So let me get this straight... after all this flipping and flopping, Wapo Radio is now on the exact same frequencies that used to make up the WTOP Radio Network about three years ago, right? And WTOP is now on the old WGMS frequency and one of the old Z-104 frequencies? With the other Z-104 frequency broadcasting salsa gospel or something like that? Seems like they could have saved a lot of time, trouble and printing of new letterhead/business cards if they'd just done it all this way in the first place.... (5/18/07)

With CBS Radio dumping thier San Fran Free Fm'er for Classic hits. How about WQSR moving back to 105.7 as a 60's and 70's oldies station again? Move Diane Lyn and Steve Rouse to mornings there. Even a 3.0 to 3.5 rating would be better that HFS's 1.7 or so. Baltimore radio stinks without having an Oldies Outlet, even 2 years after 102.7 flipped to Jack. CBS then could move the talk format back to 1300 AM since WJFK-AM seems to get no ratings at all as ESPN radio. (5/18/07)

Dave's response: Hmmm. 105.7 back to WQSR with real oldies and the Orioles, 102.7 back to WXYV as contemporary hit V103, and 1300 back to WFBR as talk with Kirk and Mark and Don and Mike. Yeah.....

A FCC call letter query says “WTOZ” is taken by the US Coast Guard…---It should not be taken by the Coast Guard. Coast Guard land stations, when they use call signs, use ones starting with "N", as does the Navy--GAB in the Airless Cubicle (a silver side Coastie) (5/18/07)

Wow! Comedian/Actor Louis CK (appearing at the DC Improv next week) has some provocative thoughts on the O&A suspension and the recent rash of radio censorship. It is a must read for those of you that agree that censorship is unacceptable. fullblownaids.com... Stu, Fairfax (5/18/07)

Out of genuine curiosity, I'd like to know what all these people who are canceling their subscriptions to XM over the whole O&A thing plan on doing with their XM receivers now. Can they be used for Sirius? Can they be used for anything other than picking up XM or do these ex-subscribers of XM essentially own a useless piece of hardware now? Enquiring minds want to know... (5/18/07)

Dave's response: No, an XM receiver can't be used for Sirius. Basically, a deactivated XM radio is a $100 doorstop.....

Dear all - We're doing another two-fer on Tuesday, May 22. Our main event is "Today" show travel correspondent Peter Greenberg, but today we added to Tuesday's show the alleged "DC Madam," Deborah Jeane Palfrey and her lawyer, Montgomery Blair Sibley. Montgomery will do most of the talking, but we'll get to meet miss Palfrey and learn a little about what's going on in her life these days. As always, the doors open at noon, the program begins promptly at 12:30, the fee is $35 all inclusive of food, beverages, tax and tip, and for reservations please call Jon Moss at 202.338.2000 during weekday business hours or email him at nathansgtn@aol.com. All are welcome. We hope to see you there. Bring a friend. Have a good weekend, Carol Joynt (5/18/07)

WTOZ....Tooz radio. Take that you Baltomorons. The Tooz (5/18/07)

Today is Brooks Robinson’s 70th birthday. The Baltimore Sun has posted a string of posts that only begin to show the continued love and respect that so many retain for this man. We who grew up with Brooks saw a team that achieved excellence year after year. Today, the Orioles continue their struggles and maybe one day they will get to winning pennants again. Even though it doesn’t seem to be a big thing…a nice start (at least psychologically) would be to put the name ‘BALTIMORE’ back on the road uniforms. Then during the home games, the team should trot out the old songs, like ‘Go Orioles Go’ from the ’66 season and those great 70’s ditties as well. Between innings…the scoreboard can show vignettes of this day in Orioles history…like beating the Yanks with 7 runs in the 8th inning in 1964, back to back home run walk off wins over the A’s in ’71, or some similar highlight. Or, broadcast a great play-by-play clip of Orioles glory between innings as well. Get another Linda Warehime type to sweep the bases again. Bring old Orioles in as guest color announcers or have them throw out the first ball. Then, build on to it from there. Maybe the marketing department can package some audio of the great games in O’s history and sell ‘em in the concession areas. Bring back some of the old branding fonts and logos from the 60’s and 70’s, too. The Orioles (IMHO) need to drench that ballpark in nostalgia at every turn…and who knows, that old Oriole mystique and greatness that a Brooks Robinson personifies today as back then…may begin to return. Yes indeedy, it might just fire up this ballclub. This team holds a ton of wonderful memories for so many people. Sure would be nice to see it happen again. What do you think, Mr. Angelos? – Bob Mathers (5/18/07)

Dave you were right - I cleared my cache in Firefox and now I can get to the mailbag. It is strange though that this problem developed on a bunch of different people’s computers all of a sudden. And as the poster said, I was not suggesting that you would put any malware on your site; I was saying that I feel Firefox is safer than IE. So, do the Amazon referrer link ads bring in much money? (5/18/07)

Dave's response: "Much"? Even though our traffic is way up this year, revenue from both the amazon.com and Google ad streams is down a bit from where it was during the holiday period (October through January) at the end of 2006. But, I guess, that's to be expected. So, I'm selling DCRTV ad space myself to local advertisers, which more than makes up for the difference. Interested in buying an ad on DCRTV? Click here.....

A FCC call letter query says “WTOZ” is taken by the US Coast Guard… (5/18/07)

Dave, I got the same page for mailbag and mailbag1 for a while yesterday, both with the ads, neither with content. Maybe chalk it up to something wrong in the stratosphere because I was using IE and did a manual refresh on both pages. (5/18/07)

"Tony Kornheiser" & "Rehoboth Beach" ???...... I've got a few jokes here, but they'd all be censored, damn it. :-( (5/18/07)

"Dave's response: If everyone who hated WJFK-FM's personalities stopped listening to WJFK, the damn station would have even fewer listeners. Think about it.....". Good point Dave, and I'll bet if the JFK on-air personalities who claim to hate dcrtv.com actually stopped reading the mailbag, you'd have about six less lurkers/anonymous posters. Nino Greasemanelli in Potomac. (5/18/07)

Dave's response: Yeah, a good number of shock jock talk and political talk radio listeners hate the guts of the various radio personalities they listen to. But that's a "good" thing. They listen! Listeners can be very passionate about radio personalities they absolutely deplore. I think Rush Limbaugh is an tremendous ass, but I have to tune in every weekday at noon to hear what he's going to say. Oh, the above e-mail was not from the legendary Senior Tracht.....

Thank you for your CN8, The Comcast Network item. I noticed some incorrect information in your post, and have provided the below clarification. Is it possible for you to update the post with the appropriate details? - CN8, The Comcast Network is not based in Wilmington, De. The network's headquarters are in Moorestown, N.J., with studios in the Baltimore, Boston, Delaware, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. areas. In addition, we don't consider CN8 to be a "news and public affairs network." CN8, The Comcast Network provides multi-genre programming that is national in scope and local in impact, covering the worlds of news, issues, politics, sports, entertainment, personal finance and more. (5/18/07)

I have been using Firefox for a very long time and have had no issues with DCRTV's site being not firefeox friendly. As a matter of fact, I find firefox to be faster than the bloated IE and the tabbed browsing makes visiting those Russian sites almost like a multi-media experience (just kidding). Mark in Annandale (5/18/07)

Dave's response: The problem is that some internet providers (a la AOL) "cache" versions of DCRTV's pages (and other sites) on their own servers. This is done to improve speed and "reliability." But it also means you're getting an older version of a page. A DCRTV Mailbag update uploaded at 9 AM may not be available to you until 3 PM or later. This can also be caused by your own computer system not checking for updated pages every time you fire up your browser. Go into your browser's internet setup menu and make sure the box for "update pages on every visit" (or whatever it's called) is checked. DCRTV updates its Front and Mailbag pages many times every day. You could very well be getting outdated "dead" pages instead of fresh stuff - and not even realize it.....

Tony Kornheiser spend time this morning bitching about the technical difficulties of doing his show from Rehoboth Beach, where he's spending a golfing weekend. Why doesn't he just "pull a Geronimo" and storm out of the studio! (5/18/07)

Dave, I speak jive, so let me translate: Darren was saying (re: Trojans and viruses) that he wants to continue to use Firefox as his browser because it keeps him free from those nasties, so he sez to be sure to make the mailbag firefox friendly. (He feels that other browser is much more vulnerable, and I agree!). (5/18/07)

Dave's response: I hate Bill Gates almost as much as I hate Rupert Murdoch. Imagine producing and selling an operating system with virus protection not included! No, you have to pay extra (and pay and pay again) to get that. How stupid is that? Sheesh.....

Brilliant idea Dave! Adding 950 to 1520 would shoot WTRI right down the Potomac into the city. On good summer days you can actually hear 1520 in Montgomery Co., NW DC and down to National Airport, but adding even that lightbulb of a stick at night would be great for what Buddy is trying to do up there. A little FCC snooping over morning coffee finds WCTN only have one other station under the "Win Broadcasting" and that a Dr. Yoon in Forest Hills, NY and his lawyer down here run the place. With all the kareoke bars in Korea, you'd think Dr. Yoon would prefer Sinatra over the extended version of "The Sounds of Silence"! LOL (5/18/07)

Dave's response: Buddy Rizer's Vegas Radio is a magnificent nostalgic music station. But it's based out in Frederick County. It needs to get coverage inside the Beltway. A relay on 950 would help do that.....

(excerpt) Do you not have a life and want to sit around listening to a station that you hate to see what they are doing so that you would have something to bitch about ... in reality you can't even get a board op job in radio. (end) Ha ha ha! That's great!! Hey kids, see what drinking four Red Bulls in one sitting does to you? Oh, and as far as broadcast jobs go, I'll stack my resume and pro creds against yours anytime and anyplace, Marconi. (5/18/07)

Mea culpa.. and I’m flogging myself, rending garments etc. Diane Rehm originates at WAMU. Tom Gauger, el stupido. (5/18/07)

Do you not have a life and want to sit around listening to a station that you hate to see what they are doing so that you would have something to bitch about. Wow, mailbaggers are like school bullies here, picking on the little guys to make them look all big and mighty, but in reality-you can't even get a board op job in radio. Sigh. (5/18/07)

Dave's response: My idea - "WTRI, Vegas Radio, 1520 and 950".....

For you other posters re: the Junkies, if you don’t like them…don’t listen. (5/18/07)

Dave's response: If everyone who hated WJFK-FM's personalities stopped listening to WJFK, the damn station would have even fewer listeners. Think about it.....

Anyone know why Bonneville applied for a WTWP 1500 "Direct Measurement" permit from the FCC? Does this mean they're unsure their signal is transmitting properly or does that mean there's been a complaint of interference of some kind? (5/18/07)

Dave's response: Wouldn't surprise me if someone on 1480 (Dumfries), 1490 (Hagerstown), or 1520 (Brunswick) complained about that horrid digital buzz from 1500.....

Why are TV manufacturers even building NEW analog sets? I can see hanging onto the old ones until they die, but there's no point in buying a new one. Then again, twenty years ago, I thought the turntable would be dead by now. VPI currently makes a 10k turntable. So, what do I know? JOHN IN STAFFORD (5/18/07)

RE: [ " I'm such a computer idiot, I wouldn't know how to even do that. " ]......... Ummm, no offense Dave, but spreading a virus not only requires one smart person to create it, but it relies on lots of "computer idiots" to spread it without even knowing. By the way, I know you're not spreading a virus as I'm not having any problems with Firefox, but then again, I clear my cache files daily and am smart enough to not have viruses. :-) (5/18/07)

I felt I had to comment regarding the attacks on Diane Rehm and David Gregory. First things first, her condition was diagnosed 10 years ago. While it might not be pleasant sounding she is incredibly insightful andf has interviewed many more important people than the trolls who police this board, looking for their names to be printed. Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, also suffers fromt he same condition. Unlike Rehm for three years he could not speak AT ALL and could only speak after sneezing. To chastize her for overcoming her disability is typical behavior for those who can't do the same. As for David Gregory.he has been a White House correspondent, logged time as a guest host for Imus and guest anchored on Good Monring America. So Rehm went from being local to nationally syndicated and broadcasts out of WAMU and Gregory was a White House correspondent for years and these are losers? To quote Rehm, "Tell me what you do?" I bet this is as much exposure as you folks have gotten. Adam (5/18/07)

Any word on when the mailbag will be back? (5/18/07)

Dave's response: We just changed the address of the page. (And we will again!) Please ditch AOHell! They "cache" DCRTV pages for faster loading on their own servers. This means that, even when we don't change the "location" of the Mailbag page, you're frequently (!) not receiving the latest version of the Mailbag. And you don't even realize it.....

Dave's response: How about an "All Psychedelic Furs" format for 950? "I'm into you like a train....."

In just one week, analog only TV's on sale in stores are to start carrying "warning labels" about the 2009 Digital switchover. Let's see who is compliant and who isn't. Hey, it gives us a good reason to "window-shop" at sets that are likely to be over-priced (the dual standard) and the about to have converter-added analog sets! Which reminds me: I have two sets which will be unsuable after the switch (5/17/07)

I turned on WTNT this afternoon at 6:06pm waiting eagerly for Michael Savage rant and rave about today's amensty bill passed by Congress to grant residency to illegal immigrant lawbreakers. What did I hear? Dead silence. I checked every 15 minutes and still silence. I gave up at 8PM when it was still silent. Please TNT, I need my Savage, the most sane voice on radio!!! (5/17/07)

Dave's response: See below.....

Anyone know what disaster befell both the Denis Miller show, and WTNT this evening? At around 5:20, Miller began an interview with Josh Gerstein of the New York Sun. At the end of Gerstein's second answer, silence ensued....not a word from Miller, clearly surprising Gerstein who said "Hello?" (suggesting the initial problem was with the Denis Miller Show, not WTNT itself). After that, WTNT faded to music which lasted at least 5 minutes. I was then away from the radio for 30 minutes, but by the time 6pm came around, WTNT was in total silence. No news and no Savage. Not a great moment for a station already reeling from losing Imus. (5/17/07)

Dave's response: Well, Miller's show is tape delayed on WTNT from late morning. It's not live.....

What format does 950 AM air? Is it Oldies or brokered programs? (5/17/07)

From the front page: "Bill Thompson leaves Bonneville's all-news WTOP to join ABC's news talk WMAL." Isn't that kind of like leaving the rescue ship to climb back onto the Titanic? Is he out of his mind? (5/17/07)

RE: O&A Fallout: XM "Flooded" With Cancel Calls. I just got off the phone with XM CSR’s after nearly a 2 hour wait to cancel my 4 subs. While they did claim to process my cancellation request, it will only be effective after the quarter that I already paid for in advance despite my request for immediate termination and a refund. As such, it will only hit the bottom line after the investors meeting in June. Honestly, I have never been treated so poorly as a consumer. Stu, Fairfax (5/17/07)

Today is Day 4 of silence at 950 AM. Anyone know what's taken them from the air? (5/17/07)

To John in Stafford - While i agree that Crybaby Howie will have to be pacified at some point, it would only be necessary if the merger went through. I do not think this action was made to that end. The merger is very far from a done deal, and has a great deal of resistance to overcome. I still do not think it will ever get through. It will go the way of the USAir/United merger. At this point, it doesn't matter if Crybaby Howie doesn't want the competition and ol' Mel will bow and scrape to his every whim and petulant fancy. I believe it is really too early in the process. If they don't placate the govt, placating Crybaby will be a moot point. I don't know why anyone listens to him anymore either. Even when he was still on terrestrial radio, his constant whining about how awful his life was became beyond tiresome. The final straw for me was when he shut down his boards b/c people were calling his girlfriend a butta face (which, BTW, she absolutely is). That was pathetic AND hypocritical. I am no fan of O&A - I HATED them the first time they were on JFK. I only liked Jimmy Norton. while i have warmed to them a bit, the only reason i first signed up for XM was for R&F. I would prefer all R&F, all the time. That said, i still think that XM's actions are only to placate the Feds, and reprehensible. They would not have done anything if the exact same comments had not been made about Rice or Laura Bush. If they had been made about no name women, or even stupid famous women such has Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan. XM freaked b/c they were made about powerful women within the current administration. That is what garnered the publicity, and therefore the potential attention of the Feds making decisions about the merger. They make horrible comments about women ALL THE TIME! More egregious material had been broadcast on satellite by them ( and Crybaby) than this. I hope people do file a class action suit, based on fraudulent inducement, or some such thing. It would serve XM right. Certainly class actions have been based, and won, on less. Chris(tin) from G'town - lest anyone think i am a biased male (5/17/07)

"To the dummy that yammered .... Have you ever heard of a contract? The Junks, as average as they are, have a 'morning contract' they cant just be moved around willy-nilly". Lemme yammer a little more - the Junks do have a Super Agent in Bob Eatman (?) - he got the dopes @ CBS to sign the Junks to a "morning contract" **without** the words "good" or "listenable" between "morning" and "contract". Hey isn't "willy-nilly" one of the Junks? - or am I thinking of the disposable Junkie "Papa Lurch". But it's of no matter now that Ron and Fez are 7x24 during the GnA hiatus - maybe I'll yammer over to JFK - DC's high school theatre arts station - when Ron and Fez return to a normal schedule. dapjdjyammeringindava (5/17/07)

"The G&A Pesticles are cracking me up..." Really? Well, with that little childish, name-calling rant, we have been furnished with absolute proof that the posters of all of the clever nicknames for O&A, the rehashing of the same old lines, and the manipulation of the "facts" are in fact coming from one person. Whether you are an employee of Sirius, an ex-XM employee or someone who has nothing better to do than to throw the same pile of stuff on the board, it doesn't matter. Your bowing down to Howard has gone unnoticed. O&A could care less who you are, either. I'm sure we'll hear from you up here about oh, three or four hours from now, as it's going to take you that long to analyze everything I've written, bring back up all your "facts" and launch into a name-calling counterattack. Enjoy yourself. (5/17/07)

Dave, Great rant about all the WT...call letters. On small correction: I do not think that Washington Post Radio will be adding any MORE frequencies, I mean considering that the frequencies they are on used to get a 5-something and now they get a .6. Hard to imagine adding more power to a product the public isn't buying would help! Ok, ok, if they buy ENOUGH signals maybe they could someday get a .8, but only if Kornheiser is repeated a SECOND time and the Nats keep winning. Radio Fan (5/17/07)

Peter Rosenberg has a Sunday shift on Hot 97? More power to him, he seems to love the music and there aren't too many shootings in the lobby. However, last time I checked, a Sunday night gig was not a full time - life sustaining shift, even in NYC. ESPECIALLY in NYC where the cost of living makes DC seem like Wyoming. (5/17/07)

The Mailbag link does not work from the front page with Firefox but it does work with Internet Explorer. Can you fix it so that it works with Firefox? I really don’t like having drive-by downloads, keylogging software and other viruses and Trojan horses on my computer. Thanks. Darren (5/17/07)

Dave's response: Huh? Clear your browser's cache. And, let me state, any "drive-by downloads, keylogging software and other viruses and Trojan horses" you might have on your computer didn't come from DCRTV. I'm such a computer idiot, I wouldn't know how to even do that. You might want to stop visiting those Russian porn sites.....

RE: " The G&A Pesticles are cracking me up - we're suppose to be impressed..." Another gutless Stern pussy that won't post his name. That's OK, we'll just thank all of the gutless pussies that listen to Stern when all of radio turns into nothing but edgier than a Golden Girls re-runs marathon on Lifetime. But anyway, nevermind all that now. We'll have plenty of time for that later. Hey shitdick, those 40,000 former subscribers to XM is just over the past couple of days. Those numbers are still growing, dumbass! As we speak, XM "customer care" representatives are STILL fielding calls from legions of angry people out there and not only that, sponsers are starting to support the cause as well and all while you have your head buried so far up Hoo-Hoo's ass that you can't see what's coming for him. This has absolutely nothing to do with what he thinks he can say or not say. This is all about what the special interest groups want him to say. They are calling the shots now and Howie or anyone else in radio won't know where the lines are drawn until he's already crossed them. That's the way it is now so laugh it up, moron. He's next, I guarantee it. And BTW, it wasn't Patrice O'Neal doing an impression of a homeless guy, jackass. The video's online, watch it for yourself. Kevin in HdG, MD (5/17/07)

"Pete Rosenberg is a champion at life." Without question, that could actually be the greatest sentence ever formulated. To whichever member of the Rosenberg family that took time out of their day to write that...thank you. Sincerely, some "punk ass jobber". (5/17/07)

Don Geronimo's voice sounds increasingly froggy lately. I wonder if his stomach acid is doing the reflux thing and irritating his vocal chords? I believe the technical term is "vomit voice." Perhaps he should seek medical treatment. - Dr. Clive (Hi Mike!) Butterford (5/17/07)

The G&A Pesticles are cracking me up - we're suppose to be impressed (or WOWed!) by the numbers being batted about of their hardcore fans who have instinctly cancelled their subscription because they think Ope and Ant are above their employers - up to 40,000 hairless small-brains up and dropped XM? We're suppose to be impressed by this? Wasn't it about 3 years ago that Gregg and Acne were on a tiered payed service and only 35,000 hard cores signed up then? You mean to tell us that in 3 years the boring duo attracted only 5,000 more hardcores? THAT is impressive? Please. XM is tired of them doing a dull, already water-down show. If they had any real heat to them, do you think they would have shared them with another radio company? Now that THAT isn't working out so good, they are left with boring guys playing tapes of television shows, and eating yogurt. THAT is suppose to be edgy? No..of course not...Patrice O'Neal pretending to be a homeless guy that talks about raping Coni Rice and Laura Bush, while they cackle and bray...THAT is the edgy stuff...of course, the two liars and their skateboarding fan base won't even be honest with that (check out front page of wackbag.com). Pathetic and tired...O&A ALWAYS WHINE IN THE END! (5/17/07)

XM LOSES AD REVENUE WITH SUSPENSION OF OPIE & ANTHONY - As of May 15 at 3:30pm EST, we pulled our advertising spots from XM Radio. We pulled our spots from both Radio Disney (Channel 115) and The Virus (Channel 202). We have done this in response to XM Radio's censoring of the Opie and Anthony Show by suspending them for 30 days. It is apparent that XM Radio is beholden to crybaby special interest groups who cannot separate humor from reality. It is also unfortunate that XM Radio executives don't have the guts to stand up for their on air talent. I have contacted other XM Radio advertisers and have asked them to pull their adverting spots. It appears that many of them already are. Please be advised that spots cannot be pulled overnight. Some are already in the "hopper" and may air for the remainder of the week. Some other sponsors are doing the right thing and are pulling their spots. *Please* give them time to finish the cycle this week before you actively boycott their products. Thanks for your time. www.peopleagainstcensorship.com (5/17/07)

thank you don geronimo for running patty rosenposer out of dc. rosie is a racist and exploits african americans. his dream job will turn into a nightmare and with any luck some real thugs (unlike the suburban sissys he ran w/ in maryland) will teach him some thuganomics when they here how phony he is and take insult to his " i speak for black people" bs. btw did you know he was jewish and like black people? beware nyc - get ready to hear that "mantra" over and over again. he was the laughing stock at wjfk and will be the laughing stock in nyc once the listeners discover how "whack" he is. btw - supersize my drink patty!!!! and congrats. grimis~mcdonalds (5/17/07)

WMAL? I always thought the call letters stood for "White, Male, Angry, Loner!" After all, those adjectives form the four cornerstones of their target audience, don't they? (5/17/07)

Dave, The link to the mailbag page isn't working, its goes to the ad page, and click on the mailbag link and it links back to itself... Rich (5/17/07)

Dave's response: Every now and then, we change the web page address of the Mailbag (and other "internal" DCRTV pages). Why? It's too complicated to explain. If you have trouble accessing the Mailbag via your direct link (a la a Favorite or Bookmark) just go to DCRTV's Front Page (www.dcrtv.com) and use the Mailbag link there. If you still have trouble, hit the Refresh or Reload button (if you can find it) on your browser.....

The eb email in question - "Just die....we're doing what's interesting to us. I have no tolerance for guys like you that criticize everything they hear. Go listen to Elliot or NPR or Donnie Simpson....i couldn't care less." I'm not sure that it's from eb, (he wrote, "couldn't care less" instead of his normal, "could care less") but it's from the Junks and his pathetic personality is all over it. This, an email to a listener who, although I don't email often and call even less, has positive things to say %80 of the time. Sounds like the negativity of a man that knows the end (of his career) is near. My email responce back was that, "I'll be at your next appearance tough guy, maybe we can talk about it." Of course, I won't be, and never have been to a junks appearance, I'm not eager to start now. I'm done with it all now, just thought I'd share. (5/17/07)

("Deep down, WMAL is a blight on the region's diverse culture. It's a rather sad little station with some very narrow minded people working there. KH") Thanks for the laugh! (5/17/07)

Hmmm I wonder why the losers in the mailbag are so angry that Peter Rosenberg landed a gig on his dream station (he talked about Hot 97 pretty regularly). It really is sad to see people so mad at someone who is busting his ass to make his dreams come true. You have to respect his effort and NYC is the right market for him. Watch out haters... (5/17/07)

Let me tell you something first of all - I see nothing but Rosenberg haters. I can see why you hate. Because you aren't Peter Rosenberg. Peter Rosenberg is an example of someone who has work ethic - Peter Rosenberg is someone who takes risks in life - Risks that will lead him to excellence. But all of you no class haters, who sit around all day, in your cubicles, making coffee for your bosses and kissing corporate ass, are nothing but a bunch of punk ass jobbers who work a 9 to 5 to put food in your fat wife's mouth, and come home to your snot nosed kids. Peter Rosenberg is a champion at life. Whether it be at JFK, McDonalds, or HOT 97, the #1 radio market, by the way - Good job Pete - Peter Rosenberg is BETTER than YOU. And WILL ALWAYS BE... WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! (5/17/07)

Diane Rehm noes not originate at WETA. She started at WAMU almost 35 years ago as a volunteer and still does her daily show there. Tom Gauger is right about the more important thing: she is a wonderful interviewer. Arguably it was poor programming, but I miss 'AMU's evening repeats of her late morning daily show. ArtC. (5/17/07)

Congratulations to Bill Thompson. I had the pleasure of working with Bill during his days at WBIG. He is a true professional!...Johnny Dark (WorldSpace Satellite Radio) (5/17/07)

"Rosenberg has been creating and posting humorous rap videos on YouTube as well as doing weekend night DJ work at an Adams Morgan McDonald's..." Seriously people....is that not the funniest shit you have ever read?!!! I mean...think about where you are in life...where you have been...if your resume includes the word McDonalds..in any other context other than being listed as a job when you were in high school...you are a total fucking loser....That's a perfect description of Petey R....Looks like NYC will now grow to despise Petey R like the rest of us...WB Centreville, VA (5/17/07)

Regarding the response noted Wednesday from the effeminate EB of the "Junkies": Strange how he would tell a listner to "just die." ... (5/17/07)

"Peter Rosenberg has landed a gig on HOT 97 in NYC for Sunday night! - one of the popular hip-hop stations in NYC. He even hinted that on his website and myspace page." Did that chubby, zero talent, bag of ass really need to go all the way to New York to become a night time janitor? So sad, so fat. (5/17/07)

Some observations: (1) 103.5 FM is officially WTOP-FM until Bonneville files to change the call to just WTOP, which they do not have to do; (2) WJFK has sounded different the past few days - a different audio processing chain is in use for some reason. That reason may be using the back-up transmitter co-located with ch.66 south of Fairfax, if Dave's reception problems are any indication; (3) WJLA-DT has dropped the second SD subchannel that had been carrying LocalPoint TV; (4) WNVT has transmitted 5 standard-def programs for a while now. Regards, Dave L. (5/17/07)

Did I detect a quiet sense of satisfaction among WMAL's morning team this morning when reporting that there are more white people and fewer black people in DC, according to the latest population statistics. Deep down, WMAL is a blight on the region's diverse culture. It's a rather sad little station with some very narrow minded people working there. KH (5/17/07)

I generally only hear an hour or so of the Junkies every day, while I’m in the car on the way to work – is it just me, or are they making a concerted effort to add MORE interviews in the 8:00 hour? Memo to the Junks: they’re not very good at interviews, particularly with the C-listers they’re getting. An ultimate fighting guy? Andrew Shue and Elizabeth Shue? Some race car driver? The interviews are dreadful. Let the boys shoot the breeze. Phoners with people who are selling projects just hold them down, and it’s VERY dull. Sincerely, TMU (5/17/07)

"Can WTOP ID 103.5 FM as "WTOP Washington" instead of "WTOP-FM Washington" now that 820 AM has different calls? Is any FCC paperwork needed if indeed this is possible?" - Yes! Bonneville must make a formal request to change calls to the FCC (which amounts to nothing more than filling out the right form these days). Since the own the calls, the process should take about one or two weeks. It ain't like it was in MY day. Have to run... Granville Klink, Gugliemo Marconi and I are going to test some of this HD crap! - "73's" Ben F. Waple (5/17/07)

Whats up with all the ads on the way to Mailbag? can't get to the mailbag from the front page....goes to ads/sponsor hell..... Is this something new? (5/17/07)

Dave's response: Yes, we're attempting to drive you insane. Just you!

BTW - the mailbag isn't working. (5/17/07)

Dave's response: See above.....

To those who find Diane Rehm’s voice a difficult listen: This woman is courageous beyond belief. When most of us would have left the profession, she continues with one of the sharpest minds on radio. Keep listening, you will get used to her speech patterns and focus instead on the insightful questions she throws at her guests. The program is syndicated by NPR from WETA and I believe it does very well with audiences. I just wish it was carried by West Virginia Public Radio. Incidentally, there is a guy on WV Public Radio with a similar voice problem. Frank Stowers has been on the WV airwaves for many years and is loved by most. Like Diane Rehm, he does get some adverse comment. Tom Gauger. (5/17/07)

Congtrats to Peter Rosenberg. I hope his ratings are better than Don & Mike's ratings. I hope his ratings are better than anything on WJFK, regardless that his new show is in New York. He can throw it back in their faces after the shabby treatment he got on WJFK. JOHN IN STAFFORD (5/17/07)

This is un-real! Over 20-38 Thousand (I'm not for sure the exact number) people have cancelled their subscriptions to XM Radio because of Opie & Anthony getting suspended. XM is trying to offer people 30 days for free and/or credit them, etc. and people are saying "NO" and are explaining to them about O&A and thats the only reason that they listen to XM which is the only reason I got it to begin with as well. Once back on the air, they are going to get their radios back on. Because of the overwelming response, I'm hearing rumors that XM might lift the 30 day suspension to earliar. Who knows? Remember OPIE & ANTHONY ALWAYS WIN IN THE END!!! (5/17/07)

Peter Rosenberg has landed a gig on HOT 97 in NYC for Sunday night! - one of the popular hip-hop stations in NYC. He even hinted that on his website and myspace page... LOL Don Geronimo is going to be pissed. (5/17/07)

Can WTOP ID 103.5 FM as "WTOP Washington" instead of "WTOP-FM Washington" now that 820 AM has different calls? Is any FCC paperwork needed if indeed this is possible? (5/17/07)

Hi "Ghost": Yes the tune I was referring to is called "Down To The River" though the refrain of "Take Me Down To The River To River To Where I Can Be Free" would lead one to think otherwise. The song was catchy and in 1970 WEEL was pushing a personal appearance by the performers of the song (The Damnation Of Adam Blessing) at the now defunct "Rag Bag" on Rt. 123 here in Fairfax to sign autographs of the album (am still kicking myself because I never bought one). Sorry but I've never heard of the group "Heavy Jelly" that you were referring to. Peace, Rusty (5/17/07)

Chris from Germantown says that the Opie & Anthony suspension from XM happened beacuse it is related to the proposed merger of XM and Sirius, that XM is "kissing the Fed's behinds." Maybe they are also kissing Howard Stern's ass because he might not want to share morning drive with Opie & Anthony. Who knows? It's just my unfounded theory. I still think Howard is better than O & A, and I don't give a shit what happens to XM. JOHN IN STAFFORD (5/17/07)

What, in the long term, is Falwell's legacy? A politically active group of religious conservatives, reflected here in our local radio by WAVA and Salem Broadcasting. Falwell and Limbaugh both changed the image of radio in the United States. I disagreed with a lot of what he said; but he made sure that the Christian evangelicals in this country were heard, and are aware enough of their power to speak not to tolerate attempts to change current law with a revival of the "Fairness Doctrine." -- GAB in the Airless Cubicle (5/16/07)

Is WTWT the best Bonneville could do for 820/Frederick? It could be construed to mean Washington Times-Washington Times. The WLPZ calls are available to connote Ledo Pizza. (5/16/07)

RE: [ " if you are at the Delaware Beaches other than Fenwick Island you still will not be able to hear the Orioles. " ]........... When if ever did the Orioles have a signal at the Delaware beaches? I think you're more likely to find the Phillies on the radio there. OC was a hole they desperately needed to fill as 960 WTGM out of Salisbury is next to impossible to get in OC at night. (5/16/07)

"And to Mike in Fairfax -- When are you going to stop bitching about WTEM and it's lack of covering other sports?" - perhaps when it starts giving the other sports their just due. ... Well, that's been your complaint for something like three years now. While it is a valid one, WTEM is never going to change. It's time to move on. (5/16/07)

Dave's response: They left out one requirement - a solid GOP voting record.....

To the dummy that yammered on about OnA and the Junks. You mentioned that OnA didnt have the "juice" to unseat the Junkies as Morning hosts. Have you ever heard of a contract? The Junks, as average as they are, have a "morning contract" they cant just be moved around willy-nilly. You also said that XM paid too much for OnA. How much did Sirius pay for Howie again? Oh thats right 500 mil! And he reportedly had LESS subs than OnA for WAAAAAAAAAY more money. But he's worth it in your little mind. Now that is funny. (5/16/07)

How cheap and contemptible has local news become? This may just be a new low. In Pasadena, CA, the editor and publisher of the "Pasadena Now" website, just hired two reporters to cover the Pasadena City Council. One lives in Mumbai and will be paid $12,000 a year. The other will work in Bangalore for $7,200. Outsourcing THAT? And they call THAT local news? - Paul (5/16/07)

After nearly 60 years, the WTOP call letters are no longer assigned to an AM station. 820 Khz in Frederick is now WTWT. (5/16/07)

Dave's response: Huh? Twit or twat? With "WTWT" becoming WaPo Radio, what calls will Bonneville be putting on the Frederick 103.9 relay of WTOP, currently WGYS? How about WTIT.....

(I was wishing I was deaf after listening to the overlong and unfunny Bob Barker bit on today's Don & Mike show.) I've got an ice pick to make your wish a reality, if I don't have to read another idiot crying that they listen to a LARGE PART of someone's show they DON'T LIKE. TURN OFF YOUR GOD DAMN RADIO, better right take a right turn into an overpass. (5/16/07)

Regarding the D&M Barker bit comment, its definitely time for WJFK to be imploded. The station has never been worse than it is now. The Junks are wimps and D&M are hasbeens. There's nothing to listen to on weekends evenings. Pull the plug. Please! Give DC 98 Rock like active rock station. (5/16/07)

Hey, Rusty. No problem. Even if you gave me the right title, I still would have been stumped. I like being challenged. I was living in Kansas City at the time, and that song did not get played there. Thanks, Dave for allowing us to ask musical trivia questions, especially for the regional hits that we may or may not know about. And Rusty, keep 'em coming. Ed Jones, Bel Air MD (5/16/07)

A website has been set up by O&A fans to help you quickly cancel your XM Subscription. It can be found at www.cancelxm.com. It's also worth noting that according to the website 38,000 people canceled their subscriptions yesterday and that they got a record number of calls in the last 18 hours. That's pretty impressive for a 1 day total. Much higher than the normal rate of canceled subscriptions. (5/16/07)

Dave's response: Well, if O&A do plan to return to XM in 29 days, they'll have substantially fewer listeners.....

It's funny to me that O&A don't have anything to say about their suspension from XM. After all, O&A built XM as is if it was the place to be, where they can say anything anytime, do anything almost as if XM was heaven, where free speech was truly embraced. Is it because they don't have anything to say? Or is it because they don't want to contradict themselves? (5/16/07)

WMAL has a new news person? Bill Thompson? Wasn't he parttime over at WTOP? Supposedly Thompson will pop up with Grandy/Andy and then do da' nooze on Chris Core's rapper later in the morning. Is he replacing someone? (5/16/07)

I was wishing I was deaf after listening to the overlong and unfunny Bob Barker bit on today's Don & Mike show. (5/16/07)

If I'm recalling correctly--and there's no guarantee of that since the song Rusty is alluding to came out in the early 70s--Take Me Down to the River was perpetrated by a band called Heavy Jelly. How'd I do, Rusty? --The Ghost (5/16/07)

Dave, WKHZ operates at 1,000 watts during the day and 230 at night. The addition of WKHZ to the Orioles Radio Network will definitely be a help to the Orioles albeit limited on the Eastern Shore. The Orioles used to be on 1590 AM when it was then News/Talk WETT. I know the Orioles were trying to get on Talk Radio 101.1 WQMR but were unable because WQMR felt it would mess up their regular schedule too much. This is not a dig just fact, nine years of losing hurt the O's affliate situation on the Shore and stations opted out of carrying the O's. At one point the Orioles were totally covered on the Eastern Shore with affiliate 106.3 WCEM-FM out of Cambridge, AM 960 WTGM out of Salisbury, AM 540 WDMV in Pocomoke City and AM 1590 WETT out of Ocean City. You could of course get the Orioles at night on WBAL down through Salisbury and sometimes into Ocean City. I am trying to remember when the Orioles stopped airing on WETT. I believe it was the mid to late 90s. I know at one point AM 960 WTGM was also simiulcast on 106.9 WRXS which has an almost exclusive beach signal and you could hear the O's very well in Ocean City. So the Orioles now air on 1320 AM WICO out of Salisbury I believe just on the weekends. They also air on either 540 WDMV or 106-5 WKHW out of Pocomoke City and now 1590 WKHZ out of Ocean City. I know when I worked at Great Scott Broadcasting one of the formats we were talking about putting on the air on 107-5 WKHI included the Orioles in our programming. They would have had great coverage on the Shore at that point. We ended up going in a different direction however. Tom in Denton is right though, if you are at the Delaware Beaches other than Fenwick Island you still will not be able to hear the Orioles. -Michael Popovec (former ESRTV Editor, now on-air host at Sports Talk 1570 WNST) (5/16/07)

Is it just me or does 106.7 sound different? I can’t really describe it other than to say it sounds like it has less “life.” Like there used to be a subwoofer and now it is turned off. I’ve noticed this both on O’Reilly and Geronimo’s show… Darren (5/16/07)

Dave's response: I find 106.7's signal rather "choppy" even here in Wild West Fairfax, just a few miles from the transmitter. Sometimes Baltimore's 106.5 and Hagerstown's 106.9 both "rise up" to drown out Fairfax's 106.7. Strange, huh.....

(snip) --- blatant lies which have been attested to by current and former Radio America employees for over ten years --- (end snip) Name at least two, loudmouth. Comment without attribution isn't worth dick. BTW, sad to see you are still bitter over your own personal experience. (5/16/07)

If/When XM shit-cans O&A it will be due to one or some of the following factors: 1. O&A could not be favorities of XM management - does anyone remember their, unfunny, disastrous "assault on the media"? That little stunt complicated an XM/ABC deal, but hey - it was a brilliant move on O&A's part - encouraging "pests" to harrass remote local news broadcasters by screaming "O&A Party Rock", yes that was inspired radio in retrospect!; 2. Love him or hate him, XM talkers were going to have to make nice with Howie. If the merger goes through, Howie is the 800-lb. gorilla - and I think Howie must have enough influence to nix O&A in a merged world. Really good radio could occur when Howie and O&A were forced into the same studio - I'd pay to hear that!; 3. O&A weren't producing great numbers on FreeFM, and XM could easily justify a separation by disclsoing how truly paltry O&A's XM numbers are - but that would be a little problem for XM, revealing once again how XM paid way too much for talent that produced too little (other than hype); 4. O&A aren't particulary talented broadcasters, for two years they've replayed sound bites from local news or the Tyra Banks show and commented on it - riveting entertainment that. Knowing they don't have much to say, the boys really leaned way too much on Jim Norton or other guest comics to carry the show - and Norton's act gets old real quick, we get your pedofile/tranny jokes Lil' Jimmy, and we know you are a Black Sabbath/Ozzy fan - yawn; 4. On a local note - O&A didn't even have the juice with CBS to unseat the Junks on JFK so they would be live in a top 10 radio market - O&A have no trouble attacking Mancow and just about any other TV/radio personality - they oddly, they stayed mum about other CBS "talent" (i.e., the Junks, D&M), so in the end maybe the boys weren't the edgy rebels they claimed to be, instead, we see a couple of lucky no talents who have a track record of really bad judgment when it comes to show content. Welcome to "Planet Greaseman" boys!! Habadogee!! (5/16/07)

Jesus Dave, did you honestly turn on O&A today expecting to hear them rip on XM? Come on, Dave...you're smarter than that....You know damn good and well that part of the XM suspension was a gag order to not mention the event that led to the suspension, XM itself, or anything pretaining to XM....And if that gag order was broken...boom...immediate firing...Now, I HIGHLY doubt O&A want to be shit canned off XM..no matter how unjust they feel the suspension was...Cash is king...and that XM gig brings in cash for them.... (5/16/07)

So when does the FCC and the IRS step in and tell the Department of Justice to file against James Roberts and his scam 503(c) non-profit? Statements on their website and in their literature such as "Programs are broadcast via three satellites and over 400 affiliates carry our programs." are blatant lies which have been attested to by current and former Radio America employees for over ten years. If they have 40 affiliates for any single program they are lucky. And if they are cumulatively piggybacking the rebroadcasts of Doug Stephen's Good Day from other syndicator's satellites to make up that "400 affiliates" number, then a nice letter to every advertiser anyone hears should do the trick to squeeze off the money flow of that scam. That is, IF they had advertisers. I'm sure the publically available list of "donors" to Radio America would find that kind of letter just as interesting. Christ, if I may use that word, Air America has more credibility. (5/16/07)

RE:" Open request to XM - PLEASE tally the number of people who cancel their subscriptions due to the O&A suspension." The numbers will be there for all to see when XM reports their earnings after the end of the quarter. Subscriber adds and losses are always a part of the statement. (5/16/07)

A few comments on recent events- 1) The mailbag runneth over with talk of the passing of a rotund reverend who espoused bronze age superstitions, frequently in an intolerant and hurtful manner. He may have been well intentioned, but so was Torquemada. At least Torquie had the balls to back up his words with a little action. The reverend did nothing but hit the banquet circuit and shake a tambourine from time to time. The loss of Falwell lightens the oppression of our culture a little bit. Here's some examples of the reverend's handiwork for God- On Sept. 11: "The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way—all of them who have tried to secularize America—I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.' " On AIDS: "AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals." On homosexuality: "I believe that all of us are born heterosexual, physically created with a plumbing that's heterosexual, and created with the instincts and desires that are basically, fundamentally, heterosexual. But I believe that we have the ability to experiment in every direction. Experimentation can lead to habitual practice, and then to a lifestyle. But I don't believe anyone begins a homosexual." On Martin Luther King Jr.: "I must personally say that I do question the sincerity and nonviolent intentions of some civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mr. James Farmer, and others, who are known to have left-wing associations." On Martin Luther King Jr., four decades later: "You know, I supported Martin Luther King Jr., who did practice civil disobedience." On public education: "I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again, and Christians will be running them." On the separation of church and state: "There is no separation of church and state." On feminists: "I listen to feminists and all these radical gals. ... These women just need a man in the house. That's all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they're mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They're sexist. They hate men; that's their problem." On global warming: "I can tell you, our grandchildren will laugh at those who predicted global warming. We'll be in global cooling by then, if the Lord hasn't returned. I don't believe a moment of it. The whole thing is created to destroy America's free enterprise system and our economic stability." On Bishop Desmond Tutu: "I think he's a phony, period, as far as representing the black people of South Africa." On Islam: "I think Mohammed was a terrorist. I read enough of the history of his life, written by both Muslims and non-Muslims, that he was a violent man, a man of war." On Jews: "In my opinion, the Antichrist will be a counterfeit of the true Christ, which means that he will be male and Jewish, since Jesus was male and Jewish." But we digress. 2) I get tired hearing idiots rant about the First Amendment every time their preferred shock jock(s) get canned. The first amendment prevents Congress (and, by extension, the Federal government) from infringing on our right to speak. I've never listened to O&A despite my long-time XM subscription. In fact, I didn't even know that they were on XM. Fire them, don't fire them. American couldn't care less. Intelligent citizens have no dog in this fight. And- by the way- satellite radio was not created to avoid the F.C.C., dope. It was created as a money-making venture by several broadcast companies. They are beholden to their C.E.O.s, their Chairmen of the Board, and their stockholders- not the listening public. You want O&A to be protected by the first amendment? Get 'em a soapbox and a street corner. -Jamesonian (5/16/07)

I called XM today to tell them that I would not be renewing my 3 year sub when it runs out soon. I said that 202 is advertised as UNCENSORED and labeled XL as is 65 and 66. 65 and 66 happen to be hardcore UNCENSORED rap channels where you can often hear ho, bitches, murder, anti-police, pro violence, pro drug, and pro gun lyrics all day. I told them that they dont seem to have a problem with that at all. (And I'm only a casual OnA listener) (5/16/07)

They just went from Mudvayne to Nickelback to Bob Marley to Sparta to Slipknot to Bush to a new track from Social Distortion... Wouldn't it be nice if WHFS were to come back to DC as a true alternative rock station like Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles. - SOURCE: www.allaccess.com - Rumba 104.5/Philly Becomes 'Radio 104.5' - CLEAR CHANNEL has dumped the Spanish format on WUBA (RUMBA 104.5)/PHILADELPHIA, is replacing it with Alt/Rock-based "RADIO 104.5," and has launched a marketing campaign asking listeners to "Help build Radio 104.5." The station launched a splash page at www.Radio1045.com that allows listeners to participate by telling 104.5 what they want to hear, helping the station find and showcase local bands and allowing listeners to audition to become part of the station. The website features artists such as GREEN DAY, FOO FIGHTERS, LINKIN PARK, RAMONES, THE CLASH, NIRVANA, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, DAVE MATTHEWS, PEARL JAM, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, U2, SUBLIME, THE CURE, THE POLICE and BOB MARLEY. In addition, a charter group of advertisers will become music sponsor partners and be offered unique advertising opportunities that will allow their businesses to be showcased in RADIO 104.5’s unique environment. "PHILADELPHIA has been underserved and RADIO 104.5 wants to give the TRI-STATE another choice with a fresh approach by acting on input from advertisers and listeners," said CLEAR CHANNEL/PHILADELPHIA OM THEA MITCHEM. "We are thrilled to bring this unique format to PHILADELPHIA!" said Pres./Market Manager MANUEL RODRIGUEZ. "In addition, we have moved RUMBA down the dial to 1480 AM [Gospel WDAS-A], so we will continue to serve the RUMBA listeners as well. It is a rare opportunity indeed when all of our listeners can get radio their way." (5/16/07)

It is absolutely ridiculous that O & A can be suspended for something they SAY on XM Radio. The original purpose of XM and Sirius was to allow the complete unabashed freedom of speech. Oh, wait – that was before a possible merger of the two that will ultimately be decided by an anti-trust hearing in Washington. I hope sexy Condi Rice is there. --- At least the greatest show on earth is replaying all day on 202 – Long live Ron & Fez --- welcome back Fezzy. Mitch (5/16/07)

Open request to XM - PLEASE tally the number of people who cancel their subscriptions due to the O&A suspension. Seriously, it will help put to rest this canard (that's a big word for LIE pests) that O&A have any audience (much less influence) on satellite radio. The tens of people who cancel, on top of the handful of "protesters" that make up this supposed army are more like a platoon (at best) that could not even fill up a barracks, much less influence multi-billion dollar corporations. PS ..Since O&A claimed they welcomed the challenge of putting on a show on "free" FM I strongly encourage the suits at CBS and the affiliates to hold them to their promise and can O&A for not drawing flies on terrestrial radio either. It's over Johnny ..IT'S OVER (5/16/07)

For those asking about Charles McCord and his appearance on MSNBC this morning. McCord has been on WFAN since the Imus show was cancelled. He has been with a mix of hosts and on Monday and Tuesday he was teamed with Lou Dobbs of CNN. In the meantime MSNBC has been having a tryout contest with various hosts. This morning they started with David Gregory of NBC News, a woman whose name I forget, and McCord and Lou Rofino over in the WFAN studios. I must say that Gregory, the woman, and McCord seemed to be the best so far but I would bet that McCord would go with Imus to satellite or wherever he lands. (5/16/07)

Radio America's move to Ballston is complete. The network is now originating all programming from an all-digital studio cluster at the CACI Building on Glebe Road. (5/16/07)

"Gee, now that Jerry Falwell is dead, who will preach bigotry and intolerance? I guess Pat Robertson is still around. Paul" Nahhh... you just did a fine job with that last statement of yours, Paul! Neither of those two ever preached a prejudiced word against someone's race or religion. They BOTH, I will admit, have a RiDICULOUS case of homophobia. So, teach them to love. Don't throw rocks at them. Sincerely, Jesus (5/16/07)

Why hasn't anyone questioned the poor performance of the police and SWAT teams in the Virginia Tech incident? After spending millions and millions of taxpayer dollars on terrorist equipment, defense and drills; the police can't even stop lone gunmen (over a period of two hours or more) from a killing spree. How much training and money does it take to hide behind police cars, rocks and trees? The lack of action on the part of police amazes me and the fact the press doesn't even question this astounds me. (5/16/07)

To Ed Graham: You’re right, we don’t agree on everything, but you’re a gentleman and a class act…and that’s in addition to possessing one of the sharpest radio minds I’ve ever encountered. I look back fondly on those very turbulent yet oh so exhilarating days at WITH radio in the mid 90’s. As GM, you did a great ‘old school’ job of enhancing every aspect of that operation and skillfully managing the ‘mess’…and as a result…took that property a lot further than any of us thought it would go. Lord willing, we’ll get an opportunity to work together again one day. – Bob Mathers (5/16/07)

There are rumors floating around online hinting at the fact that Opie and Anthony have been fired from XM. Being the radiophile mock jock loser that I am, I interviewed XM Radio on my fake radio show The Cosmic Circus late last night to find out the scoop: www.xpressgfx.com (MP3) (perrynoid interviews xm ) Perry - Winchester (5/16/07)

Ed My By Bud: My apologies as at first the song was titled "Down To The River" which was recorded by "THE DAMNATION OF ADAM BLESSING" Remember them? Your Pal in the Trivia Nation, Rusty Gibson WEBR Radio/Fairfax (5/16/07)

Concerning the Orioles being heard in Ocean City: I am glad that they once again have a station there that carries the Orioles! However..that doesn't help coverage on the mid-shore; last Sunday, we my mother and myself) traveled to Rehoboth Beach...I think we lost 105.7 when we hit Greenwood, De; I did try listening on WICO (1320; the signal was just good enough that..if you had a little bit of motor noise in the car radio, it would cancel it out! I do get 105.7 here in Denton..but I just don't know that it covers the whole mid-shore area! How far does this station in Ocean City's signal travel? Tom in Denton, MD. (5/16/07)

Dave's response: Isn't OC's WKHZ 1590 a daytimer? Does it have any night signal?

O&A update. www.923freefm.com says the May 19 Opie and Anthony Texas Hold'em Tournament has been canceled. Looks like they might really be gone. (5/16/07)

I just got an email from the JUNKIES, I beleive it was EB because he was too scared to leave his name. I simply, with-out malice or cursing, emailed to tell them that I didn't like a segment. He told me to "just die". I notice that the JUNKS have no problem when I give them props on things like I did after the UFC interveiw last week. Grow a pair Bickell you thin skinned imbecile. (5/16/07)

This is to the person who asked about Don Imus sidekick Charles McCord. Yes, I did see him this morning. He is not at the MSNBC studios. Looks like he is at WFAN. But yes, I did see him this morning. David Gregory made a crack about him being in a small room. (5/16/07)

Hi there, If you read on Opie and Anthony Fans Forum at www.pestgaming.com, www.wackbag.com, and www.fullblownaids.com. Thousands of fans with 1 to 5 units are canceling the subscription due to the suspension. -- See Ya! Christopher Yee (5/16/07)

Thank goodness I was listening to Mack David on WMMJ this morning at 6am or I would have not known that Yolanda King had died. But, every station was talking about Jerry Falwell. Given it was an Urban station, but where is the balance? I later was able to hear a portion of a speech she gave on the Dr. King Holiday several years ago, which showed her flair for the dramatics, since she was an actress. Just kudos to a station not really known for news, providing ALL the news and good coverage. Ken/Bethesda (5/16/07)

Dave's response: Yeah, very sad. Only 51. Possible heart problem.....

Howard Stern would NEVER get in a situation like Opie and Anthony are in. He will never get in trouble for something he says on the radio and will never get suspended for the content of his show. Clearly, Howard....um...has no listeners. (5/16/07)

WOW!!! Rusty, you went deep on me. I don't even remember this song. When I first saw the song title, I thought it was a song by Syl Johnson, which was recorded later by the Talking Heads. But is isn't. Take Me Down to the River, hmmm. I'll have to say, I don't know who recorded it. I'm looking to see the answer. Ed Jones, Bel Air MD (5/16/07)

"And to Mike in Fairfax -- When are you going to stop bitching about WTEM and it's lack of covering other sports?" - perhaps when it starts giving the other sports their just due. While there's no question that the Redskins are the big enchilada around here and basketball has a larger following than hockey, that doesn't justify acting as if there were no fans of the Nationals, Capitals or even DC United in your listening audience. CSN's Washington Post Live show has done a few segments on United since debuting earlier this spring, a recognition that this soccer franchise is highly successful and has a sizable following despite flying under the radar most of the time. I will say this - WTEM's the clear choice over Triple X for local sports fans not necessarily in the habit of painting their faces burgundy and gold. Apparently the latter will be originating its programming from a Redskins festival in Virginia Beach later this week, although I understand that the interviews with cheerleaders on the Bram Weinstein and John Riggins shows promise to be hard hitting and confrontational. Mike, Fairfax (5/16/07)

Attention all female broadcasters who have ever gotten fired. Time to get even with your boss: washingtondc.craigslist.org (5/16/07)

Dave's response: Why does Beth Ann McBride come to mind?

It's hard to believe how many people who post on this board don't understand the difference between terrestrial radio and satellite. That would mean passive listeners would have no clue, and the Bush administration will use that to restrict more freedoms. If we let them. There is no "free speech" on the radio. It is and has been controlled for many years, but satellite is not. O&A can say anything (ANYTHING) they want on satellite. Their only control is their employers. If you don't like what they said, don't pay to hear them. If you don't pay to hear them, it's none of your business. On a happier note: To Rusty, it's the Talking Heads. To Joyce: I'll build some shelves. To Bob Mathers: I like your spirit, even when we don't agree. Thank you for ultimateoldiesradio.com keep up the great work. Somebody has to. Ed Graham (5/16/07)

"Emmy award" winning Jim Williams either has no idea what he is talking about, or he is a shill for anyone in the media business. Dave Feldman is nothing more than OK on TV and terrible on the radio. Rick "Doc" "Cliche" Walker is absolutely dreadful. Everything is a cliche or a corny nickname and his new co-host belongs in a smaller market at best. This is the truth....Jim Williams, now you can add the fluff and you would have a good article. (5/16/07)

Inside Radio is reporting that GoodRadio, the company buying Clear Channel Salisbury, will have to spin off two stations seperately. Does anyone know which two that will be? (5/16/07)

Gee, now that Jerry Falwell is dead, who will preach bigotry and intolerance? I guess Pat Robertson is still around. Paul (5/16/07)

Dave's response: The next related obit will probably be for Tammy Faye Bakker, the "drippy mascara" former wife of disgraced evangelist Jim Bakker. She is dying of cancer. You know, I've actually started to admire her. She was featured in a series of spiritual rediscovery programs about their son, Jay, on the Sundance Channel earlier this year. And she seems to have dropped many of her fundamentalist, conservative stances, even advocating quite tolerant views on sexual orientation. More proof that the Lord works in mysterious ways.....

This morning, Brian Nehman said on WMAL that "29 percent of Americans" watched last night's GOP debate on Fox News. Really? With a US population of 300 million, that means that 87 million people - !!!! - watched the debate. That's about three or four TIMES the audience for "American Idol." Really Brian? Or are you just believing the Fox News spin without question? (5/16/07)

Aren't Jim Williams and The Examiner a perfect fit? A lousy columnist for a lousy paper.....Columists should be critical at times, and it seems like he doesn't have the balls to be critical." Totally agree. Here's this "media critic" being a guest every Friday on Anita Marks' show. How can he be critical of her or that station? You can't believe what he says. (5/16/07)

(RE: The O& A official website WACKBAG.COM is reporting as of 9:45 pm Tues May 15, that the boys have NOW BEEN FIRED.) NOTHING IS CONFIRMED (5/16/07)

To the two unsigned posters and your comments. Thanks for writing. I understand your sentiments, as they've been expressed previously by others in relation to Falwell. I'm not interested in defending him as such, but I would ask if you would please clarify a few things in these observations? To the most recent poster: Do you know what a Pharisee is? Go read the gospels, as Jesus himself addressed the pharisaic hypocrisy in a very specific vein. You say Falwell was a man of division, hate, and condescension, and Jesus preaches 'love, acceptance, and humility'? Jesus did indeed preach love and humility, but please tell us what you mean by 'acceptance'? Do you mean Jesus accepts certain sins...or behaviors? Now He will forgive sinful behavior if we 'humble' ourselves and ask for the forgiveness, but He does not sanction, or as you say 'accept it'. And, if you believe that Jesus accepts many ways to God...then would you please read John 3:16 and 14:6 and then expound on your opinion amidst those words, please? Kinda defeats the whole purpose of His going to the cross in the first place, doesn't it? Back to Falwell. He was indeed political, which was exactly my point in the original post. He spoke up. Not to argue with people, but to champion the cause of Christ and share the good news. Lord knows, the secular progressive movement doesn't want any parts of it proclaimed anywhere except within the 4 walls (and even that would be done away with) but maybe, just maybe one soul is wanting some good news and would like to know about that good news. If that's political, then many souls in heaven are rejoicing today! To the first respondee: If you call the bible that Falwell preached perverse, then you may not truly understand what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Falwell did by the way, apologize for the comments surrounding 9/11. That's on record. His 'view' of family values lines up with scripture, too. Now, you are the one in describing your 'view' of 'Christianity' who has in fact, moved the yardstick to suit your comfort level. You also call Falwell a 'creature'. Why...that's mighty Christian of you. Good discussion. Anyone else want to weigh in? Here's Big Dee Irwin and the Pastels from '59, coming out of a PAMS series 18 Sonovox jingle. - Bob Mathers (5/16/07)

This suspension of O&A has NOTHING to do with how offensive the bit was, or freedom of speech. It has to do with the proposed merger. XM is desparate to keep that in play, and therefore is kissing the Feds behinds in every way, shape, and form. They have completely disregarded the whole premise of that station (202) in a bid to pacify the government in any way possible, hoping to grease the wheels of this ill-fated merger. All the more sad, since that thing is too anti-competitive to ever allow through. On the other hand, all kinds of anti-competitive mergers have been sliding through since the Clinton Administration. Dave says that Howard Stern has "lost a tremendous amount of his influence by no longer being on '"regular"' radio..." I wonder if Howard Stern cares about his influnece on society, or anything else, at this point. He has said repeatedly that he probably would have quit radio altogether, if the Sirius deal hadn't come along, when his last contract with CBS expired because he was being hounded by politicians, and the the big shots in the radio industry weren't defending him. He felt that he was standing alone and being persecuted by right-wingers for his harsh criticism of the Bush administration during the last presidential election. Did the Bush administration go after him? I don't know. He felt like they were after him, using Clear Channel to do it by firing him from their stations. Supposedly, the CEO of Clear Channel was a Bush buddy. Who could blame Howard Stern if he chooses to take his money and abandon the radio industry when his current contract expires? JOHN IN STAFFORD (5/16/07)

i have worked in sports tv for 21 years...nobody i know has ever heard of jim williams including two former executive producers that I know from the Sunshine Network in FLA.....as for emmy's WE all have regional emmy's...it is flattering but not the same as a national emmy... just a nice recognition of your work.....my understanding is jim does "stories" and then sends them to be approved by the PR people (MASN, Comcast SportsNet) of whom he does the stories before they get in print....that is fine but then he is a story teller/promotions writer not a sports journalist, that i think i obvious. (5/16/07)

Have Opie & Anthony been fired from XM Radio? The webmaster of Wackbag.com posted this on the homepage of the site a little while ago: "I have received word that O&A have been FIRED from XM!!! I was told this by an extremely trusted source, and not an employee/relative of an XM employee. Get on the phone, cancel your XM. DO NOT take the 30-day credit - CANCEL it! XM will feel that much more on their bottom line than a 30-day dip. If XM feels the sting of thousands of people canceling their subs, then there is some sort of a chance! What to do next?? THINK SNATCHING YOUR MONEY BACK FROM XM ISN'T ENOUGH? WANT TO MAKE MORE OF AN IMPRESSION ON XM?? TOMORROW MORNING (5/16/07), THERE WILL BE A PROTEST OF XM, AND A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PRESS AT THE FREE FM STUDIOS IN NY! BRING YOUR XM UNIT TO SMASH IT IN PROTEST!! MAKE SOME NOISE!! AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE SHOW!!! (yes, I know I sent the e-mail with the wrong date :-/) -zag" (5/16/07)

To the followers of Jerry Falwell: Tuesday was a most terrible day for you, I'm sure. After the shock of Rev. Falwell's passing has subsided, you will no doubt begin to hold out hope that Pastor Jerry will one day return - riding shotgun with Jesus - in His day-glo purple Rapture-Mobile! If I may, I would like to share with you, just a few words to help bring you the solace and comfort, that only reality can provide. The reading is from The Book of the Parrot Sketch, by St. Monty of Python... "'E's passed on! This Reverend is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'E rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the pulpit 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-REVEREND!!" Bless you all, in this difficult time! (5/16/07)

Maybe I have a solution for XM and O and A. O and A could move to XM 66, where they would fit right in with XM Raw's music with lyrics containing ethnic and racial slurs, and songs about violence against women and police officers. What do you think XM??? ernie kyger (5/16/07)

Dave, while true that O&A are now in many top markets, their ratings are at best marginally better than what David Lee Roth was getting. To suggest that Howard's influence has diminished simply ignores the reality of radio today. O&A have been pulled in Dallas and (I think) San Francisco. Their rating in NYC, the "home market," is 1.9, good for 18th. Their reach has never remotely been close to what the PR they gin up would suggest. (5/16/07)

Dave – Didn’t see that you had picked up the confirmation of this story (which you have been following and surmising on). Disney is definitely spinning off just about its entire radio operation, including its DC area stations – WRQX, WJZW, WMAL. Disney is going to merge the radio operations with Citadel and then spin off its interest in Citadel to Disney shareholders. Here is the SEC filing that explains it - amedia.disney.go.com. (5/16/07)

(RE: Dave's response: Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if O&A "quit" XM or get "fired.") Well said. If that is the case, I will take comedian Jim Norton’s advice to a disgruntled trucker by the name of “Dragin’ Wagon” from an O&A show years ago [they were only on XM] to cancel my XM subscription, flush the unit down the toilet, and go F*** my mother. My point is that there will always be a part of the population that can appreciate comedy and those that are extremely offended by it. – Stu, Fairfax (5/15/07)

So, in response to the person or group running the pop station on 810 in Annapolis. Does anyone think that modern top 40 is something that will or works on AM? I mean, does it generate revenues. What music formats do generate revenue on the AM band? There are music stations on that band scattered around the area, but are they operating at a loss? Just wanted to get some real input--so those who are bitter or really don't know, please don't waste time to reply. Mucho Gracias! (5/15/07)

Hey Dave, I live in Baltimore county, MD and I wanted to know if there’s a resource website, or if you’ve heard of any new HD channels coming to Towson/Baltimore? Thanks and you have a great website! Dave (5/15/07)

Dave's response: No, I haven't heard anything specific. Check out my Comcast lineup for Reston VA and see if you get the same HD channels offered here. Naturally, I can't see 'em since I still have only a standard-def set.....

I dont know if it's true, but it's being widely reported on an unofficial OnA board that they have been FIRED! (5/15/07)

Dave's response: Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if O&A "quit" XM or get "fired." Now that they have re-built a broadcast radio base after 2002's sex-in-a-church stunt yanking, including many of the top 10 markets, O&A really have no need for XM any longer. Look at Howard Stern. Sure, he's made a boatload of money by jumping to Sirius, but he's lost a tremendous amount of his influence by no longer being on "regular" radio.....

Thank you, Mike C in Silver Spring, for finally nailing "exactly what is wrong with this country." Now all we have to do is round up all the O&A haters out there and learn them right. Suddenly, no more global warming, gas is 44 cents a gallon again, everyone is paid a fair wage, no more road rage, radio is listenable again, and so on. You, Mike C in Silver Spring, are a genious! Future generations are sure to build a memorial in your honor taller than the Washington Monument. (5/15/07)

Bob Mathers.... Falwell is simply a modern day Pharisee who found it profitable to sow division, hate, and condescension. Rather than spread the word of God through the righteousness of the 10 commandments which even most atheists agree are still good moral codes, or the love, acceptance, and humility preached by Jesus, he chose to ignore all of that and work to politically divide and polarize people. I've heard from those who have come across him that he was a nice guy, and I have no reason to doubt it. But the work he did isn't nearly as good as some want you to believe. (5/15/07)

Aren't Jim Williams and The Examiner a perfect fit? A lousy columnist for a lousy paper. I stopped reading his columns a long time ago because they are a waste of time. Columists should be critical at times, and it seems like he doesn't have the balls to be critical. And to Mike in Fairfax -- When are you going to stop bitching about WTEM and it's lack of covering other sports? Look, you make good points, but almost every time you post here it's the same thing. It's really getting old. (5/15/07)

I am outraged by the decision that XM has made to keep O&A off of the air. XM pays them to be edgy and runs them in a supposedly uncensored format and yet they are suspended for a month. I heard the bit and thought it was absolutely hilarious. It is a sad day for pay radio when a show delivers as expected and is punished for it. I agree that the masses may be offended by this type of radio, but why should we let the masses override the desire of the consumer? Stu, Fairfax (5/15/07)

They should of been suspended years ago for not being funny.Ha Ha Har Har....... O&A suck!!! Long Live E.B. Lurch Cakes & JP............ Steve,VA (5/15/07)

To JA: You wondered in your post why "CBS has barely flinched" concerning OnA. Ugh, it may be because that segment never went out over thier airwaves, nor was it intended to. It was an XM bit only. Try to pay attention. (5/15/07)

Where is Big Al Sharpton when we need him? These two morons who were suspended for making sexual assault jests about the Secretary of State should be permanently fired by his reasoning after what he did to Imus. The Secretary of State is black isn't she? Not a word out of Sharpton. (5/15/07)

I don't listen to O&A, but suspended them... I don't get it. XM is paying them to be entertainers (something like standup comics), whether it's good or not, you can't suspend them. KING DAVE, give me a BREAK, HE SUCKS!!!!! And to just to put up a RED "X" for Jim Harriott, that's just COLD!!!! ~~~HEFFA (5/15/07)

Mr. Mathers, I'm sorry to disagree with you: Jerry Falwell was not a man of God in my opinion. No one has misused and abused the public airwaves quite like he, Pat Robertson, James Dobson and that ilk have done. Falwell's perverse view of Christianity (NOT the one I grew up with) would have you believe that women are fit only to be handmaidens, that other faiths are worthless and that his view of family values was the only one that mattered. He also was no man; he did not apologize for hateful, vicious statements, such as that 9/11 was caused by homosexuals, witches and liberals, or some such blather. I am sorry he is passed away, I certainly don't take any delight in it. But he was not a Christian man in my view; his actions and words disprove that theory. Perhaps this will give us pause for thought about those "Christian" stations that proliferate the landscape like locusts. Enjoy your oldies but goodies, and your fantasy of what that creature is or was. (5/15/07)

Ed Jones my Friend: OK, it's time for me try and stump you. This one came out circa 1970, didn't even chart in the top 40 but got heavy rotation on WEEL here in Fairfax. The song: "Take Me Down To The River" (to where I can be free"). Hint: NOT Neil Young or Foghat. Beyond that tune, this act did nothing commercially hat I'm aware of. Good Luck! Rusty Gibson WEBR Radio/Fairfax (5/15/07)

Hey Ed: One word of warning. I have this compulsion to collect CD's and LP's so you may wish to reconsider. Just wanted to invite everyone to tune into "Oldies Block Party" on WHFC this weekend as I will be interviewing Tommy James. Tommy celebrated his 60th birthday on April 29th and was very gracious to take time from his touring schedule to talk with us . Also, as a salute to our wonderful veterans, the show on June the 2nd will feature an interview with Gary Lewis and those performers who served (whether reluctantly or willingly). "OBP" is on Saturdays from 9-12 p.m. on 91.1 FM and we stream on the web at www.whfc911.org. To DCRTV Dave: Because you have allowed me this shameless show promotion, I feel it only fitting to send you some support. Thanks for the great job you do. Blessings. Joyce Conroy (WHFC) (5/15/07)

Dave's response: Thanks Joyce!

It’s sad to see disrespectful words posted about a man (Jerry Falwell), or any man for that matter…on the occasion of his passing. Eli, I’ll pray for you regarding your comments. I met Pastor Falwell at a radio convention in Washington D.C. a few years back and spent some time talking with him. He was a true ‘down-home’ gentleman who loved the Lord and cared very much about people. I realize that those who disagree with Rev. Falwell’s stands on a number of issues may not see it that way. Falwell was much maligned for speaking out on a number of subjects. Nevertheless, he was passionate about souls and preaching the Word of God and was determined to speak up for morals and values when many were compromising or rejecting them altogether. He also admitted when he was wrong…which makes a man a ‘real’ man when he can humble himself and say I’m sorry. Our prayers and thoughts go out this evening for the Falwell family. Bob Mathers – Seattle, Washington (5/15/07)

I have notified XM Radio that I have SUSPENDED them for 30 days for violating my listening habits. I told them that this is no way to grow a business. I guess it's time to break out the Ipod.--Rob, Alabama (5/15/07)

A defender of WINC’s status quo writes “WINC does very well in Winchester. It would take a buyer like Bonneville to assume they could do better and then render the frequency completely moot inside a year.” Uh, not so fast. Although there’s no reason to think that Centennial has other immediate plans to change 92.5 at this point, it’s not a stretch to think that the folks who run Centennial won’t understand eventually that there’s much more money available to them in the market of 2 million east of Paris Mountain & south of the Potomac than they’ve generated as the #2 player in Winchester’s little market of less than 200,000. Frankly, if they only made adjustments in WINC’s current format appropriate to a Hot AC in a wealthy suburban market of 2 million people—that is, something that would be competitive in a Denver or a KC—they’d quadruple the billing in a couple of years and generate the kind of cashflow to completely cover their investment—in terms of WINC’s market value alone—for the whole group. In other words, it’s a gold mine. The Lewises are very nice people and have always run commendable radio stations. And they’ve made a boatload of money, in both cable TV & radio. But, aside from old Richard F., who had the foresight to put that stick on that mountain overlooking Suburban DC—50 years before it happened—they never really understood what they had. Or, at least, were never willing to make the investment necessary to mine all that gold. (5/15/07)

950-AM WCTN has been silent all day today. Not even the local "management" team noticed? (5/15/07)

To Mike C: Do not insult me by the insinuation that I am a Howard Stern fan. I am not, and I have written none of the ranting platitudes that his fans (or should I say, Sirius employees) post ad nauseum on this board about O&A. I don't listen to either one. You have missed the point entirely. They let that homeless character (he's not I'm sure) say those things on the air, and they egged him on. They were in charge of the show, they dictate the pace of the show and they dictate what goes on. They are ultimately the ones responsible for the things that guy said. If you'd read my post, note that I am concerned about a selective morality or political correctness that is hitting the business. Imus gets canned, but Sharpton can say whatever he wants. O&A let someone go on about what he'd like to do to Condi Rice, but Glenn Beck can talk about killing Michael Moore. Howard may be getting off scot-free right now, but I'm sure Sharpton and his ilk will get to him soon. Now let me make it real clear for you, Mike: the public airwaves should be free and open. As far as I'm concerned the seven words George Carlin got in trouble with, I can see why they're banned; we should be able to joke, we should be able to make political statements, and if you don't like it, leave it be. It is management that decides who stays and goes. Don't be pissed at me; be pissed at XM management and let 'em know you are. The RCL (5/15/07)

Man, it is getting pretty bad when anyone gets suspended from SatRad. But can't blame this one on anyone but the suits at XM, and those two goofballs. Yet CBS has barely flinched. They don't mind yanking Imus for a racial remark, but the two goofballs can obviously get away with sexual harassment on broadcast radio. JA (5/15/07)

To the poster with the name: The RCL. You are exactly what is wrong with this country. When you write, "but the fact they made some pretty hideous comments about what would be criminal activity was over the line" shows how misinformed you are. They did not say anything. It was a homeless man who was fantasizing about what he would do to Condi Rice, Laura Bush and the queen. He was trying to be funny and in my opinion was succeeding because I was laughing. See that is how I judge if something is funny, how hard and long I laugh. Was there even 1 iota of seriousness in the whole rant, no. Who the F*ck was upset over this? You? I can tell that you sure as shit weren't listening. Other people who actually heard it in context? Oh you mean the people who are paying $13 a month to hear this type of humor. This is a sad day, it is almost surreal that we have reached this point. And someone said it earlier below. Anybody who is a fan of Satellite radio should be very scared. Howard fans included. What is your hero so bullet proof that he can say whatever he wants and not worry about it. I don't think so. Don't think this pack of psychos who want to get everyone fired don't feel empowered with every victory they notch under their belt. And do not come crying to the mailbag after they come after his ass. Mike C in Silver Spring (5/15/07)

Well, O&A seem to be coming closer to blowing up even more bridges. Their little vacation probably won't make much of a dent in their egos. I fully support freedom of speech, but I do think a suspension was appropriate, considering their weak apology. They did target public figures (who are aware that they're gonna get picked on), but the fact they made some pretty hideous comments about what would be criminal activity was over the line. The problem I'm seeing now is, will there be even-handedness in dealing with shock jocks, DJs and talk show hosts? I think not: witness last week's anti-Semitic slur emitted by the Alleged Rev. Al Sharpton on his program, one of many he's made over the years. Perfectly OK for him to spit racist and anti-Semitic slurs, but oh if Imus or O&A do something, it's time for their heads. Others of note: Mike Gallagher tried to hire a hit man on the air years ago to kill Craig Kilborn, and Glenn Beck recently mused about wanting to kill Michael Moore. As usual, freedom of speech is okay for some, but not for others. The RCL (5/15/07)

This site claims O&A will continue on CBS stations - weird: www.recordonline.com... YJ (5/15/07)

O&A/Free speech....All this talk about 1st amendment....We as broadcasters DON'T HAVE 1st amendment rights. It's always been that way and will ALWAYS be that way.You Have the right to stand on your soap box in the town square and say WHATEVER you want,But get on the public air waves, that's a totally different story. (5/15/07)

RE: " Better watch out XM, the Pest Army (35K strong and shrinking!) might call for a mass cancellation of their subscriptions...." " So O&A get suspended errr a paid 30 day vacation from XM...." Maybe Dave should institute a new rule that everyone should have to post a name or an alias to post a comment here, that way we'll all know exactly who to thank when these special interest groups move on to their next killing. You people make me sick today. What, you honestly don't think that these people aren't going to target your beloved Howie next??? Wake up and smell the fucking Nazis, people and get over your little obsession with all things Howard and your constant desire to please him. Fucking pathetic, all of you Hoo-Hoo dopes! Hoo-Hoo, I invented radio suspensions, Rahh-bin....Hoo-Hoo-Hoo-Hoooo! And the name is Kevin from HdG, MD (because I'm not a gutless pussy like you Hoo-Hoo-homos.) (5/15/07)

Better watch out XM, the Pest Army (35K strong and shrinking!) might call for a mass cancellation of their subscriptions. If two unfunny shock jocks make comments that no one hears, was anyone offended? O&A always whine in the end, but I do have to hand it to them, they've drawn millions in salary without even having to show up to work. Maybe Howard will give you two chuckleheads an hour a week after Riley Martin. Looks like the beginning of the end (again!) for the talentless twosome! (5/15/07)

I didn't know Jim Williams was involved with the Sunshine Network. Perhaps he was also impressed with the work of former WBAL sports guy Jeff Rimer, whose grasp of anything beyond hockey was tenuous at best. His hockey knowledge wasn't that great either, but in Baltimore, where no one cared about hockey anyway, it's all he's remembered for. (5/15/07)

Centennial's roots are in the Beasely company. Some of the chiefs were head VP's when Beasely was laying waste to many competing stations up and down the east coast. And of course, the thing to do with top billing highly rated WINC-FM is to immediately change the format to one that is almost entirely unsaleable. All of you Jersey 101.5 fans seem to forget that WKXW is licensed to a major city in its coverage area, not a suburb. And they use their signal to target JERSEY, not NYC. WINC does very well in Winchester. It would take a buyer like Bonneville to assume they could do better and then render the frequency completely moot inside a year. (5/15/07)

If you place a show on satellite and allow supposed freedom, what do you expect to happen? XM has no backbone. (5/15/07)

So O&A get suspended errr a paid 30 day vacation from XM. Wonder how Tom C. and the suits at CBS will handle this. More importantly, think of all the extra skateboarding time Gregg can get in now that he doesn't have to show up to work! (5/15/07)

I can't believe they suspended Opie and Anthony. When does freedom of speech count? Why isn't an XL warning enough? Does anyone ever listen to Sean Hannity, or Chris Savage? Those are some racist, bigoted people. O&A go for the joke - always. This is why I got the radio - not for all of the other garbage. I hope this gets taken to the Supreme Court so we can see whether or not the Bill of Rights still exists. They will lose so many subscribers if you keep this up. The only reason this happened is so XM and and Sirius can merge. This is sad. So sad. America the Beautiful, right? This make me sick to my stomach. Thank God Jerry Falwell is DEAD. What a horrible, horrible, man. May he begin serving his punishment this very minute. Eli (5/15/07)

I agree completely with the "suck up" comment posted by another with respect to Jim Williams. He has his nose so far up Angelos' butt that it is embarrassing. How this man got Emmys is beyond me. “The main problem I have with WTEM relates to the proportion of time spent discussing the various major team sports” Not only that, but more and more the Sports Reporters are straying away from Sports. Yesterday they devoted 30 minutes starting at 6:00 to having callers call in and tell there best ticket scalping story from a non-sports related event. They followed that up with 5 minutes of Nationals talk. 5 minutes in a 3 hour show. They constantly do a segment that is non-sports related when they could use that time to talk baseball, hockey. It is very rare that they even have local players call in for an interview. As someone who listens to WFAN regularly online at work, WTEM is no where even close to being in the same ball-park as the other top sports-talk radio station in the country. (5/15/07)

Was it just the shirt she was wearing, or did Jennifer Gilbert of Fox 45's news look a wee bit pregnant last night? It wasn't noticeable from the straight-on shot, but when she turned to the side to look at the monitor behind her, she looked like she was showing a little bump. Later, when she was standing up to introduce a taped segment, she held a giant manilla folder in front of her midsection the whole time -- it reminded me of the way actresses' pregnancies are sometimes concealed on sit-coms. Just something to think about -- never ask a woman if she's pregnant unless you already know she is. (5/15/07)

Dave's response: Is there something wrong with a modern day American political party that is running a dozen or so candidates for president - and not one is a woman or a minority? Not a sermon, just a thought. No hate mail, please.....

Seeing that ad for WAVA with Carl Kasell ("Wayva News Time... 7:32") and Howard Dicus and the News Tip Hotline with no area code brought back a memory I'd completely forgotten: that in the old days (60s - 80s), you could call any number in the local area without the area code; and I mean you could be in Wheaton (301) and call Arlington (703) or Congress Hts. (202) by dialing just 7 digits. The exchanges were all unique within the Washington area. To call Staunton from Fairfax, though you had to dial 1-703-etc. I believe this area was the only place in the country where you could call out of state without dialing an area code. -- Carl in Olney (5/15/07)

Dave's response: I seem to recall that from Northern Virginia you had to dial a 202 for DC numbers and a 301 for Maryland, but the out of state calls were still local.....

Who is this Jim Williams guy? I've never seen a bigger suck up artist in my entire life. And he's supposed to be a sports radio/tv "critic?" What a waste of newsprint. (5/15/07)

Dave's response: Jim is an Emmy award-winning developer of regional sports TV networks, a la the Sunshine Network in Florida.....

top 40 on AM-810: There's WYRE in Annapolis, of course, but maybe 50,000 watt WKVM San Juan, PR, which runs the eclectic mix of oldies by day, Catholic format by night. WGY, Schenectady, NY has 50,000 watts as well, but a talk format. And there are no TV call letters KZH, WKZH, or CKZH in Canada. (5/15/07)

What can we expect from North Carolina-based Centennial Broadcasting to do with the Winchester stations? Can we expect a format change? I've never heard of Centennial Broadcasting ... what are they all about? Thanks, I'll hang up and listen to your response - Perry , Winchester VA (5/15/07)

At this point I believe that Jim Williams of the Examiner has zero credibility. He loves everyone. Never a critical remark about anyone in his columns. He apparently believes that if you can't say anything good about someone, don't say anything at all. This is objective journalism? (5/15/07)

From Jim Williams' latest column in the DC Examiner: "The addition of the [Doc] Walker and the Feldman & Maloney shows to WTEM's already strong lineup establishes Sports Talk 980 as one of the country's top storts talk radio stations." I wouldn't put WTEM in that lofty category just yet, as those two shows haven't been on the air long enough to critique them definitively while there are some obvious gaps and shortcomings associated with the the rest of the station's programming. Walker does seem more comfortable as lead host than Brian Mitchell did, although the latter had less experience in that role. Adding Mitchell to the John Thompson show also appears to be working out well. Unlike Walker, the ex-Skins kick returner doesn't necessarily bleed burgundy and gold 24/7. For that reason, he tends to be very candid and no holds barred in his critiques of the team's personnel decisions and performance on the field, not all that concerned about which parties may be offended. With Thompson often absent due to his hectic calendar of broadcasting, business and public speaking commitments, Mitchell's likely to get nearly as much air time as he did on his own show. Feldman & Maloney shows early promise of becoming the best listen on the station - great chemistry despite being on the air for only two weeks. The main problem I have with WTEM relates to the proportion of time spent discussing the various major team sports. If someone were to measure the amount of time the local programs devote to football and basketball versus baseball and hockey over the course of a year, it would probably come out to a roughly ten to one ratio. Even with the Wizards' season having ended a few weeks ago and the start of Redskin training camp more than two months away, the station still refuses to follow the lead of its counterparts up the northeast corridor and focus intently on the fortunes of the local baseball team. Nothing has been done to compensate for the departure of Marc Sterne (who hosted a weekly baseball oriented show on 980 for several years) to Post Radio. Yesterday, both the Thompson and Sports Reporters programs opened the phone lines on golf but not baseball. While there's little doubt that golf is very popular around the country right now, it seems to me that the Nationals should take priority over Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson when it comes to caller segments on a DC sports talk station. Not that the NHL's postseason merits the same amount of discussion time as the NBA playoffs, but Reporters barely acknowledges that hockey playoff games are taking place. Andy Pollin and Steve Czaban are in effect telling local hockey fans that their sport doesn't matter, an attitude not generally associated with top tier sports talkers. So Williams seems overly gushy in his praise for a station that clearly has a way to go before it can be mentioned in the same breath as New York's WFAN or Philly's WIP. Mike, Fairfax (5/15/07)

Thanks for that correction regarding Bob Barker. Indeed, it was "The Price is Right". Tom (5/15/07)

When NPR was running down the list of expenses during their recent fund raising, I was half expecting them to say "Diane Rheem life support". She has some good guests, but the interviews are painful to listen to. (5/15/07)

Congratulations on the purchase, Centennial. Now simply find a way to convert WINC-FM into "Northern Virginia 92.5," as has been suggested here (use WKXW-FM in Trenton, aka "New Jersey 101.5," as your template), and you'll have a goldmine on your hands as people in Prince William, Loudoun and Fairfax set a button for 92.5 on their car radios. -- Vincent in Triangle (5/15/07)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Bob Barker hosts "The Price is Right" on CBS. Pat Sajak hosts "Wheel of Fortune. (5/15/07)

Bob Barker hosts "The Price is Right." Everyone knows that, except Mr. Conroy. Just a slip. You are forgiven (5/15/07)

The real hero or, in this case, the heroine of Saturday's Nationals-Marlins rain-filled marathon was MASN's field reporter, Debi Taylor. The very pregnant Taylor was right there to interview Ryan Zimmerman after his game-winning grand slam at 1:42 in the morning. And Debi was back to work to do Sunday's game as well. Now, that's a trooper. (5/14/07)

It’s a safe bet that WBAL TVs Rod Daniels was right when he began a story last week beginning, “As you probably know by now, 3,000 people died on 9/11.” Yes, I suppose viewers probably do know that by now. Maybe Rod should have undergone newswriting surgery while he had that hip replaced. Bob in Pikesville (5/14/07)

WAGE heard in New Jersey! Yup! The other nite I heard 1200 AM from Loudon County, Virginia, just across the Hudson River from Da' Bronx! Incredible. It came in squeezed between 1190 AM in New York somewhere and 1210 AM in Philadelphia (WPHT). Of course, nothing local there on WAGE. What a waste. (5/14/07)

Regarding Diane Rehm's voice: she has a condition called Spasmodic Dysphonia...a disorder that affects the vocal chords. I don't listen to her, so I don't know how she sounds. It's a disorder that affects many people, including Scott Adams, the cartoonist who does "Dilbert," and my son. Fortunately for them, they don't have careers in radio...unfortunately for Diane Rehm, she does. But I'm sure she does the best she can under the circumstances. -- Bobbie (5/14/07)

On the Nats rain delay. First MASN does not run M*A*S*H* reruns. That came from WDCA 20. MASN runs ESPN News. (5/14/07)

I guess you already got confirmation but the CC-Salisbury sale is right on, should be done sometime in June. I believe though they will have to divest as CC-Salisbury owns six FMs, the new rules I believe only allow for four. I am sure the AM situation is different. Oh and by the way WLVW and WLBW are no longer simulcast, they have not been since Christmas 2004. -Michael (5/14/07)

High fee pay day loans, car title loans, "second chance credit" car dealerships, and technical colleges, including the law enforcement college, commercials have long been a staple on daytime television. The technical schools' commercials are designed to reach and motivate the severely under-employed, unemployed, and "what am I going to do with my life" crowd. Channels 9, 5, 20, 50 and others don't get paid to run these commercials, they get paid a commission on the number of phone calls that come from the commercial spot. After these schools were made eligible to receive student loans, their market by market expansion exploded around the country, and these "for profit technical schools" were the darlings of Wall Street. Every one of these schools' campi has several employees in the front office ready to help the prospective student apply for student loans before the student's "training" can begin. Some schools even get additional grants from the federal government (welfare to work), to teach simple working skills to the perpetually unemployed. Yes, they don't do much but teach the simplest job related skills, as well as motivate people to get their arse out of bed in the morning, and go learn something. Graduating from one of these schools is a somewhat big deal because most that enroll drop out, and get to keep the student loan bills as cancellation prizes. Jobs in law enforcement to these schools, I am sure, include mall security guards, guards that frisk at rock concerts, or one of those guys that work for a home alarm company with a sewn on badge who ride around in little Hyundai's. You gotta love daytime television; I must admit, though, I sing along with the Eastern's Motors commercials, and I think the chef chick is kind of cute. I also miss the "Check into Cash" Barbara Feldman look alike with the big hair. Damn Maryland state bank regulators running "Check into Cash" and the big haired chick out of this market! (5/14/07)

For many of us who grew up in the 60's and beyond, we remember over 50 years of Bob Barker, host of Wheel of Fortune, on CBS. I often think of the most memorable scenes, like the time one of Bob "beauties" ran the train thru the set, or the big island lady who won and picked Bob up and bear hugged him. (I hear this happened 3 times over the years!). Anyway, you know by now he is retiring at 83. CBS will be doing a tribute to him this Thursday, it should be some interesting TV. Has Baltimore/Washington ever had locally done game shows? The only thing close that I can think of is the long running "It's Academic" and a few bowling shows. Tom Conroy (5/14/07)

Does anyone else find Diane Rheem difficult, if not impossible to listen to? Not because of the subject or the guests, but because of the sound of her voice. I keep waiting for her to stop mid-sentence and never finish. (5/14/07)

Re: "He asked me to look at the material and if he had enrolled it would have cost him several thousand dollars without an ounce of a guarantee that it would have gotten him a job anywhere besides where he works now and any police department or the government would have laughed at his credentials" So what? That sounds like just about every other college and university in the world. Except it's a lot more than "several thousand dollars" to get the non-guarantee. (5/14/07)

Nats rain delay programming...after 45 minutes of taking listener calls we switched back to the affiliates & to regular weekend programming for the next two+ hours. The show that featured Sinatra, Ella, etc...is produced by Tony Bennett's foundation in conjunction with GW University and airs on both XM and WTWP every weekend. Radio Netherlands is the "obscure" European public affairs show. Dave...if you need more Korny, the Best of Kornheiser is actually on the WTWP webstream whenever there is a Nats game, due to the MLB restrictions against streaming online to promote their Gameday Audio on MLB.com. I'm not so sure we had lost 95% of the listeners due to the content, since no major league team fills rain delays longer than one hour with anything but regular programming, but I am sure it had everything to do with the lateness of the hour. It would be great to have a regular 7 - 10PM sports program year round to make the most of the relationship between WTWP, the Nats, GW and Navy Sports, with a host that could step in locally when we have unusually long rain delays.Of course, we could do what MASN does and start the reruns of M*A*S*H on the first droplet. At one point in the 3 hour delay I'm sure I saw the episode where Col. Potter paints Johnny Holliday & Hawkeye together...or was that the one where Don Baylor and Hot Lips get caught by Maj. Burns? - SR (5/14/07)

The poster who wrote about Mike Golic has reminded all of us just how fragile “fame” really is. The poster wrote “There's a guy named Mike Golich who acts like we are supposed to know him as he endorses one of the sponsors. Some mortgage outfit. Who is that guy???” Golic has been on ESPN TV & radio for a dozen years now, following 9 years as an NFL player + a college career at Notre Dame. Golic has been half of the “Mike & Mike” morning team on ESPN radio since 1999 and is heard on more than 300 radio stations nationwide—and simulcast on ESPN2 television for the past couple years. Most of us would be thrilled to have just a piece of this guy’s career. Captain of the Fighting Irish + a degree in finance from the University of Notre Dame? Multimillionaire? A nationwide radio-TV morning show? Yeah, “Who is that guy!” And we think we’re big stuff if we rack up decent numbers in our own markets… (5/14/07)

Do you know what the deal is with WTWP during Nats rain delays? During Saturday night's delays, they aired a jazz program from XM Radio (Sinatra, Ella, Ellington--the best sounds that station has aired besides Nats games), then they played some obscure European public affairs show and some other things. By the time play resumed the first time, I'm sure they had lost 95 percent of the Nats audience. Advice to WTWP--keep the cool jazz, keep the Nats, lose the other garbage like David Burd and anything to do with classic DC windbag Mark Plotkin. (5/14/07)

Dave's response: Maybe WaPo Radio should have some "Best Of Kornheiser" bits ready to go during Nats' rain delays. Man, I really should charge for my consulting services with all the great ideas I have.....

For those that have watched PTI from the beginning, usually Tony and Mike take some of the summer off, so I think that is the reasoning for Tony to be leaving for MNF in June rather than later. Pre-season football doesn't start till August. Mike in Waldorf (formerly of Arlington) (5/14/07)

Will someone explain why Korny has to leave for his Monday Night Football duties in June? Are they covering the CFL this year as well? Howie (5/14/07)

Dave's response: I believe it's for all the pre-season games.....

Someone said: "There's a guy named Mike Golich who acts like we are supposed to know him as he endorses one of the sponsors. Some mortgage outfit. Who is that guy??? This is better than WBAL???" Mike Golic is one of the hosts of "Mike and Mike In The Morning" on ESPN radio. A former pro football player, most sports fan do know who he is. Dan Patrick, another ESPN host, also does some of those ads. The ads run on 1300AM as well. I don't know if WHFS's coverage is better than WBAL, but a day without a Chip Franklin "Curb Your Intelligence" promo between innings is a good day for me. Howie (5/14/07)

I'm sure most of us have seen the commercial that Channel 9 (and probably others) from an institute that claims to be a "college". They promise a career in law enforcement and make a big deal about the "war on crime" promising a bright future in law enforcement, homeland security, private security, (they are careful not to say police officer). The commercials show a bunch of bright-eyed students sitting around a table with an instructor showing a foldout type book with everyone nodding their heads. Well so what? I have an acquaintance who is not the brightest guy and his expectations in life are jobs such as grocery bagger, cutting grass, and the like. He saw this ad and called and was sent a ton of material followed by a barrage of phone calls begging him to sign up. He asked me to look at the material and if he had enrolled it would have cost him several thousand dollars without an ounce of a guarantee that it would have gotten him a job anywhere besides where he works now and any police department or the government would have laughed at his credentials. Do you wonder if stations like channel 9 care one bit that rip-off "colleges" like this are simply taking advantage of the gullible. (5/14/07)

According to "Who's Who In America", Arthur Windsor Arundel (one-time owner of WAVA Radio) was indeed the son of Russell Moore Arundel (former President of the Pepsi-Cola Co. and "Prince of Princes of the Principality of Outer Baldonia, nee Outer Bald Tusket Island, Nova Scotia"). The elder Arundel (who died in 1978) also is credited for inventing the phrase "doodling" with his 1937 book "Everybody's pixillated: A book of doodles." (And, if anybody cares, WARL became WAVA on January 1st, 1961.) (5/14/07)

I am also not a radio professional, although I play one on TV, and I totally agree with dropping "unzipped" like a used (fill in the blank). RE: "The HD Digital Radio Alliance celebrates a milestone today, as 15 new markets begin broadcasting in HD. This completes the rollout of HD Digital Radio to all of the top 100 markets in under 18 months." Oooooh Wow. Now they have a combined total of 500 people listening to HD. And all after spending 250 million dollars in advertising, and approximately 100 thousand per station for hardware. Great ROI !!!!!! Only a matter of time before management realizes its cheaper to stream, it sounds the same, they can directly control the advertising per demographic, and wireless broadband will give it portability to all major markets..... RE: "“HD Radio is a vision that the industry got behind to benefit the consumer,” said Mark Mays, CEO of Clear Channel Communications." The industry got behind it to benefit the industry. OMYGAWD: Diane Rehm and David Gregory gave commencement speeches earlier today to the graduates of American University. Gregory said this was only his second commencement speech, the other being a high school speech. Diane suggested, that by listening instead of talking, we may become more attentive to the whole person, and by that very engagement, learn more about ourselves. No wonder American University students remain the butt of jokes: here we have President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and others of like protest worthyness by The Left and Good Old AU gets these two losers. I can understand the classic protests of Bush & Cheney given the current climate change, but nobody at AU could muster a protest or two over these Media Clowns being Serious Speakers at their commencement?... Dan asked about popups at Washington Times website. I have not encountered that at their site, but as a IT pro, usually I find that a system has undetected spyware of some sort that is causing it. Try using a good quality scanner like D
