Can the return of Carlton Fredericks and Pegeen Fitzgerald be far behind (even if they're both dead....)" Carlton can stay dead as he and his now-deceased listeners weren't helped by his quack remedies. However, it would be nice to hear Ed and Pegeen again; broadcasting from his deathbed, Ed Fitzgerald was more coherent and livelier than certain pompous broadcasters today. (5/3/08) /\ May Messages /\ ![]() \/ April Messages \/ Good to see John Gambling back in the morning on WOR. For those of you who don't know, he's the third generation of that family to host the mornings there. It was absolutely disgraceful how they treated him when he was unceremoniously bounced from his long-time perch on that station, and his return just somehow feels right. While WOR skews to the right on the political and age spectrum (appealing mostly to dead or dying people in the car accident called God's other waiting room known as Central New Jersey), at least they've managed to keep local and live during the week and overnights (now if they could only do something about Sunday nights, yechhhh!) I know the weekday 9-4 programming is mostly cash cow city, but at least it means they can afford to put local drive time programming on at both ends. I drive-time DX WOR down here in rural Prince William all the time, and they still sound pretty good for what they aim to do; local opinion and news done with a view towards keeping viable in the New York 60 mile radius regional market. Now if they could only bring Joe Franklin back on the Sat-Sun overnight…..Genghis Cohen, still yearning for a decent bagel now that Giant has cut back operations…. (4/30/08) Congrats to O&A - Dead last in the latest NYC ratings. The virus is spreading boyyyyz (4/30/08) Long time wackpacker/actor/comic Kenneth Keith Kallenbach dead at 39 - www.philly.com... Philly Mike (4/24/08) Rock radio god, Norm Winer, CBS RADIO Vice President of Adult Rock Programming, was named the PD of wnew.com stream/ WWFS HD-2 which resurrects the defunct WNEW-FM as an archive of actual broadcasts, as well as current and classic rock, and currect and classic alternative rock. New York radio is coming alive! They are so lucky to have K-Rock come back, The recent sign on of WRXP 101.9, and now WNEW.com and HD especially with Norm Winer at the helm. Makes me proud of my first name Just one question, though is Norm Winer still overseeing WXRT, and WTGB The Globe? -Norm from Boston (4/17/08) Very sad. Will (Spens) was a news anchor for WNBC Radio and WNWS Radio (the FM station that carried NBC's all-news radio network 1975-1977) when I knew him. VERY sad...... (4/4/08) /\ April Messages /\ ![]() \/ March Messages \/ Damn... things are getting stupider w/the canning of Crys Quimby from WCBS! She and I have crossed paths many times over the years. She's also a CBS vet, having been at KNX for ages. Fuckin' shame. She's a pro at the all-news biz. Would love to see her land on Idaho Avenue (at DC's WTOP). I had to get that off my chest. She and (Chris) Core would make a killer news/talk combo. (3/19/08) Dave, much is said on this site about the degree to which radio stations are doing well. As a point of reference, I had a discussion this week with a gentleman from New York's WCBS Radio. This person indicated that things are getting so tight that 1) the top salesperson there is making about half of what he did two years ago and 2) news director Crys Quimby was recently - and reluctantly - let go, in a cost-cutting move. www.youtube.com (2/22/08)A troubled young man called into the Imus in the Morning program on Monday and uttered at least three explitives, two of which were clearly heard over-the-air on the I-man's flagship station, WABC. Show engineer Lou Rufino falsely told Imus that he had hit the dump button the first two times. The caller used the S-word at about 9:15 in the morning, after RFD-TV and many stations cut away from the show. Going into commercials, the WABC audio sounded distorted, an indication that the delay button had finally been utilized, perhaps too late to incur Mr. Imus an FCC fine for indecency. (2/11/08) CBS-FM's on-line stream has a commercial on it that invites former CD 101.9 listeners to tune into 947thewave.com for all their Jazz favorites from Anita Baker to Kenny G to George Benson. -Michael Popovec (2/8/08) You wonder if Smooth Jazz-CD 101.9 in NY flipping to a Rock format means that 92.3 K-Rock will definitely flip to Country. -Michael Popovec (2/5/08) With all forgiven, morning radio host Don Imus is on a roll, says the New York Times www.nytimes.com (2/3/08) /\ February Messages /\ ![]() \/ January Messages \/ Regis Philbin said several years ago that K-ROCK should become K_COUNTRY---perhaps CBS finally came to the conclusion that country is the way to go.FRESH, the new "cbs-fm" and a country 92.3 will keep 'ltw's ratings down!!!! The departure of Jim Ryan and his former djs has left lite open to any type of competition. JOE BENJAMIN (1/24/08) Hey Everyone... Someone got into my email and wrote a ridiculous email from my account and I just wanted to apologize to anyone who may have received it. I am figuring out what exactly happened and I will deal with it like George W. Bush would--swiftly and without any real thought. I hope all is well in your world and if you're someone I haven't spoken to in a long time--I'm in New York full time now (actually I'm moving to the West Side next week) so if you're in town--drop me a line. Take care... Howard was discussing on his show this AM that K ROCK may be switching format to country. If true, I'd say that's the death knell for your boys O&A. If you ever check www.marksfriggin.com he does a pretty exhaustive summary of the show if you want more details (it's usually posted by noon). (1/22/08) Hi Dave, I was not sure if I had sent you these shots. They were taken in 2006 when I spent a weekend with Hy Lit. Tom Conroy (1/21/08)
![]() Sad news about WLIR changing to an ESPN radio relay. From what I've read, WLIR was a kick-ass alternative rock station similar to an earlier era WHFS or even a current era WRNR. One interesting factoid: WHFS alum and current WRNR deejay Bob Waugh is an old school WLIR disc jockey. I'm sure he knows a few up there who have gotten the ax. KeninBrooklyn (1/16/08) whwh 1350 am is back as "ted radio" caught it on sunday morning in newtown, pa. with a good signal. Promoting to play anything they want, and some new type of clear am signal. (1/11/08) I'm scheduled to be part of a panel discussing the Alycia Lane story on "It's Your Call with Lynn Doyle" on CN8 tonight (Wednesday) at 9 p.m. There is also new stuff on www.lauranachman.net. (1/9/08) Philly.com is reporting that CBS officially fired Alycia Lane today. www.philly.com (1/7/08) The World Internet Radio Network would like to welcome The Matt and Huggy show to its digital airwaves. The Matt and Huggy show formerly on WYSP in Philadelphia have now braced the digital world and will now be doing there show live on The World Internet Radio Network. On September 13, when WYSP/Philadelphia dropped its Free FM Talk format in order to flip back to Active Rock, most of the air staff was let go, including 11-year WYSP veterans Matt & Huggy. The duo started out in 1996 doing weekends and over nights, then enjoyed a long run with the evening shift before they were given a 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. talk show to go along with WYSP's Free FM format. But after settling into their new time slot and getting adjusted to hosting a two-hour talk show with no music (which they did for over a year), Matt & Huggy became casualties of the format flip. However, rather than sitting around and getting stale while waiting for their next radio opportunity, Matt & Huggy decided to take advantage of technology such as podcasting and MySpace as a way to grow their fan base and keep their radio skills sharp. Plus, the outpouring of encouragement and disappointment they received from fans when the show was canceled made it an easy decision to keep the show alive in some form. You can now listen to the Matt and Huggy show on the World Internet Radio Network Monday-Friday from 9 -11pm eastern with the best of the Matt and Huggy show Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with live shows Tuesday and Thursday's To listen to the show go to www.wirnonline.com and click on listen now... Thanks, James Bryant, Program director, The world internet radio network, www.wirnonline.com (1/6/08) On Thursday WLIR 107.1 Hampton Bays, New York switched formats from Alternative to a simulcast of Dance Station Party 105.3. This is probably the end of an era in Long Island Radio as there are no FM stations that are playing Alternative or Classic Alternative in the Long Island-East Long Island area. There is a tribute site www.wlir.fm that has more information, but I have not heard any reason why this was done. (1/4/08) What's happened to the Wendy Williams show on Power 99fm WUSL in philadelphia, originally aired M-F2-6pm, since 1/2/2008 anew jock in the spot and no word of wendy.
