Damn shame to read of the passing of Ellen Kingsley. We need to keep her family in our prayers and thoughts. I remember watching her reports on nine about the passing of legendary WJZ-TV anchor Jerry Turner, which occurred after her own cancer diagnosis as I recall. Ms. Kingsley got her start in the 'biz with that legendary anchor team on Television Hill. Back in the era that Ms. Kingsley found that she had cancer, it took a great deal of courage for an air personality to admit that they had cancer, let alone something as "embarrassing" as breast cancer was back then. Pity we’ve lost so many in this biz to cancer. In addition to Jerry Turner, we can’t forget Walt Starling and Liz Bartch (WDCA-TV’s CE who was an expert in making 220KW TPO UHF rigs work reliably! She cut her teeth on the R! CA rig at WTAF-29 when she was Taft’s CE there, before Taft sent her to WDCA to tame the Gates BT-220U on River Road…) immediately come to mind, I guess I’m getting old. Losing too many old friends to cancer really starts to hurt once you get past fifty, I guess… (3/8/07)

My favorite radio hottie is "Meg" from the syndicated Greg Knap show. I dont know her last name, but she's visible on webcam images in the show's chat room. I like when she gives Greg crap because of his opinions. (3/8/07)

Albie Dee!!! I was wondering where you were, the ratings were out yesterday...Hey, miss lead is spelled mislead...and JT`s song goes: What GOES around, COMES around. Don`t you guys play it at XM superduper hit channel whatever. Tata. (3/8/07)

At 5:49 pm channel 4 ran a story by liz crenshaw about calling your credit card company to see if they'd lower the interest rate. Saw this same story on channel 4 a few weeks back. What gives?...Over at channel 9 at about 6:13pm they had an in studio shtick were ms. neale asks some prettyboy chiropractor weight loss questions e-mailed in by the viewers, oh and the slickee boy chiro just happens to have a diet book for sale (have seen this same chiro hawking his diet book on an infomercial on channel 36 cox cable system) so did the chiro pay channel 9 for this segment?... it's all sh8t these days ain't it...... and then the changes here... did you consider making the site a pay for instead..... is everything jumping the shark these days.. actually i think it happened long ago... (3/8/07)

You mean to say Those fine upstanding folks at Clear Channel DC miss lead people? Can't be. Booger would never do that.....Right Booger? J.T. has got it right, "What Comes Around....Goes Around" (3/8/07)

Don't want to jump to conclusions, but just turned on FOX5 5pm news and who do I see but Maureen Umeh doing a broadcast from L.A. for the American Idol broadcast..HMMMM..Isn't that Holly Morris' gig?..Now, maybe she's on vacation, on another gig, but kinda odd that she's not out there..Just wondering. (3/8/07)

Back in the day 1968 to 1971 I was the voice of Bud's Creek Drag-o-way. The strip was owned by Bill Cairnes..What a great time...(" Attention Drag-race fans EVERYWHERE!!!!) AT that time I was running a 1968 "Vette" (pretty quick too!) I now own and occasionally race a 1971 RoadRunner-I've owned it since early 1971. (3/8/07)

(Dave -- take a look down the list of Headliner Awards whose link youposted today. You'll note the rare, if not unprecedentedmother/daughter appearances in the lineup of winners; Daughter TishaThompson of WBAL, Balto., and mother Lea Thompson, formerly ofDateline.") That's RIGHT! AND, Daughter and wife of Montgomery County Judge Durke Thompson, the creep who let a wife-beater walk a few years ago after saying, on the bench, in open court, "Well, some women NEED to be slapped around a little sometimes." What a classy family they must be. Is theirs the only trailer in Potomac? - Meg (3/8/07)

Tisha Thompson doesn't work for WBAL... I think you mean WMAR. Mark (3/8/07)

Dave's response: The blurb has been corrected.....

Dave, a "Notable Quotable" for you. Today, today right after Mike O'Meara got a call from his gay son, Don Geronimo responded to a caller who wondered how many partners a typical guy has by the time he turns 40. He said, "The average guy has slept with 25 guys, errrr, girls." The truth comes "out"! - Toby in Rockville (3/8/07)

Brown said, "Yeah, they lied." Who to believe? A thug that beats his wife and doesn’t pay child support – or the white collar thugs at Clear Channel… (3/8/07)

Drag racing commercials are fondly remembered by many who were fortunate enough to be around during the golden age of Top 40 radio, when drag racing wasn't limited to just a few NHRA or IHRA events per year. Every drag strip across America had Top Fuel or Funny Car shows and Top 40 stations screamed out the trademark screamer spots to let everybody know. I had the great pleasure to puke out many of those spots myself for the now defunct American Hot Rod Association and for some independent tracks all over the country during the 70's and 80's. I always thought a good drag race spot has to have a lot of "n's" in SUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNDAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!! Bob, the former drag race announcer, in Sunny Tampa (3/8/07)

Hi, Well, every once in a while I bug you with a shameless promotion or two. So, here comes another :-) The Today Show is doing a taped segment about me, Don LaFontaine, George DelHoyo and Mark Elliot tomorrow morning. I haven't seen the piece, but I think it will be fun. If you have a chance check it out or Tivo it. Today Show - NBC, Friday, March 9, Sometime between 8:45am and 9:30am... Thanks :-) Joe Cipriano www.joecipriano.com (3/8/07)

What I remember about that heavily-reverb’d ad was the shrill “RACE FANS! HOT RODDERS!” at the open…….Why do I suddenly have a craving for a luke warm PBR? Dave in Sterling (3/8/07)

RE: "...the Capitol Raceway mentioned..." I seem to remember, "Saturday, Saturday, Saturday night under the lights at Capitol Raceway", with the tune, "Rat Race" as its bed. Someone shoot me now... (3/8/07)

(In response to: I’ve been an out-of-towner for quite a while now so forgive me for asking. But the Capitol Raceway mentioned below couldn’t be the same place whose “Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!! commercials permeated the airwaves of the DC and Baltimore top 40 stations in the 60s and 70’s. Or could it?) The answer is yes. When I moved to the Baltimore Area in 1977, I remember hearing those commercials on the radio for Capitol Raceway on WCAO and WPGC. Being a former Kansas City resident, they ran the same type of commercials for the local raceway out there, which was in a suburban town, which I don't remember. The name of the raceway was I-70 Speedway. Ed Jones, Bel Air MD (3/8/07)

Regarding a previous post - Dave's response: It's etched in stone above the main entrance to the Washington Post building on 15th Street: "IT'S NOT NEWS UNTIL WE REPORT IT"..... I happen to like a line that I think may have been from a movie, “If it’s news to you, it’s news to us!” (3/8/07)

Golly, I sure hope Christy King keeps delivering those updates on the cherry blossoms. I don’t know which is less valuable: the constant reminders that trees bloom every spring or her childish delivery. What a ‘tard! News Value: Zero; Yuck Value: 8. (3/8/07)

I’ve been an out-of-towner for quite a while now so forgive me for asking. But the Capitol Raceway mentioned below couldn’t be the same place whose “Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!! commercials permeated the airwaves of the DC and Baltimore top 40 stations in the 60s and 70’s. Or could it? (3/8/07)

Dave's response: I remember in my youth in the Philadelphia area listening to George Michael on WFIL, Famous 56, and those "Sunday Sunday Sunday" ads for the Atco Dragway in the Jersey pine barrens. My dad wouldn't take me.....

What's happened to Ron & Fez on XM? I know Fezzy was unhappy and planned to leave but did he just call in and say that's it, I'm gone? Yesterday I saw it was Worst of Opie and Anthony during the R & F show... just curious, and sad for Ron. (3/8/07)

I'm glad I'm not the only person disturbed by the fact that the WaPo is actually paying Kornheiser for the page 2 column. It's like the sports equivalent of Larry King's USA Today column where he wrote such gems as, "Those plastic tips on your shoelaces are called aglets... The Amish make fine houses... Yay for lazy Sunday mornings... Russian women will go down on you for a pair of jeans..." (3/8/07)

Dave's response: And what's the deal with the Washington Post hyping in the print edition that it has a series, "Citizen K Street," that's available only on its website for free. Granted, there's some stuff that you can't do in the dead tree edition - like chats and blogs. But what's the Post trying to do? Punish the poor slobs who pay good money for the print edition? No wonder the Post is seeing more and more paying subscribers saying adios, baby. Whacked marketing if you ask me.....

Hi, So I get my Washington Spaces Magazine in the mail, and guess who's got a big spread (and house)? The Weekend Anchor over at FOX 5. They do a whole thing on Will Thomas and his house and paints, etc. It's somewhere in Northwest. I went to washingtonspaces.com and if you click on sneek peek there are several pics there too. Wonder if he'd help me with my apartment! :) (3/8/07)

To: Mike Parris, 3+ sec. 60 foot time??? Don’t know which video you saw but, although nothing to write home about, my worst 60 foot time this past Sunday was 2.809 sec. (my first run) and my best was 2.445… takes a while to master all that added Tercel power… Al (super stock) Santos – Ha-Ha-Ha! (3/8/07)

The news about a Geico cavemen sitcom pilot was reported by Variety last week. The Post is just reporting on this today like it's a brand new story. Everett W. (3/8/07)

Dave's response: It's etched in stone above the main entrance to the Washington Post building on 15th Street: "IT'S NOT NEWS UNTIL WE REPORT IT".....

was I just not paying attention or was there not wtop traffic this am between 8 AM and 8:30 AM? (3/8/07)

So i was driving past 1801 rockville pike....and all i can do is laugh! Love the ratings! (3/8/07)

Dave's response: Hey, how 'bout that WBIG! The dullest rock station on the planet.....

Count me in as one of those Sirius listeners who DOES listen to Howard all day. I listen from 6 to 11, and then the wrap-up show from 11-noon, and then the 15 mins of news at noon, then the start of the show again (in case I wasn’t up right at 6). From 1 pm-3pm I switch to Lynn Samuels (Sirius Left) ---hilarious 63 y.o. new yawker foul-mouthed libertarian broad---and then I check in the on the first hour of DnM. If doni is talking about his day or behind the scenes radio stuff, or howling about things on THIS site, I’ll stay. As soon as they start the regular show I bail. Problem there is that Don’s a lame duck, just riding out his contract until his ’08 solo move to satellite, so maybe he’s saving up his good bits for then. So by 4 p.m. on back with Howard, listening in my car on my way to shopping, dinner, then it’s a night of tv, but after the Daily Show and Colbert, Howard goes back on while I slumber so I’m ready to wake up to the dulcet tones of his opening song. Unless someone good is on Coast to Coast---then I’ll check in on that. Back in the day I was a 2 to 7 Don and Mike fiend. Now 3-4 is about all I can take. I do miss hearing Buzz’s news. (3/8/07)

Here we go again... Tribune now announces it's keeping The Baltimore Sun... www.baltimoresun.com (3/8/07)

To my fellow "Oldies" fans, I know that you remember ? and the Mysterians. I recall seeing them for the first time on WJZ during the days of "Where the Action Is". They recorded for the Cameo-Parkway label and "96 Tears" was their signature song. While doing research for my program, I discovered that ? recently lost his house in a tragic fire that claimed the lives of his precious dogs including Tiffany, his Yorkshire Terrier, who survived the fire, but died later. He also lost most of his memorabilia as well. Log onto the 96tears.com website to find out more and if you would like to lend your support. Unfortunately, ? didn't have insurance and several musicians in the Michigan area are lending their support in a concert. To Ed Graham, Jack Gale, Johnny Dark, Bob Mathers, Jack Edwards, and "Hitman" or I should say vintage, wonderful old ***art broadcasters, have you worked with ? and the Mysterians. Love to hear some stories. Blessings. Joyce Conroy (WHFC/WYTI). (3/8/07)

RE: "Can someone give me the on air personality lineup at WXCY in Havre De Grace, MD?" Greg, the line-up includes... Paula and Mike in the Morning, Nancy Johnson, Dave Hovel (PD), Chris Duff (formerly at WAMD, and B 101.7/95.3 in Salisbury), and Lia. (3/8/07)

What is this piece of daily fluff garbage we're seeing at the top of page 2 in the Post sports? Is this column to fulfill contractual obligations? Or is it cross-promotion for his radio show? Or is it a ploy to get us to read the ads on WashPost.com? Or all of the above? Whatever it is, it's unexciting and not worth my time to read. Today TK makes a reference to Hamlet and then proceeds to explain it. Well, if he needs to explain it, he doesn't need to write it in the first place. Does he think we're all a bunch of dumb shits? Also why is the Post using a photo of him that's at least 10 years old? And we get to see it in two places! Regards Biff (3/8/07)

Dave's response: Nothing personal against Tony, but how many wealthy, pompous, middle-aged, self-centered, loud mouth white guys (who are really oh so insecure down deep) do we need on the radio? Sheesh.....

(Dave's response: Now that would be a funny ad. Having the Geico caveman and his Charm City-accented Neanderthal friends in his 1970s deco pad watching the O's and Nats' games on a beat up old B&W television. Downing cans of National Bo.....) ABC is actually developing a pilot called "Cavemen" which will be based on the Geico ads, according to today's Post. Did you call LA after typing the above response, Dave? (3/8/07)

Go big AL! I was looking forward for my first run at Capitol raceway Sunday. But my car is still in pieces from the winter modifications. I was watching some of your videos, I had a good chuckle at that 3 plus second 60 foot time and your reaction to it. Mike Parris (3/8/07)

Dave's response: We had a little mix-up in communications from Al. Actually, his run at Capitol Raceway was last Sunday. The Front Page newsblurb has been updated. This Sunday, Al will be drag racing on Jenifer Street, in front of the WJZW studios.....

The reason Don & Mike's ratings aren't rebounding is because their show sucks. John in Stafford (3/8/07)

Can someone give me the on air personality lineup at WXCY in Havre De Grace, MD? Greg (3/8/07)

"ALSO for the Record, I would pay her $25000 to SPANK ME! (If I HAD it!)" I believe I would bestow that honor on Meg Oliver, the anchor on CBS's "Up to the Minute" in the wee hours of the morning. You gotta stay up pretty late or get up pretty early to catch her, but it's worth it. -DB (3/8/07)

[Here's the reason Don and Mike's ratings aren't rebounding: Howard Stern repeats all day, so former 106.7 and 105.7 listeners who listened to Stern in the morning and D&M in the afternoon can now just continue listening to Sirius on the way home.] Uhh, no. Listening to the entire West Coast feed from 9 to 3 is enough Stern, I don't need to hear it twice. The reason the WJFK's rating suck is that the rolling average includes all of Don's sabbatical. (3/7/07)

RE:What's up with WHFS in Baltimore?, Can the Orioles and Kirk/Mark save it? Simple Answer is NO! WHFS being the only station in that baltimore cluster that demands daily attention from management is going to stay down because the 2 nim-wits that run that station don't know how to get ratings but they do know how to make money and that they will, because now-a-days numbers are not as important as image. Looking from the outside KMS, Ed Norris, D&M, Theoharris, Terps and Orioles, and the calls "HFS" is an easy to sell regardless of numbers. (3/7/07)

Sorry to report that no "Wing Ding" shows still exist, be they hosted by Kirby Scott, Bill Miller or Jack Alix. There was never any real need to record them, other than when they were doing a show in advance. Pity, really. (3/7/07)

"To the "Mailbagger" with the unkind words to Lisa Baden: Opinions are like assholes! I've always found Ms. Basen to be a fresh breath of life in an otherwise dull gig (Besides she's easy on the eyes!)." So what you're saying then is your opinion really isn't worth a shit either. (3/7/07)

I don't know if you caught the 98Crock Radio commercial on WBAL-TV in the 6 O'Clock hour, but it was soooooooo B A D - It made me feel sorry for the City, the Station and the morons on the commercial....Hey WMDT & WBOC you guys have been topped with this spot - there is no way you could do a worse commercial, but I know you'll try - Observation from the Lower Slower Eastern Shore J.J. "Hitman" McKay (3/7/07)

What's up with WHFS in Baltimore? Or, rather, what's down! According to the latest Arbitron numbers, it's gone from a 3.6 to a 1.2 in about a year. Can the Orioles and Kirk/Mark save it? (3/7/07)

RE:"Could somebody please explain to me what this means?: "I'm like, "N8gga, please." N8gga Please was a critical and commercial success, and remains one of the most popular solo albums in the Wu-Tang Clan's discography. Credit Russell Tyrone Jones, aka ODB (3/7/07)

(snip) All of YOU are a bunch of "lefties"! (snip) Not that there's anything wrong with that... (3/7/07)

To the Lisa Baden "hata' " - um dude - how old are you? Obviously a child - Lisa Baden works her happy ass off each and every morning. Given the choice of Ms. Baden and the chick on Fox 5 - can't we all just pitch in and get her a date so she leaves Tony Perkins alone?? - my vote will go for Lisa Baden. And this isn't a bust on Julie Wright, I simply find her annoying ... more so than entertaining. And if I may, I'll quote you, "I'm like "N8GGA PLEASE" - was she like really gnarly and like really bothersome? So you got a new job that allows you to stay home in the morning; it begs the question, "Was collecting recyclables really that taxing of a gig that you had to switch?" And a major shout out to Cerphe who is obviously loving the new format at 94-7 !!! Kristen (3/7/07)

Dave's response: Although Schelby sounds like she's been sedated. A Ramones reference. Nevermind.....

("Do I see WMAL on the rebound from the basement in today's ratings? Care to postulate as to why?" - "Dave's response: Two words - 'Bryan' and 'Nehman'.....") Maybe, but not likely. The two words that most obviously explain an uptick at WMAL are "Democratic control" [of Congress, of course]. While Republican bashers talk about how the GOP can't figure out a message, I expect to see across-the-board increases for the station's programming. I'd expect the same thing at WTNT if history didn't tell me that 570 AM will never place higher than 21st in any book. Christian (3/7/07)

Dave's response: I was just joking.....

Chris Miller makes his CSN debut -- TONIGHT @ 6:30 & 10! (3/7/07)

Could somebody please explain to me what this means?: "I'm like, "N8gga, please." (3/7/07)

"For the record, Kiran Chetry is a graduate of Eastern MS and MontgomeryBlair's Communication Arts Program and the University of Maryland." - ALSO for the Record, I would pay her $25000 to SPANK ME! (If I HAD it!) BWA-HAH-HAH-HAH (3/7/07)

Here's the reason Don and Mike's ratings aren't rebounding: Howard Stern repeats all day, so former 106.7 and 105.7 listeners who listened to Stern in the morning and D&M in the afternoon can now just continue listening to Sirius on the way home. I was a D&M listener up until January 2006, and I figure there are many more who have made the same decision for the same reason. (3/7/07)

All of YOU are a bunch of "lefties"! (3/7/07)

What a joke WTOP's switch between TWC and WJLA's forecasts have been. At 2:28pm today some weather reader from WJLA was still reading the morning forecast which was "winter weather advisory with 1 to 3 inches". There is no place that I have been today which includes Frederick County, Loudoun County, and Montgomery County that even approaches one inch of snow in fact there is no snow anywhere besides the trees. The NWS changed the forecast before 10 am this morning. (3/7/07)

Kudos to WTNT this morning for re-airing a Glenn Beck show from last week. Someone mis-label the tapes "Tuesday" over there or what? And what's more, how is it a listener catches something like this, but the person running the board, the Program Director, or someone else in management doesn't? That station should just go away. (3/7/07)

To the "Mailbagger" with the unkind words to Lisa Baden: Opinions are like assholes! I've always found Ms. Basen to be a fresh breath of life in an otherwise dull gig (Besides she's easy on the eyes!). Rusty Gibson (3/7/07)

"WHUR & WTOP Top Radio Ratings" I hope there are enough life jackets on the good ship WJFK! There's not much of it left above water. (3/7/07)

Glassman report & comments are... actually not correct as they miss the point: "I have to quibble with your headline, "Former Postie To Head VOA" Actually, as your item correctly notes, Glassman is tipped to head the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees VOA et al." Jim Glassman is a syndicated columnist whose column has run in The Washington Compost (my late father was a columnist whose column ran there too, but would have cringed at being called a "Postie") but is not a "Postie" -- even if he has been banging one of their reporters (female, at least) for years. (3/7/07)

Wow, those look like terrible ratings for D&M. What about Tony K? How did he do in the ratings? (3/7/07)

Dave's response: A DC radio guru tells us that the rolling average Arbitron number includes the period from 1/11 to 2/7, averaged in with the last two months of the fall book. Tony didn't start until 2/20.....

Nehman - Is there that much of him on the air that he can save the station? I don't have to drive to work these days. So, I'm not listening in my car. Tell me why I'd want to switch away from WTOP and go to WMAL on my kitchen radio. (3/7/07)

re: "I want Doug Hill on record telling me EXACTLY down to the milimeter just how much snow will fall at my house and how much I have to shovel off the entire length of my driveway. And then I want him to tell me EXACTLY how much snow will build up in even the smallest of drifts in my lawn. And then I want him to tell me EXACTLY how deep the piles of snow will be when the snow plow passes by the end of my driveway. And if he gets it wrong for my specific house, in my specific neighborhood, in my specific county, he should be fired. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?!? Get a friggin' life!" ...And that's the whole point (idiot). A lot of us who have "lives" that require being out in any and all weather conditions and depend on knowing about the magnitude of these storms. Other local DC radio and tv forecasters seem to "get it." (3/7/07)

I have to quibble with your headline, "Former Postie To Head VOA" Actually, as your item correctly notes, Glassman is tipped to head the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees VOA et al. The recently-named director of the VOA is Dan Austin, a former Dow Jones/WSJ executive. Regards Art (3/7/07)

Do I see WMAL on the rebound from the basement in today's ratings? Care to postulate as to why? (3/7/07)

I watched Channel 4 sports last night and was just amazed. Highlights without the scoreboard removed, like every other Channel. Seemed like they were close to full speed.. Lindsey Czarniak I think is a future star. Major kudos to them. (3/7/07)

On the subject of Lisa Baden, I don’t know her personally but I know if I had to get up at some god-awful hour to report on the crap-ass D.C. traffic I’d have to be a bit loopy just so I don’t snap, grab my case and head for the nearest bell tower laughing manically all the way! (3/7/07)

I want Doug Hill on record telling me EXACTLY down to the milimeter just how much snow will fall at my house and how much I have to shovel off the entire length of my driveway. I have seen Lisa Baden's name mentioned in the mailbag many times, but never really bothered to read. I have switched jobs for the first time in a while and I watch traffic reports. All I have to say is Lisa Baden is one corny ass bitch. I laughed today because they kept wishing this old broad "Happy Birthday", like the old bag of bones really wants to be reminded about her age. She screeched how "preeeeetttyyyyyy" the snow was this morning. I'm like, "N8gga, please." And she is always dancing in her chair looking really stupid. And speaking of dancing, the Dancing With the Stars thing they did this morning with the two broads and the one dude dressed up as a star dancing was HORRIBLE. LOL. What a wreck. HA! (3/7/07)

Was wondering if anyone out there knew how I could get copies of "Wing Ding", a dance show on the same lines as American Bandstand, that was broadcast on the old Channel 20. What a hoot that would be for my sister's 55th birthday! (3/7/07)

If MASN airs an ad for baseball games you cannot see on a channel you cannot see, has MASN aired an ad at all? Charles in Winchester (Go VCU). (3/7/07)

If anyone knows how to reach former WWRC All-News 98 reporter Rudy Brewington, please pass it along here as soon as you can. (3/7/07)

Boy...someone sent me some numbers from the trend out in Baltimore. D&M who? Persons 12+ 1.2 (19th)... Persons 18-34 1.3 (16th)... Men 18+ 1.8 (13th)... It's become irrelavent. (3/7/07)

Al Kamen's "In the Loop" column in today's Washington Post leaks the new head of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the organization overseeing U.S. government funded civilian international broadcasting, notably DC-based Voice of America. Kamen doesn't mention that the current chairman is Kenneth Y. Tomlinson, who was forced out as head of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting amid charges of injecting (conservative) political bias into programming. Tomlinson, a former director of VOA in the 1980s and a close friend of Karl Rove, was cited in an inspector general report last year for misusing his BBG office, in part by conducting some of his horse breeding business on government time. ### Link to Kamen www.washingtonpost.com Relevant part of Kamen column ... "Moving On . . . James Glassman, television pundit, American Enterprise Institute scholar, former editor of Roll Call, former Washington Post columnist and author of books including our favorite -- "Dow 36,000: The New Strategy for Profiting From the Coming Rise in the Stock Market" -- is said to be getting the job of chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, a part-time -- but time-consuming -- gig overseeing the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia, the Middle East Broadcasting Networks and the Cuba broadcasting operation." (3/7/07)

I haven't been a big fan of WTOP's (ABC7) Doug Hill this winter for a lot of reasons. For our previous two snowfalls, he's avoided predicting specific anticipated snowfall accumulations. And, his long range winter forecast for this season has turned out to be a complete debacle ("colder than normal with much higher than normal snow accumulations"). However, for our current winter storm he has gone on record with a specific accumulation prediction -- a welcome development. While it remains to be seen if he's wrong for this storm, I give him credit for having the "cahones" this time to step up to the plate like a Big-Weather-Boy. (3/7/07)

I'd like to personally thank local TV stations, esp NBC4, for discussing feces and urine while I'm eating my dinner. Regards Biff (3/7/07)

Dave's response: While searching for snow shit this morning, I stumbled upon Jack Diamond doing "Idol chat" on Fox 5 "news." Local television simply can't get any worse.....

(At 10 o'clock Tuesday night, the WJLA Weather Bug reports a forecast of 2-4 inches of snow on Wednesday. The National Weather Service predicts 1 to 1.5 inches. And as of 9pm yesterday, the count of pre-empted ABC network shows is up to 4 in the last two weeks. Why do we need a poor man's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" posing as a one hour infomercial called "Home Team"? A big month for the WJLA sales dept in local ad revenue.) My money's on the NWS vs. Doug Hill's Weather bug. (3/7/07)

Dave's response: Now that would be a funny ad. Having the Geico caveman and his Charm City-accented Neanderthal friends in his 1970s deco pad watching the O's and Nats' games on a beat up old B&W television. Downing cans of National Bo.....

"Did you ever notice on Fox News that female journalists are so good looking and the men are bloated middle aged men like Neil Cavuto or Sean Hannity." I'll still take bloated middle aged men over the cadaverous Alan Colmes. Imus is another who likes like he expired around Thanksgiving but MSNBC just hasn’t gotten around to removing his body from the set. (3/7/07)

Dave's response: Or that John Gibson, who always looks and acts like he just stuck his appendage into an electric socket.....

I have a suggestion for that 20k that Hot parlayed into a good publicity stunt: continue to pay that company that fakes those bits for Kane. Either nobody that reads this site listens to his show or nobody on this site listens to his show. Calling people on the air without their permission? Yeah, Don & Mike never complain about that. D&M, call Kane and get the name of the company. You could be back to faking bits tomorrow! I see it now, D&M's War of the Roses. Oh, and to the poster that said Doni was suspended because of what she said to the suits? No chance. Pugh and company wouldn't allow a public dissenter of their practices come back to work. I would like to start the pool on when Doni's booted though. I put it at less than 30 days. (3/7/07)

RE: "What is going on at WBOC-TV (CBS Affiliate)/FOX 21 on Delmarva? " Money. The answer is as simple as Money. Media on the shore pays SQUAT. People can only take so much of working long days and getting little $$ in return. The UMES gig is a state gig, which means good pay and benefits. As for hard news reporting--that is something the shore lacks. Both stations use alot of fluff, filler or network stories. Yeah, WMDT has some promising talent, but the newscast is a laughing stock--it looks like a high school or college operation. The graphics are horrible, the whole news presentation package is bad, bland and not too advanced. (3/7/07)

At 10 o'clock Tuesday night, the WJLA Weather Bug reports a forecast of 2-4 inches of snow on Wednesday. The National Weather Service predicts 1 to 1.5 inches. Could this be Breaking News from the Storm Center? Booga, booga. (3/7/07)

For the record, Kiran Chetry is a graduate of Eastern MS and Montgomery Blair's Communication Arts Program and the University of Maryland. (3/7/07)

Since poor Robbay’s demotion came with a sharp salary cut---in half, to be precise---no wonder he’s been hospitalized recently for stress-related probs. He’s got two kids and a wife to support, and ain’t one of them kids a godson to uncle doni? For shame, godfather! Rob’s got to be wondering what will happen to him in Sept 2008 when doni spins himself off to satellite (supposing of course the coming merger doesn’t put the kibosh on those plans). Work on Buzz’s radio show? Or wait tables at the place our favorite pudgy impressionist will devote his full time to? (3/7/07)

What is going on at WBOC-TV (CBS Affiliate)/FOX 21 on Delmarva? It seems like the station has made drastic changes with talent and content in the last few years. Last Wednesday was Jason Newton's final day with the station. He had been an anchor on the 6pm, 10pm, and 11pm Newscasts. But all of a sudden a new guy named Don Elkins appears and takes Newton's spot while Newton takes a job with local University UMES. Now Don Elkins is very talented and has a great resume, but why would they push Newton out the door? He definitely did a good job filling the shoes of Steve Summers who resigned from WBOC last year. It really doesn't make sense. They have two stations and 4 newscasts at night, why not keep both of them in the mix with Steve Hammond and Alice Bavis? As far as the content goes, there really isn't a whole lot of hard local news anymore. Just the stuff they have to cover and fluff. Most of the reporters have left in recent months. This isn't the same station that refers to itself as "Delmarva's News Leader." They do still have great talent though. Hammond is the best of the best and the main reason to still watch at 6 and 7pm. Chief Meteorologist Dennis Ketterer and his crew do a great job forecasting, and Paul Butler is solid with sports. Steve Summers is still missed though....WMDT does have some up and coming young talent on it's canvas now too. (3/7/07)

Why do we care so much about riggins show on masn IT'S A FUCKIN RADIO SHOW ON TV!!! listen to it on the radio solid programming there from MASN the regional leader in simulcasting pathetic radio shows, great idea. --- Jim (3/7/07)

Tom, With all due respect, I believe Zeus was the v/o that the PD after Don brought in because the voiceover guy for 96 Rock (95.9 WOSC-Bethany Beach) is David Lee. I think, although I could be wrong that it was Don that kind of got David hooked up with Westwood One to do their football voiceovers...By the way not that its a huge deal but two weeks ago every outcue on 105-7 HFS of the Best of Don and Mike contained FREE-FM 106-7 WJFK. -Michael (3/6/07)

This is local (DC) ...television/radio news? - (Libby Guilty - 3/6 - From the Washington Post: A federal jury today convicted I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby of lying about his role in the leak of an undercover CIA officer's identity, finding the vice president's former chief of staff guilty of two counts of perjury, one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice, while acquitting him of single count of lying to the FBI.) - BTW: Scooter was not convicted of "lying about his role in the leak of an 'undercover' CIA officer's identity", rather, he was convicted by a DC jury -- that usually let's murderers and rapists go free with the highest aquital rate in the country -- for two counts of perjury, one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice. Politics: pure uber-liberal DC politics, that suits Dave's politics just fine. Some "undercover" CIA officer: media.washingtonpost.com (3/6/07)

Ummm... yeah, Dave... that Taco Bell that Kiran Chetry's working for is called CNN! She and some guy were filling in for Anderson Cooper last week on "AC360!" So there! mh (3/6/07)

Dave's response: Great news! There is life after the Wrath Of Roger! Maybe Ailes isn't such a powerful media mogul after all.....

As a matter of fact, Kiran walked right across the street to CNN, where she was immediately hired. (3/6/07)

(...who were the sports anchors at channel 5 in June of 1986? Might sound like a random question but its one of those things that drives you crazy til you find the answer and who better to ask then mr. dcrtv himself) ...Are you thinking of Joe Fowler, perhaps? I remember he was there in the 80's. My brother and I had a beer with him after he did his sports report from Rod Langway's sports bar. Tim in Stafford (3/6/07)

According to Wikipedia, Kiran Chetry is now at CNN. Her busband Chris Knowles is also out at Fox News and yes the new girl last weekend Ainsley something or other is HOT!!!!!!!! What a body. Did you ever notice on Fox News that female journalists are so good looking and the men are bloated middle aged men like Neil Cavuto or Sean Hannity. (3/6/07)

Well I guess today is my lucky day! Just received word from Ira Weintraub, web editor for Red Zebra Broadcasting confirming your report saying they are having some technical issues with MASN. She says the John Riggins show should be up and running in late March, or at the latest, early April. Didn’t know if you cared, but thought I’d pass along the news. On a side note, I thought it was an interesting coincidence that Riggins on MASN will be competing with Washington Post Live on Comcast Sportsnet. Personally, I enjoy having two sports networks in the area, and as it seems their competition will only improve sports programming in the region. It just goes to show you that DC (and I guess you have to include the pathetic city of Baltimore) is a market that can compare with the big leagues of NY, Chi-town, LA and New England. Any news on if MASN plans on producing a news show, such as Comcast’s SportsNite/SportsRise? (3/6/07)

Dave's response: For the record, Ira is a he - not a she.....

re: "Does anyone know where Kiran Chetry of the weekend morning show on Fox News Channel has been?" Kiran got passed over for the morning gig that Gretchen Carlson got. Amongst all the maneuvering I believe Chetry tried to use an offer from CNN as leverage for the weekday morning gig. FOX said we don't play that game (with you) and see yah. (3/6/07)

Dave, some of us that support DCRTV monthly would like to know when we'll be able to access all the :"new stuff"/ We're looking forward to the revised photo sections! (3/6/07)

Dave's response: If you're a monthly contributor to DCRTV or have given us at least $50 this year, just let me know and you'll get immediate access to DCRTV Plus. Make at least a $5 donation this week and get access to DCRTV Plus through the end of March. A $50 donation will get you access for a full year. Via our Support page.....

Does anyone know where Kiran Chetry of the weekend morning show on Fox News Channel has been? They've had some dumb blonde in there who only knows how to nod her head at everything her news partners say. But... she does look fucking good! And can anyone believe that Gretchen Carlson was actually Miss America? She is cute, but not Miss America cute by any chance. Imagine Kiran Chetry & Paige Hopkins posing for Playboy!!! (3/6/07)

Dave's response: I seem to recall reading that Kiran got on the wrong side of Fox News Czar Roger Ailes. Look for her to be working the drive-up window at a Taco Bell real soon.....

It's old movie time again over at WJLA! Today's moldy 1980s flick is "The Karate Kid II" Those of you who wanted to see Arena Football (admittedly not a big audience, it is more of a principal thing) - tough shit. Someone please buy this station from the third-rate owners that currently operate it. This type of crap is more in line with a small UHF station in Iowa than Washington DC. (3/6/07)

Don’t know if you put up that post because of my e-mail, but thanks! I’ve tried e-mailing everyone, Washington Post, Triple-X ESPN radio, MASN, John Riggins show and no one even bothered to write back. Really shows how much they care. Like I said don’t know if you put the post in response to my e-mail, but I’ll just think you did. Thanks! (3/6/07)

What does Libby's conviction have to do with DC R or TV? (3/6/07)

I will bet Don and Mike spend at least an hour talking about the weather today. Great radio, huh? (3/6/07)

To quote from the joint Comcast/Sinclair press release issued at the time, "Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) and Sinclair Broadcast Group (NASDAQ: SBGI) today announced that they are continuing to have productive discussions and have agreed to extend the retransmission agreement that was set to expire today through March 10." If I'm interpreting that correctly, the only game airing that would be endangered on Baltimore market Comcast systems would be the ACC championship game itself on March 11. Dave, As you may or may not know, I do a regularly weekly gig on Wash Post Radio with David Burd and Jessica Doyle to talk about the Q&A Cafe. It happens Tuesday mornings. Anway, today after the show I took this pic of them. Maybe your readers would like to see this newest radio anchor "marriage" in the flesh. Besides, it's a cute pic. Jessica wanted to pose by a Beethoven poster, but Dave opted for the thermostat, because he's so hot. Feel free to use. - Carol (3/6/07)

Steve Doocy: "It was evident to everyone that she was joking..." Give it up, Steve. Michael Richards tried that defense too. Went over like a poop sandwich. (3/6/07)

I don't keep up with the Sunday-morning gabfests, but I know enough to suspect a relatively simple explanation for the disappearance of "Politico" reporters from "Face the Nation": pressure from Big Media. You don't set out as a direct competitor to the Big Newspapers, stealing away some of their top talent, and then get to cozy up to the political shows on which the remaining Big Media reporters have appeared for years. There's too much bad blood, I suspect. And when confronted with an ulitimatum from the Ben Bradlees of the media world, "Face the Nation" probably goes with the Bradlees, not Jim Vandeheis. Just a thought. Christian (3/6/07)

Quite entertaining this morning to watch the shills on Faux News attempt to excuse Anne Coulter's homophobic diatribe on John Edwards. Steve Doocy: "It was evident to everyone that she was joking..." Of course it was, Steve. When she starts in on Obama later on with black jokes, I guess that'll be okay with you as well. I think this person (Coulter) is very likely mentally ill, and should be handled the same as other troubled soul, like say, Britney Spears. (3/6/07)

Things have been pretty quiet on the whole Sinclair-Comcast issue. Has anyone else noticed that the new deadline to yank the stations from Comcast is on a Saturday? This is a much easier day to remove a channel where people may not be as likely to complain, nor would they be able to call the offices of Sinclair or Comcast to do so. This Saturday is March 10th, American Idol will not be on, 24 will not be on, The Simpsons will not be on. It would be much easier to rip the Fox & CW affiliates from us over a weekend than on a Thursday when "Idol" was on like the original deadline...just a thought. Greg in Reisterstown (3/6/07)

To "Rob in Falls Church": I believe the sports anchors on WTTG in the era that you referenced was"Smokin'" Al Koken. and/or Steve Buckhantz. Jim Karvelas was long gone by then. Hope that helps. Rusty Gibson (3/6/07)

Dave's response: What about Bernie Smilovitz?

Dave - Correct me if I am wrong but if Comcast and Sinclair can't get the deal done on March 9th then Maryland Terp basketball fans could miss their team playing in the ACC Tournament who will be on CW54. The games are set to start on Thursday and runs through Sunday. www.examiner.com... Cheers, Jim Williams (3/6/07)

Dave's response: Would you believe, I'm not sure. When was Jim Karvellas (who recently passed away) there? When did Brett Haber start at 5? Anybody know?

I too had the pleasure of working with Wayne Hetrick. One of the dryest senses of humor I ever ran across. Upon my arrival at WPGC in 1968 he was working in main studio and I was on the board, it was my first week there. Bob Howard the General Manager was calling every 10 minute trying his best to intimidate me, and succeeding to some extent. About three seconds before the "hot line' would light up..Wayne would quetly mumble.."ring, ring"...then he'd look at me and smile. Finally one night he said..hang up on him, he needs to know you're not affected by his harrassment. To make a long story short..I did...I was with the station for another four years..Loved him like a brother...PLB/DJ (3/6/07)

(RE: Politicos Vanish From "Face") Dave, Nice theory, but it doesn't make any sense. How could the Politico guys even strike a deal with CBS in the first place if the ABC TV stations were a factor? The Politico guys have been off Face just because of scheduling (I checked) they have done a ton of hits on CBS Radio Net over the past few days. Politico guys told me that their deal with CBS allows them to do all the local TV and cable they want. The "This Week" move was known to CBS before the Politico deal was struck. (3/6/07)

Three things. I notice the Silence of the Scammed. No apologists now for Sirius and Stern? I told you the numbers didn't makes sense. You didn't beleive me. Now MSN has a nice little article that says it all.. "Stern gets a half-billion dollars. The investors get nothing". Second, INSIDER TRADING ALERT,,,does anyone find it funny that Mel pushes XM into a public foray of a merger, citing their mutual losses, and then, a mere two days after this 'merger of losers' is made public, we have a PR that says XM's losses have shrunk, unlike Sirius. Now, knowing how data acq., analysis and PR work, that is information that XM had, and probably shared with Sirius prior to either announcement. So Mel, the corrupt bastard that he is, knew damn well when announcing the merger that only Sirius was in trouble, not XM. XM of course had to play ball since they most likely, and unwittingly perhaps, shared information with Sirius, not expecting it to be used publicly as it was, and for which they might now be liable. So Mel gets to prop up Sirius and browbeat XM using information not available to investors. The SEC needs to investigate the timing of the info, the PR and the stock prices. This things smells of Insider Trading. The Sirius board and investors need to kick Howie and Mel to the curb, or perhaps federal prison. Third. I suspect the music industry has come to realize the dollars they can make over the Internet from Itunes, and thus they don't need Internet radio any longer...thus we have the royalty decision. (3/6/07)

RE: "There has got to be a middle ground for internet radio. Artists deserve money but is it in the artists best interest to kill off internet radio??" No it's not in the best interest of the artist. However all the other folks (record company's) are sure to benefit if there is tighter controls on what comes out and what doesn't. With Wi-Max just around the corner a small indie internet radio would stand to raise its "Hits" exponentially. This is a way to squash competition not garner revenue for the artists. (3/6/07)

This morning I was listening to the 8:05 WFMD news report with Dianah Gibson. First thing I heard was, "WFMD News time, 5:05." I knew that WFMD had been rerunning more newscasts throughout the day, as well as the :17 and :47 updates, but now it seems that the actual morning newscasts are being recycled. Why? And do other stations do this? It would never happen at WBAL. Ah, the latest from "Frederick's News Station." (3/6/07)

Oh boy -- a chance of late winter snow on Wednesday of this week in metro Washington, D.C. -- and another entertaining chance to see how WTOP's Doug Hill and the ABC Snow (job) Machine reacts. The WJLA "Chief Meteorologist" has actually predicted a "possible accumulation" (as of 11pm on Monday on WT-Opie). Wow, going out on the limb. Will Doug (and the team) actually commit to an accumulation figure -- in light of the competition having already weighed in with a specific estimate? Or, will Doug Hill just predictably choke once again (hoping we didn't see/hear it) proving that his career has indeed jumped the shark? Stay tuned. (3/6/07)

Snow in the forecast? I guess that means "Topper Short" on D&M. That show has become as predictible as farting after eating a beany burrito. (3/6/07)

Wayne Hetrich spent many years at National Public Radio, from its beginning in 1971. We fondly called him "Mr. Wizard" because he was an amateur magician and he could whip up new circuits to do the things we needed to do. He was the father of the first NPR satellite transmission system, where he was able to squeeze 10 pounds of carriers into a 5 pound transponder. He was a patent holder and a member of the Audio Engineering Society. It was an honor and a privilege to work with him. R.I.P., Wiz. Ed Jones, Columbia, MD (3/5/07)

What effect does the Copyright Royalty Board's decision have on WEBR? Could this spell the end of the Tom Gavin radio show? Also what effect does this have on internet broadcasts of the tired old land based radio station's? It does make one wonder what the record companies and musicians are thinking? I mentioned to an artist playing at Jammin' Java the other night how I'm an old fart and I'm pretty clueless about a good 75% of the acts they book at the club. I'm use to the idear of being exposed to new music by the radio but I guess it hasn't been that way for year's now. So I presume one of the few ways new acts can get known these days is over the internet. Now I guess most musical outlets on internet get shut down. Won't that pretty much put a time clock on the music industry in the U.S........While posting this I've been listening to that gawdawful show on WJFK after 7 pm. That voice and I don't mean the munchkin sounding dude but the roseannadana sounding one. I think I'd end up sticking knitting needles in my eyes if I keep listening to this dreck. (3/5/07)

Jim Weiskopf - late of WMET and Red Zebra - appears to have recently touched down at WJFK as their Director of Business Development. I just noticed his name on the station website. Good for him; as a fellow WMET'er who also got futt-bucked by the parent company during it's big ramp-up, I am very happy to see he's got a solid gig. Congrats, Jim. (3/5/07)

There has got to be a middle ground for internet radio. Artists deserve money but is it in the artists best interest to kill off internet radio?? (3/5/07)

No, it's true. Robb Spewack and John Norman really do hate each other. Did anyone hear how unconcerned , almost joyfull, John was on the show when Robb was hospitalized a few weeks ago for that alleged heart aliments. (3/5/07)

With the news that D&M have hired a new producer, it would seem that this may be a desperate move to try and stop the show from being cancelled. The ratings are way down and that stunt last year seems to have cost them thousands of listeners. Do you think the show will last until June? Keep up the good work. Thanks. Jason Whitlock (3/5/07)

Dave, Thanks for the mention! FYI, I'll still be doing both broadcasting as well as real estate. With the internet, it's entirely possible to do both. until last april i worked at wrc/nbc news in washington for 17 years. part of that time i worked for george michael. your article about jealous employees being glad of his departure is rather appaling. the george michael sports machine generated a tremendous amount of revenue for the station. many times the sales department was asking for more shows, more inventory and more sponsorships to sell. sports sells in washington, d.c. especially with a big name talent like george michael. the satellite dishes on the roof of wrc were paid for by the sports department. the engineers' salaries were paid by the sports department. the high end editing equipment... paid for by... the sports department. i think your printing of unnamed whinning shows a lack of integrity. george made money and he certainly didnt drain the resources of the news department. finally, take some time to look at the quarter hour ratings in the m-f 5pm and 6pm newscasts. the numbers would rise when george came on the air. I wanted to thank you for the work you do on this site ... entertaining, occasionally informative and definitely gives those of us in the industry some things to think about! (3/5/07)

Sorry this is so long, but please read it because this is very important. Without your help, ThereIsNoRadio may very soon be no longer able to provide you with shows like Lenay D's Musical Saturday Mornings, The Don Stugots Experience, The Music that Mikey Likes, DJNewStyle, Suburban Shakedown, Kieska UK's Weekly Showcase, Hear It Loud Radio, RobOnt Radio, Hate the Radio, Fandick, and The Badmonkey Show/The Asylum. In fact, without your help, no other internet radio station will likely be around to provide them either. To be clear from the beginning, I beleive that the artists that we play at ThereIsNoRadio deserve payment for their work. The vast majority of the artists played at TiNR are hand chosen and mixed in with more popular music as an effort to promote them and encourage sales of their music. Many of them are artists that you will not hear on traditional corporate radio and it is stations like ours that get the word out about these artists. The artists in our heaviest rotation fall into this category. The Copyright Royalty Board announced on Friday the increase in royalties for internet radio. The board rejected all arguments made by webcasters and adopted the proposal from SoundExchange (the royalty collection agency created by the RIAA). The rates we have been paying for the last year are the 2005 rates. The new rates for 2006 will be charged to us retroactively and they will increase every year for the foreseeable future. By 2009, we will be paying over twice the royalty cost per listener that we paid in 2005, which is way beyond our means at this point without a serious change in the way we do things. I do not have any desire to fill the station up with constant commercial ads to make up the difference in royalties. We do not have the corporate backing to cover this cost. The new royalty rates will look like this: 2006 - $.0008 per performance 2007 - $.0011 per performance 2008 - $.0014 per performance 2009 - $.0018 per performance 2010 - $.0019 per performance 1 performance = 1 play of one song multiplied by the number of listeners tuned in for any part of it. At 100 connections almost constantly tuned in for the year, we will owe about $864 in royalty payments per month or $10,368 for the year. If we get to 1000 listeners for the majority of the day, we will owe around $103,3680 for the year. These numbers are just the 2006 rates at $0.0008 per performance. As you can see, by 2008 at $0.0014 per performance, we will owe about $3,024/month and $36,288 per year with just 100 listeners. We do not know yet what we will owe the RIAA in retroactive charges for 2006. These rates do not include the other royalty payments we make to SESAC and ASCAP. These rates also do not include the cost of bandwidth and server capacity. This may very well destroy not just ThereIsNoRadio, but also all non-corporate backed LEGAL internet radio. This will not affect the hundreds of thousands of internet radio stations operating illegally without paying royalties. Everyone involved in ThereIsNoRadio is here only for their love of radio and none of us make a dime from it. As you can see from the above, we spend money to make these shows possible without any expectation of compensation. What can you do? Write to, or Call your Representatives: www.house.gov... Call your Senators: www.senate.gov... Call the Copyright Royalty Board: www.loc.gov... Let them know that if they support this, they are willfully supporting the destruction of free and independent media, the interests of big business, and the silencing of our voices. Make sure they understand that they will not be receiving your vote if they refuse to intervene on behalf of small webcasters nationwide and force the Copyright Royalty Board and the RIAA to come up with reasonable royalty rates that do not threaten the existance of non-corporate owned internet radio. These rates only hurt those of us operating within the law. They do not do anything to stop piracy and they will not stop the pirate internet radio stations that continue to operate without paying royalties now. Thank you all for supporting ThereIsNoRadio for as long as you have. I sincerely hope you will be able to continue that support. Badmonkey (3/5/07)

Sorry to hear of the passing of Wayne Hettrich. Wayne gave me my first job in broadcasting when he hired me as a transmitter engineer in 1962. I will always be grateful to him for that. Now I am happily retired after a 42 year career in broadcasting (39 at WMAL and at WPGC). Burt Cohen (3/5/07)

John Normand gets the Don and Mike show producer post from Rob Spevak who goes back to his "comedy" role on the show. (John and Rob absolutely hate each other.) God, sidekick suckup Myke O'Meara, the real genius of the show, could make even Joe Stalin sound funny. (3/5/07)

Any news on when the John Riggins show will be simulcast on MASN. The website and original press release says February 2007, but obviously it is now March and there is nada. (3/5/07)

Do you like the song "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes"? Then tune in 950 AM WCTN; they've just played it 3 times in the last 90 minutes. The most recent play came at about 3:40 this afternoon, and only minutes after its 2nd most recent play. It'll probably play two more times before the signal is lost here in Springfield. (3/5/07)

Wayne Hetrich, retired broadcast engineer, passed away late last week after heart trouble. I know he had worked at WOL and a bunch of other places years back. In more recent years he was working part-time at Professional Flight Service in Indian Head, MD in the avionics shop. He was another one of those people who forgot more in any given ten minutes than most of us will know in our lives. The family will receive friends at Hunt's Funeral Home on Rt 925 in Waldorf tomorrow (Tuesday) evening between 7 and 9. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 AM. Burial will follow at Cheltenham. I'm sure you have this from All Access, but... Four Radio Companies Agree To Payola Settlement With FCC... CLEAR CHANNEL, CBS RADIO, ENTERCOM and CITADEL have tentatively agreed to pay the government $12.5 million and provide 8,400 half-hour segments of free airtime for independent record labels and local artists as part of a consent decree with the FCC. (3/5/07)

Funny how things might have been different if the slippery slope warned about by Kurt Hansen and others who covered webcasting from the beginning. Personally, I'd like to send ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and any other performance rights agencies a monthly bill for $25 to $75 a minute for each song under their license as a "Promotional Fee". I think commercial time for even the smallest station would justify that. (3/5/07)

What were the neilson numbers for the noon shows?? Who won? Thanks (3/5/07)

Dave's response: Noon news on DC TV? I'm pretty sure that Channel 9's JC 'cast is in the lead.....

As mentioned, the proposed webcasting rates would cripple local and national webcasters. As a local oldies station, listed on iTunes and Windows Media, I've managed to do reasonable well with audiences. Unfortunately all that goes to pot now. This is a real world example, in February I paid $140 which covered my Soundexchange, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC royalties. With the new rates for 2007, I would have to pay $2,237 alone to Soundexchange for February. It's like you driving your car on the Beltway every day and they decided to make the Wilson Bridge a toll bridge, and charge every driver since Jan 1st 2006 retro-actively, Rick @ 2NG Radio (3/5/07)

Dave's response: Independent internet radio "stations" often plan little-heard tunes that regular radio won't. And promote bands that get little or no airplay. It makes no sense to hike the music royalty rates. All that'll do is make it more difficult for indie bands to "break through" by putting many internet "stations" out of business. If the music biz wasn't so evil, so corrupt, and so fucked up, it would be PAYING internet radio stations to play their underplayed tunes. Not the other way around. Oh wait, that would be "payola." Nevermind.....

Has WPOC made some changes in there weekend programing schedule? I wonder if there will be any other changes? In the last ratings book they fell to number 3 behind WERQ and WLIF. It's be quite a while since they were lower than number 1 or number 2 in Baltimore? (3/5/07)

Say, is her voice getting deeper and the lump in her throat bigger. And she's been seen at national airport taking a flight to sweden? Love, I'm da Wanda (3/5/07)

Dave's response: Man, after his rage against Cingular for bungling his daughter's cell phone account, this morning Korny went flying through a different thought every 10 seconds or so. Sound like he's doing just a tad too much coffee. My advice: Slow down and the show will go faster and smoother. But, then again, who takes my advice! If they did, BA would still be producing D&M, sports would be on 104, and The Globe would be spinning Siouxsie every hour and Ian Dury at least three times a day.....

Out here in the wild far reaches of distant Prince William County (the Dumfries/Montclair metroplex, also known as "Gateway to Manassas"), the 1 March premiere of Comcast's expanded Digital Tier was, and continues to be, a disaster. Every channel above 99 (including many previously basic subscription programs) is either scrambled or out of sync. All the "good" stuff (National Geographic, the Discovery Channels, BBCA, etc) is unwatchable. The much-heralded Comcast "Video on Demand" is also out. Resetting the box twice from the cable operator is worthless, and the service guy can't get here until this evening. I love technology as much as the next guy, but only when it works. I expect better for my money. Genghis Cohen (3/5/07)

Hello, I recently purchased a HD TV. Having replaced my antenna I would like to orient it for the best reception. Is there a map available that shows all the transmitter locations serving the D. C. area? Any help would be appreciated. Rick Reedy, Sterling, VA (3/5/07)

Dave's response: There in Sterling, your best bet would be to aim your digital TV antenna in a general eastward direction to pick up most DC TV stations. Most DC TV stations broadcast their analog and digital signals from towers in northwest DC, southern Bethesda, or north Arlington. It's not like aiming a satellite antenna. You don't have to be pointed exactly at the transmitter.....

What, no Anne Coulter rant from our fearless leader yet??? (3/5/07)

Dave's response: What, the "faggot" reference regarding John Edwards? What am I supposed to say that hasn't been said? She's a moron.....

Dave, I listened to The Globe online a fair amount shortly after the switch. It certainly seems like a positive transition from WARW's tired classic rock format, and at least 50% of the tunes they now play are ones that I actually enjoy listening to. For once, CBS has used the DC market to try out a somewhat new and different concept that entertains me.even if the basic slogan 'World Class Rock' has already reached its 'sell-by date' in other markets, and generally I find the AAA format to be a trifle 'sleepy' for my tastes. The Globe still misses by a mile my ideal format, which would be entirely focused on edgy new rock music from 2007. It's too bad they couldn't grab the WHFS call letters.but then perhaps these days the 'HFS call letters have negative conations to many folks who weren't as familiar with the old station's 'legacy' as you and I were. It's funny how close they ended up coming to 'WGTB'. (3/5/07)

Hi Dave, Just to let you know that the software which is targeting ads appearing at DCRTV to the location of specific site visitors is working exceptionally well. When I open the Mailbag at the moment using my London web connection, I get Virgin Media ads relating to its current dispute with Sky Television in the UK. (Sky has withdrawn several channels from Virgin Media's newly-acquired UK cable TV systems over a pricing dispute and Branson is reacting in a typically flamboyant manner.) It's amusing to see these ads displayed at a site focusing on DC-Baltimore radio and TV! Cheers, Mark (3/5/07)

Dave's response: It's amazing how widely read DCRTV is. Not just in the DC-Baltimore area. Go to the very bottom of the Front Page and click on the Geo Visitors button and you'll see that we get a nice audience from across the USA and even a smattering from around the world. Since we use three addresses - www.dcrtv.com, www.dcrtv.org, and www.dcrtv.net - you'll need to click on the Geo Visitors button from all three site address on the three front pages to see our total visitor location information.....

To the poster who says that watching games in Standard Definition is fine because you don't own an HD TV: "SD may show you everything you need to see, but it's like looking through cataracts to see it." (I know, I used to have cataracts due to a birth defect and the difference between seeing with them and without them is the same as watching an SD game and an HD game.) The point is, that the games USED TO BE IN HD ON COMCAST SPORTSNET. Angelos has no problem raising ticket prices or spending money to sue somebody for asbestos poisoning, but he won't pony up the money to show the games in HD. The argument to keep SD broadcasts is ludicrous. If you didn't have a CD player, would you insist we all still listen to records? If you didn't own a DVD player, would you all suggest we still watch VHS tapes? The point is HD is the future of television and Angelos is taking us backwards. We might as well be watching the Orioles and Nationals on a black and white set. (3/5/07)

I tried to access the station’s website but it’s not available as I write this. Dave, have you heard of any programming changes at the station? I hope that they haven’t cancelled “Handel on the Law” on Sunday which, in my opinion, is a very interesting and fun show. (3/4/07)

About MASN, the Examiner says, "fans from Pennsylvania to North Carolina will be able to see all 162 regular season games of both the Nationals and the Orioles." Not true for all us. Customer service reps don't know anything about MASN and e-mail responses are generic about always looking to improve programming for customers. (3/4/07)

"i hear rumblings of shaekeups already at danny boys triple zzz, i mean triple x radio" - Where have you been? there have already been two or three! Danny Boy runs a very tight ship and demands success at any cost, human or otherwise, regadless of the ratings or signals of his stations, or the record of his team. But even with nominal revenue success he can get out in a year or two, if he wanted, and double or triple his invetsment, even taking into account a lower multiple model considering the weak signals. It looks as if Penn Jillette is pulling the plug on his radio show; The most recent podcast uploaded to PennRadio.com is called "The End". He mentions in the program that CBS wanted to bump the show up to two hours, but he's gearing up for another run of the TV show "Identity" and his schedule keeps him from his family entirely too much as it is, so he declined. Too bad. It actually was fairly entertaining, once you tuned out how often he humped his atheism. (3/4/07)

Re: "Only a repug could come up with this sleeze." You sir are an idiot. The Baltimore Sun is practically a house organ of the Democratic Party. David Nitkin is a left-wing reporter who was "banned" by the Ehrlich Administration. I am not an Obama supporter but this article is a disgusting example of "The Politics of Personal Destruction". If you read the article closely the so-called "genealogists" are amateurs who did most of their "research" over the internet. Professional genealogists have cautioned that the findings are not reliable. This article should not have been published without much more careful vetting and verification-instaed it PUT ON THE FRONT PAGE! As for the motivation for this shameful attack on Obama, all you have to do is look at the other candidates who are mentioned: John Edwards and John McCain. Which candidate is conspicously not mentioned at all? Could it be the one who discovered her Jewish heritage just before a Senate campaign in New York in 2000? One of the things I learned when I first set foot in Master Control at 3000 West Alameda Avenue (which was long before I set foot in 30 Rock or even 4001 Nebraska) was that the first law of engineering is "If it isn't broke, don't f**k with it. ("If they're all in HD by 2008, won't that be good enough, or will you have gone postal about it by then?") I'd like to see MASN upgrade now (I promise I will not go postal if they don't).. they have been boasting about having the Orioles and the Nationals, yet Angelos won't spend the money for 21st century equipment - he must have blown his budget for the rights plus the MASN ticker that squeezes the screen down way too much. Watching an HD broadcast vs. SD is night and day. If it was 1966, we would be clamoring for the games to be shown in color, same concept, 40+ years later. ABC Sports also rates low marks for not airing college basketball games in HDTV as well (can't pin that one on Albritton and WJLA). (3/3/07)

Now let me get this straight: That MASN is not broadcasting the Nats and Orioles in HD makes it unwatchable? That seems to be the verdict by some posters on this board. I don't own an HD TV, and may not for a couple more years. I have other financial priorities which make a new TV set not feasible at the moment. I've watched baseball on regular TV for years - and I've seen games on HD elsewhere. Sure, it's a better picture, but regular TV shows me everything I need to see. I've heard the games will start being in HD later in the season. If they're all in HD by 2008, won't that be good enough, or will you have gone postal about it by then? (3/3/07)

Only a liberal would find it sleazy that a man has achieved as much as Obama, in spite of his ancestors and would judge him by what his long dead ancestors did, which was legal at the time. Of course they tried the same thing with the Bushes. While it may have been a Republican who helped bring this info into the light of day, where it should be, maybe this was actually the work of her Her Royal Clintoness, trying somehow to taint Obama. Good thing I read her thesis first. I guess the first information debunks many 'truths' that are held dear to the liberal mantra, whereas her thesis shows the truth in much of what Hillary is criticized for. Go Obama, Beat Clinton. Leave them all alone. They are getting what they deserved. In light of all of this, my question goes out to that afternoon guy Toby. Dude, you are actually good, what the hell are you doing here? The only thing wrong with the station before was the afternoon drive, then your buddy boss came in and fucked everything else up. Now the station has the afternoon drive and nothing else. 99.5's desire to put a criminal, washed-up train wreck of a person like Bobby Brown on their airwaves is shameful and not even original – years ago Chris Rock staged a tongue-in-cheek "support" rally for Brown while he was in jail and about to be released. Let Brown stay in jail where he belongs and hopefully 99.5 will find better uses for its money, like finding some on-air talent that is not as horrible and ratings-repellent as the likes of Kane, for whom this will be his claim to fame and the only time he ever finds himself getting national press coverage. Sad. Also, the reason why Kane agitated Brown over the phone with his 'hardball' question was because he would not have had the courage to do so to Brown's face in the studio. Ultimately, neither man is interesting enough to garner this much attention. -Ted (3/2/07)

This was a result of an on-air "argument" Doni was having with regional celebrity, Flounder and she said something as she walked out of the studio. You only knew that she might of have dropped the f-bomb because something was said about using that kind of language in front of an open mike. It actually did not sound like anything on-air. Usually Elliot will make an endless number of jokes, but he is uncharacteristically silent on the issue. (3/2/07)

Ha Ha Ha ha ha ha !!!!!, It is so funny that after 99.5 has screwed over so many people recently, it's great that Bobby Brown got to bend them over for a change. I never thought much of Brown before, but now I just might go out & buy one of his old CD"s . As for the extra media coverage this story is getting, it will eventually backfire when all those people listen to the Kane show & hears first hand... how the show sucks (3/2/07)

Okay. Let me see if I have this straight. Kane offered to pay 20 grand to bail Bobby Brown out of jail, in return for co-hosting the morning show. Seems to me it would have been cheaper for CC to get an ISDN line in the general jail visitor's area and leave him there. Would've been better copy. Then, Bobby bailed on that deal after objecting to the obligatory list of questions. Seems to me Bobby needs a crash course in humility. Idiot. (3/2/07)

To the guy who wrote in saying he's lucky to have a decent job in broadcasting because all he has is a high-school degree: Broadcasting has never really been much more than a blue collar profession, not unlike a factory worker, bus driver or clerical worker. Folks are drawn to it because they think it's interesting and glamorous. "Interesting" and "glamorous" are subjective terms; you can decide for yourself whether it is or isn't those things. One thing that is not subject to interpretation, however: the middle to low-middle class lifestyle that typically comes with the territory. There are many reasons newsrooms are populated with young people - that's one of them. The older one gets, the greater his or her financial obligations. Many people move on - for money or for their own defitinition of challenge/glamour. Newsrooms everywhere now are weeding out staffers, not replacing them, hiring freelancers willing to work with minimal, if any, benefits. Look around: how many people over 40 do you see in a newsroom? How many under 35? My sense is that folks who are still working in a newsroom are extremely vulnerable to cutbacks - with devastating financial and personal implications - unless they can acquire broader skills and apply them in a higher value industry. How you do THAT is another conversation, but here is the test: look ahead at people who are 10, 12, 15 years older than you. They topped out salarywise years ago and know their job could be done by someone younger for a lo tless money. If you want that kind of vulnerability and insecurity - and want to work 'til you're 75 (if you can), stay right where you are. If not, learn to control your fate -- before some manager down the hall or at "corporate" controls it for you. Good night and good luck. -- Thurston Howell III (3/2/07)

RE: "GOOD JOB KANE!! This is making national headlines and he has deffinetly made a name for himself." Yeah a name that will be forgotten in about two seconds. I doubt Kane did this all by himself and was merely taking instruction. It's not like he has $19,000 of Clear Channel's money at his disposal because a dim light bulb goes on over his head. This sounds like some small market stunt and am glad to see it didn't pan out. (3/2/07)

Speakin' of tomatoes... Anyone hearing Earl Weaver's "Manager Corner" tirade blooper for the first time may not realize that he apparently was an avid tomato gardener. In fact, Weaver even grew tomato plants behind the stands near the foul pole at Memorial Stadium. Its rumored that after a series where Baltimore hosted the Yankees, Yankee manager Billy Martin poisoned Weaver's tomato plants. Tom Marr (the announcer who's on the tape with Weaver www.hankhayes.com) would tell the story about the time he was driving Earl to the ballpark in Milwaukee. Marr hated when Weaver smoked in the car, so he removed the lighter from the socket. Earl needed a smoke, so he ordered Marr to stop the car in this really bad section of Milwaukee. So Earl goes up to this shady character, who is standing on the corner probably dealing drugs, and asks for a match. The dude says, "Get outta here honky, I don' t have a match." So, Earl yells back at the guy, "GIVE ME A FU*KIN' MATCH OR GIVE ME YOUR MONEY!" The guy gave Earl a match. So Earl basically mugged a guy for a match .... They just don't make 'em like that any more. (3/2/07)

Any word on the length of Donielle Flynn's suspension? LO (3/2/07)

The blonde tomato with Gordo is (once upon a time CIA operative) Valerie Plame. Ask Karl Rove, he'll tell you. (3/2/07)

Um.... was anyone shocked that Bobby Brown didn't post for Kane's show?? He beat the talent outta Whitney!!! Do you think he's going to show up for a low-rated local DC show?? Not in a million years. Hope the suits at 99.5 saved the receipt!! (3/2/07)

RE: Recently I started listening to 106.7 at night. At midnight the sound goes really low and I can barely hear anything at all. Has anyone else experienced this/// Yes, often after midnight I listen to the sports babble on JFK, with the Sleep function on the old clock radio enabled. At least 3-4 times recently the sound on the show has been garbled and low, but the commercials still play at full blast. Don't know why. I just change the station and nod off to some other talk show equally able to induce REM sleep within seconds. (3/2/07)

Reguardless if Bobby Brown does actually go on the morning show on Hot 99.5 or not.....GOOD JOB KANE!! This is making national headlines and he has deffinetly made a name for himself. (3/2/07)

Recently I started listening to 106.7 at night. At midnight the sound goes really low and I can barely hear anything at all. Has anyone else experienced this? (3/2/07)

Dave's response: Just be thankful for small blessings.....

It is so funny listening to ole Donnie Boy getting excited over their new web site and how cool it is that content changes constantly and the web site doesn't give the same ole content day by day. LOL -- How far was his fat head up his fat ass to not know this was the thing to do YEARS ago??? O&A and R&F have been doing the same thing for YEARS. Don acts like this is some new idea. Way to try and catch up Donald -- Even though you are STILL behind you fat fool. LOL -- These two sound like old men discussing photo shopping. Don and Mike, it's nothing new. Let me guess, in 2015 they will utilize the TRUE power of YouTube. (Yes, I know they used it once, but O&A have created several viral videos) Anyway, I am starting to feel like I am listening to out of touch senior citizens! (3/2/07)

Open Letter to New WJFK PD CK, I dare you to spend five minutes listening to Unzipped after Don & Mike. The two hosts, Michelle Jerson and Michael Checkoway, are some of the most untalented radio "personalities" I have ever heard. For a major market in DC, their show is embarrassingly bad. Don't even get me started on Michelle's voice. Sounds like some reject from a Long Island public access show. Loveline, this is not. Please dump them or at the very least bump them to the middle of the night. Ron & Fez - the most talented duo in radio - are now doing a FreeFM show weeknights in NYC (in addition to their XM show)...Is a simulcast too much to ask? Come on CK, do the right thing! Now that the floodgates have been opened on Channel-9's history, how about these interesting facts: (well... you be the judge): Prior to Channel-9's debut as WOIC-TV on Sunday, January 16, 1949, many programs of the CBS-TV Network were carried by WMAL-TV 7. WOIC-TV (along with New York's WOR) was a unit of the Bamberger's Department Store which had founded and still owned radio's Mutual Broadcasting System at the time. Accordingly, WOIC-TV 9 was slated to be the DC affiliate for the proposed Mutual TELEVISION Broadcasting System which never got off the ground. As hokey as it sounds, Channel-9 was actually promoted in DC newspapers by advertisements that blared "Oh, I See TV!" (3/2/07)

Dave's response: A few more days of warm wet weather and the clouds of gnats will be back, too. Ah, isn't DC a fun place to live!

Lots of plugs for DCRTV on R&F - they are having fun with it, but also apologized and hope that you don't hold it against them if and when they have something real to announce. (3/2/07)

Dave's response: I want an autographed pic of Fez and all will be forgiven.....

Hey Dave, Fezzie just set you straight on air: "Don't believe everything you read on DCRTV". Oh, SNAP! (3/2/07)

Dave's response: Newsblurb, what newsblurb? Mass psychosis, probably.....

Don and Mike - I actually got excited when all I could hear was Mike and Rob talking while shopping with Super Dave yesterday. I was hoping Don had to "take a personal day", but then Domingo started blithering in the middle of a great joke,"Just so I can get it straight..." If you can't pick up on the poop joke within the first 10 ASS REFERENCES don't put the show into a screeching halt cause your too slow. Get the show out of Don's hands! Its over! You can't run with the dogs anymore and I'm sorry for your loss, but its REALLY affecting the show. You made the wrong "decision" in November. (3/2/07)

Ah!!!! Baseball back on the radio! Thank you, WaPo Radio. It just makes me feel so good. (3/2/07)

Just briefly I want to say that I have been a channel 4 viewer for about 35 years. Channel 4 is my favorite. I did see George Michael, Jim Vance and Doreen Gentzler (spelling) on the 6PM Thursday news. It was very professional. They made a good team. Did not see the 11:00 broadcast where he said his goodbyes. I hope it was in “style and professional”. Joan (3/2/07)

Very sad day today - Ron Bennington, of "The Ron and Fez Show" on XM 202, announced that Fez Whatley, his partner of almost 15 years, was leaving their show: he was going to "move on" and was tired of dealing with the "f*cked up XM listeners." (3/2/07)

Good things I'll remember about George Michael: he was the one broadcaster in DC who NEVER accepted that the Baltimore Orioles were a home team and did his coverage accordingly. Bad things I'll remember about George Michael: he has had his lips firmly planted on Danny Boy Snyder's butt for many years and did his coverage accordingly. (3/2/07)

I'd rather see Liddy in his Speedo than those two media whores Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame. God what some people grow up to be. (3/2/07)

I wonder if in 1999 WTOP credited the hundred's of radio stations across the country who had been doing pothole patrol since the mid-80's? (3/2/07)

blog.pennlive.com - Jeff "The Jammer" Kauffman, half of WTPA 93.5 FM's newly re-united morning team, has died. "It's tragic news," said Ron Giovanniello, WTPA's general manager. Quite the emotional and eloquent farewell by George Michael last night on the 11 p.m. newscast on Channel 4.... (3/2/07)

I couldn't agree more with your rant about Stephen Hunter. Ever since Burd went to mornings, I have been missing the fun and interesting cast of characters that made his weekend show so good that they moved him to mornings. The Post people (you can't call people this boring "personalities") are what is dragging down the station. Let Washington Post Radio be a radio station instead of a constant commercial for the newspaper. (3/2/07)

The announcement of the swap between The Washington Post and Detroit Evening News was December 6, 1977. Channel 9 becme WDVM on June 26, 1978. Gannett took over the Detroit Evening News Association in February of 1986 and Channel 9 became WUSA-TV on July 4th, 1986. When I think of George Michael, one word comes to mind "passion." Whether it's sports, music, or whatever he involves himself in, it's 100% or not at all. I remember him as a super jock. I remember him taking vacation time off to fill in on Orioles broadcasts a number of years ago. Let me tell you, he was damn good. In a time when going through the motions is commonplace, George never settled for that. Although sports consumed him for the past 25 years, George never lost his "passion" for the oldies that he played when they were hits on top 40 radio. Many nights when I was on the air at WBIG-FM, the phone would ring and it would be George calling. He was listening on his way home and would make comments like "Goodbye Baby" by Jack Scott. "Boy was it good to hear that again." George will continue to bring that "passion" to whatever he chooses to do in the future. Just call me a fan, Johnny Dark (WorldSpace Satellite Radio) (3/2/07)

I can't find anything on the NBC4 website about George leaving or video of his goodbye. Am I missing it? When every broadcast and print outlet in town, including the competition (very classy of Brett), doing the story, wouldn't you think you, at the least, you would want the eyeballs on your website, much less paying tribute to the guy? (3/2/07)

WTOP became WDVM in July, 1978. WDVM became WUSA in July of 1986. Shawn in DC. (3/2/07)

"The Saturday show [Marc Sterne] used to do on WTEM revealed no great insight to the game - it was as if it was something the radio station felt they had to do and he was stuck with it." I think the Saturday baseball show (which debuted two or three years before the Nationals' inaugural season) was actually Sterne's idea that he somehow sold to the same management suits who'd previously canned Phil Wood for (in their view) talking too much baseball and not enough Redskins. While Sterne may not be in Wood's class when it comes to overall baseball knowledge (few are), he was heads and shoulders above any of the other hosts on 980 in that department and showed more enthusiasm as well. Post Radio has an opportunity to fill a definite void in the local sports talk landscape by providing some Nats oriented call-in programming, whether following the games or elsewhere on its schedule. After a brief flurry of baseball talk on WTEM when the Nats first reported to spring training, the station appears to have reverted to its usual policy of largely ignoring them. The only local host on Triple X who seems to care is Bram Weinstein who had Ryan Zimmerman on his show the other day. By contrast, the programs hosted by Anita Marks and Tom Davis on Baltimore's WJFK-AM are paying all kinds of attention to the Orioles right now. Speaking of Weinstein, he apparently does a second hour starting at 1 PM that's not heard in the DC area but carried by Red Zebra's Virginia Beach affiliate. Mike, Fairfax (3/2/07)

What a blatant ripoff without attribution or acknowldgement! WTOP has been doing "Pothole Patrol" Every year since 1999!!!! - "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MARCH 1, 2007... DDOT LAUNCHES 'POTHOLE PATROL' WITH MAYOR ADRIAN M. FENTY... Warmer Temperatures Spark Annual Pothole Season and DDOT Crews are on the Prowl... Crews from the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) on Thursday joined Mayor Adrian M. Fenty to fill a pothole in Southeast at Minnesota Avenue and 36th Street. March brings the start of the annual pothole season as rising temperatures bring about the advent of potholes. DDOT crews are out in force throughout the District of Columbia, inspecting roads and responding to requests. Residents in the District can help be DDOT's partners by calling the Mayor's Citywide Call Center at (202) 727-1000 to report potholes. DDOT works to fill reported potholes within 48 hours... DDOT typically receives the most pothole reports in March - more than any other month of the year, as cold temperatures ease and winter weather takes its toll on roads. DDOT uses both in-house crews and contractors for pothole repair... DDOT works to fill service requests first - then repairs other observed potholes. Last year DDOT received approximately 3,600 requests for repairs either called into 727-1000 or sent to the DC.gov Website via email. All of those requests were filled." (3/2/07)

Dave, I missed the farewell yesterday, did ol’ George go out with a bang or a whimper? Glowing comments from his former co-workers in that Post article the other day, weren’t they? Ouch… (3/2/07)

Dave's response: I didn't catch the 11 PM farewell, but George and Jim and Doreen were very classy on the 6 PM sign-off. Just a few jokes and a few very funny clips. Low-key, but heck, that's the kind of guy George is. NOT!!!!!

If it makes the disgruntled ex-Clear Channel employees feel any better, Bobby Brown welched on the deal with Hot 99.5 after objecting to a line of questions from Kane over the child support issue. The station will try to get the money returned. All in all though, the publicity from all this could still be a net plus for the station. Kane really needs to establish his voice in the D.C. market, this is his chance. Everett W. www.hot995.com (3/2/07)

It's interesting to read the Hanafi Muslim coverage stories. I was an intern at WDVM (Now WUSA, before that WTOP...Channel 9 in any case) and the assignment editor, an engineer, and I were the only ones in the station the night the siege broke. All of the air and editorial staff had gone home. I tried to hunt down Gordon Peterson by phone (who apparently had driven home, seen or heard that the siege had broken and turned right around) while they warmed up the newsroom camera and we discussed just who would go on the air if we couldn't find Gordon. I wrote some copy. The assignment editor ran the camera and Gordon showed up in time to keep any of the rest of us from embarrassing ourselves. And that's why Channel 9 was late to coverage that night. Rich Kolker - Ashburn, VA. (3/2/07)

Dave's response: Anyone know the dates when Washington Post-owned WTOP-TV became Detroit News-owned WDVM-TV and then became Gannett-owned WUSA-TV?

Some DC area eagle sure is spending an awful lot of time hunting flies. Just trying to drive traffic to his goofy new website, or mebbe the eagle is in reality a big fat toad? Or is that load? Donni spends more time hunting flies than Wham!’s George Michael (badoom boom!). I guess he’s just natural bully, or as a friend observed upon seeing his pic, “Boy, you can just SEE that he’s an a-hole.” (3/2/07)

What somebody needs to do is tell WTWP to stop promoting Burd and Doyle as airing from 5:30 to 10 a.m., as the station plugged during last night's George Washington broadcast. The ongoing promotional confusion over what airs when on that station is at least half the problem there. Everett W. (3/2/07)

Dave - remember a few years ago when 94.7 nee WARW played all their songs in alphabetical order? There's this "radio station" (I put it in quotes because it has a "frequency" when it's actually an Internet only) is playing songs in order of title every week, one letter at a time, e.g. this week they're doing the I's. It's called RadioA2Z. www.myspace.com... I think anyone who misses the old WARW might wanna check this out. - Al (3/2/07)

Max Dugan wasn't "canned". He resigned...regretfully. (3/2/07)

Dave's response: Gee, if we have Stevens 2.0, why not Max 2.0? All he would have to do on the 94.7 playlist is replace Lynyrd Skynyrd with the Talking Heads.....

A Junkie guy taking the PD position at 106.7? I guess that means no O&A for mornign drive. (3/2/07)

Dave, have not visited since the Bloated Reverber's return. The pic of O'Meara and child rolled me to the floor! THANKS!! As 'freaky' as your look, O'Meara's got you outfreaked X4. "Bad camera angle"??...Uh huh. HaHaa. Thanks...still laffin'! Ed in Fenton PS: Kidd Chris's podcast is easier on the ears than DnM. (3/2/07)

Hello, I found your website while trying to figure what happened to Burd and Doyle in the mornings after 8:30AM. I have been listening to their show while going to work between 8:15 and 8:45am. Someone needs to tell the Post Radio this guy and his friends are boring, unorganized, etc. and that they need to go back to the old schedule. They have already lost me after 8:30, more ads will not help them. BTW, do you know what happened to Mike Moss. It's used to be awkward with him and Jessica Doyle. (3/2/07)

Did you see the clip of George Michael on the Carson Show? 4 showed it toward the end of the 6:00 on Thursday. Johnny introduces George as "George Michaels," but they don't show any of the interview, so you can't tell why he's on . . . maybe the launch of the Sports Machine? After that, there was a sweet montage, showing George over the years . . . great to see the old anchors and old sets . . . and everyone with hair! Much more dignified and less mushy than the Arch farewell . . .(3/2/07)

How pathetic that Clear Channel would not keep veteran talent around nor pay their existing staff decently due to their tight, cost cutting philosophy, but yet will spend money to bail bum and criminal Bobby Brown out of jail and child support obligations just for a few days on their station. Then again, maybe he will announce run for the next D.C. Mayoral race. (3/2/07)

Please, Ch. 4, let George Michael take the fake-fan audio, that we have to hear during real highlights, with him when he leaves tonight (Thursday). Please. (3/2/07)

Come on Don, stop fucking bothering about this website, if you dont like it then dont fucking read it....change the website fuck ass..... More importantly let us all pray that Fez makes a speedy recovery and is back at work tomorrow!!!! (3/2/07)

Re: Bobby Brown and Hot 99.5. I was initially repulsed and offended by Clear Channel's actions. How dare they take money that could pay a hard working, honest employees salary who may have to pay child support themselves. $19,000 could be 4 to 6 months salary for an administrative, production or promotions person. But then I thought, if I could ask Jeffykins or Dan Patrick's brother what the thought process was in this decision, the answer would probably be, "it's just business". Yep, just business. However you can draw attention to a station by whatever means necessary. If bailing out a deadbeat dad with a lengthy criminal record who hasn't hit the top 10 since 1992 is just business, what's your business? It's not radio. This is the same company that loves to tout their moral high ground through who they do & don't have on their airwaves. A company that has a full time staff of 3 or 4 in programming running an 8 station cluster. Check out their smaller markets, it's happening. One person whose typical workweek is a 10 to 12 day Monday through Friday and doing or running remotes all weekend. A 6 day work week all year minus 2 weeks' vacation, minus 6 holidays, which you know they work a couple of with no compensation, comes out to 297 workdays a year. Guess what that small market Clear Channel employee makes a year. About 19 grand. I'm not mad though, It's just business. (3/2/07)

I found it fitting that WRC faded to black after the 11:00 news went off tonight (Thursday). Perhaps they know that with the breakup of their top team, they are mourning the loss of their ratings dominance in DC... Way to go NBC/U - it wasn't broke, and you fixed it. (3/2/07)

(Regarding Don & Mike) ***YYYAAAWWWWNNN*** (3/2/07)

Good Bye!! King George, There will never be another like you. You were the BEST! Happy that I'll still get you and Sonny for the Redskins. I've watch since the year you got here, no other to watch after Glenn passed away. All who have been on since have sucks and still do. (3/2/06)

Loved Don's interview with George yesterday. George is leaving while he's on top, in 1st place. Hey Don, if you retire now you can get out while you're still in 6th or 7th. (3/2/07)

Realizing it doesn't show up on any radar screens, Troy Johnson and Jon Boesche', nights on HFS often do hit upon some really great radio. Although it has it's ups and downs, tonight was their best show yet. Anytime you have a black and white pairing, with one playing the fool, you know it's gonna be some funny stuff. Tonight when Jon called the show "Martin Luther King and Sling Blade" and how Troy's nightly news stories are often labeled by John as "Kill Whitey" segments...man, that's just some fun nonsense. When Jon rallies for the white man who's "taking a beating", I just shake my head and laugh. A sense of humor with real topics. Not bad. Not bad at all. Rob. Parkville (3/2/07)

How intriguing to read Chris Core's memories of 30 years ago and the Hanafi Muslim siege. I was midday anchor at WTOP then, and wound up anchoring 21 straight hours--10AM the day it started straight through the afternoon, evening, and overnight to the next morning at 7AM. Then, after barely staying awake to get home and have a brief coma, I came back in to anchor the following evening, til it all ended that second night. After the first few hours, WTOP expanded its coverage to include twice-hourly 5 minute updates to all the CBS owned and operated radio stations nationwide. At one point, on-air, I referred to the hostage takers at the 3 locations as "black muslims". This infuriated the ringleader, Hamas Abdul Khalis, who called the station demanding an apology from me or else he'd "start cutting off heads, putting them in paper bags, and throwing them out windows" at B'nai Brith. At the time, WTOP Radio was co-owned and co-located with channel 9, so it was decided by tv news director Jim Snyder that I'd take 5 minutes away from radio coverage to go downstairs to WTOP-TV. I did, dressed in some really bright colored, tv-inappropriate shirt, and uttered my phony mea culpas. All the while, my then-wife, Camille Bohannon (now with AP Radio), was covering the part of the siege over by the Islamic center. And...she and I had just given notice at WTOP, and were going to WRC All-news 98. Had the siege gone another 24 hours, We'd have had to jump ship at the stroke of midnight and raced over to Nebraska Avenue to continue coverage for WRC! Where I met my colleague-to-be Rudy Brewington, and learned that he had gone to lunch with Maurice Williams that day, and had planned to take the elevator with Maurice back to the press room. But at the final second Rudy decided to see somebody on the ground floor of the District Building, thereby saving his life. What a time that was! Jim Bohannon, Westwood One (3/2/07)
