that much food anymore, I'm not young anymore," and smiled and walked off. I was for a moment in the presence of greatness past. I said to my buddy, "I would have thought he would have retired with at LEAST IHOP money if not Bob Evans!" :-) (1/28/08)

A lot of wrestling fans will be happy in Prince George's to see USA-HD and Sci Fi-HD picked up soon as World Wrestling Entertainment started HD telecasts on those two cable channels just last week. I'll be curious to see if "The Doctors" can raise more than a pulse at WUSA. The station has struggled for years with its syndicated offerings. Everett W. (1/28/08)

I don’t know if anyone else noticed the stifled laughter this morning when Lisa Baden was doing traffic. She had a live commercial for Kaopectate. She struggled all the way through it, didn’t break up, but came very close. You could also hear the newguys…kind of egging her on. Very funny, very refreshing. PLB (1/28/08)

“I would think that the church would keep the TV and Radio in Salt Lake City and dump the rest to the highest bidder.” Oh yes, I just drove by 3400 Idaho Avenue and saw a For Sale sign out front of the building! Just like the one that was supposedly out front of 1801 Rockville Pike a few weeks ago. And the one that was supposedly out front of Red Zebra a few weeks before that. And the one that was supposedly out front of WAVA before that. And the one…. By all means, lemmings, believe everything you read on the Internet! (1/28/08)

Good Afternoon: In celebration of our 210th anniversary, the Marine Band's 2008 Showcase Series centers around several special Living History concerts. With unique repertoire, numerous guest artists, period instruments and uniforms, and galleries of artifacts and images, each concert will represent a journey back in time in American history to experience the evolution of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. The Feb 3 (2 p.m.) concert at the Clarice Smith Center at UMD will be a reenactment of the one of the longest-running programs in radio history, NBC's "The Dream Hour," which aired from 1931 until 1954. Guest local radio personality Dennis Owens will join the Marine Band onstage as radio announcer, providing a first hand look at how the band put these broadcasts together. If you'd like to read more about the Living History season, the Dream Hour concert or to listen to an original broadcast from 1951, please visit this page: www.marineband.usmc.mil... Regards - Amanda (1/28/08)

President Bush will deliver his final State of the Union address tonight at 9 ET on various networks. The networks that will carry President Bush's SOTU speech include ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, C-SPAN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, & Fox Business Network. (NOTE: Fox Business Network will be the ONLY biz network to carry the SOTU address, because rival CNBC will air the New England Patriots documentary simultaneously.) (1/28/08)

Dave's response: I'll be watching "Top Gear" on BBC America.....

Dave, You’ve got to include Melanie Russell if you’re pitting Krystal Koons against Tammy Darvish. Melanie gets at least as much air time as the other two, and is certainly hotter than Krystal! (1/28/08)

CBS sold Marketwatch to Dow Jones in 2005. (Notice the header stating "Marketwatch from Dow Jones) Now it is part of Fox thanks to their purchase of Dow Jones. (1/28/08)

Last night's Duke at Terps game delivered a 36% ratings gain over last year's contest and reached 120,000 households across the Baltimore and Washington D.C. markets. Yesterday, the Terps garnered a 6.0 rating/9 share (nearly 70,000 households) in Baltimore and a 2.4 rating/4 share (approximately 55,000 households) in the Washington region. Last year's Duke at Maryland game on Comcast SportsNet reached 39,000 households and earned a 3.4 rating/9 share in the Baltimore market and a 2.1 rating/5 share (50,000 households) in the Washington region. The game yesterday was the No. 1 most watched sporting event of the day in Baltimore, out-delivering college basketball on MyNetwork (0.7 rating) and CBS (0.6 rating), skating on NBC (4.6 rating), the NBA on ABC (1.7/ and 1.8 ratings), and golf on CBS (2.9 rating). It also beat all competition on WNUV, WUTB, & WBFF in the time period. The game's popularity boosted viewership for Comcast SportsNet's SportsNite: Post Game Edition, which immediately followed the game at 9 p.m.. SportsNite, which covered Gary Williams' post game press conference, exclusive player interviews and analysis from Comcast SportsNet's Brent Harris, drew almost 40,000 fans across both markets. (1/28/08)

Hey Dave, www.broadcastingcable.com is already reporting some changes coming to area TV stations this upcoming fall season. In DC, ABC7 has picked up "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" from WUSA-9 and will air the game show at 12:30pm in place of "Merv Griffin's Crosswords", which is not expected to be renewed. Also, WUSA-9 will air the new medical talk show spinoff from Dr. Phil called "The Doctors" at 4pm. Finally, NBC4, along with other NBC O&O's, is not expected to renew "In The Loop with iVillage" and could replace it with a new syndicated version of "Deal Or No Deal". In Baltimore, ABC2 will replace "Martha Stewart" with "The Doctors". -Greg in Perry Hall (1/28/08)
RE: Froggy voice tracking. They are tracked for all day parts except for Morning drive. (1/28/08)

Joe Ardinger sees ghosts of Civil War soldiers? Damn...I want to place an order for a kilo of whatever he's smoking! Paul (1/28/08)

Dave's response: Hell, I often see the ghost of Jay Beattie floating around at the intersection of Fairfax Parkway and Fox Mill Road, very late at night.....

(Regarding the 1/28 Rant:) Even worse than the radio ads about terminal disease, are those Cancer Treatment Centers of America TV ads where the "patient" says her traditional doctor said she was doomed DOOMED and then walked away indifferent. And the CTCA told her she didn't have an expriation date marked anywherre on her body, and so she lived. Wow, your doctor has the bedside manner of Joey Mengula. More important than that, who is the chick who was in the auto ads where she and a guy replicated the "Lucy pulling the ball away from Charlie Brown" as he tried to kick it ad? She also dressed as a cat for their Halloween ad. She is a hottie. Koons can't say "wow ya". She says "whya". (1/28/08)

Two questions I'd like to address to Cox in Northern Virginia: Washington Post Biz section has a Q&A with Janet Barnard, VP/Region Manager for Cox in Northern Virginia. Whatever happened to the dude with the shaved head who ran the place during the digital buildout and took all kinds of heat from customers...Where'd he go? Also, who is in charge of cable radio WEBR in Merrifield? Cable channel 37 - which is the public service bulletin board channel that carries WEBR's audio - has been running an announcement for a magic show from last September as well as one for keeping your pets safe in the car during "summer heat". C'mon people, do you know how amateurish that comes across? It's like hearing a back-to-school commercial on WASH-FM. (1/28/08)

Dear all, Two pieces from me, their Washington Correspondent, on New York Social Diary today: www.nysocialdiary.com. The first is in the "Social Diary" column, about the shifting sands of democratic loyalty in Washington in the moment of the Clintons and Obama. It's at the bottom of the column. The other in "Across the World," which is a look at the opening of an interesting exhibition of paintings by John Alexander, and a visit to Washington by the comic actor and "Simpsons" star Harry Shearer and his wife, Judith Owen, a singer and songwriter. She is touring with Richard Thompson in "1,000 Years of Popular Music." Also, don't forget to make your reservation today for Thursday's (Jan 31) Q&A Cafe, with PNC Bank President Michael Herrald. We'll be talking banking, loans, mortgages, French bankers, commercial development in Washington, life in Washington, and money money money. (Sorry, no giveaways.) Please phone Jon Moss at 202.338.2000 to make a reservation. We've added two more to the coming season: meteorologist Bob Ryan, and oceanographer/explorer and Animal Planet star Philippe Cousteau, because there really are more subjects to talk about than politics. Have a good week. I hope to see you Thursday. Carol (1/28/08)

Yes, indeed, there is a very vocal group of LDS execs,,,some of them based right here in Kensington, MD who want the radio group to go away ASAP. If it does, you can bet that CBS makes a fast and hard play for WTOP FM. They have wanted it forever, now is their chance. (1/28/08)

Re: "it appears that they're trying to force me to go to digital by deleting channels whenever they feel fit. Comcast sucks!!!" I ran into that over a year ago when Comcast removed my favorite channel. "Oh, we didn't remove it, it's still available in the digital tier," said the CSR. Sorry, folks, that tactic only works when you're a true monopoly. I dumped them in favor of Dish Network, which has lots of little oddball channels no one else does, but which I enjoy tremendously. So, I gotta say, thanks, Comcast, for being such jerks. (1/28/08)

(We just got this Best/Worst vote, even though the deadline passed for nominations on 1/1:) My vote goes from David Burd at 3WT……Yeah for the morning posse and Nigel…… (1/28/08)

With the passing of President Hinckley last night you can be sure that there will be some serious thought about selling off the Bonneville assets. There is a large “vocal” group of LDS folks who are very uncomfortable with the broadcasting business. Money is not an issue for the church. The Senior Bonneville Execs have always said that when Hinckley is not around anymore you can forget the radio group. I would think that the church would keep the TV and Radio in Salt Lake City and dump the rest to the highest bidder. (1/28/08)

Yes Virginia, there is a Portsmouth, in Virginia, and in Maine. Just as there is a Portland on both coasts. Heck, in NJ we had 14 Washington Townships. Who cares what state has what names on their towns, or which towns are in what states? Mind numbing dumb as they come when folks make a big deal over such stuff. Let's discuss something worth discussing, like when will Al and Jesse lead a rally demanding the ouster of the Mayor of Detroit for his activities. How come the ACLU, NAACP and others aren't up in arms for his victimization of a black woman? Had that mayor been white, they would have been all over this. (1/28/08)

Dave's response: Local namewise, I still like Frederick MD, Frederick County MD, Frederick County VA, Prince Frederick MD, and Fredericksburg VA. Too many Freds.....

Ford vehicles equipped with the optional security package indeed have problems near VHF and UHF TV stations. I had a Ford Contour where the keyless entry would not work once parked at the NBC complex and caused the ignition to lock out as well. Ford eventually installed a commercial grade system in the car. The dealer told me they had an awful time with CBS DC because of the same issue. Seems they had provided employee cars that refused to start once parked at the the old Broadcast House complex. However, it is possible as well that it is not the main channel of a station that is the problem, but rather a harmonic component thereof. As for Bonneville selling off its assets. More than likely. Bruce Reese proposed that at least once as a way to pay for all the temple construction. Bruce has not been shy to sell of other broadcast assets such as LA and NYC. President Hinckley was the inspired guiding hand and the velvet gloved fist behind the LDS church's embracement of broadcast communications. From the time when he returned from his youthful mission 70+ years ago, he took an active role in the use of radio as a method to support the church's mission. He took the little office of radio and print and built it into what eventually became Bonneville Communications. He brought KSL AM up to 50kW during the Depression. It could be said that his mastery of media brought the church into the light of the modern day and made it possible for a Mormon to run for President today. Mr. Hinckley made it clear, year after year at General Assembly that as long as he was President, the church would have a presence in broadcast and other media. With him gone, it's a good bet, thought not a sure bet, that the last chapter is about to be written or come to a close. (1/28/08)

re: "do you realize that the undergraduate student body of UM is about 98% different from the one that last rioted?"...did they stop admitting New York students? (1/28/08)

Um, Dave? Portsmouth is in New Hampshire – not Maine. (1/28/08)

Dave's response: You know, there is a Baltimore, Virginia. (OK, New Baltimore.) Well, maybe there's a Portsmouth, Maine, too? Oh, nevermind.....

Hey Jim "suck up" Williams... I didn't see any damn CSN On Campus tonight. In fact, I missed almost the first half of the first half because CSN was showing Georgia Tech beat up on Virginia in overtime. And the bad behavior? Shit, that was three markets ago for me and I graduated in the midst of that bad behavior. I can't wait to see your exclusive story about what led to Ken Broo's departure from channel 9. While you're at it, how about a critique of Gus Johnson's weekend sports updates on WTTG? (1/28/08)

Regarding my post of Comcast removing the TV Guide channel, this was done in D.C. (1/28/08)

Dave's response: As far as I'm concerned, the TV Guide Channel is totally useless. And Comcast here in Reston gives it on two channels - 83 (analog) and 100 (digital).....

From the wire services at 12 Midnight, "(Salt Lake City, UT) -- President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints just passed away. The leader of the LDS church passed away at 7 p.m at his home surrounded by family. Hinckley was 97-years-old. He was the 15th president of the Church." Sooooooo does this mean that Bonneville can stop transmitting those super secret messages from the spires of the Temple off the beltway? I'm spending waaaaaay too much money on aluminum foil to line my windows and make hat liners out of. Now is a good time to remind DCRTV posters that all of the usual armchair radio authorities can commence with the speculations & rumormongering about Bonneville's stations now being up for sale. Automobiles and trucks are stalling within a 5-block radius of the Empire State Building at 350 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, and some are wondering if it has to do with the 13 TV and 19 FM transmitters atop the building. The NY Daily News reports. Of course the building's top has been the host to multiple FM and TV antennas since the 1950s and before. (1/27/08)

Comcast Howard County still has the TV Guide Channel on 74, as of today....... (1/27/08)

Hey Jim, do you realize that the undergraduate student body of UM is about 98% different from the one that last rioted? To whom are you talking? Maybe instead of rioting they'll just swallow some goldfish or see how many people they can fit in a phonebooth. (1/27/08)

Sorry I have not been able to thank you sooner for the arrogance and deplorable thoughts you spewed onto the public's airwaves last week. Thank you for showing not only Americans and the world what a pompous ass looks and sounds like, but what an asshat with pulse can accomplish. Your remarks about the death of another individual was spot on. Thank you for allowing the world to see what you are made of. You are a true humanitarian! You are the living proof of stupidity and ignorance. You have succeeded to get the spot light not just on yourself, but every other half-witted hair-do that blows hot air out of the same hole you once kissed your mom with, kissed your pillow with, kissed your neighbor with and kissed your boss's ass with...Please continue to show America and the world why our education systems fail to bring leaders into this world. Thank you! By the way there are professionals you might want to look into that might be able to help you. The first one I'd recommend is a dentist and the second is a hair stylist. The third and final professional you should seek out is any representative of any religion (big, small or cultist) your not getting anywhere near heaven. (1/27/08)

Dave's response: Your love letter to John Gibson?

I currently have Comcast cable and noticed that a couple of my channels were mysteriously blank when I clicked them on. One being the TV Guide Channel which provided the channel listings with the times and shows being offered. So I call Comcast and they said "oh yeah, that channel has been taken off of analog, but we're having a special where you can get a cable box free for 6 months". I'm assuming that they sent this info in one of my cable bills, but considering I usually just pay the bill and throw away all the other stuff, I really don't know. So now, I have no way of seeing what's on cable unless I use the tv guide that comes in the Post each Sunday. And half the time I can't find mine. Now, I'm fully aware that they're going to eventually do away with analog and only provide digital, but it appears that they're trying to force me to go to digital by deleting channels whenever they feel fit. Comcast sucks!!! (1/27/08)

It is nice to see Gwen Tolbart looking mighty limber and docile in front of her weather maps again. Her many hours of physical rehabilitation has paid off! Great job, Gwen! Thank you!!! I thought she was going to come back to work in the same condition as my favourite Los Angeles anchorwomen Marta Waller, as seen in this link anchoring the news from her car seat. www.youtube.com (1/27/08)

I could be wrong about this..but I'm not so sure that all of Froggy's stuff is "voice-tracked"..I had been told that Bob Delmont's show was via satellite; I assume that the morning show, mid day and afternoon shifts are live..but like I said..guess I could be wrong; can anybody tell me for sure? I sometimes suspect that "The Mike And April" morning show may replay parts of their show later on in the morning...you might be listening between nine and ten o'clock..and hear something that actually happened a couple of hours prior. But I think a lot of what you hear on Froggy is live. Tom in Denton, MD (1/27/08)

Re:Former CC monkey in Salisbury..you are right on about that CHEAP CHANNEL place and Brian Cleary. He had to have his hands on EVERYTHING. NO ONE could do their job right according to him. NOTHING was good enough. But the whole place is on voice track mode or syndication with the exception of a couple morning shows and afternoons shifts... (1/27/08)

Yo Dave, the problem w/CHEAP CHANNEL Salisbury is they got rid of all of their staff and talent and then let the whole show be run by Brain Cleary. He's a control freak and the perfect lab rat to run the whole cluster there in Salisbury. Everything's automated and you can have a guy from half way across the country voice track and you don't hear anything that’s local anymore. The pay sucks and you wonder why he's gone? They'll find some other schmuck to run the thing for even less money. Simple economics watson...Former CC monkey in Salisbury!!!!!! (1/27/08)

Battle of the Hotties - 2 suggestions for you: 1) Have a third choice for each battle of ‘neither of the above’ 2) Have a playoff among the winners, maybe doing this twice a year, or at least annually (1/27/08)

Dave's response: We will be doing "playoffs" of the winners come this spring.....

In regard to Brian Cleary: ... Brian did seem to be good on the air as far as interacting with the audience...he emceed that "Georgetown Country Show" more than once..and did a fine job both times; actually he may have done it three times, now that I think about it! I did check Froggy's website Friday night..and found they've taken his byo off, so he must be gone; am still curious as to what happened! Hope they don't go making any other changes at Froggy 099.9; they have some (in my opinion) fine talent there (and a couple of them that I know happened to be good ole "eastern shore" people! Tom in Denton, MD P.S. One more thing I noticed: on Thursday's "Mike And April" show, Randy Scott was missing (they said he was out with a cold..yeah..right!. (1/27/08)

Joe Ardinger said he has the ghosts of Civil War soldiers marching in the alley behind his townhouse. So when Slo Joe looks in the mirror does he see "dead" people or "uh" people? He sure was a helluva lot more talkative on his radio show than he's been on the Don and Mike show since the " I can't work with O'Meara" incident. But less of El Jefe and J. Dubbs! (1/27/08)

Dave, Well tonight Duke comes to College Park to play Maryland. The game will be seen on CSN with a special pre game edition of CSN on Campus starting at 6pm. The Maryland radio network WJFK-FM in Washington, and ESPN 1300AM/WHFS-FM will cover the big rivalry game . Let's hope that we don't have that bad behavior that has been the case in many cases when Maryland has beaten Duke in the past. Lets hope cooler heads prevail and that the vast majority of students at Maryland who behave and are good kids are great fans do not have their reputation destroyed by the actions of a few silly people. www.examiner.com... Cheers, Jim (1/27/08)

“I wonder what convinced the PD that the playlist needed updating.” Well, that would be the consultant and research, of course…. -Brian (1/27/08)

Everything about the numbers with Clear Channel in Salisbury is right and I'm sure had something to do with them getting rid of Brian Cleary, but he also is not a great person to deal with. I had a few run ins with him myself and people I've talked to. He may be a good MC (to the guy who wrote below) and may have been a "nice guy" that day....But from my dealings and in talking to many other people, he is FAR from that. People who I've talked to inside say they never liked him. That he was the hardest person they ever worked for. So I'm sure there were many reasons he was given the go. (1/27/08)

The Joe Ardinger Show---MMMMMM..Like crack for your soul. Paul (1/27/08)

Dave's response: Damn, I forget to listen. Got caught up in the season premiere of "Torchwood." Sorry Joe.....

Does Ms. Swanson cluck like a chicken in that outfit? With this revelation of Ms. Swanson's movie career I bet it turns on Mr. Geronimo even more. Is this a leading question? CBS owned MarketWatch and then sold it off in one of them financial deals that the conjurers of wall street are so good at doing. Dave Feldman sighting, saw in a millisecond for channel 5 promo. Apparently Feldman will be at Super Bowl. channel 5 sport's now seems reduced to last 2-3 minutes of the 11-11:30 PM news. I've never bought that crap about local sport's news going away because of ESPN and Fox sport's etc. You don't get much coverage of local sport's on them outlets. And why can't same be applied to Weather Channel? Yet the weather coverage has esploded beyond all comprehension on local news. Some evil consultant came up with this? I want thumbs. I take no comfort from weather announcer saying they'll be keeping on eye on it for us. TTTTTTTTTtiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnaaaaaaaaa (1/26/08)

Hey Dave, I will donate $50 to DCRTV upon the sale of this fine Audioarts/Wheatstone R-16 console. It was used weekly to do Oldies Block Party. Someone will really like this one! I have replaced it with a larger board. cgi.ebay.com... Thanks! Tom Conroy (1/26/08)

Dave's response: Cool.....

The story with (Clear Channel Salisbury ops manager) Brian Cleary is that even though Froggy and Q105 finished 1-2 in the 12+ (the 12+ were deceiving), Froggy got killed and has been by Cat Country in key female demos and Q105 while doing well in female demos had their lowest 12+ numbers in years. Q is getting increased competition especially is afternoons. Kiss has never gotten off the ground and Magic while usually steady had a bad book.... (1/26/08)

Remember when the music rotation at Smooth Jazz 105.9 was: Sade, Kenny G., someone else, (repeat)... They seem to have cut back on those 20-year-old Sade songs and done away with ol' Kenny G completely. I wonder what convinced the PD that the playlist needed updating. (1/26/08)

Dave's response: What? No more "Smooth Operator" on 105.9? What's the smooth jazz radio world coming to?

Because no one else seems to want to answer the question... Bob Ryan has been News4's chief meteorologist since March 1980, making him the longest-serving weathercaster on DC TV. His career began in Cambridge in his home state of Massachusetts, where he was involved in cloud physics research with Arthur D. Little, Inc. A side job as a broadcast meteorologist turned into a fulltime job as principal meteorologist for Boston's WCVB-TV. In 1978, Ryan became the first meteorologist to regularly appear on NBC's Today show. For reasons best left for someone else to explain, Bill Small, president of NBC News, decided to switch WRC-TV 4's Willard Scott with Bob, effective Monday 3/10/80, and the swap would prove a success for all involved. (BTW: Don't let Bob's smiling persona fool you. Being a true professional and a bit of a perfectionist, Bob Ryan has been known to exhibit his Irish temper off-camera when things go wrong, as WRC-TV staffers can testify.) Read the December 30, 1979 Washington Post article about Willard's promotion at DCMemories.com (1/26/08)

I'm going to the store now to buy provisions for my listening party tonight of Joe Ardinger's show on WJFK. Let's see...I have vodka, No-Doze, Whippits, and headache powders on the list (any suggestions?). What a crock of sh*t! (1/26/08)

It was fun catching up on reading past and present mailbags this morning. Since I made a job change near the end of 2007, I have been out of the loop as far as DCRTV is concerned. I can remember when WYRE was almost as popular in this area as WCAO. I work with a guy who worked at YRE during its heyday. talking to him is like going down memory lane for sure! Also enjoyed the posts by Michael Popovec on the site. And I have missed listening to your show in recent weeks Joyce! But since my schedule rotates i should be back as a listener very soon. Also, I think the Nationals should consider putting their broadcasts on radio on the eastern shore. It would help increase their fan base that much more. Burt in Denton (1/26/08)

CBS has some tie to MarketWatch. I can't place it at the moment, but there is some tie! (1/26/08)

("Okay... Before you ever think about voting for Kristen Swanson (the pasty white RoomStore "Chicken Lady") as a Media Hottie, you may want to see her in a black leather thong bikini with red velvet handcuffs talking sex to a fluorescent green vibrator.) I gave it a shot and watched the 2nd part of this and it was the scariest thing I have seen in while. (1/26/08)

The Mailbag has become my favorite form of entertainment! How about that 'Room Store' lady-kinky and sweet! Joyce, I always enjoy your posts! Wow, Bob Brady, The Peppermint Rainbow! Who's next, Tommy Van and the Echoes? Reminds me of wild hickory nuts! Yikes! And let us not forget Kirby Scott-Happy Birthday, Dude! Just remember, nobody can eat fifty eggs-Duke of Hurl (1/26/08)

Re: Clear Channel in Salisbury finally wised up and got rid of Brian Cleary huh? About time I know I've never worked in radio or television..but I fail to understand this post! I've met Brian Cleary; I can't speak about his work as an operations manager. However I have met him (he emceed a show that our band has been a part of over in Georgetown, Delaware)..and if CC (Common Channel) did let him go, I just don't understand their thinking! As has been pointed out in this mailbag, Froggy 99's ratings seem to be up; are you saying that Cleary's presence had nothing to do with that? All I can truthfully say is: he's a nice guy..and a hell of a good MY.C.! Hopefully Clear Channel (right now..am calling "Common Channel") will bring him back! Tom in Denton, MD (1/25/08)

Clear Channel in Salisbury finally wised up and got rid of Brian Cleary huh? About time. (1/25/08)

Mr. Solomon, I loved "Tamed" on YouTube. Was it shot in Richmond, Va.? Thanks, Bob Bell (1/25/08)

Okay... Before you ever think about voting for Kristen Swanson (the pasty white RoomStore "Chicken Lady") as a Media Hottie, you may want to see her in a black leather thong bikini with red velvet handcuffs talking sex to a flourescent green vibrator. (And you have been warned: She gets NAKED.) www.youtube.com and www.youtube.com... Needless to say, the clips are NSFW. (1/25/08)

is bob ryan washington's senior and most veteran weatherman? (i don't count willard)... c. (1/25/08)

BTWS, is Dave Feldman still with channel 5? His last blog entry was Jan. 4. Has anyone seen him on air recently? I didn't know about his college basketball background! For a girl doing sports I didn't mind Diane Roberts either if she's also gone from channel 5. Hey channel 5 how about this, Sue Palka's end of world weather forecast brought to you buy Shakey's Pizza. Hey it's Friday night, bluegrass music! It's pseudo newscast is already a three ring circus so who cares at this point. journalistic integrity come on now. Shawn Yancy's head shaking brought to you by Just A Jerk Chiropratic with offices throughout the Metro D.C. area. Bob of the toothless people in fairfax (1/25/08)

Dave's response: Ahhh, January is a good time for a Caribbean vacation. I'm sure if Feldman got canned we'd have heard something.....

On Thursdays edition of the Don and Mike show a lil' brain called in to say The Grease was on WMET 1160 am. Where have you been my slack jowled yokel Grease departed months ago! Why it's tough going finding the Greae man stuff on the WMET website but they do appear to have a big sale on office furniture over at wmet. And I noticed the afternoon Jazz show was gone Mr. David. You know I thought I saw Grease right after XMAS emptying one of them coin counting machines at a Shopper's Food Warehouse in Centreville. When he finished I saw grease get into a pick up truck loaded down with some nice oak firewood. Sorry to hear of the end of JAXX in Springfield. JAXX stopped booking national acts other than Heavy Metal in nature about a year or so ago. $1.2 million for 7,000 sq. ft. seems light, does that involve the building. Joe Ardinger has a radio show? Another idear from the mind of Michael Hughes or Lisa Herndon? Ardinger can barely think of anything to say anymore on the Don and (Ican't work with him) Mike show and he can't play music so what's the show going to be about? Bring back the Cigar Show! And Tom Gavin already has a radio show Fridays 3-5 pm WEBR online thank yews very much. What's up guys! Does lil' Danny test the mettle of his interviewees for head coach by asking them to do some yard work at Casa de Dead Zebra? I heard lil' danny has called in Bud Grant, Chuck Knoll and old redskin Sam Wyche for interviews? Would have been nice for nostalgia sake to have Bruce Allen as the V.P. of football operations. How about this lil' denny, get Jason Taylor from Miami and somehow draft Chris Long (Howie's son) from Virginia and have the most handsomest and probably not a bad defensive line in the NFL. Think of the marketing possibilties? (1/25/08)

I would like to know what other professionals think about how I feel after listening to the 1 PM newscast on WBAL, AM, Baltimore, today. They lead the newscast with about a one-minute story about the polar bear plunge. An obvious station promotion, based upon all the airtime they’ve given it on the AM and TV. I have nothing against special Olympics, but come on, is it a news story? With all that is going on today in the city, region, state and world, does this rank as the top story? I have found myself listening less to WBAL because of recent programming changes, but have always tuned in at the top of the hour for news, but, maybe, it’s time to check out news on other stations. (1/25/08)

At the rate you are going with these "battle of the hotties" Dave, I expect the next round to be the Rooms to Go lady vs. Krystal Koons (1/25/08)

Dave's response: Well, I was going to do a "hottie" battle of the local car dealer babes - putting Krystal Koons up against Tammi Darvish, but I couldn't find a pic of Krystal. Anyone got one? - UPDATE: Several folks have since sent me pics of Krystal. Thanks.....

"Mike Francesa and Chris Russo on WFAN in New York are certainly entertaining, but when push comes to shove they do provide insightful analysis. If it's not the Redskins or Maryland basketball, Czaban and Pollin can't pull it off." But the guests on Sports Reporters do provide some expertise - Larry Weisman on the NFL, Steve Buckhantz on the Wizards, Chris Knoche on college hoops and Thom Loverro on Nats/MLB, for example. With the Capitals playing their best hockey in years, Pollin and Czaban should give serious thought to bringing into the guest rotation someone who follows the team closely and can provide insights - but I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen. Anyone familiar with the FAN knows that Francesa and Russo aren't exactly the world's biggest NHL guys, but at least they respect the New York hockey fan and provide Rangers, Islanders and Devils related interviews on a regular basis. Pollin and Czaban do nothing of the kind for the Capitals, and I still think they're partly responsible for Ted Leonsis moving his radio broadcasts from WTEM to 3WT last year. "If the topic is not basketball on the JT Show, it’s like an 'Idiot’s Guide to Sports'". I disagree - Brian Mitchell on Redskins issues and the NFL in general is worthwhile listening, while Al Koken can talk knowledgeably about just about any sport (in particular, hockey and golf). There was a caller to Doc Walker's show the other day who came on and started ranting about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama - and it soon led to the host making an ignorant statement about the Iraq war and the caller saying something outrageous about 9-11. That's a textbook illustration of why sports talk radio should avoid politics like the plague. Mike, Fairfax (1/25/08)

It seems like the grand experiment that is WCTG out of Chincoteague Va. isn't exactly panning out as the "new" general manager had promised. Let's review the last 6 months to a year or so shall we…The once promising Classic Rock station had the legendary JJ "Hitman" McKay on a seasonal basis in the mornings, a talented and promising newcomer in "The Good Doctor" during afternoon drive time, and a very popular Friday evening oldies show with Dennis Cope. The small station was beginning to make inroads into the local market and seemed to effectively pick up listeners from the Eastern Shore institution that is WESR, as well as the targeted demographic from as far north as Delmar, Del. According to sources, businesses within the listening area were piping in the station and advertisers were jumping on board as "the little station that could" picked up steam to the point that 106.5 out of Pocomoke actually flipped formats (to Classic Rock) in an attempt to go head to head with their closest competition and regain listeners. Tourist and weekend visitors were impressed enough to make requests via email and written letters to have the station go global via internet streaming so they could listen when not in the area. When rumors of a possible move off Chincoteague surfaced, the Mayor and Town Council of Chincoteague even made public their support of "their" station and their desire to keep WCTG from moving anywhere. It appeared that The Island 96.5 had found a niche with its combination of popular and forgotten Classic Rock infused with genre matching new music and perhaps even more important, personalities that resonated with their listeners. This was not your usual canned format, automated, same as the next guy radio station. All was well until….An LMA was signed giving control of the station to a third party who allegedly had experience in turning small stations into successful entities. Why this was even considered (apart from financial reasons I'm guessing) is unknown. First on the agenda, promises of a "new" WCTG with an infusion of AAA music which, for those familiar with the lower Eastern Shore, is not exactly the format of choice. The "Hitman" is not offered a return to mornings and is replaced with a raw but capable and likeable personality from the Baltimore/DC area who went by the name of Johnny Seaton. The popular four hour Friday evening oldies show with Dennis Cope is nixed with no replacement, leaving listeners no option but to turn to WESR for their 50's/60's/70's fix. Classic Rock staples were slowly replaced with artists from the Adult Alternative format (did I mention that we're talking about the lower Eastern Shore?) With all that being done, at least listeners still had The Good Doctor who, after bringing on a sidekick (Rayce), had turned the afternoon drive time into a legitimate contender that could hang with the big boys. Oops, spoke too soon. One day, without explanation, he too was gone with no replacement. Listeners are now hearing a format that, although Classic Rock is present, is sprinkled with instrumentals, acoustical, folk, foreign language tunes (WHAT!), new artists, new releases, etc. Not saying that this is not appreciated by a percentage of the listening audience, but why attempt to fix something that wasn't broke to begin with. As far as on-air personalities, the mornings are now handled very capably by the oft traveled Doc Holloway although the flair of a JJ Mckay and the "aw-shucks" of Johnny Seaton (also let go without explanation) is missing. Other then that, on-air is reduced to simple music/artist introductions, and the occasional attempt at humor from what seems to be a hodge-podge of whoever happens to be in the studio/office at the time. Businesses are now back to filling the air with old reliable's like WESR or Bay Country. Unfortunately, what once seemed like a small growing comet in local radio on the Eastern Shore has instead become a flickering bottle rocket that had apparently reached it's pinnacle and is now rapidly falling back to earth. Where the fault lies is open for debate but one only has to look so far to see where to place blame. Here's to you 96.5 WCTG, you had a good run, may you rest in peace. (1/25/08)

Don't forget how Radio One **ALMOST** got a sweet deal from the State of MD, exactly ten years ago, when it seemed Cathy Hughes couldn't move OUT of the District fast enough. On December 16th, 1997, a $500,000 package from Maryland's "Sunny Day Fund," which is used to attract businesses and jobs to the Free State, was approved for Radio One. The money was intended to help the company pay for the $4.5 million office building in Lanham where it had moved from DC. According to a Washington Post article from June 11, 1997, the $500,000 was originally proposed to go to Cathy Hughes and son Alfred Liggins as individuals, rather than to Radio One Inc. William S. Ratchford II, director of the MD General Assembly's Department of Fiscal Services said this unprecedented arrangement could hamper state efforts to recoup the money if the station owners failed to meet their hiring goals and didn't repay the money on schedule. Ratchford was also concerned that Hughes and Liggins planned to use only one-fifth of the Lanham building for Radio One, and that job creation would be "marginal at best" because many of the 250 Radio One employees already lived in Maryland. In the final agreement, the Hughes-Liggins companies were to receive a $400,000 loan that was to be forgiven if Radio One added 40 new employees to its 110-person work force and kept them through the year 2005 and also fund $4 million in capital expenditures at company headquarters by the end of 1999. The remaining $100,000 was to be a loan to be repaid at 6 percent interest after five years. However, in mid-January 1998, there was an 180-degree turn of events. Declaring she would not accept "one red cent" from the state, Cathy Hughes spurned the money to protest a recommendation by the MD Legislative Ethics Committee to expel state Sen. Larry Young (D-Baltimore) who had a talk show on her Baltimore station, WOLB-AM. (Young was expelled anyway.) Rudolph A. Pyatt, Jr. wrote in the 1/15/98 Washington Post; "Either Radio One has the financial resources to proceed with its plans to expand or it has a loan commitment from a lender in the private sector. Detractors will no doubt insist in either case that the company did not need a state loan after all." (1/25/08)

Re: (1/24 - The end of the world is near. CBS Radio man talker WJFK-FM is giving Don and Mike phone screener Joe Ardinger his own show. Saturdays from 9 PM to 11 PM) ... You're late to the party, Dave, the end already came. It's called the BDK movie show on Sundays - which he legitimately has titled "the 30 most trifling minutes of radio in history" or words to that effect. (1/25/08)

Well, of course the RADIO ONE execs were all appropriately busy in a media industry conference in the Virgin Islands with former DC mayor Marion Barry discussing important company "business". DOH! :-) (1/25/08)

Dave's response: Jeez. At least they could have sent Olivia Fox over to the DC ceremony. She could have covered the signing live on her new MMJ show.....

What memories the WYRE shot brings back. I was part of the 78-81 Syd Abel hey-buddy era (me, Freda, Max Wulf, Kingston, etc) when that place just smoked. We made absolutely no money but we didn't care! WYRE may have been 250 watts, but it was probably 5 db louder than WNAV and outbilled them by a long shot. WYRE made a lot of careers, for sure. I have no way to verify this info, but someone told me online (supposedly connected to a contractor for VERIZON), that at least some or all of Baltimore county will be wired for FIOS-TV + fiber optic broadband internet by this May/June timeframe, and VERIZON FIOS is significantly faster than the Slowsky turtles at Comcast. I for one hope it's true. The Comcast monopoly needs to end. YAY for competition! (1/25/08)

Dave's response: Wouldn't surprise me. Verizon is very busy wiring my chunk of Fairfax County of late.....

Dave, We have a rare non NFL weekend, the first since September but thanks to some local faces we have plenty of things to watch this weekend. Maryland's own Kimmie Messiner goes for the US Figure Skating title on NBC 4 and 11 this Saturday in primetime. Tonight down under Baltimore's Pam Shriver will be working with ESPN2 on their coverage of the Aussie Open Women's finals at 9:30pm. On Sunday Caps fans get to cheer on Super Alex at the NHL All Star Game. www.examiner.com... Cheers, Jim (1/25/08)

Re: "Glenn Beck says he's the 3rd most popular talk show... Then if you're 3WT, why tape delay your 'best show' to run a bad show live? Ponderous...f*ing ponderous": It could be worse - you could be in New York City, where Beck's show does not air at all! This despite NYC being the homebase for both his TV and radio shows. Now THAT's f***ing ponderous... (1/25/08)

I've heard from a reliable source that Brian Cleary, Operations Manager for Clear Channel Salisbury has been let go. Cleary also handled Afternoon's on Froggy 99.9. Her was promoted to Operations Manager several years ago when Doug Weldon was let go. I checked, and he was not on the air yesterday, but was still on the website as of yesterday afternoon. Most budget items are on hold waiting for a buyer, only those items related to meeting FCC rules are being done. Ironically Froggy and Q-105, as well as 96 Rock were up in the just released Fall book. The Wave, Kiss and Magic were all down. The are more likely to be affected by diary placement since they are all Class A's. Standards 1470 was also down, and Fox Sports 960 didn't show again. (1/25/08)

"but Baltimore was really the 5th most wired city, not 16th. Baltimore City is vastly different and behind Baltimore County. Paul G (1/25/08)

Re: Joe Ardinger's show... what's the downside? This could turn into a great bit if it's terrible, or it will just be the zero share WJFK gets ever weekend anyway. As Dave points out, it's all about morning afternoon drive at WJFK. Other than those timeslots, they have nothing. They actually really SHOULD give Tom Gavin his own show. Maybe enough D&M listeners would tune in out of curiosity, that they might get some numbers. (1/25/08)

Dave's response: Heck, why not the Buzz Burbank show? The Robb Spewak show? Give former D&M show producer "BA" a show. Give Oscar's ma a show.....

J. Gibson used to have a show on MSNBC years ago. It was actually pretty entertaining and he was pretty funny sometimes. When he left for Fox he turned into a completely different person. I don't know if he actually believes the crap he says at this point or he does it to keep his job (which is worse). (1/25/08)

Dave's response: I remember Gibson's show on America's Talking, the network that preceeded MSNBC.....

Sure, OC 104 gets plenty of press cause they are self-promoting themselves. (1/25/08)

I know it's so hard to believe, but Baltimore was really the 5th most wired city, not 16th. The reason for the confusion is that Forbes ranked in different categories, like for instance, public WIFI availability vs. broadband delivered to the home, etc. People forget that Baltimore county was one of Comcast's first completely built out broadband systems way back when Comcast didn't own all of the Washington area cable systems, not to mention that they still don't own some. That helps explain the big Baltimore head start in broadband. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Baltimore county has been wired to some extent for broadband for almost 10 years now? (1/24/08)

Dave's response: I don't know about Baltimore, but I was one of the first subscribers of Comcast's broadband internet service here in Reston. That was 1999.....

RE: The WYRE snapshot. Yes, the transmitter that was in the newsroom is still on the air ! You can see that model, a 250 watt Collins 300-G, at the Radio History Society. Here's a picture of it, carefully crafted into the shot that was posted. The power buttons are not recessed, and indeed, leaning up against them will turn the transmitter off ! I bet that caused a few surprises, because there's delay switch in there that provides time for those tubes to warm up again before you can turn on the high voltage and get back on the air. Come see for yourself ! Just don't touch the switches. www.qrz.com/w3r (1/24/08)

Where's CC Salisbury's Brian Cleary? Randy Scott was on the Toad this afternoon...and he wasn't mentioning that he was "in for Brian". Randy also signed off this evening saying to join him again at 3 tomorrow. No mention of Cleary. Things that make you go hmmmmmm. (1/24/08)

Yes, Jennifer Wagner was at WLMD and was married to Davey Jones. I am Madelaine Waltjen but upon joining WPGC as a rock jock in the 70's my name was changed by Harv Moore & my fellow PGC jocks to Linda Kelly. Linda was the first name of late night jock Dan Steele's wife. Kelly was the name all the other jocks ( Columbus, Jim Collins,Dave Kellogg, Bob Raleigh, etc.) wanted me to use as a first name. After a jock meeting, they compromised and came up with "Linda Kelly." When I came in that night to work my first on air shift there was a note in my box from PD Harv Moore. Harv informed me that by a vote of the on air staff I would go on the air that night as Linda Kelly. I used Linda Kelly as my on air name for 30+ years. Since I'm Irish (O'Meara/Flanigan) it always seemed like a good fit! I'm still in touch with so many of my friends from radio and TV. Madelaine/Linda (1/24/08)

I've heard nothing but good things about the new hip hop Coffee Shop morning show. Great Scott brought back Murph on 93.5 and hired Bill Baker on 104. They are all about making the money and and i believe they made good moves this year. (1/24/08)

I'm normally a pretty fair guy (Happy New Year to All, by the way), but this whining and complaining about Gibson's comments on Fox is just freakin' way too much. Call a God Damned WHAAAAMBULANCE and hop on the gurney; maybe they'll take you to the "Scrubs" set or you can keep on going down the road in hopes that you'll crash through the time barrier, end up on M*A*S*H and maybe Alan Alda might even hold your hand (although the BBW Asian Nurse was more to my liking, Hubba-Hubba…). Now listen, John Gibson looks like one of my clients when I sued the phony Ethiopean Plastic Surgeon (or at the very least demand a refund, for the love of God-you look like one of those melting Salvador Dali clock paintings), but compared to what you hear on the liberal media, Gibson drew nothing but a couple chuckles and a groan (and yeah, I have to say it, one or two of them were sorta funny in a never admit it kinda way, like watching Family Guy at three in the morning after having anonymous sex and sending her home in a cab). If you want to hear intolerant crap and don't want to get up early on Sunday to listen to Calypso Louis, hold your nose and grab a hold of Steph Miller, Cafferty or Herr Olberman (and speaking of Olbermann, Christ were you and Max Headroom separated at birth? You're earning good money, get a decent haircut and spend more than $1.25 so you can at least pretend to be more like your mentor, Joseph Goebbels). I actually heard Miller one day talk about how George Bush held those Florida schoolchildren hostage on 9/11 so that he'd be safe from attack. That is one desperate, self-loathing white woman desperately in need of a serious orgasm, and not the kind you get from reading Ms. Magazine either. Yeah, I'm gonna take her seriously. Yeah, I'm gonna take seriously any of the hypocritical complaints from these losers. If you don't like what you hear, the knob turns both ways. Maybe you can find some 0.0 share AM'er that has a re-broadcasting carriage agreement with Pacifica. Not in the mood to take it anymore, Genghis Cohen temporarily (whaddya lookin' at, mongoose?) in Brooklyn, NY (1/24/08)

I say kudos to the OC104 morning crew for putting on a prank this morning with the music and station. I read a lot of the radio websites and they are getting more press then that station has gotten in a long time. Something that station needs. I've only heard the morning show a few times but sounds like they are having fun and a new fresh sound. Good move Mitch Scott for bringing in the new morning show. It deffinetly needed a change! (1/24/08)

Why, and How, does WJFK-FM stay on the air? Reading things like "Joe Ardinger Gets 106.7 Show" just makes me curious. Dave in Sterling (1/24/08)

Dave's response: Radio stations make about 80 percent of their ad revenue from their morning and afternoon weekday drives. Frankly, WJFK-FM could probably go off the air from 10 AM to 3 PM, from 7 PM to 6 AM, and weekends without losing too much revenue. The FCC wouldn't like that, though.....

Hey does anyone remember Jennifer Wagner from the old WYRE and I think WLMD? I’m wondering if anyone knows where she went, she used to date Davy jones, maybe even married him. I think she got out of radio, I would love to get in touch. She was a friend of linda kellys, I think linda is not in radio anymior either. (1/24/08)

Your front page item re: "How can an entity under a tenuous (corporate buyout) sale situation spin off properties that are part of that sale?" CC has many markets and hundreds of stations for sale now. The CEO has said multiple times that the sale or non sale of any of the stations would not affect the privatization effort. They are selling stations that don't fit into their current business model. It would seem that the number of stations is therefore somewhat fluid. It would seem that they can sell or not sell stations or complete clusters and not affect this deal. They have closed on the selling of several clusters in just the last couple of weeks. It might take longer for transfer of control with the commission, but it would not seem to make any difference. Also, if they sell the two Wash AM's, does that mean they would still have to sell the Fredrick stations (WFRE and WFMD) since these stations were put on the block because of too many stations in the DC market? (1/24/08)

Yes, WTEM is a joke. Bring it strong to the mike, ok Doc Walker lose the nicknames, you’re Retired from football. - Doc's show is targeted to the stupid of the stupid in America. (1/24/08)

"Kirby Scott's dance show on WBAL was fun especially when he featured bands like the Peppermint Rainbow and Bob Brady and the Con-Chords." Joyce Conroy - I remember seeing both Peppermint Rainbow and Bob Brady ("More More More of Your Love") at my high school (Good Counsel) and one other in the greater Wheaton/Silver Spring area, back in the day. The District's mighty dollars speak again: from the Radio Business Report comes this note today, Thursday, 1/25/08: DC mayor signs to bring Radio One back to DC (1/24/08)

Dave's response: I hear that Radio One is planning to launch Adrian 102.3 in honor of the mayor, once it makes its move back to DC.....

Dave, The NFL just released the rating for the season and they have 13 of the top 15 viewed shows of the season thus far. www.examiner.com... Cheers, Jim (1/24/08)

Yes, WTEM is a joke. Bring it strong to the mike, ok Doc Walker lose the nicknames, you’re Retired from football. It’s sad that Al K. will never go against anything J. Thompson says for fear it might be his last statement. If the topic is not basketball on the JT Show, it’s like an “Idiot’s Guide to Sports”. Yes Mike and the Mad Dog are the best, sad that the people over on WTEM don’t listen to how it should be done. Don’t reinvent the wheel. (1/24/08)

RE: The Hip Hop Coffee Shop on OC 104...Come on, how often do you see P1 listeners from an Urban station in a coffee shop, ordering lattes? The show sounds horrible. (1/24/08)

OOPSIE! "Loudoun" is correctly in the SPJ news release. Somehow, the extra "u" was dropped when transposed to the DCRTV website. (1/24/08)

Dave's response: I simply "cut and pasted" the info. They must have later caught the error and corrected it.....

I guess that newspapers, and maybe radio and TV stations too, print/run the advertising that is sent to them by advertisers as long the ad’s content is within their standards. But I do have to wonder if the people (in this case) at newspapers really look at the advertising’s content or just run it for the revenue? While I was visiting Phoenix, ARIZONA over Christmas I saw in 2 different newspapers on the same day with a full-page, color ad for IKEA with retail locations listed in the NEW YORK CITY area where you could get all of their great deals. To bring it local, today on page 2A of the Post, a space which usually carries a premium for advertisers, there is a nice ad for a Bang & Olufsen’s HD-LCD entertainment system and it lists retail locations to visit - in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver – ALL IN CANADA! The “Loony” (sp?) is stronger than the “Buck” so perhaps these aren’t the locations to shop! (1/23/08)

Every time I see John Gibson on TV (which, for some reason, is the channel of choice in our newsroom) I wonder, "why does he rate a show?" Now I know. The executives at Fox are committed to evil. Pure evil. (1/24/08)

Dave's response: He must have some dirt on Roger Ailes. How else could he manage to keep his job?

Dave- I agree that Miller's better than Neil BOREtz (cats singing Xmas carols is better than his show). However Glenn Beck says he's the 3rd most popular talk show (I assume it's Rush #1 and Hannity #2). Then if you're 3WT, why tape delay your 'best show' to run a bad show live? Ponderous...f*ing ponderous. (1/24/08)

If Joe Ardinger has a radio show, does this mean we're officially hurtling even faster towards the apocolypse? Paul (1/24/08)

Dave's response: You know, Joe may surprise us all and deliver a rip-roaringly good show. I hear that Michael Hughes is thinking about putting Tom Gavin in the 11 PM Saturday slot.....

“I've always thought that John Gibson, the 5 PM anchor on Fox News, is a worthless piece of crap.” Is there anyone on Fox News who you DON’T think is a worthless piece of crap? Cavuto, O’Reilly, Van Susteren, Hannity, Hume..at one time or another, you’ve basically said you hate all of them. Personally, I think Cafferty and Olbermann are the 2 most worthless blowhards on cable. (1/24/08)

Dave's response: I do like Judge Nepolitano (spelling).....

Humm......you mentioned the Arbitron slogan again, 3WT and you have more people talking about it ....you must be very good in this line of work.....are you on the radio station's payroll....humm... (1/24/08)

Dave's response: Nothing on his MySpace page about getting yanked.....

Re: Notable Quotable. Someone actually listened to that show? (1/24/08)

Dave's response: Stephanie Miller is better than Boortz.....

Tuned in at lunch today to the Bram Weinstein-Larry Michael Skins lovefest, and it was predictably hilarious. Like two maiden aunts walking past the brothel, they professed to be shocked, SHOCKED at how other reporters have jumped up and said that Fassel will be the next coach. Their point appeared to be that, because the Skins won’t confirm or deny, it was somehow WRONG for other reporters to write the story. I realize that Larry’s brain contains no thoughts that are not dictated by the Redskins front office, but that’s the biggest load of [BLEEP] ever. The Skins front office (as correctly pointed out by Bram) has the same relationship with the media that the Nixon White House did. Remember when Danny said that their website and the radio stations would give the “real truth”? Well, it now appears to be the Skins’ position (straight from the mouth of Larry “House Man” Michael) that any reporter who reports on the Skins without getting the official blessing from Vinny “Fredo” Cerrato is committing journalistic malpractice. Yo, Larry, I bet most reporters have to kiss less ass than you do, you painful little boot-licker. Sheesh. Sincerely, TMU (1/24/08)

Dave, in your rant you said, "... I've always thought that John Gibson, the 5 PM anchor on Fox News, is a worthless piece of crap..." I must disagree with you. "Crap", when properly used, can be utilized to fertilize the soil in order to grow food to feed hungry people, grow vegetation to reduce erosion and convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, and in our nation's westward expansion provided heat for cooking and comfort to the pioneers. (Ever hear of "prairie coal"?) John Gibson, OTOH is totally consistent with just about everything else on the Fox Network: Totally Useless! -Unsigned Corporate Suit (1/24/08)

Dave's response: John Gibson gets a gleam in his eyes each time (almost every day) he gets to lead his show with the disappearance of a beautiful young white woman somewhere. Unquestionably, the worst cable news anchor in the universe. Even worse than Steve Doocy.....

The Society of Pofessional Jermalists mispelt "Loudon" county in their news release promoting their award. I believe the northen Virginia county is spelled "Loudoun." Thank you. (1/24/08)

In your piece on wired cities, you say Baltimore is 5th. I highlighted this to some friends and shared it with several other people in a local online group. Then a colleague looked at the original Forbes story and it appears that Los Angles is fifth, and Baltimore is 16th. Is that right? Bill Toohey (1/24/08)

Dave's response: First, it wasn't "my" article. It was a Forbes article. And, second, Baltimore was 16th in one category but in 5th place overall. The article wasn't the clearest I've ever read.....

Madeline: Thank you so much for the WYRE memory. I hope you are doing well. Ah! The Voice of the Bay. One of the thrills traveling to my uncle's shore in Kent Island was listening to WYRE and the great personalities. Kirby Scott's dance show on WBAL was fun especially when he featured bands like the Peppermint Rainbow and Bob Brady and the Con-Chords. I wonder if any video exists from his TV show in the WBAL archives. Baby Cakes in Maui. Darn, you lucky beach bums. Freezing here in south central Virginia. Blessings. Joyce Conroy (WHFC) (1/24/08)

Did the idear for making a big push for Big D'oh and Dooks at WJFK originate in the mind of Michael Hughes? The same Hughes who thought up The Unzipped show or Peter McRosenberger and the lameness which is The Globe? Enjoyed yesterday's edition of the Dons and Mikes show. The long discussion about the Secret Handshake Club waxed nostalgic. But no mention of the recent passing of Alan Melvin. Why those jackals at TVland ran an Andy of Mayberry last night with Alan Melvin in the part of the Hotel Dick. But is TVland now running movies on Wednesday's too? I hate you TVland people. And Don even remembered to call Al Molinaro even though the idea had come up briefly several segments before. That's not like Don to remember stuff like that. What next a true analysis of the Jerry Lewis tapes? Well Mr. Molinaro's current status was neither confirmed nor denied somebody is paying the phone bill at his house if the fax is on. Yep,yep, yep! Bob of toothless fairfax. Hey Tino of Mont.Co. let's get with it. Here we are now entertain us. (1/24/08)

Dave's response: The worst cable TV sin is BBC America running "Dancing With The Stars," an American show. In fact, I complained and got this.....

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We realize this may not be a typical move for the channel, but "Dancing with the Stars" is actually closer to the BBC family than you might think. "Dancing with the Stars" is produced by BBC Worldwide America and is based on the BBC hit show "Strictly Come Dancing." Please be assured that we do value your suggestions, and will take them into consideration in the future. Once again, thank you for your e-mail. Regards, Irene, Viewer Relations, BBC America

Dave: Check out this picture. It's at WYRE, Annapolis in the mid 70s. It's taken in the newsroom at WYRE. The newsroom was also the Xmitter room. If you leaned back in your chair while writing a newscast you knocked the station off of the air! Anyway, L to R, me (at the time Madelaine Waltjen on the NewsWYRE), Jennifer Wagner (my best friend from high school. got her a job on air at WYRE), Chris Saunders (in rear...he was at WCBM and later was huge in San Diego TV news. He was asst. ND at WYRE), Pat Nason (ND...now at UPI, LA) and Howard Dicus (in bowtie!!...now in TV news in Hawaii). Kerby Scott, our GM and Baltimore TV/radio legend, saw the picture and emailed all of us from the beach in Maui. Kerby turns 67 tomorrow! Wow, I feel so damn old! Madelaine (1/24/08)

Best regards, Carol (1/24/08)

To the poster that thinks because I recited the station and talent in the new commercial to promote Tony K…Don’t get to excited. I do this for a living. Don’t expect the masses to pick up on the same thing. In fact, you can expect 3WT to be a perennial 1 share at best. (1/24/08)

(regarding your News Item) "The man with the flowers was later identified as teenage actor George Harris." If you want to see a completely different side of George Harris, check out the 2002 documentary, 'The Cockettes'. It's about the gender-bending San Francisco performance group who became a pop culture phenomenon in the early 1970s. Harris heads up the group as Hibiscus. Baltimore director, John Waters, describes them as "insane hippie drag queens on and off the stage". www.grandelusion.com (1/24/08)

How is it that you constantly warn people who continue on with off-topic threads (and rightfully so) and yet you feature news of the closing of black owned bookstore? What does that have to do with local radio or television? (1/24/08)

Dave's response: DCRTV is local radio, TV, and media. See the banner on the top of our front page. Books are "media." Get it?

CBS TV's cable owned network SHOWTIME plans to air a "sanitized" version of their highly rated and extremely successful police drama thriller DEXTER. The edited series starts in a few weeks on the regular CBS TV network. Michael Hall (Six Feet Under) plays the role of police blood analysis expert DEXTER and steals the 50 minute show. By cutting this Golden Globe nominated series would be a crime. Michael Hall is supported by an outstanding cast and the writing is first class. When the season finale aired a few weeks ago, DEXTER was at its height of excellent cable tv. Thanks, Jack Edwards (1/24/08)

Dave's response: "Dexter" is a wonderful show. In fact, he's my role model.....

Turned on the radio while cleaning the kitchen last night and there was Bram Weinstein on 94.3 FM screaming and hollering about how "insane" it was for the Redskins to be making Jim Fassel their head coach. "It is literally insane," Weinstein said, and he claimed that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is so "beloved by all Redskins fans" that "nobody will buy season tickets" if Williams doesn't get the job. This went on for the 5 or 10 minutes it took me to do the dishes. Then I went in the living room, turned on ESPN on TV and, lo and behold, their crawl reported that the Redskins had NOT offered the job to Fassel. And this morning, the story remains the same. Could it possibly be that Weinstein and 94.3, who were scooped by an AP beat reporter and the rest of the world when Joe Gibbs quit, are jumping the gun just a bit too much in an effort to be first with the new hire, whenever that may come? You'd think that being "Redskins Radio," beholden only to Danny Snyder and broadcasting some of their daily crap from the lobby at Redskin Park they would be able to get it straight every once in a while. Hey, pay attention to the shows before you rag on the hosts. Chad did NOT bring a regular gun into the studio yesterday, he brought a bb type gun. Yeah, you could put your eye out. (1/24/08)

When (Chad Dukes) brings his shiny new gun into the WJFK studio to show his friends, are we to assume that CBS now encourages its employees to bring firearms into the workplace? I realize that Dukes has a naked picture of him holding his gun on his Myspace page (you really couldn't make shit like that up!), but does he have to bring it to work? And what the hell are CBS thinking? Don't they remember Virginia Tech? ... CBS should dump this irresponsible ass! Rich (1/24/08)

THE NEW HIP HOP COFFEE SHOP ON OC104 (103.9) ARE MAKING NOISE AGAIN ON DELMARVA.....THIS MORNING AT 7AM BILL BAKER, JESSICA, AND CROOKIDD WENT ON THE AIR AND ANNOUNCED THAT AFTER MEETINGS ALL DAY YESTERDAY THAT MANAGEMENT AT GREAT SCOTT BROADCASTING FOUND THAT IT WOULD BE IN THE BEST INTEREST IF THEY WOULD NO LONGER PLAY HIP HOP AND R&B MUSIC. THEN THEY WENT INTO "SHOW TUNES" FOR 30 MIN LISTENERS CALLED, E-MAILED, POSTED COMMENTS ON THEIR MYSPACE, ETC ETC. THEN THEY CAME BACK ON THE AIR AND SAID JUST LIKE THE "WHOPPER FREAK OUT" THAT BURGER KING DID WHEN THEY TOOK AWAY THE WHOPPER FOR A DAY....THEY DID THE "HIP HOP AND R&B FREAK OUT" TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THEY TOOK AWAY THE HIP HOP AND R&B. AND IT WORKED!! (1/24/08)

Humm....ref: comment on Kornheiser spot. It's only been on a handful of times so far but the writer noticed the spot, recited the Arbitron slogan, 3WT and knew the name of the talent promoted. Hummm....... (1/24/08)

I can't explain why or even if Radio One is running Hybrid Digital signals in other cities, but from where I'm sitting the half-assed digital radio system appears to be a total bust. I was wandering around Best Buy this week because I had a gift card to spend, and they had a grand total of ONE HD radio for sale, an _ugly_ thing from Sony that couldn't even find a digital station to play (and didn't have the decency to stop scanning and admit there were no digital signals). No radios = no listeners, so why bother screwing up analog reception? Oh, yeah, the other name for the system, I Block Other Channels. I wish whoever owns WCAO/600 in Baltimore would turn off the digital crap that I have to fight my way through whenever I want to listen to WHP/580. This is worse than the AM Stereo situation was--AM Stereo turned out to be a waste of time and money for the broadcasters too, but at least they didn't ruin reception of other stations while they were playing with something nobody listened to. (1/24/08)

After less than a week on the air, Ripley is not on the air this morning at 97.7 The Rocket, did his bad attitude and disregard for the listeners get him ousted after only 4 shows? Dean in SOMD (1/24/08)

Dave's response: Whenever I hear the name "Ripley" I think of Sigorney Weaver. Hmmm.....

"Dave, credit where credit is due. triple x, the times, and the washington post were smoked in this fassel for redskins' coach-thing by sportstalk 980." Indeed they were. As they were also smoked by 980 some time back 'breaking' an Orioles trade that ALSO hasn't happened yet to my knowledge. If they were news, I'd half expect a 'Hillary has secured the nomination' announcement today on 980. In news you learn that being right eventually, if you are that lucky, doesn't constitute 'breaking' the story. The story has to actually HAPPEN first. The Post.com is the only good source of breaking info on this story. (1/24/08)

Did any one see the 3WT commercial to promote the Tony K show? They missed the point. Kornheiser has had ratings success in the past in Washington so the focus should be what station he is now on, and the dial position, instead of the fake laughter in the background from his sidekicks. On a related note, is it just me, or has Tony not jumped the shark? He is kind of a cross between a bad Woody Allen and a bad Seinfeld. The time has come for Kornheiser to just play golf, and hang out at the Palm. (1/24/08)

Dave's response: Korny's gonna kill in the "55-death" demo.....

How come Radio One has their HD signals on most of their markets, even some of the AMs, but none of their DC stations have the HD on? I know Magic had their HD on at one point. Why was it turned off? And Praise doesnt count because it's still owned by Bonneville and they put the HD on before the sale. (1/24/08)

Dave's response: Even with a full-power analog signal, the piggyback digital HD Radio signal is lucky to get out more than 10 or 15 miles from the transmitter. WMMJ is a regional signal on 102.3, with much less power. Its HD Radio signal would be lucky to make it to the Beltway. In fact, I had great difficulty receiving it here in Reston when MMJ was running it.....

Regis Philbin said several years ago that (NYC's) K-ROCK should become K_COUNTRY---perhaps CBS finally came to the conclusion that country is the way to go.FRESH, the new "cbs-fm" and a country 92.3 will keep 'ltw's ratings down!!!! The departure of (WLTW's) Jim Ryan and his former djs has left lite open to any type of competition. JOE BENJAMIN (1/24/08)

Okay, Czaben is a total blowhard, but at least he was the first to put the name Jim Fasell into the mix about a full week before anybody else. I guess even Mr. Loud Wrong can be right twice a day like a busted clock. What is really hilarious, is how XXX, your "Inside" Redskins source had the following exchange between Bram and Larry on Thursday. Bram: "So, do you know who it is going to be Larry?" Larry: "No I don't, when they want to let us know, they will let us know." Wow. Good stuff. Keep us posted, Mr. House Man. (1/24/08)

Seems that the Shenandoah Valley's WHSV is really beefing up their TV3 Winchester. Within the last two weeks alone not only did TV3 Winchester expand their evening news by 30 minutes plus they added a full hour of local news in the morning called "Good Morning Winchester" plus the channel now has a radio partner, that being Winchester's Q102. I was checking out the TV3 Winchester site and I noticed in one of the staff blogs that says that TV3 Winchester will soon start airing their own syndicated fare rather than simply rebroadcasting the same syndicated fare that Harrisonburg's WHSV airs like Oprah and Jeopardy. And if all that expansion isn't enough, there is a rumor going around Winchester that TV3 Winchester will soon be able to do "LIVE" newports on location to put them in the same league as Hagerstown's NBC 25 and of course the DC and Baltimore stations. What's next? A chopper for TV3 Winchester? While I wish them ( TV3 Winchester ) well, I have to question the wisdom of all this expansion. First of all I have yet to hear about the number of viewers that channel gets. Right now TV3 Winchester is only available on local Comcast cable and those who have HDTV but in an area where so many local viewers have either Dish Network or Direct TVand since TV3 Winchester isn't availble on those services ( I heard it is due to WJLA ) I can't imagine they have that many viewers. My sister works at Shenandoah University ( TV3 Winchester's partner ) and she was telling me not that long ago that the channel was having a problem with the commmunity as far as those taking their channel seriously. In other words, local viewers still would rather watch the Washington stations and get their weather from WINC's Barry Lee not from some woman who acts like Winchester's answer to Rachel Ray. The Winchester Star newspaper I heard isn't exactly a fan and neither is WINC-FM then again considering TV3's partnership with Q102, that latter is not a suprise. Do they have viewers outside of the Winchester-Front Royal area since TV3 Winchester is available OTA to those with HDTV? What sydicated shows could TV3 Winchester possibly get? And whatever happened to the "idea" of moving Winchester into the Harrisonburg DMA? With so many issues and such, I see shades of the old WYVN ( the defunct Martinsburg WV FOX station ) here. Too much expansion and too soon. (1/24/08)

"Well, saying "Xerox Suit Joins Post Board" is just as sexist, in putting a male spin on the headline. Right?" Wrong. See Hillary and Ellen as they both wear suits. Well never mind then. I just proved your point. Paul G (1/24/08)

Dave's response: And some men wear skirts (and womens' panties).....

Regarding Powers' WEAA/Governor lawsuit: I hope he wins or at least drags O'Malley & Morgan State through the mud in legal discovery. Even O'Malley's friends know he's a "get-even with your enemies" childish prick of the highest order and even his own relatives told The Washington Post he was cheating on his wife. But, I just love when he does that phony squinty eyed searing anger and indignation look in front of TV cameras to intimidate local reporters (and it seems to work). It's so phony and obvious that it's right out of the Clinton play book, but the local media here just doesn't care. Boy did Marylanders make a big mistake and they seem to know it already as the polls even show it (but you won't hear the Post or the Sun admit it, those polls just keep getting buried deeper and deeper). O'Malley makes Republican dirty tricks look like kids stuff. Because Maryland is such a corrupt one-party state. Hello! How could any credible newspaper like The Post or The Sun believe or honestly promote the idea that there is some "vast right wing conspiracy" in Maryland! DUH! The Repubs are like the gang that can't shoot straight in Maryland! The hypocrisy in the local media is unconscionable considering the Dems held public hearings that were all over the local news criticizing Repubs for firing Democrats and what TV station is covering this Powers story? I haven't seen anything. It's like the media, the Dems, & the special interest nutjob groups are all in bed together in a tasteless partisan orgy of lies. Who's "Uncle Tom" now? Michael Steele or Morgan State University? Gee, you'd be hard pressed to determine a winner in that battle now, wouldn't you? Welcome to the USSM ( United Socialist State of Maryland ) ! And watch out for the Maryland Democratic Party's KGB if you like your job! (1/24/08)

Dave, credit where credit is due. triple x, the times, and the washington post were smoked in this fassel for redskins' coach-thing by sportstalk 980. yes, i've noticed the hockey thread stuff of late and the czaban/pollin 'serious' talk complaints, but wtem blew the rest of the outlets, tv included, away. comcast has a beat reporter, and triple x has one, too -- they were both left in the dust and should be ashamed of themselves. aren't both the 'official' whatevers of the redskins? funnier still is i noticed scott lynn in the noon hour on wtem running with the story...nobody else had it for hours, and lynn didn't cite the tem reporter, jerry coleman in his updates. you mean to tell me that 980 did this without their reporter? hysterical. i can't wait to read how jim williams gives kudos to the whole media corps. sickening. (1/23/08)

What is it with guys named Peterson offing their wives. First there was Scott Peterson in California, now this cop in Illinois... Porter Jervis (1/23/08)

Dave's response: Should Gordon Peterson's wife be nervous? Nah, just jooooooking.....

This has been puzzling me for awhile, so I thought I would ask the expert. I listen to what used to be Washington Post Radio on Frederick 820 AM. The station rarely refers to this frequency in its self-promotion. Do you think that it might be sold? I wonder about this because 2 of their programs are also heard on Frederick's WFMD. Just wondering... I'd hate to have to start podcasting Mr. T! (1/23/08)

(RE: Bob Gneiser's Memorial service) Dave - Thanks for posting the notice on "Uncle Rogert's" ( as we use to call him as kids back in the '60s) upcoming service. My sister told me that at least 2 people who worked with Bob, including a station boss, have asked to speak at his service! So all is covered for Saturday. Thanks again for your assistance. Keep up the good work! - Rick Taylor (1/23/08)

Dave's response: Thanks Rick. Give my well wishes to all of Bob's family and friends. I remember his days on WMAL. One of the best.....

Look at it this way, Pollin and Czaban make no pretense of being a serious sports show. They know they are goofballs and don't pretend to be able to analyze anything. People like Walker, Mitchell, Thompson and Koken, on the other hand, act like they are sports gurus when they are basically know nothing nitwits. Of the choices available, I'll take Pollin and Czaban. (1/23/08)

Dear DCRTV.com I noticed on January 18th the same day you ran an item about Chris Matthews’ apology for his ‘sexist rant’ that you had a headline for another item just below : “Xerox Skirt Joins Post Board”, in reference to Anne Mulcahy, the Xerox exec. As my co-worker said, ‘Pot, have you met Kettle?’ (1/23/08)

Dave's response: Well, saying "Xerox Suit Joins Post Board" is just as sexist, in putting a male spin on the headline. Right?

"....Now that Citadel owns WJZY....." That would certainly explain the drop in ratings. But this poster makes a valid point. The last time I saw a ratings plunge like this was before the upheaval at WBIG. I cannot believe that Citadel will put up with this. WGOW in Chattanooga made big changes when they had ratings problems. WGOW is also owned by Citadel. (1/23/08)

I'm hearing that OC104 here on the eastern shore is running "Major Announcement" and something about a change at 7am tomorrow morning......... (1/23/08)

Geez, you'd think Diamond's kid went to an Elliot bash and was handed a joint. Now THAT would be inappropriate. But did any of you actually LOOK at the Jack Diamond photos? It's a crowd of Mix 107.3 listeners! I don't think a bunch of middle-aged housewives swaying back and forth are gonna hurt the kid. Not that I have anything against middle-aged housewives. I'm just saying, when did they become a demo to protect kids from? -Jeff, Springfield (1/23/08)

Dave's response: While walking across a parking lot, ever almost get run over by a middle-aged housewife driving an SUV or mini-van? They can be mighty dangerous.....

Actually, my parents never took me to an adult New Years Eve party at a hotel downtown when I was seven years old. They never allowed me to be around 1000+ adults drinking and fawning at each other past midnight when I was the only kid in the room. My parents had the good sense when I was seven to hire a babysitter if they went out to an event like that. As the parent of two young boys, I know what is best for my boys, and watching 1000 + adults get drunk is not on that particular list. On the other hand, getting them to bed by 8:30 PM is healthy for the body and the brain. I can't imagine anyone telling me dragging a kid off to an adult New Years Eve party, forcing him to stay up extremely late, and allowing the kid to witness 1000+ people drinking themselves silly while daddy plays bad Jimmy Buffet covers loudly on stage, is a good thing for a seven year old boy. Yes, at this point I am questioning Harvey's parenting skills, and would ask him once again, "You are a semi famous person, you live in the area, you have a seven year old son, you make a lot of money; why in the world did you post pictures of your seven year old son on the internet?" Does Mike post his girls' pictures, does Chris Core post pictures of Tabitha, Did Don ever publish pictures of Bart, Does Fred Grandy post pictures of his daughter Ying Lau" (sp)? The answer is "NO, and they don't for a good reason." Harvey needs to put the best interest of his kid first; I know its hard, Harvey, and maybe a little harder for you because of your age, but seriously man, do the right thing for your kid. (1/23/08)

Dave's response: When I was about 8 or 9, my best friend's mother smuggled me and him into a drive-in to see "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice," which was an R-rated movie. When we went back to the snack bar for some hotdogs, the attendant wondered what we "little boys" were doing at such an adult film. I've never forgotten Dyan Cannon.....

“Mike Francesa and Chris Russo on WFAN in New York are certainly entertaining, but when push comes to shove they do provide insightful analysis. If it's not the Redskins or Maryland basketball, Czaban and Pollin can't pull it off” – WTEM’s Sports Reporters has become more of an entertainment show after the Skins are discussed. Why do they have a “Movie Guy” every Friday? I feel like they want to be the show that men listen too to talk about guy things, such as when Czaban goes off topic or brings up something gambling related. Other than breaking down the NFL, I don’t believe they could honestly break down a Wizards or Caps game (mainly because they are disinterested) who both are on a roll right now. Also, the Doc Walker show is unlistenable and his “locker room” shtick is a joke. (1/23/08)

I thought Don Geronimo would like to read this-Pia... Suspect In Wife's Disappearance Agrees To Play 'Dating Game' On Steve Dahl's Radio Show... CHICAGO (CBS)... Drew Peterson, whose fourth wife has been missing for months, is apparently looking for a date. Peterson has agreed to participate in a "Drew Peterson Dating Game'' segment on legendary radio talker Steve Dahl's morning show. Dahl has been lampooning Peterson for months and the former suburban police sergeant called into the show on 104.3 JACK-FM this morning. During the conversation, Peterson agreed to participate in a "Win A Date With Drew'' contest tomorrow on the air. CBS 2 called Peterson, who confirmed that he's planning on doing the show. While Dahl has agreed to do the segment, it remains unclear whether Peterson and his attorney, Joel Brodsky will actually go through with the idea. Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy, disappeared last fall. His third wife, Kathleen Savio, was found dead in a bathtub. Investigators consider Drew a suspect in Stacy Peterson's disappearance and they have re-opened an investigation into Savio's death. The former Bolingbrook police sergeant has been the center of a media firestorm since his wife went missing. While he insists that he wants the media to leave him alone, he continues to court publicity. Stacy Peterson hasn't been seen since Oct. 28 when her husband says she left him for another man. He has introduced what he claims is evidence that is what happened, most recently a racy text message Stacy Peterson received on her cell phone about a month before she disappeared. Stacy Peterson's family says she did not leave her family, and Illinois State Police say Drew Peterson remains their suspect in the disappearance. State Police issued a statement saying "it is apparent that Stacy did not voluntarily cease all contact with her children, family and friends." (1/23/08)

It's been a while since your erstwhile dj has weighed in on local matters: LFOL!! Mikey Sorce's sidekick poops himself (Can that be true? And if so, WTF is "K/Carla" thinking? "He's a diamond in the rough..."?), and speaking of Diamonds, JD's drinking buddy is seven years old? Both are stellar representatives of the Metro DC radio community!! O&A bite the dust, Waaaaaah - **NOT**. There was a detailed, spot on analysis of the boys weaknesses posted here earlier - the question is: Why did it take M. Hughes @ JFK so long to pull the plug? Assuming he really calls any of the shots @ trainwreck-JFK. Anyhoo, here's a bold proposal to revive the O&A show: "Promote" Dopey Opie Hughes to co-board op with Black Earl Douglas, put Ronnie Bennington in the Captain's Chair, add Fezzie, Ant, and Norton and you've got radio gold I tell you!! Finally, having escaped the bonds of Comcast tyranny, I'd like to suggest Dish Network as a good alternative: WHAG (NBC national news .5 hour earlier), IFC, Family (UFO/Thunderbirds), Filmfest, and all of the "mature" programming you can handle @ $11.99 a pop - and I do mean "pop"....dapjdjenvasezadiosona!! (1/23/08)

Hey, since when has DCRTV become a Parental Guidance site? This is a radio site. I know lot’s of you hate Jack Diamond, but there’s a limit to what you should criticize doncha think? I mean if the kid was boozing or doing something outrageous that might spark some debate. How many of you when you were a child were present at your parents New Years Eve bash? I know I was and it had no affect on my future. A late night as a youngster is not an unusual event..weekends as a child I was always up late. My folks were leaving me home alone when I was fairly young. Come on back to the business at hand. BOBB (1/23/08)

Now that Citadel owns WJZY, don't you think the time is right for some kind of management shakeup? The last ratings book was a disaster. (1/23/08)

Dave's response: It's WJZW.....

Why is Tony Kornheiser on TV and radio? Who thinks this guy is entertaining, in any way, shape or form? I just caught two minutes of him on 'Redskin Radio,' (itself a waste of air) and he was talking about Mark Russell, who Kornheiser called "hilarious...much better than Rich Little." What a disaster. (1/23/08)

Today's (1/23) linked article about WJFK has a mistake--it says XM devotes a whole channel to Opie and Anthony. They obviously are forgetting Ron and Fez's 3 hours from 12 to 3. It's a shame that they forgot a show that was on in DC for many years, and is so linked to the area that Fez wants to be buried in Northern Virginia. Also you say the article is in the Post and the link is to the Times. Unless you did that on purpose... -Pepperjack (1/23/08)

Dave's response: You mean to tell me that an article in the Washington Times is not 100 percent accurate? Oh my God.....

You’d think the local sports radio shows and other media outlets would embrace the excitement that’s surrounding the caps right now. When was the last time this franchise was relevant? They got the biggest young star in the game (who leads the league in goals) a great young assist man in backstrom and other young stars such as alex semin and mike green. At least give it some of your attention, it’s a lot better then NBA, skins coaching talk, or terps hoops. (1/23/08)

Hey Big Don O'Brien-I just played a commercial with your voice in it for Giant GMC in Federalsburg hon. Federalsburg, the gateway to Essex, oh no that's Dundalk, sorry-wrong decade and side of the bridge, lol. Hey, everytime I play David Lee Roth's-'Ain't Got Nobody' during my 12 O'Clock Whatever, I send it out to you and Brian Wilson. I was able to capture the "Amazing FM" clip from one of the old clips you guys played on your reunion show on WQSR and I ocasionally use as a drop-in during my show. Thanks to Brian Wilson, when I play the Lido Shuffle, I sometimes say 'Hey Liidddoooo Man! Ahh the good ole' days of radio, thanks for the memories. -Michael Popovec (1/23/08)

"As for the complaints about Pollin and Czaban, I think people are missing the point. I've had my problems with both of them too, but then I realized that you just don't listen to that show if you want intelligent sports discussion. You listen if you want to be entertained. Czaban, in particular, is bombastic, quick witted and pretty entertaining. Pollin is the straight man. But intelligent sports analysis, forget it. For example, this was their discussion yesterday of the Capitals' recent surge in the standings. Pollin made a comment about how 'Bob' Boudreau, the new coach, had really turned things around. Then Czaban pointed out that his first name was really Bruce, which it is. Then Pollin went on about how Boudreau looked more like someone who should be doing your taxes than a coach. That was it. No comments whatsoever about why Boudreau was able to turn things around, which players are leading the surge or what the team's playoff prospects look like. Again, if you are tuning into Sports Reporters for insightful analysis you will be constantly disappointed. If you lighten up and just listen to the show for what it is, you'll at least get a few laughs." That would be OK if the show was there to provide an alternative to insightful analysis. Unfortunately, no local program of the latter type here exists, at least not on WTEM's weekday schedule (or at Triple-X, either). Mike Francesa and Chris Russo on WFAN in New York are certainly entertaining, but when push comes to shove they do provide insightful analysis. If it's not the Redskins or Maryland basketball, Czaban and Pollin can't pull it off. -- Vincent in Triangle (1/23/08)

Mike in Fairfax is correct. Shapiro's column said that WTEM's program director had said that Feldman and Maloney would return to doing Sports Reporters. So what happened? They are missed because Chris Knoche, Kevin Blackistone and Mike Wise are terrible. Thom Loverro is the franchise as far as guests on that show is concerned. As for the complaints about Pollin and Czaban, I think people are missing the point. Dave, did you hear Mike yesterday? That dude is gross. He described how he was out over the weekend, staying at a hotel with his girlfriend. He said he was eating buffet food all day and night then his girfriend told him he smelled like a shit. He later realized he had shit himself and did not even know it. He then washed his underwear in the sink and put them away in his luggage. Who sits around eating fat people food all day, then shits themselves on the couch and does not even realize it? (1/23/08)

Sorry for the Winchester chatter but that site is no more..re: The mix has never been better on 104.9...if it is why did they just come off their worst ratings since the station(s) were country? (1/23/08)

Dave's response: Gotta be the loss of all those northern Fairfax County listeners now hearing TMD on 105.5. Ha ha ha.....

Is it really a good idea for Tony K to constantly remind listeners that his show is on XM. I mean, 3WT needs every listener it can get. In a very real sense, he's hyping the competition. (1/23/08)

Wow! A hundred thousand views of the “Jack Diamond” You Tube….99, 997 from Jack and 3 from his ex wives. (1/23/08)

Dave's response: You know, DCRTV gets 100,000 page views in a couple days. It took Diamond five months to get that on YouTube? Maybe he should advertise on DCRTV. Might get his traffic up. Hmmm.....

Quite a bash last night to celebrate Charlie Brotman's 80th birthday. Les Halles was packed with over 200 of Charlie's closest friends on hand to toast Washington's legendary PR man. Among the cele Maureen Bunyan, Jim Bohannon, Chris Gordon, Johnny Holliday, Dexter Manley, Wally Bruckner, Bernie Smilovitz, Tom Sherwood, John Harter, Bret Haber and another broadcast legend Andy Ockershausen who handled the MC duties. It was a magical evening! Happy birthday Charlie. (1/23/08)

Dave's response: Damn! I hope that Bret Haber shows up at my birthday party next month. Erin will be there.....

I'm so happy Kornheiser's back on local radio. He's such a delightful kvetch. David Burd, bless his heart, made a valiant effort, but was surrounded by non-starters. With the exception of this 'Nigel' person. But the rest of the cast was like a lump of playdoh on the close-n-play. Tony's show is like sitting in a cozy booth at a nice deli, knoshing on bagels and coffee and giggling as the alpha mensch goes off, enchanted at the sound of his own voice. I hang on every word and make a mental note to consider patronizing the show sponsors. Does the show have sponsors? Rick (1/23/08)

Dear, dear Les in Adelphi, I'll lay claim to the initial use of Dreadskin's and Bullets in the old mailbag but I'd rather not explain why, it'll just ruin it for me. I do think we're seeing something special happening with the Bullets this year!....Is Carlos Joaquin no longer the weather anchor on Univsion Washington News edition? I miss that winking cutie patootie! Les in Adelphi would you be interested in selling one of your "Silver Sow" awards? Oh man, help me I'm on the floor with that one. Mike in Waldorf is different from Mike in Fairfax? And Unsigned Corporate Suit is different from Man in the Grey Flanneled suit? Bob from underneath the Bunnyman Bridge(i'm a troll, get it) in toothless fairfax (1/23/08)

To Mike in Fairfax….“Regarding 5's Dave Feldman, apparently he and CSN's Carol Maloney no longer have a relationship with WTEM. When Clear Channel canceled their midday radio show to make room for Dan Patrick a few months ago, I seem to recall Len Shapiro writing in the Post that they'd be returning to the guest rotation on Sports Reporters before long - but it hasn't happened.” – How do you know this for sure? I believe the Sports Reporters bring up Feldman in conversations….regarding Czaban, you are right, no one has given the Giants credit and Czaban has provided no critique of the game whatsoever, they’d rather field calls on who the next Redskins coach is going to be, I wish they would just wait and see. I can’t wait for it not to be Cowher, b/c Pollin and Czaban are adamant that it will be. Love to see them eat their words. (1/23/08)

Here is another perfect example of the local news business going down the shitter, especially with regards to a local news station who loves sensationalism. Faux5 News at Ten started their show with an "EXCLUSIVE" story about a gun at Reagan National Airport, that just about scared me off my couch. Funny, about 6:30pm this SAME evening, I saw the same "BREAKING NEWS' story on Newschannel 8. Hmmm, Faux5, you need to watch out, NC8 scooped you....oh the humanity!!! (1/23/08)

Dave's response: Good to hear from you again, Mike O'Meara.....

Is ANYONE watching the painful Channel 9 Derick McGinnty and Jennifer Lite, err... Anita Something shows? Equally painful is the 6&11. Neither new anchor shows confidence, comfort in the chair or anchor poise. It's no wonder local news is as bad as it is. The stations have themselves to blame for low viewership. (1/22/08)

Dave's response: I still think that 9 missed the boat by not hiring Morris Jones to pair with Tracey Neale. That duo was a top ratings-getter over at 5.....

Dave...From the last ratings it appears 3WT has very few listeners. Isn't it amazing that virtually all their listeners seem to write to you? Any explanation? The Fan (1/22/08)

Dave, Why is it we never hear Tony The K and Michael Savage live broadcasting at the same time? Hmmmmm… The stereotypes don’t do that guy justice. Did you hear the GoyTrack – the in-studio live laughtrack this morning? When Tony was a boy on The Island – practicing his stand up act in the folk’s rumpus room – wanna bet that his weekly allowance went to packing the cheap seats for fake laughs? How many days went by till he swindled those same nickels back. Oy. m (1/22/08)

Dear Harvey Joel Fisher, As a father of a seven year old boy, I was shocked that you have photos of your seven year old from your new years eve party on your website. Have you no sense of privacy and safety for the boy? I can't understand fathers like you who don't get the basics of being a father to a boy. PUT YOUR SEVEN YEAR OLD TO BED BY 8:30 PM EVERY NIGHT LIKE EVERY BOOK PUBLISHED ON RAISING BOYS TELLS YOU TO DO. Have your kid be as normal as possible. If he is like most seven year olds, and you are raising him correctly, he shouldn't have physically been able to stay up past 9:30 PM; so what the hell are you doing that allowed him to stay up so late on New Years Eve? Also, do you believe it was healthy to take a seven year old to an adult New Years bash where people will assuredly get sloppy drunk and stupid? I personally don't think that was a wise move, Harvey. Don't expose purposefully a seven year old to a scene like that, he is a kid for God's sake. Harvey, you need to take a parenting class or something. Maybe you are too old to be a father of a boy, because it appears you just don't get it, and your son is nothing more than a nice tag along for you. No other thinking father of a seven year old boy would do what you did on New Year's Eve. We take our parenting seriously. Perhaps you should start doing that as well and next year shell out $100.00 for a baby sitter so the kid can go to bed at a normal time like every other seven year old, and not be exposed to drunks, loud bad music, and NYE adult displays of affection. I had heard you were taking your son to bars where you had gigs, but I didn't believe it; now I have no doubt of your very odd and unthinking parenting skills. (1/22/08)

I have made a tape of Mike O'Meara's weekend doings monologue from today's show. I'll play it next time I have trouble sleeping. (1/22/08)

In response to the avid spell checker who makes MANY INCORRECT statements and assumptions about me and my "opinion" of the excessive cleavage shots during Allie's traffic reports...... 1) so I made two typos--- who cares? . 2) No, I don't like seeing it, that's my opinion and you should respect it as such because last time I checked everyone on this site is giving their opinion about something. 3) I do know Allie personally. 4) Julie Wright has commented multiple times during the broadcasts about the amount of cleavage shown. 5) "The slab of bacon ?" I think it's obvious who can't put it down 6) "Shut UP ?" that's professional.....7) I think my comment was putting the matter nicely and I notice you didn't sign your name to your post either, while we're talking anonymity. 8) I watch all the channels in the morning and I don't see any of the other women wearing such low cut shirts. Spell check that ! LB (1/22/08)

Dave's response: It's typical Washington. It doesn't matter how many protesters you have. All that matters is how much media coverage you get.....

(I've noticed the Skyfox chic Allie Oakley showing more and more cleavage during the morning traffic report. I'm sure the men like it, but it's innapropriate. She should be a bit more professional. This morning it appeared as if her bust took over the whole shot. Just a suggestion...) 1. Spell them with me: "Sky Fox." "Chick." "Inappropriate." 2. You don't like it? Change the channel. Or are you just so hungry for "American Idol" so-called news updates that you can't bring yourself to put down the slab of bacon and pick up the remote? Three other stations also offer traffic on the magic box. (Four, if you have cable and count Newschannel 8, and five if you count Fios.) 3. Which do you think is a more worthwhile venue for registering your objections? An anonymous message board, or maybe a targeted email/phone call/letter to the management at WTTG? Oh, no, it's much more fun to tear down someone you don't know anonymously and in public. Here's my suggestion: Shut up. 4. I, for one, think it's terrific that an attractive, professional woman willingly goes up in that tiny chopper in all kinds of weather, especially someone who clearly enjoys what she does. (1/22/08)

I can assure you that Kym McKay willingly fled from Centennial before they had a chance to fire her. (1/22/08)

"Nothing [on Channel 5 News last night] about the Bullets big victory and series sweep of the Dallas Mavericks, one of the NBA's elite teams yesterday afternoon or the NFL championship games or what's the latest word on a new Dreadskin's coach". Not to mention Georgetown's thrilling win over Syracuse at Verizon Center and the Capitals' overtime victory over the Penguins (a team that's been their nemesis for years). The post-football sports scene in the DC area looks very promising right now, and that includes the Terps who pulled off a shocker over previously top ranked North Carolina a few days ago. Regarding 5's Dave Feldman, apparently he and CSN's Carol Maloney no longer have a relationship with WTEM. When Clear Channel canceled their midday radio show to make room for Dan Patrick a few months ago, I seem to recall Len Shapiro writing in the Post that they'd be returning to the guest rotation on Sports Reporters before long - but it hasn't happened. Speaking of Reporters, some of the discussions on that show are marred by Steve Czaban getting on his soapbox and trying to shove his often moronic takes down the throats of Andy Pollin and whoever's the guest instead of engaging in civilized give-and-take dialogue. I think his Giants-Packers 'analysis' yesterday can be summed up by "I can't stand the Giants or their fans, so they deserve no credit for upsetting Green Bay at Lambeau Field to reach the Super Bowl." I'm sorry - listeners deserve thoughtful critiques of the NFL playoff games as opposed to someone venting his petty animosities. Three or four times over the past two weeks, I've heard Czaban refer to early season Redskin games where they were in position to win but 'Joe Gibbs screwed it up.' Enough already!!! The Skins' trying season ended up nicely with a playoff appearance, Gibbs decided to retire and the media's largely moved on. If Czaban still wants to stick it to the Hall of Fame coach over a loss to the Giants that took place four months ago, he should do so away from the microphones and stop subjecting 980's listeners to his (probably wagering related) bile and bitterness. Mike, Fairfax (1/22/08)

It's interesting that the #1 listing when WHFS is searched on google is 99.1, but I'd guess it's just something CBS failed to change. It's like how if you search fm talk 1057 it comes up as Maryland/DC area radio station playing the best Modern Rock and Alternative music. Home of the famous HFStival. Yeah that makes it sound like a talk station allright! What a good day it would be if 105.7 or 99.1 went Alt Rock. But as long as the current CBS suits remain in Washington and Baltimore the stations will still overall continue to suck. When was the last time 105.7 or 106.7 had numbers higher than 2.5 in their own markets? Or higher than a low 3 number in demos? Please Dan Mason keep ridding of the FM talkers! How about classic hits for 105.7 and Spanish for 106.7 with 99.1 back to HFS? (1/22/08)

Regarding Svrluga's jump to the Redskins beat, does that mean LaCanfora is out? I personally hope so. (1/22/08)

Hey Everyone... Someone got into my email and wrote a ridiculous email from my account and I just wanted to apologize to anyone who may have received it. Tony Kornholer is, in my honest opinion, one of THE worst broadcasters to date! On "MNF" he had about as much personality as a wet bag of flour. And while an issue of national financial importance that affects countless people takes place, he's got enough nerve to brag about his millions. What a joke... (1/22/08)

Hey Dave - Definitely take this one w/a grain of salt and that it is mere rumor and speculation BUT ... Howard was discussing on his show this AM that (NYC's) K ROCK may be switching format to country. If true, I'd say that's the death knell for your boys O&A. If you ever check www.marksfriggin.com he does a pretty exhaustive summary of the show if you want more details (it's usually posted by noon). (1/22/08)

Re: Most wired; "Baltimore ranked 5th, DC 11th." When a road rage survey was done, DC ranked 5th in the country, Baltimore 11th. So... lack of high-speed internet ticks people off?? Or does easier access to porn soothe people's nerves? (j/k, in case I need to say so) (1/22/08)

gotta hand it to tony, he totally pisses on 3t radio. does not pull his punches and is very funny in the process. i wonder if they are fuming behind the scenes??? (1/22/08)

Burning TV station - Not local, but chexk this out! www.comcast.net (1/22/08)

Actually, Baltimore as a most wired city is no surprise at all. Baltimore was home to the first long distance call and I believe still is a terminus of the Trans-Atlantic cable system. I believe AT&T cable laying & maintenance ships still call B'more home. Maryland also has been pretty active in wiring all public buildings, including schools, libraries etc. While DC has plans, B'more seems to get things done in the arena of deploying new technologies. DC unfortunately would rather talk about being the Capitol city than encourage Capital projects. Look at all the continued discussion about the not yet finished Nationals stadium,,,and Baltimore already has two. (1/22/08)

Dave's response: To be fair, Baltimore has a powerful state right there to help it out. Poor DC is an orphan in that respect.....

Re: the previous post on O&A... "these guys were the worst show offered by WJFK." ---Yeah, because the 4 hour suckfest now known as "Geronimo's whoa is me pity party" is the bastion of radio perfection.... (1/22/08)

Tony K. reminds me of the guy you meet at a cocktail party that you think is hilarious. Then you meet him again, and the act has worn very thin. The thing about Tony…he is like that in real life. He is a pain in the ass, and he complains about anything, and everything. I feel sorry for his wife, and his therapist, because they have to listen to him. (1/22/08)

AMERICA's MOST WIRED BROADBAND CITIES according to FORBES Magazine....... #5 (behind Atlanta, Seatle/Microsoft, the Raleigh, NC Research Triangle, & San Francisco/Silicon Valley)....... (drum roll please)........... ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ BALTIMORE ????????? www.forbes.com... Yep, unbelievable, but apparently it's true! Baltimore was tied for #5 with Orlando, FL, and ahead of LA, NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia (the HQ of Comcast I might add), as well as Denver, Dallas, San Diego, not to mention Washington, DC, which placed outside the Top 10, but a somewhat respectable #11 (tied with Minneapolis). DC was behind NYC, Portland, Chicago, & Charlotte, NC. Once again
