(11/6/06) Dave, Funny story about shitty, small time, small market, technical production from your friends at Red JackAss. I'm in the car, pleading with the driver and another passenger to listen to 980 because I've had it, and then some, with Larry Michael on Snyder's station. Weinstein's credibility, whatever he's got left from working for the team, has certainly taken a hit because of that Michael guy. Anyway, today's lunch hour begins with Bram waiting for Larry to start (they were in two different locations), then having to take it himself as it's quite clear Michael isn't there, isn't listening, or both. Then, out of nowhere, comes a montage of ass-kissy sound bites OVER Bram. Well played RJ. Apparently, they've hired the hearing impaired to monitor the sound of the station. What's next? Michael making matters worse by re-starting the show and wondering where Bram was, because he couldn't hear or communicate with Weinstein. They did get it ironed out. By that time, I had convinced my co-riders to tune into 980 and Brian Mitchell. Much better show, too. They won't be going back to RedJoke. Comedic, and quite sad. Kinda reminded me of the glitches 980 used to have when the 'brain' trust at RedJackass worked over at 'TEM. Moral of the story is - 'TEM sounds better than ever, and my co-passengers now agree. Snyder must be so pleased. Where else can you get evening drive football insight such as ' Hey, Senator Allen - what do you think will happen next with the team?' Gotta justify those party donations, huh Dan? WTEM for me, please. Love the site, Dave! (11/6/06) I've developed a thrombosis again tonight upon hearing that the "Chris Plante Show" will not be on the air at all (the night before an important midterm election, no less!) because of the Maryland Terrapins sports stuff on WMAL. But, Chris is scheduled to extend his evening show on Election Day to cover the results, so that's a relief. -Silvie in Waldorf- (11/6/06) OBSESSION... That's all it can be called. Don again railing on yet another website this afternoon on his little radio show. This time it's not DCRTV, but rather a site that's been around for years, the Radio Gods Forum. He spent at least 1 break going off about the people who post on the site, who are overwhelmingly "huge fans" of the show. Way to go, Don! Way to alienate what few diehard fans you actually might have. But I think I have it figured out: It's all about control. You see, Don can't control what's said on free forums like DCRTV, the DCRTV Mailbag, and other "unofficial fan sites". On his little radio show, he can dump you, hang up on you, or have his call screener get rid of you. But in the real world, outside of Don's little box, he can't control what's said -- good or bad (and again, the stuff on the site he railed against today is overwhelming positive toward Don and/or Mike). Is it maybe because some fans were saying how good the show was when Don was out for the couple of days last week and Mike was on his own? Does poor little Don feel threatened by Mike (et. al.)'s independence? But it's all about control. Either have full control over it, or criticize it as being "negative". CONTROL FREAK! Get help, Don. Please. (11/6/06) Rob C. in Bethesda... didn't the Redskins win yesterday? I wouldn't have thought it from your post. Of course, I slept through the game. GAB in the Airless Cubicle (11/6/06) RE: [ " The rolls of registered voters are public record, and the data is available in various forms. One way to search is for recent registrations or recent changes, and that's probably where your absentee ballot showed up " ]........ That is a pretty good explanation, but it also adds to the scariness factor and sort of identifies me and my vote. I find that an invasion of my privacy. It tells everyone in the world what method of voting I chose, and to some extent gives out personal information about me that I don't feel should be public information to campaign officials. If I choose to vote absentee ballot, that is my private right. Just as you cannot go in the voting booth and take photos of people in the act of voting to document their act of voting, my request for an absentee ballot and info included with it should not be public info unless I've changed something. In this case I did not, but obviously there was a data entry flub. I think this is a significant privacy issue that needs to be addressed in the State Legislature in Maryland. Seriously, how is it that I get erroneously addressed campaign solicitations BEFORE I EVEN RECEIVE MY ABSENTEE BALLOT? Someone OBVIOUSLY had DIRECT ACCESS TO THE VERY LAST MINUTE ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUESTS before even the county workers were able to mail my absentee ballot out. WBAL's JANE MILLER, are you listening? I still think this is a significant story whether laws were broken or not and I'm still not convinced that laws were not broken. (11/6/06) Been trying to give the Let It Rip segment on FOX5 Morning News a chance, but it's just not working for me..I feel like I'm looking at and listening to The McLaughlin Group..Too much yelling and people talking over each other. (11/6/06) Hi Dave: DCRTV has really grown over the years and continues. YOu've done an outstanding job putting everything together and making it the place where everyone has to go to get the real news. I haven't looked at the site in quite some time, but whenever I do, I get this lump in my throat and can't believe that I no longer work in the best radio market in the world. You know I'd just about do anything to work again in DC. All I want to do is to work with someone who wants to have fun, and let me be funny on the air again. I had so much fun at WPGC and was allowed to do news in such a way that people loved to listen to it. News pretty much sucks, so I thought, what the hell, might as well make it entertaining. So I did. The best part of my radio career without a doubt were the years I spent at WPGC! Wow, what a ride! I can remember meeting Senator John Glen at a black tie event back in 1978 when I first arrived in DC. I thought he looked like the John Glen I had seen on TV. You know, the astronaut dude. He was in front of me in a receiving line. I tapped him on the shoulder and said: "Aren't you the famous astronaut." He acknowledged me and was really a nice guy. I told him I just wanted to shake hands with an American hero. He asked me what my name was and what I did for a living. I told him my name and said that I worked at a small radio station in Bladensburg Md., called WPGC with a disc jockey by the name of Jim Elliott. Glenn said: "Holy shit! You're Woodside?, want to trade autographs? If I go home and tell my kids that I met Scott Woodside and don't bring home an autograph, they'll never forgive me." That's when I knew that Elliott and I had listeners. Being boarded up in that horrible, nasty ass studio, we had no idea that anyone was listening. Boy were we wrong. God, if I could just go back to DC and work on the radio again. The guys that are still there are lucky and maybe I should hold a seminar for all the radio managers in DC and talk to the talent and let them know how freaking fortunate they are that they're still a part of DC radio. Probably my biggest mistake in life was accepting a job in Atlanta right after Elliott and I parted company. I should have stayed in DC and would still be on the air having the time of my life. I feel like fred flinstone when (at the end of the show every week) he'd throw out the cat and the cat would run back inside the house and Fred was locked out...banging on the door and yelling: "Wilma let me in...Wilmaaaa! Somewhere along the line I lost the key to the door and no matter how hard I've tried over the years, I just can't seem to pick the lock. You know, the most frustrating thing I have to deal with? When so many people remember how much fun they used to have listening to E and W. People still remember as if it were yesterday. I just came back from a 7 day cruise and sitting at our table was a couple that grew up listening to Elliott and Woodside. Yes, it's great to be remembered but it also hurts like a mother F*** when you've tried everything there is to get back into a market you love, but you can't. Anyway, just some random thoughts Dave! Keep up the great work... Scott Woodside--The normal half of Elliott and Woodside (11/6/06) Dave's response: Good to hear from you Scott. Heck, there are many folks who really miss those great days of "Elliot And Woodside" on WPGC. I remember moving down to the DC area in 1972 when I was 14, and 95.5/1580 immediately became one of my favorite stations..... Wrong. Sam Huff has been making these kinds of mistakes since day one. Maybe not as many, but it has always been part of the schtick. Football isn't brain surgery you know. Chill. (11/6/06) Dave, Please hold these people's hands and walk them to the bathroom like a 3 year old. I know some of them think of you as God. But people bitching to you about what they hear on the radio is pathetic. It was great that last week the Redskins didn't play, because I didn't have anything to read on your site about people crying about Triple XXX radio. Here we go again today. www.redzebrabroadcasting com is the website, there's like 10 e-mail address there. You don't complain to your wife that your boyfriend isn't sucking your dick well enough, so why tell Dave about Sam or cutting away to commericals. I know you post the last part, but I had to say it. (11/6/06) So it's 4:54 Monday, and I'm listening to Joe Gibbs' presser from Redskin Park for some odd reason on XXX. Not expecting anything meaty, since Gibbs is a rambling grandpa of a human fillibuster in front of the mic. Maybe I just needed to hear one more "fought our guts out" cliche. Ah, my favorite. Well, low and behold, Gibbs opens the presser with his voice wavering a bit like he's nervous, and states that he has "some important things to say before getting started." Whoa. Okay, I'm now idling in my car, ears a-perked. So what does Dan Snyder's low-wattage three-piece house band do? IT GOES TO F***** BREAK!!!! That's right. The "source" for all things Redskins, cuts away from Gibbs in mid-sentence! And none of the guys in the studio even offer an apologetic disclaimer like: "Sorry we have to cut away, we promise to play the whole thing top of next hour." Great work. I understand top of the hour network breaks, but come on! Even Sportstalk 980, used to break formatics for notable Gibbs pressers. And yet Triple ZZZ couldn't? After running into my house to flip on Comcast, I find out that it was only Gibbs spinning the blame on him, away from his Sugar Daddy Danny. Sigh. Oh well. Still, funny that XXX can't even break it's own format for Lord Gibbs. God forbid he someday says something noteworthy: like "Archuleta was our version of Ishtar." Or "watch for flying pigs, because Jason Campbell is starting tomorrow." Rob C. in Bethesda (11/6/06) The rolls of registered voters are public record, and the data is available in various forms. One way to search is for recent registrations or recent changes, and that's probably where your absentee ballot showed up. sbf (11/6/06) Funny how when I mentioned three weeks ago that Sam Huff seems to be not aware of his surroundings on many occasions there were a number of responses telling me that "it is part of the act" or some such baloney. Now we have two people who cite instances yesterday where Sam didn't seem to know what was going on. I listened to the entire game in the car and I can't count the number of times where Sonny and Larry Michael either corrected him or ignored him because of his mistakes. I have listened to Sonny and Sam for as long as they have been on the radio and this is not some "act". (11/6/06) Dave ol boy--after looking at the pictures you put on from the dinner, are you sure you are not the "travelocity gnome"? ...come on now..fess up! :)) where's my guaranteeeeeeeeeeee??? (11/6/06)Dave's response: My "official" rather mysterious image is at the right. Gnome? Ha ha ha..... From defamer.com: Tom Cruise Still Might Get That Amusement Park Money... The NY Post reports that Daniel Snyder, the Redskins owner and amusement park magnate who helped suddenly homeless megastar Tom Cruise in his darkest, post-Paramount moments by offering the actor an unconventional exchange of production company overhead for high-profile mascot services, might also be interested in funding his pal's ventures at the newly resuscitated United Artists: Snyder, who threw the box-office star a multimillion dollar life of an overhead and development cost deal days after Cruise was booted off Paramount's lot, looks like he may be interested in funding movies for the new United Artists stakeholder. Over the last two months Snyder has been actively meeting with Hollywood talent agencies - including Creative Artists Agency, which reps Cruise - to get advice about how to break into the film business, according to two sources with knowledge of the meetings. [...] A Snyder cash infusion would be a huge win for Cruise, who returned from his Sumner Redstone banishment last week with everything but investment cash to fund his projects in hand. But just as quickly as you can say "show me the amusement park money," the Post finds an anonymous source who thinks that Cruise and MGM just want to play people like Snyder for suckers... (11/6/06) Question to the mailbag here since there are so many smart informed people here....... Is it legal in Maryland for any county executive's election campaign to have access to the list of absentee ballot voter requests for the purposes of mailing out campagn materials for a variety of candidates? I know for a fact that my county executive got my contact info this way (I won't name names). I know this due to a glitch in that candidate's automated computerized mailing system that generated campaign materials in such a way that I am absolutely 100% certain I can prove that my contact info about me came from my absentee ballot request and no other way. Basically, I specifically requested an absentee ballot in an identifying manner knowing I could not ever in a million years receive mail addressed to me in this way. The only way this campaign mailing could have been sent to me is if my county executive's campaign staff got access to my address through my specific absentee ballot request through county government computers. Anyone know if this is legal and if so, why should it be? If you wonder why everyone thinks the state of Maryland is a corrupt government state, this is good reason. WBAL's JANE MILLER, are you listening? (11/6/06) Dave, re your rant of today: WMAL tries to exist in a very left-leaning city and a liberal "inside the Beltway" audience. They do what they do, but I do agree that some changes must be made. Once that is accomplished, the station will return to its greatness. -Silvie in Waldorf- (11/6/06) ("WJLA-TV 7 has redesigned their website www.wjla.com") Expect some pre-emptions (hey, there is one tonight for "Wheel") in the near future to pay for the improvements. Who needs to see the reair of "Grey's Anatomy" on Fridays? (11/6/06) Clinton Portis dropped a F bomb during the post game show yesterday from the locker room. After the F word he asked if there was a delay. They told him no. Quite funny. JRB (11/6/06) Saw the new DnM commercial last night. Great job guys. It must have been the only entry in their little contest. What a colossal pieces of shit and waste of space that was. No wonder the suits at JFK were leery of putting this on air. WOW! That was useless. Their time has come and gone, I wish they would ALL spread their wings and fly away. Tim in Warrenton (11/6/06) Can't wait for the Christmas music at WASH-FM. When does it start, next week? (11/6/06) Dave's response: When Bill Hess says so, it will happen..... "I listened to the first half of the Redskins/Dallas game on the radio. Oh my goodness, Sam Huff is done." I listened to about half the game on radio yesterday and I'd have to agree. He really is eff'd up. In fact that entire broadcast is just bad. Larry Michael is an annoying jackass. Stop yelling at the refs you dope. Sonny is a likeable guy but he's surrounded by idiots. Second, who's the producer of the Red Zebra post game show? Jesus! Passing the show to the locker room and no one is there, the guys at the post game location (restaurant?) sound like they swallowed the mic (distorted as hell). Nice production values. (11/6/06) There is a reason why it is called The Don AND Mike show...........it takes 2......Steven Tyler/Joe Perry, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons....hell...even Cagny and that tramp Lacy..............The show doesn't work well with only one of them (the ONLY exception being when Don came on as himself his first day back - some of THE single most riveting radio in ages.....) I think I speak for many when I say, it has to be the 2 of them to put on an outstanding program ~Mista Bone (11/6/06) DCRTV Dave I was looking at those pictures from the WQCB banquet....I didn't realize you'd been in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy........ is Mr. Jerry Clark still in radio? ...... you know I'd listen to an internet radio station with many of these former jocks!....... while watching yesterday's myriad of football games a question came to mind once again..... do the networks use different quality cameras for different events.... I guess what I'm try to get at is the FOX games the picture quality is pretty good but the CBS games seem to be a bit blurry(even if the game was suppose to be in HD) but the SNF on NBC the picture quality was fantastic...now I got a 5 year old tv but methinks there's something to do with either camera quality or other aspects of transmitting the pictures that has some affect on this....... and speaking of picture quality I swear to gawd ESPN must have the worst cameras in the business because many a college basketball game they show the picture is just awful and frankly the pro basketball games ain't fantastic ,I even think the picture quality is better on TBS, is this all in my mind from one too many brewed beverages ......... Bill Smith from my couch (11/6/06) Dave's response: You bastard! I'm never going to leave my unfinished basement again. Ha ha ha..... I listened to the first half of the Redskins/Dallas game on the radio. Oh my goodness, Sam Huff is done. This guy doesn't have clue. He seems to not know the rules, the players and or anything else regarding the game. For example, at one point in the game while the Redskins were on offense and Sam Huff predicts the next play by saying "the Redskins will probably run play action on this play" and Sonny responds "they can't run play action Sam because they're in the shotgun". That is just one example of many in the first half where Huff came across as a blabbering idiot. Even Sonny and Larry Michael seem to have grown tired of him and sometimes don't even respond to some of the things he says. At one point he states that 'Terrell Owens should be put to sleep', trying to make light of reports earlier that TO falls asleep in meetings; however, this comment was met by silence by his broadcast partners. It might be time for another shakeup in that booth. (11/6/06) /\ November 6 Messages /\ ![]() \/ November 5 Messages \/ I was out last night at a bar in Arlington when I ran into (a major local Clear Channel radio personality). I've seen and spoken to him before... He said there are definitely more changes in store for CC. He expects that Ben and Brian will be next to go and that Elliot would not be leaving DC101. Here's a thought... getting rid of everyone else at CC frees up money to keep Elliot. He wants syndication and I don't think Red Zebra can give that to him unless Snyder buys WAVA. 101 will go down the tubes if Elliot leaves. (11/5/06) My guesses for who will get the golden kick-out-the-door at WRC and what the station will do next are: Out: George Michael, Barbara Harrison, Susan Kidd, Pat Collins, Jim Handly (Bonus push: Tom Kierein). Changes: Pat Lawson-Muse to mornings, Vance and Gentzler to do 4pm and 6pm, Shannon Bream plus new dude at 5 and 11 (cutting the dead wood will mean they can afford to "groom" someone from another market to be the eventual "main man" when Vance retires). Reiger back to weekends paired up with Adams. Arch Campbell will stay on, but won't be renewed when his contract expires. Time they brought someone in to be the eventual replacement for Bob Ryan too. How about Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel? Dean, Falls Church, VA (11/5/06) NBC Washington’s One-Man-Ban at the White House continues to be a headache for those watching MSNBC. In the last week or so a reporter was hit 2 times in the head with an umbrella due a slight breeze. It is good Mr Ohm was not injured. Audio continues to be a problem during live shots. Mostly because it is missing or really bad audio. I bet if the Ad Sales force at MSNBC is hearing channels switching as the money walks away. I have heard the correspondents for NBC affiliates complaining about how bad the audio was during the Foley thing. NBC DC sent a OMB and ended up with no Audio. While the other networks sent full crews. Larry Gaetano is defending the practice saying he is going for the I-Pod generation. But this only shows that Larry knows little to nothing about TV or I-Pods. If the I-Pod or TV has no audio no one will watch. So far NBC has lost more 10 live shots due to audio problems in 3 months including the today show..... From 10-29 Sunday: We lost audio feed at the WHNL audio feed on WH-1 at 11am. Maintenance will look into this problem on Monday. (11/5/06) To: Silvie in Waldorf. There's a reason you saw more about Borat and Kerry's attempt at humor on the news than Bush's "accomplishments", it's because North Korea was influenced more by China into rejoining the 6-party talks, a resurgent Taliban is gaining more and more control in Afghanistan (thanks to Georgies adventures in Iraq), and Iran has been far from quiet in the last few days. Not as that would get reported in the so called "liberal media". Also would the politicians please leave the comedy to the comedians and shut the hell up, you think Kerry would have learned from Trent Lott. (11/5/06) What happened to Mark & Kris? We have decided not to renew Mark and Kris' contract. They were mean muthas and we canned 'em. Nuff said..... Where's Teapot Tim? Teapot left to model suimsuits for Speedo..... What's coming next for Hot 99.5? Business news in stereo..... (11/5/06) You have probably seen this already, but here is Hot 99.5's spin on the firing of the Hot Morning Mess www.hot995.com (11/5/06) It looks as though you were certainly enjoying the WQCB banquet Saturday… One thing I can’t figure out: You are a handsome dude and you’re hiding that good-looking face behind a forest of facial hair! Now, you don’t want people saying that you are some gnome or something… so maybe a little trim is in order. (11/5/06) Ok CC Issues......not sure who the other person commenting on things is, but they are partially correct. But first PLEASE REMOVE the HOT HUNKS of Hot 995 I was sick of Mark K then and still now.Albie has a way of antagonizing folks, but you have to be a little full of yourself to crack that mic everyday regardless of what has happened during the day. Mark and Kris DESERVE the abuse. So give it to them both barrels if you want to hammer someone. They tortured everyone around them including humiliating "Teapot Tim" Coburn almost everyday all in "Good Fun". I'm glad he got out, and his web site looks great btw. Ron Ross the man was a class act through and through. Now Ben and Brian. Not so sure about the whole corporate thing. Jeff Wyatt was kissing their asses non-stop to get them up here, and offering them everything under the sun to get them to sign. As far as million dollar show, of course BZ wanted it. He had been chomping at the bit to have a notable syndicated show coming from Rockville. He had to save face from his losing attempts with Elliot. When all is sa id and done you could thank BZ and Wyatt for making that place the mess it was/is. Kapugi and crowd are just cleaning up all the crap. They may want to temper their new MD a little bit though. She has great admin skills, but is fast becoming a new target for people to hate. Remember where you came from and what it was like when you started little girl. All in all people ---- working here is a lesson in stress management, politics, and watching your back. Radio will never be what it once was and we can thank Clear Channel for that! (11/5/06) Will Thomas has such thick and luxurious black hair. What is his secret? Also, not much has been said about the first week of the November book. (11/5/06) Dave's response: You got some numbers? Let us know..... Dave: More so than Borat and Sen. Kerry influencing the mid-term elections, I wanted to see more news last week on how Bush got N. Korea to again join the 6-party talks (this is an important step that was very seldom reported), how he rooted out the Taliban and now NATO is in control in Afghanistan, how he got Lybia to disarm, how he got Iran to quiet down. After 6 years in office and a few more years under his belt in state govt., I trust that the president knows his ass from his elbow. The Borat movie is hilarious, but I seriously doubt that it'll make a dent for voters on Tuesday (the Kerry snafu is dying down, too)... -Silvie in Waldorf- (11/5/06) Did anyone mention at the WQCB event last night that it was Hillary Howard's birthday? (11/5/06) Dave's response: Rush, it's an honor to hear from you..... Dave, re your rant of today: I doubt that the Borat movie will have much influence in our mid-term elections... remember when "Team America: World Police" came out shortly before the '04 elections? That movie cast America as a bunch of ignorant, gun-toting Neanderthals -- and Bush won handily that year, including the House and the Senate. If anything, I think that the Borat movie will remind some Americans that there are people all over the world who don't understand US foreign policy. -Silvie in Waldorf- (11/5/06) Dave's response: Well, if John Kerry, who is not even running this year, is going to be a factor, I'd have to assume that Borat will be, too. Maybe even bigger..... Dave, nice gallery of the WQCB photos. Think you could take a minute and caption the photos.... tell us who they are? Some of us young un's haven't seen some of these people before and it would be nice to put a face with an old voice from our radio listening past. Aja (11/5/06) So Dave, the rumor mill is saying that five NBC4 staffers have been offered early out packages, huh?.. Because the rumor didn't specifiy on air talent, maybe these cuts only include behind the scenes people..If on air talent is on the chopping block, the obvious choices, because of age, will more than like include Jim Vance, George Michael, Pat Collins, Bob Ryan, Babs Harrison and possibly James Adams (not really sure of his age)..But, I can't imagine NBC4 getting rid of all in this group..True, Babs' on air presence is beginning to suffer with her mumbling and stumbing in the mornings..Maybe they'll do to her what WUSA did with J.C.Hayward..Give Barbara some "executive" job offscreen..Maybe something to do with human interest stories and/or more involvement with the Wednesday's Child segments. As for Jim Vance, George Michael, Bob Ryan and Pat Collins, I think they're too popular for the station to get rid of them and could possibly decrease NBC4's viewing audience..But hey, then again, anything's possible these days.. (11/5/06) Thank you Albie for understanding...and good luck to you with whatever gigs you get...Misha (11/5/06) Dave, Great meeting you last night. I've never known a "one man news bureau before!" I haven't used this upload program much, so I'm not quite sure exactly how it works. Keep up the GREAT WORK! -Lee (11/5/06) Dave's response: Thanks to the great Lee Shephard. Great meeting you, too! Hey, Any info on why terry ford and jeremy left the station (WNST). even though I work at the q, I am a sports talk junkie. (11/5/06) Thank you to all who helped with WQCB this year: Pat O'Donnell and Anee Raulerson and the staff at AFTRA for organizing the event; David Burd for emceeing (Georgie Jessell couldn't have done it better); Virginia Whitehead, Mac McGarry, Bill Mayhugh, Joe Krebs, and Bill Trumbull (with his 's wonderful tale) for their stories; Tom Buckley, Don Richards, Susan O'Kelly, Ed Walker, Ed Gursky, and John Dowling for the great entertainment; WQCB Chief Engineer Charlie Carson; the Entertainment Committee, especially Bob Duckman, Chris Roth (thanks for the great gift!), Mike Lewis and Julie Wright, for their input, support and ideas; Dave Hughes, for letting us use DCRTV to spread the word (and he continues to allow us access despite the awful things David Burd said about him ... get a lawyer Dave ... there are plenty of witnesses ... some of them even sober); and, of course, our friend Walt Starling who helped make sure all of these wonderful people still get together each year. For all who attended, thank you, Please remember your assignments for next year: Bring some sort of memorabilia from stations where you have worked and get airchecks into the hands of John Dowling so he can add to his tape (this means you Trumbull!). See you next year, same time, same station. Dave Statter (11/5/06) Good Sunday morning Dave and all, Alternative Rock Radio returns to the Delaware Valley via 93.7-2 HD and on the web via www.graffitiradio.com. Enjoy yet another alternative to CC and Free FM. Dean in Southern MD (11/5/06) (BIG-100 COULD equal "Movin' 100) Unlikely as Movin' skews heavily toward women ( not ethnic women - white suburban chicks... read the Burns description of the product) It wouldn't be a great move for CC since it might eat into WASH. And BM is right, to a lesser extent the urban's would give it a run for it's money. That said, Clear Channel has made plenty of stupid moves in the past. Jammin' Oldies comes to mind. In spite of research that told them NOT to do Jammin' in Washington, then honcho Jimmy DeCastro insisted that the format be implemented. Regarding Ben & Brian -- This was a corporate choice - not local. The CC suits wanted Ben and Brian out of Phoenix because they were decimating the CC country product there. BZ never wanted the whole Murphy and Cash thing to happen on BIG and he certainly didn't want a million dollar morning show on MZQ... and while I'm no fan (personally or professionally) of Albie Dee, the shit that's been said about him on the board is just freaking cruel. (11/5/06) WMAL has a new real estate show on Sunday mornings at 10 called "Right At Home" with Rick Fowler, along with two other co-hosts. This show bumps off ABCNews' "Perspectives", which used to air at that hour. Governor Ehrlich called in this morning to talk about the MD housing market. Fowler also has a show on Saturday mornings, aptly called "Saturday Morning Update", from 6-8 a.m. It's a review of the news of the day, with guest commentary. -Silvie in Waldorf- (11/5/06) When did WXRA joined WPIK radio in the early days?? rob (11/5/06) (1) Re: WRBS... Thank you for the enlightening post on its billing. I can see that Peter and John might be moving the station to several rimshotters instead of 95.1. However, wouldn't a more likely target be Family Radio's WFSI? I have heard unsubstantiated reports that they are thinking of selling WFSI. A possible play might be Red Zebra buying 95.1 from Peter and John, and Peter and John buying 107.9 from WFSI. I like WRBS in many ways, even if I didn't like Christian contemporary music. It sounds more "homey" than many too-slick stations in the area. --- (2) Mr. Dee: Don't let people get you down. If you're good, you're good, and you'll find some place you can exercise your talents. Radio has too many people competing for too few slots, so the backbiting can be terrible. --- (3) Is Bonneville putting Viva La Voce on 104.1 - 2? I bought my Boston Acoustic yesterday but can't find the station, and I'm an opera buff. -- (4) WETA: Put World Radio Network on your #2 and the BBC World Service on your #3 when you get that far. -- GAB in the Airless Cubicle (I missed St. Helena Day!) (11/5/06) Dave's response: I think it would be a brilliant (!) move for Mr. Dee to go to WJFK-FM and do a talk show. I think he'd be great at it. And then, when Mr. Don retires in '08, 106.7 might just have a well-tested replacement afternoon show. Heck, why not pair Albie and Peter Rosenberg. It might an explosive mix - but great radio, too. As for WFSI, we've long heard rumblings that the station was up for sale, but nothing ever materialized. How about Radio One making a play for 107.9 for an FM gospel outlet for DC and Baltimore? Or, Radio One could buy WRBS and put WWIN-FM there - moving the weakish 95.9 onto the strong 95.1. Hmmm..... Thanks so much for the McDonald's Application.I will fill it out and send it in this week.I'll let you know what store i get a gig at and then come by I'll hook you up with free French fries... Albie Dee (11/5/06) No-WMAL is not the flagship for Maryland sports. WHFS/WJFK is-and they have two options for post game coverage-the network with Johnny Holliday-and the local/sub network with the CBS staff. The one you were hearing was the CBS post game (WHFS). WMAL does not carry the entire post game. (11/5/06) I have officially lost all FAITH in The Baltimore SUN with this blatantly (my opinion) ANTI-CATHOLIC/ANTI-RELIGIOUS story that is just so false I don't even know where to start in disputing it..... [ " Like Coates, some Baltimore-area Catholics are quietly questioning the spending of more than $32 million to restore the basilica " ] www.baltimoresun.com... THIS IS JUST SIMPLY NOT TRUE! And yes, I am Catholic, but not associated with the church in any official way, haven't shown up in church in years even! But, this story ticked me off today because it's nothing but a nutjob PHONY CONTROVERSY story. Sun reporter Liz F. Kay should be fired for finding ONE dissenting opinion and listening to a bunch of whackjob preservationist anti-christian nutjobs who wanted to save a falling down ugly drug-ridden infested building (the crack house next to the Basilica) that only nutcases were trying to save instead of preserving one of America's most historically precious religious buildings (designed even by the same person who designed the U.S. Capitol!). And YES, I've been to St. Peter Claver church as well. They do a lot of good for a depressed area of Baltimore that is not doing so well. The Catholic church does not have to stay there, they could close up tomorrow if they wanted to and save money. They very much CHOOSE to STAY there for a purpose. I'm not sure what this nutjob SUN reporter's "purpose" was in this story, but it is so wrong that in my opinion, it's blatantly anti-catholic if not just plain anti-religious. This particular controversy about the Basilica restoration project is ONLY in the SUNPAPER reporter's mind! Do us a favor Ted Venetoulis, please fire this Sun reporter FIRST when you take over The Baltimore SUN and we'll all be thankful. I hate to be so bitter, but this story is just so phony it's not funny. It's a made-up controversy that does not even exist. Even as a christmas and easter catholic, it offends me. (11/5/06) The MD football flagship station is 105.7/WHFS in Baltimore. At least one post-game call-in number ends in "1057". I was in my car coming back from Pennsylvania listening to the game and to my surprise the station (not WMAL) had a post-game show similar to what you hear after the Redskins play. An 800 number for people from all over the state to call. Then I checked around the dial and found two other stations with the post-game show. I tuned in WMAL and they had on some stupid estate planning show that probably had seventeen listeners. Only TB was way too hip for those rooms. Stations like pre-Metromedia WASH and WPIK would mix "Pop Standards" (largely instrumentals) by Mantovani, Skitch Henderson, Andre Kostelanetz, The 101 Strings, etc. with light classical excerpts of movements from composers like Vivaldi and Mozart. They also mixed a lot of showtunes in. Now that I think about it, those were not hideously horrid formats. I've been craving a great old-line middle-of-the-road format lately. The maroons that program XM and Sirius are SO unabashedly stoned and stupid that they don't understand that great radio is about so much more than the music! The forties channel is just a jukebox. So is the fifties channel, by and large. Even Terry Young's Top 40 recreations, while valiant attempts, fall far, far short of capturing the real spirit of those stations. It always sounds like Terry Young "motormouthing" his way through the elements of those stations. A true student would recall and/or research the different tempos, energy levels and other stylistic changes from station to station and market to market. Any ape can play the jingles and scream through name of the city. I truly enjoyed the well thought and well written analysis of doings at 1801 Rockville Pike. I hope that they do not get rid of Elliott. It would certainly doom DC-101 for a few years. BIG-100 COULD equal "Movin' 100," although I do not think that the format would fare well in this market with stiff competition from WKYS, WPGC, WMMJ and WHUR. Dave, you referred to "Movin'" as unlikely because it is a "CBS" format. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Movin' brand is property of Alan Burns' consultancy. He has placed it on a number of sticks under different ownership. I, sadly for the listeners' sake, think that Ben and Brian may have a bit more shelf life left. CC does not have an instant replacement. Laurie DeYoung's show is SO locally oriented towards Baltimore that it would flop anywhere else. Here's a novel, if tongue-in-cheek, idea; "Wake-up With Whoopi's" first Country affiliate! Heck, it's supposed to be mass-appeal to 25-54 females, right? I still think that she'll wind up on WASH-FM and that Loo and Lorie are toast. Now, between WMZQ and WPOC, it's a smorgasbord. Bob Delmont sucks on-air, but he will voice-track 500 stations, do a midday show and probably wax Kapugi's and Pugh's vehicles to keep his job. London has some talent, but man, he sounds SO tired. And, that double-faced time is annoying as hell. Seth Warner is innocuous and Michael J. Fox, although a hideous puker, brings more entertainment value to the table. Come to think of it, Meg Stevens could hire a much better talent for the price of one of those hacks and put him/her on both sticks. Evenings, you keep the "Love Lines" guy on WPOC and put "Lia's Country Nights" on WMZQ. Final thought... in Cleveland, I think Meg Stevens voice-tracked the evening show. Why couldn't or wouldn't she do the same for PM drive on WPOC/WMZQ. Wow! I think I've got the hang of this budget-chopping, consolidating mindset. Oh, one more thing. Whatever morning show winds up on WMZQ will also wind up on WFRE. Why pay those two another nickel? They suck and are getting their market share quickly eroded by the morning show on Key-103. Just look at the spring numbers! The Big BM... aka General BullMoose (11/4/06) Just sending more kudos to Mike O'Meara and thanks for a really enjoyable two days! It was so refreshing to hear him talk, since Don generally doesn't give him much time, and he actually has stuff to say! Very refreshing and entertaining. Don't get me wrong, I love when Don talks about inside radio stuff and about his weekend/home life, but man I guess I'd love it if they BOTH did it! Anyway, I guess mike is going to be a-ok when Don retires in a few years. We'll stick with ya', Mr. O'Meara, wherever ye may be! Hey---how come Mike used to automatically call in sick whenever Don did, and that doesn't happen anymore? Did he lose out in a contract negotiation (or did Don?)? My mom says Don probably kept him off the air because he's threatened by him---would have laughed before, but now I wonder, Is she right? (11/4/06) Dave's response: It used to be that when Don was sick, the show went into rerun mode. And a lot of daily listeners simply tuned out. But they don't tune out when there's a live show, even when Don is missing. Look, don't get me wrong. Don is a legendary radio talent. But Mike is, too, when he gets the chance to shine. And Robb, Buzz, and, yes, even Joe, shouldn't be underestimated. A show with "only" Mike, Robb, Buzz, and Joe still features top-grade radio comedy - and is better than most other afternoon choices on the DC area radio dial, IMHO..... I was watching Inside Washington on WETA this (Friday) evening. Every time Charles Krauthammer spoke, there was some kind of audio glitch, a low rumble in the background which made him sound like Darth Vader. (11/4/06) My guess is, and this is just a wild guess, that the five "buyouts" at NBC4 are: Joe Krebs, Barb Harrison, Pat Lawson-Muse, Susan Kidd and -gasp! - Bob Ryan. Bonus buyout: Wendy Rieger. I'm not in the business, so don't get all "medieval" on me... it's a guess. -Silvie in Waldorf- (11/4/06) Dave -- I can't believe in your response to the poster announcing the Sun's endorsement of Cardin you didn't correct the reference to "NBC Face the Nation's Tim Russert making him (Cardin) stammer himself silly." NBC FACE THE NATION TIM RUSSERT!!!??? (caps intended) -- Bobbie (11/4/06) How much is CC worth? Is it out of The Danny's reach to make a play for it himself? It might stretch him rather thin and it may not be allowed, but consider the possibilities. LO (11/4/06) Let's reflect on some of the recent and future changes taking place at 1801. WMZQ - George King is out and the new chick will program WMZQ and WPOC. It's only a few months before the rest of those two stations are combined. Ben & Brian are gone by the beginning of 07. Too much salary for too little ratings and revenue. Hot 99.5 - Kapugi got rid of the dead weight. Albie was worthless. Julian was a preteen one-trick pony. KT sounded great on-air but was a headcase and too much to deal with behind the scenes. And then there's the Morning Mess. Talk about living up to your name. Mark is talented but too full of shit to realize his own talent. Kris gives new meaning to the phrase "coat tail rider". Neither of them did anything for anyone other than themselves. Their self-proclaimed ratings dominance does not make up for their inability to work with people or to care about listeners. You don't have to look past the throng of 20 at Starbucks this morning to see their popularity. Now Hot brings in a bunch of no-names to promote the MUSIC. Remember, that's isn't a personality-driven station - it's a music station. Human CD players playing a very tight playlist equals success for that format. WBIG - Ballard gets put out to pasture as the new morning guy. Translation - your contract is too much for us to swallow so you'll languish in old rock hell for now. And, um, yeah, what else do you talk about with that station? DC101 - Elliot, Elliot and more Elliot. That's all there is to talk about with that station. And when his contract is up late Summer of next year and he's not on those airwaves, that station is doomed. He's great. He's expensive. AND He's a risk taker - CCDC are not risk takers. They haven't renewed his contract yet and to the posters that think he won't go work at WJFK - you're right. He won't go to Red Zebra either. He'll leave the market and the most people can hope for is that he's syndicated back here. As for the rest of the departments in that building, the Angel of Death is coming. Get ready for some sweeping changes in EVERY department. Realignment. Elimination of positions. Saving a buck. It's the CC way! (11/4/06) To "GAB in the Airless Cubicle" .......... Having bought advertising spots from WRBS 95.1 and other Baltimore area radio and TV stations, I can tell you WRBS not only bills less than secular stations, but it's actually less than 50%, and in some cases 25% of what a similar commercial station would, even one with poor ratings. I wasn't trying to suggest that Peter and John Fellowship is losing money on Baltimore's FM 95.1. I know for a fact that is not the case. I was just suggesting that they might be able to do the same thing with a much less expensive radio station or stations since they just bought a radio station in the same market that they already own a radio station. Maybe they are just keeping their options open, I dunno. But WRBS 95.1 completely BLANKETS the entire signal area of WITH AM 1230, which makes it difficult to understand why they want the station. I find it hard to believe this purchase was done to just expand their signal reach or marketing ability. Maybe I'm wrong, but I have a hunch here. (11/4/06) It's about time all this boring crap stop. Sell 1300 Baltimore to Greater Media and put Real Oldies 1300 on the air. This area is very boring for radio. (11/4/06) /\ November 4 Messages /\ ![]() \/ November 3 Messages \/ [FCC news... The Peter and John radio fellowship (owners of WRBS 95.1 Baltimore, former owners of WUTB 24) have officially taken over control of WITH AM 1230 Baltimore. Question, are they looking to downsize their operation once again and sell FM 95.1?] --- Answer: No, they need 95.1, just like Salem needs 105.1. FM stations are the trend for all formats in the DC/Baltimore area, and Christian radio works in this area. There are three Christian stations in the area, WAVA, WRBS, and WGTS, and they all survive. They don't bill as much for commercials as secular stations, but they get paid for much of their time from the ministries on the air (who int turn depend on listener contributions). WITH used to be synchroed with WAVA, but now WAVA has WABS back, and it's surplus to their needs (but would be a useful supplement to WRBS). I don't think people realize how popular these stations are. If WAVA was willing to sell, don't you think Dan Snyder would have bought the station by now to obtain penetration for Red Zebra? I don't deny that if someone throws enough money at Salem or Peter and John, they might sell; however, they have a loyal listenership now that pays the bills. -- GAB in the Airless Cubicle (11/3/06) Several points on NBC4 & possible turnover: First, the anchor crew is getting old, literally. How old is Vance; how old is George; how old (and sick) is Arch? Second, forget about the upcoming and sweeping changes from the top brass; the new team would probably turn over anyway, in the next 48 months, or so. Second: Dave, who are the rumored people that may be getting the ax? Third: George Michael does have complete control over the sports department. He also makes well over $1 million per year. He has gotten noticably more crotchety as he has gotten older. His ego is still there, though. With that said, he's still the best in this market. And he's also a cocky prick! It only takes one trip to northern VA driving in a car on I-95 to realize the Repubs in Richmond have F'd up the NoVA highway system. It's mindless, poorly planned, & under-funded by VA govt. If I were in those traffic jams, I would be voting Democrat just for spite out of anger. It seems like all of the highway funds have gone to Richmond (very nice clean quiet wide beltway) and Norfolk (incredible number of expensive bridges). VA even fought tooth and nail not wanting to fund the Wilson Bridge! Up in Maryland, its just an anti-monopoly mentality plus the Democratic party's lip-service to African-Americans. The Democrat party in Maryland is becoming a huge behemoth like Microsoft to many people I think. What is it they say about "absolute power"? In Maryland, that's called "super-majority". Not good. Virginia, at least is competitive. I actually would love to see Maryland go Republican and Virginia go Democrat. I think we need divided government again. Dem House and Repub Senate, Bush gone. First, ANG, if you had been anywhere near Chicago in 1961, when Dick Biondi arrived at WLS from WKBW, you would know that he created a sensation in that city. He did 9PM-12Midnight and said things that were unspeakable, like making fun of his bosses, the commercials and the songs. That kind of thing just wasn't done then. His impact equaled that of Howard Stern in NYC and DC. In fact, Biondi far surpassed Stern with Hooper shares in the 50's! (Disclaimer- There were far fewer signals and choices in those days. WLS was the ONLY rock and roll station for much of MidAmerica.) The fact that Dick had a funny voice and sounded more like a punk kid only added to his appeal with college and high school listeners. Now, go find a WLS tribute site and see the impact Dick had at KRLA in Los Angeles, on the Mutual Network and in the concert promotion field. He is a talented pioneer that is still embraced by the city that gave him his greatest fame. So, Steve Campbell might have done a show or two on WOL... in 1975!?! That station was in intensive care... make that LIFE SUPPORT... by 1975! WOL was only WOL... the winning Soul Radio... from 1965 until 1971 or 72. By '75, The Big 'OL was done! Soul Poppa made his mark at WUST, regardless of a few white boys who are trying to repaint history with a different brush! WPIK was above Virginia Theater for several years before their move to King Street. I'm thinking that they left the hotel in the late fifties or VERY early 60's! The still had the old sound effects box and the baby grand piano in the production studio (not to be confused with the production control room) until 1973 or 74. I was always told that the piano was there for the Arlington Symphony's Lunchtime Concerts, which were broadcast live in the early to mid fifties, during WPIK's days as an easy listening and classical music station. As far as those you mentioned, I don't gobble chicken feed from also-rans. I feed it to them... boyeeeeee... General Bullmoose... or, you can call me Luther! Time to practice some ANGer management :) (11/3/06) No offense but how many hours does Arch Campbell actually work on channel 4? I only seem to see him for MAYBE 2 minutes on Friday night. How much does he get paid? Darren (11/3/06) Dave's response: Didn't you know? Arch is also Channel 4's weekend night monster movie host..... Do you know what happened to the morning guy and Jeremy Cahn on WNST. (11/3/06) Dave's response: They're gone, apparently..... Any chance that Pat Collins is on the short list to be whacked at WRC? I am sure that there is a station out there in which would find his delivery endearing, but not a top 10 market. (11/3/06) I really enjoy the D&M show yesterday. I was evening looking forward to the drive home. It was a breath of fresh air in a seriously stagnant format. Couldn't they take separate vacations? Way to go Mike, Rob and Buzz! (11/3/06) Wow, didja hear a sick Don call into the show today and brutally rip Robbay a new one? Even said he might fire Rob. Yikes! If CBS is selling some of their NC stations, maybe BA could return as the show's producer. (11/3/06) Mark and Kris are trying to land a new job. THAT'S the extent they ''care'' about their listeners. Other than that, they could care less. Paul (11/3/06) Dave, you really think Elliott would go to Red Zebra? They have the money to get him, that's for sure. But, don't you think that CBS is going to go after him for WJFK? My be is, he stays at DC101. (11/3/06) Dave's response: CBS may try to land Elliot, but my guess is that he'll follow Bennett Zier, particularly if Red Zebra can get its hands on a decent DC area FMer, like 105.1..... I should`ve been more clear...the Teapot tim thing is from his blog on myspace where he is talking to the listeners about how said he is then plugs the website...thats what i meant...you can put that little disclamer in there... ps...were you here for homecoming? (11/3/06) Dave's response: The Herndon High reunion last summer? No way, Jose..... I just assumed that George Michaels had total say over the sport's department at channel 4....Well there I go assuming again.....I figured that Mr. Hellie was brought in to fill Mr. Bruckner's old role as weekend anchor but that has not been the case so far.....Did someone else at channel 4 have input on signing Mr. Hellie?.. Didn't channel 9 bring in some body to replace Levan Reid? And I don't mean Sara Walsh...... I was traveling the mean streets of Manassass last weekend when I came upon the huge Eastern Motors car lot..Man all that yellow everywhere is blinding.......Why yes, FoxChase was the name of theatre in Alexandria that I believe was run by the gentleman who owned the Biograph...what's wrong with raincoats I have my official Columbo one for special occasions....didn't Henry Rollins work at the Key?.....guest suggestion for Rusty Gibson of WEBR...Mark Opsasnick, who has written several books on the history of rock music in D.C. area and you could also ask him about the Exorcist case... www.capitolrock.com. .......... Bill Smith from the Bunnyman Bridge (11/3/06) In all fairness to Mike O'Meara, I have to agree with Mary Jim's (Just curious, is that like two people posting as one, or is it sort-of a transsexual thing?) comment a few posts below: "Spread your wings, Mike. You're so much more than Don's 'appendage.'" How very true! Bottom line is Mike is forced to dumb it down whenever he solos which isn't natural for him, hence the "bumbling, stumbling" effect I referred to in a previous post. I firmly believe that Mike, if he were (allowed) to "spread his wings," could bring some desperately needed energy and excitement to the "comfy, slightly stinky old shoe" that is the Don and Mike show. However, were he ever to dare such an out-of-the-box transgression during one of his solo stints, he would have HELL to pay. Don is far too insecure to allow such a thing and Mike knows it. The "tooth-whitening" bit yesterday was totally safe - absolutely no out-of-the-box thinking there - no treading into the realm of creativity on Mike's part; which is exactly the way Don wants it! So, keep playin' it safe Mike, we all know the boss couldn't handle it otherwise. Thoughtfully, A. Fan (11/3/06) If I remember correctly Kathleen matthews leaves WJLA Dec. 1, 2006. Isn't it time to name her replacement (presumably Alison Starling)? (11/3/06) Dear Mr. Graham, Your explanation of Dick Biondi was totally hysterical (funny voice, you're too kind"). He has no heart, no soul and no talent. He got the job because his uncle was a "heavy". It's that simple. You want to talk about guys with irritating voices that helped rockers.... how about Johnny Walker or Arnie Ginsburg... Alan Prell or Ed Gra..... ahhhhhhhh, never mind. As for Limbaugh...you're right on target the "windbag". I liked the little blurb about Luber... we know you won't get an invitiation to the "Roast". Change in broadcasting..... Ha, ha, ha...... owners take a second look... ha, ha, ha! ANG (11/3/06) Bob Ryan to Speak at Library of Congress - The Science, Technology & Business division of the Library of Congress has invited NBC4 Chief Meteorologist Bob Ryan to come and speak about current weather trends on Wednesday, November 15 in the Mumford Room, 6th Floor, Madison Building from 11:30 - 12:30pm. It is free and open to the public. NOTE: The Library may choose to videotape this event. If we do so, then it will be posted on our webcast page. (11/3/06) Dave's response: Can't we get a little song and dance, too, from Bob? I hear that when Rush does his upcoming DC appearance, he's going to come out dressed like Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "boo-KAY") and belt out a few show tunes..... Funny...So Mark and Kris apparently care about their listeners so much...In 2 days they`ve done more for the listeners, than they did the whole time they were at the station...When did Mark Kaye have get-togethers with listeners? Oh when he was selling his book...When did Kris Gamble cared to chat all night with her fans...Oh...When she got fired...She even created that myspace page the same day she got fired...and if they cared for listeners that much...why not try and work things out with CC and maybe not to ask for so much money...but nobody wants to work for free Starbucks coffee huh? Mind you I was a huge fan of them, but lately they have gotten all snobby...even though it was over after Tim left, since he made the show and not Mark and not Kris..and Mark apparently had hard time understanding it...the right thing for Mark to do, was to clarify tons of misconceptions that all their little fans have...do you know how many people believe they are #1 rated radio show, since Mark had it plastered all over his website? It isn`t even true...Half of the people up to this day think that Toby and Raven are the new morning show, Mark actually commented on this statement on his myspace page knowing damn well Kane is coming on the 13th...They are so hypocritical, its sickening...not realizing that all of this is going to be forgotten very soon...People will still be driving to work every single day, same ole shit, different day type of the deal...not to mention Kane actually IS very good...so this Morning Mess canning is like Julian`s freekshow x 10...Everyone was upset about Julian for what like...a day? Well this time it`ll last 10 days...This whole thing is stupid and the way Morning Mess themselves handled it, with sad faces on TV talking about "we were just one big Hot 99.5 family"...Yes they were such a family, maybe thats why Mark talked shit just about everyone at the station, on-air, to his listeners...oh and I like how people are their true fans and call them the Hot Mess Morning, Hot Morning Mass, Chris Kaye, its like damn if you listened to them for 5 years, wouldn`t you at least learn their names...haha oh and Teapot is awesome too... Hey all! I'd love to be at Starbucks tomorrow morning but I'll be in NYC for the day working on my new photography career! Let me know if there are any other meeting places or times and I'll be there! BTW: Here is my site! www.timcoburnphoto.com... GOTTA PLUG THE WEBSITE... Mark... if you are reading this (which I am sure you are)... you kinda suck dude... Thank you... Your ex-loyal listener (11/3/06) Dave's response: There is no evidence that the above posting is from the real Teapot Tim Coburn..... STUFF: Back in the early days of Top 40, there were some guys who became legends. Dick Biondi was one of them. ANG, please show a little respect for old people with funny voices. Before the T 40 era there were no announcers with funny voices, so Dick, Russ Knight and many others opened the way for personality radio. * WNST is a good Sports Talk station. Maybe the fact that they have a very bad signal at night prompted the departure of Jeremy. I listened to his show and enjoyed it, but I can see their tower from my window. * Rush is a Big Fat Idiot, please don't write again and tell me he lost weight and is not fat. Just watch his video making fun of a sick person. He is fat, which doesn't make him a Idiot, he did that all by himself. * Last time DC and Baltimore stations made major changes, I hoped for good results. Again this time, I think there may be something good. Change is developmental - - even bad change causes owners to rethink what they did and try again. * Hearst would have to be crazy to sell 98 Rock. Unless they don't have the desire to program a great FM signal in a good market. Why not get Steve Rouse to do afternoons? He can handle mornings on WLIF, a late night TV show, and afternoons on 98 Rock...and run for Mayor. * Frank Luber started in radio when he was 3 years old. My mother loved him and Jack Edwards. Happy roast Frank. Ed Graham (11/3/06) This is from the Washington Post: DJs were the founding fathers and propagandists of Chocolate City. The two black AM radio stations, WOL and WOOK, were driven by personality jocks-the Nighthawk, Sonny Jim Kelso, Mr. C., Soul Poppa the Be-boppa WOL's Big guns..., Big Bill Haywood, Leon "The Lover" Isaacs and others-men who were almost as big as the stars whose music they played. According to Bobby "The Mighty Burner" Bennett, who started a legendary career at WOL in 1968, the DJs had been calling D.C. Chocolate City for three or four years before George Clinton. (11/3/06) I know this is somewhat off topic, but I got a laugh out of the article on movie house closings in DC. I've lived in the DC area for the last 35 years and love foreign and independent films. Until recently, that meant going to the Key, Biograph, Foundry, Janus, Circle, etc. since they were the only theaters that showed this stuff. However, times have changed with Landmark (both E Street and Bethesda), Shirlington, etc. in business. For those who want to experience their art films "old school" style can still visit the Dupont Circle. Finally, the theater in Alexandria mentioned in a previous post was the FOXCHASE which was demolished last year to make way for a new Harris Teeter grocery store. The FOXCHASE was basically a three screen toilet that showed porn on two screens and a legitimate film on the third. I think they did this to get their theater listed in the Washington Post movie sect! ion since they could claim to be a legitimate theater. I went there once to see ALMOST FAMOUS and going through the lobby was a seriously creepy experience. I seemed to be the only one there not wearing a raincoat. D. Nobile (Alexandria) (11/3/06) FOX5 was at Starbucks getting fans reaction to the firing of Mark & Kris. See video at www.fox5dc.com. Fans are speaking out on FOX5's blog. (11/3/06) Dave's response: Everyone here at DCRTV wishes Mark well at his new job at Starbucks. Oh, did anyone hear Mike O'Meara yesterday mentioning seeing "Saw III" in a theater with Cerphe. Small radio world, huh..... Glad to see you trashed the David Collins personal attacks Dave. Only if they had something to do with WBAL's investigative reports, then maybe it'd be worth hearing. It's very interesting though, these DEM personal attacks against him now. Funny. Especially considering that WBAL TV is the ONLY local media outlet that has done ANY election scandal investigations whatsoever among local media, other than CNN (if you consider that local) and WBAL TV coincidentally did several election investigation stories just last night, even about absentee ballots! Oh my god, my Halloween scary story has turned TRUE! I guess I'm really not going to get my absentee ballot afterall. Also, very funny how someone tried to debunk a WBAL TV report BEFORE IT EVEN AIRED! Too funny. I think somebody touched a nerve here. The big question is, where is the REST of the local media?!? After reading this in yesterday's SUN.... www.baltimoresun.com... I really think CNN, MSNBC, or FOX News needs to step into the deep doodoo that is Maryland's general election fraud scandal now that most local news organizations have dropped the ball. The outright politicized judicial election rigging is just unbelievable even by Maryland standards. Doug Gansler is determined to be LEGALLY INELIGIBLE to run for Attorney General of Maryland, but those same judges (all appointed by Democrats I might add) and Maryland's corrupt Attorney General (who is the father-in-law of Mayor Martin O'Malley, surprise, surprise) have all agreed he can stay on the ballot ANYWAY (due to a technicality) even though they agree it violates Maryland's STATE CONSTITUTION!?! UNFRIKKINBELIEVABLE! Now this Gansler guy is going to be Maryland's highest legal authority? Well that will be convenient if Governor O'Malley ever has another DUI. C'mon, you cannot make this shit up, except for maybe in a Tom Clancy novel. I don't think The Washington Post Ehrlich endorsement has turned them Repub/conservative at all, it just shows they've opened their eyes for once. CNN, are you listening? You got your "new Florida" here. HELLO! CNN??? (11/3/06) Bullmoose, check your FACTS? Soul Poppa did indeed work for WOL in 1975. I don't know where you got the "stuff" your smokin, or maybe it's the unGodly hours you seem to work. Check with Bobby Bennett, Pat Murphy or Davy Jones and I think you'll be gobbling chicken feed for a bit. Biondi opened no doors..he was probably the weakest link in rock radio when Rock was Rock. Light weight. ANG (11/3/06) Why doesn't Hearst Corp buy The SUN? They could rename and relaunch it as The NEW Baltimore NEWS AMERICAN! The newspaper/TV combo rule is probably going to be tossed soon. It'll have to be as more and more newspapers and newspaper companies become financially unstable all alone without other associated media properties to co-brand with. (11/3/06) OK, I'll admit, I have never listened to Peter Rosenberg's show, either on WJFK or on-line. But I never got the impression from the posts and news on DCRTV that he was a sports oriented show. So how is he in "Funniest Sports Celebrity"? All the others mentioned in the post, including the always hot Lindsay Czarniack, are sports journalists or commentators. Celebrities? Maybe not, but as Flounder from Elliot in the morning calls himself, they are "Regional Celebrities" and have the sports background. I'm not sure Rosenberg falls in either category. TL (11/3/06) To the person that tried to explain how jocks like Biondi keep coming back. Shitty answer...did you ever hear Biondi? One of the weakest voices and personalities to ever hit the airwaves. As I said, how do these guys keep on comin back?????? His career was NOT based on talent, it was family! ANG (11/3/06) Dave's response: If radio talent has a stunningly charismatic personality, he/she can overcome a weak voice. Look at Weasel and Diane Rehm..... Afternoon news anchor Julie Carrington on Martinsburg's TalkRadio WRNR AM 740 gave birth this morning (Friday) to a 7lb 11oz baby girl - Autumn Grace. This is the first child for Julie and her husband, Troy. Julie will be off the air during her six-week maternity leave. (11/3/06) To the best of my knowledge, WPIK's first studios were on the mezzanine level of the George Mason Hotel on Washington Street, Alexandria. (11/3/06) Don't be too shocked if the rumored cutbacks at Channel 4 aren't simply a management ploy to get George Michael to come back to earth and sign a new contract. Pretty routine stuff for big market TV management. (11/3/06) Speaking of WPIK, you can hear their sign-off, as well as other DC area station airchecks here: www.airchexx.com... And, here's a link for a Charm City aircheck, so the Balmer folks don't feel left out www.airchexx.com... The WPIK sign-off mentions a location on Pickett Street in Alexandria. I'm pretty sure that right after they left the Virginia Theater location mentioned earlier, they were on King Street, about two blocks east of Washington Street ('79/'80/'81 or so). They probably went to Pickett Street after that. In their very early days, WPIK began was in the George Mason Hotel, which was at the corner of Prince Street & South Washington Street. (11/3/06) Methinks the budget cuts are already underway at WRC TV 4. Check out the
new HDTV look of the George Michael Sports Machine... (11/3/06) If George goes, do the wife and kid go also? I'm excited about a whole, new, revamped sports broadcast on NBC4! In the meantime I'm looking for a tv that will automatically change the channel at 650 pm so I don't have to do it myself! Regards Biff (11/3/06) The item and link yesterday about the demise of movie palaces in the DC area made me think of the Virginia Theater in Alexandria. It's been gone for at least 15 or 20 years. Country station WPIK-AM 730 had their studios there (as did WXRA-FM 105.9 for a while), in a building adjacent to and upstairs from the theater. The Virginia Theater featured a magnificent pipe organ. Does anyone know where it ended up when the theater was demonlished? I remember that Tom Gauger and The Joy Boys did a stage show there in '71 or '72. Also, several blocks away from the Virginia Theater was the Alexandria Roller Rink. I think Jack Alix held some record hops or battles of the band there, during his days at WEAM and WPGC. There was a pipe organ there too, which provided music for the skaters. Any idea where it wound up? (11/3/06) Fascist talker WMAL is running a kooky ad where a couple of cue card-reading, kind of dimwit-sounding chicks argue for the "one man, one woman" thingo on the Virginia ballot next Tuesday. I'm fantasizing that these righty radio ad gals are really self-hating Lesbians, who are warmly welcomed in Old Virgin-y, I'm told. But you Anderson Cooper-types - stay well north of the Potomac. - Larry in Arlington (11/3/06) (Regarding the "Brazillion" joke:) Wow, that joke was SO FUNNY...two years ago! (11/3/06) RE: "l take "horse-faced" over "dumber than a box of rocks" any day!" JOKE ALERT! During the Iraq war briefing for the month of October, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs informed Bush that two Brazilian civilian contractors were killed in the line of duty during October. Bush replied, "That's devistatin'" and then turned to Rove and wispered, "Hey, Karl....how many thousand is there in a brazillion?" (11/3/06) Dave's response: Watch it. Gotta stay on-topic. Keep it on local media issues..... Jayne Miller "runs" WBAL's Investigative team, and she is without a doubt one of the finest reporters I have ever seen...and I work for a competitor. David Collins is also a fine reporter, they are fortunate to work at 'BAL where time and resources are committed to doing first class investigative journalism... (11/3/06) Dave's response: FYI - that previous message regarding David has been trashed. I agree, he's a top-notch TV journalist. And so's Jayne..... I remember a place where you could go and find out where the the great DJ have gone. Can you help. Mike (11/3/06) I ENJOYED THE RANDY/AMY DUO ON MSNBC AND THEN ALL AT ONCE SHE WAS ON PRENANCY LEAVE AND RANDY WAS DOING DUO'S WITH THE OTHER GAL ANCHORS. NEXT I KNEW, HE WAS NOT AROUND AND FOUND OUT THAT HIS CONTRACT WASN'T RENEWED. I REALLY THOUGHT HE WAS REFRESHING.....AND WONDER NOW WHERE HE ENDED UP. CAN YOU TELL ME. THANK YOU.... (11/3/06) Dave's response: There were rumblings that he'd interviewed with Fox 5 to do the morning gig, which eventually went to Fox's Bob Sellers. I think Randy went back to his native Minnesota. Don't know what he's doing..... Didn't the gentleman who owned the Biograph also own that theatre in Alexandria that ran adult films on 2-3 screens but would have an indie film shown on one( I saw "Crumb" there)? I believe that gentleman passed away in the summer of '05 and that theatre has closed as the shopping center went thru renovation.....and what was that small theatre just down the street from "Dancing Crab"(and i haven't heard a Dancing Crab commercial in year's)..wasn't much of a theatre, but they usually had choice films...ah and the old MacArthur....got ruined when converted to multi screen. .....and when the Pedas Bros. closed down the Circle they said they'd build a new theater, wha' happened? but I kid.. When is Marty Scorcese going to direct a Western? He's always expressed a big admiration for the films of John Ford. DeNiro in a Western, hey Bogie and Cagney made a Western.......boy I bet Dan Hellie is even more ticked off leaving his gig in Orlando with an ABC affiliated station only to land with an NBC owned station that's more than likely going to gut it's sport's department......Come on now Czarniak's voice is so nasal...okay maybe not Penny Marshall nasal but it's up there....and without Michael's scriptwriters preparing her sport's reports I suspect she might demonstrate a superficial knowledge of sport's....come on you totem poler's there's more pretty gals than one.......Who owns the Sport's Machine, Michael or NBC?......and no rumors about old timers like Jim Vance and Arch Campbell being given the gold watch or the cuckoo clock.....and no one hasn't mentioned the new Shaw Jewelers commercial, no more caterwauling songstress....albeit the new one is boring but not as annoying.....you know I'm having second thoughts about my Harry Morgan reference....OhI love to go swimming with bow legged women, Bill Smith from a box under the Whitehurst Freeway (11/3/06) Dave's response: I think Dan Hellie was brought on-board at Channel 4 to eventually be George Michael's replacement. And that may occur sooner rather than later. Heck, Hellie is "sitting pretty" even with the NBC cuts. It's called a long-term contract..... All in all, I enjoyed the Don-less show Thursday. Don's taken the show into a well-worn rut (plays the same sounders everyday at the same times), and Mike took it in a different - and refreshing - direction, with Robb's help, of course. Spread your wings, Mike. You're so much more than Don's "appendage." Get well soon, Don (cough cough). But another few days with Mike at the helm wouldn't hurt. I like it. I like him. - Mary Jim (11/3/06) /\ November 3 Messages /\ ![]() \/ November 2 Messages \/ Wow, a lot of things going on. The first thing is NBC might be cutting George Michael and Sonny Jurgensen. Ok, let me say this: I have been defending George Michael and continue to do so. Yes, I know he mumbles and stumbles, the big logo that covers the scoreboard, the phony sound effects and he’s lost his touch (for cynics, he never had touch HAHAHAHA). But, you can never doubt his sports segment was more entertaining than all the local sports broadcasts, including Comcast. Anyone can do a score and follow, but what George had that no one else has is that he had chemistry with someone he’s working with and it created a fun atmosphere. In-Depth stories are nice, pronouncing is alright, but you better relate to the audience, which George is the master of in this area. Now the interesting thing is if George is released, where will he go? That is where the fun begins. He can go to Triple X, 980, WTOP, WJFK, Comcast, or retire (which will get a huge response from this group). The most likely place is Triple X, but would George be supervised by all people… LARRY MICHAEL?! I doubt it. There’s going to be a sweepstakes to get George and/or Sonny, but it’s a crapshoot. About the Washington Post circulation, I totally agree with you Dave; the Washington Post has become more nationalized and is not focusing on local issues. My guess is the outside DC area sales were the same, but the local sales have slumped. The NY Post and the Daily News had higher circulation because the Yankees will always be NY’s story and continue to be. The Washington Post is trying to pull a fast one that WP Radio is local…PLEASE!!! I like the Washington Post and don’t mine working there, but they need to go back to basics. Tracy (11/2/06) So the Post does not give WTOP special "we are pals" treatment? Tony Williams not getting a table at a downtown restaurant is indeed gossip/news. The fact that Mark Plotkin (WTOP &WTWP) was there to see it is not....unless its a pretty cozy relationship. What crap! I am guessing if Jack Diamond happened to see it, the Post would not see fit to mention him. Lets face it, the Post and WTOP/WTWP are now all one big partnership. Expect very little coverage of any other radio. Its too bad their own interests come ahead of the readers. Still Disgusted! (11/2/06) RE: WGOP/WDMV 540/700 & [ " A decision will not be made until January on whether a Michigan-based broadcasting company can build four radio towers in Damascus. " ]........ One construction permit has already expired and the other (for AM 540) expires in just 24 days. Unfortunately, they don't have until January and so far they have not applied for an extension of either construction permit, so I would imagine the entire project is completely dead at this point unless somebody has some late-breaking news from the RED ZEBRA HQ. Birach doesn't have a chance in hell of getting this through. By the way, though, since when do "McMansions" have a constitutional right to a "rural vista"? And I love this line in the testimony from "Citizens for Responsible Tower Citing" (I cannot even believe there is such a NIMBY group!)..... "‘‘I would never, never in the Washington, D.C., area proposed anything with 400-foot towers — too controversial,” Burrow said." And these nutjobs are trying to make it sound like ground wires would pollute a stream! What's next, animal rights activists claiming the radio signals annoy their pets and affect their hearing? What the hell is this world coming to? (11/2/06) J.T. The Brick stated on his nationally syndicated show cleared on Sports Talk 980 stated on Wednesday night that "maybe Redskins owner Daniel Snyder should concentrate more on his professional football team instead of amusement parks and cutting down trees to increase the signals of his low energy radio stations". Would’ve love to seen the look on hyman’s face as he left the building and one of the smith brothers yelling out to him “AND THAT’S THE POINT… BITCH” damn that company sucks, biggest assholes in the business by far... (11/2/06) The below article regarding the WDMV move to Damascus appeared in the Rockville Gazette this week. HE left XM a few years back to return to FLA. (11/2/06) What happened to Nico Bella on Fox 5 "Sky Fox"? (11/2/06) I know you're all about local TV and radio, Dave, but with your occasional references to moviegoing, I'm sure you'll be interested in Marc Fisher's recent blog post about more D.C. movie theaters being shuttered: blog.washingtonpost.com/rawfisher... I live in Fairfax but still catch preview screenings downtown, often at the Wisconsin Ave. cinema. I'll miss it, but there are other venues that are better. Plus, each time D.C. shuts a theater, it increases the chances that the preview screenings might start heading out to Northern Virginia. As for the rumor about the closure of the Uptown, can you imagine the outcry? Light hits the edges of the Uptown screen whenever someone walks in from, or out to the lobby, but that's a small price to pay for seeing a movie on that massive screen. Christian (11/2/06) Dave's response: I still miss the Biograph (now a CVS) and the Key theaters in Georgetown..... "Also many more people listen to local Washington radio than read the Washington Post!. And their snub now takes on a "conflict of interest" since they are in bed with WTOP (which gets the occasional mention) and their OWN "radio station"." The Post does not have a relationship with WTOP which is why you do see rare mentions in news stories. The Post does have a relationship with WTWP (but they don't any any portion of it) and that may be why they go out of their way to never mention it in news stories. Anybody who thinks working with the Post will help get you news coverage is dead wrong. (11/2/06) (regarding a previous post) "that horse-faced idiot John Kerry trying to explain a botched 'dummies in Iraq' joke!". I'll take "horse-faced" over "dumber than a box of rocks" any day! Bush responded to Kerry's remark with THIS gem: "Words are important". Dubya is the LAST person in the known universe to be telling ANYONE: "Words are important"! Bush is barely able to string together a coherent English sentence! For five years has been warning Americans about various "nookular" threats facing us. This is the guy who has his every utterance scripted for him and yet still manages to screw up his lines with regularity of a fine Swiss watch. The man is beyond stupid! On his best day, he couldn't alphabetize a bag of M&Ms! He even jokes about how dumb he is: "To the C students I say, you, too, can be president of the United States." (George W. Bush, Yale 2001 commencement speech) Only a complete moron would say that Kerry was referring to the intelligence or education of the troops in Iraq. Bush didn't study hard at Yale and he didn't do his homework before invading Iraq. We're are stuck there and Bush is the reason why. Senator John Kerry is right: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.” (11/2/06) ("how do some of these folks keep on comin back is beyond me! ANG") Well ANG, it's simple. He's Dick Freakin' Biondi - that's how. (11/2/06) Perhaps my initial judgment was a bit harsh. Mike's O'meara's "tooth whitening" segment is riveting, simply riveting!! Somebody please call the Museum of Broadcasting and ask them to turn on their tape recorder lest yet another defining moment in the history of the Don and Mike show be lost to posterity. Brilliant radio, Mike, just brilliant!! Regards, A. Fan (11/2/06) Dave...I so agree with you on your rant about radio coverage in the Washington Post. Many more people listen to local Washington radio than watch local Washington t.v., and yet the Post does pages of t.v. coverage. Also many more people listen to local Washington radio than read the Washington Post!. And their snub now takes on a "conflict of interest" since they are in bed with WTOP (which gets the occasional mention) and their OWN "radio station". In any other business the Post would rail against this form of nepotism. Disgusted. (11/2/06) Harry Morgan isn't "that way", not that there's anything wrong with it. He did, however, beat his wife. It was in the news shortly after OJ was found innocent, mainly because Morgan and his wife were also from Brentwood. Or maybe he saw the whole OJ thing and wanted some of that publicity. (11/2/06) OH NO!! Don's home sick and Mike's soloing today (ugh!). Get ready for four hours of stumbling, bumbling, painful radio. So far Mike sounds about as relaxed and at ease as that horse-faced idiot John Kerry trying to explain a botched "dummies in Iraq" joke! I honestly thought they weren't going to subject us to anymore of that misery. Best, A. Fan (11/2/06) Dave's response: I listened to the first hour today and Mike was great. Just great..... to "Thinking about breaking into radio sales..." Go right ahead, radio sales managers are the nicest group of bosses you will ever find; so forgiving, so calm, so generous, so fair. Hell, you may be given the Shaws or Mervis account as soon as you walk in the door. Some radio station sales managers have been known to tell the new guy to go wine and dine Krystal Koons on the stations dime just to keep her happy-sometimes the sales managers even spring for tickets to a musical at the Kennedy Center after the meal! Just imagine, you, Krystal, evening wear, dinner, a show, and it would all be free! What are you waiting for? I can't say enough about the generosity of radio station sales managers; if a check is late, well, usually sales managers pay you the commission anyway and just blame the Post Office. Yep, some of the nicest bosses you will ever have. They understand the precious value of a 30 second spot eight minutes into an 11 minute break. They are so ethical. I can't say enough about radio sales managers. They are all looking for long term commitment in sales people, and they will pay out the nose and provide the best training possible to get it. And don't get me started on the great benefits and work hours those radio station sales managers give you. I can't say enough about radio station sales managers. I will tell you, when you go to a retail operation, all you have to do is show them your WJFK account executive business card, mention Opie & Anthony and Bill Oreilly, and doors automatically open up. You will be returning to the office every night with a pile of checks. It is just that easy of a sale. Did I mention the flexible hours? And the icing on the cake for getting into radio sales is Doni G mentors every new sales person on the "art of radio." It's true, and don't be surprised after working at WJFK for a few months if Doni himself invites you over for poker with the boys on a rainy night. Do you get my drift? (11/2/06) My guess is that Bob "Nighthawk" Terry "went out in a bad way", but my recollection is that his body was never found. (Shawn of DC). (11/2/06) To all in the land of idiots: First, Steve "Soul Poppa" Campbell never cracked a mic at WOL. He worked for WUST as PM drive, AM drive and PD. He was most likely the victim of a robbery since, as anyone who knew him would realize, he did NOT have a taste for the seamy side of life. Bob "Nighthawk" Terry left his concert at the Take-It- Easy Ranch in Southern Maryland with a L-A-R-G-E sum of cash and was never heard from again. His Oldsmobile Toronado was found, burned to a crisp, in a North Carolina swamp with a burned up man behind the wheel. That man had Bob's dentures in his mouth. If you knew Bob, you'd know that he was WAY too smart and slick to be the patsy in that scheme. Years later, a Washingtonian was vacationing in Holland when she recognized the manager of a leather goods store as Bob "Nighthawk" Terry. The Post dispatched a reporter and did a few articles on Bob and the speculation that he was alive and well in another country. There was never any conclusion. The HOT Morning Mess sucked. Good riddance, although I hate to see anyone lose a radio job in this climate. And, while her face resembled the grille on my first car, the girl did have a pretty cute butt that she flashed on the website. ANG, you don't know enough about this business to judge Dick Biondi. He was a pioneer for all of us deserves to be treated with respect. Shut up. Anyone who heard Rush talking about Katie Couric and surmised that to be "crying" is about seven IQ points dumber than the turd I flushed this morning. He was intrigued by the fact that she had humped his leg with e-mails, soliciting his opinion, then only used one small bit. Re: Republicans, gays and girlies. They are all mutually exclusive. For instance, you do not write with enough wit to be gay. But, you certainly sound "girlie." If you were a real man, you would be out making the most of our free enterprise system instead of writing whiny little missives because you are scared that your nanny-state will not be there to suckle you and that you might actually have to work for a living. And, before you open your stupid pie-hole about me, I've been up and working since 3AM and JUST stopped down for lunch and to verbally spank your lard ass at 3.33PM! Now, stop being a weenie, get back to work and at least pretend to contribute to society, you parasitic waste of carbon. Now, I'm feeling feisty. Would you like me to be your bodyguard, Dave? - General Bullmoose (11/2/06) The jock that was killed in Northern Virginia in the mid 70's was "Soul Poppa". He was found on a rural back road in 1975 or thereabouts. He was shot in the back of the head execution style, and naked when found. I was working at WMOD along with Pat Murphy, Jeff Leonard and Mike Fitzgerald. It really caused a lot of nerves to be on edge at the other end of the building. "Nighthawk", Bob Terry was another that went out in a bad way, but at a later date. PLB (11/2/06) Did you catch the news re: Dick Biondi the Chicago "Legend". He's landed a night gig in the city. He was bad on the air back then....how do some of these folks keep on comin back is beyond me! ANG (11/2/06) Re: Campbell Brown: She's on MSNBC right now (2:25pm) doing one of the segments on their day-long coverage of the 2006 elections. She was on Weekend Today both last Saturday and Sunday morning along with Lester Holt. I haven't noticed her absence, and I'm a loyal NBC watcher. I do think she's not on as often as she used to be, but maybe that's her choice...she used to be all over the place, all over the world. I agree with the assessment of Ann Curry's interview style (touchy-feely, knitted eyebrows, downturned mouth, soft voice conveying sorrow and concern during news reports). I was very glad she didn't get Katie Couric's job on the Today Show, but I'm not sure I agree she's worse than Barbara Harrison...that would really take a lot. -- Bobbie (11/2/06) WOL DJ died of foul play....That would be NIGHTHAWK BOB TERRY. (11/2/06) George "Mumbles" Michaels out at NBC4? Any move that means more Lindsay Czarniak is okay by me! And *please* someone bring back Michele Sigonia! (11/2/06) CORRECTION: my Halloween election prediction joke was indeed a prank, but one thing is true for sure....... Election board chief Linda H. Limone did actually say to a WBAL-TV reporter "What? Are you crazy?" when asked about paper ballots or paper backup of the DIEBOLD system. Amazing, but true. And still not investigated by any local media organization, unless you consider CNN's Washington bureau as local. And to respond to a previous post, yes, I've worked for the state of Maryland in Baltimore and yes 6 months should be enough time to fix things, even within government. I do not consider the "lazy-ass government worker excuse" as a valid one, even though I've witnessed it myself. I seem to remember a very successful "Do It Now!" politician who did a lot of great things for the state of Maryland by not accepting government inaction as par for the course. We need more of those types of people in government these days. Not status quo. (11/2/06) Rush was literally crying today that Katie Couric wasn't nice enough to him. Apparently, Katie didn't use all of the statement he sent her on the Michael J. Fox flap. Poor baby Rush. Wah wah wah. Oh yeah, the Democrats are all pro-terrorist and anti-God. And men in the Democratic party are "girlie," despite the fact that Mark Foley is a Republican. Get real, Rush. Go blow it out your Rush-hole. (11/2/06) The SUN's Mike Himowitz discusses the DIEBOLD electronic voting system and various conspiracy theories surrounding it today in The SUN....... www.baltimoresun.com... But, once again, The SUN fails to investigate Maryland election board chief Democrat Linda Limone, who has dangerously close ties to the DIEBOLD company, according to a CNN report. Strangely, no other local media outlet has chosen to investigate this story. And just when you think you've heard enough, there's more on DIEBOLD tonight on HBO's "Hacking Democracy" program, which includes a Johns Hopkins U. computer security expert who rats out the dangers of unverified electronic systems and how easily they can be hacked. If you don't have HBO, more is at www.hbo.com... Geez, what a day of bad news for Maryland democrats! But, don't worry, the DIEBOLD fix is still in. :-) (11/2/06) I heard that Shamrock & his Hollywood buddy Rawson Thurber, who directed "Dodgeball" are working together on a screenplay about the radio biz. Should be pretty scathing stuff since he had to put up with Diamond. Bob (11/2/06) So Mark Hyman's out at Sinclair, huh? Good freakin' riddance. I made the mistake of leaving our local Fox affiliate on after the news the other day and saw him foaming at the mouth about how the ACLU is a fully-owned subsidiary of NAMBLA or somesuch. Apparently it was part of a multi-part series Hyman's been doing on NAMBLA, which is obviously the most pressing issue facing America at this otherwise uneventful juncture in our history. Sinclair = Miserable Failure... (11/2/06) Dave: I know this is a site for local TV and radio comments, etc., but I thought you might have some insight having to do with NBC TV (national). I've noticed in recent months the absence of Campbell Brown from the "Today Show" and also as a reporter for the NBC Nightly News. What gives? A year or two ago she was all over the place. She seemed to be the heir apparent to Katie Couric and was even a weekend substitute on the Nightly News. Now, she's nowhere to be seen. It would appear that NBC gets hot someone and then abruptly drops them from everything. Natalie Morales seems to be the "go to" girl at the moment. And how does Anne Curry keep her job? She makes more news reading bloopers than Barbara Harrison and her phony and fake interviewing style is very annoying. Anyway, any thoughts? (11/2/06) Dave's response: Anybody want to chime in? You might want to take your query over to TVNewser, which focuses on the national TV news scene..... I just visited Mark Kaye's MySpace page and it began playing the "Lance Bass Is Gay" song. THIS is the talented lad I've been neglecting to listen to all this time? Jeez... even Adam Sandler realizes songs like that suck, which is why HE doesn't write them like that anymore. BTW, ukulele's not exactly what I'd call a hap'nin instrument right now. (11/2/06) Dave's response: I'm hearing that Clear Channel might try to get the WGAY calls returned to 99.5 considering, well, you know. Not that there's anything wrong with that..... Just wanted to email to see what you know about this Tommy Mcfly taking over as the Jack Diamond Morning Show Producer (or Intern??) at Mix 107.3. Still never really heard what happened to Shamrock. Also what is Bi-Lingual Allie's role going to be??? Thanks and hope to read about it online, Kevin (11/2/06) Dave's response: Anybody want to fill-in Kevin? RE: "Here's a thought...maybe the folks at the Post and WTWP need to get together in the same room and actually meet each other in order for this partnership to work. Does the Post even know it has a partner in radio? (11/2/06) Thinking of breaking into radio sales, do you know if stations, such as WJFK, have a salary plus commission or straight commission for their account executives. (11/2/06) To the WMAL poster: Fred, Andy and Bryan are on the air for 4 straight hours, out of which 80 full minutes are dedicated to news & views so they have a lot of commentary time to fill and it's actually refreshing to hear their personal take on issues. By the way, I was listening to that segment and they spent less than a minute talking about their wives' views, so what's the big deal?!? -Silvie in Waldorf- (11/2/06) On the show this morning, HOT 99.5 General Manager Jeff answered your questions about Mark & Kris and it's podcasted at www.hot995.com... (11/2/06) Dave, What happened to the morning show at WNST 1570 in Baltimore? Co-host Terry Ford and their producer weren't on the air this morning (Nov. 2nd). Everyone was being pretty tight-lipped about it. Were they fired? Did they suddenly quit? What happened?? (11/2/06) Dave's response: We're still trying to hunt for details about the massacre at NST..... Do you know the name of a black DJ who was found dead in Virginia in the late 1970s? I believe he is DJ for WOL Radio. Thank you. (11/2/06) Interesting article - Baltimore Sun... Audit faults cable TV fees verification... The Mayor's Office of Cable and Communications did not obtain the necessary financial records from Baltimore's cable companies to ensure that the city was receiving the money it was entitled to under its franchise agreements, according to a report by the city auditor issued yesterday. The report covered July 1, 2004, to June 30, 2005. During that time, the city got $4.5 million in franchise fees based on 5 percent of gross revenues, according to the audit. The fees came from Comcast of Baltimore City and from Flight Systems Inc., which provided cable service around the Inner Harbor from 1999 to March 2005, when it was bought by Comcast. City auditors said in the report that "the fees collected were neither verified nor reconciled to the franchisee's financial records to determine whether the city received the proper remittance." In a written response to the audit dated Oct. 30 and presented yesterday to the Board of Estimates, the cable office said that supporting documentation required under a new franchise agreement that went into effect in March 2005 "has not always been provided in a complete or timely manner by Comcast." The response noted "that there is no finding that indicates that the city has failed to receive all the franchise fees to which it is entitled." It added that it has scheduled a Nov. 15 meeting with Comcast officials to make sure it has all required documentation from the company since March 2005. (11/2/06) Dish Network has begun removing distant network channels from satellite. They were ordered by a Miami judge to remove the channels from everyone, even those who qualify under current laws. (11/2/06) Dave's response: Gee, you'll soon be stuck with Channel 7 and the occasional interruption of ABC fare with an old movie. Like the rest of us..... Dear Dave: Couldn't help but chime in on the discussion of the hiatus taken recently by Levan Reid given the perspective that I have growing up in my family. Reid has attained a certain level of celebrity that, when an extended absence occurs, will naturally prompt people to ask "What happened?" His absence is like a situation that all of us have seen one time or another at the office: somebody will arrange with management to take an extended leave for whatever reason, then return after that time passes. Whether or not we know about the reason(s) for that leave generally is left up to management and that person. The only difference here is that "the office" also includes the Channel 9 viewership (and the posters here at this site). Human nature being what it is, people are going to talk, speculate, and gossip. I'm sure we all have seen that at our jobs. But while there will be those who wonder what went on, there still is the fact that people like Reid, my Dad, Brian Williams, Katie Couric, Don Geronimo, etc., are all human beings with private lives, just like those who take extended leave at our jobs. I'm certain that Levan Reid appreciates the show of concern expressed by viewers about his well being. However, as somebody noted elsewhere, the Channel 9 website indicated that he has returned from a "brief hiatus." No doubt this note is what he and management agreed to say with respect to his leave and, if that's the case, so be it. Unless he wants to he is under no obligation to say more, not even to say he took leave for "family matters." You can bring up the argument that he and the station should take PR into consideration. But from my perspective of being in a broadcasting family for the 46 years I've been on this planet, some things trump PR. Again, I think there is no obligation to say more. Not a criticism, just an observation. Great site Dave! Sincerely, Joe Kasell (11/2/06) Dave's response: In case you didn't know, Joe is the son of the great Karl Kasell, the NPR newsman. And - what do you do about a media personality who makes frequent mention of his private life on his show? That, naturally, generates a lot of comment here in the Mailbag and in other internet venues. On one hand, you want to respect his private issues, but by airing his family matters, he essentially makes them "fair game" for public speculation - and, yes, the occasional "tasteless" comment..... This just moved at 8:57 a.m. Dunno if any properties in DCRTV's coverage area are involved. Stay tuned... BC-MEDIA-CBS-RADIO (URGENT)... CBS radio sales net $570 million... NEW YORK (Reuters) - Broadcaster CBS Corp. (CBSa.N) on Thursday said it has sold 29 radio stations for about $570 million as it seeks to restructure its radio division. On average the company sold the stations at a valuation of about 14 times operating income before depreciation and amortization. CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves also told analysts on a morning conference call he expected to sell more radio stations in two more markets. (11/2/06) Dave's response: Dan Snyder could pick up CBS's WJFK-FM and move the Redskins back to 106.7. Maybe he could also get the Junks in a package deal..... When two on-air columnists Roxanne Roberts and Amy Artgetsinger fail to mention WTWP in their printed column isn't it time that Bonneville cuts ties with the Post? Here's a thought...maybe the folks at the Post and WTWP need to get together in the same room and actually meet each other in order for this partnership to work. WTWP is obviously an afterthought for the Post. Best advice to Bonneville is to let the newspaper die on its own. Cut bait and throw your line back into the radio pond....there's bigger fish there than the crappy the Post has been supplying. (11/2/06) Re: "Was Harry Morgan in town last week?" Dave I believe this is a reference to Mike O'Meara's impression of Morgan. When he does Harry's voice the bit always has Harry making sexual "advances" towards Rob Spiwak. Hence the sore backside comment. (11/2/06) Dave's response: Oh, I get it - now..... Betcha the female traffic reporters in the Dallas / Fort Worth area can't help but grin at this: www.ilovebacon.com (11/2/06) We learn today that the wives of Grandy, Andy, and Nehman all don't like John Kerry's comments. Like, who gives a shit? By the way, after the election, can we get a real morning show on WMAL? I hear Mark and Kris are looking for work. (11/2/06) Hi Dave, I write the popular Washington gossip site known as Big Head Rob. Just wanted to be sure that it's on your radar, as we cover many Washington media issues, like the 99.5 controversy today: www.bigheadrob.com... Keep up the great work. All the best, Rob (11/2/06) Dave's response: Thanks Rob! Hey, the Post even had "room" today to run that "filler" listing of area radio stations. But nothing about the Hot 99.5 morning show. How out of touch, huh..... Re WNST: Looks like Casey Willett is now co-hosting the Morning Show with Drew Forrester. (11/2/06) When I was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla from 1988-1992, I did a lot of traveling around the Sunshine State as public affairs coordinator for Navy Recruiting. Virtually all the talk show stations throughout the state were very heavily programmed for local talk. Most ran Rush in the afternoon, but the morning and late afternoon "drive-time" slots were made up of "live and local talk" - schools, roads, taxes, elections, the local sports teams, plus the usual silly questions like "your favorite place to get a perm in Tampa." Now, fourteen years later, most talk stations are wall-to-wall syndicated talksmiesters who just want to bash Democrats and pump the Republican agenda. One rare exception is WSVA in Harrisonburg, Virginia, which has local talk shows (Candid Comment and Mike Shickman) at both ends of the day - and they are number one in their market. Al McGilvray (11/2/06) (Regarding Mark and Kris:) They were not winning by any means. They were being protected by previous management. Over the course their average was 6th maybe 5th 18-34. They never brought the station up, but rather kept it down. They were gettin outperformed by all the other dayparts: afternoons and evenings for the longest time. How long can you go before something happens. This change is a very smart programming move. No more hokie self absorbed radio. (11/2/06) I got this from Jeremy Conn via myspace regarding the WNST shake up… “No real good reason that i was let go today, or terry ford for that matter. We have been removed from the website. I put almost 6 years in, working for free for a year, working double shifts, filling in where ever it might be needed. I ruined a marriage with my job. But all that doesnt matter because the mighty nestor aparicio doesnt like myself or terry ford. No more saturday lowdown, no more jeremy conn show. Drew forrester will be retained for the morningshow. Thanks for everything.” (11/2/06) Ah, November and Standard Time are here, which means DXing season in the car going home. The more I listen to out of town stations like CKLW and WGN, the more I wonder why Washington talkers seem obsessed with politics and the Redskins. Give me a break, please. There are more things in the world than who will win the Senate seat in Virginia and who will start as quarterback for the non-entertaining Redskins. WTWP at least tries, but I'm tired of politics. Very tired of it. -- GAB in the Airless Cubicle (bouncing off the D-layer). (11/2/06) you cant honestly tell me you didnt get goosebumps listnening to doni g sing along with the bay city rollers today. great stuff! (11/2/06) Dave's response: Didn't hear Wednesday's show..... It's fun working at a place where you're not told when someone is let go, but have to read it in the trades. I enjoy walking down hallways with cameras trained on my every move like it's a prison. It's great to be looked at as a second class citizen by sales people when I go for coffee. Most people look forward to Christmas, but it's hard to get happy about anything that falls in the fourth fiscal quarter when budgets need to be cut and you may lose your job so that the cluster hits that budget. I'd like to say it's better somewhere else or in a different industry, but I'd be lying to myself. Microsoft, Clear Channel, CBS, General Motors, are all just different parts of the same machine. (11/2/06) Guys do not worry!!! Mark Kaye has been saying for about 3 months now, that if he gets fired, which is a distinct possibility, he will go work at Calusa...They make a lot of money and he saw their bonus checks...First of all, a lot of those rants have Cayman Islands sand all over them...That came out of "its his, its his" vagina probably...That is quite alright, good thing Infinity`s memory is short huh, otherwise you`d have to work with Mark at Calusa too...Who wants to do that? Mark Kaye sucks, he is fake, he is stuck up and no he is not funny. Kris was just there. You know kinda like a tampon needs a string. Well think of Mark as a tampon and Kris as a string. They were the best show for about 2 or so years, then it started going downhill as they were realizing they were good, becoming more and more stuck up. Soon enough you could hear it during the show.
