D.C.'s Top 40 powerhouses during the sixties were WEAM (1390 AM), whose nighttime signal north of Bethesda was poor (WINX in Rockville served the Top 40 role for central Montgomery County) and WPGC, an AM daytimer also heard on FM. Washington never really had its equivalent of WABC, WMCA or pre-all news WINS in New York, WFIL or WIBG in Philadelphia, WCFL or WLS in Chicago or KFWB or KHJ in Los Angeles. -- Vincent in Triangle (2/11/07) OK - Eveybody knows Ron Smith/WBAL is retiring this spring, probably right after the Book. BAL ran a Stealth ad on AllAccess for his replacement. Local speculation was Bruce Elliott was the "air apparent". Is the ad just for HR appearances? Is Beauchamp REALLY looking outside the market this time? Is Elliott out of consideration? What about Alan Prell? Just because he was fired.......... What about Brian Wilson? He was Smith's replacement forever? Just wondering. Elaine (2/11/07) Dave's response: Really? Is it true Smith's retiring? One of the area's talk radio greats. Anyone know what Prell is doing these days since his Denver and Seattle talk radio gigs? Is he back in the area? ("All the Glenn Brenner clips have been pulled for copyright reasons.") Actually, the Glenn Brenner clips are still available on YouTube. They're just under WUSA's official channel now. www.youtube.com... I suspect that WUSA did go to YouTube and tell them that they are the copyright holder of the clip, but then decided to just take ownership of the clips and put it on their channel -- as by then they were already posting recent clips and ads to the site. -- Wes McGee (2/11/07) Well it looks like the weakness of Youtube is starting. All the Glenn Brenner clips have been pulled for copyright reasons. I guess that's part of Viacom insisting upon the removal of 100,000 clips from youtube. Is the party over?.....ah just ran a piece on old Cole Field House during halftime of the Maryland vs. Duke game on Comcast. The tears on my pillow....I sure miss that place (2/11/07) …And the Washington Post wonders why they have become irrelevant. Most people get the paper just for the ads (and line their pets cages). I, for one, would rather get my ads via direct mail (that might keep the post office in business!!!). Don in VA (2/11/07) I hope I really didn't hear Andy Pollin use the racial slur..."schwarze"...on Friday! Maybe racial slurs sound better in Yiddish! There goes his Senate run! Certainly an apology is due! According to the URBAN DICTIONARY: A german word meaning "black", but was incorporated into American Jewish slang to be a derogatory term towards black people. The AQH listener (2/11/07) Whats the difference in coaches who recruit white players, who don't play, as opposed to recruiting 12 black athletes who can play? Coaches job: win games. Did John Thompson do that? Yes. However, watching the game between Patrick and Sampson at Cap Centre which was on the other night, Georgetown had no less than THREE white players... THREEEEEEEEEEE.. Kurt Kaull, David Dunn and another player whose name escapes me at this point. Im Sure if you look over many college programs, Georgetown wasn't the only program who may have had a roster of all black athletes at some time. I'm all for free discussion of all sports topics but to say Coach Thompson and his great staff of asst's through the years, didnt recruit white athletes is absurd. As a long time Hoya fan, I've read for years the distain some people have for Coach. What he did for his players off the court was as important as any thing he ever did on the floor. We judge people on their contributions to society. John Thompson made the lives of many people better. Period. Pete Medhurst (2/11/07) I read your blog with great interest. Congratulations on breaking so many stories before the mass media - one story of particular interest to me was the WGMS/WETA flip. Do you have any information on where the majority of the on-air staff landed? I know John Chester is on WETA (hurray!), but what of James, Chip, Renee, and the others? Thanks, Al & Carol Secen (2/11/07) Dave's response: Anyone have a complete list of the DC WGMSers who made it across the Potomac to Arlington's WETA-FM? We know that PD Jim Allison and John Chester made it..... "Interestingly, I think I read somewhere that Maryland no longer has hardly any real Baltimore Oriole birds anymore, I mean the REAL birds..." You're double negative is saying that Maryland has plenty of real Oriole birds then? My suggestion: English 076- English for Trailer Park Conceptions. BTW, Allan Etter still sucks. Ask the firefighters their opinion of this sell-out. (2/11/07) "So WTOP, billing $30 million or more, might only bring $150 million." Based on 2005 revenue figures (the most recent I've seen, not working for Bonneville), WTOP probably bills closer to $50 million, which would put its value in the $250-$350 million range. (2/11/07) "So WTOP, billing $30 million or more, might only bring $150 million." You are WAY low in their billing. They are # 1 i n the market in billing. (2/11/07) First of all, with respect to the moderator's comment, no Redskins fan wants Danny Boy MORE involved in the Redskins. The more amusement parks, radio stations and burger joints he has to play with, the better for the team. Second, Wise's Thompson article is nothing but a puff piece. Where were the questions about his refusal to recruit white players regardless of their abilities, the alleged gambling connections in Vegas and the reasons for the bizarre timing of his retirement at Georgetown? Thompson won't let callers through on his radio show if they want to ask about any of those topics. (2/11/07) To the guy who says the attention paid to McRosenberger here contracts the notion that he sucks – ever noticed that people slow down and pay attention to car wrecks? Have you noticed the attention now being paid to the death of Anna Nicole Smith? Does that make her talented? People noticed the explosion of the Hindenberg. Disasters draw attention. Particularly self-promoting, total-lack-of-self-awareness disasters. Sincerely, TMU (2/11/07) To the poster with the question about the Parade magazine printing date, that is printed 2-3 weeks before the actual insert date. As someone in the insert printing business, newspapers require the inserts for a Sunday issue to be delivered 9-11 days prior to the issue date, so you back the production out from there. (2/11/07) Will someone please explain to me the significance, if any, of 94.7 The Globe hiring an ex Clear Channel as an interim PD? What's the point? They have Michael Hughes as GM, and Cerphe and Weasel, and certainly many other AAA programmers in the region to choose from. By the way, the Ad Council PSA's are identical to the ones that Clear Channel Boston's Air America affiliate used in lieu of commercial advertising for two years before they went Spanish. I listen to the Globe on the web, so the spots so truthfully I can't tell if their is a healthy spot load yet. All I can say is if the Globe wants to be listenable, Green, and Eclectic in DC then the programmers, and sales force needs to be a bunch of street fighters. It's time for WNRN( Progressive broadcasting) to re-visit the area. (2/11/07) Dave's response: Hey, I heard Garbage's "Happy When It Rains" on The Globe this afternoon. Followed by Blondie's "Rapture." Heard The B-52's "Rock Lobster" yesterday. Oldish, yeah, but so cool..... Tony Kornheiser ESPN Monday Night Football "Korny on a Stick" Mask (Spotted on eBay) (2/11/07)"Yes, that's Stash on the (Flashback) picture, with Ozzy."- and IYY APD/MD Rob Heckman on the far left. He's been there for over 10 years now. You won't meet a nicer person in the biz. (2/11/07) Folks in the DC market: What does WTWP/Washington Post Radio run on early Saturday mornings (6 AM)? I've been trying to listen to the web feed the past hour or so, and they're running the same six promos/announcements/commercials over and over again, including a car dealer spot for an Acura dealership ("Hi, it's me, the radio guy", featuring WJFK-FM's Buzz Burbank not identifying himself on the competing station)... it's frankly getting rather annoying! What's on 107.7 FM/1500 AM that can't be aired online? I know David Burd isn't on Saturday mornings anymore now that he's moved to weekday morning drive, but SOMETHING has to be on! (2/11/07) "After 2002, most groups changed this formula to between 10 and 15 times cash flow, and between 5 and 7 times revenue." So WTOP, billing $30 million or more, might only bring $150 million. I used WNIB as an example since it was going to be immediately flipped away from classical and any "good will" or prior billing record was valueless. (2/11/07) just heard clay anderson on abc7, jamie (2/11/07) Regarding an indoor climate change concert: While the previous poster failed to distinguish between a telephone service and a car manufacturer, I guess I need to clarify my previous post about possible venues. It appears the date of July 7th is taken at RFK by a Nats game... So Verizon Center it is - unless the term "Washington,, DC" is not taken literally. I would bet it will be FedEx field in RalJohn (Landover). Noteworthy though, Verizon Center is dark most of the summer months except for the Mystics, Eric Clapton when he tours, and a couple of misc events. Nissan appears to be unbooked as of now. Wolf Trap has the Mountain Stage Radio Show that day - a shame because this is a show I wanted to see. Will Danny give them the stadium for free like Philadelphia or Foxboro would probably do for this type of event? (2/11/07) How many weeks ahead of time do they produce and print "Parade" magazine in the Washington Post? Check out question #4 in today's "Personality Parade", horsey fans. (2/11/07) Nothing like employees of a station trying to prop it up. WCEI is WASH-FM with small market jocks and low budget spots. unless they drop the AC that is heard everywhere else with something of worth to the area, they will always be a nowhere Easter Shore po-dunk station. Seriously now. Even their syndicated stuff like Delilah is heard elsewhere. (2/11/07) Yes, that's Stash on the (Flashback) picture, with Ozzy. (2/11/07) There 's no Glenn Brenner wikipedia entry tinyurl.com check out the WKYS audio of Brenner and Peterson, what a pair of cut ups ........ I see dcrtv is having it's annual meeting of the Hot Stove League in the old mailbag.... Federal league indeed..... and speaking of the Oriole Way a mention to the passing of Steve Barber and Hank Bauer during the past week....... the ghost of Wee Willie Keeler.... whatta mean you don't play two no more! ........ is Warner Wolf really related to Abe Lincoln? (2/11/07) “In 2002, classical WNIB-FM Chicago sold for $168 million. I don't think prices have come down since.” Actually they have. Not be cause the real-dollar value of the asset has decreased, but because most of the major broadcast groups changed the formula by which they value their properties after the “down” year of 2002. From the mid-90s through 2002, most top-10 market stations were valued at close to 20 times cash flow (which is essentially “profit”) or 10 times revenue. Based on that formula, a station like WTOP would have been valued at nearly half a Billion dollars. After 2002, most groups changed this formula to between 10 and 15 times cash flow, and between 5 and 7 times revenue. That Ozzie (not Yoko) with some 98 Rockers, including Stash (I think)..... "To the unsigned poster: You are absolutely correct! After the Orioles changed their name to the Terrapins, they jumped the soon to be defunct Federal League and moved to New York and became the Highlanders." You are incorrect, sir! Here's what happened with Baltimore's teams: after the 1899 season, the NL decided to whittle itself from 12 to eight franchises (it could do this because of a little thing called "syndicate ball," where owners could run more than one franchise). Teams in Baltimore, Washington, Cleveland and Louisville (all of which were by then "weaker sisters" in syndicate ball) bit the dust. The American League, an outgrowth of the midwest-based minor Western League, announced its promotion to "major" status in 1901, and one of its eight teams moved to Baltimore (another moved to Washington). That Orioles franchise was shifted to New York in 1903 as the Highlanders, later the Yankees. There was a Baltimore Terrapins baseball team in 1914 and '15 that played in the Federal League (going head to head against the International League Orioles when Babe Ruth played there). The FL folded after the 1915 season. -- Vincent in Triangle (2/10/07) "He was like a tiny squirrel in the forest who starts a fight with a bear – shocker, the bear ate the squirrel, and McRosenberger is now violating intellectual property rights by playing tunes at a freakin’ MCDONALD’S. Is there a lower rung on the evolutionary scale?" Yeah TMU, there is. It consists of the people who sit around obsessing about the people they consider the lowest rung on the evolutionary scale. If he's so bad why talk about him so much? You, like Don, are strangely obsessed with PR. The fact that you and don and legions of PR haters talk about him on this board so much WHEN HES NOT EVEN ON THE AIR ANYMORE totally contradicts your mantra--that he sucks. People don't waste so much time on stuff that sucks....Or its also conceivable that you and all these folks are such brainless sheep that they will do anything to gain that talentless bottomfeeder Don's attention. Neither possibility is particular flattering. (2/10/07) The original America League Baltimore Orioles existed for the 1901 and 1902 seasons The team moved to New York to become the New York Highlanders in 1903 (later the Yankees). Baltimore reverted to minor league status until the St. Louis Browns moved to Charm City in the early 1950's. Al McGilvray (2/10/07) To the unsigned poster: You are absolutely correct! After the Orioles changed their name to the Terrapins, they jumped the soon to be defunct Federal League and moved to New York and became the Highlanders. Whom are now known as the New York Yankees and joined the American League. The "modern" Orioles came to Baltimore (via St. Louis Browns) after many 11th hour meetings with then Baltimore Mayor Tommy DeLesasAndro, M.L.B. & St. Louis Officials. To this day, I still wonder if Chuck Thompson sat in on any of those meetings. Some interesting history there for those that would like to dig deeper. Rusty Gibson (2/10/07) How much to buy a good 50kW FM in the DC area? I'd guess that up to $100 million would be a good start. In 2002, classical WNIB-FM Chicago sold for $168 million. Here's the other half of the story... The Orioles roots also go back to 1890 as The Baltimore Orioles of what became the National League & were named after the state bird. What became of that team though you ask? Ahem, they are the New York Yankees from 1901 and ever since. By the way, the Redskins were originally in Boston. Interestingly, I think I read somewhere that Maryland no longer has hardly any real Baltimore Oriole birds anymore, I mean the REAL birds (yeah, you thought I was joking about the team, I know hehe). And it was just in the Sun that Terrapin turtles are becoming endangered. What does this have to do with DCRTV? I have no clue. :-) (2/10/07) Here's the only two ways I can imagine how Rosenberg could get back on the air: (1) Take a 2am-6am shift on a 10-watt AM station in Nowheresville, Antartica, or (2) Become talented and listenable. If I had to choose I'd guess #1 is the most likely of the two, but what we all know will happen is that he'll get a job in a mailroom somewhere and exagerate his talent to the other toothless losers he works with. Now can we please get back to talking about people WHO ACTUALLY WORK IN THE BUSINESS?!?............... that said, I had to laugh at this comment: "Having an indoor concert for the environment is retarded." Why is that? Are you under the impression that everyone who is concerned about the environment lives in treehouses? I'm pretty sure employees of the Sierra Club, National Geographic--hell, even Jane Goodall--have been indoors and --Gasp!--might even have offices and use electric lighting. Shocker. Being conerned about the environment doesn't mean you pretend civilization doesn't exist. Dumbass. (2/10/07) Clay Anderson now with ABC7 Weather on WTOP - I didn't see anything in your excellent column about this but you had to have known. (2/10/07) Dave's response: We did report that the former Channel 4 weatherman had jumped to Channel 7. And now with Channel 7 replacing The Weather Channel as WTOP's 24/7 forecaster, it is logical to assume that he'll also be heard on WTOP..... To Tom Conroy: Yes, 96-7 WCEI moved their radio towers from their studios on Port Street in Easton to Chesapeake Community College, so their 25,000 watt signal does get into Baltimore and DC even stronger than did it before. I believe they lowered power but raised height but on the sliding scale of height and wattage it still of course comes out to 25,000 watts. Height over wattage is always key anyway. Yes they do a nice job of on-air presentation. From PD Matt Spence to GM Stacy Monz to Owner Alex K they run a great place, having gotten my start in radio with them in 2004 and working there until the summer of 2006, I have nothing but great things to say about them. I really enjoyed my time there. I am fortunate to now also be working at a similar place...The station that was interfering on I-70 with WCEI was 96-7 WQCM licensed to Halfway, MD, I believe they are Top 40. I have picked up WCEI as high up as Taneytown, MD at times and that was before the move. -Mike Bradley (Afternoons 2-7pm-The B-Georgetown, DE) (2/10/07) "it would mean RFK or Verizon, not a stadium in Landover, Raljohn, Md or heaven forbid Baltimore -" Last time I checked, Verizon was around Manasass. That's not in DC. FedEx is the biggest facility in the area and closer to the district than Verizon. I guess you failed geography. Bryslock (2/10/07) Dave's response: The Nissan is near Manassas. Verizon is the old MCI in downtown DC. And then we got this.... I must make a correction. I was thinking of Nissan and confusing it with the other former garbage dumps name Verizon. I never thought of the Verizon Center because having an indoor concert for the environment is retarded. Bryslock (2/10/07) Re: Media Goes Crazy Over Anna's Demise - Anna who? (2/10/07) DCFEMS = DC Fire and Emergency Medical Service (2/10/07) Dave's response: Darn, I thought it was a transvestite group..... How much money does it cost to buy a good 50,000 watt FM station? Damn, radio sucks so bad around here that I feel I need to buy one and program it myself to get the job done right. I hate all the cookie-cutter Limbaugh wannabes cluttering up the air. The music playlists are too tight on all the music stations. All the non-political personalities have no personality. I like to listen a lot of different things. The only thing I can stomach on D.C. radio anymore is WPFW because the dj's play an interesting mix of blues, jazz and soul. I like the idea of The Globe, and the old WHFS jocks. However, I listened to it and the playlist is too tight for an alternative station. No real surpises there, just old Talking Heads, and like-minded bands. I would be a lot bolder and play a lot more diverse music with my own station. Maybe people don't want to hear it and want canned nonsense like they already have now. I'd be willing to find out the hard way if I could afford my own station. John in Stafford (2/10/07) Re: Original names of Baltimore teams - the Orioles trace their roots back to the 1901 Milwaukee Brewers, who moved to Saint Louis for the 1902 season. "Baltimore Brewers" would have been an appropriate name since one of their major sponsors was a beer company, and Camden Yards sits on the site of the tavern owned by Babe Ruth's father. Al McGilvray (2/10/07) (RE: WGMS) I forgot to include the name of the website stage-wgmstest.bonnint.net (2/10/07) 980 is puzzling. they r changing lineups but adding nothing new. What they need to do which may help is go local at least all from 6 am to 12 midnight. THey have talent there, Frank Hanrahan does a great job with Caps and it seems like he could easily do a night program insted of Fox Sports. Or go with scott Linn. They r probably just too cheap to add people. Not a sermon just a thought. Dan (2/10/07) Why does "The Globe" remind me so much of shortwave station WBCQ when it started? -- GAB in the Airless Cubicle (2/10/07) Dave's response: I think I've figured it out - 94.7 is classic rock for Democrats and 100.3 is classic rock for Republicans..... Why is it "inevitable" someone will give Rosenberg another radio gig within the lovely metro area? Hasn't he already flamed out from his two most likely local employers? I hate to pile on this sad sack, but he keeps clamoring for attention. DJing at McDonalds leads to two assumptions: first he can't get a gig at a regular club, or he will sink to any depth to glean attention. Hopefully the latter is true, because there is nothing wrong with being a club DJ. Now, polite applause because Rosenberg is "trying to make a living." I do feel comfort in knowing this, but I will bet one back hair shave this guy never sees the light of the graveyard shift at any local radio station, barring an outbreak of bubonic plague. This guy should be in some tiny market in the sticks, cutting his teeth, plugging his schlock, and trying to develop a cogent act. He was college radio in a market whose listeners expect better on their big time talker stations. He wanted to talk politics, but didn't even know the basics of what is taught in a beginning level government or political science course. His own views and logic were routinely destroyed by callers. His radio side kick was absolutely no help, as he seemed less informed than Rosenberg. What Rosenberg does know about is so niche it was never enough to carry or entertain an audience for hours. Add to the mix an arrogance about his own meager abilities, which is why the haters here take glee in kicking a guy when he is down. But I sense Rosenberg has a layer of cerebral fat that insulates him from such self-awareness, which is why I feel no guilt in taking my potshots. I remember one tortured snippet from his radio show, where he spent 10 minutes telling the audience how funny he was, without an apparent clue that having to make such public statements only disproves the claim. In the 7-8 hours TOTAL I listened to Rosenberg I don't remember one funny moment, nor one that could be construed as funny. This guy's show was a disaster on so many levels, that the masochism and self humiliation of letting someone write a story about you working at McDonalds...err for McDonalds cannot be ignored without comment. They say you have to hit bottom before you can rebound. Luckily for old Rosenberg there is only one way to go, and that is up. (2/10/07) This talk about the Post with Wilbon & Kornheiser. If I recall correctly, when the Post offered early retirements/buyouts a year or two ago, Kornheiser said that he requested to take the buyout. The Post management declined and at the time it was thought that TK would return to a larger role in the columnist world. Of course he ended getting MNF so that didn't work out. According to the Washingtonian article, it appears that Wilbon offered his resignation to the Post when he signed the ESPN contract. He was also denied. While I have not worked in the media biz, it might be a larger marketing ploy that may positively affect earnings of the Post without real measurement. Think about it. When any columnist/reporter goes on ESPN, Fox News, etc. and works for another news organization, they say, "Michael Wilbon, ESPN NBA Analyst and Columnist for the Washington Post". The Post gets "free" advertising. If I find the columnists opinions interesting, I may go to their website, driving up page hits, or I might go buy their paper. As for losing columnists, certainly columnists on staff can step up, but that can also mean that the Post can hire new columnists. I'd be interested in learning if TK & Wilbon are still being paid their full salaries at the Post. Likely, it's more that they are paid a portion of their original salaries, but retain full-time benefits. With that, I would not be surprised if they hired a recent buyout volunteer from another paper. Last fall, Kevin Blackistone of the Dallas Morning News took a buyout and is currently seeking a media job. He has been on ESPN's Around the Horn for the past two weeks or so and broadcasting from the ATH/PTI studios in DC. He's from the area and comments regularly on DC area teams, even though he was writing for another city. Maybe he is in town trying to pick up a gig? TL (2/10/07) I’m trying to imagine how low you’d have to get to be jealous of Peter McRosenberger and his hot, happenin’ gig spinning tracks at Mickey D’s . . . . the guy who scoops up elephant crap at the circus? A dishwasher at O’Meara’s? The mind boggles. Sincerely, TMU (2/10/07) RE: [ " Did anyone get the impression that Don was having just a little too much fun this week with the death of Anna Nicole Smith despite the recent events in his life? Stern did apparently) even before going to the hospital or seeing her body??? Dave..... mean-spirited hateful mailbag comments with no taste like this one should just not be allowed. By the way, Don & Mike and Saturday Night Live really shouldn't have to do any skits on Anna Nicole Smith. Why bother? What could they make up that hasn't already happened? When CNN is funnier than SNL and Don & Mike, isn't that the sign of the end of the world ??? (2/10/07) Regarding Peter Rosenberg's gig at a McDonalds: if the City Paper story is true, he was asked to come in and spin the tunes, and if he's making that kind of money, well he's welcome to it. For that Mickey D's, it might work, as they hope to bring people into the place. Rosenberg is doing the high-profile (I guess), look-at-me gigs in the hope that someone will give him another shot on the air. Inevitably they will. Now, pushing 30, Rosenberg still hasn't really found his place, and that's not unusual. Quite often, you go years in the radio biz paying your dues. He got a good shot at JFK, but wasn't ready for it. I give him credit for trying; it may seem like a form of prostitution for some of you, but the man is at least trying to make a living. So, will all you Rosenberg haters be making a late-night trip down to the "club," to harass Rosenberg and demand a certain request so you can rub your crotch against your girl while waiting in line for your McNuggets? Hey why not call Don and Mike? I doubt they'll be doing anything that time of night. The RCL (2/10/07) “I get the impression that WaPo don't think sport's columnist ain't important no more.” During baseball season, Boswell does a weekly e-mail column and a weekly chat in addition to his occasional printed columns. Wilbon also does a weekly chat year-round and has hinted he might have to do a blog. The Post just started posting video of him and Kornheiser doing their arguments in the Post newsroom. All the beat writers have blogs and chats, and this guy Steinberg basically writes a column all day long as a blog. Point being, if you’re looking in the print edition for columnists, you’re looking in the wrong place. This is where things are going, folks. I fully agree that the chemistry between Czaban and Scott Linn is much better that his current sidekick and if we could get local hosts with a wide-range of sports knowledge, I think number of listeners on 980 could only increase...I neglect to say anything about XXX since I normally do not get a good signal. I didn't run it on DCRTV because it's getting away from the local media biz. We'll keep reporting on Dan Snyder's radio dealings, but when it comes to his buying amusement parks, eateries, and the like, well, forget it. You know, maybe Snyder should be spending a bit more time and energy on his lackluster Redskins, instead of trying to pad his riches in other capitalistic arenas. I mean, how rich does one need to be? Extreme wealth certainly hasn't made Rupert Murdoch any less of a gnarled old warlock..... (2/10/07) Allen Etter is now back as PIO at DCFEMS. But not Kathryn Friedman. No word on her replacement. (2/10/07) Fox is in fact doing a real Game of the Week for the first time this year, every Saturday at 3:30 starting April 7 through the end of the season. Usually 2 or 3 games are scheduled each week and they are broadcast regionally. One of the July 21 games will be the Nationals hosting the Rockies; the Orioles aren’t scheduled for a Fox game. Also, if every team that moved kept its original name, wouldn’t both Baltimore teams be the Baltimore Browns? (2/10/07) So will Wilbon pretty much disappear from the WaPo sport's pages like Kornholio? And the Washingtonian article says that the WaPo still has stable of columnists Huh? Sally Jenkins is averaging a column every 6 months and I believe lives in NYC. Mike Wise barely beats Jenkins in the number of columns he writes. And yes Mr. Boswell is a great sport's writer, yeah I know especially beisbol, but his columns ain't all that frequent either neither these days. He seems to have taken a back seat to the "superstars" Wilbon and Kornholio in recent year's. I get the impression that WaPo don't think sport's columnist ain't important no more. Hey get Woody Paige or bring back David Kindred or Mo Siegal!.....wonder if WaPo radio has consider weekly shows with the likes of Tom Sales or Jonathan Yardley or Angus Phillips or Andrew Beyer or Stephen Hunter or Richard Harrington and heck even Bob Levy..........is this Globe radio format really a way of kissing off the 45+ year olds cause they ain't in the money demo no more....I predict the tired old '70's hits they still play will disappear in a few months and it'll be a tight late 80's to mid 90's rock playlist...that means no Rockpile, gotd9mnit! if Weasal don't drive is he riding a bike to work and wearing white or has limo service, I mean it is Weasal! (2/10/07) Dave's response: Lots of those bands of the 1980s - The Clash and The Cure - were listened to by people then in their 20s who are now in their 40s. It's more likely the Globe is kissing off the 55+ year olds, who were in their 20s when they listened to Styx in the 1970s. Looks like most of us are not taking The Who's "My Generation" advice: "Hope I die before I get old"..... "I smell some jealousy with a pinch of fear of anything that sounds different..." right....who wouldn't have career aspirations of sitting at McDonalds at 3 AM, playing "tunes" from your laptop by the time you're 27. Time for Peter to grow up and do something productive. (2/10/07) Dave's response: Yeah, like what Howard (not K) Stern is doing. Working mornings four days a week about 35 weeks a year and pocketing $300 million..... So now we get Czaben in the morning, and Czaben and Pollin in the afternoon. Why can't the two of them work just 12 hours straight? It seems 980 is having a hard time finding anyone else who wants to work for the station. How sad that in a market of this size niether sports station can find a way to do LOCAL shows throughout the day with talented, sports-knowledgable hosts. (2/10/07) /\ February 10 Messages /\ ![]() \/ February 9 Messages \/ RE: Rosenberg..." I smell some jealousy with a pinch of fear of anything that sounds different..." Huh? Dave in Sterling (2/9/07) I listened to Rosenberg fairly regularly and found him to be pretty engaging and different and I know lots of other people who felt the same way. I just can't quite grasp the level of hate you people seem to have for this kid. Don Geronimo + black hole = a--hole (2/9/07) "Yo,Directv carries Comcast SportsNet HD...." They do? Which channel? I was not aware that D* carried any regional sports channels in HD. (2/9/07) Did anyone get the impression that Don was having just a little too much fun this week with the death of Anna Nicole Smith despite the recent events in his life? I mean, Smith was, ultimately, a human being, like his wife. In light of that, Don's humor regarding Smith took on a sad, somewhat hypocritcal feel. More than ever, I feel, it's time for Don to give up the radio microphone and do something else and not continue to stink up the radio dial as a bloated parody of himself. - Jamie (2/9/07) Hey Dave: As you probably know, the cable/satellite carriers hold all the cards – and it is the carriers who decide what networks they carry (and whether they’ll even take the phone call of a potential network…) The Washington Post, unlike the Sun, actually picks up the phone to do some REAL REPORTING --- and gets Dish on the phone to explain if and when Dish will carry MASN… It’s interesting, because the Dish spokesman implies Dish is “feeling the heat…!” Here is the piece that just came across the Washington Post. blog.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward (2/9/07) Don Geronimo + intelligence and compassion = Danny Bonaduce (2/9/07) I think I read in The Baltimore Sun that MASN intends to do HD broadcasts and is already at work on upgrading to it, but just not this coming season. (2/9/07) I like(d) TK’s show when it was on 570. Even though it wasn’t always sports all the time, I liked his wit and curmudgeon attitude (especially when he’d blow up those who asked how he was doing). When his show went to ESPN, the show was more ‘ESPN Sports Reporters’ with limited interaction with callers (but I liked the internet only show – it was fun hearing Wilbon and Tony curse). When it came back to local, it still was like the national show (except you got the repeated hours again). I’ll give it a shot, but I’d hope that it’d be more than a soundboard for Feinstein and sport reporters. And speaking of sport reporters (regarding Andy & Steve) I’m in agreement w/almost everyone. Andy is a sycophant that only believes the only sports that exist in DC (oops, the DC area) are the Redskins, Maryland basketball and whatever sport/issue that he only knows about (Steve’s the same except he adds golf & some amusing sarcasm). God forbid you counter what they know (even when you’re right) or may want to hear something other than their divine ‘trinity’ of their version of sports talk. But just my 3 cents. HR in DC (2/9/07) sorry the Magical History Tour is no more on WEBR. Despite what the host thinks I enjoyed the music selection just the "Me" stuff........And Ron and Fez fans they got podcasts and the ability to listen to show live at the WFNY site www.923freefm.com finally listened to bob dylan's XM show...is that really Dylan or someone doing an imitation and the playlist is all over the musical spectrum, does Dylan really pick the tunes or he's got to have someone helping him?.....with all the touring Dylan still does I got to wonder when he has the time to put together these shows...but I did enjoy the show (2/9/07) Dave's response: Rusty Gibson's "Magical History Tour" on WEBR will be back soon. Rusty's been having a bout of seizures related to his 2000 stroke. Hopefully, some new drugs will get them under control and Rusty will be back on WEBR's "airwaves" in a few weeks. With some cool DCRTV-related shows, that are being planned..... "unless they're playing the Yankees or the Mets you can forget about FOX broadcasting it! Whatever happened to an actual "Game of the Week" like NBC used to have? There are 30 teams the last time I counted!" Game of the Week is usually two top teams. Yankees and Mets are 2 of 8 good teams every year. Any Yankees v. Red Sox or Yankees v. Mets is game of the week. Since these series are saved for the weekend, that is what you get. If the Nationals or Orioles were good teams, they would have the game of the week. Then again, keep wishing. Bryslock (2/9/07) Totally agree with the posters who want to see MASN broadcasting in HD, but even if they did, who would carry it? Comcast? Not likely. DirecTV doesn't even carry any of the regional sports nets in HD. I have a feeling MASN would be broadcasting a beautiful HD picture to nobody. (2/9/07) It’s always good to see when the members of the Peter Rosenberg fan club – both of them – decide to drop by the mailbag. That CP article regarding McRosenberger was the single funniest thing I’ve read in many a moon. And for those who are upset that D&M ALSO found it amusing, it’s reality check time. McRosenberger, during his brief and unlamented stint on WJFK (“Radio Titanic”), didn’t have the brains to NOT pick an on-air fight with guys who could torpedo his dubious career. Never mind that his show was unbearably awful, never mind that he could spend 45 minutes on air dissecting obscure rappers, never mind all of that. He was like a tiny squirrel in the forest who starts a fight with a bear – shocker, the bear ate the squirrel, and McRosenberger is now violating intellectual property rights by playing tunes at a freakin’ MCDONALD’S. Is there a lower rung on the evolutionary scale? Good-bye, PR. Get a job. KJ Laurel,MD (2/9/07) Can someone explain to me how MASN is going to be better than Comcast SportsNet? Sure, we all will now have the opportunity to watch the Washington Expos in addition to the Orioles and there will be two channels instead of one...but if there is NO HIGH-DEFINITION then who gives a crap? Those of us who have actually spent the money to get Hi-Def are screwed if we are an O's fan or want to see whichever National League team the Expos are playing. And as for FOX showing any games from either team...unless they're playing the Yankees or the Mets you can forget about FOX broadcasting it! Whatever happened to an actual "Game of the Week" like NBC used to have? There are 30 teams the last time I counted! MASN will be a joke without Hi-Def. (2/9/07) Good suggestion by the poster about Czaban/Linn. They have a good chemistry and, while Linn doesn't have Pollin's Redskins knowledge, he has a much broader depth of overall sports knowledge. He also appreciates sports like baseball and hockey, which Pollin treats with disdain. It would be great if they did a local show too and Pollin was shown the door. (2/9/07) Don must make over a million a year. The budget for his show is five million a year. When Rosenberg had his nighttime show, I heard him talk about his internet chats with high school girls; it was creepy. So, can we assume while the rest of the unattached 20 something men in the DC area are doing what they should be doing Saturday nights, drinking at bars and hitting on chicks, Rosenberg is finishing up IMing tenth grade girls and getting ready for his graveyard shift McDonald's DJ gig? Creepy guys hang out at McDonalds post midnight Sunday morning; Rosenberg should fit right in. (2/9/07) Mad props to my man PJdj, Love ya man. Love Ron and Fez also, I can never find them up here inside the blackhole of entertainment they call Baltimore radio. I took your scolding to heart and decided to give The Globe a chance, and I must admit that hearing some less-played music was great (loved hearing The Kinks’ “Sunny Afternoon”!). However, the key word here is “some.” Since the changeover, 80 percent of the new playlist has been repeated daily. To wit: “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “He Doesn’t Look Like Jesus” (I think I got that right), “I Am Superman,” and the same six or eight Tom Petty songs have been repeated ad nauseam every day. I just hope we haven’t traded an old rut for a new one. Also, Weasel seems to be starting the morning show an hour later. This means that I can’t get weather, traffic, and time checks for the first half hour I’m up and trying to prepare for my workday. Can’t the station tap into some syndicated reporting until it’s live deejay time? Laura (2/9/07) Simple reasons Peter Rosenburg ain't on 106.7 and can't hold a job: Bad ratings, no talent AND a complete jackass on the job. Simple reasons D&M ridicule him: They are on the air AND see above. If Rosenburg ever gets a real air shift--and don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen--he can return the favor. While talent always seems to rise to the top, the flip side is also true: no talents eventually start flipping burgers or turning tricks. (2/9/07) WTEM's announcement regarding schedule changes didn't address what happens to the 9-10 AM hour between Steve Czaban's Fox Sports Radio show and the start of Brian Mitchell's program. My guess is that they'll simply air more FSR fare, specifically the first hour of an LA based show hosted by Craig Sheman and ex-Redskin James Washington. When Tony Kornheiser was on WTEM, he'd always tell listeners who didn't care for his lengthy non-sports ramblings to 'turn the dial to the right'. At long last, sports fans will be able to do just that and find viable alternatives to Mr. Tony other than the Junkies who don't stick to sports either. With his new 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM timeslot on WTWP, Kornheiser will be competing against Czaban and Mitchell on 980 as well as Mike & Mike, Colin Cowherd and the first half hour of Bram Weinstein on Triple X. For WTEM's Sports Reporters to be going head-to-head with John Riggins is ironic inasmuch as the latter used to make extended weekly appearances on Reporters during football season and probably wouldn't have landed his current gig were it not for that experience. As far as I know, Czaban will be the only host doing both morning and afternoon drive in the DC area. Unfortunately, his approach to sports radio often gets in the way of serious issue oriented talk on Reporters. A case in point is yesterday's show, where it was clear that he was trying to hijack Andy Pollin's responsible 'how would society react if a high profile player in a team sport came out of the closet' discussion in a sleazy 'which athletes do you think are gay?' direction. Mike, Fairfax (2/9/07) The person who wrote:Kapugi must have been really impressed with his performance. Please clarify? This is a business based on performance and the ability to get ratings. (2/9/07) 980 should have teamed Czaban with his morning sidekick Scott Lynn. Pollin knows so little beyond the Redskins. Lynn offers more stimulation than Pollin and Czaban feeds off that. It won't happen but it would be better radio. So Czaban-Pollin are back to claim the afternoon audience Riggins swiped. Riggins isn't that bad although doing a DC sports show from New York is difficult for him. There are times when it sounds awkward. His show was borderline good when he was with his cohorts in Miami last week. Zier and company may regret giving the company keys to a man 250 miles away. The good news for Triple X is they have talent. Weinstein's new show is very good although they should have considered teaming him with Sheehan. One of the dorkiest things I've heard someone do lately, a respectable nightclub DJ gig is one thing, either mixing it up on the 1's and 2's, or just playing tunes through a CD player or ipod, but playing at a McDonalds and then doing an interview in a newspaper, well that's probably one of the nerdiest things I've heard/seen/read about in a while. Good luck in your new career field, whenever that happens. KeninEaston (2/9/07) I don't listen to WJFK anymore. I like ragging on it because it's so bad. I see on dcrtv that Don & Mike were making fun of Peter Rosenburg today. So not funny. Two old men making fun of an upstart. I heard his show a few times and think it was pretty good. He talked left-wing politics and has a knowledge of hip-hop. I'm not making a vaue judgment on his politics and taste, so much as saying that his views on things are fresh compared to everything else on D.C. radio, in general, and WJFK, in particular. It's too bad that the station didn't keep him on longer. His show might have caught on with a younger audience. But if you call Comcast, the tech in New Orleans won't be able to ascertain whether or not the problem is at the head end. So he/she will roll a truck on your complaint. Which means you get to arrange your personal life to accommodate the technician call, which could be delayed beyond the committed hours. Most people choose a field of interest and start at the bottom hoping to work their way up the ladder. Rosenberg started at the top, and his baggy pants ride down the bannister into the abyss has been accomplished with alarming speed. After reading the linked article, I think it's safe to say Rosenberg's gig at McDonalds will be short-lived. Besides not being very complimentary to his employer, my guess is once corporate sniffs this out, Rosenberg will be back in the basement huffing up his next clambake. Can you imagine walking into a McDonalds, only to see Rosenberg sitting behind his laptop with a couple of speakers...that's rich, the friggin jokes write themselves. If I want cheap food and music, I go to a place called a bar where I can at least get a drink if by chance I have stumbled upon the silky smooth sounds of Rosenberg spinning "Misty." It's all about "Look At Me ! ", with this guy anyhow. The desperation this guy exudes to be a "somebody" is so evident and obvious, it actually works to his disfavor. Rosenberg, you don't get it...it's not about your views, your ideas, or your supposed DeeJay talents. Its about you: you aren't very funny, you aren't very smart, and you don't sound good on the radio. Your Zenith has passed, how many times do you expect lightning to hit the same charred spot? Maybe your Vater can squeeze some relatives and set you up as a mortgage banker somewhere, it's probably not too late. You just proved the exception to the adage that any press is good press, what's the next free newspaper article going to be about? Rosenberg singing in the shower? I give Rosenberg kudos for his persistence and trying, but I get a mental picture of a guy bailing water on the Titanic every time this guy's name comes up. Well, that could be, but my guess is that Polley is too chicken shit to compete with Tony K, whose show did stink, and it will this time around, too. But it's still better than any lame thing Polley does on the air, even though TK for some reason talks about that stupid "American Idol" way too much. Polley is just plain awful. The group had a labor management meeting with the bigwigs at WJLA/News8 after the recent AFTRA contract was signed and their complaints fell on deaf ears. One was being used to shoot promotions for the Politico, all have seen their beats shuffled multiple times in the last six months, and all had their desks and phones taken away (Politico reporters got their desks). As of now, the CRs are reduced to trying to write scripts at WJLA reporter’s desks when the 7ers are out in the field. The remaining three are among the newest hires (one just hired this year, and supposedly working exclusively for the Politico … unclear if that will continue with the extremely short staff) … no word on how long they’re planning to stick around. (2/8/07) And so the disastrous "John Thompson Show experiment" in drive time comes to an end with a whimper. Nice little 2 day, hush-hush "announcement" of this lineup shift. Mimes standing on the side of the Beltway would have given the station better "promotion." It was like WTEM tried to do whatever it could to get Riggins off the ground. Now he'll actually have to earn his listeners. Good luck to Steve and Andy in trying to re-collect their audience. (2/8/07) How funny was Don & Mike when talking about Rosenburg... HAHHAHAH.... A McDonald's, I would be embarassed!!! Jeff from Maine (2/8/07) Don & Mike had a fine old time today making fun of the profile of Peter Rosenberg in City Paper. What they failed to note is that no one has written a feature about them in years. A lexis-nexis search reveals 19 hits for Don Geronimo over the last 2 years, not one being in a story about D&M. Rosenberg may work at McDonalds, but at least people care and find him interesting enough to write about. The lesson: no one cares enough about D&M's worn out schtick. It's boring and outdated--and the only demographic it's successul in is one that no one cares about, pre-senior citizen white males. D&M revealed how hopelessly out of touch they were when they kept playing macarena to make fun of Rosenberg--neither funny, nor current. (2/8/07) It was sooo funny to hear D&M crack on Petey Rosenturd today....Hey Pete...you reap what you sow...enjoy the 1/4 pounders dick! WB Centreville, VA (2/8/07) Could I please ask all our friends that view this mailbag to go to www.fishbowldc.com and go to page 2 and vote for Lauren Dunn of WJLA ABC 7 News and select her as one of DC's rising journalist? She is a wonderful producer and is one of the hardest working people in this business. She is one of those people who do so much for the overall product and is hardly ever given the credit. This would be a nice commendation for a very motivated and extremely talented young lady. (2/8/07) Damn. Don majorly slapped Peter around. Talk about cringe radio. Whoa. Don seemed to take too much joy out of the City Paper article. (2/8/07) Don and Mike ragging on Peter Rosenberg's new gig at McDonalds, leading into a clip of a drunk Joan Crawford. Bad to worse. (2/8/07) Anna Nichole Smith - cable news nets in a full blown circle jerk. Didn't know she was connected to Howard Stern. (2/8/07) Dave's response: That's Howard K. Stern, not the radio guy. And I don't know how many media folks today called him Howard K. Smith, a la the deceased ABC newsman..... I came to Baltimore for a visit recently and was wondering if 96.7 WCEI had moved their transmitter site closer to the bay bridge as had been approved before my move. The signal was solid around most of the Baltimore beltway with some loss on the west side. They were also fairly clear around Bel Air Md. Surprisingly, I listened all the way out to the Frederick County line on I-70W where they quickly dropped off to an urban station (which I heard no calls for over 45 minutes). As one who enjoys engineering as a hobby, I must compliment their CE for having a great ear for audio, and the PD and staff for a polished product. I have no doubt that WCEI has the potential to give many major market stations some competition. Great job! Tom Conroy (2/8/07) OK, we got Seals nailed down. Croft went on to work as a reporter for 60 Minutes. Don’t believe me? Look at the old tapes—and ask George Costanza. (2/8/07) For those who will miss Tony Kornheiser's show, here is a brief summary: "Hi, I'm Tony Kornheiser, and this show stinks. This stinks, too. And this. My dog, Maggie... Tony and the Altones... and this stinks too. Don't forget to wear white tonight."--GAB in the Airless Cubicle (2/8/07) "To the suits at WTOP: How about adding an overnight reporter to compliment Dean Lane on the overnight shift? Do some research and see how effective Larry Krebs was for years on WMAL." When the late, great Larry Krebs received a lifetime achievement award at the March of Dimes AIR awards a few years back, there were three tables full of WTOP staffers giving him a standing ovation. Nobody from WMAL bothered to attend the dinner. (2/8/07) WTMD (Towson State) has discovered another way to beg for money. Instead of being a line-item on TSU’s budget, they are now spamming. To me, that is worse than the on-air beg-a-thons. WTMD is using the Linthicum “EMAIL Marketing” firm Targetware.com. (2/8/07) Pollin was hilarious this morning without meaning to be. After he announced the time change for Sports Reporters he started crowing about how everyone on that show would be here locally. Czaban was clueless as to what he was talking about, but he was obviously taking a shot at his new competition, John Riggins, who does the show many days from New York. How lame. It continues to amaze me that WTEM doesn't see what dead wood Pollin is, not to mention recognizing that he's pissed off baseball fans, hockey fans, college basketball fans of any team other than Maryland, soccer fans and just about everyone but Redskins fans. Even Kornheiser kicked him to the curb. His continuing presence in this market is mind boggling. (2/8/07) Now that Weasel is on in the AM drive, perhaps the big boys at WTOP will get a run for the money. It's about time. Will someone tell Dan Snyder that he needs to pull John Riggins and company off the air and get a host that is entertaining. THE RIGGINS SHOW IS SO LAME! Who cares about how drunk he got the previous night. It's time for Danny-boy to get a host who won't embarrass himself during March madness and baseball season. To the suits at WTOP: How about adding an overnight reporter to compliment Dean Lane on the overnight shift? Do some research and see how effective Larry Krebs was for years on WMAL. Lord knows you have the resources to do it. (2/8/07) Can someone inform me of who peter Rosenberg is and why people are posting about him? Looks like some fat dude you see working security at the local mall. (2/8/07) it is about time the suits at Clear Channel finally came to their senses and put the sports reporters back on the air when more people can hear them...next to Tony, that was the best thing on the station. This might be the final nail in the Red Zebra coffin since Riggins is the only hope that station has. word is that there are already a few nails in the RZ coffin...and that Snyder is considering dumping the 3 station debacle all together and going to plan d. (2/8/07) Elkridge Steve - I hear you, and your response makes perfect sense. I used to listen to D&M regularly, but a couple years ago I started hearing an anger projected from Don primarily - and it was usually directed at innocent callers who were just trying to participate, but who were never cool enough for the host. It went downhill from there. A big difference between Ron and Fez and D&M is that R&F constantly engage callers, but they use them in a different way, for short sound bites or quick opinions. Ron Bennington will verbally kick your butt or hang up on you, but he doesn't conduct calls in a confrontational mode. The XM R&F can be quite the potty mouths, and they kill certain people in the public, eye, so why do I like them? I guess because they are fun, not bitter. In the end, I find switching between XM Channels 6/7/8/9 is the way to go on my drive home - last week the "80's on 8" had: Wall of Voodoo/Mexican Radio and Thomas Dolby/She Blinded Me with Science back to back!! Who needs talk radio? Now, it's my turn to make a right turn to potential tastelessness: In the AM, Channel 9's uber-high-def morning news is da bomb - but Kim Martucci's hairstlyle definitely **isn't** da bomb. It's time for a haircut girlfriend - and there's no doubt the Kimster's all girl in my book!! DAdjPJinVa, peace out... (2/8/07) I dont want to wish Rosenburg right out of another gig, but I believe public performance (for pay) of recorded music such as this requires some sort of BMI, ASCAP or RIAA license. If someone from such a licensing organization strolls in late at night for a McRib and a shake, it could become an issue. Hope it doesn't. (2/8/07) JIM Seals was in Seals and Croft…England Dan is Dan Seals, his brother. Yes, I’ll leave you all alone, now. (2/8/07) Yesterday’s flashback: Hooters girls. Today: WMAL. What a buzzkill…Tim in Stafford (2/8/07) Dave's response: I do have something with Andy Parks in a swimsuit. Would that be better? Re: Russert's "bombast and showmanship" - actually that was Howie Kurtz in the WaPo who said that. (2/8/07) Since we're walking down WHFS' Memory Lane...does anyone recall the tragic car wreck involving WHFSers in the 70's near Brookville Road in Silver Spring? (2/8/07) (RE: Les Paul's pirate radio station) I also saw that story in the book, "Les Paul: An American Original" by Mary Alice Shaughnessy. It has lots of other great stories about his life and times and musical adventures. It's on Amazon and if you use Dave's link, the purchase will help support DCRTV. (2/8/07) Dave's response: Classie Freddie Blassie? Back in the day, before WWF/WWE, when pro wrestling was regionalized, Classie Freddie Blassie was based on the West Coast. He was supposedly quite a hit with the Hollywood crowd. He eventually ended up in the WWF as a "manager". His tag line was "Pencil Neck Geek". I think he even had a recording under that title at some point. He was on WBAL's Sports show 1 year when Jeff Rimer was around. It was hilarious. Doug in Bel Air (2/8/07) First things first. Happy Birthday DCRTV. You are one of the few sites I get something from on a daily basis. Thank You. Now to my radio-phile compadre in VA. daPJdjINva, I do not question the mental stability of Donnie G. I know it is slightly off. Everybody is a little off center. Does he have a double standard? You betcha. He would say so himself. Anybody who knows the show at all knows that. Anybody who has ever said a nasty thing about another person has the same double standard. You have never had something nasty to say about someone and never been angry when somebody has something nasty to say about you. What I do question is the mental stability of someone listening to a “tasteless radio show” and getting upset when they say something……. UMMMM…… tasteless. You were expecting maybe white doves and perfume kisses. They rag on everyone. The examples you cited do the same thing. Just ask the Junks if they have ever heard of “Whore or Bore”. Its ok PJdj. I am sure that we enjoy a lot of the same thing but will agree to disagree about this show. They are just a silly radio show. Waddle doddle doo dum. Elkridge Steve (2/8/07) HAPPY BIRTHDAY to DIAMOND DAVE!!!
With lots of wishes for many, many more to come. Have a GREAT day.
Tippy & Angel (right), too (2/8/07)Dave's response: Thanks..... With the Sports Reporters shifting to evenings, are we going to get a full 3 hours of live show or are they going to replay an hour from 6-7...which makes no sense since this is their prime time. Let's hope he leaves the news article reading segment in the morning. My guess is the change is so Andy can listen to Tony's show in the morning. (2/8/07) Decades ago when guitarist Les Paul was based close to NYC, he picked up a "phono oscillator" (a kind of rudimentary transmitter meant to beam a phonograph into a nearby AM radio), had it tweaked and went on the air with his musician buddies as bootleg radio station "The Booger Brothers Network". The oscillator had no filtering and was spitting harmonics every which way. They were shut down eventually by men with very large badges, and told their signal was blanking out the approach to LaGuardia Airport. It happens. (According to a Guitar Player magazine interview with Jim Atkins, Chet's brother). (2/8/07) Weasel in the mornings! Finally, something to listen to on terrestrial drive time radio. Elliot, the Junkies and the rest of the boring clowns on local DC area radio can suck eggs. (2/8/07) Of all of the photos of Bonneville's AM xmtr site in Wheaton at www.mvarc.com, the downright scariest shot shows just how close a row of town homes was built to the facility: www.mvarc.com... Quite a contrast to the days when WJSV's sticks were smack dab in the middle of nowhere: s93943464.onlinehome.us... Reminds me of this amusing article from 1987 which explained how successfully WTOP-AM invaded those homeowners' dreams: dcmemories.com... Back in the '70s, a friend who lived in the shadow of WTOP's towers told me how, one summer's day, he had innocently strung a long length of bare wire across the top of his privet hedge to aid in trimming a straight line. He gave it no thought as he fired-up his hedge trimmer, but once his arm grazed that wire, he instantly learned that RF will bite ya! (2/8/07) According to RecNet and Google Maps, the WAGE AM 1190 50,000 watt and WXTR AM 730 28,000 watt proposed transmitter facilities are, if not on the same piece of property near Redskins Park, they are at least on adjacent properties right next to each other (with only the Redskins training facility between them). Hmmmm. That also means if approved, there will be at least 9 AM radio towers surrounding the Redskins practice fields, blowing out 78,000 watts of radiation during team practices with the 50,000 watts from WAGE specifically targeting the main practice field. I doubt they'll be able to use headsets on that field. I wonder if there might even be a spark of electricity on the field surface occasionally. Have there been any studies done on this amount of radio waves and team performance before? :-) (2/8/07) Dave,
With the ubiquitous Weasel back in the news on the eve of the launch of
his new morning show at WARW, I thought you might be interested in a
photo I took of him in the mid 1980's. Weasel is shown standing on the
front steps of WHFS when it was located under the twin towers in
Annapolis on Admiral Drive. Back then HFS was pumping out the tunes on
99.1 FM, still owned by Jake Einstein, and boasted a pretty cool line-up
with Weasel, Dave & Damien Einstein, Bob Here, Tom Terrell, Susan, Neci,
Adele, etc. The building was then and still is the home of WNAV 1430 AM
(Sajak Broadcasting). I did weekends and filled in during the
week...and, of course, gave Weasel a ride back to D.C. whenever I could,
like everyone else. It's great to hear that Weasel will be back in a
prime slot again...looking forward to a Party, Party Weekend!
Thanks...Mike Dawson (2/8/07)"....Born on your birthday: Quite a list... Still alive: Ted Koppel, Nick Nolte, Robert Klein, Mary Steenburgen, John Grisham, Gary Coleman, Seth Green.. Not Still Alive.. Lana Turner, Jack Lemmon, Audrey Meadows, James Dean...." Don't forget William Tecumseh Sherman, Jules Verne, composer John Williams, Dan Seals (Seals and Crofts), England Dan (of England Dan and John Ford Coley), Clete Boyer (NY Yankee 3rd Baseman) and wrestler Classie Freddie Blassie. Happy Birthday Dave! Sincerely, Joe Kasell (2/8/07) Dave's response: Classie Freddie Blassie? Kane still talking about Mark and Kris....another brilliant idea from Kapugi, I'm guessing.Lets see what the ratings bring next week. (2/8/07) ("It has been almost 3 months since Kane came to DC and he STILL can’t get his shit together. Better yet, he still talks about Mark and Kris. He "heard" that something is happening with them, but he didn’t want to spread the rumors?") What’s that about? It’s about being incredibly unprofessional. It’s really sad that Kane can’t create truly entertaining content. Instead he makes fun of people that lost their jobs. It’s so like Clear Channel to kick people when they’re down. Kane and his boyfriend Kapugi are mean spirited, self serving pricks. Kapugi is one of the most disingenuous people I’ve ever met… Look, I was no fan of Mark or Chris… but I’m less of a fan of this “we’re bad boys” radio. It’s not hip, cutting edge or the least bit entertaining. It’s the sign of a “talent” with no idea of how to treat his audience with true entertainment. (2/8/07) “Mr Diamantis: I will certainly agree that your knowledge of radio technology is superior to mine. Your anecdotal evidence was compelling and in the interest in learning more about the subject I would like to pose several questions to you. It appears that all of the examples you gave of radio interference involved high powered commercial stations that were all in good standing with the FCC. Does the high power and close proximity of the transmitters to each other and airports have anything to do with the problems they caused? “…….Most certainly. Stations in close proximity to one another can cause all sorts of problems, and usually require a filter in the transmission line to prevent signals from “mixing” with one another inside the transmitters and creating interference. In the previous case cited about WABS 780, filters were in place; the problem was caused in the receivers, not the transmitters…..”Could a 100 watt low power FM station located in an extremely isolated small town in the Nevada desert cause similar problems?”…..A properly designed and engineered stand alone 100 watt FM operating properly in this situation would probably not create interference with other stations……”Do you have any examples of any low power 100 watt transmitters causing these types of problems?”…..I recall, but cannot site the specifics, about more than one “pirate” operating in proximity to an airport creating interference to aircraft. The problem lies with the equipment used, the construction and maintenance (usually none) of the site. Typical equipment used by unlicensed operators create unwanted signals (harmonics, spurs, etc) that interfere with legitimate stations…. “In regards to any precedent being set by this case, I believe the FCC examines each license request on a case by case basis. If they considered a license request to not be in the public interest would they not deny it? Mike.”…..The problem here is, in the instance of applying for LPFM, the FCC previously held that illegal, unlicensed operators were to be denied licenses. This current situation is a total reversal of that policy, and certainly is contrary to the usual way things are done. It’s unfortunate that not every individual or organization wanting to broadcast in the “public interest” has the kind of clout to get a congress person to help them out. I don’t know what kind license request would “not be in the public interest”, but that is usually not the limiting criteria for license approval. Once the license is granted, and the station is operating, the license can be lost if it can be proven by outside entities that the station has not operated in the public interest; however, this rarely happens, and when it does, requires lots of cash, lawyers, and connections. John Diamantis, Chief Engineer, WBQB WFVA Radio, B101.5 NewsTalk1230, Fredericksburg, VA. (2/8/07) George 104 went off the air this morning for at least 20 minutes. Not sure if they are off now. It happend at 9:30. Bri, Silver Spring (2/8/07) How irritating are those Shaw’s Jewelers commercials? “How did he know about Shaw’s?” Well, maybe he WENT TO THE MALL AND TURNED AROUND, since Shaw’s is in every freakin’ mall! “She was speechless? Lisa?” Here’s the response: “Well, of course she was speechless – after I gave her the jewelry, she had my [BLEEP] in her mouth!” Bad advertising, people. Sincerely, TMU (2/8/07) Dave, I just wanted to wish you a very happy birthday. Thanks for taking the time to keep all the Radio and TV junkies up to date on what’s happening. It’s appreciated. Have a super day and celebrate hardy. Just remember we are all counting on you tomorrow for our Radio and TV update fix. Diane (2/8/07) Dave's response: Thanks Diane. I'm proud to be your local media gossip "dealer"..... Dave, Warmest birthday wishes to you. According to Holiday Mathis in the WP, "your heart is open for different kinds of love". Who knew! ;) --Bruce (2/8/07) Dave's response: Hmmm..... Dave, Give your item on Tim Russert's testimony at the Libby trial a second look and see if "bombast and showmanship" are what you really meant to say about him. I don't know Russert, though we did share the stage at a Fairfax Chamber debate once. He's always struck me as smart, well-prepared and courteous. Compared with many people who make their living on TV, he's very low-key and respectful of others. He asks the tough questions, but he's never been a jerk about it. Just a thought.... (2/8/07) I thought I just heard before the 10am break on WTEM, Andy Pollin say that staring Monday, the Sports Reporters segment, heard form 9am to 12, would be moving to 4 to 7. Have you guys heard anything about that, and if so, what is WTEM's new lineup since there is nothing currently on their website Thanks CJ (2/8/07) Dave's response: Just got a Front Page blurb up..... Dude, people still want to hear about Mark and Kris, that is why Kane still talks about them. It is pretty obvious and normal I guess. Sad at the same time... (2/8/07) Dave, Happy birthday. Dawning of the age of Aquarius, all that... Re 980's lineup, Andy Polly informs us that Brian Mitchell moves to 10-1, the excellent and mysteriously un-syndicated John Thompson show goes to 1-4, and the reporters with studio-rested Czaban take over the 4-7 slot. I wonder if this also has something to do with Mr. Tony's debut on WTWP? Thanks for an excellent site. I grew up on Godfrey, the Joy Boys, Jamie Bragg, and Eddie Gallaher. This site tops the ratings! Frank Gilligan, Arlington VA (2/8/07) Dave's response: Thanks..... Hey Dave, Happy Happy Birthday. The best part of your birthdate is the fact that you were born! Those of us that have met you and know you are truly blessed. Yes, I'll keep supporting the Mailbag...no worrys. Hope to see you soon for another Rusty Show...PS, Rusty mend quickly. PLB (2/8/07) Dave's response: Thanks! Rhinestone Rusty Gibson's getting some new meds to help control his latest bout of seizures, a result of his 2000 stroke. If all goes well, we hope to resume the "DCRTV Radio" shows on WEBR in March..... 980 ran a promo this morning that the Brian Mitchell show is moving to 10-1. Is this the end of Sports Reporters as we know it? (2/8/07) Dave's response: A previous poster says "The Sports Reporters" is moving to the 4 PM to 7 PM slot - up against Riggo on Triple X. Anyone know the full revised TEM sked? So, now that MSNBC let the f-word go out, does anyone know when the riots will begin and the buildings start to crumble? I'd like to be out of the way when that happens. Seriously, I wish our society would just grow up and save the worrying for the things that need worrying. Or at least wonder about the mindset that leads people to ranch-envy instead of making a big deal about a standard Anglo-Saxonism. (2/8/07) It has been almost 3 months since Kane came to DC and he STILL can`t get his shit together. Better yet, he still talks about Mark and Kris. He "heard" that something is happening with them, but he didn`t want to spread the rumors? What was that about? Why not worry about the shit that is happening to your own morning show and the station that used to be good? That`s of course BEFORE all sorts of chunky faces in FLZ gear came along. Good luck with running those tv commercials during American Idol by the way. Fits right in with Ian Benardo. See if he will join the Hot crowd and become a co-host. He will probably do a lot better than whatever that chick`s name is who murders the 10-3 slot. (2/8/07) Born on your birthday: Quite a list... Still alive: Ted Koppel, Nick Nolte, Robert Klein, Mary Steenburgen, John Grisham, Gary Coleman, Seth Green.. Not Still Alive.. Lana Turner, Jack Lemmon, Audrey Meadows, James Dean. (2/8/07) Dave's response: Definitely. I hate shirts. Even in this cold weather..... Caught the end of a promo this morning on WTEM 980 saying the Sports Reporters would be aired 4-7pm starting Monday. Didn't catch the rst of the lineup. (2/8/07) Dave's response: Out here in Wild West Fairfax, it'll be "The Sports Reporters" from 4 PM until sunset (about 5:30 or so this time of the year), when WTEM goes on its night power pattern..... (2/7/07) "Elkridge Steve" - I haven't listened to the ever-cool D&M since last year. But as a loyal fan don't you question, even a little, between the hilarious bits and commentary, the mental health of someone who apparently refers to Sue Palka as a "man" but goes nuts if someone mentions his late wife or son? I'll tell you what dude - call the Joy Boys and refer to Don as "Boo Boo Bear". I'd sure as Hell break my D&M boycott to listen to the fun you would be in for. Oh, one other thing - I can appreciate radio humor and there is good stuff out there, the Junkies (fitfully), the Monsters in the Morning on XM 152 (when they aren't hawking some product) and the great Ron and Fez. My point is I don't find those shows as mean-spirited and nasty as the (ever thinner and fit) D&M or Q&A. I guess it's all a matter of taste. And the mouldy beef jerky that's the JFK drive time show doesn't suit me. But to yourself and all D&M fans I say: Manga!! daPJdjINva, arbiter of taste on America's Airwaves!! Haba-do-ga-ga/Haba-do-gee!! (2/7/07) Everyday I noticed I've become more recipient to the O&A show than the Don and Mike show. To be fair, I haven't listened to the Don and Mike show for over a month. Maybe I should feel guilty, but I think D&M have toned down their show on purpose, not because of the FCC. (2/7/07) Why all of a sudden are folks taking potshots at Ms. Palka? Besides being the consummate professional meteorologist, she's also very easy on the eyes! Rusty Gibson (2/7/07) Re: Instead of bashing Sue Palka (who does nothing but her job, day in and day out with no walkouts or hissy fits) why doesn't Donnie G. put a picture of his obviously uber-hot girlfriend on his web site so interested parties can determine for themselves how she compares to the female employees ///// Good Idea, but to be fair, the Sue Palka bit with the deep voice and insinuations that she is a man, is pretty old news. I didn't hear the latest incarnation of this "bit," but I can tell you it's years old and has been run out every time the fat guys pile on the local TV weathermen. Have you heard that Topper Shutt is a midget, that Bob Ryan has Howdy Doody hair, and that Richard Pryor actually used the "N" word in the title of one of his LPs ? Sure, I know, Sue Palka doesn't deserve it, but the shock and outrage is about 10 years late or overdue...and besides, who cares, it's just another stale gag from guys that have run out of ideas. (2/7/07) Several days ago, I e-mailed the good people at the Mount Vernon Amateur Radio Club about a small, but very obvious mistake on their website (after several folks made note of it here on DCRTV, natch). They mis-identified the pictures from a recent radio station transmitter site visit as “WTOP Radio Station Alexandria, Virginia”. Anyone who knows anything about D.C. radio knows that te facility pictured there is WTOP (now WTWP’s) AM facility in Wheaton, Maryland, just off of University Boulevard. I know, ‘cause I used to work for WTOP, and one of my duties was operating the transmitter. I would have hoped that they would have corrected the mistake by now, but obviously, its not a big priority for them. And so it goes... – Max in Mild West Arlington (2/7/07) What the hell is wrong with Chris Matthews??? You know he can control his mouth when he's being interviewed by Tim Russert, Keith Oberman (sp?) or the other pin-head colleagues at MSNBC - I can't stand these puffed-up nobodies who think they are as edgy and as important as the stories they are covering - that the FCC rules don't apply to them and they can be as entertaining as any shock jock. (2/7/07) Hi Dave, I can't believe Don G verbally assaulted Sue Palka on his show. That is just bizarre. Someone must have been mistaken or mis-understood him. Besides being a top-notch weatherperson who seems to actually like her work, Sue Palka has the prettiest blue eyes on TV. Perhaps Don needs another intervention? Something was clouding his mind -- to say such a thing about Sue Palka...Wow. Keep up the great work. (2/7/07) The Miami area also has WRHC, Radio Habana Cuba. It operated for a year or so on an unauthorized frequency, power, antenna pattern. Eventually the FCC fined it and required it to cease "within 30 days". It's been operating under various STAs ever since. It's just filed yet another application for new facilities. "Real" radio stations can sometimes resemble pirates and not suffer much in the way of consequences. The FCC can be under a lot of pressure from "the hill". (2/7/07) Weasel has too much class to engage in childish, impish on-air feuds with anyone. Those are preschool games best left to jerks like D&M, O&A, and others who can't rely on their talent to draw listeners. JA (2/7/07) OK everybody, time for a vocabulary lesson. "Mute" means unable to speak, while "moot" means irrelevant. Like this posting. But I feel so much better getting that out there. --The Ghost of Vince Lombardi (2/7/07) Dave's response: My TV remote has a "moot" button. But it only becomes activated when I'm watching Fox News..... The name of the new Public Spanish Network, V-me, is clever, but subtly so. It would be pronounced in Spanish as vay-may (an approximate English transliteration), which means "See Me". A rare cleverness from Public Television. Of course, for decades there has been a TV station in Los Angeles called KVEA -- "que vea" -- which is Spanish for, in a non-literal translation but with the proper meaning, "You ought to see this". While we're on the subject, there is WQBA in Miami (like "Cuba"), WAQI in Miami (aquí means "here"), and WACA in Wheaton, (acá means something like "over here") . -- Carlos en Olney (2/7/07) Those Ibiquity station lists you link to on your front page are out of date in terms of station formats (or maybe WASH is still All-Christmas? I haven't checked) so I wonder what other information is incorrect as well. I see WSMJ's subchannel is called "Curvalicious", which has to be the first new term I've seen for a format in many years. I'm still not convinced I should part with $200 to find out what it's about, though. "HD" radio has a loooong way to go to match the variety on Sirius. (2/7/07) DApjDJinVA come now. Are you serious? Were the comments by Mr. Geronimo low class and tasteless? Yes they were. But what were you expecting? William Buckley? Maybe NPR? Wait….Maybe even Classical music (the real Oldies). You should maybe stick with the ratings powerhouses that air that. Let say for a moment that the boys of WJFK were to take the high road and stop being tasteless and sophomoric. Maybe they could discuss the stock market or the war or maybe even social injustice. Then you (and you alone) could listen again. They produce income and ratings. That means there are a lot of people being entertained. As for Ms. Palka, I am sure that Sue knows that when she steps in front of a camera, that people will judge and be harsh. Mr. Geronimo also expects that people will be judging him and be harsh. They are both old enough and mature enough to expect this and deal with it. If you are going to set yourself up as an arbiter of what is tasteless than please do not sink to the level of calling Donnie G and his crew “Fat Boys”. That would also be sooooooooooo super ironic. Elkridge Steve (2/7/07) Instead of bashing Sue Palka (who does nothing but her job, day in and day out with no walkouts or hissy fits) why doesn't Donnie G. put a picture of his obviously uber-hot girlfriend on his web site so interested parties can determine for themselves how she compares to the female employees of DC TV stations? Yes, Donnie G. and his merry pranksters are undoubtedly DC's radio embarrassment. The Palka comments are clear evidence the Fat Boys are still experts at delving yet new depths of tastelessness. It is sooooooooooo super ironic that Donnie G. demands sympathy and understanding from his audience for behaving like the out-of-control sociopath he is. Good riddance Michael Hughes, WJFK, CBS Radio, Buzz, Robbay and any one else associated with the JFK drive time train wreck. DApjDJinVA now blissfully JFK drive-time free for 77 consecutive days... (2/7/07) I guess folks aren't aware of the expression "Chitlin Circuit" It's been around for years. To most, it's not a derogatory remark, it's simply fact. Back in the day the R&B groups.. Sherilles... Orlons.... Big Al Wilson..... Percy Sledge, James Brown, they all travelled the "Chitlin Circuit". If anyone took ubrage with that from MS: Hughes, they are probably looking for headlines..ANG (2/7/07) “Dear Mr. Right Wing: The radio station in question was broadcasting at 100.3 MHz which is within the FM band of frequencies 88-108 MHz. Aircraft broadcast on a different frequency band of 108-136 MHz. In other words his station could not possibly have interfered with any aircraft operations thereby rendering mute your tirade regarding aircraft crashes, fatalities and felonies.”…. Obviously, Mikey, you don’t have an understanding how radio works. That’s okay, most folks don’t. It is entirely possible for a transmitter broadcasting in the FM band to create interference not only in the aircraft band, but all the way up your dial into the GHz range as well. In fact, back in the 20th century, WGMS, while broadcasting at 103.5, was SHUT DOWN by the FEDS because of a problem with their transmission system that caused interference to planes landing at National Airport. This can be created by out of adjusted transmitters, faulty parts in the transmitter, faulty transmission lines (the big wire that connects the transmitter to the antenna), re-radiation from another transmitter causing third order intermod, etc, etc. If you really want to get nutty, there was an issue in Arlington, where WABS, 780 AM(!) was wiped out for miles by something called “receiver induced third order intermod” (whew!)(or if you want to impress you dates, R.I.O.T.I.), where the combination of WJFK (106.7), and, at the time WCXR (105.9), both on the channel 56 tower, created a an issue in receivers that prevented reception any where near 800 AM. The signal was not “in the ether” (as was proven by a battery of instruments; I know, I was there), but was created by an overload in the circuitry in the radios! Imagine if the combination landed somewhere between 108-136 MHz..... While this whole issue of providing a license to a “pirate” MAY be “legal” (in a very convoluted kind of way) what it does worst case, is set a precedent; how can the FEDS now deny any knucklehead a license that decides to go on the air and broadcast “in the community’s interest”?? John Diamantis, Chief Engineer, WBQB WFVA Radio, B101.5 NewsTalk1230, Fredericksburg, VA. (2/7/07) Joe Krebs & crew were at metro traffic in silver spring yesterday to shoot a story on the operation. (2/7/07) Dave's response: Oh my God, someone's having surgery in Metro Traffic's offices? So many jokes, so little time. Oh, nevermind..... Dave. You seemed to have missed a simmering controversy. Radio One's Cathy Hughes and Steve Harvey, an ex-employee, have been arguing over his comments and her rebuttal in the black press. Seems Ms. Hughes referred Harvery as to the circuit of black comedy clubs as the 'chitlin circuit'. www.eurweb.com. Others have not taken so kindly to her words. www.eurweb.com. There have been other rumors that Jay Stevens was brought on board to solve the situation in LA. But, given Ms. Hughes concerns about being disrespected, could this echo.youthmediacouncil.org be part of the reason Jay exited WPGC and a possible liability for his tenure at Radio One? (2/7/07) UH OH! Somebody from Bonneville just used the "H" word!! So, George is "Adult Hits"?? Shagnasty (2/7/07) Dear Dave: Here's a link from today's New York Daily News (www.nydailynews.com) which clarifies the "Sinatra going from XM to Sirius" post. Looks like no more than a licensing issue with, according to Jonathan Schwartz, no change in the content of the former "Frank's Place" channel on XM. I'm sure that both services are going to mention the death of singer Frankie Laine and feature his music, something that you would not be able to get in the DC area...unless you live near WTRI. Great site Dave! Sincerely, Joe Kasell (2/7/07) Waah, its cold. Waah, its snowing. Waah, schools are closed and Metro trains are breaking down. Waah, its still cold. Good golly, will you weather people relax! Channel 4 ran tape of a snowfall in Oswego NY (where my first radio job was in May 1979); a lake effect storm put 3 feet of the stuff down in less than 2 days. Three Feet!!! Do you know what we used to do in Oswego when we had a snowfall like we have this morning here in DC? We'd go on picnics and bitch about the heat!!! (2/7/07) Dave's response: You mean the local media has been covering the snow and cold? Every time I turn on the TV and radio it's non-stop coverage of that astronaut chick in a diaper..... Watching WTTG morning news today I saw Allison Seymour at a store with winter gear. Gurvir was asking her questions and when Allison was answering Gurvir kept chatting and laughing over Allison's response. What the hell was that? It was like she wanted to upstage her. I am no Gurvir fan I do not find her talented and let's face it, Allison is ten times better than Gurvir and should be anchoring that show, but I am sure Gurvir knows that. "Golly" Phil (2/7/07) Good morning Dave. Just wanted to pass along some information that I came across while doing the research for my program. Dennis Yost, lead singer of the 60's group, the Classics IV suffered a serious head injury last year and is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation. According to the Classics IV website, Dennis has been in and out of a coma and has been treated in 9 different facilities. To assist his wife Linda in defraying the cost of medical expenses, a benefit concert is scheduled for March 25th at Rhino's live near Cincinnati. You can log onto Bob Mathers' www.ultimateoldiesradio.com to find out more or the Classics IV website which is www.classicsiv.com. By the way, the Classics IV's hit "Spooky" is featured on the Cruisin' 1968 series with the one and only Johnny Dark during his days with WCAO. You can also heard a Jack Edwards and Gene Creasy promo. The liner notes mention something that was very true for rock and roll lovers in Baltimore, "You heard it first here on WCAO". Blessings. Joyce Conroy (WHFC/WYTI) (2/7/07) Yesterday, DC's radio embarrassment Don Geronimo did a bit about the gender of Channel 5 weather forecaster Sue Palka. He and his buddy Mike just love joking that she's a man. They refer to her as a him. Does Don go home in the evenings and pour a big drink and settle in his "cave" and say, man, what a good show today. I personally hurt a lot of innocent victims with my infantile sense of humor. I would love to see Don run into Sue in the grocery store some day. Don would probably wimper and piss his pants. (2/7/07) sinatra going from xm to sirius (2/7/07) What are WJLA's plans for the 5pm broadcast in the wake of Kathleen Mathews's departure? (2/7/07) /\ February 7 Messages /\ ![]() \/ February 6 Messages \/ from Radio Daily News: On Friday Delilah will tour the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, The Mologne House and The Fisher House in Washington, D.C., to visit some of the soldiers she met abroad and spend time with injured troops returning from the front lines. Delilah recently spent two weeks traveling with “Operation Season’s Greetings,” an all-star tour sponsored by the Air Force Reserve Command to entertain American service men and women overseas. 97.1 WASH-FM has invited her to host their annual Valentine’s Ball at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Washington D.C., on February 10 (2/6/07) Okay, this is my last word on Bob Mathers' and his religious tub-thumping, and I hope I will be able to line it up in order to bring media into it. Mr. Mathers talked a lot but said nothing in his last post, and it's obvious that nothing I say will change his mind. He talks like a book (and I don't mean the Bible, except to quote certain chapter and verse), a book that has been written for him by evangelists of the kind seen on TV and heard all too often on radio stations across the country. Too many pages have been torn from the "Good Book" and cast aside, and the alleged religions forces itself into politics, where it has no business. The media has a perverse fascination with so-called religious leaders. How is it that Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and James Dobson are constantly hauled onto the talk shows as "experts" when all they do is spit hateful rhetoric? Likely it is because their presence and their schtick will equal ratings for the respective shows they get on. In addition on the secular media, it appears that reporters are ordered to work God in there; if you get a soundbite where someone says they prayed, it gets in there. It also concerns me a great deal, the prevalence of so-called "Christian" radio and TV outlets. There seems to me to be a collusion of sorts, considering the rhetoric I hear on so many and how the programming seems much the same. I wonder about their ownership status, and the plethora of translators that some throw about the landscape. But of course the FCC won't look into that, oh no no. That'd be doing their job. There, I have attempted to work the media into this argument, because I strongly believe that a stranglehold is being placed on radio stations, particularly on the AM dial by religous outlets, who do not spread good news, but who spread an insidious form of Christianity, to those who do not wish to do their own reading, thinking and choosing. Thank you Dave...the RCL (2/6/07) Re: "Dave's response: And O'Reilly's not an old fart?" There is no one older and fartier than Bill O'Reilly, but it is clear they are not getting rid of him - ever - so, even when doing fantasy line-ups it's best to work around him and not stress too much - just two hours of dead, meaningless air. They had their chances to shuttle him off, but they are weak. (2/6/07) Anyone have any idea when "George" airs "Music and the Spoken Word"? I cannot imagine any Bonneville station not airing it! Aircraft broadcast on a different frequency band of 108-136 MHz. In other words his station could not possibly have interfered with any aircraft operations thereby rendering mute your tirade regarding aircraft crashes, fatalities and felonies. It is possible that this station may have caused some interference with another FM station but that interference is not mentioned in the article. The station was indeed operating for almost 2 years without a license (and crashes) and the owner complied immediately with the FCC order to shut down his operation. He admits this action was instrumental in gaining the temporary license. The FCC issued the temporary license at the request of Sen. Reid and changed the broadcast frequency of the station to 106.3 MHz which should fix any interference problems the station might have had. The FCC could and should have denied the request if they thought the station presented a problem but they determined there was none. Bottom line: EVERYONE HERE ABIDED BY THE LAW. Regarding the Sen. Reid land deal: Why don’t you wait until the man is indicted and convicted of a crime before you call him a felon. It is quite possible that this land deal was legal. It may also be possible that he committed a crime. If and when he is found guilty of a crime then we will be in agreement regarding his honor or lack of it. Until then I suggest you stay away from the right wingnut radio talk shows and internet blogs. They seem to be negatively affecting your mental state.
