I also heard more CHR leaning songs as opposed to the gold goo goo dolls, etc that they rotated heavily. I also heard WLIF playing Beyonce and Love Shack the other day. Could there be a shift in the works as Mix migrates to CHR and LIF migrates to a true AC/HOT AC??? Steve (6/20/07) Dave's response: That would make sense..... Hi Dave, This is a graphic in reference to Jim's question about that wacky 666 child's medicine. cgi.ebay.com... Robb in Capitol Heights (6/20/07) (Wasn't Hal Bruno head of ABC News? I heard him IDed on the radio yesterday as head of some firefighter's organization.) Hal was the head of the ABC News Political unit and has been a volunteer firefighter in Silver Spring for many years (and he's a huge bluegrass music fan). Great guy, now involved with the Memorial for Fallen Firefighters and I still think he lives in this area, not Charleston. If he's around, Hello, Hal! Jim (6/20/07) Dave, have I been gone that long? I found one of the funniest guys on earth I knew during my WBAL internship days online....It's Kirk McEwen from Kirk, Mark and Lopez BUT then I also spotted Mark Ondayko with him at a new station in B-More 105.7 Talk.....so I was now looking for Lopez only to google something about him being DEAD? I know he had a form of cancer but this was shocking to me. Imagine that I could have been dead too on May 25th but Gosh life is so damn short...and precious. My condolences to his family. When did all this happen? Those guy's station 98 Rock was directly across the hall from our WBAL newsroom and they were Soooooooo nice! Kemi in Ontario (6/20/07) Dave's response: Lopez passed away in 2005. Kirk and Mark left 98 Rock in late 2006, and debuted on WHFS in February 2007..... (Regarding a previous message:) From the website of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (www.firehero.org): "Throughout his distinguished career as a political analyst and journalist, Hal Bruno has remained active in the fire service community. He served as an active volunteer firefighter over a period of 40 years. He currently serves as a director of the Chevy Chase, Maryland Fire Department, and a member of the Friendship Fire Association of the District of Columbia Fire & Rescue Service. He has written the monthly "Fire Politics" column for Firehouse magazine since the magazine was founded in 1976. A professional journalist for over 50 years, he retired in 1999 as Political Director of ABC News. Before joining ABC, he worked for Newsweek magazine for 18 years in several top editorial positions. He moderated the vice presidential debate during the 1992 campaign and frequently has appeared on national network political discussion panels. Mr. Bruno has won numerous awards for his work in journalism and the fire-rescue service. In 1995, the Congressional Fire Services Institute selected him as its “Fire Service Person of the Year,” and in 1999 he received the President's Award from the International Association of Fire Chiefs. He has been honored with the “Illini Achievement Award” by the University of Illinois and, in 1999, was named “Press Veteran of the Year” by the Chicago Press Veterans Association. Graphics often fail to load, and pop-ups/unders often fuck up one's browser while trying to read an article. But at least they don't have those horrid HP "turd ads" (that's what I call 'em) that block the top of articles for 30 seconds like the DC Post's website does..... (6/20/07) I randomly stopped into Dave & Buster's at Arundel Mills Mall last Thursday for dinner and was humored to see a 105.7 HFS "appearance" set-up on their entertainment stage featuring Kirk McEwen. This is a gig that was apparently advertised on station spots and on the station website as a weekly event for the month of June. There were about two dozen people in the dining area and another handful in the bar area. There was clearly no one there because of the presence of "Baltimore's #1 Morning Show DJ". I've seen several such promos in my life, and realize you're not always going to attract a huge crowd, but I think the lack of concern at this appearance is the same reason the KMS sucks. The setup was basically a table with two small HFS banners and a tinsel table skirt that was falling off. The HFS crew also provided the music.... a powered speaker hooked to a CD player playing an entire Bob Marley greatest hits CD (would it have been so hard to throw 15 songs on a CD-R?), and the icing on the cake - in a multi-million dollar sports arcade…they brought a $5 mini basketball set for a "contest" (shoot a basket, get some crappy prize). It was so sad that they finally announced "You don't need to play a game, just come up and get a prize". Whatever appearance fee Kirk was getting was certainly too much, ditto for their HFS contract. Note to D&B: I would have had a better time with some satellite music and a free drink. (6/20/07) Seeing the picture of Linda Kelly, brings back the good old days. I seem to remember, and I hope I am in error, that she was ill. Does anyone know how she is doing these days. - Bob in College Park (6/20/07) Congrats to PQ who correctly answered my trivia question, who recorded "Tongue in Cheek". The band was Sugarloaf. I agree, that was a great tune. In fact, it was a better song than Green Eyed Lady, although it's one of my favorites. Ed Jones, Bel Air MD (6/20/07) Kemi, just stop. You're a second-rate hack, and if you'd like to find out what that is, YOU can go to "dictionay.com" for a definition and the correct spelling (try using your spellcheck, nitwit). Journalist, my ass. Dave, I'm begging you: Limit this Kemi 'tard to one post per day. THAT would definitely get you a donation from this lurker. (6/20/07) That's a very valid point re: the live absence of all the Junkies on the air this morning. Where were the other two? Frankly, given EB and Lurch's oft-stated penchant for getting "hammered," (recall EB's recent car wreck), it is fair to wonder whether the "sickness" was illness or booze. (6/20/07) Ed Jones: "Tongue in Cheek" was the follow-up to "Green Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf. That was GREAT single that got a lot of airplay but just didn't click, a real "turntable hit." PQ in PA. Though Americans are the only ones in the world known to spell "short-cut" English, examples like "rite" for right, "thru" for through, and so on, you have the nerves to insult a Nigerian, an english speaking BRITISH (I think they created ENGLISH...duh!) colonized country. Unfortunately my kids discovered on our move back home that many things were spelt wrong in America because they had never seen them spelt like that....(Proper English). Pls go to www.tribune.com.ng, Nigeria's pioneer newspaper and read the story up there about the labor strike over gasoline and see how "labor and liter" are really spelt! You may look like a fool when you travel abroad and see how everyone writes the date too. Today is 20/6/07 IN CANADA. Good day and let's go back to broadcasting issues on this mailbag. Kemi Lane, Ontario, Canada (6/20/07) Answer to my trivia question, who recorded "A Piece of Paper" was Gladstone. Congrats to Joyce Conroy who had the correct answer. I finally stumped Rusty (smile). Rusty stumped me with who sang lead on Sail on Sailor. I always thought it was Brian Wilson. Now another one, who recorded "Tongue in Cheek". Clue: This song didn't go above the mid 60's on the Hot 100 in 1971. This band had a top 10 hit in 1970 and another one in 1975. Ed Jones, Bel Air MD (6/20/07) Tony Kornheiser, pontificating on the essence of "genius," indirectly compared Bob Woodward to Albert Einstein on this morning's Washington Post Radio show. Almost heaved my Cheerios! Tony, please don't hype your paper. We know it owns your soul, but it makes for a dreadfully boring show, especially now that you don't have Idol and the Sopranos to endlessly talk about any longer. Jim (6/20/07) A Rumor: Could we see "Triple X Oldies"? With 1) Snyder's purchase of Dick Clark productions and its "American Bandstand" library, 2) the ratings challenges of his weak-signaled Sports Talkers competing against relatively full-signaled WTEM, 3) the lack of a full time Oldies station in DC, and 4) Snyder's deal to put Redskins on WBIG, a flip to 50s-60s-70s Oldies at Triple X might make sense. The station's signal problems would be less acute because the audience would essentially have no other station to turn to (BIG isn't really "Oldies" anymore) and therefore seek out the weak signals, It might make CC (Snyder's new partner for Redskins Games) happy to remove a competitor to WTEM, and would likely be cheaper to run than the Sports format, which has some expensive local talk programming. And with WBIG carrying the games, Triple X is less important as a flagship for the Redskins, as most people will probably listen on 100.3. Not saying it's going to happen... just a thought that it might make sense. (6/20/07) "Dave's response: "Sentance"? Just showing that you're "educated," too, Paul?" You caught that "error" yet why haven't you questioned this woman and her grammer? It looks like one of those Nigerian scam emails. Can we also stop "Name That Tune" please? Are there not message boards for people stuck in the past? Perhaps we write about the 1969 Orioles or the 1973 Senators. A few minutes later Brett mentions that because EB and Lurch are sick, they are running a best of. Uh, isn't there two other hosts? Two hosts with a decade of experience each, plus brett and CK adding comments periodically isn't enough to fill air time? That's pathetic. Most shows are one and two man acts but these guys can't pull it off for one day? Reaaaal professional Donkeys. Well, Czabes back from his break.-peace. According to their website, they'd like to hear from people whose lives were saved by driving an SUV or truck. (I love that - save your life, but help kill the planet!) They even have their own special "bill of rights" www.suvoa.com (I wonder if their national flag is like the usual red, white and blue - but with fifty little white gas pump nozzles in the blue field, instead of stars?) Here's the ad, in case you missed it on the radio www.suvoa.org (6/20/07) Once Daniel Synder and his group gets their hands on Dick Clark Productions, I wonder what they are going to do with that restaurant chain Dick Clark's American Bandstand Grill? That part of the pie is not exactly doing great business as the ones in both in Michigan ( the one featured in that Michael Moore flick Bowling for Columbine ) and the one just outside of Philadelphia are now defunct. Dittos with the one just outside of Kansas City. That place just closed last month and quite suddenly too. I believe there is an AB Grill in the airports in Salt Lake City and Indianapolis but Iheard both they are still open and they are not. I do remember when these places first opened there were plans to open a whole bunch of them across the country including a few in this region ( Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Rockville, Baltimore and Martinsburg ) but of course that never did happened. Back to Dick Clark Productions on the TV end, somewhere awhile back I read his company owns the rights to just about everything that aired on Philadelphia's old WFIL-TV channel 6 at the time that station was the flagship for his American Bandstand ( everything prior to that show's move to LA in 1964 ). I do remember last year when someone uploaded a clip of the old Philadelphia classic TV kids show Sally Starr on You Tube only to have that clip removed "at the request of Dick Clark Productions". Same thing happened when someone uploaded a clip of an old WFIL station ID from the early 60s. A friend of mine told me there is no way Clark owns this WFIL-TV stuff from that period of time other than Bandstand itself. Of course I disagree. If Clark did not own those rights, his production comapny wouldn't have had the power to take down those clips off of YouTube Another thing about Clark, just before his stroke I remember a story going around about how hi was pissed that a pic of him was featured in a book. I think it was some history book about an amusement park in Cincinatti ( Kings Island? Coney Island Cincinatti ? ). Back in the days when rock'n' roll concerts did the amusement park circuit ( guess some still do this day ), Clark put on a show there and some fan took a pic of Clark signing autographs. That pic made that book, but from what I heard Clark tried to sue to get that pic taken out even though it was a pic done by a fan, not by some memebr of the local media. Guess Clark doesnt want his pic taken unless it is done by his own people. Anyway Not sure if he succeeded of not since it wasn't long after I heard this i when he had his stroke. I myself can't see him winning that round. (6/20/07) /\ June 20 Messages /\ ![]() \/ June 19 Messages \/ 400 North Capitol Street. So what? (6/19/07) Please find attached the letter from the Regional Director to the former TVS employees which were mailed out of Region 5 today..... Dear former TVS employees: You have heard a lot about the CNN/TVS case now set for trial by the National Labor Relations Board. NABET Local 11 and Local 31 have been the exclusive collective bargaining representatives of employees working at CNN's New York and Washington, D. C. bureaus in bargaining units that were certified by the NLRB following secret ballot elections. Thereafter , for many years CNN and NABET executed and maintained collective- bargaining agreements covering terms and conditions of employment of these employees. This past March, the General Counsel of the NLRB authorized me to issue an unfair labor practice complaint against CNN and TVS. As a CNN and/or former TVS employee , you are entitled to know the basic allegations contained in the complaint. The complaint alleges that CNN and TVS , as joint employers under federal labor law, were obligated to bargain with NABET-CWA Locals 11 and 31 before terminating the TVS contracts transferring bargaining unit work , and discharging TVS employees. The complaint also alleges that CNN was a successor employer to TVS with certain other obligations, and that CNN unlawfully limited its hiring of former TVS employees. To remedy CNN's unlawful conduct, the complaint seeks an Order requiring CNN to recognize and bargain with NABET Locals 11 and 31 , to give jobs to any former TVS employees found to have been unlawfully terminated or refused a job, and to restore all of the more favorable terms and conditions of employment including all seniority benefits, that were in effect when CNN took its unlawful actions. No doubt, CNN will contact you in an effort to convey its side of the story. After all, CNN is in the news business, and it has the right to communicate its position to you. This matter is set for trial this fall. The trial is a search for truth. The truth is found when witnesses testify under oath before an Administrative Law Judge in a formal proceeding, free from interference , restraint or coercion. Over the next few months , NLRB attorneys may contact you to discuss the facts giving rise to this case. Your voluntary cooperation with the NLRB is protected by federal law. It is unlawful for an employer to take action against you for speaking to an NLRB attorney or for testifying in NLRB proceedings. If you have any questions or concerns about this matter, please do not hesitate to contact one of the NLRB attorneys assigned to this case: Thomas P. McCarthy (and) Carol A. Baumerich... - Wayne R. Frequently, the inability to reach a website, or websites, can be caused by a DNS server (which looks up and connects with an internet address) glitch via your own service provider. These outages can resolve themselves within seconds, minutes, hours, or days. Very confusing and frustrating..... Did Dick Clark exploit rock music for his own monetary gain? You're a freaking idiot. Does everyone who plays any kind of music have to like it? Do we get paid to play it? Does the government give you a check every month because you're to stupid to hold a job? Yes....oh...I know him...He does like it...Probably one of the most deceit people anyone could ever meet. (6/19/07) Nice (Washington Post) typos Capt. Nearly vomited at the part about people being killed because of smaller cars. If this add is serious, it is one of the most obnoxious to come down the pike in a while. Shawn in DC (6/19/07) Dave's response: While I didn't address the content of the ad (and I do agree with you there), it just strikes me as odd that a lobbying group would spend so much dough on a radio campaign that sounds soooooo laughably bad. I mean, how much trouble would it have been to produce spots that sound conversational..... 400 North Capitol Street is the only commercial building in DC with a full window view of the US Capitol dome. NBC moving ops to Nebraska Ave gives their news set a full window view of what, the cathedral next door? Well, maybe they want a cathedral in the background of the news set as a gift for President Bush; a"Holy War" look to the news when they report on the dozens of Americans killed each week in Iraq. Rock On! (6/19/07) Geez, Dick Clark is selling off everything these days! I believe he sold off a lot of his memoribilia last fall at auction. What gives, is Mr. Clark estranged from his children? Wonder what the tax bill is going to be on all this stuff! I for one have not been so enamored of Mr.Clark, did he really like rock music or just exploited it for his own monetary gain? I believe the late comic Bill Hicks called Mr. Clark the auntiechrist? So really with this sale you got the auntiechrist giving it up to an even more wicked devil. Does this sale mean the end of Mr. Clark making his annual appearances at Times Square? And what about Clark's American Bandstand Theater in Branson, home of Paul Revere &The Raiders plus Gary Lewis & The Playboys, will that likely be shuttered for one of Lil' Danny's swell idears?...........Wasn't Tracey Neale married at one time or another? He had a first-class operation at WAVA--the area's first all-news station and among the first in the nation. Sure beat what WTOP is now newswise. Wish WAVA had stayed like that. Station got worse with each ownership change. OTOH, I miss the formats of just about every other radio station that existed at that time -- explains why I listen to satellite now. WETA is probably the only terrestrial station left that IMNSHO is worth listening to. (6/19/07) I'm pretty sure Denise Oliver is a Los Angeles-based radio consultant. Know for a fact she's still hot. (6/19/07) (re: Canada vs. Kemi). The basic cable TV in Montreal carries the NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox/CW, and PBS affiliates from Burlington, Vermont, and Plattsburgh, New York. (6/19/07) re:"Kemi's been through a very rough time in Nigeria"---I don't believe her for a second. Drama queen. (6/19/07) To be exactly accurate; except for writing "Montreal" instead of "Ontario" in her post, Kemi Lane is mostly correct. Ontario does border Minnesota and Michigan (but not, actually, Wisconsin I don't think). Thunder Bay, Paul Schaffer's home town, is a few miles from the Minnesota border, in fact. So except for a typo (which does happen to all of us now and then) she is correct. And from Toronto, one can get all the Buffalo stations, and certainly on Rogers Cablevision. Of course, when a Canadian network has the same show at the same time, the Canadian presentation is shown on the cable channel supposedly carrying the Buffalo station. Enjoy..... AH, Dave c'mon, doncha know parody when you hear it? Rant about the spot from "SUV Owners of America." So, where did you hear it, I want to tune in. (6/19/07) Dave's response: It's running every five minutes on WTOP..... Noticed they were taking down the WAVA tower yesterday. Although I ever liked the station since it dropped its all-news format in the late '70 when Arendell sold both the AM & the FM (and they'll continue spewing their homophobic venom from another site), I hated to see the tower go. Was nice to see the three towers out my window in the distance, especially at night, since they were kinda ruined for daytime viewing when the international orange was dropped for white -- now only two [the old AT&T Long Lines (now just AT&T) and the Dumont (now WETA-FM) towers. And that AT&T one looks like it has lots of rust on it. Hope its days aren't numbered as well. Shot some stills and video to reminisce. Now a good chunk of the AT&T site (much of it sold to a developer) that had the offending anchor and radials will host 16 or so multi-million dollar homes, probably to be occupied by NIMBY yuppies who will rail against the remaining two towers in the area. The owners of the WAVA tower wanted to replace it with a magnificant self-supporting one; but NIMBYs prevailed. Bet you most the anti-tower NIMBYs moved over there after any towers there were built. They were always vocal at County Board meetings everytime anything was to be done with either the WAVA or the WETA towers. (Hey there's a large estate in my neighborhood that could be perfect for a tower site at Wilson & McKinley, hint, hint--maybe build a tower and preserve the buildings). Now a good chunk of the AT&T site (much of it sold to a developer) that had the offending anchor and radials will host 16 or so multi-million dollar homes, probably to be occupied by NIMBY yuppies who will rail against the remaining two towers in the area. When AT&T wanted to sell that land, the County should have bought it for a park and left the "offending" anchor and radials in place. Perplexes me that the original owners of the WAVA tower never got it on paper regarding the guy anchors and ground radials with AT&T Long Lines at the time. Handshake agreements were passe even back in WARL days. (6/19/07) Dave's response: It's "Arthur Arundel." I worked for his local newspaper chain fresh out of college. Nice man and a good Democrat. (6/19/07) Dave's response: I heard him on WTOP just yesterday..... Hey lets not take too many shots at our friends at MASN. I agree the coverage of the Orioles firing of Sam Perlozzo was not the best that MASN could have come up with, but at least they got it on. I for one enjoy the Nats pre and post game shows with Johnny Holliday and Ray Knight. Those Two guys are terrific together. You get Baseball talk, insight, interviews some funny stuff between the two, and it's clear they want to Nationals to win!!! Head and shoulders above what the Orioles put out. It's great to have baseball back in Washington, and I think all of us Nats fans should be happy MASN has stepped up with good coverage. Enjoy it!!!! JT (6/18/07) Just got through watching the O's presser on Perlozzo getting fired. A second rate manager got fired by second rate team, and it was shown on second rate network, MASN. If you think CSN looks like public-access, then the MASN broadcast of the presser looked like a high-school production. Bad lighting and no direction during the telecast. This goes along with their other bad programming from El Riggo's z-fest, Anita (does she anything about sports?) Marks, and two of the worst shows ever put on a regional sports network, O's and Nats Access. And the pre and post games shows are just barely different. Sincerely DCSPORTSTV (6/18/07) RE: [ " Please, let's put this to bed! The plots generated by recnet that were attached to a previous message do not factor in terrain " ]....... Correct, the recnet plots don't take into account terrain which is much more favorable from TV Hill towards DC than from Kingsville, MD due to Baltimore city's high skyline and terrain. So I fail to see how terrain would impede this new signal. From TV Hill there is practically not a single obstruction towards DC. If anything, it would improve it above and beyond the recnet plots. Yes, I've read the FCC app. I'm sure the numbers are correct, but I can't see how it's possible the signal towards DC will be worse after this upgrade despite some of the claims. I guess we'll see quite soon, since this will be an easy upgrade to an existing tower. Dave, when you say “There's something's wrong when the DC area's top-rated TV station - Channel 4/WRC - wins only two awards,” your analysis is off. Channel 4’s paltry award total reflects all the cost-cutting they’ve done. They don’t invest in their product, their news gathering operations have been gutted, they recycle news to the point that some stories run for two, sometimes even three days in a row with minimal updates. Morale is horrible. Management – from whom loyalty is expected – treats employees like used Kleenex, tossing them away on a whim. Viewership trends are a lagging indicator; already the numbers, when extrapolated, show some cracks. Look out below. (6/18/07) Congrats to the entire staff of the News Department at radio station WBAL1090AM that trained me as a News Intern during my schooldaze on their winning the "overall excellence" award from the RTNDA and also my girl Anne Kramer on her winning story. Can someone pls wake up Mr Arbitron to check on his numbers? Kemi Lane, Toronto, Canada (6/18/07) Despite what you say , the local Emmys are not for sale and no one is buying them. They are earning them. I would like to point out that 87 Emmys were awarded. No offense meant to the hard working folks at WTTG, but 16 hardly sounds like a sell out to me. WTTG does submit a substantial number of entries but as the saying goes, 'You can't hit a home run if you don't get up to bat.' Unless you are too myopic to notice, there is a lot of excellent work done at many outlets, tv stations and otherwise, in our community. Entries and results are given the utmost scrutiny by our Chapter and I don't think you will find a more conscientious Awards Committee anywhere. For someone who spends a lot of time writing about the broadcast community, it might be fitting to be more supportive of its efforts. Fran Murphy, President, National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (6/18/07) Dave's response: I'm sure that many of the Emmy award winners are solid journalists and richly deserve their awards. But there's something wrong when the DC area's top-rated TV news station - Channel 4/WRC - wins only two awards, and the less-watched competition wins so many more. Perhaps there could be a better, more fair nominating process that would recognize all (!) deserving TV personalities, and not just those who work for stations that submit truckloads of entries..... Rick Taylor's Roots Rock Radio Show rrradio.com (6/18/07) (Last time a decent FM stick in Frederick sold it was for 10 million). 103.9 isn't worth anywhere near $10 Million, but you are missing the bigger point. It isn't like WTOP needs 103.9 (remember when they moved to the FM dial?). Radio one didn't need a Frederick stick, considering they were putting together a black/urban gospel station. so I would say the earlier poster is correct...sounds like the Mormons could have gotten about $10 Million more on the total deal...but decided to sell to Radio One instead. I agree; I would add the mid and late 60s to that. My own observation is that the whole country has slid into a depression (emotional, not financial). I would place the start of it around the start of the first Bush administration and it is still worsening. (This is not necessarily to blame any one administration; the lack of any real leadership over these past 20 years may be a symptom and not a cause.) Corporate oppression? Perhaps. Safe and bland are apt descriptions and certainly would lead to depression. Sadly, I don't see any potential change in our situation on the horizon. But they don't pay attention at all to the programming side of things, a la WKYS and WPGC-FM. Not a word about Olivia Fox returning to KYS or Big Tigger to PGC. Both are fairly major local radio personalities. Nothing on the administrative changes at either station. The Post is a very good newspaper. The main news section, the business section, even the sports section - all solid. The weak link is, clearly, the Style section. Some good stories, but the overall editing, a la spotty local media coverage, is pretty lame. And don't get me started on that pathetic "gossip" column..... In fact, Lee has recently uncovered a wealth of historical newspaper articles about the station(s) which will be trickling onto the site over the course of the coming weeks. Check back often. (6/17/07)Heh heh...I just spent a few minutes up on radiolocator.net and just for fun, punched in to see the predicted daytime contour for 700 WDMV. It shows fringe coverage more than a hundred miles north almost all the way to State College, PA! I sputtered a little when I saw that, but then noticed the website's disclaimer which reads, "This image is intended solely for entertainment purposes." Sure made ME laugh. (6/17/07) Everybody forgot! HAPPY FATHERS DAY! To all of the radio dads. Hope you had a good day. HAPPY FATHERS DAY! Doug (6/17/07) (Re: O&A's return to XM was reported with the silence it deserved and reflective of the fact that these two guys have no cache in the radio industry anymore [6/16]) ... Okay then, if O&A have "no cache" - a point with which I don't disagree - then who does have that pull, that certain something? Imus' gaffe spoke more to the FCC and race than about the I-man himself, and Stern certainly isn't on anyone's radar outside of a Sirius listener ... Does anybody who cracks a mic these days actually matter? (6/17/07) Dave: One thought that came to mind today and your reply to the guy commenting that FCC Killed radio confirmed to me was does anyone have a favorite radio station anymore? Like Borders, all of radio in this town is pasteurized and homogenized. I have fond memories of WEEL, WPGC, WRC and dx'ing to WCFL and WABC and others as a boy. Kind of like people say, you can never go back home. (6/17/07) To the guy criticizing Campbell Brown, she put in her time and deserved a shot. As for Lester Holt, NBC had better back up the Brinks truck to his bank and give him whatever he wants because when Couric hits the skids, he becomes the hottest anchor commodity in the market, even more than Anderson Cooper. Finally, with Amy…she's just waiting for the other show to drop on Vierra and the job is hers. I expect Merideth to be back on "The View" by this time next year. - Bob from College Park (6/17/07) To "Capt." Tom Conroy, Brother you really look happy in your new digs. There is less than 2kW toward the DC are, even as low as 1.3kW over a wide arc. There are a number of very directional FM stations in the DC/Balto area. The stated powers are only in the "best" direction, which is a narrow arc in some cases. Look up some stations on the FCC's FM Query. (6/17/07) I gotta say, as an O&A fan, those guys are on a downward slide. Sure the O&A pests make them look strong, but it is all an illusion. They are clearly in the twilight of their careers. They just seem "flat"...I really think the FCC killed a lot of radio... (6/17/07) Dave's response: Don't want to sound too much like an "old guy" here, but it's kind of sad. It used to be that the music scene was so alive with lots of cool independent record shops all over the DC area, a la Penguin Feather, Waxie Maxies, and Kemp Mill. And the great Tower Records. And loads of cool small independent other kinds of shops in Georgetown. And cool locally-owned and operated radio, from Georgetown's WGTB to the old free-form WHFS and Warrenton's WEER, as well as the old WKTK and WAYE. Howard Stern on DC101 and later WJFK. And Don and Mike in their youthful prime back on WAVA. Real local bookshops like Olssons (which, thankfully, still survives). There's a certain "sameness" in every Barnes And Noble or Borders, whether it's in San Francisco or Gaithersburg. So much of the cool past is gone, now. Yeah, downloading audio files is more convenient then getting off your ass and wading through the stacks of platters. And, sure, XM's got half a dozen cool rock channels (yeah, lots of tunes, but little "station" personality). And amazon.com's got just about every DVD or CD in print. Comcast offers a half dozen different versions of MTV, but, you know what - they all lack the vitality and spunk of the very first years of MTV in the early 1980s. It just quite ain't the same. The excitement's missing. So much has gone (or is quickly going) "corporate" - and that also means "safe" and "bland." It's just not the same, any more. I don't know. Maybe it's just me getting older. But the whole American/DC music/media/cultural scene just seemed so much more "alive" and "vital" back in the 1970s and 1980s and even the early 1990s. Whoops, I guess I got carried away here. I will now get off my soapbox..... R&R recently had a great story about the dreams, (or nightmares) of broadcasters. Many years ago, my dream had to do with taking a new job, but going into a studio where I could not find a song anywhere, nor could I use the equipment. Certainly there were many dreams of sleeping thru sign-on of a daytime AM. After the change at WCAO in 1991, I pretty much got away from music radio for a number of years. When I moved to SW Va and got back into the business, it was a huge change. No more carts, albums, or CD's. Everything changed, with Scott System, voice-tracking, no mod monitors in the studio, and a big learning curve. Almost the same as dream #1. I bet you have your stories too! Tom Conroy (6/17/07)Hy "Vincent in Triangle", "He's Gonna Step On You Again" was part of WEEL's playlist back in August of 1971 and was recorded by an unknown (as far I know) named John Kongos. Rusty Gibson (6/17/07) I don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet, but I see that Smooth Jazz 104.3 has been granted a construction permit to move from the White Marsh/Perry Hall area to TV hill in Baltimore. They are nearly doubling their HAAT to 965 feet but are coming down to 13K watts from 32K watts. I didn’t think they could move due to being short spaced from Praise 104.1. Any comments? (6/17/07) Another "name the artist/tune," and again it's from 1971. The song was called "He's Gonna Step On You Again," and got some airplay on WEEL in Fairfax, although I don't recall WEAM, WPGC or WINX playing it. Do you know? -- Vincent in Triangle (6/17/07) I have little to no sympathy for Campbell Brown not being chosen to replace Katie Couric. And I think it's quite unprofessional to put her displeasure out there in the media..Ya didn't get the job. Deal with it or move on, which maybe she's now decided to do. I personally find her quite annoying and totally unwatchable on the weekend morning show. She and Lester Holt just don't do it for me. However, the news that Campbell may be going to CNN must make Amy Robach quite elated since she's been filling in quite a bit for Campbell on the weekends..But, hey Amy, calm down..I'm sure you can handle the weekend gig. BUT, I think you're trying a little bit tooo hard to get that position.. (6/17/07) Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but it appears that WGTS (91.9 FM) is operating a translator on 106.1 in the Baltimore area. And in the Baltimore market, the late Hearst newspaper The Baltimore News American owned WBAL-AM (1090), WBAL-FM (97.9), & WBAL-TV (11) and The Baltimore Sun owned WMAR-TV (2) & WMAR-FM (106.5). I guess Baltimore is an anomaly in that Hearst was never forced to divest any of the 3 properties (in violation of FCC rules?) unlike in most other markets. Anyone know why that was? (6/16/07) Dave's response: The Washington Post wasn't "forced" to sell its TV and radio properties in the DC market. Obviously, it felt that the FCC was leaning in direction of prohibiting co-owned newspaper and broadcast outlets in the same market and voluntarily unloaded its local stations. While the AMer got sold, the FM was donated to Howard University, and the TV was traded to the Detroit News for its station there. There are a number of cases, like the New York Times continuing to own its it radio stations in NYC (WQXR-FM and WQXR-AM, later WQEW), which remained "grandfathered" on a more-or-less defacto basis..... O&A's return to XM was reported with the silence it deserved and reflective of the fact that these two guys have no cache in the radio industry anymore. That single was actually pretty good but stiffed-out in late '71. I have a promo copy of it somewhere. PQ in PA. (6/16/07) Re your 6/10 rant: Actually, one reason you'll never hear a New York Times Radio format on WCBS is that The Times has owned its own radio station, WQXR, for more than a half-century. Just as the New York Daily News no longer needed legendary AM station WNEW (Eleven Three Oh) to carry its news bulletins once The News created its own TV station (WPIX) (it later bought the radio station at 101.9 in the mid-1960s.) Of course, Eleven Three Oh then created one of the great local radio or TV news departments in New York history. (6/16/07) Dave's response: NYC's 1130 AM was once owned by Metromedia, which did the fantastic nostalgic format of WNEW-AM on the frequency. And 102.7 FM was Metromedia's fabulous rocker WNEW-FM. Which CBS managed to sink. As for the Washington Post, it, too, owned stations. In the DC market it had WTOP-TV (9), WTOP-AM (1500), and WTOP-FM (96.3). It sold (donated or traded away) all three outlets in the 1970s. And the old Washington Star newspaper owned WMAL-TV (7), WMAL-AM (630), and WMAL-FM (107.3)..... Dave - I'd also like to wish Bob Duckman a happy 40th radio anniversary. It's quite an accomplishment, especially considering the sweeping changes radio has and continues to go through. Rusty Gibson (6/16/07) Congratulations to Bob Duckman. I loved WASH's "Sunday Night Thing of the Past" especially when Bob was hosting. Although, I have noticed that the NTA, Nigerian Television Authority feed via Fairfax's MHz Networks and digital Channel 56/WNVC, carried on on Comcast's digital channel 677 in the DC area, is now sporting a "technical difficulties" message. I guess that's because of the strife back in Nigeria. So sad..... Who cares what AM 700 and 1160 do in the daytime? They could be making hot monkey love in a church and no one would notice. Both are lightbulbs at night. The whole point is the nighttime signal, that's where WAGE & WXTR's AM upgrades can help them the most. Both stations could end up more powerful at night in much of the DC market than WTWP 1500 or WTEM 980 or possibly even WMAL in WXTR's case. With 1500's nighttime signal mostly so far east of the DC market, maybe The Washington Post should consider just simulcasting BBC radio for the Welsh coast of the UK! HAha! PS: The local signal colors (red & orange) are baseball team colors Dave, but I'm sure you knew that. :-) (6/16/07) The new proposed WAGE AM 1190 FCC app doesn't propose a new nighttime signal from its new proposed Dulles location (the 50,000 watt daytime signal will be a MONSTER from there though, completely blanketing the Washington market and a good bit of Baltimore too), so I thought...... Hey, let's see... (see pic) This is based on the WBIS 1190 FCC already approved nighttime signal for Baltimore at 7000 watts. Keep in mind, DC is farther from New York's WLIB than Baltimore is. Of course, I'm not a broadcast engineer, nor do I play one on TV, and as always, please, no wagering. :-) PS: The Baltimore signal plots are purple and orange, the DC plots Burgundy and red. Enjoy. :-) (6/16/07)Dave's response: Hey, both 700 and 1160 have great daytime AM signals into the DC metro and look at how great they do in the ratings - NOT! The one you're talking about is the famous movie director of such pics as "The DaVinci Code" and "Apollo 13." Not bad for that little kid from Mayberry..... Who is the world made the decision for Maryland to drop WMAL for WJFK??? I'll give you one guess. Most likely by someone with no knowledge whatsoever about Radio or a Radio stations signal!!! WJFK's signal is almost nonexistent in Maryland. I live in College Park and can hardly pick up that station. I believe the University deserves better than that what they are getting. My dial is always set to the Terps station for Football and Basketball...now I'm not so sure. Can anything be done, can anyone be called or e mailed? Does anyone at Maryland really care??? (6/16/07) Opie & Anthony do benefit by getting attention they might not get just because CBS is pushing them in place of Howard Stern. If Howard ever returned to regular radio, they'd be kicked to the curb in a second. Howard Stern made a good decision for himself, going to Sirius, financially, as well as for the freedom to control the content of his show without threats of FCC fines. Maybe satellite radio will last long enough that he can finish his career off without considering a return to regular radio, where he would probably still demolish his competition. Dave, The most entertaining, hilarious thing on the web, tv or radio is the current saga of Bonneville ego masturbation going on in the mailbag. As you know, you and I have not usually agreed. Laura Ingraham remains from 9 AM-12 noon, but Dr. Laura has been moved up to the 12 noon - 3 PM slot, meaning that WVIE is no longer running her live. New to the 3-6 PM slot is consumer advocate Clark Howard, who to the best of my knowledge has not been on Baltimore or DC anytime recently. Sally Jessy Raphael (7-9 PM) and Dr. Joy Browne (9 PM - 12 midnight) round out the schedule, with the 6 PM hour used by different local shows. The loser was Tammy Bruce, booted to the doldrums of Saturday night. BTW, have Clark Howard and Dr. Neil Clark Warren been in the same room together? Just a thought. (But Bonneville's recent moves.....to get "in bed" with the Washington Post are among the dumbest radio moves ever seen in the DC radio market. In my humble opinion, anyway.....) Dave, you are the first guy to complain about how dull and unexciting radio is in DC. So Bonneville tries a bold experiment, and you are all over them. Nobody should try anything new or different because they will be subject to the constant wrath of of Dave Hughes. they should be applauded for trying something different. I suspect the print partner, not the radio partner, is the reason it is a generally dull radio station. heck, it's a dull newspaper. The Bonneville guys sure know how to get ratings on WTOP. Dave, I disagree with your frequent anger at Bonneville but I still love your site. Lem (6/15/07) Dave's response: I know, you hate me but love the site. I get that all the time..... Funny how the return of O&A went largely unnoticed by the media. When will the legion (or is it platoon) of pests realize that their heroes are merely legends in their own minds. The broader media industry cares little about them and the (laughable) 5,000 cancellations XM clocked speak volumes for the lack of interest in the program. (6/15/07) The 106.7/105.7 choice for U of MD Terps sports is certainly a curious one. When I lived in the U of Maryland dorms many many years ago, one of the things I remember (because I had a brand new $400 stereo & 5 foot high speakers in my room) was that 105.7 (QSR/Q105), 105.9 (WCXR), 106.5 (WMKR?), & 106.7 (WBMW?) were all difficult to pick up in my dorm room without static. Add to that WYPR 88.1 Baltimore upgrading its power towards the campus and potentially interfering with WMUC and geez, did they not consult even one engineer on this? Sounds like the brilliant people that don't & didn't care about WMUC or RTVF at Maryland have made another brilliant move. DOH! PS: Radio-locator plots are theoretical. That 106.7 plot does not take into account the enormous adjacent channel interference from 106.5. Yes, the signal really is that strong in those places, but if you could plot a static-free line over top of that map, you'd be shocked. Nope you don't have to have a cheapo radio to experience this problem. PREDICTION: In a year's time, they'll release a press release stating the ratings are higher (using fuzzy math like the O's & CBS did). Can't wait. :-) (6/15/07) WBAL 11 in Baltimore is ruining the U.S. Open Golf coverage. They are such label whores they have to plaster their logo on the top right of the screen and it blocks the players score. (6/15/07) “This trio had a top 10 hit in 1971”…could it have been the prestigious law firm of Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds? Norman North (6/15/07) I grant that the Post not mentioning the new Maryland radio affiliation is completely inexplicable. It's not the first omission of its kind, though. The Washington Post didn't mention Virginia Tech switching affiliations to Triple X ESPN Radio or for that matter, George Mason men's basketball broadcasts being dropped to make room for VT. (I had to ask around myself to find out that last bit of news.) The Post's sports department is getting harder and harder to defend. Everett W. A clue: This trio had a top 10 hit in 1971. Once again, One Good Woman was a top 20 hit in the KC area in 1972, where I hail from. However, this song did not hit the Hot 100. I'm waiting for your guesses. Ed Jones, Bel Air MD (6/15/07) Dave, Just want to mention many of us remember (and I may have copies filed away somewhere) when other groups of self appointed radio geniuses called the move to all sports in New York and Philadelphia, a dumb move. Then there were those who predicted this new station in Los Angeles, K-T-W-V, THE WAVE, was a waste of an FM frequency in such a rich revenue market (took a couple of years to pop and make the really big bucks). In fact one of the most respected program directors in the business today makes fun of himself for predicting in the late 1980's that AM Talk radio was DEAD! There are other examples but I don't suspect they would resonate with you. Looking at the success of Bonneville and those behind Washington Post Radio one suspects they are as dumb as those before them who took the risk and spent the money to create new formats and break away from copycat programming too many in our industry embrace. (6/15/07) I believe that in his very young years, Rick King was a weekend member of the WEAM Team. I hung around WMUC after he graduated, but people there who knew him would talk about his engineering genius. Roddy Freeman (6/15/07) Rick King is the consummate engineer and one of the most dedicated. It seems he's been at WMAL forever but he was the same as the chief engineer of WMUC at Maryland in it's carrier current days in the '60's. Simply the best. (and not a bad jock in his day.) Best wishes! Bob Duckman (6/15/07) "I'm one bitching about WMAL going off the air at night. Unfortunately I can't pick up any other AM station that has George's show or else I would shut up and change the dial." Try CKLW 800AM out of Windsor, Ontario WGY 810 from Albany, NY or WRVA 1140 from Richmond. They all come in great in NoVA. Stay@Home Dad (6/15/07) Dave's response: I usually find best non-DC reception of George Noory to be found on Cleveland's 1100, Charlotte's 1110, or Philadelphia's 1210..... (Regarding the Terps on JFK:) It made our paper today, on C2. (6/15/07) Dave's response: The Post? The C2 page in my copy of today's rag has "Ask Amy," an article on mens' pants, and thing on performance art from Venice. Even a search of "WJFK" on the Post's website fails to find anything on yesterday's radio deal..... I wanted to send you an FYI that I think FTVLive is a little late on WUSA joining other Gannett stations that use so-called backpack journalists. I'm pretty sure the station already had a one-man-band in use... From what I've heard.. this has been a HUGE issue boiling among the reporter/photog ranking union members... (6/15/07) Dave's response: Anyone know more? (Dave's response: Hey, I slam everybody) Thats kinda the point...you may slam"everyone", but in the past few months you "slam" Bonneville a disproportionate amount...and there doesn't seem to be a good reason. you reference Clear Channel and CBS. Think about those groups...the have 8 and 5 stations respectively. Bonneville has 2 that you talk about (constantly), 3 in total (WFED seems to be spared your wrath). You may think that WGMS was a mistake, but other would disagree...it has been argued that it was an unfortunate casulty of Bonneville's decision to position WTOP on the FM dial...arguably a smart move that you would only see from a private company...and from a company that must have thought that the very little money WGMS made paled in comparison to the monster cash flow that WTOP produces. All that notwithstanding, there have been many other dumb moves in DC radio...but yet those companies don't seem to be receiving the attention you give to Bonneville. For someone so concerned about getting attribution for "breaking news stories", you are losing credibility with your subjectivity. Maybe that is why the Post doesn't give you attribution. Maybe not. (6/15/07) Dave's response: Ah, what a good idea! I should "ration" my criticism in accordance with the number of local stations a company owns. So, I guess I should slam Clear Channel (which owns eight DC stations) about twice as much as ABC/Citadel (which owns three). Hmmm. As for me being objective? Never. DCRTV is my site and it will always be full of my opinion - and yours..... (Last I checked there's not one frequency in the market that reaches 1 million cume, much less "millions") You are correct that nobody reaches millions, but in the Spring and Fall when the TSA Cume is calculated, WTOP consistently has a CUME of 1 Million. A few times their CUME has been close to 1.2 Million. Kane and others are just using a little theater of the mind with the audience...this is radio after all...and it works really well. You don't think that Jack Diamond only has 13 arbitron rated listeners (or whatever # he says)? JC (6/15/07) What's up with Albie Dee? Is he going to fill in on every station in the market? I heard him doing nights on The Globe! The usually full of life Albie sounded like someone let the air out of his balloon. Deflated and stale trying to do his "act" while introducing terrible music. Someone needs to blow up The Globe. They are terrible. As for Albie, someone please find this guy a job. He's stretching even for his talents. Bebe (6/15/07) Saw a post from Uncle Johnny, wow! Where are you playing radio now? Last I heard it was Miss108. Still remember the live broadcast from Merriweather on Q-107, those were the days. (6/15/07) dave, much has been written in the mailbag about your hyper focus on Bonneville...but I have to say that your rant today kind of swings me towards agreeing with them. What did Bonneville and the Post do to you? The print version of the Post has run many stories about Red Zebra over the last year...both good and bad. RZ would be deemed a competitor to WTWP. WMAL gets its fair share of reliable source coverage. WMAL is certainly a competitor to WTWP. And just last week the Post printed an article about WTWP that I am sure nobody over at Idaho ave was happy about. It is becoming obvious that you have some "beef" with Bonneville. (6/15/07) Dave's response: Hey, I slam everybody - Clear Channel, CBS, ABC, Red Zebra. And Bonneville. I have often praised WTOP's Jim Farley and even made him our "Person Of The Year" one year. But Bonneville's recent moves to blow up classical WGMS, a top-rated station, and to get "in bed" with the Washington Post are among the dumbest radio moves ever seen in the DC radio market. In my humble opinion, anyway..... I cannot believe you mentioned Dr. Gene Scott! That show was riveting TV in the pre-cable days. His legacy still lives www.drgenescott.org ...If you never saw this guy click here:
www.youtube.com (6/15/07)Dave's response: I believe I met and got yelled at by the infamous Gene Scott. In the late 1970s, during my summer breaks from James Madison University, I worked at the Reston Sheraton, mainly driving the shuttle van to and from Dulles Airport. I met many famous people doing this, including the second man on the moon, Buzz Aldrin. Well, one morning, one of the front desk people asked me to go up to a room to check on a guest who was not answering his "wake up" call. After banging on the door, it was opened by a man looking a lot like Gene Scott. I don't remember exactly what he said, but it wasn't very pleasant. I was later told that he was in town for a religious conference and to talk with the folks who owned Channel 66, which then featured religious programming 24/7..... WMAL should have never gotten the rights to Coast to Coast when they KNEW they would be off the air doing engineering. They should have waited for the upgrade to be completed then introduced the upgrade by carrying Coast to Coast. In the mean time they should have programmed reruns of Rush or other day time programming. (6/15/07) Well the "MySpace" clone, that Booger`s buddies push so hard, just reached 10,000 people! It will be a million before long. Juuuust kidding. I don`t even listen to that douchebag, but he consistently keeps pissing people off, from what I read online. What a great skill to have. Things must be going great at the TLC Laser Eye Center studios (don`t ask me, but thats what station`s id sounds like these days). Jeff, it is time to go, there are other stations around the country that need to be ran to the ground. Your job in DC s done. Oh and for God`s sakes, please take your overweight entourage with you, we want Mark, Kris, Ron, KT, Albie and Julian back. (6/15/07) Accessing a free broadcast of the Maryland Terrapins season opener against Villanova on September 1 could be exceeding difficult for many fans. The "television" feed will be on ESPN360, an Internet outlet that's inaccessible to most area residents. As for radio, WHFS-FM/105.7 will likely have to pre-empt in Baltimore due to an Orioles' conflict, leaving the Terps to weak sister station WJFK/1300. Of course, the new Washington, D.C. area affiliate WJFK-FM/106.7 has its own well-documented propagation problems in the Free State. We could get into MASN/Triple X debut levels of ugliness on this one. Everett W. (6/15/07) RE: [ " Other taped events had been previously broadcast " ]... Let me re-phrase that (no "tape recording" existed obviously)..... Other presidential events had been broadcast previously before that date. (6/15/07) Rick King leaving WMAL. Wow! I worked with Rick in the 1980's when I was doing nights on Q107. Rick was a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with. Best of luck to you, Rick! Uncle Johnny (6/15/07) I drive in from the Winchester, VA area and have really grown to love the Bob & Tom Show. It would smoke the Junkies and Eliot in the AM drive if some intelligent broadcaster would put it on in the DC market. I lose the signal just west of Leesburg and usually switch to either WTOP for traffic or WJFK for the Junkies, but I would keep Bob & Tom all the way to Reston if I could. Any good reason why one of the most popular AM drive shows in the country can’t find a home locally? There is almost nothing worth listening to besides traffic and weather on the ‘8s’. (6/15/07) Yes, Kane does fake just about everything on his show. He makes up stories all the time because he leads a very boring life. He is a good little follower of Booger though so he's kissing the right ass at 1801. My favorite is when he tells the listeners that "they" (the actor that Hot pays for the bit) is on-air to "millions of listeners". Last I checked there's not one frequency in the market that reaches 1 million cume, much less "millions". It does fit his style of lying and faking bits though so what can you expect? And I do agree with you Dave, the DC101 weekend DJ's are a joke! But what can you expect for $5 an hour? You figure that they'll pay these actors who sound like great "listeners" for Kane's show, why not throw them a couple of more bucks and have them host the weekends? (6/15/07) Hello, all -

Unfortunately I can't pick up any other AM station that has George's show or else I would shut up and change the dial. If they want to do work when no one's listening, pick the weekend after Ric Edelman's show. The afternoon/evening tripe is horrendous. I'd bet there are a lot more people listening to George talk about UFO's than listening to the booooooooooooooooring money/computer/infomercials. Not a sermon, just a thought. (6/15/07) The fact that the Terps are moving to WJFK in DC should be FAR from a shocker. A group called "Terrapin Sports Marketing" is the exclusive sponsorship sales partner and multimedia rights holder of Maryland Athletics. They delivered the Baltimore rights right into CBS Radio Baltimore's laps a few years ago and are doing the same now in DC. Who owns Terrapin Sports Marketing???? --- you got it, CBS. umterps.cstv.com (6/15/07) Since you folks brought up Kane. Where to start ? First of all, I feel bad for the hispanic girl who used to work with Mark and Kris. Not sure what the appropriate comparison would be here, but it just has to suck. To be putting up with a self-absorbed, chauvinistic pig and the "damn we don`t have anyone, but it used to be 4 people on the show, so now we need people to fill the empty spots, but somehow pay them nothing" sidekicks. The girl, actually, is an ay-okay, but this is a major market morning show we are talking about here. Where did this chick come from? I know they needed to find somebody quick, but come on? Back to Kane, overly cocky, not at all entertaining, unoriginal, really really boring and most of all, he is REALLY trying. His best, whatever that is, but lets see here. I wake up at 5am for several years now. I am on the road at 5:30 and used to always flip between WTOP and Mark & Kris. I never was a die-hard fan of 99.5 and their "let us play Justin Timberlake 38 times a day" playlist, but that Mark, Kris, news guy and Teapot had the kind of chemistry, that could be clearly heard. Yeah, they had days, when Mark was a complete dick to everyone and Kris would not quit with her smart remarks, but it was ENTERTAINMENT. On the contrary, we now have a "Is it 10AM yet?" morning show, where the main objective is to try and bullshit enough to stretch it for four and a half hours and THANK GOD for Justin Timberlake and his music, because now they can play a lot more of it during the morning show. Since they have NOTHING to talk about and what the hell is the deal with this Jerry Springer rip off, where he reveals to a crying girl on the radio, that her boyfriend is gay and is cheating on her with entire DC and Baltimore population. Why do I want to hear this? It is bad enough I am stuck on 270 and my workday didn`t even start. Also, don`t little boys and girls listen to this? They are a "myspace" generation already, they don`t need their fragile minds fucked even more. This can go on and on. Whoever made the decision to restructure this 99.5 station should be ashamed of him/herself. The morning show is terrible, whatever that thing is that yaps after the morning show until 3PM is just as bad, that Tony guy does okay and then of course there is the "Freek" show, which is a repeat of the same bullshit we heard in the morning. Just not as bad and the timing is more appropriate. Sad, sad thing. I wonder how long all of them will actually last? I don`t know anyone in the right mind who would like this kind of radio. P.S. Paris Hilton is in jail. How come Kane is not trying to bail her out? a) She is a woman b) Hot 99.5 spent all the money they had on TV commercials c) a and b. (6/15/07) RE: [ " On this date in 1922, Warren G. Harding became the first president heard on radio, as Baltimore station WEAR broadcast his speech dedicating the Francis Scott Key memorial at Fort McHenry. " ].............. Not quite... that was not the 1st time a U.S. President was heard on the radio. Other taped events had been previously broadcast, but it does have a claim to fame as it is widely considered to be the 1st time a President did a live remote broadcast via radio. Additionally, the broadcast was achieved by stringing wire all the way around Baltimore's Inner Harbor from Fort McHenry to the radio station's transmitter on the banks of the harbor. That station shortly afterward became WFBR AM 1300 and was Baltimore's first radio station (experimentally, not licensed). It was also the Orioles radio broadcast station the last time the team won the World Series in 1983 (Remember "Orioles Magic" anyone? That was the extremely successful WFBR promo campaign). And sadly, that station is now named after a Washington DC station (or a U.S. President, take your pick) as WJFK 1300 and, ummm, IT SUCKS!...... BRING BACK W F B R CBS SCHMUCKS! (6/15/07) Actually, WMAL has been going off the air at night as a sort of 'flashing the lights' tribute to the very soon to retire (like, today) Rick King, who has been THE engineer and historian of the station for more years than I have been in radio. As a grand finale, Rick has been there every day, evening and overnight of the past three years, shepherding along the 10kW daytime upgrade and addition of IBOC (aka HD Radio) capabilities. Rick has steadfastly reviewed each and every morsel of information, each and every detail of the details related to this process and his dedication to delivering perfection in reception has been held in high regard. While the deadline for this project is the end of this month, with Rick leaving now, a full court press was put forth to make sure that we finished this with him, rather than without. I am pleased to have been able to work with Rick, (and you too Dave Sproul), Tom Shedlick and the rest of the WMAL staff and vendors over the past three years on this project. We appreciate the cooperative efforts and patience of WMAL programming and management in accomodating the unfortunate necessity of signal interruption. The antenna system work supervised by Cavell and Jones, with components by Kintronics and electronics by Harris, was tested at full power one night recently, with IBOC carriers on,,,and it passed with beautiful symmetry. So instead of complaining, please realize that all of this was worth it, a tremendous expense and effort, to deliver a better signal to the listener. We just got it done a little sooner so Rick could pass the baton with the satisfaction that the WMAL transmitter plant, which he babied with parental zeal, has evolved into the new digital age under his care.
