Imagine how many more readers you will get from reading their show's website, there is even a link from their website to your website. Although, what they are doing, it's been done before by the competition, by Opie & Anthony ironically enough. (3/1/07) (Regarding today's Rant:) Dave: Just to let you know for sure... you're delusional. If there's anything else I can help you with, let me know! GAB in the Airless Cubicle (3/1/07) "One thing is certain, the criminally unflattering camera angle makes it appear as if he's appropriated about 50% of the GF's available seating space." You don't think that's real?? Hell some airlines call that Customer of Size and make you purchase both seats. (3/1/07) Some DCRTV Dave Photoshop stuff from donandmikewebsite.com (3/1/07)Dave's response: Ha ha ha! I am deeply honored. I especially like the one on the right. I'm considering it for the top of the Front Page..... Walt in Lewes, along with countless thousands of on-air broadcasters and broadcast engineers across the planet, are eager to learn the name, cause and cure for the human illness that causes computers to crash on-air. I, myself a veteran network news broadcast engineer, today spoke at length with WBOC's Dennis Ketterer about his foibles with his air graphics computer and about the perils of live television in general. We shared a hearty laugh. That's because Dennis Ketterer is an engaging man with a great sense of humor and an admirable sense of perspective. He is a terrific broadcaster, a true professional and a real gentleman -- while it appears that you, sir and or madam (it's difficult to tell as you were too gutless to sign your baseless attack), are the Athole. Walt in Lewes (3/1/07) "this sounds like a "plant" from one of the many disgruntled Red Zebras...as many other postings do. Maybe the troops at Red Zebra should focus on their non existent signal(s) and dismal ratings instead of trashing other stations. but then again, misery loves company." - Fans of Red Zebra have got to love this post. Not only are all of the disgruntled Red Zebras gone, but I have yet to see any of the RZ crew defend themselves on this board, and yes they could be muzzled by Danny's PR machine, but the sheer number of Bonnevillians that chose to do so should alarm the handful of people that are either listening or advertising. The sharp downtrend in WTWP ratings is clearly the result of the learning curve associated with Arbitron's diary system and has nothing to do with Red Zebra or the Redskins. Thou dost protest too much! (3/1/07) I just caught Channel 9's Brett Haber doing a piece on George Michael. I thought that it was very classy. Thanking a competitor for the work that he has done for all these years. Small piece but it was nice. (3/1/07) $20,000 could do so many things the people in the community. Help a single mother, help the homeless, help people in need, then there is always cancer research, HIV-vaccine research, you know, important things in life. Hell, give a raise to the people that work for you. Tons of positions were eliminated in order to cut back operations costs, not to mention all the people on-air who were let go. Where is the logic? Thats right, in your head Jeff. Go on, cater to the needs of your buddies, forget everyone else. Pay $20,000 and to who? What good will it do for your listeners? None. In the recent interview you said, that Kane was killing it. What is he killing? The station? Good luck with the book and to sum up the whole message, you are doing a piss-poor PD job. (3/1/07) You people are so cruel. That shot of Mike O'Meara is no worse than shot's taken of most of us. Let's face it, most of you "critical" GODS have the perfect face for radio. Few are blessed with real good looks. Mike was caught off guard, haven't we all been? As for his lady, I don't think there was any reason to make fun of her. In my eyes, she was kinda cute..maybe a bit young..so what? It's none of our business. Hell, I'm not nuts about O'Meara and his parade of clowns either, but let's not get personal! ANG (3/1/07) Oh these gut-splitting funny Don an Mike guys are doing it again. This Super Dave (hughes) clothing store bit is so so funny. If only I could mimic donnies 'out of breath' fake laugh. (3/1/07) re: photos of djs and their lady friends... Here's a shot of old Harvey Joel Fisher with his MILF. (3/1/07) Dave, Don wants his fans to put together some humorous Photoshopped pictures of you on his website. (3/1/07)Dave's response: Here's the pic. Go for it..... I looked closely at the O'Meara and gold-digger pic. Mike has a nicer rack that the GD. Kudos. (3/1/07) Hey Dave...is that Sarah Fraser from the Stevens and Medley show now on Hot99.5 with Kane??? Just wondering what happened to her. (3/1/07) Dave, I was the first reporter on the scene of the Hanafi Muslim shootings 30 years ago. Someone called WMAL from inside the B' nai B' rith building where hostages were being held. They told us a little of what was going on and asked us for more information (we had none). The WMAL news director saw me sitting in the room preparing for my afternoon show and told to me take a station car and go down there. When I got there, everything was calm. There were not even any police on the scene. I was about to turn around and head back to the station thinking it was a false alarm, when all hell broke loose. Suddenly the area was flooded with cops and I was told to drive the car to the traffic circle and stay there. After a while, police sealed off the entire area, and you were either in or out of the controlled area. I was told I was free (even encouraged) to leave, but if I did, neither I nor anybody else from the station would be allowed back in. I stayed from what I remember to be around noon until about ten that night, calling in reports on the two-way radio. It was not until I heard the report about Maurice Williams being shot, that I realized the gunmen in the building could have opened fire on any of us in the controlled area at any time. I am glad the city is doing something to mark the date. Chris Core (3/1/07) Great picture of king george in hippy dippy orange (sporting a bopping little belly too); he still has those "do you want me to load the hay truck or start the car" eyes. Back to Sinclair v Comcast match in center ring, I'm waiting for SBG to get a good 'swift boot' in their ass. Rot in hell Sinclair brownshirts. (3/1/07) First of all..I was able to listen to the Buddy Dean interview. I find it very enjoyable and very informative! I cut my teeth on Buddy when I was barely old enough to understand what music was! Also want to say that (if I don't have a brain cramp and forget about it) I intend to watch George Michael do his last sports report for NBC 4; I think the thing that strikes me about George is..he genuinely enjoys whatever he's doing! I listened to a segment on Reel Radio Dot Com when he did one of those "re-union" shows for WOGL in 1996..and he just sounded like he was lovin' it; he was that way on WFIL..he just sounded like he was having a ball..and wasn't afraid to show it! Tom in Denton. MD (3/1/07) Lisa Baden had a "Kyra Phillips" moment : Heard this morning on WTOP, her mike was opened a little too early over top commercial break, she's giggling and saying something about "sucking up to (unintelligible) in Woodbridge..." Afternoon plans, Lisa? LOL!! (3/1/07) I was able to listen to the first half inning of the O's exhibition opener against the Marlins this afternoon on 105.7HFS' website. However, it went silent right after that half inning. I guess someone realized they should not have allowed the game to be broadcast for free due to MLB restrictions. -Greg in Perry Hall (3/1/07) Holy crap George… Live long and prosper! (3/1/07) Big Mikey is wearing a Callaway Golf windshirt (you can tell this by the "V" symbol on the left sleeve). I'd guess a size in the "large" range. One thing is certain, the criminally unflattering camera angle makes it appear as if he's appropriated about 50% of the GF's available seating space. (3/1/07) I'm not as keen as Mike in Fairfax is as far as Marc Sterne having a prominent role on the Nats' radio broadcasts. The Saturday show he used to do on WTEM revealed no great insight to the game - it was as if it was something the radio station felt they had to do and he was stuck with it. His interviews produced no real specific questions, mostly glittering gerneralities. I think the bulk of the audience would prefer someone with more than a couple of season's worth of experience, and there's got to be someone out there who meets the criteria. Baseball is more than just the numbers the fantasy guys are interested in. There's so much more to it than that, and I haven't heard Sterne say anything in 2 years that really suggests he gets it on a major market level. Frankly, I think Al Koken "gets" baseball better than anyone over there at 1801. Chris C. (3/1/07) With all due respect to George Michael on his final day at WRC-TV and his work in both TV and Top 40 radio, when I saw that photo of him in the orange shirt I thought to myself, "Gee, I never realized the GEICO caveman had a cousin." -- Vincent in Triangle (3/1/07) Dave, since when do you give a fuck what D&M think about you or the posters on this site? You could suck their collective asses all at once and in person and that wouldnt change a thing! WB Centreville, VA (3/1/07) holyyyyyyyyyyyyy cow . dave that picture of mike and hottie girlfriend is great! it reminds me of that classic line from the Sopranos, when one of Tony's cohorts (i think it was Bobby) squirms and wheezes and wiggles and finally struggles his way out of the car because of his massive carriage.. and Tony says " i think it is time to seriously consider a fuckin salad" ! mike--push away from the table! (3/1/07) You can just hear it is Don's voice today in his retrospective to George Michael. Acerbic George is widely loved, but acerbic Don isn't. Now why is that? You just haven't it earned it, baby, even after three decades in the media business. You can make people laugh at (not with) you, but you can't make them like you. You're still just as clueless as a human as you were all those these years ago. Ponderous, man, ponderous. - DB (3/1/07) Dave please add my name to the growing list of "mailbabaggers" that will miss George Michael. As mentioned in today's fine article in The Post, George raised MBC4's ratings from the dead when he arrived all due to his innovative style and yes, class. I'll miss you George! Rusty Gibson WEBR Radio/Fairfax (3/1/07) A while back DCRTV posted a cool picture of George Michael in his WFIL or WABC radio days with in an orange shirt. Do you still have that available? Thanks. George will be missed. He is one of a kind. Tony Kornheiser did a nice tribute on his show this morning. (3/1/07)"Looking at the big markets, the Woodruff special only came in first place in two of them. In a few other markets the special was a bomb," reports FTV's Scott Jones..... Nice way to describe a special about a guy who got part of his head blown off. Good one Scott Jones. How would you describe a documentary on the JFK assisination that won it's time slot? "#1 with a bullet?" Chris in Alexandria (3/1/07) WBAL is reporting that Sinclair has extended its deadline for Comcast to March 10th. I feel like Oliver Twist, "Please sir, I want some more!" If that's not a sign of corporate BS practices I don't know what is. Standby for the exact same news story nine days from now. (3/1/07) "Hopefully, Mark Sterne will have a permanent role on the pregame or postgame programming " The Nats, not the station, picks the talent for those shows. Marc is working on other improvements at Post Radio, not just the Tony K show. (3/1/07) "Not surprising that she looks flat, after all she has a 350lb load that…….ahhh, nevermind!!!" Yeah the physics involved in carrying out that act are pretty disturbing. Imagine being in the shoes of her parents. Mom. Dad. There's someone I would like you to meet. Honey, we need to talk. (3/1/07) I don't know about Diane Rehm, but when I spray my perfume I can immediately smell it. To me, that would be a good clue that I shouldn't put it on my contact or any where near my eye - Lisa in Ashburn (3/1/07) To the Kim fan, if you want to see more of her. watch at 5:55am when the AM morning crew chats while sitting on some stools. Especially good in HDTV. (3/1/07) If his guest appearances on WTEM's Sports Reporters are any indication, there's no way Dave Feldman can come close to filling Tony Kornheiser's shoes on that station. Kornheiser's new show on WTWP is even less sports oriented than those he's hosted previously, which suggests that not having to make concessions to an all sports format played a role in his decision to turn down WTEM and Triple X in favor of Post Radio. He's clearly obsessed with Fox's American Idol and picks sidekicks who watch that show religiously as well. In the past, Andy Pollin didn't seem all that thrilled about Mr. Tony's lengthy Idol rants on WTEM but had little choice other than to grin and bear them. You wonder if XM will try and persuade Kornheiser to devote more time to sports beginning next week when its Sports Nation channel starts carrying the program. WTWP kicks off its Nationals broadcast schedule on Friday at 1 PM with an exhibition game against the Dodgers. Hopefully, Mark Sterne will have a permanent role on the pregame or postgame programming - for the station to hire him solely to produce Kornheiser's program and play 'Nigel the English soccer fan' once or twice per show wouldn't take advanatage of his experience covering the Nats on 980 for two years. Mike, Fairfax (3/1/07) Dave's response: All I want is a morning radio show that does NOT involve (1) right wing politics and/or (2) "American Idol." Is that too much to ask? Sheesh..... Holy Shit! Big Mike O'Meara's GF is pretty hot!! I look forward to the legal battle that [deleted for being an extremely tasteless remark]... WB Centreville, VA (3/1/07) DCRTV Dave, ain't posting that picture of Mr. O'Meara and his trusted nurse sort of like poking a stick in the bee's nest? (3/1/07) re: "When's the last time any of YOU were proud of a candid photo taken without your knowledge?"---sorry, he could be standing for a portrait & nothing will change the fact he was wearing that green poncho/smock/Halloween costume. Is there a giant Corona somewhere in need of a lime? (3/1/07) Could newspaper subscriptions be falling because of deceptive sales practices? I canceled my subscription to the Baltimore Sun after they tried to force me into the automatic payment. A few months later I found a "special" of Sunday , Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for just $0.99/week for a year with just 2 payments. I signed up and when the invoice for the second payment came they raised the price to $1.50/week. I called to complain and they told me my original deal was no longer offered. I had to ask for a supervisor and shared the date, time and name of the person with whom I placed my original order. Only then did they honor the original price. I have a friend who only gets the Sunday paper and it seems like every billing period they raise her rate. It was really bad when she had automatic billing, the only way she knew what she was paying was when her bank statement arrived. Dirk (3/1/07) Enjoyed hearing how traffic gal Lisa Baden murdered a hamster (complete with a Richard Gere gay joke), on Tony K's Washington Post Radio show this morning. Tell us more, Lisa. - Dom (3/1/07) I spent 8 years working for Clear Channel. 2 years ago, because of financial cutback myself and a hundred others were laid off. That caused some financial hardship for my family. Well today Kane on hot 99.5 announced that Clear Channel is getting Bobby Brown out of jail by paying his $19,000 in back child support. I am disgusted by this and think Clear Channel stations across the country should be boycotted. I guess the morning show will go up in one all important demo, the 18-44 dead beat dad one. How I miss listening to Mark & Kris! (3/1/07) Kim Martucci would have to be the redhead in question on 9, she's the only female meteorologist there. Fortunately, I have an immunity to meteorologists in such matters much being so degreed myself. Falling in love with pixels on a TV screen is never a good idea, anyway. FYI, it looks like Kane/Hot 99.5 really did make that offer to Bobby Brown. It's a hell of a publicity stunt if Brown goes through with this. Everett W. (3/1/07) (CLANG! Ba-da-bum-ba-da-bum...) This is a Fox News Alert. (Ba-da-bum ba-da-bum...) A Florida court has ruled that Anna Nicole Smith is to be buried with her butt sticking up out of the ground. The judge wants mourners to have a convenient place to park their bicycles. HA!! Sssssomebody ssstop me! (3/1/07) Couple of things: Sinclair Broadcasting's ratings would drop to almost nothing if they weren't on the cable. Some people with cable might tune in AI or 24, if they know how. It would upset a lot of cable viewers, but it would really hurt Sinclair. Comcast (not my favorite) should tell Sinclair to get bent. * * * A year ago, I said that WTWP was really bad and shouldn't have gone on the air until they had it together. They still suck, their ratings are embarrassingly low, and I still don't think anyone has a clue about what to do to fix it. This "new" radio station has two signals that should get a 2.0 share if they played Michael Bolten CDs. Don't pick on Dave for trashing them - - they deserve to be trashed out of existence. The Examiner would have a better format. * * * Today Jack Gale goes on the air with a new station and it will sound great. He won't have to make excuses like the brass at WTWP. Jack gets it. Happy birthday, Jack. Ed Graham (3/1/07) Oh my, that mailbag photo of O'Meara and his "friend". That's the best pic ever posted on DCRTV. Looks like the procuction crew at Comcast were having a little fun once they spotted "the big Green Blob" in the arena.. And is it just me, or does that girl look a little flat? Not surprising that she looks flat, after all she has a 350lb load that…….ahhh, nevermind!!! (3/1/07) "Dave...Why on earth do you obsess so much about WTWP? (3/1/07) Tonight on ABC7 Lo-Def News: Color TV - is it here to stay? An I-team special report! Followed by Bill Cosby in the ABC-7 pre-empted movie of the week "Ghost Dad" I think it will be a safe bet they will be the last station to switch their news and syndicated programming like Wheel and Jeopardy! to HD. (3/1/07) "The Diane Rehm story is hilarious. Sure, go ahead and blame it on the airport security restrictions, instead of your own stupidity..." I was thinking of the same thing. Like DCRTV Dave said - use a Sharpie! Duh! Typical liberal - she is blaming things on someone else other than herself. Priceless! Dave in Fredericksburg (3/1/07) (Suggested captions) "I'm so glad I'm out of the public view at one of the least populated events in the area - a hockey game! Nobody ever goes here! I don't think anyone will get video of us." "Uhhh, honey, look..." I wonder if... Mike has lucky Capitals socks like Don does his Packers? (3/1/07) The whole Comcast vs. Sinclair dispute should be considered an insult to every one of us! First, Comcast says that it feels that people shouldn't have to pay for signals that they can receive over the air for free. Really Comcast? I don't seem to remember seeing that "over the airwaves" discount/refund section of my cable bill every month. You seem to have no problem charging me to have channels 2,11, and 13 in addition to 45 and 54. Wow, I'm so glad you're looking out for the consumers (as you raise your rates this month!). And Sinclair, what do you stand to gain by pulling your channels from people who already pay for the ability to watch your channels? You will only lose viewers and advertising revenue by such a move. Note how they "decided" to extend the deadline after 2 am passed this morning. They know what's at stake, but don't insult us! Please solve this before some asshole in Annapolis gets it through his head that the government should get involved in the dispute...yeah, that will always solve the problem! The ten most disturbing words in the English language are "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you." Greg in Reisterstown (3/1/07) "Mike O'Meara's girlfriend, WOW, is she cute or what??!!" I would go with the latter.... (3/1/07) "Damn, that pic [O'Meara] is priceless..." It sure is! My guess, she came knocking on his door selling Girl Scout cookies. (2/28/07) "If Channels 45 and 54 are force to be removed from Baltimore area cable systems, can they substitute DC's Channels 5 and 50?" To answer your question in a nutshell, not really. Unfortunately, the FCC and Synd-Ex rules, ruined everything as far as fun television watching (i.e. superstations and cities close like DC and Baltimore) Although Comcast in Howard and Anne Arundel Counties carry WTTG, albeit in the nosebleed section of the lineup (I know that in Anne Arundel it's Channel 75.) PKB (2/28/07) I'm not exactly on the Al Gore / 94.7 The Globe / Global Warming / It's the End of the World bandwagon here, but I did notice that the person who came up with links to dispute it used 2 references, one 8 years old, and the other 15 years old. Don't you think your material is a bit dated man? At that rate, you'll completely miss the end of the world when it really does happen! HAha! But seriously, I'm definitely in the "Global Warming is exagerated" camp (as is everything in the news these days) and yes, I think we'd be in worse shape with Gore even though I'll admit that is hard to imagine. Keep in mind, regardless of what Hollywood thinks, the people in his own state didn't care enough for Gore or think he's credible enough to be president and they previously elected the man multiple times to Congress. 'Nuff said. (2/28/07) Hey Walt in Lewes. You are either a jerk or don't know what Dennis Ketterer has gone through to get back on television. If they could, that would really escalate the confrontation. -- Carl in Olney (2/28/07) Dave, when will George Michael sign-off for the last time? Will there be a montage for him? (2/28/07) Dave's response: His last regular sportscast on 4 is slated for Thursday. Anyone know more? It was in the Sun months and months ago that MASN was not doing HD this year for either the O's or the Nats, but MASN did tell the Sun that it is in the works, just not this season. Now my question is, how did they decide who (Nats or O's) gets aired on MASN vs. the second MASN for each game? And why isn't MASN market specific for Baltimore & Washington? It would make things a lot easier and probably improve ratings if people knew where they could regularly see either the O's or Nats. It's already going to be confusing enough for most people. Why did they have to go out of their way to make it more confusing? I just don't get it. (2/28/07) ANG- How many are disputing him? I'd like an exact number and a link. Otherwise, I've got to assume you are spinning fiction. (2/28/07) Sister Joyce: 23 years ago yesterday I gave Johnny B an envelope on the outside of it I had jotted down a couple of quick notes about how to be the same guy on and off-air. But inside the envelope I had written down how to do radio the right away according to me ! And just yesterday afternoon he called me and wanted to know if he could open the envelope now. Ya see this is the reason I took him out of Harford County and sent him to his first programming job at a tiny station in Exmore, Va. But he would always find his way back home, Damn it !! All the best to you and your family....I know Johnny has told me a million times that I was often the topic of conversation at the dinner table - sometimes good and sometimes not - Don't even get me started on Mark "T" stories. I'm so glad you guys got into this crazy business it wouldn't be the same without you. Who loves ya girl? "Hitman" (2/28/07) Hey, I don't like Al Gore, so what? As for him and my mis-speak..it was a joke. However, Gore is an elitist self proclaimed global guru. I guess you haven't noticed how many in the Scientific community are starting to dispute his "theory". Popular Vote.....counted for something. Oh yeah, he'd make a great President...hahahahahahahahahahahaha! ANG (2/28/07) (Dave's response: ...And, I don't know if you'd call Tony's ratings at WTEM "big.") AMAZING!!!...that more people don't call you out for some of the uneducated things you write on your website. In fact, I think I saw you in that commercial for ESPN News where the guys are talking out of their ass. Dave, If you don't call being #1 with Men 25-54 between 9am-11am (AQH share, AQH rating, and CUME) "big", then what would you call it??? I'll hang up and listen to your response. (2/28/07) Dave's response: Defensive, aren't we..... This feud between Red Wolf Broadcasting and Citadel has been going on for years. There really isn't any Red Wolf Broadcasting. Red Wolf Broadcasting is just a guy - John Fuller, a 40 something year old white guy who owns New London's Hip-Hop Station Jammin 107.7 (WWRX) and New London's Soft AC Station SoftRock 106.5 (WBMW). Both stations are poorly run and they're the one's that should have their licenses revoked. (2/28/07) How could Citadel choose "corporate profits over the public interest" when O&A get no ratings? (2/28/07) ANG, you may not like Al Gore - though you clearly like to take quotes out of context - but this country would sure be a lot better off if popular vote had counted for something in 2000. (2/28/07) A tribute to a sports legend as he reaches the end of the road in ONE aspect of his career. Love him or hate him, George Michael deserves respect for enduring years in the sports anchor barrel. It's NOT as easy a job as the average viewer at home thinks. The real tribute to him is he, like others such as Johnny Holliday who comes immediately to mind, have been proficient as radio disc jockeys, as well. As a kid growing up in Connecticut, I can remember listing to George NEVER miss a top-40 talk-up on WNBC out of NYC. The classic George Michael talkup effort is to "Why Can't We Live Together?" by Timmy Thomas. The intro is something like 1:04 and he NEVER failed to hit it perfectly. That talent explains his proficiency through the years at NBC4 for never stepping on a sound clips. So, enjoy your new-found freedom, George. Keep up the good work on your specialty broadcasts and try to keep Riggins in check! (2/28/07) Hey Sister Joyce: Can't wait to hear your rendition of Moon Unit's "Valley Girl" the next time I talk to you. B/T/W, not long after my Mom & Dad split up, we shared a house with Al Martino's 1st wife (in Cape St. Clair). I'll also be back on the air on Friday 3/9! (2/28/07) Is the removal of 45 & 54 a temporary thing until negotiations complete or is this a permanent removal of the stations from Comcast? If I can't watch "24", "Family Guy", "The Simpsons", or NFL/MLB games on 45 nor DVR the remastered Star Trek Original Series from 54...I'm calling DirecTV on 3/2! (2/28/07) So Dave, when you visited the Count last week, did he GORE you? Yuck yuck yuck (2/28/07) Dave's response: Former Channel 20 horror movie host Dick Dyszel is a nice guy. Even actually had some very kind words (imagine that) about Don Geronimo, who, Dyszel says, was the inspiration for him to restart his Count Gore personna via the internet in the late 1990s..... [Balto's 45 & 54 Could Get Yanked Off Comcast Tomorrow] No American Idol Results show in Charm City? That'll go over well. Way to play the brinksmanship game Sinclair. (2/28/07) Dave's response: No "AI" in Charm City? Cool. I'm loading up my stuff to move there right now..... Channel 7, really, a two-minute package telling everyone about Youtube last night? Maybe tonight you can follow it up with a story on how Windows 95 works, or maybe you can tell us about this feature you can get in newer models of cars now. Power windows I think they're called? Instead of rolling the little handle you just press a button. Blew my mind the first time I saw it. Neither news, nor even close to timely there guys. BTW, where did Nicole Killian shuffle off to? She was the best reporter over there at channel 8. One of the few who don't look shell-shocked everytime the red light comes on. And lastly, on the shore, as Dennis Ketterer looks foolish with his new weather software, how many of his co-workers is he creeping out these days? Aye, I hate when I get catty. Meow! (2/28/07) In regards to your ridiculous and hypocritical rant today about WTWP. I have to assume that these rants are written by you Dave...and if so, I am amazed at how uninformed you are. first of all, from what I have heard, Bonneville has invested quite a bit of money in advertising in the Post, and it would appear to me that the ads you are referring to are paid for Bonneville and not free advertising from the Post. Secondly, Tony's show is more than a half hour in a "key drivetime period". Let me educate you...AM drive is measured by Arbitron, and purchased by most advertisers, as 6am-10am. So that means that almost the entire 8:30-10:30am Tony show is part of AMD for WTWP. So they ARE advertising their "key dayparts", as you suggest they should! Lastly, you are hypocritical. You have trashed WTWP and it's different hosts and co-hosts (with Byrd maybe being the exception) for most of the year, and NOW you are critical of the station for promoting Tony, which is arguably the single best marketing the station could have??? He is a well known and successful radio personality who has delivered BIG ratings at WTEM and who will definitely bring NEW listeners to WTWP (the only question is how many). (2/28/07) Dave's response: I don't think I've "trashed" any WTWP hosts. In fact, I've praised Burd, Howard, Litzinger, and Kur. But I do think the Post is wildly missing the mark when it comes to using its talent effectively and, especially, in marketing/promoting the station via the print rag and the 'net. And, I don't know if you'd call Tony's ratings at WTEM "big." But the sports talker was able to secure some decent advertisers who are going after that middle-aged male demo in search of erectile dysfunction drugs..... The next time the Post wants to run a half-page ads for Kornheiser's show, I think Tony should be required to contribute a column to fill the ad, like the columns he used to have in Sunday Style. Make him work for his publicity. (2/28/07) To the "Hitman": JJ you are truly one of those great vintage broadcasters that I love to talk about on DCRTV. Johnny B. was so lucky to have you as a PD back in the days of WASA. The craziness is permanent, take it from me. Thanks for mentioning the charm of the Baltimore accent. I have tried for years to totally get rid of it and in the process ended up sounding at times like Moon Unit Zappa on "Valley Girl". I am still working on making peace with it. Buddy Deane's southern accent was very endearing and I still enjoy hearing it on interviews. By the way, the interview on Bob Mathers' ultimateoldiesradio.com is excellent as Buddy addresses the racial issues surrounding the dance show up front and in his own words. Lou Christie mentioned in an interview with me about two years ago that Buddy was integral in promoting "The Gypsy Cried" and was very sad to hear that he passed away. We will keep working on getting Buddy inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Fame. Don't forget to listen to oldies700.net to hear Jack Gale's debut tomorrow. Doug in Bel Air: thanks for letting me know about WNST's web stream. Blessings. Joyce Conroy (WHFC/WYTI) (2/28/07) Dave, it makes all the sense in the world for Post Radio to make Tony K the focus of their advertising. He had decent ratings and a built-in audience on WTEM and they are trying to move that audience over. But better than those newspaper ads are the nicely-produced spots they run on WTOP for Post Radio (for the overall station, not Tony K). Those ads probably reach a lot more people than a print ad in the Post. (2/28/07) Regarding Orioles/Nationals Broadcasts in HD on MASN, Tom Davis mentioned on his Saturday show w/Phil Wood a few weeks back that there are only about 15 production trucks nationwide that are equipped for live HD broadcasts, and that they are rented or leased by individual networks. That was why not every NFL game was available in HD last season. If that's true, that's an additional cash outlay for Lord Angelos, that he isn't going to make, nor, as Dave said, is he likely to get in a battle w/Comcast for HD Channels. Doug in Bel Air (2/28/07) Dave's response: What's it with male radio radio personalities and their on-air bragging about how many HD sets they own? Between the three idiots on the WMAL morning show - at least from their public boasts - they must collectively own three dozen hi-def sets and at least a dozen Tivo boxes. I hear Andy Parks even has a flat screen in his unfinished crawlspace. Sheesh. Radio for couch potatos by couch potatos..... RANT: It's been my experience that most people who work in radio are like me, with a high school education at best who just so happened to land a decent job with a solid paycheck working in an air conditioned, usually comfortable studio, without having to strenuously exert yourself physically, and somedays mentally. Lots of us get spoiled. Unfortunately, lots of us have little other talent outside of working in radio. Lots of us are stuck in a career field that we outgrow. Radio, and being a "deejay" is a job for a young person. You have the following options if you want to stay in "the biz". You can become a music director, and spend hours massaging a piece of computer software called Selector which radio stations use to schedule music that has been tested, researched, and analyzed to adnauseum by corporate programming consultants. You can become a program director who is also known as a "professional delegator" and is constantly fighting battles to keep his stations in the ratings which pleases sales who in turn ruins the ratings by overselling the inventory and over promising results to clients. You can toss out all ideals and scruples and become a salesperson, because the only thing that takes less brains than to hit "auto" on Scott Studios and read a liner card then eat the cookie that comes out of the tube, is to sell airtime. Today's radio sales people are just short of used car salesmen. They have the mindset of such, the personality of such, and they have poisoned the industry with slimy tactics that have turned local business owners off of the medium in general. Some of these slimy slugs become sales managers because they were the best of the best, the slimiest of the slimiest, and because they were actually just sharp enough to know how to handle budgets and cook the books a little to make them look good enough on paper to the general manager. Then you have some sales managers who become general managers. General managers who rose through the ranks from on-air, with real broadcasting passion, real compassion for their staff, and real talent for leading a team to success in ratings and revenue are a thing of the past. Todays general managers are nothing short of slumlords. Their tenants aren't happy, but they don't care because they'll find a new tenant who will put up with the leaky ceiling, the cracked floor tile, and the broken windows. Someone will be dumb and unfortunate enough to live there. Will they be happy living there? The slumlord doesn't caer. That's not his problem, you signed a lease, you pay the rent, you accept the terms of your deal. There will not be any renovations, there will not be any improvements, there will not be any changes made to the property. If you make too much noise, you're out. If you don't pay your rent, you're out. If you disagree with anything your landlord puts into policy, you're out. This is what this business has come to. In radio you add the need to compete with all new mediums, all new technology, all new entertainment choices. We are grasping at straws to create new ideas and gimmicks to get new clients and advertisers aboard. We are operating on limited resources because the talent pool of strong, well-rounded announcers and broadcasters has dwindled to nothing. All the good talent has been forced out due to lack of funds to keep them employed, and the only ones that get jobs now are those who are needy, who have nowhere else to go. So, we accept what's going on around us because there is still just enough love for what we do and passion inside of us to hope it gets better. Sometimes it does, but most of the time it does not. We set ourselves up for constant disappointment over and over again because of our love for what this industry once was. It's really sad. (2/28/07) The only Gore I want to read about in the Mailbag or see run for president
is this guy (Dyszel/Hughes '08)! (2/28/07)Al Gore.....isn't he the same guy that invented the WEB? He's a man I truly dislike. Showbiz....showbiz...name in lights $30K a years worth. He can sure afford the bill. Global Warming, how far back does climate research actually go? Bull doogy......ANG (2/28/07) I am one of many thrilled for Lydia Postlewaite. Lydia leaves WTOP/WTWP Friday to become Director of Communications for Washington Adventist Hospital. I worked closely with Lydia for quite a while and we became good friends. She was especially wonderful to me when I was hospitalized. One of the friendliest and most thoughtful, caring, mature people I'll ever know. She was a terrific editor; cool under pressure...also had more insight into that newsroom than a good deal of other people combined. Instantly likeable; Lydia started as an intern, was hired after graduation and ended up being a real gift to that place. As she leaves; I'm sure everyone will wish her well. But if I were in Jim Farley's place; I'd be wondering out loud how the hell to replace her. To me; that might be the ultimate complement. /sean hall (2/28/07) I, too, don't know what Al Gore's utility bill has to do with radio/TV, but since it was posted I need to reply. Gore's house in Nashville also houses the offices for his and his wife's work, many of the expenses are for security and he also pays almost twice the going rate BECAUSE HE ONLY USES GREEN ENERGY. Nice try. (2/28/07) "And what about the kids classic "El Chavo"? Why the actor who portrayed "El Chavo" is shirley the Carlito Chaplin of all Latin America! " He is knownn as Chespirito, a nickname derived from Shakespeare, because he used to be involved in so much acting back in the day, early in the 1970s before he created "El Chavo del 8" and many other characters that revolved around the show at the same time, like el chavo and el chapulin. As a matter of fact, the Bumble bee man on the simpsons was loosely based on "El Chapulin." I used to watch the show as a kid, back in the 80s. Man, all the memories!!!! (2/28/07) It seems to me that COMCAST doesn't like CSPAN2. Where my friend lives in Connecticut on occasion they'll dump CSPAN2 in favor of the MSG Network, a sports network that they stopped carrying full time in 2002 in favor of the Yankees Network. Marc (2/28/07) Dave's response: Non-commercial C-SPAN2 is a little-watched basic cable (analog) channel and, apparently, doesn't have a pre-emption prohibitation agreement with cable operators like other commercial cable networks do. As long as Comcast does agree to carry C-SPAN2 fulltime, pre-emption free, on its "basic" digital tier, I think that most subscribers (and C-SPAN fanatics) could live with that. By the way, when's C-SPAN going to go HD? Imagine seeing Teddy Kennedy's face in high-def! Oh, nevermind..... Don't ask me to link to it but the Examiner's Jim Williams confirmed last Saturday that there will be NO HD for MASN's 2007 broadcasts of the Nationals and Orioles. Send the protest letters to Mr. Peter Angelos at the usual address. Everett W. (2/28/07) Dave's response: My sources tell me that baseball TV and radio ratings aren't all that great and that MASN isn't going to put a lot of dough into HD gear - and get into another high-profile fight with Comcast to get local carriage of a MASN HD channel. Not this year, anyway. Also, I hear that the folks at Comcast SportsNet aren't all that unhappy that they aren't carrying baseball this year in the DC-Balto metro. They're saving a ton-o-bucks on the rights to a sport that's on a downward ratings spiral, anyway. Hey, don't blame me for "the news." I'm just "the messenger"..... Michael P.: Thank you, and congratulations ! I sent DCRTV Dave and e-mail shortly after the announcement was made. You'll do a great job. And to Joyce and others out of range of the fabulous WNST signal, they do stream on the internet. Doug in Bel Air (2/28/07) "BTW, Gore also owns two other homes, one of which is in DC". BTW, most politicians have more than one residence. A number of people in the Washington area also have beach homes in addition to their primary residence. Now that we've covered this - what does it have to do with D.C. radio-TV? (2/28/07) Okay, I think I've got it now...when the Orioles are on MASN, the Nationals will be on MASN2. When the Nationals are on MASN and the Orioles are playing the same night, the Orioles will be on MASN2. MASN2 will replace C-SPAN2, but C-SPAN-2 will be available on Channel 104...except February which has 28 days...and sometimes "y"...when the moon is at its zenith and there is an "R" in the month provided that the date is divisible by the number 3...and Jupiter is aligned with Mars...yeah, that's much simpler than it used to be! I'm sure ratings will be through the roof this year provided anybody can find the f***ing game they're looking for!!! Oh, but NO HIGH-DEF...that's easy enough to figure out. I give up! Greg in Reisterstown, MD. (2/28/07) Now that comcast will not carry baseball, will MASN have any stations that carry the Orioles and Nationals in HD? I think this was brought up earlier in the year in the Washington Post and I have not heard anything since. I read that MASN had the HD equipment but had not made a decision. Time is growing short and if the games are not being broadcast in HD (when possible) it just shows another disservice to the viewing public in the Washington-Baltimore area by Peter Angelos,(LOSER). Thanks (2/28/07) "BTW, Gore also owns two other homes, one of which is in DC" And this is bad because.....? (2/28/07) With regards to a possible fine of the Univision, I thought "Sabado Gigante" was a kids show? And what about the kids classic "El Chavo"? Why the actor who portrayed "El Chavo" is shirley the Carlito Chaplin of all Latin America! And how about setting up the SAP with english translation for los gringos on the spanish stations? Although, I must admit enjoying watching the Dual Action Cleanser infomercial in spanish. And more Perez Prado and less of that "norteno" crap on the radio............. and speaking of C-Span I was behind a Metro bus today that had advertising on it by C-Span. Why does C-Span need to advertise? And I bet I watch C-Span far more than the average bear. I like watching committee hearings and the faces of people when they don't realize they're on tv. Was that a pick I saw? And for gosh sakes sell C-Span radio, like to american u. so they don't have to be borg like to the towson station................ caught from "Out of the Past" hosted by Lee Shepherd on Fairfax Cable TV Access the other morn and the guest was gentleman Bill Mayhugh. They barely scratched the surface in discussing Mr. Mayhugh's career. Hope they do another hour sometime soon. I'd never heard the Rickles story...and glad to hear Charlie Warren is going to be doing some podcasts. Had wondered what he'd been up to since uber right wing 'mal cut him loose. Maybe podcasts from Mr. Gauger, Mayhugh and gosh even Fred Fiske?...... and so this is goodbye George, was last Sunday the last edition of the Sports Macheen? Did Mr. Michaels trademark the phrase"Let me take you to" and will be taking it with him?....... Man did you see the woman doing the sideline shtick for the North Carolina/ Maryland BBall game. She looked like she might give birth at any time. Sh8t the broads win ! Now even sports can't be fun no more....uh-oh off track, anyways with sports pretty much going away on local tv news, (weather is just a lot more cheaper to fill up the time even if they are b.s. ing most of the time) looks like king george is getting out at the right time. CCCChhhhiiiiiiccccaagggooo! (2/28/07) Last night Dennis Ketterer Chief Meteorologist for WBOC Salisbury, revealed some sort of new whiz bang, super duper. triple whammie, weather software that allows zooming from a wide shot view of the entire East Coast to street level. Murphy's Law prevailed as Ketterer attempted to show off the zoom feature, so much so that he began to stutter and stammer like Elmer Fudd. I'm not sure if it was by design or just dumb luck as the street name revealed and Elmer pronounced Athole Road. It was a classic live TV moment!! Walt in Lewes (2/28/07) Al Gore is a liberal hypocrite. What an inconvenient truth. His 10,000 SF house in Nashville has gas lamps lining the driveway, which burn 24/7, has a heated swimming pool which is always so, and electric gates. These are all items which he indicates, in the campaign of the same name, that others, which would be you and me, the low people, should do without. I guess the Washington Post, NY Times and CNN somehow missed this information in all their research on how we contribute to global warming. The electric bill alone for Palace Gore averages $1,200 A MONTH. Now, if the average home size is 2,000 SF, and has a bill of $100, you do the math. Not only is Gore wasting gas on lights and heaters he does not need, but his electric bill is nearly 4X what it should be for a home of his size. The media should be ashamed to be giving him the press that they are. BTW, Gore also owns two other homes, one of which is in DC. This is not exactly correct, what airs on MASN and MASN2 is not market specific. If the Nationals are airing on MASN2 in DC, they also will air on MASN2 in Baltimore (and everywhere throughout the mid-Atlantic). And the same for the Orioles. Wow that was from what I think 2003, I was driving back home from an errand and Dennis Edwards from WJZ-TV stopped me at the Hess Station in Timonium right past Padonia Rd because it was bad on the roadways...Joyce, Steve, and JJ-thanks so much for your comments, they mean so much coming from radio people who have been there and done it for a long time. Joyce I can only hope to come anywhere close to the great names of Baltimore radio in my own way. If anything I will die trying. -Michael (2/27/07) Simpleton: If Al Gore behaved more like Darryl Hannah in terms of his environmental concerns he would have more credibility. All I see is chicken little. People who question are derided and threatened That is what false religions do as well. See the co-relation? Probably not, as most people on this board are doing the deriding and threatening. (2/27/07) Dave's response: What we're not told is whether Gore's "mansion" is only his home or does it have a business/political function, and thereby use more energy than the typical American home? Context. Oooops, forgot that..... Did Tom Gavin just say "Oh shit." I'm gonna file an FCC Complaint!!! (2/27/07) Michael P. congrats dude....and please never do anything that Dave suggests: i.e. drop the Baltimore Accent, that's part of the charm for charm city my man, and never move left except if you are planning a future in Nascar...Again congrats on the new gig...and somebody should get ESRTV back up and running ASAP, I'd like to send out a couple of yoo yoo's to Joyce C. and Rich D. and to my main man Johnny B. in big Dallas (KLAK) just got off the phone with that idiot, he reminded me that today was the day I gave him his first radio gig 23 years ago, yea thanks for the reminder, radio hasn't been the same since. J.J. "Hitman" McKay (2/27/07) Dave's response: I was just jooooking. We all know the Baltimore accent is rather charming. A la Marty Bass and John Waters..... I neglected to tell the Fox publicity folks that I’m also an old WTOP guy… freelancing as news and sports anchor from 1991 through ’94… during and after my gig at the long-gone Unistar Radio Network. I also did a few weekend update shifts at WTEM in its very early days, thanks to Andy Pollen. RJ (2/27/07) Speaking of old TK-41 rigs, if vintage RCA cameras are your thing, check the web site compiled by Barry Mishkind with the assistance of Lytle Hoover & Chuck Young at www.oldradio.com (BTW, Lytle Hoover holds the rare distinction of having worked on the crew of the Soupy Sales Show!) (2/27/07) Oh, boy, it’s “Robert The Angry Mailman” on D&M! You know what THAT means, boys and girls – it’s time for Mr. iPod! A little Emmylou Harris to eliminate the angry mailman vibes from my office. You know, we’ve all got angry and miserable people in our lives, but I’m not sure why D&M feel obligated to put them on the air. Sincerely, TMU (2/27/07) Al Gore uses more than the usual amount of electricity, so global warming is a myth. That’s the intellectual level of current American political thought, as Bill O’Reilly et al so proudly screeched today. Chrissakes. Next thing you know we’ll be electing a man who’s had his criminal record expunged and has driven multiple businesses into the ground as our president. Oh……wait a minute……. (2/27/07) Dave's response: Ahhh, the righty media. The more they talk about Gore, the less they have to talk about Bush..... Lawsy. That TK-41 must have weighed 300 pounds. And that's the part above the dolly. I remember the very same cameras in the Bozo studio in early 1962. (2/27/07) As always, O&A always WHINE in the end. Aside from being delusional (thinking that they are entitled to their own channel), and bitter (show me one AP or Reuters merger story on that even mentioned them), they have no business sense. They thought escaping to XM would be their savior, that the "tier" pricing would prove that the pests could collect enough lunch money to subscribe "just for them," that they had "golden tickets" that would have value to other shock jocks, that Howard would be irrelevent on Sirius. Payback's a b*** boys and you are about to feel it. Mel's not so veiled comments on the Stern show yesterday are likely to result in an "amicable" settlement with O&A that leads to the skateboarders departure from satellite radio (with a nice little golden parachute, which they should know all about). Then, they can focus on continuing to tank on "free" radio where the dirty little secret that Dave won't discuss is the DLR-level ratings O&A get in NYC and the flies they are drawing elsewhere. They will continue to spin, "stick it to the man" and show how zany they are, but in the end, nothing but whining baby. (2/27/07) It is no wonder that CBS Radio is blocking access to the O's. They know full well that if they don't do something, nobody will be listening to their shows and calling in to speak to the O's manager and coaches when CBS has them on the radio. To be honest, WBAL, despite losing their access, has to be relieved not to have that ratings downer on their station right now. I, for one, wouldn't listen to the O's hence would not listen to WBAL during that time. It will be interesting to see what WBAL's ratings are for the Spring and Summer. (2/27/07) The funniest thing D&M do these days is take calls from their listeners. That and Buzz's news at the end and, yup, it's a wrap. Back to the Batcave. (2/27/07) Geeesh, Sorry I inadvertently named named Fox for re-using footage of teenagers when the question was about channel 4.... But, the practice of re-using footage IS rampant in the TV industry. That was my point. I never said WNT was on Fox - just another glaring example of recycled video. Apologies if you did not get it. (2/27/07) For a great history of AM station calls and frequencies used in the DC area, go to Thomas White's US radio history site: earlyradiohistory.us. According to his charts, WOOK started on 1590 in the late '40s, then swapped with WINX to land on 1340 (WINX moved to 1600 instead and 1580 WPGC started broadcasting at that time). Regards, Dave L. (2/27/07) Is it just me or is there a onslaught of stories, locally and nationally, lately about fat kids and our ''diets''? Your kids are fat loads because you suck as parents and you feed them crap and you let TV and the computer raise them. I'm going to McDonald's and I might chow down on a few bags of M & M's. All you health reporters can't just go to hell! Paul (2/27/07) I want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Michael for grabbing that WNST gig. I had the opportunity to work with him at Great Scott when I launched and programmed JOE FM. He is a true professional and his passion level for this industry is amazing. He puts forth 500% effort, and is not afraid to dig in and get his hands dirty. He has his hands full at GS as he is wearing many hats. I am for one glad to see Michael making the move back across the bridge to his hometown. I know that there is no feeling like working for a station in your hometown. Michael has done great work on the B. I think WNST will be more up his alley, as he certainly has a gift for gab---which is a good thing, just not for Jeff (haha). Michael, good luck, and I look forward to checking you out on WNST.
Steve Clendenin (2/27/07)Some of these mailbag responses are too humorous. One person asks why WRC-4 shows teenagers only below the waist, and someone else explains it's because "Fox" is cheap and wants to reuse stock footage. He bolsters his theory because he has seen it on Fox's (really ABC's) World News Tonight. What in the world has any of that to do with Ch. 4? My theory is that you can't lose viewers showing tight jeans. Also I noticed the heads-up from Arbitron, that 3.4% of the quarter hours are recorded as time spent with satellite radio. How many of the half-million diaries are kept by Satellite radio subscribers? That would be as relevant as anything. Just as TV cable ratings are usually low (but because people are paying for the privilege, they don't need to be high), it's the same with satellite radio. The (approx) 11/28 ratio of sat/ter listening among subscribers says much more, that even satellite subscribers depend on local radio. I'm even guessing that each sa trad listener actually listens to only between 2 and 10 of the offerings available. If XM, for example, offers (approx) 100 stations, and the (approx) 4 million listeners are divided equally and are listening all the time, that is still no more than 40000 listeners per station. What ratings can do for XM and Sirius is help them determine which programs are being only listened to by about 100 listeners at a time and could be replace to keep or gain new subscriptions. To offer one more thought, one difference between cable TV and satellite radio is that Cable TV is practically a common carrier that must choose what set of 3rd-party offerings they will include, since they can't be limitless. XM and Sirius are not at all like a common carrier; they are more like Clear Channel: they program nearly all their music stations and some talk stations. Cable TV is like a retailer, XM and Sirius are like competing dictatorships. The Internet is truly a common carrier of radio-style progr amming. To hear what I want (like Radio Dreyeckland in France, Radio Margherita in Italy, AOL Jazz Vocals, AOL French Classics, some Live365 stations, and certain BBC Radio 4 and BBC 7 programs, to name a few), I make MP3 CD-R/Ws of multiple hours of their programs overnight or when I am out for the day, and then play those in the car. It's cheaper than paying $12.95 per month and getting only half of the music I want and with not enough personality to make it interesting. A piece of software called GoldWave makes that really easy; it even includes a timer to start recording whenever I want it to. -- Carl in Olney (2/27/07) I'm tired of all these old Don and Mike reruns. When will they be doing new shows again? (2/27/07) Dave, Since its my 15 minutes of fame, could you add to the profile that I also worked 2 years at WCEI-FM/WEMD-AM in Easton and hosted a sports talk show briefly at Loyola College. Thanks much. Also the first show (on WNST) is April 3rd. -Michael (2/27/07) Sorry about screwing up the VA guv's name - Martin O'Malley (2/27/07) I like David, Jess, Bob and Hillary on Post Radio. The only problem is when they interview a Post reporter, the answers sound like this: "Um, ah, er um, um, um uh, ah, er, um, uh." Why doesn't The Post get a voice and diction coach for their reporters they expect to sound good on the radio? (2/27/07) Dave's response: While Mark Fisher may be an expert on radio, he does not have a voice for the medium. But, then again, look who's "talking"..... The WOOK I remember was on 1590 and had studios in an old bungalow in Silver Spring (long gone) where Discovery Communications is now. (2/27/07) Nice picture of Willard Scott at WRC-TV in the mailbag -- along with one of the lengendary workhorse RCA TK-41 color television cameras, like this one. (2/27/07)Congratulations to Michael Popovec on landing the Evening gig on WNST. Michael has worked as hard as anyone I know to make the transition from covering radio to actually working in it. He is about as passionate about the business as anyone I have ever met. Plus he is good on the air too. This job is perfect for him. He was born and raised in the Baltimore area, loves all the local teams (and knows everything about them), and loves radio. He will do great...Good Luck Michael!....Rich Drake (2/27/07) Dave's response: Now if only Mike could lose that Baltimore accent and maybe move his politics just a tad to the left..... Thats nice information about Fox and things that young people "shouldn't be doing" but I was talking about stories about school closings, science fairs, football games, etc. (2/27/07) The satrad ratings from Arbitron really come as no surprise. There's tons of listening choices, and a limited subscribing audience. As much as XMers O&A and Ron&Fez bashed "FreeFM" and broadcast radio, as soon as both camps got a chance to hedge their bets and do both XM and FreeFM, they jumped at the chance. O&A in particular seem to deny their relentless FreeFM bashing - now that they work for CBS. Based on past experience, did O&A think Howie and Mel were going to let bygones be bygones if Mel pulls a rabbit out of the hat and he gets the regulatory approval to have Sirius gobble up XM? I don't think so!! I'm no Howie acolyte, but I'm sure he's got a big score to settle with O&A - good riddance to one and all in that upcoming battle!! Weekly DC Radio Highlight #1: The Junkies lamenting the Sirius/XM merger because it will harm their "bargaining power" during upcoming contract negotiations. (Huh!!). Weekly DC Radio Highlight #2: The Junkies pimping "Tahiti Village/Orlando" with washed-up "Married with Children" actor. Sad. The Junks can't pull Christina Applegate **or** Tanya Roberts.... dapjdjinva. (2/27/07) The Newschanel 8 simulcast is a joke that goes back many years in Mr. Tony's show. I guess you fell for it! (2/27/07) Dave's response: Whew! I came THAT close to doing a newsblurb on it..... Heartfelt congratulations to Michael Popovec for winning the talk show host contest on WNST. Michael, I knew you could do it. As a broadcaster, I have come in contact with several young people whether as interns or broadcasting students. You get a sense of a person's character and work ethic usually in the beginning (I admit to being wrong on occasion) and it was evident that Michael loves the business and is prepared to give more than 100%. He put his heart and soul into ESRTV and I know that he will be a shining star on WNST. Nestor, you are very lucky. Blessings. Joyce Conroy (WHFC/WYTI). P.S. Michael, you have to be good because I am usually praising those wonderful, old vintage guys and gals on DCRTV. (2/27/07) Dave's response: All you Eastern Shore radio nuts, we might be seeing a resurrection of the infamous ESRTV here on DCRTV. Stay tuned. Oh, speak of the devil, see below..... Doug in Bel Air-Sorry I could not respond to your kind wishes of good luck a few weeks ago for obvious reasons but yes that was me who was in the WNST contest and thanks much. Looking forward to this great opportunity...Oh by the way Dave we also play 'What's the Frequency Kenneth' on my station here in Georgetown, DE-The B-streaming at www.musicontheb.com -Michael Popovec (2/27/07) Regarding Fox filming teenagers from the waist down, a few years ago I was watching World News Tonight when the teaser came on before the break: "Coming up next, a report on drug use at our universities..." A video, hopefully stock footage or just random footage from a cameraman who liked pretty woman - showed a close up shot of two very nice looking blonde ladies walking to class holding their books and talking amongst themselves. I remember thinking "that is just not fair!". Hence the reason Fox films from the waist down is so they can use the same footage again when doing a story on things teenagers are doing and not supposed to be doing. (2/27/07) Interesting... Drudge Report links on to a story on "Al Gore Responds" to a report his house uses too much electricity. Clicking on the link brings you to a page at MyFoxWashingtonDC. The page carries the headline of the story and all the other stuff on the Fox page - except the story. It is blank! Fair and Balanced to be sure..... www.myfoxdc.com (2/27/07) Did you notice that Bonnevile moved "Ask The ... " from WaPo Radio back to WTOP with this morning's "Ask The Governor" program with Virginia Governor Jim Keane? Guess it wasn't a good fit with Tony The K, huh? (2/27/07) Dave's resonse: That's Tim Kaine not "Jim Keane." So, why not put Mark Plotkin's "The Politics Program" back on WTOP at 10 AM and eliminate the "feud" with Tony K. Also, heard Tony mention something about a video simulcast of his show with NewsChannel 8. Anyone know more about that? To the person who replied to me again, I didn't unwittingly grant you global warming skeptics anything. The 'Chicken Littles' are often hawking a book or something else, so of course they will be somewhat sensationalistic, though I fear that many don't actually listen to what they say very carefully either (i.e. some of them are not so far off from the scientific consensus). What I said previously was, don't believe the media hype or anti-hype without digging a little deeper. I'm a scientist who studies climate change, though I read this site because I was a "DEEEEJAYY" in a past life in the DC region, and I like to stay in touch with that part of my life. What I am trying to tell you is to dig deeper than the posts by the generally uninformed on this blog or other websites (sorry Dave, your forum is great!), or the Fox News/CNN/et al. blathering idiots. Read the science on your own (like the IPCC report). The general consensus now is somewhere between 2-10 degrees Fahrenheit of warming in the 21st century (though increasingly that lower range is being raised). My concerns are not the changes in climate patterns now, though hurricane intensity is undoubtedly on the rise over the past several years. My big worry is the melting of the ice packs on the poles, where temperature increases are currently higher than in other parts of the world. There is a serious danger to the world as a result of that sort of meltoff that ANYONE can see themselves through satellite imagery or through credible media reporting (either caused as a result of natural cycles OR due to human industrialization). Hey, if you own property in upstate New York, your grandkids may get to farm their newly coastal property year-round by the end of the century, so that is good I guess. Guess I'll go back to my cavern and wait for the next signal from the Goracle (cute comeback), though maybe if I stare at the Shrub long enough, SOMETHING intelligent will come out. Still hatin' and debatin'... oh, to tie this in to local media, is the Terps mens bball team getting endless hype now that they DON'T suck? (2/27/07) What's the Frequency Kenneth ... Fall On Me ... how about something really socially relevant? Anyone know the title of that torturous whistling tune used in the Enzyte male enhancement TV commercials? ("Here's Bob. He's livin' large and playing big, because he's got confidence" etc etc). I wanna find out the title so I can locate the composer and make him swallow an entire jar of Enzyte, to punish him for writing and recording that horrific melody. (2/27/07) Regarding Richard Eaton in 1946: I believe it was WOOK, and WOOK was 1340-AM. (2/27/07) Heard it on EITM this morning: A source close to Elliot says that Antonella Barba has already been kicked off American Idol. Sincerely, Mike in Kensington P.S. Not that it particularly matters, but Tony K. said on this morning's show that his female co-host, a.k.a. "my best friend Sally", is WaPo sports columnist Sally Jenkins (2/27/07) “Is it just that I've never noticed it before, or is Jim Vance sporting an earring now?” – From what I read here, I think he’s doing so in tribute to Ed Bradley. HR in DC (2/27/07) Kapugi is there talking about new heights again www.fmqb.com (2/27/07) Why does channel 4, in their news broadcasts, have a policy of filming teenagers from the waist down when they show kids walking to school, coming out of school, in a mall, on the street, or anywhere? Please don't tell me its because of privacy because when anyone is in public they give up their right to an expectation of privacy. They seem to be the only channel that does this. (2/27/07) I don't know about anyone else, but I think Kornheiser in the morning at TWP is a much needed breath of fresh, funny air over at the station. The rest of the day is pretty much a waste of time, especially with the dull and plodding Bob Kur (whom I liked as a network reporter) and that hyper-caffeinated, chirpy Hillary Howard. Rick (2/27/07) "Please tell the industry-paid (or wannabe industry-paid) Rushblow Hanniclones to shut up about climate change" Right-on! AlGore has all the answers. Don't you guys know that? www.foxnews.com... Priceless... Just priceless. (2/27/07) Actually, "Fall On Me" gets played quite a bit on commercial radio. According to Mediabase, 36 times in the last 7 days. "What's The Frequency, Kenneth" was played over 50 times in that same period. (2/27/07) Dave's response: OK, how about "Imitation Of Life." Damn coooooooooool video..... The following was forwarded to DCRTV..... Over the past few years, it’s been difficult to ignore the vast amount of publicity generated by satellite radio, which has raised the question “How much do people listen to satellite radio?” Now, for the first time, Arbitron can bring you that answer! In the Fall 2006 survey we introduced new instructions in the Arbitron diary that ask respondents to record their satellite and Internet radio listening in addition to their listening to over-the-air AM/FM radio. Bottom line: Out of the nearly half a million diaries from the Fall, satellite radio channels had 3.4 percent of the quarter-hours (rough equivalent of share). Remember, there are hundreds of channels, and this is the SUM TOTAL of all the satellite radio listening recorded by diarykeepers. In fact, the Fall diaries included listening to 297 channels. The highest-rated channel had a 0.2 percent share, and the average was 0.009 percent, which is lower than our Minimum Reporting Standards. Satellite radio listeners are heavy listeners to RADIO IN GENERAL. They listen for an average of 33 hours a week to all of radio (including satellite, Internet and AM/FM radio), compared with the national average of 19 hours. Plus, satellite listeners spend more time listening to AM/FM radio (14 hours) than to satellite radio (10 hours 45 minutes). Tomorrow, we will issue a press release on this topic, but we wanted you to hear the news from us first. Sincerely, Bill Rose, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Business Development, Arbitron Inc. (2/27/07) Imagine that you work the 10p -2a weeknight shift on a Top-40 station in a major market. You cue the engineer to start a record, "Diamond Girl". Then, about a minute into the tune, the music stops. The engineer loads another cart, hits the button -- and nothing! Then another cart -- same silence. Ditto for records on the turntable and reel-to-reel tapes. Even the News on the Hour from the network can't be heard. The only thing that functions normally is the microphone! This nightmare actually happened to Jim Elliott on WRC, The Great 98 on January 22, 1974 and you can read all about it and hear the aircheck of "90 Minutes in Ad Lib Hell", here www.98wrc.com (2/27/07) I found this interesting and it explains why ch. 7 doesn’t show their top-ranked syndicated shows in hi-def, even though they are offered to them in the HD format. From TV Predictions.com – “Merv Griffin, the man behind Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, will launch a new game show in High-Definition this fall. The show, Let's Play Crosswords, will initially air on NBC stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Dallas. . . . Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are produced in high-def, but many stations can not offer it in the format because they don't have the equipment to store large blocks of HD programming. The game shows are recorded by the local stations and broadcast at a later time.” (2/27/07) I ain't knowin' whair you got yer learnin' but if you are going to criticalize me make sho' da punkshuation and letter thingys are all put out korrektly... (2/27/07) OK. I thought we were through with Tom Sater. But now that some have “resurrected” him again, let me put in my 2 cents worth. This is a question for Tom. Tom why don’t you tell us what you are doing professionally? I could care less about your personal life, but seriously are you working? I really enjoyed your Fox 5 weather forecast. I thought you were great. Drop your old fans a line here sometimes. That’s all we want. Seriously. Joan (2/27/07) So let me get this straight, due to CBS exclusivity, Orioles management are technically allowed to take calls from Don & Mike listeners (who don't give a rats ass), but NOT WBAL or WNST sportstalk callers who buy tickets and are interested in the team ??? HAha! One point missed in the news headline is that when switching stations, the Baltimore Ravens did not actually impose the same limitations. Anyone know if the Redskins or Nationals have such a clause in their radio contract? And is WTEM 980 restricted too since they are not owned by CBS like Baltimore's ESPN 1300? Hmmm. (2/27/07) "Fall On Me" by REM on the Globe coming into work this morning. That's an awesome cut, and not one you EVER hear on commercial radio. Thought I had Fred on for a sec. Playlist is still sounding pretty good, IMHO. (2/27/07) Dave's response: Heard "What's The Frequency Kenneth" on 94.7 yesterday evening. Maybe they could get Dan Rather to DJ..... The 7 weatherman referred to in the post below was Louie Allen. And as ol' Louie always signed off...."so long for now." (2/27/07) Dave's response: Anyone remember Louie's stick figure weather cartoons? Dave: You are a powerful force to be sure. My last appeal for historic information and person search has been very fruitful. I have learned how kind and interested the families of TV pioneers can be. The latest assist helping me find the family of Ben Wolfe is an example. Not only did I hear from Jeff, his grandson but Marian, his daughter but they know others like Larry Israel and Joel Chaseman. One of my DC findees is not responding,: Victor Guidice, and I sat next to him in the WTTG control room for years. I have not been able to locate, Matt Warren, Harvey Coleman, Sammy Ferro's wife Mary. I don't know what happened to Les Sands. I remember the I T Cohen Advertising Agency with Ike Cohen and Sid Wolfe. I'd like to find them. I have found Arnold Fine's wife, or I should say Bonnie, my researcher has found her. But I'm still looking for anyone associated with WTTG. I'm looking for Diane who did an early woman's show and Elaine Shepard who came along later. I have two good stories about Elaine. Perhaps she reads Mailbag My deadline is October 15 and it'll be here before I know it./to put this book to bed by October. I want to issue an invitation to anyone who is a pioneer with a story about TTG to become involved for full credit. I'm also looking for a Billy Compton, if anyone knows him or anyone by that name. He'd be about 60. To all those who have helped this history writing project I thank you. Keep those cards and letters coming to Gordon Williamson, fsp2a@aol.com or 1400 Moravia Avenue , Holly Hill, FL 32117 or 386-677-2007 Sorry to hear about you weather. It was 80 here today. . . (2/27/07) In 1946 Richard Eaton built a station at Lafayette Circle/ It was AM Do you happen to know the call letters and the frequency? Thanks, Gordon Williamson (2/27/07) Dave's response: Didn't he own the infamous WOOK? It makes no sense to me . . . and I didn't believe it when I first heard it today . . . but it seems that WTWP AM is running in 10 second delay, and WTWP FM is running live. Since they're simulcasting the same stuff, it makes no sense to me that one would be in delay, and one would not. Does anyone from Bonneville have any ideas about this? PS: Dave, great shot of a young and large Willard, and a young and large camera, too! (2/27/07) As of 12:30AM WETA radio has been off the air for 1/2 hr. (2/27/07) Dave's response: Probably transmitter maintenance..... More on the WBAL / Steve Davis / Orioles access complaint in today's Sun...... www.baltimoresun.com... Apparently, it's CBS Radio's Bob Phillips idea to limit access to Orioles management. I wonder if the same type of deal is being crafted for the Nats or if this just an exclusively nutty CBS Baltimore idea. (2/27/07) I had to laugh at the post by Jim Clarke. In the very breath in whch he criticized the spelling and diction of another poster, he misused 2 apostrophes and incorrectly used the word "they" when referring to one person. Nice going! P.S.: Jim, I hate to break it to you, but you weren't all that hot as a PA announcer. It won't be difficult for the Nats to trade up at that position this season. -DB (2/27/07) Maybe you all ought to stick to writing about things you supposedly know about instead of bowing to the Goracle. You all sound pathetic. (2/27/07) The poster who calls him or herself "Hater" unwittingly supports the very point that those of us who are skeptical of "global warming" have been saying all along: that localized temperature abnormalities, severe storms and other "unusual" weather events are not evidence of anything except that the weather changes. Every time we get an unusual warm spell in January (or for that matter, in July), the "climate change" Chicken Littles invariably get on every news interview show they can find and blame the heat on global warming, which is, of course, absurd. They predict dire climatic change consequences and blame everything from Katrina to Califormia wildfires to the Indonesian Tsunami on global climate change. Utterly ridiculous. Even scientists who subscribe to the theories of global warming and climate change concede that the phenomena, if they exist, are limited to fractions of a degree over years, and not to equal degrees over the entire planet. I agree with Hater that local weather forecasters - although they may get one wrong now and then - generally have a better record of getting it right than many folks in other jobs. To tie these two threads together, I wonder if we could get our local weather prognosticators to weigh in - here or elsewhere - with their opinions on the validity of global warming and human-induced climate change? (2/27/07) I came across this gem while archiving: Big Don O'Brien, December 1974 - 1390 WEAM. 19 Years old - Fresh out of Hayfield High School in Alexandria, Virginia. 10pm - 2am. You can hear the old reel-to-reel aircheck machine in the basement start and stop with each mic pop. He even makes a reference to "Louie" the weather guy on Channel 7. For the life of me, I can see him clear as day, but I can't remember his last name... Thomas, you're the expert, what was him name? Click here to listen/download the MP3 - www.bigfatdj.com. More to come from the "Back of the Rack". (2/27/07) /\ February 27 Messages /\ ![]() \/ February 26 Messages \/ I don't know who Jim Clarke is, and I have no feelings about him, positive or negative. Also, the comma goes inside the quotation mark not outside. Maybe "Jim Clarke" should go back to grammar school before criticizing the grammar of other people. -- Bobbie (2/26/07) To the hater interjecter reply... the reason why you were hearing about global warming/weather links from the media when it was warm in January is because the media is filled with people who crave sensationialist stories, and 'oh my, the apocalpyse is coming' sells, though not as well as Anna Nicole apparently (but that is another story). And if you pay attention to the non-sound byte talking head media, you'll see that the global warming 'pandamonium' hasn't died down at all. Get beyond reading one or two newspapers and websites, and listen to more than Faux News or Continous anna News Network and maybe you'll understand the world a bit better. Oh, and by the way, the world is well above average temps so far for 2007, but lets only focus on the U.S. shall we (jingoistic jackasses). Not a sermon, just RATIONAL thought. Before the last "poster" tell's other about grammar, they should go back to grammar school and learn what proper words to use. Funny how some of the posters hide and don't have enough gut's to say who thay are. I guess when you make stuff up, you need to hide. Thanks to most of you for the support. Jim Clarke (2/26/07) Channel 20 has posted their Nats lineup: www.wdca.com (2/26/07) Old school WTOPers, primarily from the Broadcast House days will remember Ted Miller (pictured on the far left). Ted was an extremely versitile announcer/newsperson & worked with WTOP & CBS legends such as Don Richards, Julian Barber, Don Gaynor, Kim Gregory and our dear friend Eddie Gallaher. Ted Miller passed away in the early 1970's, but I can remember clearly going down to 2020 M Street to sit with Ted while he announced "Face the Nation" and then the Sunday afternoon CBS football games while his wife & my mom went shopping. If it were not for Ted Miller's enthusiasm for doing everything from live Tastycake commercials during Senators broadcasts to the network news duties at CBS Radio, I think I probably would have chosen another profession. All this is by way of saying that Ted's widow Emmeline...best known as "Wally"...passed away this morning at 10:45 at age 83. WTOPers would have remembered "Wally" as Ted's great love and constant grounding force. (2/26/07) Many thanks to whoever posted the comment about Capitalweather.com. Pretty interesting site, and the first one I've seen with the balls to put a "confidence level" right there out front, plus a running commentary of what's going on and why, and how and why they could be wrong. SBF in Pee Gee (2/26/07) To the Hater 'interjecter': if global warming/climate change isn't linked on a daily basis, why did we get a never ending barrage of "we're all going to die of global warming because January is warmer than usual" stories? There were more complaints about the job he did since day one than anyone else. Ask the folks who sat in the pressbox how many times a game they'd cringe when he'd blow someone's name or notice a change too late to have made a timely announcement. Easily the worst PA guy in the National League, and I've heard every one. His claim that he found out he'd lost the job second-hand is basically his word against someone else's. When all is said and done, the Lerners will show they've got their act together. My goodness, what they've done pales in comparison to the stuff Dan Snyder did when he bought the Redskins. They were under no obligation to keep Frank Robinson employed - they didn't hire him in the first place, nor did they hire Jim Clarke or the now departed farm system administrator Andy Dunn. They're entitled to have their own people. So, yes, they "no" what they're doing. (Sheesh, Dave, how do these people with such limited writing and spelling skills ever make a living?) (2/26/07) "Can someone tell me why Jim Clarke was let go? He did a good job, had a good voice." Because he sounded slick and phony and did a substandard job of informing the fan of what was going on (double switches, lineup changes, etc.). Many RFK regulars such as myself couldn't stand him. He was no Bob Sheppard or Dan Baker (longtime Yankees and Phillies P.A. announcers, respectively). Clarke will still be doing Potomac Nationals games; perhaps his shtick is better suited for minor-league ball. As for the big leagues, we'd rather have someone with an average voice who knows what he's doing and doesn't insult the spectators' intelligence. (2/26/07) Allow me again to interject some commonsense to shut up the idiots - climate change does NOT equal daily temperatures that are higher IN EVERY LOCATION ON THE PLANET. Further, YOUR weather is very localized. Often with precipitation, particularly strong low pressure systems, there can be significant differences in total precip amount (snow, rain, etc.) within a mile or two range. Thus, you may get 12 inches of snow in the Wild West area, and your friend in Arlington may get two inches, or something like that. Please tell the industry-paid (or wannabe industry-paid) Rushblow Hanniclones to shut up about climate change and the (non-existent link to) weather in the winter. It is NOT linked on a daily basis, but it may be linked in terms of the long-term trends. Now, your local meterologists did screw up yesterday, but do a chart for an entire year, and see how many times they misforecast the next day, or even up to three days out. You'll see that they do a better job than say NBA players shooting foul shots, or stock market 'experts' and their predictions, or George Bush predicting the date of the accomplished mission, etc. JUST SHUT UP AND WAIT FOR THE RAPTURE, YOU MORONS! Sign me, Hater (2/26/07) Rather than listen to a radio show you hate and bitch about it on a site like this, Geronimo would rather you not listen. So, why then does he watch the Oscars, a show he knows he'll hate, and then deliver sadistic humor about the various movie stars, etc. Clearly, people love bitching about things they hate. So crank up the Geronimo criticism here and elsewhere, and tell Geronimo to stick it where the sun don't shine if he complains. If you take away O'Meara's Ed McMahon-ish chortle and Spewak's occasional girly screeches, Geronimo's comedy monologue would be more appropriately truthful with that soundbed of crickets. - Bonk (2/26/07) Tom Sater is like the ghost that haunts the mailbag. It’s no secret that meteorologists are challenged at times to accurately forecast the weather even 12 hours in advance, as evidenced this weekend. Yet, many people are willing to blindly accept as gospel the dire 5, 10, 15-year claims of global warming advocates. If these “experts” have such a good handle on all of this, they should start by helping to produce a short-term forecast we can rely on. (2/26/07) Over the weekend, I gave a lot of thought to "what used to be". I started wondering if there are any teens or young adults that actually know the names of the radio personalities in the DC and Baltimore marketplace? I so well remember Jack Alix...Murphy in the Morning, Harve Moore, Johnny Dark, Jack Edwards, The Greasman (when he was funny), Joe Knight, Bob Raleigh, Davy Jones, Simon Trane, Johnny Holliday..and so many others. I just think it's a shame that radio has gotten so predictable, boring, non communicating and disinterested in what the people really want. I truly long for the days of real radio, real people and real involvement. Record Hops, Contests that were actually fun to participate in....ear candy, unexpected stuff. "Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end". All the "big" personalities of the now are boring, pompous, abusive to their audiences and don't seem to care at all about content. If I could make a suggestion, "BIG" guys grow up, stop with the re-cycled music, bits...everything. If you've run out of steam go away. Does anyone know of of an NBC reporter named Kathleen DeLaski? (I think I went to High School with her). Rusty Gibson (2/25/07) From lots of travel to less populated areas without local TV meteorologists, I can officially confirm that NWS is not necessarily the better forecast. Not that they don't try hard and do the best job they can. I just don't believe they are any better. And it's especially apparent in places that are prone to unusual weather conditions like mountain areas or places prone to lake effect snow. My experience is that NWS is asleep at the switch on these types of conditions and often far off even on the temperature itself in isolated areas. Trust me, NWS has screwed up nearly every such trip I've taken! So I've learned to check forecasts from nearby market TV stations and check the nearest weatherbug temps and average everything out! I usually get the best forecast that way. Anyone who skis in non-TV market areas will know what I'm talking about. I just got back from a trip where NWS was wrong every single day for a solid week, 7-10° on temperature as well as the conditions. (2/25/07) Job Opening at WBFF Fox 45........ Couldn't they bring back Moandy the Sea Monster for this job? :-) (2/25/07) Dave's response: It seems that in the 1970s, Channel 45 (a great source for "Star Trek" back then) spent about half of its time on low-power, which meant it was "black screen" on my cable system here in Northern Virginia..... I enjoy DCRTV. It's a great source of information. I especially like the flashbacks. I am a native Northern Virginian (44 yrs) who just relocated to SW Florida. If we consider the local Washington D.C. news affiliates to be the "Major Leagues" then news stations here in Ft. Myers / Cape Coral / Naples are no better than AA ball. Lots of technical difficulties (ie. showing the wrong video or back drop picture for the story being read, "spellling" errors, etc.) and plenty of minor league talent. I sometimes count the miscues for entertainment value. The stations here make Channel 9 (WUSA) look like all-stars. Keep up the good work. I encourage those that are hopeful for a eclectic rock station to follow suit "I was hopeful when you first switched to "AAA" on the 2nd of February that the playlist would actually increase to something tolerable, and at times it was. Now just three weeks later, you have tightened it again!! You have cut the more alternative cuts from your playlist. What happened to Fine Young Cannibals with Johnny Come home? Or The English Beat with "Mirror in the bathroom"? You are not a AAA, all you did was tweak your still Classic Rock format to reach thirty and forty somethings, and jerk us off in the meantime while still continuing to play the tired old crap from the 60's and 70's and you lied to us with the comment of WHFS circa 1985. WHFS, 1985! Oh really?! I am very disappointed, and angry. I live near Boston, and here, I have certainly have good choices. but I grew up in Bethesda listening to WHFS, and WGTB, and WAVA, WMAL-FM/WRQX, and at times DC 101, what I've seen over and over again is the undermining of Progressive and alternative stations with none remaining in, or near DC and Don't even think of telling me that DC tastes are more conservative, or less sophisticated, or more mainstream than Chicago or Boston! Clear Channel Radio, which operates WILM Newsradio-1450 AM in Delaware, is scaling back its local staff, the company's area director confirmed Friday. www.delawareonline.com (2/24/07) Re:: I normally have more of a life than to respond to ignorant posts, but here goes: I find it very ironic that I bust my ass writing and performing material I know is funny (otherwise I wouldn't do it) while Kirk and Mark left a station where they had a strong listener base essentially to go to another station because of ... why?... more money! And *I'm* the hack??? .....TOM MYERS, the funniest guy I know :) /// Oh Tom, why be normal? No one assailed you with venom. Commentary was made about your "freelance writer" friend, who claimed to be befuddled why two virtually unknown morning deejays who presumably were trying to be humorous, supposedly called you a hack. He then wrote a novella in the mailbag like he was trying right some terrible wrong, or solve a vexing mystery. I think the unified response was a collective yawn, followed by who is Tom Myers? For a guy who spends all day writing funny material, it's a shame you couldn't have shared some with us. Unless it's nonsense which is your forte? For example, what is ironic or analogous about you writing and performing material "you know is funny," and two deejays leaving one station for another to make more money? If there is irony it is unexplained, if you are trying to make some sort of analogy, it isn't apparent. Perhaps they had it right, if this the extent of your talent. Oh, and one more thing, isn't it written in some manual all comics are required to read, that if you have to tell an audience that you know you are funny, it is a sure sign that you aren't. (Hint: It's other people who need to find your material funny, not to take anything away from the all day gigglefest it must be as you "bust your ass" with a pen in one hand and a feather in the other) This is followed by the corollary that it's best to keep your mouth shut and have everyone think you are a hack, than to type gibberish and confirm it beyond doubt. Feel free to steal any of the above without attribution, it appears you need the help. Signed, an Unnamed Poster (2/24/07) Memo to Mark Levin, From Karl, The White House, Greetings, Mark, I want to personally thank you last week for reading those letters purportedly sent to you from families of our troops in Iraq. It is good to know you are still vigorously supporting this war. As you know, The Washington Post and Army Times newspapers and the Government Accountability Office have all published scathing exposes on the ghastly conditions at Walter Reed in the last few weeks. From lost medical records, refusing entry to wounded veterans, the DOD claiming certain wounded were never in Iraq or Afghanistan, to dilapidated infested, and mold ridden buildings, Walter Reed, the Department of Defense and Veterans’ Affairs were all given black eyes over this mess. To have a 19-year-old soldier, who lost a leg in battle, and had a partial steel skull implanted earlier, drink himself to death while aimlessly wandering the campus on New Year's Eve was also an embarrassment. But hey, you go to war with the equipment you have, right? We at the White House appreciate you ignoring the Walter Reed news story on your radio show the last couple of weeks, choosing instead to lambaste Demoncrats, Bill Clinton’s lecture circuit, and reading those emails from families with sons and daughters not yet at Walter Reed. Did you like how we ordered CSPAN’s cameras to be turned off when they entered at our request the Walter Reed campus? We don’t want that visual haunting us, now do we. Anyway, the supplemental funding for the war is going well and your propaganda for continuing this war certainly is helping. Keep sending positive messages to those on the battlefield! Gotta go, another explosion on the outskirts of Baghdad just killed 30 civilians. Best KR. P.S. I am still learning this email thing. You know the drill, destroy this email after reading it. (2/24/07) “www.newsmax.com - Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn has released a pair of bombshell reports on U.S. government broadcasting to Iran” Unfortunately Messer’s. Pattiz & Tomlinson’s (BBG) plan for Britney Spears to bring down the mullahs in Iran will have to wait 30 days while she dries out. Let’s hope the free world survives in the mean time. (2/24/07) "What was Root Boy's golf handicap?.." Sheesh. There's something that I hadn't ever contemplated. I saw him three times, all at the Grog and Tankard in Georgetown. I regret not having gone to see him years earlier and at other venues. I'll bet playing golf with him was fun, as I suspect that the 19th hole began at the first tee. I don't even know how to play, but that may not have mattered. (2/24/07) surprised not to find this somewhere on your front page (it was in monday's washpost biz section). he was at WRC 1987-97. --susan in springfield..... "Media - WUSA-TV of the District named Allan S. Horlick, former vice president and station manager of WMAQ-TV in Chicago, president and general manager." (2/24/07) Dave's response: DCRTV broke the news on January 25, almost a month before it ran in the Post. Check out our News Archive. Stories stay on our Front Page for only two or three weeks before being moved to the archive..... What is the deal with every TV or sports talk station now feeling the need to hire a woman for sports? Are there not enough men interested in or knowledgeable enough about sports anymore? It's getting ridiculous. The new gal at WBFF FOX 45 doesn't even know how to pronounce the name of the Orioles manager, Sam Perlozzo. I would think that at least something as simple and basic as that would be a pre-requisite for the job. How did she get through the job interview? Give me a break! (2/24/07) I was intrigued when Antonella Barba and Amanda Coluccio appeared for the first time on American Idol. If you remember that audition--so were Randy and Simon. When the pair went to Hollywood; Amanda imploded after deciding she'd check out the guys rehearsing next door--rather than continuing to rehearse with Antonella and Brandy, who probably should have moved on but didn't because she, too, imploded. Brandy later accused Amanda of flirting rather than rehearsing. Coldly; Amanda nuzzled up to best-friend Antonella and said something like, "I wasn't flirting--this is business for us...all business (sic)." Ah, but was was the "business?" Singing--or boys? No doubt the Antonella pix suddenly appeared because someone doesn't want her to advance; perhaps the guy whose anatomy is shown in a couple of the shots. Or, maybe, even Amanda! You never know! My money's on Amanda. It proves if you want to succeed in life in today's multimedia world; don't have your picture taken while drunk, on the potty or having sex. As has been said--pride goes before a fall. Is Anna Nicole about to be reincarnated? Needless to say--this week's American Idol should be quite interesting. (2/24/07) "Mikes motorcycle accident" - It just goes to show how little I listen to DnM anymore, I wasn't aware of Mike Having an accident. (2/24/07) Many many years ago there was a young talented fun loving disc-jockey. This man did wonderful impressions, had a terrific sense of humor and humility. This same man started doing voice over work with some of the real pros in the DC/Baltimore area. He shined in the sessions and showed great humility. Predictions were made he'd go a long way if he kept his ego in check and didn't let his abilities shadow his character and personality. Unfortunately, through the years he grew professionaly and shrunk personally. His ego got in front of his ability, thus, Mike O'Meara was created. Such a loss of a wonderful person. MIcheal, mend. Micheal, get a grip. Micheal, get back on the ground, mingle with the real people. You've lost yourself. Such a shame! (2/24/07) re: Army Mounts PR Campaign... do you blame him? The was a typical Post ambush. (2/24/07) RE: Antonella Barba, www.idontlikeyouinthatway.com (2/24/07) A poster yesterday mentioned some of the medical maladies befalling the Don and Mike crew. You left out a few, including Don getting run over in a CVS parking lot, Don's battle with the mumps, Don getting a rash on his scrotum, and Joe's bleeding gums. (2/24/07) THIS is freekin' brilliant. www.nzherald.co.nz (2/24/07) Memo to Chris Core; From a loyal Republican; Head's Up! Please check your fax machine for the latest Republican talking points memo. Included on the fax memo will be your prep for Monday's show. Please review and get the wording right on the description of the current "Democrat" candidates running for, or expected to run for, President. There are some great tag lines for you, including: Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois: "An inexperienced, insulated, arrogant, unabashed liberal." New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson: "A self-promoting, Washington insider with a controversial record." Sen. Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut: "A New England liberal, past his prime, on an unrealistic vanity run for the White House." Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York: "A calculating, divisive, lifelong liberal with political baggage." Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware: "An undisciplined, self-described Northeast liberal, in love with the sound of his own voice." Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina: "A hypocritical, inexperienced liberal with a new negative attitude." Since the Talking Points memo was sent before Tom Vilsack announced he was stepping down from the race, his tag line included in the memo is not a priority any more. Thank you, looking forward to Monday's show, and you are a "Great American." (2/24/07) For folks who TRULY miss the spontaneity of live radio, go to the WMET website and download the Greaseman Show 7AM hour from Feb 22. Grease is doing a live commercial for Penny Talk, a low-cost long distance telephone service, and nothing is going right. Not one call is going through as planned. The automated operator drives him crazy with prompts, phony politeness, and the bad news that the numbers are not in service or are incorrect. After several attempts, he ends up shooting the telephone, but still remembers to read the payoff line and complete the advertiser's message. Classic Grease, and an eight-minute commercial for Penny Talk. Retrieve the file at www.1160wmet.com, select the file called 2007_02_22_07A.mp3 and start playing at the 35:44 time marker. -Lou Kadishe (2/24/07) Regarding AOL and their cache: To clear the cache and get from the source, hit CTL F5. This works in both IE and Firefox. Oh, Get Firefox. There is no excuse. Good day. (2/24/07) I miss Tower Records. I miss Weasal in the evenings, especially the boxed sets. I miss the 'Bama. What was Root Boy's golf handicap?..On thursday the sports reporters on wtem played the famous Lee elia rave out tape. Is Mr. Elia with the Oriole's this year?...Jimmy Kimmel said the other day "When did folks stop being embarassed about stupid things they do?" The Kathie Lee Gifford's were on Kimmel show Friday night. Cody is now a strapping 6 foot 1 and said something like he was coming to kick Don's arse!....Apparently, Kathie Lee has written a play and it apparently will be at the Signature theater(?) in Shirlington, Va. in early April. And I think Gallagher is funnier than Tom Meyers. But Tom Meyers is funnier than Carrottop. I'm Larry Williams. And good night Alice Sweet wherever you are (2/24/07) The Voice of America is always going to be a political football, because in the minds of most politicians, "international broadcasting" is the same as "propaganda". However, often the best propaganda is the truth. It can be subtle, and not heavy-handed. I've seen conservatives angry that Democrats are on VOA programs, failing to see that it's a very subtle way of reminding foreign listeners that in the United States, being in the opposition doesn't guarantee silence and a jail cell. Both Fox and CNN would be terrible choices to control VOA operations. If they want an international presence on shortwave and medium wave, they can build their own stations to broadcast overseas. -- GAB in the Airless Cubicle (2/24/07) /\ February 24 Messages /\ ![]() Jump to the Mailbag Archive Index..... ![]() |
