Regarding WTWP-FM. Doesn't the grandfathered (short spacing) disappear if there is a new community of license? El Zol maintains an Annapolis C of L despite the fact that they moved several miles (application granted) towards DC. They must maintain their grandfathered COL. They maintain 3.16 over Annapolis. Additionally I do not believe there were any grandfathered short spacing to second adjacency 107.3 and co-channel WGTY, Gettysburg. (8/19/07)

I greatly enjoyed Marc Fisher's celebration of Fred Fiske's fascinating career in DC radio, but I'd suggest that there were a couple of forgivable goofs in the article. Fiske's alter ego as "Skeeter Hawkins" is hardly a freshly revealed secret. A March 7, 1954 Washington Post interview with Fiske, as well as a May 9, 1977 WWDC print ad exposed that fact. And Fiske's "Capitol Hillbilly" program in the early '50s was not "Washington's first country music show". Country music had a presence on DC area radio at least as far back as the mid-1940s with such programs as WPIK's Hillbilly Mountaineers and WARL's Connie B. Gay's Radio Ranch, to name only two. (BTW, another DC-area announcer who handled both high and low brow assignments during his long broadcasting career was the well respected WTTG-TV 5 newsman Matthew Warren who moonlighted on radio as "Cactus Matt".) For a look at some random Fred Fiske items from the Washington Post over the years, visit DCMemories.com (8/19/07)

While it would probably be directional, now that 107.7 has a new COL, it could probably apply the Main Studio rule in a fashion that let's it move the transmitter location physcially to not any farther East than the Merrfield/Gallows Road tower. (8/19/07)

I'm not positive, but I think 107.7 is a grandfathered FM station, meaning it might not have the same interference rules with 107.9 as other stations would. Check with Dave Loudin for a verification. (8/19/07)

Interesting that the rumors of Washington Post Radio being on its deathbed come just a couple days after official FCC "License to Cover" approval of WTWP FM 107.7 moving (technically but not physically) to Manassas VA. I would imagine that increases the value of the station for Bonneville because they can now apply to PHYSICALLY move the station's transmitter closer to DC if they want to, not that it is guaranteed. But certainly a more interesting story now. (8/19/07)

Dave's response: How close could Bonneville move 107.7 to DC and still avoid interfering with 107.9 in Annapolis?

Not only was the Redskins game not available in Ocean City on TV, but not shown here in Denton, Caroline County. Yet according to Comcast we fall in the broadcast area, according to Comcast's so called map. Thanks for nothing, Comcast! Burt (8/19/07)

Agreed. Iron Maiden & HW3 were horrible examples but you're way off with Outkast, steveo. Stankonia-4.1 million, Speakerboxx Love-5.6 million, Aquemini-2.2 million, ATLiens-1.9 million...and that's just US Soundscan. Internationally, the totals go through the roof. Back to your Tom Jones collectibles. (8/19/07)

Sending a message to Mark Levin via WABC is disingenuous (literally). He doesn't broadcast his misinformation live from inside a WABC studio, does he? He is a local Virginia guy. Hey, the other liar, Michael Graham, was exposed for being a liar and an idiot right here on DCRTV well before he was fired from WMAL for being a liar and an idiot. I am only creating a public trail of Mr. Levin's lies or misinformation the same way we did it concerning Michael Graham. BTW, now that Karl Rove is laving the White House, do we know who will be taking over writing the Talk Points pages that are currently faxed over to WMAL twice daily? (8/19/07)

(regarding a previous post) The trumpet player on Merv Griffin's show was Jack Sheldon. He was also pals with comedian Lenny Bruce. There's more about him at his website www.jacksheldon.com (8/19/07)

Steveo, why do you change your argument on me. First you ask for quality artists and then you ask for large amount of sales. The sad thing is that you don't even know who Outkast are yet they have sold over 10 million albums and have been around since 1994. Try listening to more than oldies radio. You want longevity, Iron Maiden has been around since 1975 and has been recording since the late 1970's but you don't know who they are. Hank III or rather Hank Williams III has taken hillbilly music to a whole different level with Straight to Hell. You didn't mention Robbie Williams who is arguably the most popular artist in the world. So my statement to you is this: There is plenty of good music out there being created of all genres much better than Sgt Pepper and what they play on oldies radio and classic rock. Just try to listen. Bryslock (8/19/07)

Don and Mike---whew! instead of "porch sitting" perhaps you should amble your way to the phone, pick up your dialing wands, and call NUTRI SYSTEM fast! speed dial boys....speed dial! (8/19/07)

For the poster below, the bandleader for Merv Griffin was Mort Lindsey while the trumpter was jazz great Jack Sheldon. Lindsey & his orchestra did the original recordings for the Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy themes, as well as the Merv Griffin Show theme which can be heard as you launch the opening flash page at www.merv.com - S (8/19/07)

Comcast SportsNet did carry the Redskins game, subject to NFL territorial restrictions. Since Ocean City did not fall within the designated television territory, CSN could not air the game there. midatlantic.comcastsportsnet.com (8/19/07)

To the Mark Levin poster: There are other ways you can send your multiple messages about Levin directly to Levin himself (that is, if you have the guts) They include by mail: c/o WABC Radio, 2 Penn Plaza, 17th fl., NY, NY or by phone 877-381-3811 or by fan forum at www.marklevinfan.com (which Levin's official site has a direct link to). I still believe the "Battle of the Media Hotties" is way beneath your website, Dave…and that you should be ashamed to resort to this kind of crap. At the same time, re the latest battle…..who cares about Baltimore and anything to do with the Baltimore tv/radio scene? Perhaps you should begin a BRTV website for those who care one iota about anything to do with Baltimore. - Bob from College Park (8/19/07)

Dave's response: I've got an even better idea. Maybe I could start RTVFBFCP - Radio And TV For Bob From College Park. Just stuff you care about.....

Here is Ocean City there is no TV coverage of the Redskins-Steelers game. I thought that the Redskins games were going to be on Comcast Sports Net outside of the DC area? Matt N. (8/18/07)

Dave's response: I'm inside the DC area and getting the Skins game on both CSN and Channel 9/WUSA on my Comcast system.....

Great job by Comcast tonight. Instead of the "unable to access channel 40W access denied" message on the MASN2 channel which we had last night we get a sideways MASN symbol with an unreadable yellow script next to it on MASN1 tonight. How hard would it be to put a crawl or a message saying "Nats game on channel 20"? (8/18/07)

RE:"Iron Maiden's "A Matter of Life and Death" was a critical and commercial success. Hank III; need I say more about him? I remember a group called Outkast being critically acclaimed." HA HA HA HA! Again...I rest my case. Is THAT the best you got? Those are simply reviews which mean nothing when it comes to sales, popularity and longevity. I wanna see Iron Maiden up against The Beatles. I bet more people bought records by the 1910 Fruitgum Company than Outkast. You, Mr Bryschlock, are a LOSER! steveo (8/18/07)

Oh, so VERY young... www.youtube.com (8/18/07)

While I am a fan of WBAL I don't understand why Ron Smith continues to let people post disgusting comments on his show polls. There are constant references to "n*ggers" and other such gutter language. Here's a current posting on his poll comments: "How ''bout that Michael Vick? Typical porch monkey, isn''t he? He''s got a God given talent that makes him a fortune and he still has to break the law. It just goes to show; You can take the n*gger out of the jungble but you can''t take the jungle out of the n*gger. I''m 95 percent sure that ill behavior is genetically wired into the blood of African Americans. 8/17/2007 5:56:33 PM" - These types of posts are there all the time and leads me to believe that WBAL condones this type of crap. Disgusting. (8/18/07)

"Maybe there's nothing useful to talk about from this century. Who wants to hear about one hit rappers and singers that are created in the studio. I rest my case! steveo" Let's see what has come out recently. Iron Maiden's "A Matter of Life and Death" was a critical and commercial success. Hank III; need I say more about him? I remember a group called Outkast being critically acclaimed. Have you heard of an artist named Robbie Williams? So steveo, get a clue and stop sounding like one of these old timers. Try something new and stop living in the past blindly discounting the current music scene. Bryslock (8/18/07)

Please take the Victory Nissan commercials off the air. The woman is waaay too hyper and the guy is so boring. And I'm wondering if they even have a scrip or are ad-libbing. The woman barely lets the guy speak. But then again, when he does, he seems to be struggling. The one I saw this morning had the woman rambling on and on and the guy trying to get a word in. He finally said "Are you going to let me tell it?"..Her repsonse was that she was so excited. Probably more of "You're too slow and boring to get the info out there".. (8/18/07)

For the person who wanted to know when the monthly ratings come out - the trends will be out next Wed, 8/22. (8/18/07)

Word on the street is that the Centennial - Mid Atlantic deal is collapsing due to financing and or FCC problems. (8/18/07)

Dear Bryslock: Maybe there's nothing useful to talk about from this century. Who wants to hear about one hit rappers and singers that are created in the studio. I rest my case! steveo (8/18/07)

Don and Mike Porch-sitting on CBS Evening News: Way back in the early 1970's, Mac McGarry did his WMAL radio show from the transmitter site. There was an old house there, and the engineer ran a mike out the kitchen window, while Mac sat in a lawn chair outside. One Sunday, a friend of mine and I drove out there, and Mac invited us to stay for the show. Al McGilvray, TalkRadio WRNR 740AM (8/18/07)

On Friday's "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric", WJFK's Don & Mike were featured - sitting on the porch. Is this a preview of what they've got planned for their retirement years? www.cbsnews.com (8/18/07)

Dave's response: They mentioned on their show earlier this week that a news crew was taping them. It's that new CBS "synergy." Cross-promoting a CBS Radio show on the "CBS News." I'm sure it'll be a big boost to both the ratings of Katie Couric and WJFK-FM. Gawd. And, technically, that's not a porch but a sidewalk out front of their studio in a Rockville office park. Oh, that WJFK-FM sign in the bushes - nice touch.....

"A timely question. According to the Washington Star's Area Disc Jockey Top Ten List for Saturday August 10, 1968, Six Man Band was a predicted hit on both WEAM and WPGC." Timely? Only if you havbe been frozen for over 29 years. These useless trivia questions are pathetic. Why not talk about something from this century. Bryslock (8/18/07)

Dave, WGAR 1220 went Oldies in the fall of 1970. It was called "THE GREAT ALTERNATIVE" . There were some new songs played. As the late 70's and early 80's arrived, the station seemed to play more newer stuff. In the Spring of 1984. it joined its sister station WGAR-FM and went country, shortly after 14K WHK went Solid Gold Rockn Roll at 1420 AM. Some of WGAR DJ's were: Chuck Collier, Bob Vernon (Vernon with a "V"), Norm N. Nite, Tom Barney. - Dave from Buffalo (8/18/07)

I remember our day on the air on WCAO when Elvis died. Of course, we played the music, but we also opened the phones and the calls poured in from fans that were superbly eloquent with their personal recollections and grief. We just let them talk and they were much more eloquent than we could have ever been. A pizza joint on Wilkens Avenue sent over a deep-dish pie with “Elvis” spelled out in pepperoni slices. It was a thing of rare beauty. Bill Worthington (8/18/07)

Dave, Do you normally print the monthly ratings book for the DC area? When does that normally come out? Thanks. Adam (8/17/07)

Dave's response: Past DC and Baltimore area monthly radio ratings can be found in DCRTV's News Archive. Ratings firm Arbitron releases monthly "trends" called Arbitrends, and quarterly "books" (spring, summer, winter, fall), which are used to set ad rates at stations. You can also find the overall age 12+ numbers for the past year or so at radioandrecords.com. Click on the "ratings" tab.....

Please dear God make it stop with the substitute hosts! David A is not a talk show host. He’s a sports hack who calls into to Tony’s show. He is not in-studio material, or part of the crew. I like what Burd has done with the show while keeping Mr. Tony’s seat hot for him. When is Burd back from vacation? You just might have a point: These subs for Burd/Tony are driving me to listen to Core. Which is like watching a cake rise! Slow, real slow. If David A is back next week hosting I just may put in a Millie Vanilla CD at 8:30. (8/17/07)

To Ed Jones, yes the Association's "Six Man Band" did indeed receive some documented local airplay. A timely question. According to the Washington Star's Area Disc Jockey Top Ten List for Saturday August 10, 1968, Six Man Band was a predicted hit on both WEAM and WPGC. About a month later it reached #9 on WYRE a few spots behind "Take Me To The Love-in" by Bob Brady and the Conchords. - Jack in Falls Church (8/17/07)

Sorry, John Allen, but you're wrong. I'm no radio veteran, but just used to listen to a lot of radio back in the day. I'd always listen to the Beach, and then to other stations in markets big and small as I traveled around, and wondered how come the Beach were always the last to play new music, had the most predictable playlist, and, for the most part, the least interesting jocks. Who knows what 96 Rock plays? Their sound is so trebly, you almost can't tell what song's playing half the time, and they've always relied on Don and Mike as their big selling point. K.M. (8/17/07)

Someone just called up Czaban on Sports Reporters and said that they should be talking about Michael Wilbon being a mouthpiece for the Thompsons. Czaban categorically said they wouldn't talk about that. It seems like the Whitlock column has ignited something and a coverup at WTEM is in full gear. (8/17/07)

Dave, why do you have such a giant case of Priapism for Bonneville? Or is is just Washington Post Radio? You are starting to sound like a broken record. Is it because they beat your boys Andy and Grandy? (8/17/07)

Dave's response: "Fenian179," you send me the same message almost every week. And you're calling me a broken record?

Roddy, I remember being called back to WASH the day of Elvis' death by program director, Bob Hughes. I was playing tennis that afternoon at Landon school in Bethesda. In this era before cell phones, I was tracked down by Lowell Davis who ran the tennis courts. He told me my boss was on the phone and I had to get back to the station because Elvis had died. I went back to 5151 Wisconsin and we quickly went into Elvis mode during the John Bodnar show and well into the night. The following sunday, we did a 6 hour Elvis tribute on the "Sunday Night Thing of the Past" with listener call-ins, old Elvis interviews and the "King's" music. The call-ins were emotional, to say the least, as many of them were fans who had seen him in the area not too long before. BD (8/17/07)

Comparing Murph to Stern...??? I'm the Howard Stern of Delmarva radio...hoo hoo, tell em Robin.I invented radio on delmarva..hoo hoo. (8/17/07)

Dave - Please accept my apologies for my message about WV that was posted earlier today. I was surprised to see it appear since I thought I sent it over a year ago. At that time, it was in response to someone mentioning WV in a post and your reference to WV as "Hillbilly Haven. At the time I sent it, I was having problems with my Outlook program but didn't know it until shortly thereafter when I realized my messages were not being delivered. I finally switched from dial up to DSL and suddenly Outlook starting working again yesterday and my unsent messages apparently were finally delivered. In any case, the reference is over a year old and no longer relevant. I do enjoy your website and to make amends, I will mail you a check next week... Sherry in WV (8/17/07)

Dave's response: Thanks!

Thanks for posting the Whitlock article. It proves alot about Thompson and Wilbon that I have long suspected. (8/17/07)

Does anyone know who does the Jack Kent Cooke impression on the John Riggins Show? It is hysterical and one of the better bits going. (8/17/07)

Dave's response: I hear that Mike O'Meara phones them in while pretending to be on bathroom breaks during ad breaks on the Don and Mike show. By the way, O'Meara deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for his Karl Rove impersonation. Hysterical.....

Pollin is MORE than half of the problem. Czaban is arrogant, bombastic and xenophobic, but at least he's entertaining. Pollin is condascending, clueless, xenophobic and BORING. He's the dictionary definition of "dead wood." Leonsis is right about these clowns. (8/17/07)

Does anyone know if WMAL runs the same commercials on their web stream as they do over the air? I am so God damn tired of those Tahiti Village/Tanya Roberts commercials, to the point that I want to give her the high roller treatment baby, and not in a pleasant spot. Time to look for another web stream for Rush's show, baby. (8/17/07)

Dave's response: I listened to a few minutes of Rush on MAL radio today and heard an ad for a product that claims to cure exema in dogs. Seriously. Man, really prominent sponsors flock to his show.....

"There's no way Pollin would allow any of this garbage to go over the airwaves while he's sitting in the driver's seat, and thankfully he returns this Monday." While I agree with most of what you are saying re: Czabe, I never thought I'd ever hear someone say they are thankful Pollin will be returning, he 1/2 of the problem. (8/17/07)

Tom in Denton, You are correct. Jack Edwards did a 5 hour tribute to Elvis on WCBM the night of the King's death. Bob Mathers has the first hour of that night up on ultimate oldies radio.com. je salisbury (8/17/07)

As if the Rome show was not bad enough, but who in the hell is this LOUD as all hell blowhard guest hosting his show today (Friday)? Why in God's name is this clown YELLING all the time?!?!?!? Stop yelling..if I want it loud...I'll turn my volume button in a clockwise direction! (8/17/07)

Come on Dave Hughes. I've been reading your website dcrtv.com for years for insight into local TV and radio, enjoying and learning much in the process, but your constant Washington Post radio bashing has grown tedious. You come off as petulant and whiny. I have been a regular listener to WTWP since they first aired, giving up my NPR addiction to do so. I have also subscribed to the Washington Post since I was old enough to do so, which likely leads me to be more forgiving than some. An avid Tony Kornheiser fan from the days when he used to take phone calls, I thought he set a template for successful 'talkertainment' radio for the Post to follow and I believe it is working. While the stations launch was admittedly shaky, I have stayed with them and seen remarkable (if incremental) improvement, which is starting to manifest in the ratings. I have always respected you, Dave, for the depth and breadth of your knowledge about local media, but as your vitriol toward WTWP grows more vociferous and irrational, I am forced to wonder what the subtext of your distaste for all things WaPo might be. I used to listen to a variety of morning radio shows, Howard Stern (when he was local), Cathy Hughes (when she was still a talker), Doug Gilmore at 'HUR, Tom Joyner, Donny Simpson, and even Harden and Weaver on occasion (before 'MAL went so far to the right as to become un-listenable). And of course, I have enjoyed Tony Kornheiser through all his radio iterations. Throughout I have always awakened to NPR and "Morning Edition," and continue to do so (catching up on what I miss via NPR podcasts to my iPod) Washington Post radio is a work in progress, but I am immensely enjoying the morning programming, even David Burd's stewardship in Tony's MNF absence. And David Aldridge has been an excellent sub for David Burd, erudite, with a dry sense of humor and a razor sharp wit. He deserves to have his own show, IMHO. I have to point out that one of the things that has separated the WTWP morning shows from everyone else's is the ethnic and gender diversity of the cast of characters, which David Burd has had the good sense to maintain. That and the emphasis on cast members and guests who write for a living, bringing a level of intelligence and wit that is lacking in the usual talk show universe (not to mention an even-handedness that is especially lacking in the ideology-fed talk show world). I also like the concept of a rotating cast of regulars, which helps keep things fresh and lively. It's okay Dave that you disagree with my assessment. It just appears to me that your inexplicable rage at this nascent radio station has blinded you to some of its many strong points. Thank you for hearing me out, Jeff Fearing (8/17/07)

Dave's response: Regarding the "ethnic and gender diversity" of WaPo Radio, I was arguing in favor of the morning show's female co-host taking over the hosting duties while the male host was away.....

This morning’s rant concerning Post Radio could be applied to any number of radio stations around the country. I wanted to like Post Radio, I really did try. The problem with the station is easy. The format and the personalities are terrible. For some reason, about ten years ago, radio stations began to hire columnists and reporters to carry a shift. Kornheiser is very good, and the rest of them just plain stink. They are all boring and they all sound like they should be writing instead of broadcasting. When I read Tom Shales or David Aldrige or even Bob Woodward for that matter, I am totally captivated. Then, I see them on TV, or hear them on the radio, and it comes off like the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. Usually, good writers make terrible actors, and vice versa. Talk radio is the hardest job in the entertainment world. Four hours a day and five days a week on the air is a lot different than a once a day or twice a week column that gets revised and edited. (8/17/07)

At least Donnie G wears his Greenbay Packer socks down in his basement while he plays internet football games against other little boys. A suffocating pompous windbag like Czaban wouldn't be caught dead in his pirates costume while engaged in cutthroat clownish NFL fantasy league action. (8/17/07)

If it makes you feel any better, you're about the only person who listens to WaPo radio. It may be the dullest, least informative thing ever broadcast. Endless hours of second-tier reporters droning on about their pet peeves--who gives a damn? By the way: what's a "Heyku"? Dave In Sterling (8/17/07)

Dave's response: For 17 more days.....

I don't care what anyone says...Shawn "Murph" Murphy is the Howard Stern of radio on Delmarva. I don't like everything he has done, but he is a star down here. He is what you think of when you think of rock radio. It is what WZBH needs to get back it's heritage. (8/17/07)

‘If There Are Call Letters, There Is an Opinion’ - Radio Engineers Find Little Common Ground in AM HD-R Nighttime Interference Debate www.rwonline.com (8/17/07)

Dave's response: Very interesting article! Hey, I worked at Radio World in the mid-1980s and helped hire article author Alan Carter.....

I wonder if anyone from WTEM will comment on Jason Whitlock's column where he RIPS John Thompson, his son, and Michael Wilbon. Ouch. msn.foxsports.com (8/17/07)

Dave, from your rant this morning, it's now obvious that you're one of the listeners about whom Tony Kornheiser used to say, "they don't 'get' this show." After the WMAL-lite efforts of David Burd and Victoria Jones, David Aldridge has been a breath of fresh air. I guess you missed his interviews this morning with Liz Clarke and Andrea Kramer, guests that a lightweight like Burd can't snag because he's not at their peer level. The shows since Burd went on vacation are far more likely to keep and entertain Tony's audience than anything that Burd's done in the last two months. Burd's job isn't to establish his own brand, but to maintain the Kornheiser brand - and he's not up the to job. Aldridge is. (8/17/07)

Dave's response: If Aldridge is interested in a radio career, he should start with some voice lessons. Project. Speak louder. I was in danger of becoming a big fan of Tony's at the end of his brief WaPo Radio career. Honestly, I do hope he shows up again on the radio dial at the beginning of 2008 - maybe on WTEM, FM 98.7?

Say what you want about Andy Pollin, but WTEM's Sports Reporters becomes virtually unlistenable when he's away and Steve Czaban's running the show. Yesterday he shoved all his fantasy football and Madden football and NFL betting pool obsessions down listeners' throats for lengthy portions of the program. While I could care less if he does that on his national show in morning drive (can easily switch over to Triple X for actual sports discussions on ESPN's Mike & Mike program), it's absurd for him to assume that 980's audience tunes in to hear about stuff like that. I didn't catch last Friday's show, but apparently he asked for calls on the 'top five strip clubs in the US'. That's despicable - strip clubs are places of ill repute that seem to be the venue for a lot of criminal activity on the part of NFL and NBA players these days. There's no way Pollin would allow any of this garbage to go over the airwaves while he's sitting in the driver's seat, and thankfully he returns this Monday. When Scott Jackson was filling in earlier in the week, he devoted entire segments to the baseball pennant races two days in a row. What a novel idea! - talking about meaningful games going on right now as opposed to obsessing over early preseason football results. Needless to say, you'd have thought the baseball season had ended weeks ago listening to Reporters once Czaban came back on Wednesday. Over on the TV side, despite the fact that by all accounts nothing of any import happened with the Redskins yesterday, Channel 7's Greg Toland still chose to lead with them on his late night sports report (presumably the other local channels did as well). That's an example of what really galls people who've moved here from other parts of the country (especially areas where baseball's a big deal) about DC sports coverage - this notion that once training camp starts, the Skins have to be the number one story at all times regardless of what's happening with any other local team. If it's a slow day at Redskin Park, reporters shove microphones in front of players and coaches and try to get juicy soundbytes to feature prominently on their sportscasts. Never mind the fact that the Nationals aren't contending for anything right now - basic Journalism 101 dictates that highlights of a Nats-Phillies game completed just an hour before the start of 11 PM newscasts (and important in the NL East race for the visiting team) should take precedence over some lame Skins piece you've already played five hours earlier. Mike, Fairfax (8/17/07)

I was one milli-second from stroking my name on a DCRTV support check when I read that some cement pond swimming untrimmed hey-nanny-nanny Hillbilly claimed that West Virginians had a "better standard of living." It's the old gambit and ruse: Golly Gee Beav..I love everything about your site, but this free flowing message board and it's upsetting comments will now deny you what you weren't going to get anyhow. If this was the standard, we would all stop paying our ISPs and shit can our computers. For the record: Here in Northern Virginia I can spot, an Irene Ryan slot machine pulling Soweee yelping 8th grade edjucationed banjo pickin' Ned Beatty envying thatch roofed livin Duke O' Hazzard watching Bob Evans eating Jerry Springer porch sitting trailer park loving overweight West Virginia phony, from a bench at Tysons Corner. and the gas station owner,,,not surprised it was a "she" but i wonder,,,was the station owner liberal or conservative. BTW...told by someone on the Hill that Cathy Hughes often votes Republican. (8/17/07)

A quick congratulations to Bob Mathers for correctly answering my trivia questions on who recorded "This Wheel's on Fire" and "Six Man Band". Julie Driscoll/w Brian Auger & the Trinity was the correct answer for the first question, and the Association was the answer for the 2nd song. I see that no matter how deep I go, somebody out there knows the answers to my musical trivia questions, and that's a good thing. I have both songs in my collection, and I wonder if these received airplay in the Baltimore/Washington area when they were hits in the late 60's. Thanks to Carl Merson for the background information on Julie Driscoll and on the song itself. and to you, Dave and Bob Mathers for the funny comments about the song. Ed Jones, Bel Air MD (8/17/07)

Thirty years ago yesterday, when Elvis passed away, I was listening to WCAO in my car. Keith MacDonald was on the air in afternoon drive when newsman Bob Bartel came on with the bulletin. That’s frankly all I remember. I was wondering if anyone recalls Baltimore or Washington stations going to special programming, such as all-Elvis, after the announcement. Roddy Freeman (8/17/07)

Coming from someone very much in the know: This wasn’t just some whim. Tracey Neale has been working with issues surrounding African children for many years, including winning an Edward R. Murrow Award and the World Health Organization’s Pan-American Award for Excellence in International Reporting in 2000 for her documentary on AIDS in Africa. Tracey used the award money from the Pan-Am award to create the Africa Action Fund, a fund that has collected thousands of dollars to benefit Pediatric AIDS clinics and orphanages. This issue is a life passion for her, as is the dream of adoption. She has seen first-hand the ravages of AIDS in Africa. She has held and comforted a handful of the millions of children who suffer from AIDS there. She has seen children die. The fact that she has decided to bring two of these children into her own home, as a single mom, is incredible and awe-inspiring and should be applauded. To say she is ignoring children in this country is incredibly ignorant. No one by themselves can solve all the problems of neglected children in this country or any other. Tracey is doing her small part to basically save the precious lives of two children in her own way. She should be congratulated, and not in any way criticized. (8/17/07)

Dave's response: Amen! Well said.....

(I'm so glad I decided to read the DCRTV mailbag BEFORE mailing in my support check.) I hate this kind of “threat”… had support checks come in the past? Do you suppose there was even consideration to “mail in a support check” in the future? Doubt it… Go ahead and voice your opinion (that his comments were juvenile or what have you…) but please don’t lie by saying that you were “going to” financially support his web site but withdrew because of remarks that may have offended you. (8/17/07)

Dave's response: The person who made that "threat" has never supported DCRTV and most certainly never will.....

To "An adoptive Dad" -- If you read my posting correctly, you would have seen the statistic for 140,000 children who are in North American foster care systems and waiting for loving and safe homes. My family is not as wealthy or Catholic as you assume. We went through a Department of Social Services to have two children become permanent members of our family. There is nothing wrong with reminding people that there are 140,000 foster children in North America who need a home just as much as those who come from other countries. Lisa in Ashburn (8/17/07)

If Dave is correct about someone at WERQ who went on the air about a gas shortage here in Maryland, Radio One should offer an apology on the air & someone should be suspended or fired for an act of stupidity. The dumbest award should not be awarded only to the Bush administration of their mishandling of the tragedy of New Orleans but to the stupid Shell gas station owner in Dumbdalk Maryland caught raising gas prices to $7.03 on WJZ Sky Chopper 13 cameras and changing it back to $3.43 after Shell company officials demanded her to do so.Reg from Baltimore (8/17/07)

FOX 5 "weathering" more changes very soon..Is that a hint that the weather team and/or someone on that team will be making some changes..If it has to do with Tony Perkins, there's been speculation that the station has plans other than doing the weather for him. If you watch the morning news, he's more and more out in the field. He's already taken over two segments that Holly Morris used to do; "Neighborhood News" & " Let Tony Try It". And Dave, regarding your Front Page post of Lou Holder possibly being let go, in general, I've never put much credence in FOX's sports dept anyway. It's always seemed like the Dave Feldman sports dept. Lou Holder was rarely seen. And Diane Roberts is seen less. Both she and Lou must have a full time job somewhere else because I can't believe they're making a living working once or twice a week, if not less. (8/17/07)

Re: "You'd think with all the friggin' cable channels, we could get one like UK Gold, with classic Britcoms like "Keeping Up Appearances," "Fawlty Towers," "One Foot In The Grave," "Absolutely Fabulous," "As Time Goes By," and the like." C'mon, Dave, I _know_ MPT makes it into northern Virginia. If it ain't on your cable, stick a bowtie antenna in the window. They've been showing all those shows for forever and a day (except for AbFab). I've been wondering why their Britcom schedule has remained practically unchanged for 25 years. Hooray for region-free DVD players for the things no one ever imports: Doctor in the House, The Goodies, Goodness Gracious Me, The Mighty Boosh, The Fast Show, The Office (the good version), UFO, etc. etc. (8/17/07)

Dave's response: I do catch MPT's "Afternoon Tea" and Saturday evening Britcoms, but I want more, more, more!

Shirley Mr. Grammarian you do not appreciate the wonderful Heyku's of Tom Gavin, this the pity for you "are we not all hippocrates and contradicts if you really think about it long live the don and mike"........isn't Don Geronimo quite a bit like the Fat Elvis at this point? The don has his little memphis mafia, he uses a black kit bag, he has an assortment of dogs, or whats left of them ..sort of Don's Scatter...and an intense longing for his mama i.e. Don said his mom's bra's smelt like ace bandages........i did enjoy today's elvis tribute show on the DnM show, what time did you clock O'Meara saying this was the bestest Elvis show ever and that's some new tidbits, like he say every year...but O'Meara did bring out a new imitation, i believe, his Dino Martin was spectacular, can't wait for him to sing my Dean favorite, lil' ole winemaker,me.......Tracy Neale seems like she has a new make up artist , face seems somewhat kabuki like, how many times has she been married, and has the move to channel 9 been a success in the ratings?......i like the toothless of west virginny not the carpetbaggers who came in jacked up the land values and chased a way the toothless, i love them dolly sods.......was listening to WPFW this evening in the 7pm hour, heard Bill Evans, yesterday was his birthday, and vocalists like Tony Bennett, Ella, Johnny Mathis and someone new too me Dave Allan...why it took me back to summer evenings on WMAL so very long ago and far away now....excuse me, I feel like a nice cool bowl of itty tream...did Elvis have snow peas or crowder peas in his smashed taters? (8/17/07)

WHFS Sports "Irks" Me! "HFS" has been throwing FM sports down my throat for the last three years. I don't listen to this station for this crap. I was so happy when D&M moved from 1300 because they forever preempted them. Since the move they've done nothing but try to make 105.7 into a sports talk station. I don't need the last hour of Don and Mike cut EVERY other night for a bad Orioles pre-game show, or even bad Orioles games, let alone Ravens player talk shows that are being aired simply because they tossed HFS the biggest amount of cash. THEN Kirk and Mark pimp the local sports all morning and even Ed Norris gets into it later in the day. The year is 2007. If there is a game I'm interested in I will WATCH it. When Don and Mike are done I will never have any reason to tune in to this excuse for radio. Die HFS! (8/17/07)

PQ- Thanks very much for the WKBO link. I had not seen that site and have just spent the better part of 2 hours combing through it. The John St. John aircheck is priceless. As a pre-teen growing up in the Hburg area, KBO was larger than life and JSJ was king. Thanks again. -Brian (8/17/07)

Speaking of Lou Holder, I saw him yesterday afternoon at Union jacks in Bethesda, a spot often frequented by Chick Hernandez and other people from CSN. It is located just a few minutes from their studios. (8/16/07)

Hmmmmmm? So West Virginia is Hillbilly Haven? I'm so glad I decided to read the DCRTV mailbag BEFORE mailing in my support check. As a native West Virginian who used to live in Northern Virginia, I can only say that here in Hillbilly Haven, the water is clear, the air is clean, and we can recognize patronizing jerks a mountain away. And since a lot of folks from Loudoun, Facquier, and Fairfax Counties have migrated here because of our better standard of living, lower taxes, and good ole fashioned neighborly helpfulness, you need to get with the program and stop the hillbilly bashing. Just because our lifestyle is simple doesn't mean we're simple. Get over yourself. We certainly have. Sherry from WV (8/16/07)

Dave's response: Hey don't blame DCRTV by withholding your support check (which you probably were never going to send anyway) for what someone says in the Mailbag. And it's "Fauquier".....

Chris Core might be a gem but for someone his age he is woefully ignorant about topics that have to do with the courts, law, and how the criminal justice system operates. (8/16/07)

Looks like Czaban responded after all. He's wrong on at least two counts. Other hosts on his station try to do some hockey or soccer once in a while and they don't seem to be suffering the great harm that Czaban seems to think his show would suffer. I'd also point out that COMCAST Sportsnet does a good job of covering both AND treating both with respect and they don't seem to be suffering. Czaban also seems to be saying that if you spin the ratings enough, we're happy with what we have. Kind of a loser attitude it seems to me. czabe.com (8/16/07)

Dave - I first learned of DCRTV when Freda Wright Sorce died in a tragic accident in July 2005. I was so stunned by the news that I Googled her name and your website popped up, among others. So I check in every once in a while to see what's going on with D&M. When Don (Mike Sorce) did his outstanding tribute to his late wife a few weeks after her death, it was the most compelling radio I've ever heard and I think it showed how great he can be doing what he does. A lot has happened since July 2005. I try to listen to D&M when possible, usually on the drive home because I can't get the station frequency at work. As an outside observer, it has been apparent to me that Don has not resolved his many issues about the premature death of his wife. Which isn't surprising. And he seems to have become more aggressive and cruel, I think because he no longer has the calming influence of his late wife. On retrospect, she really was his anchor and the show has declined due to the lack of a feminine perspective. Also, IMHO, his current "friend" is coming across as a flake and a doormat who doesn't have a clue. Too bad. If the rumors are true that he and Mike O'Meara have had a rift, which is causing the current "WTF" situation, it's maybe because Don hasn't worked through his issues and is seriously self-destructing. I'm sorry if this is the case. Because he is talented and all of this bull is beneath him. I'm sorry he's going through this situation; however, Mike, Rob and Buzz deserve to be treated with respect and should be supported, as they supported him last year during his hour of need. I sincerely hope they all bounce back from this ongoing situation. At the same time, it is the responsibility of WJFK management, namely Michael Hughes, to provide the support that is obviously needed by the D&M team to get beyond this crisis. If that doesn't happen, I would think Mr. Hughes shares the majority of the blame for the situation. Shari in WV (8/16/07)

Pollin is on vacation and Czaban has yet to comment on Leonsis' comments. However, Leonsis is a hero if you read some of the soccer and hockey blogs and message boards because he voiced a sentiment about second class treatment by media that seems to resonate nationwide. (8/16/07)

A tear welled up in my one good eye after listening to Don and Mike today. Is that the last Elvis death anniversary show we'll get to hear, if Don is retiring next spring? I guess so. Nothing more to look forward to. Life is so utterly pointless, baby. - Gramps (8/16/07)

U.S. programmers aim their antennas at Europe. There used to be NBC SuperChannel. There still is CNN International. So why don't we have Breakfast Time at half-past one (a.m.), live from London on BBC? Sky News? It would be fascinating to watch European TV. With 500 channels filled with dreck, some alternatives would be nice. I've seen enough of celebrity muscle builder John Basedow, whoever he is. We have the technology. Hey! Congrats to the love birds at the White House. Daughter Jenna is getting hitched to the son of the head of Virginia's Republican Party. The groom worked closely with the late Karl Rove. Imagine! A Royal Wedding! (8/16/07)

Dave's response: You'd think with all the friggin' cable channels, we could get one like UK Gold, with classic Britcoms like "Keeping Up Appearances," "Fawlty Towers," "One Foot In The Grave," "Absolutely Fabulous," "As Time Goes By," and the like. Throw in some of the better UK dramas like "Lovejoy," "Rumpole," and "Rosemary & Thyme." Call it BBC America Classics.....

Not just Lou Holder leaving, FOX5 will be weathering more changes ... very, very soon! (8/16/07)

Anyone know if or when the Sports Retarders will whine and complain about Ted's criticism? It'll be with a whimper, because more people were at the DC-LA game than they have listeners. (8/16/07)

Yeah-the BBC 1 programs are time shifted, so when I drive to work I listen to Chris Moyles. Then I get to my desk and listen to Edith Bowman. Now, my question is-how does the BBC get money--is it government funded? Also, according the latest RAJAR numbers, BBC is kicking GCap's ass!-They have a nationwide share of like 20 something! (8/16/07)

Dave's response: The BBC is funded by the British taxpayer. And there are no ads on any of the BBC's TV and radio networks which serve the UK. However, outside of merry olde England, the BBC's networks are often funded by ad revenue, a la the BBC America cable TV network.....

As for Lou Holder being gone from FOX5, if anyone's watched it for awhile, you KNOW that the viewers will be the last to know (if at all) what happened..People just disappear from that station without a word being said. Now, I came in on the end of the 5pm news and there was some guy named Todd Lewis on there doing the sports. Because I came in late, I don't know if he was introduced as the new guy or what. But, I looked him up and if this is the same guy, he was a sports anchor in Orlando and his contract wasn't renewed. So, maybe this IS the same guy. Don't know.. (8/16/07)

Hey Dave, according to EITMOnline.com, Craig is no longer with EITM. Our *producer* quit his job on the air this morning. It was bizarre and it was kind of random, but it was totally real. In fact, it still hasn't even set in yet, so I think the best way to convey what happened is to have you listen to the audio. The clip starts with *Elliot* telling our producer to go upstairs and check to see if the rumors about the recently fired WMZQ DJ, *Jim London* being in the building are true. His e-mail is also missing from EITMonline.com. (8/16/07)

("I discovered BBC Radio 1 on the Siruis last month-that is all I listen to. I feel pulled into the programming, as it is engaging and entertaining. I know that the programming is 5 hours behind-but it is great to listen to"...) I believe that the Sirius feed is time-shifted 5 hours so that the shows are virtually real-time, at least on the East coast. For example morning drive is Chris Moyles. You can compare the line-up on the BBC radio web site. Tony (8/16/07)

Regarding the 'This Wheel's On Fire' thread: The Brian Auger version, I believe, was the first officially released version. But as most of you probably know it was a Dylan/Band Basement Tape original (written by Bob and Rick Danko) from 1967 that circulated heavily amongst the British music elite at that time (this tape also provided the demo for Manfred Mann's cover of "Quinn The Eskimo"). And, if you are a student of the Beatles' Get Back/Let It Be rehearsal tapes, you'll hear George Harrison break out into several "Basement Tape" originals. Lastly, if you want to get a good dose of Julie Driscoll, check out the Monkees' "33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee" special from April 1969 (a show that NBC had so little faith in, they ran it against the Oscars!). Carl Merson (8/16/07)

Speaking of the WPWC site, over the past year the towers there have had a variety of light combinations, from all lights functioning to no lights functioning to the present east and west towers lighted but the middle one dark. It's been that way for a few months now. In multi-tower arrays, do all of the towers have to be lit at the top, or can one remain dark for an extended period of time? I would think that's especially dangerous given the proximity to Quantico's helicopter traffic. (8/16/07)

How can any of us judge Tracey Neale and her desire to adopt a child/children. Lisa from Ashburn must have had a smooth and wonderful experience adopting within the U.S. Let's take a guess: Catholic Charities?? Maybe Tracey doesn't fit within the extremely strict guidelines that organization follows. Not every adoption follows the same script as you may have. Adoption is an extremely difficult process unless you are very wealthy, and the majority of us, and this includes Tracey, have to jump through hoops and wait an extremely long time to find a MATCH. Tracey has one strike against her which is that she is a single woman trying to adopt. If you know anything about adoption, or have been through it, adopting in the US as a single female is much more difficult than Internationally. Please, leave her alone, it will be difficult enough caring for those 2 children without all of this crap thrown at her feet. Give it a rest people and enjoy the gifts you have been given, whether adopted in the US or elsewhere. An adoptive Dad. (8/16/07)

Patrice Harris, WBFF-TV (Fox 45)... 10.) Heather Harlan, Baltimore Business Journal.... (8/16/07)

Dave's response: OK, cool. Next week I want to do a Baltimore female media hottie battle. So, which two should I pick? So many difficult decisions.....

I promise that this is my last word on this off-topic subject, but I need to respond to your characterization of me as "someone more concerned that his adopted children remain his property than adopting American." Property? What are you talking about? I referred to my two adopted children are "my own kids" simply because you were clearly trying to draw some sort of a distinction between adopted kids and one's "own" kids. My children (who happen to be adopted) are not my property, they're my children, no different than if they were my biological offspring. I'm just amazed that anyone has the nerve to criticize someone's noble act of adopting two orphans. (8/16/07)

I know this a "broadcasting" board...so I just wanted to let you all know that "Delmarva radio star" Murph is adopting 5 small African orphans...M.H. (8/16/07)

Dave's response: With his son Bart to soon graduate from college and leave home, we hear that Don Geronimo is going to adopt a new "son" - Tom Gavin.....

...how hilarious is it that you called GVS a "ghoul"? (8/16/07)

A technical update: another set of mutually exclusive applications filed in '04 in the window for major AM changes (Auction 84) has been resolved. Approved is a new station on 920 kHz that will serve Quantico, VA, from the existing WPWC site. This applicant won out by forming a limited liability company with his competitors, giving each of them a slice of the pie. This station will cover southern Prince William, northern Stafford, and western Charles Counties. Regards, Dave Loudin (8/16/07)

Dave's response: Just what the near-dead DC area AM band needs - another station. Ha ha ha.....

Re: "In my experience, evry newsroom I ever worked in or knew well as overwhelming liberal. However, people always went out of their way to try to be fair. This incident was over the top. Embarassing for Journalists." If I understand your version of English, you're saying everyone you ever met working as a journalist has been "overwhelming liberal." You must have had a very limited experience. Of the four newsrooms I've now worked in the split has been nearly even, with more conservatives in management and the younger reporters, and more liberals among the ranks of veteran reporters and editors. But as you say, the vast majority tried to be fair in their reporting. Frankly, it's not that hard to do, you just tell the story and don't editorialize. That's why I find Fox news so appalling--they go out of their way to editorialize, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. My favorite recent example was a promo for an upcoming story that ran in the Fox crawl one afternoon: "Why Do Democrats Hate A Healthy Economy?" (8/16/07)

Funny that I started a ''blog'' on channel 5's site politely questioning why they're going to be running a gossip show at 6 30 every evening following an hour and a half of news that more than likely had many of the same stories about Lindsay, Britney and Paris BUT somehow it never got posted. BUT Alison Seymour writes about Britney's latest dilema and I posted on there that IF they stopped acting like every time one of those morons farts, it's news, MAYBE news might have a lil integrity. Paul (8/16/07)

Final response to Tracey Neale adoption debate: 1) "Based on your crude comments I sense that you are commenting on a subject you know knowing about." Not certain which posting you read, but there were absolutely no "crude comments" made about anybody by me (I was the original poster about this topic who was called a " xenophobic asshole" by someone more concerned that his adopted children remain his property than adopting American). I am no "expert" like you must be, it's just my opinion, which I do know about. 2)"In addition while it is true there are indeed many many children here in the states looking for families, there are as many and more overseas." So who is going to adopt the children in need of adoption here: Africans? They don't seem to be able to take care of their own now, do they? Bu then, it seems, neither do we if we have Americans ignoring our own kids in lieu of African kids. 3) "You clearly think that orphans in Africa are less deserving of adoption than kids in this country, and I simply disagree. An orphan's an orphan; it doesn't matter where he or she is from": Tell that to this American kid: www.nbc4.com (8/16/07)

RE: are we not all hippocrates and contradicts if you really think about it long live the don and mike /// All aspects of the average Don & Mike listener are evident in this collection of words masquerading as a sentence. Hippocrates was either that ancient Greek dude who practically invented medicine, or a container to hold Hippos. And Contradicts were those guys Reagan tried to eliminate back in the 1980s. Capitalization and punctuation are frivolous and unneeded, I completely agree. Thanks for the chuckle. More entertaining than the show. (8/16/07)

"say she wanted some true African blood" Is this like Hitler and true Aryan blood. Who knew Kemi was a black supremacist? Paul (8/16/07)

Hi Ed Jones! I believe 'This Wheel's On Fire' was the effort of Brian Auger & The Trinity featuring the pixieish Julie Driscoll. Probably inspired by some guy driving on a blown out tire at high speed down the beltway. Then, I would imagine for the second question you are referring to a certain 'Six Man Band' known as Terry Kirkman and the Association. Love your trivia questions, and keep them coming. - Bob Mathers (8/16/07)

Comcast SportsNet is working with D.C. United on a really special campaign to benefit the Children's Inn at NIH. We will be using the Aug. 22 D.C. United matchup to kick off our yearlong effort. This is kind of an interesting, one-of-a-kind campaign, that will include all the D.C. area teams. (8/16/07)

Say what you will about Chris Core, it just might be the most entertaining political show on the air in DC, simply because, while a conservative, he dares to be somewhat reasonable and challenge the raging-id conservatives who call in. Compared to the comically cynical, sneering, dishonest, over-the-top propaganda of the Mark Levin show, Core is a gem. (8/16/07)

That's a real shame because Sinclair has been fumbling its web operations for years, and it's the reason why foxbaltimore.com is one of the worst ranked media websites in town. Sinclair has had a parade of local web/media gurus through their doors over the last several years to talk about what to do over there, but they can't get out of their own way to create even a hint of a website with good content and a decent user experience. I'm African, Everyone seems to be fighting over the fact Tracy Neale is heading to Africa to get her kids. Could it be that she wanted black twins, or say she wanted some true African blood or maybe she wanted those beautiful East African Ethopian or Somalian kids, whatever the reason, Angelina went there too to get Zahara when she could have picked up any black kid from WEDNESDAY'S CHILD at NBC4! Tracy, have a safe journey, make sure you get your malaria vaccine and bring them beautiful babies home soon. Man! Do some posters know those kids are orphans? Sorry Dave- I am normally just lurking around your site and I know this is not really radio or TV related but I wanted to comment briefly. To the unsigned poster (I love those) who finds it necessary to comment on Ms Neale’s pending adoption, until such time that you are confronted with the choice of adoption please refrain from commenting. I can not, nor would I, comment on her reasons for adoption or her choice of adoption location however, since my wife and I adopted 2 boys from Russia a few years ago this is something I know a great deal about. We could have adopted here in the states but my research showed a bit too much uncertainty for my liking. That is to say that in our minds, the US legal system could not guarantee my kids would be ours forever (I.E. many instances of birth mothers reneging on giving kids up for adoption years after the fact). So we made the choice to go overseas. In addition while it is true there are indeed many many children here in the states looking for families, there are as many and more overseas. These children are not in facilities even close to what I would call ‘reasonable living quarters’. Based on your crude comments I sense that you are commenting on a subject you know knowing about. Once again, until the time comes when you need to make the choice of adoption, for whatever reason, please keep your uneducated opinions to yourself.Chris- Glenmoore Pa (8/16/07)

Why should Tracy Neal adopt from the United States? Because there are 140,000 children in North America’s foster care systems ready to complete the adoption process and join a loving and stable home. Lisa from Ashburn, a mom of two adopted children who were born in the United States (8/16/07)

In response to "The answer, douchebag, is that I have my own kids. . . . My turn to ask you a rhetorical question now, asshat: how many children from ANYWHERE have you adopted and do you take care of YOUR OWN children or expect someone from Africa to come here to do that?" I'm the "douchebag/asshat" who sent the original message and I have two great kids, both of whom were adopted internationally. They are MY OWN children. You clearly think that orphans in Africa are less deserving of adoption than kids in this country, and I simply disagree. An orphan's an orphan; it doesn't matter where he or she is from. (8/16/07)

To Christian: You are probably right concerning MZQ's "America's Country"..as I've pointed out before: don't hear that station much as it's just kind of hard to pull in; I did used to listen to WMZQ more in the late 90s (Carol Munse did mid-days back then)..and I used to really enjoy listening to her! After she left, I kind of got out of listening to MCQ; the one thing that I found with that station (this is probably true of most of these mainstream country stations)..they just had certain songs that they'd play over and over! But I did enjoy listening to Carol; never got to meet her..but I first heard of her when she was at WICO..before they ever started calling themselves "Cat Country"..this is back when they showed up at 94.3. Unless I missed something, there are a lot of Black children in the welfare system in the US that need adoption, even babies. Ms. Neal needs to give these kids good homes not go to Africa. (8/16/07)

It's been awhile since I asked some musical trivia questions. Since this is the case, I have 2 questions and they are deep. Who recorded This Wheel's on Fire? Clue: It was a British psychedelic song. Who recorded Six Man Band? Clue: This band is known for their mellow tunes, while this song was pretty hard for them. Any takers? Sorry to hear about the deaths of Harry Shriver and Merv Griffin. I listened to WFBR when Harry Shriver was there. Johnny Walker always made fun of Mr. Shriver. And as for Merv Griffin, I remember my parents looking at his late night talk show when Johnny Carson was on vacation. Ed Jones, Bel Air MD (8/16/07)

Dave's response: Ah, "This Wheel's On Fire" - will have to re-watch my DVDs of "Ab Fab".....

Enough already about the adoption of kids from anywhere this is a broadcasting site, not an adoption agency. Whatever one decides to do regarding children, adopt, foster, etc. It's not our business. Drop it ALREADY! (8/16/07)

You know, in response to the Eastern Shore stations, I know at each station on the shore, there are groups of dedicated, passionate people behind the scenes. Whether they are starters, or pros-they bust thier hump to provide local radio! I know from working in Cambridge, it is a small town, that is not really in Salisbury market, but it does get some Salisbury ad $$, they bust thier ass, work long days and work HARD to put thier products on the air. Same for Great Scott, Clear Channel and Delmarva. The music mix may not be the best, but that is the glory of small market-more freedom to play with the music. Sure, there are cookie cutter like Q105, Kiss FM and OC104-but, you know-they work. People want to be entertained and want company, and each talent on Eastern Shore radio can relate to thier listener and demographics-which is what makes this market unique. So-for everyone at ZBH, Big, the Heat, WAAI, The Duck and of course JOE, I have your back and know first hand that your bust your ass! Steve (8/16/07)

"demeen" CLASSIC! (It's spelled d-e-m-e-a-n.) Spell-check is your friend. If you're going to demean and call people out because you don't like them, or how they do things... the least you could do is spell correctly. Oh, and when you're running a radio station, you let those of us who actually do so know. kthxbye-djmr (8/16/07)

This Saturday's (8/18) MLS game between the DC United and the Columbus Crew, which was originally scheduled to air on Comcast SportsNet, will move to sister channel CN8, due to CSN carrying the Washington Redskins' preseason game that same night. (8/16/07)

A DCRTV mailbag reader asks: "And how many of these American kids in need of adoption have you adopted?" The answer, douchebag, is that I have my own kids. As for the rhetorical question "What makes an orphan in Africa any less deserving of a loving home than someone in this country? " Obviously I never said that they were not deserving of a "loving home" only that there are children here, in Neale's OWN COUNTRY and COMMUNITY that she makes her living from and supposedly cares so much about according to WUSA promos, that need adoption. My turn to ask you a rhetorical question now, asshat: how many children from ANYWHERE have you adopted and do you take care of YOUR OWN children or expect someone from Africa to come here to do that? (8/16/07)

I'm not sure why people are posting about the stations on the E. Shore being bad? For a small market they have a lot of good stations and a much better variety of stations than most major markets including DC/Baltimore. 93.5 WZBH "The Beach" is pretty much the same as Baltimore's 98Rock, but with less chatter. Both are good stations though. 96 Rock has always had a rough time trying to find a niche, and it seems like they don't have any real connection yet, but it's not a horrible station. Otherwise, the country stations ("Froggy 99.9", "Cat Country 97.5", WINX-FM, WAAI-FM), oldies (they have two! - "The Wave" & "The Duck"), Urbans ("OC 104", "Kiss FM"), Adult Alternative (Ocean 98.1), Adult Hits (Q105), Male talk (WGMD & WQMR), classic rock ("Big 98.5 / 103.5"), smooth jazz (97.1), and whatever else that I'm forgetting sound good and in a few instances, stations like them are not even available in many other markets. Sure, the jocks at a lot of these stations aren't great and they move around a lot, but that's small market radio. The pay is bad, so it's where people start, or where the mediocre end up. Either way the variety is really good for such a small market and most of the stations including "The Beach" are far superior to like stations in other small markets and even many big markets. It may not be LA's KROQ, but at least it's not (yawn) Baltimore's "The Bay"! (8/16/07)

Perhaps we can agree to disagree on the WGAR "Real Top-40-or-Just-Chickenrock" question. There was only a few degrees difference. Either way it was a great radio station that I listened to frequently and longed to work for. One person who did is Jim Buchanan, weeknight weather anchor on WPMT Fox 43 in York PA. Jim did the overnight shift at WGAR for a couple of years before returning to PA as Music Director and middays on WKBO Harrisburg. Yes, I remember WKBO quite well. It was one of the leading medium market Top 40s on the East Coast. A couple of guys put together a nice tribute site at wkbo.cjb.net... Check it out. PQ in South Central PA (8/16/07)

Dear Mr. Berry, GM of WMAL, Last night, Mark Levin floated a "rumor," that the Democrats on Capital Hill were trying to make the September report delivered to Congress by General Petraeus "closed door" and "private." He was pretty mad about that. I am sure you heard his disgust at the Democrats over this finagling. I can only imagine how shocked you were when you read in the Washington Post this morning that it was actually The White House that proposed making General Petreaus and Ambassador Crocker's testimony before Congress "private," and the White House had actually suggested sending the Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense to deliver the public report. Please have Mark apologize to his audience tonight for getting the story backwards yesterday. We don't need WMAL's airwaves being used to disseminate blatantly false political accusations. (8/16/07)

"Okay, so I'll ask the obvious question regarding Tracey Neale adopting twins from AFRICA which is what is wrong with AMERICAN kids in need of adoption?" It's an "obvious question" only to xenophobic assholes. What makes an orphan in Africa any less deserving of a loving home than someone in this country? And how many of these American kids in need of adoption have you adopted? (8/16/07)

Monday night's George Michael segment on NBC4 was pure garbage. Don't you think we want to hear some incisive discussion of the Skins' "inert"offense when he has the Head Coach on? Instead here's what we got-1. A long discussion about the acquisition of Todd Pinkston-a 4th or 5th string receiver. 2. Numerous slo-mo replays of Jason Campbell getting sacked. 3. A discussion about the Joe Gibbs racing team going to Toyota-whatever that means. ( Michael says everybody wants to know including his wife and daughter!)btw-It's clear George Michael asked Gibbs off camera about it and Gibbs clearly didn't want to answer-so what does Michael do?-He asks the question on camera and gets the same negative response from Gibbs! This is the Michael way-either he pussyfoots or else he antagonizes. Finally there's a long segment on Nascar. I hope to G_d they do better than this. It looks like we're in for another season of belly laughs when the Skins win and scowls when they lose. And of course Sonny predicting a win each week. Regards Biff (8/16/07)

(Dave's response: Come on! She's doing good by helping to care for two orphans, why should it matter where they are from.....) Please: how many wealthy Africans come to the United States to adopt children? How many Chinese come to the USA? How many Russians come to the USA to adopt children? How many...well, you get the picture. Neale should look home first instead of across the pond. Plenty of deserving, abused, AFRICAN AMERICAN children here folks who need adoption. Maybe she should watch "Wednesday's Child" on WRC for suggestions: www.nbc4.com (8/16/07)

Okay, so I'll ask the obvious question regarding Tracey Neale adopting twins from AFRICA which is what is wrong with AMERICAN kids in need of adoption? Maybe she is hoping to bump into or rub elbows with Brad and whatever her name is...a sad expression of neglect for your own people (Americans) who need your help. Thus the problem with being known as an African American versus an American African. (8/16/07)

Dan Snyder is “very happy” with Triple X Radio?? Sounds like a weak vote of confidence thrown out until Danny’s goons execute the next wave of employee terminations. If you don’t invest in decent signals, at what point can you show a profit? There is seven months a year when Triple X is the lowest revenue operation in DC. They will generate about the same or less Redskins play by play revenue as last year, and that performance caused a number of dismissals. The business model for Red Zebra looks like it was designed by a Zebra, and the team stinks. Dan Snyder has not been happy a day in his sorry, “no account, “miserable life. He hasn’t got a friend in the world who is not on his payroll. (8/16/07)

I’ll say this again: Chris Core is still a lightweight and was never seriously considered by either management or talent way back when WMAL owned DC to be able to carry a show by himself. Now that he’s one of the few locals, who else can they get to fill the time? Ex-ABCer. (8/15/07)

First of all, the leftover 90s Alt Rock songs can't be flushed down the toilet, cause the Mexican station's staff clog it all the time. Speaking of redneck persona, when is Wookie going to be sent packing? I'd rather listen to WZBH than WOCQ, and that is awful bad! (8/15/07)

In ref to WMZQ's web site, what's funny is you can type in URL like www.wmzq.com/pages/jimlondon.html and it'll bring up the dj profile page for Jim London even though the name was deleted from drop-down menu under "DJ'S". (This did not work for Seth Warner.) Don't listen to country much anymore these days but still think it sucks guys like these got sacked. -MarkD, Arlington. (8/15/07)

RE:It still puzzles me as to why WJFK-AM is WQSR's HD-2 when Oldies seems much more logical there. WJFK would make a much better compliment to the talk format on 105.7HFS and be WHFS-HD3-Let me tell you why, First is PURE Laziness-Mr Deacon and Mr.KiddDDD are too lazy to program another jukebox, its sooo hard ya know. Next, Mr LaBzee, cant get 1300 at his home so he needs 1300 on QSR HD-2 so he can listen to the board-ops screw up and the train-wreck that is Baltimore Gameday so he has something to demeen people about when he comes to work, he's gotta protect his phoney balogna job gentlemen..HA-RUMPFFF. WBIG seems to somewhat be a Greatest hits station just without the Motown and Soul. I don't listen to WBIG very often at all but when I have WBIG it doesn't sound very good and it seems they beat the heck out of the typical classic rock songs. Exspecially CCR and John Fogerty. Even their old Oldies format was better. WBIG is owned by Clear Channel so basically it will always be a cheaply run bad station. Baltimore's Jack should take a good look at WCBS. It's unknown how WCBS will do in the ratings books, but overall it sounds a lot better than Jack. I don't mind Jack, but the music playlist is just too wide and it seems to lean too much on the current Top 20 music. I would love to see WQSR flip to a Greatest Hits format and move Jack to HD-2 with minimal commercials. BTW - It still puzzles me as to why WJFK-AM is WQSR's HD-2 when Oldies seems much more logical there. WJFK would make a much better compliment to the talk format on 105.7HFS and be WHFS-HD3. (8/15/07)

I read with great interest the post from one Kathy Ball. I don't believe I have ever experienced a woman using the word "kotex" the way she did. I must assume "she" is either an imposter or a woman of very low class. Which is it, "Kathy"? (8/15/07)

With oldies WCBS-FM back on the air in New York, as its replacement tanked in the ratings, what are the chances of seeing an oldies station back in the Washington area? WBIG and WQSR have gone down the tubes since their new formats don't draw anywhere near as well as oldies do, even if 22-year-old advertising bozos don't think that the baby boomer generation has any money to spend. (8/15/07)

Dave's response: If Clear Channel's Dave Pugh was smart, he'd be doing that on DC's 100.3.....

As the guy who first put Murph in AM drive, KM is exactly right. He is just what ZBH needs right now. He gave them the best ratings they ever had and was the most consistant thing about ZBH for a long time. From what I understand he's only doing mornings and continuing in his full time roll in PR for a disaster relief company. Not sure how that's going to work with him spending half of his time in FLA but like him or not the show performed on a consistant basis and Delmarva liked him which is what mattered. You seem to know an awful alot about the show. I was there for the butt plugg calls which he openly stole from O&A but that was damn near 10 years ago. You sound like a disgruntled eastern shore radio vet who probably got canned from ZBH and 96 Rock. John Allen, former PD WZBH (8/15/07)

Do any of u ever stop to think that DCRTV prints almost all of your SORDID opinions, and when he expresses his.. Dear Lord/\....panty’s in an uproar with a certain CORE of folks that just plain don’t get it. He is willing to post your lame ramblings but, if he put HIS (HIS SITE)thoughts out there, you all seem to go berserk. As for Tony K, Victoria, Burd. They are ALL up to evaluation. I agree BURD is a BORE... Dr. Z (8/15/07)

Oh boy, Murph returning to that sorry bastion of mad-at-your-dad music, 93.5 The Beach. Murph and his obviously forced banter and his redneck impersonation that sounds more like a black guy--just what WZBH needs to pick up their ratings. Maybe he'll even revive the idiotic phone prank where he calls up some poor schmuck and just keeps repeating the word "butt-plug" over and over until they hang up. He'll go great with the Daughtry and Nickelback records they spin incessantly, and the '90's alt-rock leftovers that should've been flushed down the Great Scott toilet five years ago. "Hey kids, it's time for Mandatory Metallica! How wild is that?!" Not that 96 Rock is any better, because they aren't. They're both pretty damn awful stations. K.M. (8/15/07)

Dear Dave, David Burd didn't mention Karl Rove on the Tony K show for a number of reasons. First: He and Jessica Doyle talked about it all morning till 8:30. That's when the TK show started. And, do you really think Tony listeners want to hear about Karl Rove? Really? I've never read anything from you concerning Mr. Tony not talking about Iraq and Politics. It's not that kind of show stuuupid! Put the Viagra down please. Your hard-on for Burd and Post radio is obvious, too obvious. Whining about not mentioning Karl Rove is a stretch. One minute you're writing about how much Burd sounds better than Tony (when he filled in months ago, I think your phrase was: "The funny evil substitute") and the next minute you whine because he didn't talk about Karl Rove. Are you on meds? You don't give a shit about Rove and neither does the TK audience. I do agree that Victoria Jones should be sitting in for Burd while he's gone. It is also obvious to me, since I've listened to Burd since he did weekends on Post radio that Victoria is Burd's pal. He gave her lots of mike time on the weekends, and now she's sitting in with him daily and doing a great job. Please print the facts and not what you dream up in your head. Of course that's if you want this site to be taken seriously, sometimes I wonder. The ratings are up for the Post and still you're wearing a kotex. You got it bad man! Just print the facts and not rumors and crap from the mailbag from also-rans and wanna-bees. Not much to debate here Dave, you've left a paper trail on this site that proves me right. What say you now Dave? Kathy Ball, Silver Spring (oh I signed my post, how refreshing) (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Ah, that's why I call them "Rants." Duh. By the way, Fred Grandy pays me to listen to his show - up until 8:30 AM anyway, so I don't get to listen to Washington Post Radio before then.....

Dave, I don't mean to offend any black person but what the hell did Imus do anyway that is that bad? Last time I checked, I was till a black woman in my bathroom mirror this morning and take for instance the "thumbs down" that the NABJ (Nat'l Assoc of Black Journalists) just gave BET on their raunchy programming. Names like "Hot ghetto mess", SOB and more...We black people can call each other "niggers" but when a white person calls us that, we raise hell! Ebony magazine's "Black issue" last month warned about this. If a white man calls me a "ho", tell you the truth, words don't hurt me but these stupid rappers call us this all day and we continue to buy their damn CD's. While I'm shedding my dollars at record stores for my 3 preteen, teen and adult sons, they are fully warned not to call me or any other female such names! All this arguing on CNN, MSNBC and all needs to stop and that Rutgers chic needs to have her lawsuit thrown out period! Imus words have not caused her any distress as all she wants is part of that $20 million settlement! Why is she suing now? She probably still watches 50 Cent,L'il Wayne and Twista's videos daily on BET calling us "Ho's" or "Shorty". We black people need to take responsibility for our own words. Don Imus will certainly rise from those ashes. MediaKemi, Mediakemi@rogers.com, www.Keminications.com Toronto, Canada (8/15/07)

To PQ in South Central PA: You may be right about WGAR, I just remember it having the WABC-ish jingle package and the same style jocks. Whether or not GAR played the harder-edge stuff, I don't remember. Being from South Central PA, do you remember WKBO from that era? They also struck me as a WABC clone, in the mold of what I remember WGAR being. (8/15/07)

WGAR was indeed Top 40 in the '70s, but I seem to remember the DJs and jingles were more relaxed than usual and they did play a lot of oldies. It was one of the first stations to broadcast American Top 40. That was my introduction to Casey Kasem, as a 15-year-old listening to WGAR in my basement alone on Saturday nights in October 1970. And loving every minute of it. I was a fanatic of the show at first, but then 'GAR suddenly took it off the air at the beginning of '71. I was so upset I wrote a letter to the station begging them to bring the program back. Never heard a thing from them, but not long after that discovered AT40 was on WPGC Sunday mornings. KOF (8/15/07)

any news on WTRI 1520 am, couldn't pick up station on car radio yesterday afternoon, and can't pick up on my kitchen radio today and no internet streaming. Hope not bad news. (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Just checked at 4:50 PM at the DCRTV World Headquarters Listening Post overlooking the Hirst-Brault Expressway in beautiful Wild West Fairfax and WTRI was coming in - although not as strong as usual.....

Sounds like Greg Tantum needs to add an r to his last name. It is not becoming of a major market PD to throw a tantrum. How about a little sense of humor Greg? You will need it the next time the ratings are released. It doesn’t matter if “Deep Throat” comes back from the dead to fill in, or Ben Bradlee takes a shift wearing a lace tutu…the ship has sailed. (8/15/07)

"Take my criticism as a GOOD thing." I agree, your criticism IS a good thing, and the part of your Rant in which you criticized the show was fine. The problem was you didn't stop there...you went on to suggest that the company or its management is somehow sexist because we didn't have a woman host the show. It would be like me asking you if you were racist because you didn't like Adridge hosting the show. Same thing - a stupid question, a completely unfounded suggestion. But there it was. All I ask is that you think about whether there is any possible basis in fact before you go making accusations that will be widely read in our industry. Anyway, having said all I have to say about this, I'm done. -Brian (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Let's just say that by not having Victoria hosting in place of David, it "appeared" sexist. Perhaps it would have been smarter to have Victoria not do the Korny/Burd show this morning, since she was also doing afternoon hosting work for WaPo Radio. Then it would have looked like she had "another assignment" and not like she was being "passed over".....

"I am amazed at the venom Don and Mike spew towards just about every caller...". Well, thath's one of the main reasons that's why I stopped listening. The show is a hate-filled train wreck. But this isn't a new development, they've been on the forefront of caller abuse for years. Ron and Fez are the only hosts who take caller comments and work them into the show - not berate and insult them. But, take heart, there's only a couple hundred more "shows" before this tired old horse of a radio programme, ambles out to pasture - soon to be totally and quickly forgotten. Good riddance, D&M. pjdjinva. (8/15/07)

Man u guys love to take Dave (Hughes) to task for expressing his opinion. U r a bunch of holier then thou hypocrites. Dave does his homework, has strong personal opinions and is willing to express them. What's wrong with that? As for Burd, to me he equals BORING. Obnoxious humor that he thinks only the sophisticate extraordinaire gets. Unfortunately a lot of us blue collar peeple get it, but don't think it's funny. SKEETER (8/15/07)

Dave, Once again check the facts. Dave was in studio from one to several days a week before he had to hit the road. In studio sitting right next to Tony! Greg Tantum, Program Director, Washington Post Radio (8/15/07)

Dave's response: OK, OK, you're right. Just don't make Tom Shales the host tomorrow. OK? He sounds too much like beatnik poet William S. Burroughs......

Dave, If you are listening to the radio station as I write this you hear Victoria Jones doing a solo show for three hours. If you were listening this morning between 5:30 and 8:30 you head Jessica Doyle take the David Burd chair in morning drive and will do so for David’s entire vacation. If you have listened in the past you heard Victoria Jones and Hillary Howard (two women) co-host afternoon drive. As you listen in the future and have trouble telling the difference between men and women I will be happy to explain the difference for you. Greg (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Ha ha ha! Darn, I didn't get out of bed until 8:15 this morning. I didn't realize that Washington Post Radio was on the air that early. I will tune into the "Victoria Jones And Mrs. Dave Statter Show" on the new WFEM (formerly WTWP).....

Re: WGAR Cleveland. Not to overly beat this dead horse but I don't believe WGAR was ever a true "Top 40" station in the spirit of WABC, WCFL, WKBW, WLS, CKLW et cetera. In the early 70s a lot of what had been old-line middle-of-the-road stations reinvented themselves by modernizing their music and bringing younger, more contemporary jocks on board. This approach was often called "Chickenrock" because these stations played nearly everything the Top 40s played but without the Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. This was easily accomplished because harder-edged acts didn't often have Top 40 hits anyway and most of what was on the Top 40 charts was pretty benign stuff. WLW in Cincinnatti was one of the first to go this route and was very successful, as was WGAR, which ran a tight, bright AC format most of the time and Oldies with Norm N. Night in the overnight hours. The personalities were upbeat and Top 40-ish and the music was just about the same with a few more oldies thrown in to accomodate a slightly older audience, which at that time would have been anyone over 30. People who had grown up with rock 'n' roll but who, in the words of that great sage Larry Lujack, had had "enough drag strip and zit cream commercials to last you the rest of your life." PQ in South Central PA (8/15/07)

re: " It just sounded awkward this morning to bring in someone from the "outside" (David Aldridge) to host the show when it would have been better to have Victoria, Nigel, or even Joe Barber do it." David Aldridge isn't an outsider on Korneiser's show; he's been a regular guest all along - David Burd and Victoria Jones are the outsiders. Aldridge's shift this morning was the closest thing we've heard to the kind of show that Tony did since he went on "vacation". When and If Tony comes back, you won't be hearing Burd or Jones in that time slot; you will be hearing David Aldridge - as well as a lot of others who haven't been heard in a while. (8/15/07)

"But I still think she should have been David Burd's substitute host this morning after the great fill-in job she did when Burd was out sick last week." So because the person YOU like wasn't the one doing that particular show, you start accusing the company of being sexist? That's crazy. Would you accuse Bonneville of being racist because a fill-in person is white and not a minority? It was a ridiculous, irresponsible thing to write, on a blog that is read by thousands of people in this industry every day. The really infuriating part is that you obviously don't even care if what you write is true, as long as it serves to make your point. You like to hide behind your defense of, "Hey, it's my web site and I can write whatever I want" and "I'm only one guy, give me a break", but the fact is thousands of people in this business come to you for news and opinion (informed or otherwise) every day. When you start making irresponsible accusations like that, some people do accept it as true, and it affects people and their reputations. I challenge you to rise above those lame defenses in the future and start taking some responsibility for the truth in what you write. -Brian Oliger (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Whoa. One of the great things about a "crew" show, like Don and Mike, the Junks, Elliot, Jack Diamond, etc., is that you keep the "crew" intact even when someone's missing. Granted, it's only been a few weeks, but there's already a "crew" mentality developing with the Burd/Kornheiser show. It just sounded awkward this morning to bring in someone from the "outside" (David Aldridge) to host the show when it would have been better to have Victoria, Nigel, or even Joe Barber do it. (Making Aldridge a "crew member" would be OK, but not the head!) When Don Geronimo is sick, he has Mike O'Meara and sidekick Robb Spewak fill his shoes. Not someone "new." You confuse the listeners and you delute the "brand" you're trying to build. Take my criticism as a GOOD thing. You're building a radio team "brand" and doing it quickly. Don't blow it.....

Dave, Forgot to remind you, David Aldridge is one of the original cast with Tony. He was gone covering sports for his newspaper and TNT for the past couple of months. HE IS A REGULAR. Greg Tantum, Program Director, Washington Post Radio (8/15/07)

Dave's response: A regular "phone-in-er" but not an in-studio castmember like Nigel, Victoria, or Joe Barber. By that standard, you could have Lisa de Moraes or Stephen Hunter hosting the show. Pleeeaaaase no. Just because you work for the Post doesn't mean you know how to host a radio show, particularly in market numero ocho......

Chris Core got agitated and shot down several times by Paul from Media Matters this morning. A highlight was when Chris equated Anne Coulter on the right with Michael Moore on the left. Media Matters immediately shot back saying Moore has never advocated the murder of someone he disagrees with, and started listing occupations of those whom Anne has threatened for killing. Great stuff, Chris, you lost that one. Earlier, Chris equated Savage with Oberman, and Chris went down in flames again by Media Matters. you lost that point as well, Chris. Oh, and the point before that, and the point before that. Chris, do me a favor, tape the media matters business card on Mark Levin's computer monitor and watch him have a complete meltdown tonight. Mark Levin, putting Media Matters on the air made for good radio, would you like to book Media Matters on your program to discuss Scooter Libby and Karl Rove's roles in the Valerie Plame thing? Media Matters has done a lot of research on the scandal, and I am sure they would love to come on your show and discuss it with you. They can clarify for you a few things for you. Chris will be leaving you a business card, Give Media matters a call. Oh, never mind, Mark Levin doesn't let the facts interfere with his rants. (8/15/07)

"Maybe my memory is faulty, but I remember tuning in "top 40" on 1220 back as a kid....." Your memory is not faulty...1220 WGAR in Cleveland was a Top 40 WABC-clone in the 70s. WKYC was also a big TOP 40 blowtorch, but KYC I think had become WWWE by the time 1220 picked up the Top 40 mantle. -Brian (8/15/07)

Dave: You mentioned how you fell in love with radio over in the UK. I discovered BBC Radio 1 on the Siruis last month-that is all I listen to. I feel pulled into the programming, as it is engaging and entertaining. I know that the programming is 5 hours behind-but it is great to listen to. I also listen to Capital 95.8 out of London on the web. I have been doing some research on the radio over there, and it looks like FM really didn't begin to materialize until the 80s and most stations had an AM simulcast. I am trying to arrange a tour of Capital 95.8 and the BBC in London. (8/15/07)

Dave's response: England was always a few years behind the USA regarding commercial radio. Even up through the early 1970s, there were few - if any - "top 40" radio outlets in the UK, that's why foreign stations like Radio Luxembourg and pirates like Radio Caroline started up. Then, up through the 1980s, the Brits were slow to make the move to FM, especially with pop music formats. Even up until the early 1990s or so, Radio 1, the BBC's main pop music channel, was mainly an AMer, with only part-time status on the FM band throughout much of the UK. Now, in some respects like with digital radio, the Brits are way ahead of us here in the States. You can listen to Radio 1 and the BBC's other excellent radio services live via bbc.co.uk/radio.....

I caught today's broadcast and discussion about college students and handguns. The program was moving along swimmingly with the airing of callers' voice their opinions and "rants". Then Mr. Aldridge stepped on Ms Jones' voice track and the recorder caller to inject his personal views. Some professional reporter he is. Are his view's that of the station? The program? Most likely not. If he is the professional newsman. Let him report the news and let the callers voice their opinions for that segment of the show. Jones can handle herself without the blowhard Aldridge or the smug Burd. As far as the fiasco "Mr. Tony" I won't repeat anything that's already been written about. It's old, it's played out, it's rehash and old stories from an old guy that needs to move to Florida, shack up with Mike "ADHD" Source and they can talk to each other. No one else is listening to them.... (8/15/07)

Dave, are you sure you're not thinking about WKYC/1100AM in Cleveland, rather than WGAR? WKYC was a really hot AM top 40 in the 60s and 70s. Like you, WKYC was on my nighttime radio dial, along with WABC, WKBW, WCFL, etc, but never WGAR, which I remember as a real WMAL/WRVA/WBAL type fuddy-duddy station. Then I moved to SC and lost all of that---none of those great stations came in down there---had to be content with 61 Big WAYS. (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Maybe my memory is faulty, but I remember tuning in "top 40" on 1220 back as a kid.....

Imus doesn’t play in DC. There was a time before WTNT when Bennett Zier paid $500,000 a year to take his syndicated show on WTEM, I think. Successful NY radio acts have never fared well in the DC market, with the notable exception of Howard Stern. One could argue that Howard worked in DC because he was successful here before he went to New York. Imus was a bust; Opie and Anthony was a bust. Both of those shows were huge in NYC. I guess Frank Sinatra was wrong. If you can make it there, you can’t make it anywhere! (8/15/07)

"Or maybe Bonneville is a sexist company that believes a woman can't handle a top hosting job on the radio? " Dave, where the fuck did THAT come from? You didn't like the show, so you automatically make the leap that Bonneville is a sexist company??? Do you actually THINK before you write this shit, or do you just post whatever ridiculous bullshit pops out of your fingers onto your keyboard? (8/15/07)

Dave's response: I have since been told that Victoria Jones is doing a Wednesday afternoon show on Washington Post Radio. Great! But I still think she should have been David Burd's substitute host this morning after the great fill-in job she did when Burd was out sick last week. The ONLY reason I could think of why she was passed up for an "unknown" is because she's a woman. Why else? If I'm wrong, I apologize.....

Two interesting factoids. 1) As John Records Landecker used to say: "'Records' is truly my middle name." Back when he was on WIBG in Philadelphia around 1970 (before hitting it big in Chicago), he gave a talk over at WXPN for the staff (all undergraduates back then), and showed us his draft card, with the middle name Records. (Long John Wade also spoke to the group once, too.) It turns out that Records is his mother's maiden name and he was given that as his middle name. 2) 6090 KHz is the frequency for Radio Luxembourg, now all in German, but back in the old days when the Great 208 (meters, which is also 1440 KHz) was German by day, English by night, it was an almost full-time relay of 1440 KHz and carried the English language music programs aimed at Great Britain, and still does carry whatever the 1440 station plays. But the English music shows have been gone for 15 years now. You type "Great 208" into Google or Yahoo and you will find old jingles for Radio Luxembourg up the wazoo. Once I was in Luxembourg and stopped by the RTL building; it looked like a gigantic old mansion on the west side of the City. They wouldn't let me past the lobby, but the guard gave me 30 little round red bumper stickers that said "RTL: Mach Mit!" I wanted an RTL T-shirt or coffee mug, but that was all the guard had. It was a late Sunday afternoon in 1984, so RTL was just starting to be the huge conglomerate that it is now, with satellite and over-the-air TV station in lots of countries, and lots of types of radio stations all over the place. Back then it was mostly NE France, SE Belgium, far west Germany, and Luxembourg itself. At that time the FM band had just been enlarged in Europe from ending at 103 MHz to ending at 108 MHz like us. RTL in French had just started to expand to be on 104.3 over much of France. You could hear the German FM station in Trier, but not in Kaiserslautern back then, for example. And though the Great 208 was aimed at London, I could hear it on AM at night along the Autobahn almost all the way to Mannheim (via the rear lobe of the main signal or something like that), but not at all in Frankfurt. -- Carl in Olney (8/15/07)

Dave's response: I went on a two-week tour of England with some Herndon High teachers and students in 1974. And fell in love with Radio Luxembourg's English language pop music service which was beamed to England with 2 million-watts on 1440 AM (208 meters). And, yes, upon returning home, I discovered that I could hear the station on 6090 kHz shortwave from about 6 PM to 8 PM local time, until Radio Cuba came on an adjacent frequency and blew away Luxy, which signed off at 9 PM (2 AM in London) anyway.....

For those interested in Victoria Jones (though it has not been updated to mention WTWP, WTWT, and WTWP-FM) www.talkradionews.com -- Carl in Olney
Hello, all - We hope you are enjoying a good summer and feel almost ready to kick it into gear for the coming fall. At The Q&A Cafe we've been busy booking up a strong season for what will be our sixth year of lunch and interviews in the back room of Nathans Restaurant in Georgetown. The line-up includes news correspondent and anchor Dan Rather; Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Connie Schultz, wife of Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, and author of, "...And His Lovely Wife;" former Virginia governor Mark Warner, Sally Bedell Smith with her book on the Clintons in the White House; Newsweek's Howard Fineman; sports, media and spa mogul Sheila Johnson; best-selling novelist David Baldacci; the Wall Street Journal's "wealth" columnist, Robert Frank; former CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson; and my own sister-in-law, presidential scholar Martha Joynt Kumar. Today Jon Moss begins taking reservations. Please note, reservations can be made only through Jon at 202.338.2000. Reservations made any other way - email to me, with other staff - will not be official and we can't guaranty your name will be on the list. So, please, make your reservations through Jon, who is available from 10-5 weekdays. This much stays the same: the fee is $35, all inclusive; the doors open at noon, the program begins at 12:30 and ends at 1:30. This, too, has not changed: we close in early 2009 to make way for a Gap, or a Verizon store or a Citibank, or the like. So, while we've got it, let's all enjoy our neighborhood pub at Wisconsin and M, an intersection that won't be the same after Nathans is gone. The food's never been better, the ambiance is authentic, the staff are friendly, the interviews timely, the is WiFi free, and the location, well, what can we say - the most important corner of the most powerful city in the world. Here's the September-October Q&A line-up for which Jon will now take reservations: Dan Rather - Thursday, Sept. 26... Connie Schultz - Thursday, Oct. 4... Howard Fineman - Thursday, Oct. 11... Gov. Mark Warner - Wednesday, Oct. 17... Robert Frank - Thursday, Oct. 25... Sally Bedell Smith - Wednesday, Oct. 31... Later in September we will announce dates and take reservations for the November and December lunches. Thanks for your support. We look forward to seeing you soon. Carol Joynt (8/15/07)

(Regarding Wednesday's Rant:) If you turn on your radio, you'll answer your own question. Victoria was ALREADY scheduled to host 12:30-3pm today!!! (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Cool! Victoria is great.....

Perhaps DCRTV could mention to the firm producing the television show that putting restrictions like "18-30 years old" in employment adds is bad practice, and could open the door for civil litigation. Tell these geniuses it is called "blatant age discrimination." But hey, these guys want to get the jollies by interviewing young "hotties," get dates with trashy chicks, act like "real" producers, and put together what appears to be a stupid show appealing to the lowest common denominator-in Baltimore, no less. Amateurs! (8/15/07)

Imus on WABC, WMAL and other Citadel, formerly ABC stations. Is this a great country or what? WMAL could do more "local" by putting Grandy & Andy on from 5 to 8 p.m. and getting rid of Levin. Same ole' same ole' and never changes. A waste of 2 hours. And maybe 630 AM could put something better on than Boring Norry Reruns from 10 pm for 3-hours. How bad radio is sometimes. (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Imus was on WTNT for years and got NO ratings. I can't imagine WMAL would want him.....

What kind of television production firm is so clueless that it has the idiocy to ask a media site to pull a news item? What kind of boneheaded idiocy and ignorance is that? From a television production company? Huh? What? You do not ask a media site to pull a news item--especially if it's factual. If the CraigsList ad was there on line, then it was there on line. If you report its presence accurately, that is called news reporting. A more intelligent move from the firm is to come clean on the ad, on the show, on what it's doing, and why it's calling media sites to remove news items! Weird! (8/15/07)

Memo to the Suits at Washington Post Radio: Call David Burd whereever he is today and tell him not to come back - EVER. David Aldridge subbing is an infinite improvement, a far better fit with Tony Kornheiser's audience and sensibilities than Burd ever was. Even the awful Victoria Jones is showing signs of life and wit. Aldridge has what Burd never will, which is credibility as a reporter, and that carries over into his confidence on the air and with his guests. Since he travels in many of the same circles as Tony, perhaps some of his regulars will return. He's funny and authoritative without desperately trying to prove himself as cool. Better yet, I didn't hear the word "posse" once. I realize that Aldridge has a real job and this won't last until Tony returns, but it's a wake-up call reminder of just how unsuited Burd is for the job. (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Look, don't get me wrong. I'm sure David Aldridge is like me - a brilliant man who is simply not cut out to be a radio personality. Just doesn't have "the voice." Victoria Jones did great last week as solo host on the day David Burd was out sick. She's a talented radio veteran who's worked at WMAL, she's funny and gets along great with Tony's radio gang. It's amazes me beyond belief that she wasn't selected to be Burd's subtitute host. I bet if she was a man she would have been. As for Burd, I realize he's trying to take the show into "fun" and "stress-free" territory, but not to even mention Karl Rove's exit Monday seemed a bit too "Leisure World-ish" for a news talk radio show based in a "Wonkland" like DC.....

Tom in Denton: Yeah, the show aired Saturday nights, but I heard it a couple of Saturday mornings ago, too. Maybe a rebroadcast? Anyway, checking WMZQ's site, the "America's Music" has it's own option in the pulldown menu under "HD Classic Country," while "Classic Country" is an option under the "Watch and Listen" tab, too. I'm streaming the digital channel right now, in fact. Didn't know about it until this morning, so *something* good has come of this mess. Oh, and contrary to the front-page news blurb here, Jim London is still on the WMZQ site. Just click on the "America's Music" option and you'll read about him. I think that's his photo, too, but I can't be sure. Nor do I know if that page will mysteriously vanish later today, after WMZQ management gets wind of this Mailbag message. Christian (8/15/07)

The fact that Ted Leonsis chose to publicly rip one of the talk shows on the station that carries his team's games suggests that he's tried repeatedly to get Andy Pollin and Steve Czaban to change their attitude toward hockey on Sports Reporters, but to no avail. As far as soccer's concerned, Reporters is hardly alone in ridiculing the sport and its fans - Jim Rome does it all the time on his national show and you may be hard pressed to find a sports talk station in any major US city that pays much attention to the local MLS team. Perhaps that's happening to some degree in LA now that David Beckham's playing for the Galaxy, but even there it's probably 98 percent celebrity gossip regarding the British superstar and his hot wife and two percent actual soccer analysis. I'll be surprised if Pollin and Czaban address Leonsis' points once they return from vacation - dealing with criticism of the show on the air is something they rarely if ever do. There's some reason to suspect that a key reason WTEM doesn't devote more time to the Nationals and Capitals is that the listenership for sports talk radio in Washington, DC is disproportionately African American compared with most other cities and blacks are perceived as having little interest in baseball and zero interest in hockey. If that's the case, the station's management may be making certain assumptions and generalizations that aren't justified. Somehow, I doubt that the racial or ethnic makeup of a particular team has a whole lot to do with who may or may not become a casual or devoted follower of that team. Fans tend to gravitate toward whoever's enjoying the most success on the field regardless of other factors. On another matter, the John Thompson show had Phil Wood on for his weekly appearance yesterday and failed to ask him to comment on Phil Rizzuto. While the story's clearly bigger in New York than Washington, for neither Thompson nor his sidekick Brian Mitchell to bring up the passing of the Hall of Fame shortstop and longtime Yankee broadcaster was a major oversight. Mike, Fairfax (8/15/07)

Hey speaking of Victoria Jones – do you know what she looks like? Is she hot? She has that hot British chick accent. I was listening once and she said that when she goes out with her friends she will send a note to a guy on a napkin. So I guess she’s single. Just wondering… Darren (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Here's a pic of Victoria (right) from our massive DCRTV Photo Archive.....

Well it looks like "Murph" from the popular "Murph, Miki, and Cowboy" show is coming back to take mornings on WZBH in Salisbury/Ocean City. The story broke this morning on WMDT-TV. It's about time they got something good in the morning. When MMC left, they never got anything close to good until Rex & Smitty came along. They should have stuck with them. Hopefully this will last with Murph. Lord knows they need the ratings back. (8/15/07)

On WMDT Channel 47 this morning on Delmarva Murph announced his comeback to radio. He was a radio star down here for 10 years on WZBH in the morning and he will be back soon. WZBH had it's worst ratings book ever, they need him back. This is a huge step in rebuilding the heritage rock station. (8/15/07)

Shawn Murphy returns to his old slot on the Salisbury-Ocean City airwaves doing a morning show starting August 27nd. Murphy and his entire morning team were fired after a failed on-air stunt resulted in criminal charges against one of his team. His old show was highly rated. Richard Marcus (8/15/07)

(*** When I see WGAR, I think of top-40 radio on 1220 kHz. Kids, these days! Dave's response: Larry Lujack and his "boogie checks".....***) Oookay... Hold on, kids. WGAR was NEVER Top 40! In 1970, they switched from old-line Middle-of-the-Road to an Oldies format that featured a Top 40-ish approach with a very young Don Imus on AM Drive. The last few years before they switched to Country, they began adding a few Adult/Contemporary currents. And, Larry Lujack never worked at 'GAR nor did he do "Boogie Checks." "Boogie Checks" were the sole province of John Records Landecker (and a few imitators who stole the idea, like Don Geronimo at WPGC!). And, Records truly IS his middle name! I believe it's also his Mom's maiden name. As for Lujack, he came east from KJR in Seattle to work at Boston's WMEX (1964), then to WCFL for a very brief turn at overnights (late 1965), on to afternoons at WLS (early 1966), then mornings at The Big 89 (c.1970), afternoons at WCFL (1973), back to mornings at WLS (1976). Since then, he's done some stuff on Clear Channel's WCKG and Real Oldies 1690 in Chi-town. - MW the Fact-Checker (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Well, I do remember Cleveland's 1220 as "top 40." Cruisin' over to the Capital Centre to see Rod Stewart or Elton John in dad's Olds Cutlass (which had an AM-only radio) flipping between 1220 WGAR, 770 WABC, 1000 WCFL, 800 CKLW, 1520 WKBW, and 890 WLS - if the post-sunset ionospheric conditions were favorable, of course. I searched Google and found a reference to "Larry Lujack, with the Clunk Letter .... on one of the great old rockers, WGAR-AM" at www.reelradio.com.....

Response to Christian: You were inquiring about the program on WMZQ "America's Country." The last I knew, it was on Saturday evenings; I got to hear it one night when I was off. Yeah..by all means..gotta have more time for some of these people that the country stations want us to believe are "country" artists..oh..don't get me started on that one! Tom in Denton, MD (8/15/07)

To the poster who can't read ratings. Uh no. Ch.9 doesn't beat anybody. Much less the Fox 5 Newsedge at 11. It's #2 in demo's and #1 many nights. (8/15/07)

Hey you, you Larry from Essex if anyone is agay for don and mike it's me the ....guy. I brought up don and mike with the" tired old queens" remark. I don't think DCRTV Dave has made much mention of them and seen little mention of them in mailbag for some time. I loved the don and mike show many moons ago but now geez it's just marking time till the end. With little of entertainment value in tv and radio for me these days ( now even the gotd9mn History Channel is running some ultimate fighting stuff, come on bring back Adolf)I had hoped that Don might put some effort into his last days but i agree with other mailbagger that he's got short timers disease at this point......oh man I checked that Dead People's Server page, Charles Lane died, he's one of them character actors you may not know by name but you see'em and go oh yeah www.newsfromme.com he was in "It's A Wonderful Life" This summer may be great for you death trifecta players but starts making me feel real old when all these tv folks of my yute are kicking....I heard mention of jerry horton(?) on don and mike show today, he ran the great Record Mart store in Old Towne Alexandria for a number of years, sure miss that place......speaking of Russell Johnson, didn't he appear on don and mike show a few times but as most things on the show it ended badly........I didn't know Victoria Jones had a regular radio gig these days, where? .....Larry Lujack has a blog, well it has one entry which is over a year old, note the p.s. he mentions Root Boy.... animalstoriescd.com... Larry of Fair Essex has tho ever partaken of Polok Johnny's (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Yeah, Victoria Jones can be heard on something called Washington Post Radio. With Donald Burd in late mornings. It comes in on 6090 kHz shortwave, right next to Radio Havana.....

Larry Lujack and his "boogie checks"....Nope, John "Records" Landecker did Boogie Checks. Bob in Sunny Tampa (8/15/07)

Dave's response: I realize "top 40" DJs of the 1970s were honest and truthful as the day is long, but Larry must have stole the concept, because he did them, too.....

In addition to his many years actually broadcasting Yankee games, Phil Rizzuto’s voice is still regularly heard on the radio in Meatloaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”, describing the guy’s progress from “1st base” to “2nd base” to “3rd base” until “STOP RIGHT THERE!” (8/15/07)

Dave's response: Phil's Money Store pitches will never be forgotten. Right up there with Crazy Eddie and Carvel's "Fudgy The Whale" ads.....
